Damn. I'm out of turkey already. Lingerie Football

Lingerie League Goes Legit. Looks to be more popular overseas than the NFL in terms of teams and leagues.

BusinessWeek recently called them the “fastest growing sports league in the United States.” The U.S. league is taking the fall off, scheduled to come back in the spring, as Mortaza and company focus on starting the Canadian version. (The video of Nikki Johnson's shoulder-plow, uploaded in September, is the first viral sensation for the new league.) An Australian-based export is going through the final planning stages after the LFL's first-ever All Star Game, held in Sydney last May, drew 18,000 fans. 2014 will see the start of an LFL Europe league, with teams in the U.K., Germany and Ireland. When that happens, the LFL will be playing year-round... somewhere.

“The ultimate goal is to be playing across the world,” says Mortaza, “and to make a serious case to turn this into, believe it not, an Olympic sport.”

An Olympic sport? Oh my. Does that mean Pole Dancing has a chance too?

War & Relationships

Heh. This was sent in from Genghis. The 7 Types Of Failed Relationship Understood Via U.S. Wars. I wonder what the War On Terror would fit?

You're Doing It Wrong

Psychopath Challenge

Take The Psychopath Challenge. I scored 19 out of 33. No idea what that means. Partially psycho?

Food Coma

Evidently even Aristotle Had Thoughts On The Thanksgiving Food Coma. OK, not really Thanksgiving but on having a really big meal.

Food coma may seem a recent phenomenon -- one brought on by the age of never-ending buffets and fast food -- but it didn't escape the observant gaze of the Greek philosopher Aristotle, who theorized, "...while food is being digested, vapors rise from the stomach because of their higher temperature and collect in the head. As the brain cools, the vapors condense, flow downward and then cool the heart, which causes sleep." The more food is consumed, the greater the effect.

OK, he's a bit wrong there. Here's what really happens.
When mounds of food are consumed, activity of the parasympathetic nervous system -- the system responsible for the body's "resting" activities -- increases, resulting in a state of low energy and a desire to relax. Additionally, the consumption of carbohydrates -- like potatoes, stuffing, cranberries, bread, etc. -- causes insulin levels to rise in order to mitigate blood glucose levels. Concurrently, muscles take in various amino acids, except for one called tryptophan. With the ratio of tryptophan elevated in the blood stream, the amino acid has an easier time getting into the brain. Once there, tryptophan is converted to serotonin, which is then converted to melatonin. Elevated levels of these two hormones make us very, very sleepy.

Sci-Fi Montage

Dessert Idea

Oh man I need to try this. Bacon Bourbon Ice Cream Recipe.

1 cup of whole milk
3 cups of heavy cream
¾ cup of sugar
4 egg yolks
1lb. of bacon
Brown sugar
Maple syrup or a bourbon whiskey. (Manbque prefers Makers Mark)

4 American Energy Independence via The 22nd Amernment http://politicalhat.com/?p=626 A recent study is suggesting that the United States may become energy independent within a couple of decades. This would be due, to a large degree, on improvements on drilling technology such as horizontal drilling and “fracking” of shale. The United State is on the path to not only be self-sufficient in oil, but even a net exporter of liquefied natural gas. The job-creating potential of oil and gas extraction has been shown in North Dakota, and may help lift poverty stricken areas from their morass. This is a turnaround from the 1970's when America was threatened by the specter of “peak oil” and a stranglehold by OPEC. But this turnaround is contingent on companies, large oil companies and small-time wildcat drillers alike, being allowed to harness this cheap and abundant energy. Under the presidency of Barack Obama, this presumption is doubtful. Obama has not only subsidized crony “Green energy” companies, but has been attacking drilling in the United States. Thankfully, this absurd policy will not last forever. No matter how popular Obama is with his cult of personality, he is still limited to a total of two terms thanks to the 22nd amendment, which reads, in part: “No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once.” While energy independence and the economic prosperity that goes along with it will happen after Obama, that four year delay is four years of prosperity denied.

96 Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu agreed to a ceasefire for halting the eight-day Israeli Gaza operation Wednesday night, Nov. 21, after President Barack Obama personally pledged to start deploying US troops in Egyptian Sinai next week, debkafile reports.

The conversation, which finally tipped the scales for a ceasefire, took place on a secure line Wednesday morning, just hours before it was announced in Cairo. The US and Israeli leaders spoke at around the time that a terrorist was blowing up a Tel Aviv bus, injuring 27 people.

Obama's pledge addressed Israel's most pressing demand in every negotiating forum on Gaza: Operation Pillar of Cloud's main goal was a total stoppage of the flow of Iranian arms and missiles to the Gaza Strip. They were smuggled in from Sudan and Libya through southern Egypt and Sinai. Hostilities would continue, said the prime minister, until this object was achieved.

Earlier, US officials tried unsuccessfully to persuade Israel to accept Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi's personal guarantee to start launching effective operations against the smugglers before the end of the month. The trio running Israel's Gaza campaign, Netanyahu, Defense Minister Ehud Barak and Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman, were willing to take Morsi at his word, except that Israeli security and intelligence chiefs assured them that Egypt has nothing near the security and intelligence capabilities necessary for conducting such operations.

all R's voted no, EXCEPT:

in other words, the well-known aisle-crossing RINOs in the first place

so while I don't think the R's have been particularly spine-worthy lately, it's also not true that they ALL just voted yes on the Wise Latina

Basically, do what the left has done on a state and international level for, well, ever.

Once again for the myth-proffering assholes:

"Turkey does have tryptophan. But all meat has tryptophan at comparable levels. Cheddar cheese, gram for gram, has more. While cheddar isn't the most exciting cheese in the cheese cellar, no one connects it with sleep. Turkey gets singled out for no other reason than being eaten during the biggest meal of the year."

215 Re: Akin & Mourdock, yes Akin was an ass for not stepping down and Mourdock was an idiot for not having a response after Akin's. Me? I was shocked at how the Medicare attacks didn't take hold. I was really expecting them to and they just didn't. All of Obama's attacks were war on women stuff and God bless American idiots, it worked.

On the other hand, people want to be ruled over by wise (latina) judges.  They really do. In Iowa, one of the gay marriage judges was up for retention and was, in fact, retained. (Three of the seven were kicked out in 2010.) The arguments on the pro-side were pretty sick for a free-born people in a republic: Our judicial system, which includes retention votes, is great, so don't vote out the judge because...whatever.

They think there are brilliant people. Geniuses. Superbrains who can solve all of our problems if we'd just give them the power they seek.

I've been thinking a lot about this, especially with the Asian-American vote going Dem. What is happening are the wages of the victim society. Everybody feels (or wants to feel) that they are victims of some shadowy force or are disaffected by society.

We know how it is on the Left, of course. OWS thinks Wall Street runs the world. Dems think fundamentalist Christians have their Christiany mitts all over society (when the GOP nominates a Mormon and a Catholic). In fact, fundies are scary mostly because they have no power at all and it's all about what they might do.

But fundamentalists think "the GOP" or "the RINOs" are out to get them. Ditto libertarians.

In the Age of Obama, he marshals the disaffected, either as soldiers for the Democrat party or to break the coalition of the Republicans. Everybody has a resentment that can be exploited.

Most of the sanctions involved forfeiting of wins, and you know being unable to play in a bowl game and in the Big Ten Championship game.  One of the games they forfeited was the bowl game against Arkansas so they still have not techincally beaten an SEC game in a bowl game.

279 262 I mean look at the death of Princess Diana in 1997 and the orgy of public grief that followed. It was like, she gets killed in a car crash, but the British people saw themselves as the victims, and wallowed in it for a week.
Posted by: Jones in CO at November 24, 2012 11:49 PM

I remember reading message boards, it wasn't just the Brits who were behaving as if they wanted to jump into the casket with her. There were emotionally stunted idiots who said it was worse than their own mother dying.

As great a movie as "The Queen" is, it's painful to actually have that stomach turning "public grief" brought out of my repressed memories

282 Amish, You are now the official AOS Recorder of Doom. Nice take.

Well, I'm not so pessimistic. Cultural stuff can be fixed, especially when it's so shallow.  This isn't Israeli/Palestinian stuff here.  Obama is shockingly good at this.  I thought he'd explode in rage at some point, but he's kept himself largely in check and his handlers have kept him on the leash.

And he focuses peoples' resentments pretty well. Besides, revenge doesn't need results, revenge doesn't need to make your life better. Revenge means that you wish that the genie would kill your neighbor's cow rather than give you a healthy one.

So a failed presidency and a failed economy doesn't matter.

But it will.  They don't have to prop up the lame duck anymore and the middle-to-upper-middle class who discover that their health care is far more expensive and far lower quality. Their taxes will go up. They'll still be working twice as hard because the company can't grow or the agency has to downsize or the university has to keep cutting. Their smug satisfaction at sticking it to the fundies will be left with the sinking feeling that the Democrat party is no longer a party that will pull its nutjobs back from the brink.

The modern Democrat party has no interest in governing anymore. They are a permanent opposition against a ruling class that does not exist.

Ah, but then we get to shoot the assholes when they cross that line. I took an oath in 1980 and have not renounced it since:

I, (NAME), do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the LAWFUL orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God.

Roughly 1/3 of the military voted for Obama, and 2/3 against him. If you figure that 1/3 will back him with no questions asked, what will the other 2/3s do. Will all of them stand up? Will 17% decide to follow their superiors orders because of perceived threats from their higher ups? If they do, then half of the military supports, the other half doesn't. At that point the military is taken out of the equation, and then it comes down to the federal government and the state governments. What do they do. The Feds back Obama, the majority of states don't.

I understand that you take your oath seriously, but how many others really take it seriously? How many would crumble under pressure from superiors? Would Obama get a bunch of his followers to join his "private" army? Would be dictators always find a way to gain more power.

It used to be that scholarships were gutted and it took years to recover from that.

Per NCAA rules you have a maximum of 26/ year, if they are cut 4 5 or 6/ year for 3 years it shows up later. Check out the number of seniors on a team from the 26. With the failures, transfers, kicked out of school, the ones there who peaked in high school, those scholarship losses hurt. They start showing up in the following years, so yes that is a pretty hefty penalty.

My daughter is really into eating hot dogs at the moment. Guess what? Both of the brands we like we're made by Hostess! My wife was distraught. Beside herself. "This is the only brand I've ever eaten since I was a child!" She wailed. My daughter geared up when I showed her the new hot dog buns. I said to Mrs. North, "this is the unions saying fuck you." "I know..." She said. I said, "this is why we vote. This is how it matters. This is a little thing that the left fucked up for us. It won't be the last thing. And by God I won't let them if I can help it." She wrinkled her nose. But she made the connection. Maybe she will vote in 2014, after swearing off voting last week. I'll keep after her.

No, that is when you learned it.

i'm sorry, katya

I honestly cannot see how it is hard because it has always come fairly easily for me.

I guess it starts with not having fear.  They are just numbers and letters.  They aren't going to leap off the paper and strangle me.

Then it comes with knowing the basic rules - of algebra, trig, calculus, whatever.

Then it comes with practicing them, a lot, with applications that you actually care about.  Practice for the sake of practice is dull.  Practice for the sake of solving a chemistry problem, if you like chemistry (like me), is fun.

Then you start to see some patterns and can see where a solution to a problem "ought to go".  You can tell just by looking at an equation if it "looks wrong" or not.  Dimensional analysis really helps here.  You can see if the solution is nonsense or not by looking at limits.

Then you can start to get an idea of what an equation is really trying to tell you, beyond the symbols and numbers.  It's trying to tell a story of what real physical processes are taking place.  That is the real elegance and power of it all, IMO.

391 Dude,

Asura's Wrath was among the 13 I got before the pickings started getting thin.

The number of items I'd already found for comparable prices in recent months accounted for more of the misses than the items that sold out, so I'm happy. I was tempted by Batman: AC but I was already holding out for the GOTY version, and now I'm holding out for the Wii U version that has a few more bits. Similarly for L.A. Noire. I'm waiting for the Complete with Move support version on the PS3 to turn up cheap.

I know it will be a good wait for Wii U launch titles to get really cheap, so I'm focusing on all the Wii stuff that had never been quite enough to get me to buy the hardware. The number of must-have Wii titles by my measure is less than two dozen and I already have about half.

It's a wasteful indulgence, especially now that all my nieces and nephews are grown and live far away. But fairly cheap compared to what many people I know spend on their hobbies.

ever been in a situation where you refused to brown-nose a brown-noser?  remember how shocked and mad they were when you wouldn't do it?

math is just all the ways different people have invented to count faster and in fancier ways.

you probably understand all the concepts just fine, but might get lost in the various symbologies and jargon.  That happens a lot when no one tells you anything aside for the steps-- such as -- who invented it, and why they needed it -- or even just one useful purpose for the particular bit you are studying.

Also, it certainly helps if people will remember to tell you when you already know something and they are just showing you an alternate way to do the same basic thing.

422 Zakn,

I wouldn't have considered getting the Wii U for at least a year and at least one price drop but two things pushed me over. First, having a bunch of rewards certificates at TRU that were going to start expiring soon but nothing of interest in their BF ad. So my cost of entry was about a third less than normal. (My soon to end contract job had me racking up a LOT of well compensated mileage and the gas was being bought with a TRU credit card with a 1% kickback.)

Second, I never had the Wii, so there was a fair backlog of games from that I wanted that are now very cheap or soon will be.

But unless you are very attached tot he Nintendo franchises or just a hobbyist like me, there isn't much yet to say "you must get this platform."

I expect I'll get a Vita someday but it may be posthumously. Dead platforms can be plenty of fun if the price is right. Everything is a known quantity. For instance, I had no regrets in buying the Nintendo virtual Boy after it was dead. The unit in a nice carrying case with the full software library was about $40, as clearance rental units from Blockbuster. I bought several more sets for gifts.

Either Sony will turn things around and make the Vita worth $150, or it will die before the next holiday season and you'll be able to get the hardware and games for trivial amounts.

I'll hold out for the $10 give or take price. In 30 years of game shopping there hasn't been a single item that didn't eventually turn up for the right price. In all that time I've paid MSRP on a game fewer than two dozen times and much of that was during a period of suicidal depression where I didn't care if I didn't have enough money left for food. I recall the first Breath of Fire was one of those.

469 385 Big problem at the Jake house.

FIL uses a 16 inch chain saw(which I did not know about until just now). has worn out 3. He cuts wood to heat home in midwest, approx 8 cords per year.

Me, so and so wants a bigger chainsaw, he is getting rid of his 16 inch and wants a 20inch.

FIL, why?

Me, well 16 inch chain saws are't very manly, as a kid my pops said run the biggest saw you could. so I got two 24 inch saws in the garage. which both are all wore out since my pops and I ran the shit out of them

me, should stop talking
FIL, gots nothing to say

any help here?

Posted by: Jake in ID at November 25, 2012 12:41 AM (2CiZb)

Well, I think you already touched on it, but serious chainsaws can be equipped with bars of various lengths. No point swinging a 24-inch bar if the biggest log you will be bucking is twelve inches. A 16" bar will have less friction to waste horsepower, and less weight to tire your arms.

I wish I could say "yes".  but I detect a lack of entrepreneurialist spirit among the yoots of today.  I suspect instead that we will have people working a part-time job without benefits and then living on gov't bennies to provide for everything else like health insurance.  which was the plan of ObamaCare all along.

I'd have to dig it out to see but it was essentially everything that had shipped before NOA pulled the plug. 14 titles according to Wikipedia. I had a Japanese import that a friend who traveled there often gave me but it was largely unplayable without translation. Might have been the Gundam strategy game. The system bombed so badly they actually had more games well along in development than were released. The cost of ROM would have magnified the disaster if they'd manufactured the games that were ready to go.

When they had the first public demo at E3 I had a pretty funny encounter with some NOA execs. I asked them if they weren't afraid of having another incident like the Pokemon seizures of a very small number of children that turned into a mass hysteria incident with thousands showing up in ERs for no good reason.

They just stared and one asked what I meant. I elaborated by asking if any of them had seen 'The Andromeda Strain.' More blank stares and then one of them got a dire 'Oh shit!' expression on his face. "Does that really happen?" They all rushed off to have a little emergency meeting.

It was great fun. Probably the most fun anyone ever had with the VB once the novelty had passed. Still, it could have worked out better. Nintendo forgot a simple rule that had served them well. You have to either launch cheap or launch with a must-have game. Preferably both. The Virtual Boy had neither virtue at $199. At $120 to $150 the novelty would have sustained things much longer until a killer game appeared. Ideally, if it had launched at $150 with a really good new Mario entry, it would be remembered very differently. And there would have been a lot more seizures.

Then you can start to get an idea of what an equation is really trying to tell you, beyond the symbols and numbers. It's trying to tell a story of what real physical processes are taking place. That is the real elegance and power of it all, IMO.

GameBoy was replaced by the more compact with better screen Gameboy Pocket.

GameBoy Pocket gave way to the GameBoy Color, whose primary virtue should be obvious.

GameBoy Color was replaced by GameBoy Advance, which could have been called the GameBoy A Hell of a Lot More Color, but it also moved the CPU from 8-bit Z-80 to 32-bit ARM.

GameBoy Advance was replaced by the GameBoy Advance SP, which gave the screen a badly needed backlight, and offered a rechargeable battery as standard.

The GameBoy ended there, with the handheld duties at Nintendo taken up by the DS. This machine could run all of the GBA library (but not the earlier GB and GBC stuff due to voltage differences in the cartridges) but introduced a bunch of major new features for new native games. Two screens, one with touch input, a microphone, etc.

The DS line went through some revisions since 2004, getting more compact, and optionally much bigger, adding cameras and an SD card slot to support download purchases.

The current handheld is the 3DS, featuring, as one might guess from the name, a true 3D display on the upper screen. It may be the last big dedicated handheld game system, in light of the market being consumed by smartphones with strong gaming feature, albeit often less than satisfactory input options.

I can actually say I was present for the US unveiling of almost all of those machines. 519 The DSiXL ha resolution problems but native games on the 3DSXL look fine to me. Though if Nintendo does another handheld platform of their own the resolution will need to at least double just to be competitive with current low end smartphones. The 3D is problematic because it doubles the horizontal resolution to get the effect of half the resolution in 3D.

Still, in three years, a 1080p phablet sized clamshell 3DS successor for $199 (assuming inflation hasn't gone berserk) should be doable. The question is what the market will be for such an item that isn't a phone. Perhaps Nintendo should revive to VOIP plan they had for the DS in its early days. If Microsoft hasn't produced a branded portable gaming device by then they'd probably be happy to give Nintendo a Skype license. It wouldn't cost them anything and it would make them look good if the DoJ comes sniffing around.

Yes but what form might the phone take? They may decide they have a gap in the lineup for Xbox games and services, and believe they can succeed where both Nokia and Sony failed. That first Nokia was so amazingly bad it hardly bear mentioning but it was the first smartphone with a strong gaming orientation.

It still amazes me to this day that you had to pull the battery to expose the game card slot. How do they go to full production without every tester telling them it was an utter deal breaker.

533 That wasn't my best idea ever. I started a fire in the fireplace but the wind is wrong, I'm getting a draft down the chimney instead of up, so I have the flue closed down a little more than halfway and a fan blowing into the fireplace to force the air up the chimney instead of down. I have a house full of smoke and the windows open to clear it, thus negating the entire reason to have a fire in the first darn place.

538 I was just testing the computer speakers I bought recently. I went for years with just the tiny internal speaker that came with the computer. I watched DVDs, and listened to music on iTunes and YouTube, and so forth. All the while I thought about getting a set of external speakers but kept putting it off. Finally, last month I bought a pair of stereo speakers with a subwoofer. They're great. But I've been used to the low volume of the internal speaker, so I only turned up the new speakers a little. Just now I decided to give them a workout. I listened to the mono version of "Visions of Johanna". The sound level was almost more than I could stand. But the music sounded terrific. And I only had them turned halfway up. These are great speakers!

561 "Although Salt is pretty close to eternal... look in the cabinet. You'll see an expiration date on your salt box." Salt will draw moisture and cake over time, especially in one of those cheap-ass cardboard containers. Table salt has anti-caking gunk in it, but that can only do so much. It'll still be fine to use, just not as convenient. The potassium iodide has nothing to do with it. It's just as "eternal" as sodium chloride. If you're worried about it, buy kosher salt in bulk and repack it in a sealed, air and moisture-tight container. Be careful about rock salt. Some of the stuff that's intended to be used as ice melt has other chemicals in it.

Posted by: EveryOtherGuyInBangorME at November 25, 2012 03:05 AM (HQ6oy)

562 P.S. Pickling salt is another good source of bulk, food-grade salt.

Posted by: Infidel at November 25, 2012 03:12 AM (6gXNv)

564 The potassium iodide has nothing to do with it. It's just as "eternal" as sodium chloride.

Well it depends on what it meant by the term "eternal".

If it is meant that potassium iodide will undergo transformations due to moisture in the air just like sodium chloride, then yes.

However, potassium iodide will actually decompose over time, sodium chloride won't.  So that is a difference.

Posted by: EveryOtherGuyInBangorME at November 25, 2012 03:30 AM (HQ6oy)

568 http://hps.org/publicinformation/ate/q7000.html "studies over many years have confirmed that none of the components of KI tablets, including the active ingredient, has any significant potential for chemical degradation or interaction with other components or with components of the container closure system when stored according to labeled directions."

Oxygen in the air is the oxidant, the moisture facilitates the reaction

577 iodide

Posted by: Potassium 'cough' iodide at November 25, 2012 03:46 AM (HNn1q)

578 it's simple, iodide oxidizes to form iodine
oxygen reduces to form a number of species, most likely hydroxide, but also hydrogen peroxide or water are possible

water is one of the reactants needed for the oxygen reduction.  but also, water serves as the facilitator for the reaction, as it brings the two reactants together.  think of it like speed dating.  in the absence of a speed dating coordinator, a man and a woman would have to just randomly bump into each other in order to meet, which can take a long time.  but in the presence of a speed dating coordinator, the man and the woman are brought together and are able to "react".
