The Incredible Shrinking Papers
The death spiral of newspapers continues:
The decline in newspaper ad revenues to a 60-year low is amazing by itself, but the sharp decline in recent years is pretty stunning. Last year's ad revenues of about $21 billion were less than half of the $46 billion spent just four years ago in 2007, and less than one-third of the $64 billion spent in 2000.
Given this many papers have grasped at online readership as way to save themselves but have managed to screw that up as well.
One of the few papers that's succeeding online is the UK's Daily Mail who seem to have found a winning formula: Giving readers the kinds of stories they actually want to read - celebrity and crime news, stories about health and bikinis, and some sports and politics - along with lots of pictures and punchy titles. Basically everything that makes J-school graduates weep.
And not only are papers' revenues and readerships shrinking - but the papers themselves are getting physically smaller too. Here you can see a 2011 issue of the Los Angeles Times compared with the same paper in 1966.
Guys Beware: Today Is Leap Day
So if a moronette tries to get you alone tonight to 'talk' - be afraid sure to mention that your new anti-virals sure help the oozing:
But a century ago, proposals by women were not only acceptable, they were a common occurrence-at least on February 29th.The legend goes that St. Bridget of Ireland was frustrated that all the non-nun ladies in 5th century Ireland had to sit around waiting for proposals that might never come. She complained about it to St. Patrick who, probably impressed by Bridget's ability to turn her used bathwater into beer, finally proclaimed that women could have the chance to propose themselves once every four years on the leap day. This became known as "The Ladies' Privilege."
Shame of Britain: Man Drowns in 3 Ft of Water, 25 Emergency Workers Stand and Watch
This was Walpole Park in Gosport, Hampshire, on an overcast lunchtime last March when no fewer than 25 members of the emergency services, including a press officer, descended on a 3½ft-deep model boating lake minutes after Simon Burgess, 41, fell into the water when he suffered a seizure. But as an inquest heard last week, he lay floating face-down for more than half an hour while firemen, police and paramedics watched and did nothing. The reason? Even though they could all swim, the first fire crew to arrive hadn't been 'trained' to enter water higher than ankle-deep. Instead they waited for 'specialists' to arrive to retrieve his body. They had decided Mr Burgess must surely be dead because he had been in the water for ten minutes. When a policeman decided to go in anyway, he was ordered not to. A paramedic was also told not to enter the water because he didn't have the right 'protective' clothing and might be in breach of the Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations 1992.
Okay correlation ain't causation but the bloom may be coming off the pork sandwich:
This is not a message that will go over well in the bacon-loving paleo world, but it is what it is. Pork consumption strongly correlates with cirrhosis of the liver (even more so than alcohol consumption), liver cancer, and MS. Even though most pork has a high omega-6 polyunsaturated fat profile, Jaminet doesn't believe that's the whole story.Enter pathogens. Pigs have certain biological commonalities with humans, which make them a more dangerous vector for disease compared to other animals. For whatever reason, the types of viruses and bacteria that thrive in pigs also thrive in humans, and frequently jump from one to the other. And it's these pathogens, like Hepatitis E, that are contributing to liver disease and MS, argues Jaminet.
Jaminet's takeaway is to avoid pork products containing liver, intestine, and blood. Pork ribs or pork bellies may be a better choice. Just be sure to wash and cook them thoroughly
What The Sharp Dressed Army Officer Was Wearing in 1941
Weapons and tactics weren't the only things that evolved over the war.
The World's Most Dangerous Golf Course
Yep the Korean DMZ has its own golf course.
Panmunjom's one and only hole is a 192 yard par three with an AstroTurf putting green, a gun tower, and LIVE MINE FIELDS in the rough! The hole is surrounded by the mine fields on three sides and it's been reported that at least one mine has exploded due to a big slice off the tee.The hole was build to provide a bit of recreation for the 50 soldiers stationed there. Camp Bonifas (formerly Camp Kitty Hawk) was named in honor of U.S. Army Captain Arthur Bonifas after he and 1st LT Mark Barrett were murdered in the axe murder incident of 1976. Camp Bonifas is the UN's Joint Security Area that keeps an eye on the Armistice Agreement of 1953 made between the North and South.
"We Will Rock You" Bagpipe Style
Pretty damn awesome. But I wouldn't advise letting this guy know where your post-apocalyptic gas refinery is located.
Don't seem very prepared for non-scripted doomsdays:
Very few people had thought their preparations through as well as they thought they had. One family had literally tons of food put by, but all in one location. One prepper in Houston planned to escape to Mexico (?!?!?), but didn't have enough gas to get there. Some didn't take practical steps to ensure their safety. It isn't difficult for someone to latch on to an idea or plan, but getting them to adapt is an entirely different matter. It is the ability to read changing conditions and adapt to them that often separates the survivors of a disaster from those that become victims.Unsurprisingly, quite a few of the preppers were very resistant to suggestions from the experts. If disaster strikes, and scenarios don't unfold precisely the way they have envisioned, then these people, despite all their preparations and supplies, are little more than delayed victims.
Well I suspect that for many people on the show disaster prepping is more a Walter Mitty-eque fantasy than serious planning. Having multiple options and adaptability is the real survival trait.

A bit of airship information that ties in nicely with a conservative site, in honor of the promenade deck photograph.
After WWI Great Britain embarked on a project to have two competing airships, one privately designed and built, and the other a government designed and sponsored effort.
The R-100 built by Vickers made a transatlantic crossing to Canada, while the government built R-101 crashed and burned on its maiden voyage in France. It had numerous loading and design problems.
The R-100 design team included Sir Barnes Wallis who designed the Wellington bomber and Neville Shute, the author of the apocalyptic novel, "On the Beach".
Yeah, I know......too much information.

Here's what I'd like to see for "Survivor", in order to make me (and the rest of the damned world) watch: 12 people are dropped onto an island with only what they can carry, and left to fend for themselves. On the beach is a tent with A/C, internet, and wonderful foods and medecine. Three shifts of well-fed and cared for cameramen capture every moment, but get to retreat to the well-stocked camp after their shift is done. The contestants' options are two - either continue to live off the land, as a group or individually, or enter the tent and lose. True survival would ensue, with the potential of a live-action "Lord of the Flies" remake. I'd never miss an episode.

Gneisenau
I read a book on Waterloo recently, in which there was the claim that Gneisenau acting like a total dick and slowing the Prussian Army's link-up with Wellington actually turned out to be a blessing in disguise. If the Prussians had arrived earlier, Napoleon would have realized he was outmatched, and made an orderly withdrawal, to fight again under more auspicious (for him) circumstances.

Lol.. well, just in case I prepared a speech for the UN, something I would do on day one of the SOS Presidency:
"Mr. President, Mr. Secretary General, fellow delegates, ladies and gentlemen: It is a great honor for me to be here today. My message for you today is a simple one, one that is long overdue, one that will make our world a much better place for future generations.
My message, honored delegates, is this. Get the fuck out. Allow me to reiterate, for those of you sitting in the back, so that there are no misunderstandings. Yes, I said get the fuck out. Pack your shit, and go home. As your landlord, we are informing you your lease is now at an end, you are no longer welcome, and we expect you to vacate immediately.
No longer will the United States continue to host, support, or fund this completely corrupt and totally useless organization. If you wish to continue to have a UN, feel free to host it in one of your own countries, however be advised we will not participate. I think anyone who has been here longer than a week is already well aware that it is a complete and total waste of time, energy, effort and money.
While I could spend hours, days, perhaps even weeks with a huge laundry list of reasons why the UN no longer deserves our support or participation, I think nothing sums it up more clearly than to point to April of 2011, when Syria became a member of the UN Council on Human Rights.
To claim that this body has any "moral" authority at this stage simply strains credulity. As such you may no longer count on one thin dime of support from the United States, I'll give you a few days to pack, shred any documents you think will save you from later prosecution, and then we'll be shutting out the lights and locking the doors. Please try to avoid allowing the door to hit you in the ass on the way out.
For those of you who have spent years thumbing your noise at, trying to embarrass or generally being a royal pain in the ass to the United States, feel free to drop by your governments accounting office when you do return home and tell them how much they will receiving in US Foreign Aid next year. It's an easy number to remember. It's zero. If private US companies or some of our generous civilians want to try and aid the poor of your country I wish them well, however it will no longer be the business of the United States government to fund unfriendly governments of any sort.
Please feel free to gather in Geneva, or Paris, or anywhere else you wish. Feel free to decry our actions, call us names, whatever you wish. Honestly we could give a shit less. In it's entire recorded history the UN has never performed a single useful action and almost always causes more problems than it solves. It is the policy of this government that we will no longer subsidize such abject failure and stupidity. Now, if you "honored persons" will excuse me, I have to return to the Oval Office, so that I can kill this monstrosity called Obama Care and fire a bunch of czars, hopefully in time to save my beloved country from complete bankruptcy."
Lol.. ya, not getting elected.. but, fun to think about nonetheless.. lol - but of course then I realized, hell, I already have two write in votes. All I need is one more and I'll have the same poll numbers as Newt.. lol..

Polliwog, it is a website for brain training (the hook to get you to use it) they have been advertising on television and their ads have popped up on various websites lately.
It's actually not bad from a brain training point of view, you know stuff like recall. And, its been used in schools and also for the elderly and others who have brain issues.
But, it is also used as a way for neural scientists to do experiments on brain function etc. you can type lumosity and go to their website and they have a whole paper on it.

Okay, Alton. The flattie and trans is over at the shop, all resealed and painted up. Ready to go back in. New clutch and resurfaced flywheel, too. After the snow event is done, then installation takes place. Following, the body is nearly ready for final blocking prior to paint. Same green color as original, and the interior set should be here after paintwork.
And now I AM going to bed.

Polliwog, I think part of it from the scientists' perspective is that they have a pool of about 1 million test subjects now plus they can more easily follow things over time etc.
I suspect that the money is really going to the tech guys, since it is a company, but still it does stick in my craw a bit to pay for being experimented on.

It's a dream, dude. A thought experiment on what would be more entertaining than the current "Survivor", and which would more accurately reflect the hardships and decisions required to survive on one's own in a harsh or foreign environment. Think of it as "Survivorman" or that Bear Grylls show, only real. It would be interesting, if it weren't totally impossible. You're pissing out the window at something you chose not to understand.
- You'd have to incorporate outside the US in a country that doesn't extricate.
Again, consider it a thought experiment. It's not a possibility in any real sense, just my idea of what could be compelling TV. It's no more dystopian than "The Running Man", at least. Fantasy, how the fuck does it work?
- Please tell me your a Santorum fan.
Please explain WTF that means. I don't like Ricky at all, but I cannot see, for the life of me, how that would have any bearing whatsoever, unless you're trying to impose some kind of assumed intellectual superiority over me, by connecting my admittedly unworkable fantasy of what "Survivor" could be by painting me as some kind of idiot, which I assume is what "Santorum supporter" meant in proxy.

Get the product right and itÂ’s still possible to sell a newspaper or two:
Rupert Murdoch has confirmed on Twitter that the first Sunday edition of the Sun sold 3.26m copies – the biggest sale of a UK newspaper for four years.
“Amazing! The Sun confirmed sale of 3.260,000 copies yesterday,” he tweeted at his official @rupertmurdoch account. “Thanks all readers and advertisers. Sorry if sold out – more next time”.
The 3.26m has not been bettered on a Sunday since the SunÂ’s now closed sister title News of the World sold 3.37m copies in February 2007. The last time the News of the World equalled 3.26m was in January 2008, according to official figures from the Audit Bureau of Circulations.
Sales of rival Sunday tabloids were down by 15-30 per cent, according to early figures.
UPDATE. The biggest-selling paper in four years, but the ABCÂ’s Lisa Millar found two people who didnÂ’t buy it. [Andy: the Aussie BBC that is not the US MFM network.]

Well, I can give you a super long winded technical explanation, or the basic version. I suggest the basic version:
You push the stick thingy right, and the game deally goes right, you push it left it goes left, and so on.
Troubleshooting steps: If it don't work, try reinstalling the driver. Then try unplugging it and plugging it back in preferably in a different port, if it still don't work, get a new one.
I can actually give you the long winded electro-mechnical explanation of how most of them work too, but trust me, the above will pretty much cover it in 99.99% of all known situations.

Yup.. they also ignore the fact that hundreds of UN peacekeepers have been accused of rape and all manner of corruption in the areas of the world where they are supposedly "keeping the peace", mostly apparently this involves shaking down the local populace for what little they might have left of value and forcing women into sexual slavery.
"Okay, it isn't like Syria is gunning people down in the streets. Oh, wait, yes they are."
Sad thing is? They are not even bothering to go house to house, you know, and only killing the adults, or just males, etc. Nope, nothing anywhere near that discriminate. They just start lobbing artillery shells into neighborhoods and slaughtering men, women, children alike.

My take on it is, "They all suck - and since by the time my state's primary rolls around this thing will have been decided already, it always is - so I'll do what I always do, hold my nose, pull the lever for whatever of these idiots gets the nomination. I'll most likely have to throw up afterwards, just like I did last time.. but anything is better than Obama."
ugh.. wait.. past my bedtime.. must --- not --- get -- sucked --- back --- in...
Lol...
Seriously though, gotta go, however, note to the "Big blog", should you wish to buy me too my opinion is for sale, I could use the extra cash. I'd like to be able to hit McDonald's a few more times before it's closed and I'm shipped off to a re-education camp, so give me a jingle, we'll talk.. lol..

It's something of an in-joke by people who know me that I'm inclined to PG rated films....it's just that there is so much in the real world that is violent, grotesque, or horrifying, that I don't really feel like paying money to know of more. Besides, I don't want to dull my reactions to the real thing so I start doing idiotic and morally dangerous stuff like advocating Democrat anti-human policies.
But the Godfather series (at least I and II) is Art -- with the capital 'A'. Every bit of it is necessary to the whole, and you can watch it time and time again and get more from it. It shows the nobility possible within vice, and corruption of virtue. I'd heartily recommend seeing it on video, as it's generally chopped into crap by commercial breaks and censorship when it's broadcast.

The other half of it was toning up, and she found that she could con me into hiking through some local parks.....so it hardly qualifies as a weekend if we don't have at least a 200' vertical climb under our belts. It's prettier and more relaxing than running bleachers or doing stairs, but has a similar effect.
Thing is, I'm doing the same hikes she is, but I'm not losing weight. I wonder how that works (opens beer).

Mock away -- I was putting that out as a minimum. Most of our hikes have more -- and, of course, there's the distance. But the minimum is the equivalent of going up and down 20 stories of stairs and us 50-year-old chairjockeys aren't doing any marathons.

Intellectually, most of it is straightforward. I find it quite amusing that the BH's "classes" are mainly reinforcing things that I've been trying to tell her for two decades. Most of the problems come in the motivational side -- which is where the hiking has really been good on the exercise front.
We used to SCUBA, and that kept things on track for a while, but we had an unscheduled two-week extension of our Hawaiian holiday where we got to do an extended tour of the Kuakini hyperbaric facility, back in '96.....

The BH has had a weekly gym night for a while, but I'm not much of a gym person (why, oh why, hasn't anyone done a nice VR non-gym gym?). So a couple of years back we "discovered" the county parks here had some lovely forest-y ones with shady hiking. And they have annual parking passes. So we go off to the county parks and hike up the mountains nearly every weekend.

Where are you at?
You can get Twinings in high-end grocery stores around here -- Drager's and Andronico's -- and you can get Taylors of Harrogate (better!) in a couple of ethnic markets. If you do tea daily, Indian grocery stores have a surprising selection of tasty teas that are quite inexpensive.

I am going to guess exercise, since I live in a fairly swanky city (though I live in a run down section of it) but I can't say for sure.
I love to dance, and I am not above giving the man a show, but I have to draw the line at the pole. I am not sure why, it just seems beyond tacky.

No benefit that I can think of. The best way I can say it is they are rattle traps. The fingerboard radius is improved, but its still hard to run lower action on them without certain amounts of buzzing, and the string pull is stiffer. You can do more with the flatter fingerboard radius of the gibsons. On the other hand strats have a tone that is distinct and nothing else sounds like them. I do have one strat here that plays pretty exceptional, and I can't figure out why, it defies logic. Its set up the same as my other ones.

Tube amps are a must, period. Nothing sounds like them. As far as slide goes, I know as much about slide as Julius Caesar knew about our space program. I couldn't tell you. Gibsons have a 24 3/4" scale, fenders are 25 1/2. I don't know whats better for slide.

yeah thats about right. The wood is everything, but then you got the fretjobs and actual build quality too, basically the human element. I have build pairs of classical guitars from the same frigging planks of wood. I cut the backs, sides, and tops from the same billets, sliced off next to each other, and the finished guitars still had slight differences in tone. Its very hard to get 2 identical guitars in any given batch.

yeah see thats what I don't know. Are you better off with 7 1/4" fender radius or the flatter 12" radius of a gibson. I don't play slide so I have no clue. Is it better to have almost a violin effect of the fender radius where each string almost has its own height, or do you want the strings closer to an even plane. I don't know.

Print Newspapers. Hah! At one time or another I have subscribed to everyone of them in this area of the State. I dropped the first one because I was living in an apartment and others thought my paper belonged to them. At the time I wasn't too offended by the bias. I dropped the second one because it got so outrageous I couldn't stomach it any more. With my cancellation I told them if I wanted a Democrat Promo rag I would contribute the money to that party and get their news letters.
And the last one was a bi-weekly local rag which was just fine until the original founding editor retired and sold it to the McClatchy group. It went immediately from a small Southern town conservative paper to a Democrat PR rag. I cancelled it shortly thereafter.
All my magazine subscriptions went the same way. When Consumer Reports became more concerned with how "green" some POS was vs how well it worked they went into the shitter. When Discover caught the AGW fraud I dumped them. I will not mention Time, Newsweek, and USA Today.
On the drowning due to bureaucratic shit score we had almost the same shit happen in CA a few months ago. It is insane.

=========
I quit in the early 90's for several reasons. 1) I came to realize that they were only interested in my glands and not my mind. One person worded it this way, "if they have the choice between shedding light and applying heat they will apply heat every time." It turns out that if I don't start my day with someone deliberately trying to piss me off, I spend a lot less time pissed off.
2) in my job, I know something about 1%-2% of the stuff that hits the paper long before it hits the paper. The stories they would write would be unrecognizable compared to the truth if you knew the truth. Oddly enough, all the facts would be actually true, but they are assembled in such a dumbshit way that they stop having any real relationship to the truth. So, it finally occurred to me, "If what I know about is some grossly misunderstood by the folks writing the paper, why in hell should I let them have so much control over my opinion about the other 98-99%? That's just dumb on my part."
3) Their politics just suck. Complete Slavery party worship at the cost of all other things. After a while I could not in good conscience continue to give my quarter to such assholes. They might be rich without me, but they are going to get all their money from some other than me. Fuck 'em. And when enough people decide the same thing, they will be flat broke and it serves the fuckers right.

But that is not all. The 30 miles is intended to give you time to load up and get out to an alternate location. Personally I want to go Galt and move to WY which satisfies two criteria in one action. But alas, it is not to be because can not get wifey to agree. I do not live within 30 miles of a large urban area but the county I live in is small area-wise and has 70,000 people, so it is just as bad.
