How Popular Is Your State?

So Public Policy Polling had a survey asking Americans whether they have a favorable or unfavorable view of various states as a whole.

tv-shows-state

It turns out that people like Hawaii best and the top 10 are viewed positively by a large margin:

54% see Hawaii positively and only 10% negatively, followed in the top ten by Colorado (44-9), Tennessee (48-14), South Dakota (42-8 ), Virginia (45-13), Montana (39-7), Alaska (46-17), Oregon (43-14), and North Carolina and Pennsylvania (each 40-11).

Here are the bottom 5 with California disliked by a near majority:

Only five are in negative territory, led by California (27% favorable and 44% unfavorable), Illinois (19-29), New Jersey (25-32), Mississippi (22-28 ), and Utah (24-27).

But one of the bottom five doesn't really fit and John Hinderaker has a theory:

There are a lot of interesting comparisons to be drawn, but one concerns me a little. The mountain states are almost universally popular. Colorado is the second most favorably viewed state, but most of the other mountain states are not far behind, e.g., Montana (39/7) and Idaho (30/11). The anomaly is Utah. At 24/27, it is the fifth-least favorably perceived state.

How can that be? If you like Colorado, Idaho and Montana, why would you dislike Utah? I can't think of any reason other than anti-Mormon bias.

Anyone have an alternative hypothesis?

Is Michigan Really Make or Break for Romney?

Well I had just assumed that's the case since I've heard this repeated over and over by the various pundits, blogs, and the media. But Neo-neocon actually bothered to look into this and it turns out that there's very little reason to think so.

As she points out he grew up there but after 1969 or so he moved to Massachusetts and never came back. His father was governor of Michigan in the 60's, but 40+ years is eons in political time. If he was a favorite son you'd expect to have seen it in 2008 but you didn't.

Ah, you say, but Romney won hands down there in 2008. Let's see:

Romney: 38.92%
McCain: 29.68%
Huckabee: 16.08%
Ron Paul: 6.27%

So whether you want Romney to win in MI or go down in flames the moral here is that an awful lot of political commentary includes statements that sound reasonable but really aren't true. You should always do sanity checks and verify on your own.

Meet the New AK: The AK-12

There's a new AK in town. He's no looker but he's meaner and more modular:

The difference between the new AK-12 and its previous models is that it can be operated with one hand. The designers decided to install safety switches on both sides of the rifle rather than on the just right-hand side. The capacity of its magazine has been doubled to 60 rounds, while its accuracy has been improved, the new model has enhanced target pointer and a higher quality of barrel. The designers have built integrated Picatinny rail at the top of the cover to enable the use of additional equipment such as optical, bore sighter or night vision equipment.

This is pretty much for export only as the Russians have got millions of AK-variants currently sitting in warehouses.

7 Of The Strangest Services Offered On Fiverr

So Fiverr is a web service where odd job services are offered for just $5. And unshockingly you can find some pretty odd offerings.

This one - 'I Will Dance To Any Song In A Hot Dog Costume' is intriguing and another one - 'I Will Be Your Facebook Girlfriend For One Week' - might be just the ticket to get you out of your Forever Alone rut.

This is a Burglary Tool in California

They're little bits of aluminum oxide ceramic, like the insulator on a sparkplug. Even a small piece flung at tempered glass will make it shatter thoroughly and relatively quietly (that's the ninja part). Ideal for smash and grabs.

So much so that California has declared them de facto burglary tools. A court in Washington state accepted possession as proof of intent to burgle.

The Bristol Stool Chart

Everything to do with your body has an official name and classification scale. And your turds are no exceptions:

What It's Like To Open A Business in Greece

Surprisingly it also involves the Bristol Stool chart. Here's what's required to open an online business:

Antonopoulos and his partners spent hours collecting papers from tax offices, the Athens Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the municipal service where the company is based, the health inspector's office, the fire department and banks. At the health department, they were told that all the shareholders of the company would have to provide chest X-rays, and, in the most surreal demand of all, stool samples.

And then you have this:

My friend explained that the owner of the bookstore/café couldn't get a license to provide coffee. She had tried to just buy a coffee machine and give the coffee away for free, thinking that lingering patrons would boost book sales.  However, giving away coffee was illegal as well. Instead, the owner had to strike a deal with a bar across the street, whereby they make the coffee and the waitress spends all day shuttling between the bar and the bookstore/café. My friend also explained to me that books could not be purchased at the bookstore, as it was after 18h and it is illegal to sell books in Greece beyond that hour. I was in a bookstore/café that could neither sell books nor make coffee.

The 66 Sexiest Redheads in the World

And no the G. Mafia hasn't gotten to us and the recent ads from Ginger Monthly have absolutely no influence at all on editorial decisions of the blog.

Plus there's the question of exactly makes one a ginger. Some go by the one drop of dye rule but others do not:

Before you go on though, let's get this out of the way: Defining who is and who isn't a redhead is a tricky business. Is Scarlett Johansson a redhead because she appears as such in many films? We're going with no. Is Emma Stone a redhead even though she admits that she dyes it that way? We're saying yes. Pretty much if we think of them as redheads because that's how we've seen them the most then they're on this list. Is it an exact science? Not at all. Could you argue with some of these choices? Sure. But the one thing you can't argue with is that all of these ladies are very, very attractive.

16 The AK-12 has a 60 round magazine, and the implication is that it's the one in the picture. I wonder if the Russians have made a working triple- or quadruple-stack magazine design work. It would be nice to see the scale of the weapon: the magazine doesn't look much longer than a 30 round one.

23 Utah is unpopular because the media have been using it as a punchline and villainizing it for at least 20 years now. Mormons are decent, hard-working people, the state is majority-white, and it's a bastion of Republican support. Therefore it must be depicted as a land of horror.

36 I've developed a pretty robust theory to explain liberal thought. They have some kind of inverter circuit in their brains. Consequently any concept which a normal, sane, reasonable adult might agree with gets twisted in Liberal Brains into a bizarre or absurd opposite. They then defend this corrupt version vehemently, and attack you as racist or something for opposing it.

Example: for two thousand years now (if not longer) most rational people have agreed that calling someone "a godly man" is a compliment, and indicates a person of good character who would make a good leader.

Run this through the Liberal Brain Inverter: religious candidates are all horrible fanatics! And if you support them you HATE WOMEN! And we'll come up with disgusting scatological/sexual insults about religious candidates! Because religion has caused all problems, everywhere!

Try it yourselves. It's amazing how it works to predict liberal ideas.

39 How can that be? If you like Colorado, Idaho and Montana, why would you dislike Utah? I can't think of any reason other than anti-Mormon bias. Hinderacker is an ass. Has he ever BEEN to these states? I'm thinking NOT. Colorado is about as far from Utah as New York is from Alabama. It doesn't take bigotry to not like the LDS lifestyle that predominates in Utah... or to at least, from a distance, not be attracted to what the picture of the state that lifestyle presents. No gambling, restricted drinking, fewer loose women, most things closed on Sunday. Add onto that a state with large tracts of desert (not all of it the pretty orange rock type, either), a landscape many folks do not like. Folks in Utah are proud of their state. Justifiably. Of the states I've lived in, Utah is second only to Texas in the pride its natives feel for their state. But if you are thinking about states as places to live or places to vacation, it is not at all surprising to me that a place that prides itself on very strict moral code culturally would not appeal to the majority.

41 Maet, I thought you were out of here for a while. It's a treat to see you on the job, if only for a moment.

Regarding states: my theory is that Western Washington State is gradually turning into some sort of massive lib haven. It used to be that, but only a little bit, and Seattleites' basic courtesy went against the hostile vibe of the progressives. But I think it's shifting.

As for generally asking what you think of a state, after you dispose of the few that people give any thought to, like maybe New York, California, Texas, and New Jersey, it's pretty unclear what the meaning of the exercise is. What do I think of Oklahoma? Damned if I know.

I have a more different theory about the leftist hate for Christianity.

Christianity acts as a check on the power of the state, and since it is based on tradition, specifically the sorts of things the left wants to empower the government to do.

From the liberal perspective, all things that increase the power of the left are good, and all things that weaken it are bad.

So, atheism is good, Christianity is bad. But when Christianity can be used to advance leftist power - traditionally black churches for example, it is suddenly a force for "good".

I've lived in lots of worse places.

Which brings up another point about states.  Especially in the western US, there tends to be lots of geographical and political variation within a given state.  East example for me; SE Oklahoma is hilly, trees, "southern", very Democrat infested.  NW Oklahoma is flat, farm land, midwestern, very much a Republican haven.

73 66 If Liberals hate Christianity so much, why are they so insistent Obama is a Christian? *** Because you get fewer votes if people think you aren't. The same reason they insist he opposes gay marriage in front of some audiences... Posted by: 18-1 at February 27, 2012 10:44 PM (3aXbg) ...but then turn around to add that ( wink, wink!) his position on that is "evolving." Translation: he's really liberal on the issue.

Posted by: CoolCzech at February 27, 2012 06:46 PM (niZvt)

74 49 I have a more different theory about the leftist hate for Christianity.

Christianity acts as a check on the power of the state, and since it is based on tradition, specifically the sorts of things the left wants to empower the government to do.

From the liberal perspective, all things that increase the power of the left are good, and all things that weaken it are bad.

Your theory is excellent. So is the one you responded to. But I do have my own: the way to understand liberals is to imagine "daddy issues," amplified to an overwhelming, life changing paranoia.

Daddy was disappointed in you. Daddy told you that smoking pot was bad. Daddy wanted you to get a job. Worst of all, Daddy looked at you, and judged you. What to do, what to do?

Answer: formulate a world in which judging is bad (those criminals, they could not help it, and anyway, poverty). Anyone talking about morality is bad (Shut up Daddy! When you talk like that, it makes me feel bad about myself!). Anyone standing up for virtue and honor is bad (I can barely keep my shit together from day to day, don't talk to me about honor, I can't afford it). Of course Christians are bad (they talk about right and wrong, and sin, which means they see me and judge me). Down with bad Daddy (that George Bush guy)! Up with good Daddy (Bill Clinton, he won't judge! Obama, he forgives me, and he judges only those who would judge me!)

The predictive power of this one is pretty good too.

80 66 This is why. In a Forbes article, "My Muslim President Obama: Why members of the faith see him as one of the flock," writer Asma Gull Hasan elaborates: ince Election Day, I have been part of more and more conversations with Muslims in which it was either offhandedly agreed that Obama is Muslim or enthusiastically blurted out. In commenting on our new president, "I have to support my fellow Muslim brother," would slip out of my mouth before I had a chance to think twice. "Well, I know he's not really Muslim," I would quickly add. But if the person I was talking to was Muslim, they would say, "yes he is." Â…. Most of the Muslims I know (me included) can't seem to accept that Obama is not Muslim. Of the few Muslims I polled who said that Obama is not Muslim, even they conceded that he had ties to IslamÂ…. The rationalistic, Western side of me knows that Obama has denied being Muslim, that his father was non-practicing, that he doesn't attend a mosque. Many Muslims simply say back, "my father's not a strict Muslim either, and I haven't been to a mosque in years." Obama even told The New York Times he could recite the adhan, the Islamic call to prayer, which the vast majority of Muslims, I would guess, do not know well enough to recite. [Read the entire article, which is more eye-opening than the author probably intended.]

Yeah, they do that, but ask them if they're "judging" and I'll bet they'd deny it. What they do is, they cluster. There are ways you indicate that you are "of the body." Drive a Prius, talk cheerfully of "single-payer health care," and, mostly, nod a lot when people ring the right bells. And yes, they judge very harshly, anyone who makes it clear that they stand apart and disagree. But they don't consider it judging. They consider it common sense, and consider their ideological opponents to be not adversaries, but utterly unredeemable evil in a way that no intelligent person would deny. Not judging, according to them, just standing up for what any intelligent, educated person would find obvious. This isn't theory. I've been around these people plenty.

They hate that, yes, but there seems to be a tendency to not want to call attention to it. I think because they know those people understand them all too well. How many escaped cult victims return to the cult?  Whereas the mere existence of a conservative from one of the designated victim groups that they think they own, sends them into a fulminating frenzy of hatred that they're not at all shy about expressing.

151 Stopped to chat with the price sign changer at our local gas station today. Here is what she said:

When new delivery is made, a measurement of the gas in the tanks is done before tanks are filled. When a volume of the of old price gas is pumped, the price sign changer changes the sigh to reflect their cost of the new price gas.

She told me most other stations in our area increase the prices without consideration that some of the gas in their tanks was old price gas.

Nah they are, I built a condo project in Deer Valley. They just make drinking a hassle, you had to be a member to go to a bar and you had to bring your own booze. They would keep your booze for you and charge you about the same price to mix you a drink out of your own booze. You could get a membership at the door though.  After you had  a membership you just had to remember to bring your own booze when you went back. I think the memberships were free but that was back in the 80's. Maybe not.

But hey, at least I get to cast a vote for an actual incumbent Republican congressman (Roscoe Bartlett) due to the legislature's ridiculous 2010 gerrymandering.  On the downside, he'll probably lose his reelection race by virtue of the fact that my residence is now in his district, because I'm surrounded by rich braindead liberals.

(In a double dose of irony, this same area sent a Republican, Connie Morella, to Congress for over a decade until she was gerrymandered out of her seat in 2002 and it was won by Chris Van Hollen, currently Nancy Pelosi's right-hand man in the Dem caucus.  Sure she was a moderate-liberal Republican, but dear god was she better than Van Hollen.  She was also one of the greatest 'constituent services' Congresscritters in recent history and personally lovely lady to boot.)

228 I hate it when liberals do it, I hate it more when conservatives do it.....assume that people are bigots.  Utah's negative rating is NOT because people are anti-Mormon (though there is very good reason for them to be if they knew of the history of the Mormon wars), but rather that Americans are FREEDOM loving people.  When they think of Utah they think of not being able to be free to drink or do bad things, for whatever reason, so they get a negative feel to them.  Whether they were Mormons or Quakers who run the government, it's the anti-freedom part that rubs Americans the wrong way.

I was flabbergasted.  CNN has the study from Berkely (oh, really?) and it mentions nothing about the candy stealers, but plenty of other ghastly unethical behavior from the so called rich.  Nah. No propaganda being fed to the masses. None whatsoever.  Nice editorializing pile on.

Documents obtained by The Washington Examiner suggest the Obama administration missed at least one major opportunity to help opposition groups in Iran that has not previously been reported. In November 2009, leaders of the Green party, which had staged a revolt on the streets of Tehran in June of that year, sent a long memo through channels to the Obama administration that some analysts said was a clear call for help.

"So now, at this pivotal point in time, it is up to the countries of the free world to make up their mind," states the opposition memo dated Nov. 30, 2009. "Will they continue on the track of wishful thinking and push every decision to the future until it is too late, or will they reward the brave people of Iran and simultaneously advance the Western interests and world peace."

The eight-page memo describes the current regime under Ayatollah Ali Khamenei as a "brutal, apocalyptic theocratic dictatorship."

The memo warns that Iran "with its apocalyptic constitution will never give up the atomic bomb, nor will it give up its terror network, because it needs these instruments to maintain its power and enhance its own economic and financial wealth."

250 WASHINGTON (AP) — Israeli officials say they won't warn the U.S. if they decide to launch a pre-emptive strike against Iranian nuclear facilities, according to one U.S. intelligence official familiar with the discussions. The pronouncement, delivered in a series of private, top-level conversations, sets a tense tone ahead of meetings in the coming days at the White House and Capitol Hill.

Israeli officials said that if they eventually decide a strike is necessary, they would keep the Americans in the dark to decrease the likelihood that the U.S. would be held responsible for failing to stop Israel's potential attack. The U.S. has been working with the Israelis for months to persuade them that an attack would be only a temporary setback to Iran's nuclear program.

265 As I have mentioned here before, I am someone who has lived in nearly a dozen states, including poor rural - rich city, far south to far north and midwest and west.  If I could drop some of my thoughts about Utah, where I have lived off and on in my later years.

*Until the late 90's when a surge of Californians and Mexicans flooded here it had a lot of for conservatives.

*In terms of cultural rot its no different then anywhere else, just 10-20 years behind most of the rest of the country.

*Salt Lake City has not had republican mayor since the 60's

*Regular Sunday attending Mormons, on average I think, make up about 20-30% of the state.  Some areas much higher some lower.

*most of the population is crammed into the narrow and somewhat crowded Wasatch front.

*Its got pretty conservative gun laws, etc..

*Its got low education spending but proportionally very high spending -graduation rates.

*The three main population factions here are -White Trash -Mexicans -Mormons... all of which have very high birth rates.  (literally the youngest average age state in the nation and 2nd lowest obesity rate)

*Only in small town rusty midwest have I lived in a  place where so many people ,who have never lived anywhere else and barely traveled, are so convinced they live in the most awful, restrictive, boring, place in America.

*Anti-Mormon sentiment runs high here.. its like mini-version of the middle east where any internal neurosis or societal ill, real/imagined big or small can be blamed on the local scapegoat.

*One time, while getting my windshield replaced, I asked the guy what cost of the ticket for a cracked windshield was.. he angrily responded... "Probably nothing if your Mormon!"  I used to work in Crook Country Chicago... that guy has no idea.  Second I know a fair number of local cops,  very few cops are practicing Mormons... because Cops tend to work sundays, drink coffee, and smoke.

*This is actually one of the nicer places in the world to live, between Moab and Park City you have literally world class outdoor fun.  I could go on.

*While any group has their friendlies and Jerks, Mormons are pretty great neighbors... unless your like me, and weary of the noise of children playing.

*Half my family is Southern Baptist and my wife is from Kentucky. I grew up attending vacation bible school, the other side are all various Protestants.  Protestants here in Utah, are different and frankly more aggresively obnoxious then anywhere else I have lived.  They have a real constant persecuted whiny vibe and for instance their church road signs are often either passive aggressive shots at Mormons or like rip off some Mormon behavior that I have never seen another protestant do, say, or think.

*Its a right to work state, the government is mostly under control,  state debt is minimal, cops and judges still have some old America principles,  Local Mormons are if anything too friendly to strangers...(it puts me off.. my Chicago/Seattle instincts say not to trust someone being weirdly friendly to strangers.. lol )

Anyway,  that is my experience and what I can add to your brain box.

The FBI has enlisted Michael Douglas, best known for his role as the ruthless financial executive Gordon Gekko in the film Wall Street, in the Bureau's efforts to crackdown on the rising number of insider trading cases. While Gekko lived by the mantra that "Greed, for lack of a better word, is good," Douglas is now asking corporate employees and financial traders to report insider trading and securities fraud to the FBI.

Appearing in a public service announcement that begins with a scene from Wall Street, Douglas says, "In the movie Wall Street I play Gordon Gekko, a greedy corporate executive who cheated to profit while innocent investors lost their savings. The movie was fiction, but the problem is real."

"Our economy is increasingly dependent on the success and the integrity of the financial markets," Douglas says in the video produced by the FBI. "If a deal looks too good to be true, it probably is. For more information on how you can identify securities fraud, or to report insider training, contact your local FBI office. Or submit a tip online at tips.fbi.gov."

If Obama gets re-elected, I'll consider that permission to do whatever the fuck I want to everyone else. Steal, cheat, defraud, whatever. No more altruism, no more patriotism. The country's going to be fucked and I want to do some of the fucking.

306 Elongated collapse is of present. A whole new school of economics based on old school certainties applied to market recapitalization through zero interest and creeping velocity of money against an incorrigible fed debt and balance sheet where the ultimate delta is in the end complete collapse staved by currency reset of at least 40 percent minus.

I've been reading the defenses on Utah with a slight smirk. My mother used to threaten my brother and I that we were gonna "move to Utah" if our behavior didn't improve. I grew up and still live in Philadelphia (which has been the subject of more than few unfair attacks on this blog, but I'm used to it), and I can imagine some mother in Utah threatening to move the kids here ....

Posted by: lous a girl at February 28, 2012 12:06 AM (fHyXI)

This is another one of those things I hear constantly, and have not found any increased levels here with any sort of related religious dynamic.  Cronyism and nepotism happen everywhere.   In big cities its big government, in small towns channels through old families, in medium sized towns its old school friends and drinking buddies.   In big, medium, and small places here I found familiar patterns.  Perhaps you could tell me where you have lived where its different, because I have found it to be no different then the rest of North America.

I have not been to any church in over a decade so its not like they saw me in the pews and gave me a wink wink nod nod.  Never have my wife or I been asked in a job interview what religion we are or do they even hint around it.   If you can tell, I am fairly alert and perceptive and would pick up on it.  Surprisingly they always, they do get quite interested and want to know what it was like to live other places based of past resume locations or even my out of state license plates... like distracting amounts of interest and they get really excited about all the details.. They really should move away.  They all treat their hometown, like someone who married the first girl they dated in high school and now are aging and have pent up energy to explore outside curiosities.  That dynamic happens a lot.

Employment wise, what I have found is lower then average pay and pretty low pay for entry level positions.. but again that;s because of the low average age and higher then average amount of clean cut white youths.  Until we had worked our way up in our field I was not used to being an eloquent white youth in a suit felt so taken for granted in a job interview.  In Chicago I typically got the job just based off that right away.  Granted that was with Raymond James where appearance and verbal presentation is most of the job.

Not that I am above criticizing people, I just hate when people badmouth people based off bias.. like how lefties call everyone not with them racists.

My biggest criticism of here is the young married age even among totally none religious people is weird.. but its so disastrous that it should familiar patterns I have seen, then the next generation will learn from it and soon they all be hitting 30 single at home living the Euro-American dream, of eternal childhood.

You got that right, Washington used to be a swing state. Then the californian invasion started in 1988. First we fought it, they had to start their own support groups because they were hated. Then they bought us off with their money. We liked building them things they wanted. Then they owned the place. Now we are fighting back.

339 "So is Durango, Co considered Western Slope? We purchased land for retirement(6yr time frame) in Bayfield just east of Durango." I live in Durango. Here's the low down: the city of Durango is very liberal, but the county leans conservative. For example, two out of three county commissioners are Reps. Our state senator is a popular first-term liberal Republican. Our state congressman is also a republican. There is always ongoing tension between the Durango urbanites and the county. You'll love this place. The San Juans are the most beautiful mountains in the world. I wouldn't live anywhere else.

I almost felt the urge to 'tithe' or whatever they call it.  I'm sure that honesty exists all over the country, mostly in small towns, but in Utah you almost expect it.  Plus the desert around the four corners area is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been.

378 Santorum Robocall to Democrats: “Michigan Democrats can vote in the Republican primary on Tuesday. Why is it so important?” the voice on the call says. “Romney supported the bailouts for his Wall Street, billionaire buddies, but opposed the auto bailouts. 386 *I guess the instinct that triggers in me is the same as when a conservative like Palin/Bush would show the slightest religiosity and the left starts screaming about Jackbooted  THEOCRACY!!1!1!!

*With all humans, I have observed that the dominant but shrinking cultures are insecure and abusive.. doesn't matter, secular, religious, hell fans of sports teams are mostly like that. While the minority culture is in your face and aggressive/passive aggressive.  Lots of talk about "the cause"

*Where I grew up everyone argued about John Deer vs Case tractors... Later it was Ford vs Chevy..   My Dad was an Engineer at the local Nuclear plant so I didn't quite connect with their "conflict" and most of the "turf wars" I have been in the middle of since then have all sounded mostly the same to me.

*The most you can do is try to help the people move on (since grudges end up like the middle east) but also must identify those like the militant factions of Islam and the authoritarian aristocrat redistribution factions where extermination at some point is an openly/privately accepted part of the plan...you got be able to distinguish their aggression from standard insecure cultural aggression.  Like American conservatives after the 60's and like the left did after 9/11 just misread it all as cultural conflict... not a deadly serious strategy of invasion and imperialist conquering.

388 Well iving in the most popular State, I must concur. Although Democratic, it tends to allow personal freedom, the police are fairly normal, the crime rate is low, racism is at an acceptable level in spite of  the far left. But it is expensive and filled with dreamers and stupids. Most from California, but they have infected many, like a disease.

I have grown very much like this myself over recent years.  Even confronted with nice people, random family, the UPS guy that cant just leave the package on the porch... I cant stand small talk.. and don't care for fake kindness.  I get that its "social lube" or whatever.. but I find it increases my friction and wear!

Seen a handful of studies that to be some combo of white, male, working class, religious ... is to be isolated and increasingly anti-social in America.   I can say in my anecdotal evidence of old friends, especially the non-married ones, quite true.  Not sure how much of that is age.. but my older Hispanic guy friends are really active socially.

I have my wife and she has been my best friend for years and I would rather spend all of my time either alone or with her.... sorry for rambling..

393 Well, I grew up in UT. And I am glad its working out for you. They came after my dad with all guns blazing, and told him only good mormons paid their taxes,

WTF? Who the hell are THEY and what were the exact circumstances?

I've lived here nearly all my life and I've never heard any Mormons say "we gotta git them non-Mormons for their dirty non-tax-payin ways."

Or anything else similar. There's obviously lots more to that story than you're telling.

Also, Utah liquor laws change rather frequently, so whatever you experienced a few years back, it's probably different now. Especially in Park City.

399 I don't understand why Utah would make it so low in the ratings.  I have been there several times (and I am not a Mormon).  It is one of the most business friendly states in the union.  If you want to take your family skiing, try a weekend at Bryan Head near Cedar Breaks.  Absolutely magnificent and very family oriented.

I attended the Christmas parade one year in Cedar City.  The dedication for the parade was given by the local Episcopal priest.  You can buy a six pack of beer at a gas station and you can buy a drink at a bar.  Most of what people who have never been to Utah say about Utah is bull.

Great fishing, great hunting, great people.  Salt Lake has its gang problems like any other city of its size but I would move to St. George in a red hot minute if there was work in my field there, but there isn't.  About 2 hour South in Las Vegas would be as close as I could get, probably.

The important thing to me is how they have managed their economy.  Not only are they one of the most business friendly, but they had (the last time I looked) the least unfunded mandates of any state in the union.  They are in pretty good economic shape and just picked up FOUR seats in the US House so their political clout will increase with the federal government.

St. George is one of the fastest growing cities in the country and I can see why.  The place is beautiful, the people are great, and living is affordable.  I would have no problem moving my kids there.

My experience also.

Especially when I was a wee lad. I would ride my bike to the kids night at Mormon Temple for big band music and gurls. It was much better than the Presbyterian youth  group I used to hang with. There, exploring the wonders of feminine charm behind the bushes, was frowned upon, as I recall.

Posted by: Hammersmith Police at February 27, 2012 10:30 PM (Onw8c)

419 @veeka

Semi related anecdote, cant remember where but I was reading about someone who moved from like an old small town coastal NE, where they had friends and neighbors, known for decades, some had not been inside their home.  Then they moved to California... shortly after arriving, after something like a PTA meeting, the adults were all invited over to someones house for get to know each other hot-tubbing.

I have lived between those two extremes but I try and to be mindful of how deeply personal a home is in some cultures.  To some a front door is a drawbridge or castle gate to others its a hippie bead door. lol... that's why I love studying humans.... such fascinating creatures.

448 One commenter is on the right track in that you can not be a bigot against Mormons but also not necessarily want to live in a state dominated by Mormons and Mormon policies. I think he errs in assuming that those polled actually have compared most states firsthand, rather than relying on media portrayals. So you do have a lot of anti-Utah press portraying it as just a strange place.

Not being bigoted does not mean you want to be like someone. Or conform to their way of thinking. It means you tolerate those different from you.

No matter how open people are, most tend to associate with those like themselves--at least as far as how they live every day and how they want to raise their family, for example. I'm okay with Romney as President because he doesn't evidence any intolerance for other religious beliefs. I have very positive views of Mormons (and personally I would certainly consider living in Utah). I don't agree with their religion, however, and would not want anyone of my family converting to it. I don't think that makes me a bigot, but just someone who takes religious beliefs seriously.

Compare Islam. Hopefully most posters here would not discriminate against a neighbor who was Islamic. Would you want to live in and send your children to school in an area where 90 percent of the residents were ardent Muslim believers?

*When politics gets me thinking Americas people are too far gone... I watch Dirty Jobs with Mike Rowe,  the people on that show remind we aren't alone and there are still plenty of decent people left just working their asses off and mostly keeping to themselves.  When the chips are down theyll come out on this side.

Posted by: veeka at February 28, 2012 03:38 AM (sqVOl) *Dies* It was a great kinda political newspaper comic strip that ran in the 80s and a little into the 90s by a guy named Berkley Breathed. The most popular characters in the strip were Opus the penguin and Bill D. Cat, who only ever said *ack* and coughed up hairballs.

See, that's the problem right there. An unugly big boobehed babe at closing time would have been a capture in the seven years between wife number 1 and wife number 2. Then, in the morning, there we would be, looking at each other, saying: Gotta run, run, run, run, oh yeah.

483 I'm sick and tired of all the shut-in virgins waxing noble about redheads when we're contemplating CUTTING and RUNNING from Afghanistan! This is the DOUBLE-PLUS focus of the War on Terrorism. All of our COIN strategies are FOCUSSED on Afghanistan, and to CUT AND RUN is simply handing victory to the same people who orchestrated 9/11. NEVER FORGET! Giving up on Afghanistan is exactly equal to laughing at the bodies falling from the World Trade Centers. Full stop, no BS, if you support cutting and running, you're a TRAITOR. My cousin is deployed in South Korea, and he is INSULTED by the weakness displayed by the White House and right-wing blogs. I know an AUTHENTIC AMERICAN HERO, and even though he's stationed in South Korea, that makes my point relevant. WINNING IN AFGHANISTAN IS EVERYTHING!

If Obama gets re-elected, I'll consider that permission to do whatever the fuck I want to everyone else. Steal, cheat, defraud, whatever. No more altruism, no more patriotism. The country's going to be fucked and I want to do some of the fucking.

I can't really quarrel with that but I can't do it. All I can do is look out for me & my own- my Black Angels & lesbian neighbors, the guy who was my yardman in more affluent times... the rest of 0-merica can have sexual congress with itself.

Not this winter, got some time in last winter though. I got sick of shoveling last winter. I did make the comment last year when I got it that now that I have one it won't snow. I'm going to have to drain the gas out at this rate.

550 I got it that now that I have one it won't snow. I'm going to have to drain the gas out at this rate.

Heh B'er,, that's actually a cheap trade off,, maybe JC should buy a garage full of them.. and if it's that bio shit gas you do want to drain it out. You should put a inline fuel shut off and run it out of gas when done. the bio shit eats up the little parts in the carbs..

551 You know who I think you would like?
Andy McKee.

Frankly, my dear, I no longer give a damn what you think..

On another night, in another place, you'll be me. Snide then, butt head. Frankly, my former friend, your music links have no music content.

I shall speak to you no more, forever.

552 Not me Veeka. Break time The trailers for ME3 are interesting. Thinking about buying a controller and starting the first two

553 Oh, noes. They broke up. I played the ME3 demo. Hurry up March 6th. Although I shouldn't play, too many deadlines. The kinect yelling weapon changes and what not is funny... unless you're on the phone while someone else is playing.

557 Good Morning ONT Morons.  No surprises on "most well liked States".  Why should MS not be hated? After all, the MFM has spent decades demonizing it in news and movies.

These kinds of polls are worthless. If you look at population growth, like the rest of the South, MS has enjoyed a healthy population growth. Polls may say one thing, but people voting with their feet say something entirely different.

560 Amen, Vic. Good morning to you.

Posted by: veeka oot seeg at February 28, 2012 01:36 AM (sqVOl)

561 How can that be? If you like Colorado, Idaho and Montana, why would you dislike Utah? I can't think of any reason other than anti-Mormon bias.
--------------------------------

As I said in the MS post, the MFM demonizes some States. Utah is a religious State, yes, but it is not anti-Morman bias. It is the anti-religion bias of the MFM.

566 Good news: Afghan traitors continue to accidentally set off their own bombs. Do you still get rewarded in paradise when you only succeeded in killing yourself and your friends? How embarrassing to die like one of Ayers old GFs.

567 Morning all.

Beanervt its actually kind of warm here this morning compared to the past several days. It is right at 50° right now and that will be close to the low.

Hope everyone had a better day than me yesterday.  Went to The City yesterdayfor the first of a series of doctor's appointments for my wife. Damn what some shitty damn coordination. Left the Dr's office about 4 pm to go to the hospital for "pre-registration". Had to wait for an hour to see a "clerk". Of course by then all but one had gone home for the day.

After fooling around with her for an hour in which she couldn't access our insurance info she sent us to a financial clerk who couldn't either. This despite the fact that she had been in the hospital there up until last Wednesday.

On top of all that the people from the lab had all gone home so they couldn't do any lab work.  My response was shouldn't need any as she had daily lab work up until last Wed. They asked if we could come back tomorrow (today).  I almost lost it.  I said I have to drive 53 damn miles to get here and you want me to come back tomorrow because you have rolled up the sidewalks at 4 pm.

They agreed to wait until Wed, she will be in surgery Thu. She has another appointment on Wed. And that is an entirely different story.

I hate dealing with hospital clerks and admin people. They do not give a damn for the people they are dealing with.

573 4 Need i point out that logic does not depend on 'belief?'

Socrates is a man.
All men are mortal.
Therefore Obama is a scoamf.

We believe in our premises and know that if true the conclusion will be true. But what evidence is there to support the premises? These we take on faith.

591 "Utah: It's all about the fact that booze is practically illegal."
"Tennessee has the second highest favorables. Hows that possible?"

Not so sure "it's all about" since popular Tennessee still has Blue Laws in place.

Regarding anti-Mormon sentiment, contrast Utah to Tennessee. Which Tennessee Church obliges 19-year-olds to spend 2 years as door to door salesmen to convert other Christians into Baptists?

On religiosity, attempts to control hypocritical dogma are burnt at the stake. No?

592 602 I've lived in for Utah 20 years (transplanted from another state). It sucks here. You'd hate it (Mormons and drinking and something). Don't come here!

(hopefully that will help keep the traffic congestion down a little)
