Heh. New Orleans Mardi Gras float mocks Obamacare disaster.

For those of you attending Mardi Gras, beware those dirty beads.

Beads and throws may start off in pristine condition, but by the time they are sorted, prepped, thrown, caught and many times thrown again, those beads may be carrying more than the Mardi Gras spirit.

"Germs, virus, flu virus, bacteria contamination, soil, mud, dirt, just all the usual stuff that you have worry about that comes with its own germs," listed Our Lady of the Lake Children's Hospital pediatrician Dr. Chris Funes.

Remember, what does not kill you, just makes you stronger. Breast-Feeding

Breast-feeding benefits overstated? You don't say. I hated how others would treat you like a heathen if you bottle fed your baby. Much like the AGW crowd. You either tow the line, or face ridicule, scorn and being called a Nazi or something.

I wonder if moms will be required to put food labels on their breasts in order to comply with the new $2 billion dollar Obama/FDA labeling program.

Pomplamoose

Impressive music video mixing Pharrell and Daft Punk that was completed in one take.

College Pron Star

This won't help her generate sympathy. Duke student who does pron to pay for college turned down full scholarship to Vandy.

Mount Everest

Summit season is approaching (May timeframe) and we find that Joby Ogwyn plans to summit Everest then change into his wingsuit and jump off, gliding his way back down to base camp.

Hopefully this guy does not get added to the list of over 200 bodies on Mount Everest.

Godzilla

Oh man, put me down in the ima gonna go see it in the theater column.

Related: Godzilla vs Heisenberg.

Here's a short little video that wasn't too shabby. Batman vs Terminator.

Weather Forecast Using Your Cat

I don't know, I think my replaced acl in my knee is pretty accurate. Your cat can predict the weather.

When cats sneeze it is a sign of rain.
The cardinal point to which a cat turns and washes her face after rain shows the directing from which the wind will blow.
When cats are snoring foul weather follows.
It is a sign of rain if the cat washes her head behind her ear.
When cats lie on their head with mouth turned up [on their back] expect a storm.
When a cat washes her face with her back to the fire expect a thaw in winter.

Sharp Elbows

Well isn't this special. High school senior scores a date to the prom with a Houston Texan cheerleader.

14 Never been a mother but it seems to me breast-feeding would be the way to go if you can do it. But then the baby milk people probably figured out how to make their product almost identical to breastmilk. I am completely ignorant about this issue, but if I had a baby I would definitely want to breast-feed him or her. But I wouldn't make a religion out of it since bottle-fed babies seem to turn out okay. (My mom weaned each of us at 6 months.)

29 Breast-feeding, like every other damned aspect of raising children, is one of these topics where every twenty or thirty years the "experts" decide everyone is doing it wrong. I remember my mother telling about one of her friends, back in the early Fifties, who was told by the doc that the first milk (the colostrum) was harmful to the infant, and so her friend had to bottle-feed for 24 hours before trying the kid on the breast. My mother very sensibly asked how the species managed to survive until that discovery. Then in the 1970s the pendulum swung the other way, and the breast-milk Nazis took over. You MUST breast-feed. If you don't, you're a BAD MOTHER. Oh, and EVIL NESTLE will try to FORCE you to bottle-feed, but don't do it because only BAD MOTHERS do that. I don't know which is worse: child-rearing "experts" who have kids, and so assume that whatever they did was the One True Right Way, or "experts" without kids, who assume that whatever is in the professional journals this month is the One True Right Way.

54 Gingy's watching that movie about the guy who caused WWII-Raiders of the Lost Ark. I was thinking about this after that ep of BBT where Amy points out that Indy has no effect on the plot, the movie would have gone the same without Indy in it. She's wrong though, without Indy, Beloq loads the Ark onto the flying wing and flies it to Berlin where he opens it in a big ceremony before Hitler and the NAZI brass. Presumably the Ark would have melted all of their faces off, thereby preventing WWII and the Holocaust. Because of Indy, all this happens to a small group of flunkies on an island in the Mediterranean, sparing Hitler. Indiana Jones is the greatest mass murderer in history.

Here's where I find Amy's argument to be wrong: without Indy, the Nazis would still have died.  However, if Indy wasn't there then eventually the Nazis would have investigated what happened to their team, found the Ark and the film of the destruction, and continued their experiments and perhaps figured out a way to use the Ark to their advantage.

Because of Indy, all this happens to a small group of flunkies on an island in the Mediterranean, sparing Hitler. Indiana Jones is the greatest mass murderer in history. Posted by: Weirddave at March 01, 2014 11:12 PM (N/cFh) Didn't the NAZI's follow Indy to Marion and thus the amulet? Also, remember when Marion said she was "just a child" but Indy said that she knew what she was doing in regards to a previous relationship? Turns out that Spielberg and Lucas intended her age at the time of the affair to beÂ… ELEVEN. http://tinyurl.com/lgped7s That's right, Indy was a Pedo!

111 There are movies like "Birth of a Nation" and "Blazing Saddles" that could not be made today.

I found another one.  "Night of the Demons (198 ," directed by Kevin Tenney.  It's a stupid teens-get-killed movie from the late 80's, and I don't really recommend it past the really cool opening credits.  But there's no way that movie could be made in this century.  Surprised it was made in the last one.

I was 2 months premature, was 2 pounds 8 oz when I was born and spent most of my first year in the hospital so I was not breastfed. I am 5'8" and 148 lbs. (and I have weighed considerably more than that and will again if I don't watch it). It's true I was extremely skinny until I was 12 and then puberty and genes caught up with me.

Your genes have more to do with your adult height and weight than breast-feeding or your childhood diet, although I imagine actually being malnourished during your childhood could stunt growth.

Most of the baby boomers were bottle-fed. I've never noticed that they're a stunted bunch (not physically anyway - mentally, that's a different matter :-)

Well, actually, I remember the U.S. media describing Reagan during the early Yuri Andropov years as bullying the Soviet leadership -- by not holding any summit meetings with them, in which his military buildup could be discussed and negotiated.

Not yet having realized what incredible bullshit artists and fellow travellers the American media are, I bought into this at the time.

It was years later that I realized I had been had, reading the memoirs of key Reagan administration participants, who indicated that they had been making regular overtures to Moscow at that time, trying to arrange a summit, all of which had been contemptuously and silently ignored.

It was only after Reagan declared his intent to pursue the Strategic Defense Initiative that suddenly the Kremlin become _very_ interested in talking to him. Funny, that.

No. Bush invaded and conquered Afganistan and Iraq. Who, since Alexander the Great, was able to conquer Afganistan? But then, Russia got away with invading Georgia in 2008. Admittedly, Bush was neutered by that point, but if Russia could get away with invading another country and setting up a puppet government (or two) under Bush, just think how much more they will be willing to push under that SCoaMF Obama!

281 Well, actually, I remember the U.S. media describing Reagan during the early Yuri Andropov years as bullying the Soviet leadership -- by not holding any summit meetings with them, in which his military buildup could be discussed and negotiated. Posted by: torquewrench at March 02, 2014 12:20 AM (gqT4g Well, to be fair to Reagan, the leaders of the Soviet Union were dropping like flies during his first term, so the White House had no idea who was in charge for a lot of the time. IIRC, several of those guys were dead for a while before there was an announcement.

Tammy al-Thor: The difference is that you can leave those churches without fear of being hunted down and killed as a heretic. Female Orthodox Jewish women wear wigs (they cut their hair after marriage) and Orthodox men don't shave, have to wear black and can't drive or write on the Sabbath. They are not the same as Muslims.

I wouldn't belong to one of those churches myself, but they have a perfect right to set their own rules - just as long as those rules do not involve breaking the law (multiple wives, honor killings, etc) or trying to force their faith on others. I don't think it's a terrible thing that very strict churches or communities like the Amish exist.

I can understand why someone might look at the dreck that is "culture" circa 2014 and decide they're better off steering clear of it. I can also understand why someone would want to leave that culture and enter the larger world.

291 Just jumping in with my $0.02 on the breast feeding issue.

I don't care if a mom breastfeeds or formula feeds.. as long as she feeds her kids it's all good, in my book.  My first baby was born 10 weeks early due to severe preeclampsia.  She was in the NICU 7 weeks, during which I tried everything I could to pump enough breastmilk for her.  I won't bore you with the details, but I tried everything the lactation nurses, the NICU nurses, and everybody else told me to do.  I never produced more than 10ml at a time.  I gave up trying shortly after she came home because it was simply adding more stress to an already stressful situation.  With my second baby, who was born without any significant medical problems during the pregnancy, I was determined to breast feed and once again did everything I was told to do.  Once again, it simply didn't work and I ended up throwing in the towel after four stressful weeks (and one sobbing phone call to my sister-in-law for advice on what to do, made from my bedroom closet so that my well-meaning-but-judgemental-pro-breastfeeding-mother-in-law wouldn't hear).

I know, breast is best (and cheaper.. formula is damn expensive) but sometimes it doesn't fucking work and mothers shouldn't be shamed for choosing to feed their children real food instead of hope.  I can't tell you how much of a relief it was to simply let go of the guilt over not achieving the "ideal" of motherhood and accept the truth: that formula was the right choice for me and my kids, no matter what the "experts" and other busybodies might think.

So yeah, fuck the breastapo.

330 "They're so invested in the idea that JEF is some sort of super-genius, they can't bear to admit Putin is walking all over him."

Worse yet!

Admitting any of the failures of The Won *also* implies admitting that certain prominent prior critics of the man had been correct. For instance:

-- Someone claimed that Obamacare was going to turn out to be a disaster

sarahpalin

-- Someone predicted that Obamanomics and the "stimulus" package would turn out to be the biggest waste of borrowed money in the entire history of the nation

sarahpalin

-- Someone quite specifically predicted that Obama's spineless foreign policy stance and intent to sharply draw down the U.S. military would lead to Russia invading Ukrainian territory

sarahpalin

Over and over again with laser accuracy.

But for a liberal ever to admit that Sarah Palin had been right about ANYTHING, even once, much less repeatedly having been completely correct, entails cranium-bursting levels of cognitive dissonance. Error! Error! Does not compute! ::: smoke bursts from ears :::

True enough - but as long as they're not threatening to slit everyone else's throat or performing female circumcisions on their daughters, it's not my business.

I once knew a man who had been raised Amish and left the community. He was very torn. Part of him had hated that life and yet, he was a hard worker, very moral and honest - and he attributed that to his upbringing. He missed the closeness and warmth of that community and hated its' narrow horizons.

When people get power and think they are experts on everything, they think that they know how to put together a sports team. I saw this when I worked in sports from one of the owners of the team I worked with. The coach would come up with a list of players he wanted and bring it to me to make it happen. We would put it together and the owner would come in and want to make all kinds of changes. He had no idea what was needed, but he liked to hang out with some of the players, and he wanted to play fantasy owner. It drove us crazy. Putin did it because if it worked, he would get all the credit. It's been 22 years since they won the gold medal, and he thought if they won it on their home soil, he would get all the glory. Didn't work.

384 I read (well, actually I listened to the book on CD while commuting to and from work) Jared Diamond's "The World Before Yesterday" where he compared a lot of traditional societies to modern western society.

One of the things he talked about was breast feeding.  Apparently in traditional societies, children breast feed about every 14 minutes for a minute or two at a time.  Children also breast feed from their mother while she is sleeping.  Obviously these mothers do not have 8 to 5 office jobs but apparently they are able to dig up roots or what ever sort of hunting and gathering they do despite the frequent interruptions.

I am not sure that this information adds anything to the discussion but you can file it away as stuff some guy said on the internet.

Actually, I'm surprised rad fems don't name their girls vagina. They're so proud of having one. And they think all the non-vagina'ed people are evil and bad. It's the only thing that matters to them so why not name their kid after their most - their only -valued bodily part?

Perhaps because they don't have daughters?

Many Israelis I know are supporting Russia against the Ukrainian Neo-Nazis. Jews in Odessa are joining Pro-Russian groups in hopes of intervention against the Svoboda regime. Please do the research and do not fall for the propaganda spreading among conservative outlets.

506 do you have enough space to have a dozen casks of mead aging in sequence? cool if you do. long lead, especially if you find you have to tweak your recipe after your first is ready. 11 more coming down the pike not to your liking.

Posted by: yankeefifth at March 02, 2014 02:49 AM (rDidD)

Well from what I have read you can make it in 5 gallon batches which should give around 25 bottles, so really 2 batches a year would do it. I think its about $3-4 a bottle when you are done, which is way better than $30. I didn't read too deep into it, but it seems you can tweak it a bit as its aging, but I'm not sure. There seems to be some good recipes out there, so I would think it would be halfway decent on the first run, unless something tragic happens. I don't know, I just want a shitload of it. lol

Should be driving back just before the rain hits this evening.
Then a foot of snow throughout the night and into Monday.

Mostly, because Baltimore County has no school snow days left to use.

536 VIA, snow days, disaster days and calamity days seem to be getting a lot of ink from coast to coast this week. Looks like time for Congress to look into "Our National System of Snow Days."

That will bring the 12-month school year people out of the woodwork, and we'll be back to the bizarre calculus of whether NEA teachers are laid off in the summer, or on sabbatical.

Not that it would bother his immoral flock, who would find his worst behaviors adorable, but for the bunch of somewhat more moral followers whom he has worked so hard to fool all along.
