Overnight Open Thread (26 Oct 2012)
— CDR M

What up morons? Hurricane Sandy really messed up my day and probably my weekend as the Fleet is in the process of hitting the seas to avoid whatever Sandy has in store for the area. Hope all you morons that are in the path are prepared for the worst i.e. you got your medicinal booze in appropriate amounts.

Latest on Hurricane Sandy.

This might come in handy in the next few days. Power Outage and Blackout Tracker. Lo Pan Style

I don't get the Gangnam Style thing but this is a pretty damn funny with a Big Trouble In Little China flavor.

Are Lap Dances Art?

New York's highest court weighs in. Bump And Grind Not So Fine Art. I don't know. I've seen some pretty mesmerizing performances that I would say were pretty "dramatic". Well, that was a long time ago. Actually, that's what a friend told me.

Lap dances are taxable because they don't promote culture in a community the way ballet or other artistic endeavors do, New York's highest court concluded Tuesday in a sharply divided ruling.

The court split 4-3, with the dissenting judges saying there's no distinction in state law between "highbrow dance and lowbrow dance," so the case raises "significant constitutional problems."

The lawsuit was filed by Nite Moves in suburban Albany, which was arguing fees for admission to the strip club and for private dances are exempt from sales taxes.

The court majority said taxes apply to many entertainment venues, such as amusement parks and sporting events. It ruled the club has failed to prove it qualifies for the exemption for "dramatic or musical arts performances" that was adopted by the Legislature "with the evident purpose of promoting cultural and artistic performances in local communities."

Ugly Divorce

This is just wrong but opens the door for so many things you can try to get a divorce and settlement for. Man Sues And Divorces Wife For Being Ugly, Wins.

The northern Chinese man, Jian Feng, married his wife and was reportedly absolutely in love with her. Soon, as will happen, she became pregnant and gave birth to a baby girl, which was when the problems arose for Feng.

He thought the baby was incredibly ugly, to the point where it horrified him. The baby resembled neither of her parents, so Feng demanded to know who the father was, because jumping to conclusions about your wifeÂ’s faithfulness is the obvious thing to do when you have an ugly baby.

As it turns out, his wife didnÂ’t cheat, but did gloss over the fact that she had spent $100,000 on intense plastic surgery to severely change how she looked before she met him. ItÂ’s the kind of thing that can slip your mind on the first date. After his wife revealed this to him, Feng took the only right-minded course of action and divorced and sued her, claiming that she got him to marry her under false pretences. The false pretence presumably being that she was good looking. Incredibly, the (presumably male) judge sympathised with Feng and he won $120,000 in the case.

2 Hillbuzz barely registers on my internet radar (Brooklyn decker, Kate Upton, etc), but he did in fact bitch-slap Ace, and it was at least in part reasonable. And even if it wasn't reasonable, it was a rollicking good bitch-slap, so Ace should just roll with it.

Ace is, understandably, a bit frightened of the possibility of an Obama win, and it probably makes him sick to his stomach (or is it the rancid hobo meat?), but we all need to be strong, sure, and upbeat.

We will win this thing, and Obama will be relegated to the dustbin of history (yes, you may quote me).

The poll prior to that showed Obama up by seven, and the one before that showed Obama up by nine. Obama won Oregon by sixteen points in 2008.

Oh my gosh I am laughing at the "gangnam style" thing because I just went through a whole thing about it. They played the song at the elementary school for jogathon on Wednesday and the principal and another parent were dancing like in the video. Other parents who are unaware of the global phenonmenon that is PSY (sadly, I confess to being one as I haven't been paying attention to all the k-pop talk here) objected to the song because the only line you can understand is "hey sexy lady" which didn't seem quite cricket to play for young kids.

Of course we all take for granted that YMCA is played as a "cute" song with arm movements, never mind the original connotation of a bunch of gay men singing about how fun it is to stay at a YMCA...

"I always just thought, "metal", but it appears that there are actually finer distinctions."

Meh, to me there were maybe three (at the most) different actual styles.

Sometime in the late 80s, contemporary musicians and music lovers seem to have decided that when you simply write an original piece of music within a genre, that you've actually created a whole new fucking style.

People put waaay to much emphasis on the category. A slow moving, particularly Wet Cat-1 can do tremendous damage. Measuring the wind speeds alone is very misleading.

Although that storm last year did not damage NYC, it destroyed parts further north.

Hell, we've had tropical storms pass 100 miles from Jax and the bands cause terrible, damaging flooding.

175 "There are only five regular polyhedra." lol, i know. i asked for uniform edge lengths, not face transitivity. i've already made plenty of copies of the platonics. :3 there are over one hundred uniform (i.e., vertex-transitive) and semi-regular polyhedra whose faces may be different polygons but still all have the same edge length...but the largest faces they seem to incorporate are decagonal. i would have to make the dodecagon from six squares and twelve triangles anyway, so it's not like i care about face transitivity. seems like the question could only be answered by someone with a solid geometry background (punny punny xD). these things aren't really practical, so there's not a lot of easy information on them...

195 also, just fyi, the octahedron is not actually double the tetrahedron...the octahedron is similar to double a SQUARE pyramid, whereas the tetrahedron, as you say, has a triangular base. if you stuck two tetrahedra together, then the dihedral angles between two faces with different "bases" would be much larger than those between two "adjacent" faces sharing the same "base", so there would be a difference between those faces.

Posted by: Christopher Taylor at October 26, 2012 10:56 PM (r4wIV) Kinda hoping some severe bloodhound team gets on it and a *bunch* of people go to jail. Quality entertainment. Then again, given their lax legal system, the penalty is probably three months and a slap on the wrist, and the statute of limitations is probably an hour and thirty-seven minutes.

Posted by: Merovign, Dark Lord of the Sith at October 26, 2012 07:02 PM (bxiXv)

238 #207 - Christopher Taylor, I'm reacting to the Savile story with caution. One thing I learned, having been in California during the McMartin case is that when the stories start involving a "ring", it's a good idea to become a skeptic.

People, especially if recalling an event from a long time before, are easily led into "remembering" things that didn't happen; they are not "making it up", they are being led by the questioners. Add in just one or two sensation-seekers, and you have a recipe for a witch-hunt. People will sincerely believe the events happened, but that, unfortunately, does not mean that the events actually did. And "innocent until proven guilty" still needs to apply.

I could donate $100 to the Romney campaign today.....or

How about this - Offer $100 to the Boy Scouts of America (in Ohio?) if a scout will make an effort to help transport 5 people to the polls on election day.  Maybe these voters might be in retirement homes and unlikely to vote unless provided transportation - who knows.  But, I think it's likely whoever a Boy Scout chooses to help isn't likely to be a Dim.

Anyways, just a thought.  If this could be organized via social media, it might be a more effective GOTV effort that donating directly to the Romney campaign.

A beagle without a conscience?!

My black mutt has something worse: a sense of humor. I have stories. Lots of stories. A sample:

Back when I lived alone, I had tickets to a concert in San Francisco. I came home, walked and watered my girl, and told her I'd see her later. I went to the concert, got home around 1 a.m., took her out, checked her water, scritched her ears and went to bed.

The next morning, after doggy breakfast and walkies, I started to put my scuffs on to go clean up my back yard, and stopped.

She'd carefully, lovingly, artistically, placed a turd in each scuff.

She sat there and grinned at me.

Honestly, half the pictures have captions that say, "I have no shame" or a variation on it.

My Xena (much loved and deeply mourned) would be overtaken by Psychokitty. When Psychokitty was caught, scruffed and about to be punished, she would vacate the premises, leaving Xena holding the bag.

You could always tell. Her Highness would suddenly look bewildered, then just sag from her scruff. "Oh, no. Not again." Not even an exclamation point was involved.

That's the worst part about watching movies from the 50s-80s, there was not even a shred of an attempt to make the makeup and hair styles look period. As much as I like many of the films from that period, sometimes it was just so awful.

357 As a Floridian who survived Charley, Frances, Jeanne, and even Katrina (she passed over Florida before hitting New Orleans)... here's my hurricane advice for any New England morons.

Fill up as many plastic jugs, bowls, etc with water as you can, and put them in the freezer. At the very least, they'll turn your fridge/freezer into a big cooler if the power goes out. At most, it's a secondary supply of potable water if the utilities all go to hell. If you really think your water utilities will be disrupted, fill a bath tub in case you need to wash anything, including yourself.

Do all your laundry and wash all your dishes while you still can. While you're at it, top off your gas in all vehicles and any gas cans you have around. If the power goes out, many gas station pumps will be out of commission.

Common sense stuff: batteries, candles, non-perishables. A car charger for your phone is a godsend. Get a good book. Depending on how hard you were hit, the day after a hurricane is an opportune time to get some yard work done (maybe that's a Florida thing).

And, depending on your neighborhood, a little ammo never hurts. Blackouts and shortages bring out the worst in people.

@351  Yes,  it's  noteworthy how period films of  whatever  era,   ancient    Rome, Napoleonic times, whatever--you can tell what  decade  it was filmed in because the     hair and makeup dept.   refused  to be accurate   and  wanted the  actors  to  appeal  to  contemporary  tastes.    That  started  to change somewhat  in  the  1970's   however.

And speaking of historical accuracy wrt   period  films--they never  show  people with  smallpox  scars  or  bad teeth  or scratching their lice and flea bites.  Nor do they show  rushes  and   straw on the floors  which  were used even in palaces.  (often the straw was mixed with scented herbs if you were rich.)  In fact, that's  where   we  get  the  term   'threshold'  from, a  strip  of wood   in  front of the door to keep the thresh (straw) from being  tracked outside.

Your phone not going to work for more than a day if electricity is out.  Cell tower generators only last a day.  Got a land line?  It will work unless the line is cut.

Mostly, batteries for lights at night and water and beer. Headlights for your head not your car.  Start eating everything in your freezer, cause if you  lose power for more than 48 hours, it will go bad.

Really paranoid?  Go buy some dry ice, NOW.  Then you can put it in your freezer and not lose anything for a week.

Mostly, I think this is weather channel hype. meh.

I don't think a hurricane would hit one party. Plus the storm is due A WEEK before election day.)

Richard Dawkins coined the term in The Selfish Gene; I can't (off-hand, anyway) remember which science fiction writer first used it in a novel and began its popularization, but I do remember that the guy who wrote "Schizmatrix" used it in his book reviews for Analog, and it definitely started appearing in Analog shorts.

And it's pronounced "meem" (long e), generally. Because, being English speakers, we think of a single vowel with an intervening consonant and an ultimate 'e' as being long. We're funny that way.

Like a mental gene, a component of an idea that interacts with others to form a cultural context or whatever. It's popular because of three factors: 1. It's simple enough to grasp the idea that most people can manage. 2. It makes people feel like they're smarter when they use a slightly rare word for "idea," and 3. It's easily abused to dismiss or spin an idea someone else has.

453 Rap/Hip Hop has wrecked American music as it has infected every other style.

It's the fault of all the idiots who embraced it as "kewl" and showed how hip they were listening to urban degenerates putting they're pitiful degenerate lives to rhythm.

It's like a virus. the only way to stop it is to remove the vectors but it hit just as home videos began taking over professional ones.

now any nitwit with a phone can do a "rap song" and get noticed.

that they disrespect themselves, America, society, civility and the law doesn't matter to them and most truly are gangsters and if they aren't rapping, they're out stealing and robbing. Look up how many "rap stars" are criminals. It's not an accident or a conspiracy by the man it's that that's what they believe is okay.

And that's what the Dems do every single time they bring up a "tax cut" bill in the Senate.  Cut taxes for one group of people and "pay for it" by raising taxes on others, often whoever is the boogeyman at the moment.  Sometimes the tax "cuts" are so miniscule or complicated to qualify for that the bill's purpose is simply messaging ("Hey, we want to cut taxes and Republicans won't let us!  They're evil!")

Looks like they weren't doing so well today, as only 3 or 4 buses had more than a dozen people at a time. Of course, many of the union workers who work at the casinos have already voted, but the unions seem to have forced the casinos to give the union member 50% more break time so they can be bused-in in mass. The most interesting thing: Richard L. Trumka, the President of the AFL-CIO popped in and thanked the polls workers and observers for their "great work." Even shook my hand (I couldn't just start something in the polling local).

When I started hearing people on the news using that non-word, I almost lost it. I figured that they might as well just reduce themselves to grunts and groans at that point.

I can't be sure, of course.....but it does seem that "dissing" someone became important when rap started becoming popular. I was somewhat surprised to learn how extensive the heritage of "disrespect" actually was when I looked it up just now. I was actually looking to see whether the word might have been coined in the last 50 years, although I should have known better because (IIRC) it occurs in Gilbert and Sullivan.

It certainly has acquired a darker nuance, however, when perceived "disrespect"  (whether intended or not) can supply justification for murder -- and, further, is publicly acknowledged as such in public performances.

Posted by: Jcw46 at October 27, 2012 01:30 AM (Vh0f5) Dianna meant well and was just ribbing you a bit, though many people really don't accept the use of "disrespect" as a verb. I'm not one of them, but their view is not uncommon nor without defense. Dianna was also making a point that much of hip-hop culture seeps through the periphery, escaping our notice. "Disrespect" didn't really come from hip-hop, but the concentration of it and heavy use seems to have, as first "dis" was adopted by many (and we all agree that that is just dreadful quasi-language) and then it was translated back to the normal word "disrespect" for most regular speakers. But, many still don't like "disrespect" ... and it is overused.

the Benghazi stuff? It makes me angry and sad and scared and then back to angry again but I don't let it affect me too much (I have that luxury) as I KNEW this guy was going to have something happen during his 4 years.

When people make comparisons of him and Carter, most probably don't have a clue how accurate they are.

I lived the worst of Carter's years. In fact, I would say that those years put such a dent in my life that I didn't START to recover from them until about 1995 and a few more years after that my age started to catch up to me.

so my potential for having any sort of decent life was destroyed by that georgian putz.

When I say Obama, I said; Jimmy F'n Carter all over again.Thank you George Bush and the Republican party. We get to live the Carter years all over again.

Why do people still vote for Democrats? Why???? I ask myself; Why do blacks (who get royally screwed by democrats) keep electing them. Why do Jews ( who can't see an antisemite unless they're known to be a Christian) keep electing Democrats? They keep screwing Israel and they've never balked at screwing jews or blacks.

If the Democrat party ever lost those two groups, they'd never win another election. except maybe a very local one in NYC Or any other big city.

It astounds me folks who vote against there own best interest. With no reason. Only fairy tales told by the Democrats.

Very interesting point. The whole rap "stream of consciousness" spewing is a bit of a problem for me, personally......

Oh, hell, I'll tell the story. So, when I was in fifth grade, there was an opportunity at my school to take foreign language classes in French, Spanish, or German -- so I chose German....and, at the end of the year, moved out of the district to another where they only had French and Spanish. So I took Spanish.

But then we moved back into a district that had German, so I took German 1 all over again (it's hard to get yourself in the right frame of mind for conversational German -- sort of like Reverse Polish Notation calculators) -- although it was real Junior High German instead of the Elementary School intro to German.

I know you can all see this coming, but we moved again -- so it was back to Spanish. And we moved again, and again, and again.....and so it happened that I ended up in my Senior year in High School taking third year honors Spanish, while taking intensive first year college German at the local community college, and an elective speech class. And fucking fried my parser.

Ever since then (though it has improved with time), my first impression of speech is "Inth eh beeg in ingthair wa 'zehev en andurth" -- and it takes me a couple of tries to sort it out into words -- and rap, with odd phrasings and rapid patter, is incomprehensible nonsense until long after it ceases to matter. Incidentally, there's a handyman I've worked with for years who speaks about 75% Spanish and 25% English, and I have to torture him with my horrible Spanish all day (and fast-food cashiers) because it grinds the gears so bad to switch.

So, when you label it "Urban doggerel", that has a lot of resonance with me.

It's why we don't talk like the British or the French or any other language we've adopted/adapted.

As to claims by many as to "correct usage" I don't think that in common or contemporary speech that there is one.

There's correct usage for written English and there may be style books or practical guides that tell one how to speak publicly, but personally, I don't subscribe to a rigid usage.

If it enhances and clarifies what you are saying and is fitting to where you are saying it and to whom you are saying it, then it's correct usage.

The purpose of language is to COMMUNICATE IDEAS. If you accomplish that with clarity and brevity, then you're using the language correctly.

Any other definition is pedantic , pedagogic and reminds me of George Will.

Criticism of someone for failure to speak or write correctly is for English classes. Not comments on a blog. (unless the conversation is about correct usage as here and now.)

Amusingly enough, we don't even need to absorb our influences from humans. One night I was at a topless bar with a former stripper, and they played lots of rap videos. It was the same lowlife, braindead garbage in every song/video.

1) How rich they were/ all the expense items they owned

2) What badasses they were

3) How all the women wanted them/how often they get laid/ how big their d*cks are

4) How they loved getting high

I've found the more into hip hop someone is, the more likely they are to be human garbage.

I was into rap back in the early to mid 80's, and it wasn't as as cretinous as it is now.

584 This will be a short one, since I've been a poll observer for about 11 hours strait today with no break for food or water. After the first week of early voting, the Democrats have a statewide raw vote lead of ~26K, with a third of the vote in. The numbers in Washoe are about even, Clark County had a Dem lead of 36K, while the rurals had a GOP lead of 10K. Combining with the Dem lead in Clark county shrinking to 62% of what it was with 4/3 of the total vote, Washoe coming in even, and the rural counties given a generous 25K total lead come election day, Obama will win by about 6 to 7%. This assumes that the 2008 trends for Clark County are mirrored (as modified previously) by what we see in 2012 (which is qualitatively not a bad fit). While this may seem like a lost cause for the GOP, Sen. Heller has been polling ahead of Romney by 4-6%. This means that Heller's seat is a toss up. With Maine gone for the GOP, and Mass. on the precipice, a loss in Nevada would mean the GOP must net up 6 seats just to reach 50 votes. The Heller seat is competative, as is the race to win the state Senate and NV03 and NV04. All of the above assumes that 2012 trends like in 2008 (with Dem vote advantage shrunk to 62%, and 4/3 of the voters). The GOP is (allegedly) focusing on turning out low-propensity voters while the Dems are turning out their high propensity voters to gain an early lead and psychological advantage (though that trend hasn't been evident yet). The polling for the independents has varied from R+18 to D+5. My back-of-the-envelope calculations have been assuming that each party keeps similar % of their voters and independents are split. The only way Romney can win is if he does four things: Turn Washoe from an even D/R vote to a positive net for Republicans of about 10%; Team Nevada (Romney & Hellers campaign in Nevada) shrinks the Clark County lead massively; turn a significant amount of Dems into Romney voters (at least 5-10% more than the Dems get of GOPers); and lastely, win the independents by a sizable margin. Baring that, they still need to go all out to save the Sen. Heller.

Not because all secrets are bad or should be made public, but because there is no conceivable motivation for these chains of events that's congruent with the interests of the United States or the safety of its people (or anyone else). And we need to know not just because these were dangerous or even dishonorable acts, but because that threatens the trust of the American people not just in the government we were meant to suspect, but in the systems of that government we can't help but depend on, and it's so-called watchdogs we mockingly call "reporters" because they only seem to do that on occasions convenient.

I think the convention to put punctuation outside quotation marks was inspired by typographical hypersensitivities (all that space under a quotation mark on one side, mandatory post-punctuational space on the other, leaves poor widdle punctuation visually isolated) rather than sense and logic.

So far as I can tell, the people getting smeared with this mess are those that amply deserve it.....but this little scandal's already got a body count. I'm more worried about those who provide the bodies than those who play the game -- and it seems like things are pretty heated-up.

That said, I'm plenty worried about anyone who could be on the ground out there, hearing assets overhead, risking his life to get them painted..........and get nothing.

In that infamous interview Obama gave to 9NEWS in Denver yesterday he said, when asked about whether requests for aid had been denied,.....
“I gave three very clear directives. Number one, make sure that we are securing our personnel and doing whatever we need to. Number two, we’re going to investigate exactly what happened to make sure it doesn’t happen again. Number three, find out who did this so we can bring them to justice.”

So....where are these orders? A President doesn't just talk into the air and shit gets done. Orders from a President are written up on the correct forms and stationary, signed, witnessed and distributed to hundreds of people.
This fucker is the stupidest of liars.

Not necessarily.

See, here's the thing -- what makes it a coup is when slavish devotion to the political overtakes devotion to martial tradition. In the case outlined by the article, someone is replaced by someone more willing to see military personnel die to further political aims -- that's overturning the status quo. But a lot of personnel actions are through the normal course of things -- you get a binder (yes, and shaddup!), review it, and check-the-box.

It's probably a good idea to review every single thing Obama did to see whether it harms American interests......but some might not have, just from sheer incompetence.

The doctrine should include an awarness, by all concerned,  that any acts carried out by perps within their borders is the same as an act by a "legitimate" state.  As the world changes, so must definitions of "guilt" change.
