There isn't another active warship on the planet with a comparable legacy. The USS Enterprise first saw action during the Cuban Missile Crisis, tasked with stopping Soviet ships from reaching Fidel Castro's shores, and on November 4, returned to its Newport, Virginia home after supporting the Afghanistan war. In between, Enterprise participated in most of the major national-security events in its five decade history. Oh, and it made history as well: the Enterprise is the first ever nuclear aircraft carrier.
Hopefully, another warship will bear the name Enterprise. Sure beats all the latest ones.
UPDATE: Seems SECNAV has declared that CVN-80 will indeed be named USS Enterprise.

Don't do it. Seriously. I took the LSAT a few years ago, got accepted into several law schools but I had gone through with it, my outstanding debt would be $80,000 to $100,000 after graduation. Being the cold hearted fuckhole Republican I am, I wanted to be a lawyer so I could work for people who couldn't afford lawyers, but I can't do that when I have a mortgage sized loan to pay off. That's how the firms own you.
So I gave up on that. Fast forward to today, I'm debt free with enough disposable income to travel around the country at my whim, and ample time to pursue worthy endeavors and different career options without having to bankrupt myself.
I've resolved that I would never ever the fuck EVER go back to school and put myself in debt again unless I could pay my way. So many masters are as worthless as used toilet paper too.

That might have been funny actually. The cruise-in was great but I forgot my camera. 
The stores at the new place (we got turfed from our old place because we were "clogging up the parking lot" of the stores that WEREN'T EVEN OPEN YET!) have gotten into the swing of things, they are opening early on the days we are there and the grocery store has a booth out with coffee.

At the Battle of Midway, the USS Hornet's Torpedo Squadron 8 was comprised of hopelessly obsolete TBD Devastators. The night before the battle, Lt. John Waldon, the squadron commander, wrote his men a note:

Waldron and his men knew they were being sent on a suicide mission, but they went anyway. They never made it. The entire squadron of lumbering Devastators was shot down by Japanese Zeros and antiaircraft fire from the carriers. Only one member of the squadron--Ensign George H. Gay, Jr.--survived by ditching his riddled bomber, which had been attacked by five fighters. The Japanese pilots saw Gay escape and repeatedly strafed the water, trying to kill him. He hid under a floating seat cushion and watched Waldon's Devastator go in. Waldron stood up in the cockpit and tried to bail out, but the aircraft hit the water and exploded.
Gay witnessed the entire battle from the water. He got to see three of the four Japanese carriers sunk by the SBD Dauntless dive bombers from the Yorktown and Enterprise.
After 30 hours in the ocean, Gay was rescued by a PBY Catalina. He made it through the war and lived until 1994.

At Midway. Because VT-8 never linked up with VF-8, they were at different altitudes plus clouds and radio silence. So VT-8 went in solo. Except VF-6 accidentally linked up with VT-8. Since Waldron did not know it and VF-6 never heard the code phrase. VT-8 got shot to bits. VF-8 stuck with VB-8/VS-8 so flew to Midway. VT-6 went in with no fighter cover. VT-5 launched almost an hour after VT-8 and VT-6 with correct position. But Yorktown's fighters were just as useless since they tried to protect Leslie's TBDs and the higher flying SBDs,
The Midway planes were doomed when Red Parks decided to hurl his F2A Buffaloes and F4F-3 Wildcats at First Air Fleet's first wave. He was supposed to escort the SB2Us, SBDs, and TBFs in their attack. Parks and his men made a futile sacrifice and doomed the Midway attack planes.

Honestly? Depending on where you live it's probably legal to give alcohol to your children in your own home. Start letting him have beer or wine with dinner and make it clear that you expect him to be a responsible adult about it. That should cut down on the heavy drinking at strange parties.
The fact that he didn't drive is a good thing and should be weighed in his favor. He's trying to learn how to be an adult. Encourage it.

Which is an inexcusable design error. Lithium batteries will dump their entire charge quickly if given the opportunity to do so. Not isolating them in the event of drowning or flooding makes them death-traps.

The coolest thing I ever heard was about the Thatch Weave, invented by John S. Thatch, who was desperate to work out how his much less maneuverable F4F Wildcats could overcome the dancing Japanese Zeros.
Using matchsticks on a table, Thatch developed what he called the "Beam Defense Position," soon known as the "Thach Weave." It was executed by either two Wildcats flying side-by-side or two pairs of Wildcats flying together. One aircraft or pair of aircraft would serve as bait for a Zero.
When the Zero attacked the bait plane(s), the Americans would turn in toward each other, crossing paths. Once they were far enough apart, they turned in toward each other again, which would bring the Zero right in front of the wing man or wing men, who would open fire.
When the Zero took the bait, the Thatch Weave worked 100 percent of the time.
And that's how an American figured out how to use a stubby, slower, less maneuverable aircraft to shoot down his faster, more nimble opponent.
Oh, and the Wildcats had armored cockpits and self-sealing fuel tanks. That helped. The Zeros burst into flames after only one burst. That's the great failing of the Japanese: They can't change course once they've settled on it. Some giant Japanese brainster said, "No armor and no self-sealing fuel tanks!" so that's what they did, forever and amen.
We, on the other hand, adapt and change. Grover Norquist is predicting a second Tea Party wave that'll dwarf the first one. I agree with him. Ted Cruz is just the beginning.
We're going to use the Thatch Weave on the Democrats, and we'll eventually win.

Especially from a legal standpoint. If it were my kid I'd tell him that if he had come to me asking about drinking, I would've had treated him as an adult and let him experience it in a controlled environment. But his behavior ruined it for now.

H2 is stupidly bulky. You can get the bulk down via the Sabatier process, and convert it into CH4, but that is just Natural Gas.
So why not just burn Natural Gas, instead of using nuke plants to crack H2 and then store?
It was all a bad idea ... the only good that came out of it was encouraging CH4 vehicle conversions.

My first ship was Forrestal. Lucky you, you got to deal with the Carter years. I got to handle the Clinton years when we were stripping aircraft for parts and sending the squadrons on basket leave for 2-3 monthscoming off of cruise and it seemed like the only thing we had a lot of was commitments, but it wasn't as bad as what I have heard about the "hollow force".

I think the LiFe tech is less prone to torching up when physically abused than Li-Ion is which should make it a better choice for ordinary consumer applications.
The LiPo's are real efficient, but get kinda splody when abused and have a tendency to brick when discharged much below about 4%.

I read the article about cooking and culture. Some lefty popped up in the comments section to blame capitalism for the increasing tendency to feed the family at McDonald's or KFC rather than cooking a family meal at home. ('Cause God knows leftists are never to blame for anything pertaining to the breakdown of the family.) The lefty said the poor American worker is so oppressed and overworked he or she has no option but to eat fast food.
What a load. Even though grocery prices have gone up, it's still a hell of a lot cheaper to feed your family at home than it is to eat fast food all the time. Make big pots of soup and freeze portions. Bags of frozen veggies are healthy and nutrious. Roast a chicken with veggies and potatoes. Bags of potatoes and rice and beans are cheap. 1. He needs to start learning adult things -- since he's clearly set to start blundering into them ignorantly otherwise.
2. Sixteen isn't too bad physically -- won't stunt his growth too much, etc. But he should maybe produce a research paper on what alcohol consumption will do to him physically while he's still developing.
3. Providing alcohol to minors is a criminal offense -- and he shouldn't be hanging out with criminals. You need their names.
4. He should be liberally praised for having the judgment to avoid driving....with, perhaps, the caveat that you're going easy on him this time because of that. You can come up with a list of "30 days in solitary then shipped off to a reform school north of the Arctic Circle" items that would have kicked in if he were DUI underage....which might help mellow you out for what you actually do to him.
5. If it were a kid o' mine, I'd be more pissed that he was experimenting with comparative strangers in uncontrolled circumstances than that he was experimenting. If, after he serves his time for this offense, he can't come back to you and experiment in a comfortable, controlled setting, then he'll actually be in more danger. Some of the experiments he should be guided into are: "How much can I drink with someone I don't trust very much and still keep my wits?" "How much do beers/wine/spirits effect me, and what if I mix them?" "If I don't see a pour, how can I tell if I've been given something with a radically different alcohol profile than I was expecting?" -- these all have practical applications and it's best that he have tested skills by the time he actually attains legal drinking age. But, at his age, these should be experiments and not lifestyle choices -- they should take place at an appropriate time, have adequate recovery periods, have an agreed protocol, and teach important truths.

Yea, it will brick if overdischarged. All of them will.
Dewalt's 36v A123 based cells had bad BMS boards, and caused reliability problems, but a properly designed BMS will just cut off power when it gets near the discharge limit ... or if the battery gets submerged.

Everyone who drinks eventually has their asshole moment. My misfortune was to be in a situation where I trusted the wrong people and let my guard down, something that I've never had a problem with in the past 14 years.
As for being 21, he'll be 18 sooner than that and I guarantee you that the minute he moves out, whether to college or to find work, he'll find some 21 year old friends with their own place and plenty of booze. They'll be the ones that shape his drinking habits.
And what lesson do you expect him to learn? That he needs to lie better, or that you and your wife are hypocrites?

On Thurs, went whale watching off Newport Beach CA. Did we see grays? Nope. Saw a humpback. A friggin' humpback - rare for these parts, they should be on their way to Hawaii now. Anyway, this guy took a detour to the California Rivera and we got quite the show. Tagged alongside him for an hour and he breached 7 or 8 times. Full body breaches, launched out of the water, flip turn and SPLASH! Incredible. Awesome. Spectatular. I feel blessed to have been able to see that.

yeah, I know. the Huskers this year have been a surprisingly mediocre team. some of the games they've won, I don't know how they did it. they would be a 7-5 team in the SEC or even in the Pac 12 this year, I think. I was surprised that they were so heavily favored to win today's game.

The reason why Saratoga missed Midway was because she had taken a torpedo and needed repairs. While they were repairing that hole, they removed Saratoga's 8in guns. That took time so Saratoga arrived at Pearl IIRC a day late for the Battle of Midway.

But with war looming and Japan had already abandoned the treaties, the US Navy needed another carrier to bridge the gap before the first Essex was due in the fleet in late 1942. So they broke the treaty limits. Hence USS Hornet CV-8 was built as an almost twin of Yorktown and Enterprise.

You do know that Virginia did away with the car tax about 15 years ago? Yep. Jim Gilmore was elected as Governor on that pledge. They started removing it by about 20% a year, with the state reimbursing the locality for the money they no longer receive from it. When the recession hit in 2001, Mark Warner suspended the tax rebate to the locality because of the "fiscal emergency" and the state could not balance the budget unless it was suspended at about 80%. Even after the state ran surplus for years after that, Warner and Kaine decided they needed the surplus to spend on free shit. So we are stuck paying that shit with no end in sight.
If you want some 100% pure gasoline for your baby, next time you are in Roanoke, go to the Pure station on Franklin Road. It is ethanol free and will make your car purr.

Shit, I meant in my post E15, but the E10 is also crappy. Back in September when MrsCaniac and I went to the OBX for a week, I filled up my car with E0 gas and we drove the whole way down, and drove around for the week on that fillup. In November we went back down, and I filled up with E10. We made it down there on that tank, but had to fill up when we got there. I am convinced that it is cheaper for me to use the more expensive E0 than the E10 because my gas mileage means I use a hell of a lot less gas.

Yep, its hard to contain hydrogen. On a mass produced product like a car with commodity seals and lame UAW assembly, it will constantly be leaking out.
It also likes to make steel and some other metals brittle and prone to cracking.

Anna, currently the cheapest way to make hydrogen is to crack it out of natural gas. Beats electrolysis, because the hydrogen in methane is already reduced. Using electric current to break down water burns more energy than can be had by running the hydrogen through a fuel cell TANSTAAFL, and all that. One real big problem with hydrogen is that you cannot blend odorants into it, like you can with natural gas and LP gas. And hydrogen is on its own, is completely odorless. So your nose cannot warn you of a leak. Bad juju.

The grandfather for whom I am named (who said he didn't want his kids to grow up to be Sailors or mechanics, so I'm sure I was a great disappointment to him) was a SEABEE in WW2. He didn't talk much about it either, but when my uncle brought a Japanese car home from college he took a gas can and a lighter and set it on fire in the driveway. It sat there until he and my grandmother had both died and they had it towed off for scrap.

Italian front is incredibly fascinating and rather overlooked in a lot of ways. It's the one area of WW2 I never get tired of. There were some extremely bloody battles going on there in 44 to 45 that just don't get much coverage, for some reason. It was pretty much a shit fight to the end.

Yep. The counties and cities were supposed to stop taxing us, and in exchange, the counties/cities would get that money from the state. Now, we still pay that f'ing thing. It's why I don't believe anything out of any politicians' pieholes.
My hope is that when/if the economy rebounds, the tax is done away with finally.

Small quibble. Thatch stayed with Yorktown's TBDs all the way, so Massey had air cover. Unfortunately, there were only 6 Wildcats total and they were overwhelmed by Zeros. They did perform the valuable service of keeping the Zeeks on the deck, however, allowing Leslie and McClusky to launch unhindered attacks on Kaga and Akagi + Soryu respectfully (Betcha thought it was the Big E that got Kaga, dincha? That's how it's usually reported, but it's wrong. Bedraggled, bruised, forgotten Old Yorky landed the first US blow at Midway, in an attack led by a dive bomber without a bomb. Yorktown was always kind of a crazy ship.)

I have read the alleged USS Yorktown CV-5 published ship history - 'Rendezvous at Midway:USS Yorktown versus the Japanese Fleet.' Considering it was published at almost the same time as Stafford's The Big E, it is a ship history more fitting to have been written during wartime like Hornet's 'A Ship to Remember: Saga of the USS Hornet' or Johnson's book on USS Lexington 'Queen of the Flattops.' The Yorktown book suffers many gross inaccuracies and portrays the battle as if Enterprise and Hornet were not even there.

That's insane. "Let it burn" now means walk away from the negotiation and let sequestration hit and all the rates expire. Make everyone share in the pain. Which is still short of what needs to be done to balance the federal budget (not that there is even a budget anymore), which is the primary problem we need to deal with. Frankly we should refuse to raise the debt limit at all and force the dems to balance the budget and break all the promises of goodies that they depend on as well.
There's no valiant effort to be made here. We do nothing and get the less bad outcome. Which will still be bad, and not nearly as draconian as the situation requires. We aren't going to talk them into reduced spending.

My mom was working towards a PhD in the History of Mathematics at a UC campus, and someone got TO'd enough at her faculty adviser to shred one of his textbooks (it was a tome-and-a-half, I had it some years later when I was an undergrad), stuff it under his office door, and set it alight. Considering the usual clutter in faculty offices (and his was certainly no exception), it's a wonder it didn't result in a 4-alarm fire.

I wish I had answers for you. I don't. If I were the type to take my own life it would certainly have been easiest to do it around Christmas 2010. It was her favorite holiday, and the first one without her. Each of us has our own pain, and our own limits. I'm too stubborn to die, plus I have people that depend on me. There's no guarantee of good governance being the outcome. The guarantee is that the current economy and promises of government goodies are unsustainable lies. They cannot continue, so they won't. The longer we wait to end the lies, the farther the gulf between the lies and reality grows, so the inevitable reckoning becomes worse and worse. If the lies continue long enough, we may pass the point where the required corrections are nationally survivable. We may already be past that point. That is unknowable until it happens.

I've managed people for many years, and there's a talk that always comes up about priorities. I tell my guys, "I don't want any of you to talk about this job as your number one priority. Your number one priority needs to be your health, so you can be there for all the people who are counting on you. Your next has to be your loved ones. Outside of that, there is extended family, friends, co-workers, your neighborhood, your nation. At five or six, there has to be your your honor, your integrity, a career path toward success. If you tell me that this job is your number one priority, it won't make me think you're a corporate guy, it'll convince me that you are one sick puppy......but it'd be nice if it were in your top ten."
You have experienced a great shock. Your co-worker is beyond help or hindrance now, it's time to get YOUR priorities in order. Are you ok? If you need help, seek it -- whether clergy, shrinks, counselors, friends -- you've got to get yourself on the level immediately, so you can do what needs to be done. Looking to the next priority, how are your loved ones? Has your spouse/have your kids been eased through the situation? Can you lend them strength to help them through?
How are your coworkers? Can you help them deal with this horrible situation? Can you help your management maintain a cohesive, functional group?
It's not failing others to look to yourself first, it's preparing yourself to be there for them -- and you must proceed THROUGH your own state of mind to get there....you can't stop and smell the flowers.

"Let them own it" is a political issue and is not the same as "let it burn," which is a security issue. I am a family man, and oath sworn to protect and defend my country. I will not let my community burn and I will shoot the assholes lighting the fires.
If criminals come pouring into your community to openly loot and burn, do what you gotta do. That may be a consequence of "let it burn" if the recipients of free shit choose to make it so, but there's no guarantee of that, either. As close as I am to Chicago, I pretty much expect things to go badly for me if it comes to that. But that is not itself the "let it burn" being discussed. Again if that's the only possibility today for ending the lies, it will never improve anyway.
There's ALWAYS a valiant efort to be made. If you're a valiant type of person.

Yea we do. There's too much debt and obligations with the USA brand on it to ever satisfy without something akin to hyperinflation (which is a defacto burn it down anyway). A lot of that shit is going to have to be repudiated and defaulted on and a new currency established.
In theory we could balance the budget including reducing the debt (not the deficit) by some fixed amount until such time (which would be a long time considering debt exceeds GDP and GDP will shrink at least 10% when the federal budget is balanced) as the debt is zero. That choice won't be made politically, so it doesn't really require much discussion.
Mass debt repudiation, including the national government's debt, would lead to pretty significant deflation, which unless I miss something means the currency gets stronger, so we'd still be using it. Or preferably dollars printed by the treasury department after the federal reserve is shut down. Obviously it would be all but impossible for a generation for the government to borrow again, but then that has been the problem in the first place.
But the dems' preferred path is print the shit out of everything (I don't think they care at all about paying anything off so long as they can 'pay' the interest with worthless paper), which does mean we lose the currency. Which almost certainly means devolving into Mad Max territory.

I'm not going anywhere because I don't have the resources, doubt I have the heart to abandon my parents or the folks I see at the soup kitchen I volunteer at, and because I don't believe there is any safe haven unless you can surround yourself with people who intend to make it safe.
That being said, I'm not advocating stealing a couple hundred nukes and annihilating the cities. I'm advocating shutting down the government's ability to borrow and cover up the depression because I hope if people are forced to endure the painful truth of the government at its current size they will stop supporting it. Or it will shrink through starvation, which is just as well. If we are today past the point of no return-that is to say to do so means it all comes undone-then there is nothing to be gained by delay as the problems can only ever get worse until they are dealt with.

Now you're going to pay down the debt. At what rate? 1% of GDP? Then you're claiming to be committed for 110 years, roughly. I'm not buying that. At 5% you can do it in a generation (22 years) assuming the dems never win a mandate to stop the pain. But note that you've now committed 25% of the federal budget to debt paydown, which means taking it from whatever other programs you chose to preserve.
You'll get growth eventually. Probably. But for the first few years, this is what you have to convince people to do. I don't see the political will to do that.

I used to own shares in a REIT that specialized in Office-R/D properties -- of which there are many in Silicon Valley. So when I'd visit one, I'd jokingly point to a random paver and say "see that one -- that's MY brick".
All the US currency in circulation -- whether in dollar coins, paper money, or electronic journal entries -- was created through buying Federal obligations. So every greenback in existence can point to a Treasury bond or note and say, "that's my note." [Oh, BTW, the exception is when the dollars were used to buy underwater mortgages -- don't think you benefit by poking holes.]
So if you can pull a sawbuck out of your wallet, you can then point to an E-series bond and say, "that's my bond." But what if it defaults? What if all $16T of Federal debt defaults? When all the money in your pocket is only a wad of defaulted bonds and underwater mortgages? Where's your brick when it's busted-up Solyndra silicon?

I picked up an '89 model year Jupiter SAS 767 student model for $200.
The first thing to do is to play a few notes to see how it sounds. The second thing to do is completely disassemble it.
This particular horn has a condition where corrosion is occurring under the lacquer. I would bet the air dryers on the compressed air system were off the day they coated this unit.

Obama thought he would set up this really cool Asian group of countries on Pacific rim, with him in charge and China left out. China instead sets up the same type of group, leaving US out.
This means that allies like South Korea and Japan agreed to throw their lot in with china rather than the US. No doubt a lot of this was due to the proximity of powerful China coupled with the realization that Obama wouldn't do a damn thing to help them if there were problems with china.
