Congratulations - Your Family Now Owns a House
Okay not a house so much as a house mortgage.
Oh and there is no house - just household national debt worthy of a house.
If it makes you feel any better, I guess you can always pretend that your imaginary Federal Debt house is a very nice vacation home that you just happen to never use. Here's mine:
My happy place is out back by the custom BBQ pit and the hot tub. Mmm hot tub.
Romney Was Conservative in 2008 But Not Now - What Happened?
Instapundit wonders what happened to make Romney such a pariah among the base:
But here's my question: Back in 2008, the social-cons were all-in for Romney, to the point where Hugh Hewitt's take became a running tagline ("You know who this is good for? Mitt Romney!") that's still used by by bloggers from time to time. Now, not so much. So what changed about Romney since 2008 to make him un-conservative?UPDATE: Reader Allen Covert writes: "When he stopped running against McCain. Standing next to McCain will make almost anybody look conservative."
Of course back then the worst possible transgression against conservatism was Shamnesty, now it's RomneyCare I guess.
Because sometimes your assault rifle wants to accessorize with a 12 gauge:
After over a decade of development, and testing and tweaking, the U.S. Army is finally issuing the M26 12 Gauge Modular Accessory Shotgun Systems (MASS) to the troops. There are two versions of MASS. The one that attaches underneath the barrel of an assault rifle weighs 1.2 kg (2.7 pounds) and is 420mm (16.5 inches) long. The standalone version weighs 1.9 kg (4.25 pounds) and is 610mm (24 inches) long (with the stock collapsed). Both versions of the M26 have a five round magazine and are basically a 12 gauge shotgun that can be operated right or left handed. It fires solid shot for blasting open closed doors or lower velocity, non-lethal (most of the time) rubber slugs for dealing with hostile crowds.
Whit Stillman Has a New Movie: 'Damsels in Distress'
So Whit Stillman finally has a new movie out, Damsels in Distress, which looks pretty good from the trailer. If you enjoyed his previous movies - Metropolitan, The Last Days of Disco, and Barcelona - then you'll probably like this one too. And even though I haven't watched it in years, I'd say a line or scene from Barcelona still pops into my head about every 8 weeks or so.
You can test your film knowledge by seeing if you can name every single movie just by the iconic image in this video.
This is your brain on age. The sad part is how few people got the answer right at age 50.

Geekery: Bret Victor and Inventing on Principle
Okay this talk is focused on software development but it applies to other areas as well. I wasn't quite sure where he was going at the beginning (or sure if I would like it) but give it some time to see why it's worth watching.
And yes this is pretty geeky. But you don't have to be a geek to get something out of it.

But I am really liking Newt's drawn-sword response to the SCOAMF's abjectly groveling Afghan apology earlier today. To wit:
"There seems to be nothing that radical Islamists can do to get Barack Obama's attention in a negative way and he is consistently apologizing to people who do not deserve the apology of the President of the United States, period. And, candidly, if Hamid Karzai, the president of Afghanistan, doesn't feel like apologizing then we should say good bye and good luck, we don't need to be here risking our lives and wasting our money on somebody who doesn't care."
THAT is the kind of rhetoric I want to hear a lot more of.
Still... could Newt win in the fall with adult-voter negatives as high as he has? And could he refrain from talking crazy shit about moon bases and instead stick to scorching rejoinders like the one he just uncorked?
Grumble. Where's that bottle of Val-U-Rite?

Deep down, the reason you don't do that, isn't because you're afraid of losing your life. It's because you are afraid of losing your JOB.
Macchiavelli had a thing or two to say about that. I forget what it was, but it was along the lines that a man will be quicker to avenge a loss to his patrimony than a loss to his family. (And it was probably pithier in renaissance Italian.)
Anyway, my recommendation for anyone who's looking to write on the Islam topic is simply to move out of a city where there's lots of Muslims, and find a job where there aren't lots of Muslims. Then you don't have to live in fear.

The funny thing about Vader being Luke's father is that it only came up in a later draft of The Empire Strikes Back.
The idea that Lucas had the whole saga mapped out back then is nonsense. They were doing character concepts and things even for Episodes 2 and 3-- one early version of the character that became Count Dooku was female. (I'd go on, but I assume the few here who care already know.)

That makes sense. He had based the saga on old sci-fi movie serials, like from the 40s and 50s. "Flash Gordon", mostly, from what I hear. The point was to keep people involved in the characters, not the plot so much.
I do suspect that Lucas always knew Luke and Leia to be brother and sister. But, in heroic sagas, that didn't always stop... stuff happening.

No, the reason I didn't make a big thing about the Islam research I was doing wasn't fear of my life. It was because I had a job, with a coworker who was a (secularish) Muslim, but a Muslim quick to rat people out to Human Resources - if he had a holy book, it was Michael Moore's "Stupid White Men" more than the Qur'an.
I ain't proud of it. But that's the facts. I would rather have been beheaded on video than to face a meeting with HR.
Things changed when I quit. (Well, he quit first. But there were other Muslims around at that job.)

There in a nutshell is why Islam gets the lefty love even with their denigration of religion. To the lefties, Islam is not a religion, it's a culture and even a race

"If what you said was true there should have been no shortage of people taking up her cause. There are tens of millions of Americans who live hard-core red states with almost no muslims. Yet none of them put their name out there. Cause they don't want the hassle, they don't want the threats. They want to enjoy their life in peace. A perfectly reasonable response."
The Muslim threat is real, but the government, in the form of one or more DAs, is the much bigger threat. It is the threat of prosecution, and the inevitable financial destruction, even if not guilty, that causes most Americans to do nothing.

Don't remember who asked, but: I've been in radio broadcasting for 27 years. Outside of a few years in retail, it's all I've ever done. The job pool for on-air personalities continues to shrink, however, and I've grown tired of "town to town, up and down the dial". I'd rather stay put.
There is good news...I got a callback today for a follow-up interview. It's retail, just part-time, but I'll take what I can get. I'm also working on finding ways to monetize what was until now my hobby -- my online radio station (link in the sig if you'd like to check it out).
I've decided I'll go ahead and apply for EBT so my teenager can continue to eat me out of house and home without actually eating the house. When things get better, I'll dump it. I didn't want to do it because the country's screwed up enough as it is, and I didn't want to make things worse fiscally (even if what I draw out is statistically zero). But I'll also sacrifice anything for my kids, including my pride.
The way I see it, the fact that I dislike being on any kind of government dole will make me work harder to get off of it.
Thanks again, y'all.

I dunno about the Luke/Leia thing-- it's clear that the Original Trilogy was being at least mostly made up as it went (which is fine, because there was no guarantee that SW or Empire would each get a sequel)- but it's possible. (One rejected Marvel comics story had a second Death Star, waaaay before Jedi's plot was known. The superweapon was renamed and redesigned, and the story was approved, so clearly there was some plan or rules in place.)
Another example. In the Marvel comics before Return of the Jedi, Jabba the Hut(sic) was a humanoid guy, and of course many know about the fur-wearing Scotsman cut from Star Wars and fishman Han Solo and that Lando was originally going to be a clone. Lots of wacky stuff in the script drafts back then. Once he got to Phantom Menace, I assume he had some broad strokes worked out, but it's not like he had scripts for the remaining two until each one was actually filmed.
Another thing is that back then (late '70's), Lucas wasn't consistent. Sometimes it'd be 9 films total, sometimes more, later he settled on 6. But that still doesn't track with the Ewok films, script development, or anything. Any number greater than 3 was probably a combination of ego, hype, and wishful thinking.

Thus far, this has been a great, smooth running project.

That's hard. The original list was tailored as books for men, and I guess I'll try to keep that in mind. Off the top of my head:
1) The Bible - even non-believers need this to understand the West
2) The Iliad
3) The Odyssey
4) The Meditations of Marcus Aurelius
5) La Morte d'Arthur - something medieval
6) The Prince - perhaps the beginning of the modern mind
7) King Lear - some Shakepeare
Democracy in America - some say the best book about America
9) The Great Gatsby - the American novel
10) something from the East like The Art of War? Or Russian - Crime and Punishment?

I should also mention that before Star Wars, Lucas apparently tried to buy the rights to Flash Gordon, and couldn't get them. As the saying goes, "Genius borrows, talent steals." It's widely believed that Lucas kinda-sorta actively plagarized from Flash Gordon, just changing things enough and putting his own spin on things to make Star Wars look new and fresh. (Which it really was-- most 70's sci-fi was depression dystopias and boring B-movies, not swashbuckling action and adventure.)
In any case, I bet most writers' and creators' early work especially bear incredible resemblences to whatever the hell they were reading/watching/whatever anyway, so I don't know how fair the plagarism charge I repeated is.

One of the best books I have read on Communists, and their infiltration of the US government during the 30's-60's was Witness by Whittaker Chambers. It deals with the Alger Hiss/Rosenberg trials in depth, and as CHambers was a defector from Communism, it gives an insider's view of the machinations of the fellow travelers.
Posted by: moki at February 23, 2012 11:03 PM (dZmFh)
I'm through the first 1/3 of "Witness" myself, and it's pretty incredible. I don't think I've ever seen a better written, more passionate, and utterly full-throated defense of western culture vs. the east (as it existed at the time)...and I haven't even gotten to the trial yet. Chambers was a magnificent writer.

Thank God my dumbass BIL is alive and on the mend, though in critical condition. The doctors said he should've died. My sister is a total wreck.
The PA unemployment idiots are sending me contradicting letters every five days or so. I've been on unemployment for well over 96 weeks and all I want is a fucking job.
They sent me a letter last Friday saying I was cut off. Today I got a letter saying I was eligible for another 14 weeks as long as I provided weekly claims that I was seeking employment twice every week - but only by two different sources - mail, internet, direct, phone or "other", such as a jobfest.
So I hit craigslist today and will apply at Burger King tomorrow.
I (think I) did well on an interview today so hopefully this bullshit will soon be over.

I haven't bren able to really read in years due to migraines. They are often pain free but screw with my sight like crazy. However, this afternoon, my cardiologist got together with my family doc and my neurologist and decided to do a TEE test. If he finds what he's looking for (a loose flap in my heart) they can fix it and a side effect of the repair is, it seems, fewer or no migraines!

Thumbprint Cellars in Healdsburg, CA. The wine club I belong to is Christopher Creek, and they make a delicious petite sirah. Yeah, cab franc is underrated.

It came out a couple years back, right? When I went to see it, the cinema had at least two men about my age taking their 10 year old daughters to see it.
It was pretty messed up. I liked the movie though. Nic Cage is great in it.

New Michigan Rosetta Stone poll after debate has Romney at 36 and Santorum at 33.
Among registered Republicans in Michigan:
Romney 42
Santorum 33
Paul 8
Gingrich 8
Santorum is only still close to Romney because Democrats in Michigan are going for Santorum 36 versus Romney 3 (three percent).

That seems reasonable. We all are more familiar with the arguments for why Romneycare won't work (romneycare is an actual example of it not working).
And the right is expecting a lot more than it did in 2008. We have changed and see spending as more urgent. We say the 'electable' guy get his ass kicked and we're less gullible about that argument.

The gun...I call her Vera.
Anyhoo, at lunch today I was chatting with a twenty-something, college-educated co-worker. She has a 29-year-old friend with a master's degree in some kind of the arts who is working part-time in retail, and was offered another position at the same store for more money. Great, you'd think, right? But he decided to turn it down because he was afraid it would screw up his food stamps eligibility.
I reacted to that, saying, "He's on food stamps!?"
And she shrugged nonchalantly and said, "Half my friends are."
This just really brought the awfulness of what's happened to the economy home to me. And I'm not sure what I find more horrifying: the fact that college grads in the prime of their lives are scraping by at the fringes of the economy because there are no jobs, or that they are seemingly okay with that.I mean, isn't "humger" just another word for "initiative"? How come this guy isn't working his ass off to feed himself? Also, I can't imagine a situation where I would admit to being on food stamps to anyone, but I guess the stigma is completely gone.

So you got to give up something for 40 days, right?
I've always thought that that's a giant recipe for shenanigans.
Can't one just give up monogamy for 40 days?
"Oh, dear wife, I do love you so, and because of that I must give you up for 40 days for Lent. Now I must go plow these hot young co-eds lusting for my fluids."

Thankfully I'm not Catholic.
And thankfully, being a bit ethnic, means I don't have to go far to burn crosses. I just set it up in my own yard to teach myself a lesson. That'll learn me for gettin' out of place, yessir.

And another thing -- my pressure was so high that I'd wake up the first couple of weeks feeling like a donkey had kicked me in the chest, so it took almost a month before I really started noticing the alertness. Now, if I miss a day (like on a flight), I can instantly tell.

I wonder what would have happened had I written to the Pope about it?
Would a secret Vatican hit squad have gone out and eliminated that priest?
Taken him into a dungeon and whipped and tortured him like in the Da Vinci Code?

I don't think they transubstantiated it long enough. I would have thought I would have exploded into a thousand tiny pieces after consuming it. I think it was still just a cracker.
Okay, cool, I guess that means I didn't technically take communion and that priest won't have to worry about Vatican torture/killers.

That sounds pretty good. Unfortunately, though, I am prone to migraines....and always with the same trigger: I can eat yellow cheese, red wine, chocolate, and nuts; I can eat any two in an evening.....but if I eat three, I've got about a 90% chance of spending the next day in a dark room drinking fluids and snarfing ibuprofen, whimpering from the awful pain.

cthulhu, pain is payment for disobeying Harry Callahan's 1st law. Mr. Gerd had been knocking on my door fairly often. One-half glass red wine every six or seven days is my limitation these days.
When Bride gets migraines, I am a helpless fool. At times, and against her wishes, I get her to the ER for relief. She is conked out the next day, but in no pain.

Sorry, should have been more specific. I meant dress shirt. If you're wearing a 16/32-34, meh....but once your neck size goes up from there, your chances of having sleep apnea go up exponentially.
Funny thing is, it doesn't matter why -- 60% of NFL linebackers have sleep apnea.

1. Go to the SS place, get in jammies, have sensors attached to various body parts, sleep. Get up in AM, shower, go home or work as appropriate.
2. Same, except wearing one of a small variety of gizmos on face to keep airway open.
The result of #1 tells how bad the problem may be.
The result of #2 tells whether gizmo helps.
I have no regrets doing the SS. Stage 2 caused me trouble with high anxiety. Thus, the reason for desensivity trial at home. The idea is, I wear the gizmo for increasingly longer periods over time, starting with just a few minutes until I become comfortable (or not) then retake stage 2 (or not).
There are no other options on the list that I am willing to do. It's Cpap, or try to live with the apnea. An iffy proposition for some.

For my test #1, the results were: "bad, very bad" (said in voices of LGM from Toy Story). If I were examined by EMTs after a car crash, and had blood oxygen levels like I notched in my jammies, they'd be discussing potential Dain Bramage with my BH. As it was, somehow I was used to it.
And for test #2, things started getting better at a very high pressure. On my latest, they started getting better at about 16, got better still at 17, continued to improve at 18, were still showing available improvement at 19.....and the test ended because the machine topped out. I now have a self-adjusting machine that goes up to 25, and it says the sweet spot is 22.

Cali then was a may issue state. I do not know if they have changed that corruption filled nonsense. It's a pay to play monstrosity.
With regards to Officer Smith's thesis, I agree. With regards to his reasoning, I agree. With regard to his example, I am skeptical a weapon would help unless in the hands of a friendly bystander. If I understand the example correctly, the vic was immobilized immediately.
If I still lived in Cali, and did not have a state sanctioned carry permit, I would carry. YMMV. Keeping a very low profile can help prevent being victim of unlawful laws.
There is a very high price to being judged by...etc. Minimum retainer can be $50,000, or more, so I am told. And every round loosed downrange comes with a lawyer attached to it. Everything I have ever worked for could be lost. My family would be penniless and homeless.
Nevertheless one must weigh these things. To beg on one's knees for life, or hope one can survive the after effects of a possible felony conviction and subsequent civil suit.
There are some states that are much less problematic. Texas and Florida come to mind.
My state of residence is a shall issue state. I have a state carry permit in addition to my retired LEO "any state" permit. These are comforting when I travel to and from range days with a metric butt load of arms and ammo. When I go into the National Forest, I carry. Around town, rarely. Though that may change. Three murders in three days in this rural area where doors are never locked.
I have rambled far too long. Time to shut up and read the responses of others.

I'm calling bullshit on that mind and aging chart. I'm not a big gambler, like most of the Moron Horde. ...but... The only lotterys I've ever seen or heard of...always, but always... split the payout when they had multiple winners. iow, in the real world, each of those winners would take home...$400,000 before taxes. The payout is always split. (I'm not talking about lottery 'clubs' that put money in the kitty every week to buy a ticket.)
If you live in a theoretical world, yeah, five separate Powerball winners with the same number would each take home $300 million dollars if they all won a big Powerball jackpot. A small state jackpot that pays the full amount to five different winners is a rare exception.
