Overnight Open Thread (27 Oct 2012)
— CDR M

You know, you'd think someone with 43 Czars would actually have accomplished something over 4 years to run on. Well maybe not when you read some of the titles.

If you are wondering what a czar does, you are not alone. Rather than try to explain the elusive term, I will simply list the czars currently on the White House payroll. In alphabetical order President ObamaÂ’s czars as of this writing are: Afghanistan/Pakistan Czar, AIDS Czar, Bailout Czar, Border Czar, Car Czar, Cyber Security Czar, Copyright Czar, Climate Czar, Central Region Czar, Disinformation Czar, Domestic Violence Women Czar, Drug Czar, Education Czar, Economy Czar, Energy and Environmental Czar, Export Czar, Government Performance Czar, Faith-Based Czar, Health Czar, Health Insurance Czar, Homeland Security Czar, Great Lakes Czar, Green Jobs Czar, Guantanamo Closure Czar, Information Czar, Intelligence Czar, Labor Czar, Middle East Peace Czar, Pay Czar, Regulatory Czar, Safe Schools Czar, Science Czar, Stimulus Accountability Czar, Sudan Czar, TARP Czar, Technology Czar, Terrorism Czar, Tobacco Czar, Urban Czar, War Czar, Water Czar, Weapons Czar, and Weapons of Mass Destruction Czar. In addition to these existing positions, several new czars are under consideration including: Zoning Czar, Student Loan Czar, Voter List Czar, Radio-Internet Fairness Czar, Mortgage Czar, Land-Use Czar, and Income Redistribution Czar.

With Benghazi, sounds like the Disinformation Czar has been a little busy but WTF has the Guantanamo Closure Czar exactly been doin'? Did we ever hear from the Weapons Czar in regard to Fast & Furious? Did the Copyright Czar get permission from Putin for that recent ad they ran that ripped off a Putin ad? I'm surprised there isn't a Contraceptive Czar or Big Bird Czar.
Now you know what you're spending $2 billion a year on in support of the President besides his frequent flier miles. Pumpkin Carvin'

With a pistol. I tried it with a shotgun. Came out much different. Somewhat splodey.

Now, if doing it with a gun isn't your thang, perhaps some of these designs might tickle your fancy. Pumpkins by Villafane Studio.

Veteran Health Care

If you like your current health care, you can NOT keep it evidently. Pentagon Waits To Tell Vets They May Lose Prime Health Care Coverage. How convenient to wait until after the election. If you are a vet and vote Democrat, you are an idiot.

Military Stuff

Pretty successful Multiple Engagement Missile Defense Test. 4 out of 5 isn't too shabby, especially as it was a simultaneous test, not just a 1 v 1.

Hmmm. Lasers. On ships. Navy Will Get Lasers In 2 Years. I'm skeptical but down with it if it comes to fruition AND works as advertised.

The Navy used a laser-machine gun combination to shoot down shoot down robotic aircraft during Pacific Ocean tests in 2010. To the disappointment of "Star Wars" fans, the lasers did their destruction as invisible beams rather than as green or red laser pulses.

Explodey Video

Bruce Willis destroying shit.

Obama and AGW

Obama 'Surprised' Climate Change Didn't Surface At The Debates. Um, maybe because the majority of the country isn't buying into that BS and there is this thing called the economy that is on everyone's mind. His concern over something that is very much in doubt and not predicted to really happen in force for decades is ironic given how close the fiscal cliff is and how crappy the economy is. Priorities man, priorities.

Hurricane Sandy

The musical. I keed, I keed!

Cell Phone Weaponization

Hmmm. Pepper Spray Incorporated Into Cell Phone Case. Be alert when they say I want to take your picture after you use your pickup line at the bar.

Kitteh Video

Kitten vs Doberman.

75 Nevada Early Vote Update (1st Week of Early Voting) After the first week of early voting, the Democrats have a statewide raw vote lead of ~28 thousand with a third of the vote in. The numbers in Washoe are about even, with the Democrats having a 1040 vote lead), Clark County had a Dem lead of 38 thousand, while the rural counties had a GOP lead of 10K. The total number of votes already cast are 25% of all active registered voters. With an 80% total turnout, this comes to 30% of the vote. Unlike in 2008, Washoe County (home of Reno and 20% of stateÂ’s voters), never had a day where the GOP had more early voters than Democrats. For three of the past seven days, they did just that, with the last five days showing effectively a dead between Republican and Democrat votes. Also, Clark County (home to Las Vegas and 70% of stateÂ’s voters) has 211,327 early voters the first week, while in 2008 there was only 159,966. The Democrats lead is 37936, while in 2008 the lead was 44,770. While this is an improvement, early voting in Â’08 was only 60% of the total votes cast, while it will probably be around 70% this year. That means it is possible for the Democrats to be in a better position with a smaller lead then in 2008, simply because there are even fewer voters left to vote. In Â’08, the Democrats actually did better than the GOP on election day voters, though winning by only 3% or so. The Democrats lead after the first week in Clark County was about 18% (which is 3% above their voter registration of 15%). This is down by 10% of the total early vote so far from 2008, when the Democrats advantage was about 28%. The Democrats have ballot lead in Clark County is 82% of what it was in 2010. When the fact that turnout is 4/3 of what is was in 2008, the Democrats vote lead shrinks to 18% from 28%, with the reduction being 64% of what it was in 2008. This would bring the Democrats lead down to 68 thousand votes. If early voting is estimated to be 70% of the early vote, and assuming that the Democrats absentee and election day lead of over 4% is reduced by a similar 54% to just under 3%, then Democrats will only increase lead to 79 thousand votes. With Washoe coming in even, and the rural counties given an estimated generous 25K total lead to Romney come election day, Obama will win by about 54 thousand votes, or between 5―6%. This assumes that the 2008 trends for Clark County are mirrored (as modified previously) by what we see in 2012 (which is qualitatively not a bad fit). For comparison, here are two back-of-the-envelope calculations from both the left and the right. All of the above assumes that 2012 trends like in 2008 (with Democrat vote advantage shrunk to 62%, and 4/3 of the voters). The GOP is (allegedly) focusing on turning out low-propensity voters while the Democrats are turning out their high propensity voters to gain an early lead and psychological advantage, though the Republicans do seem to be emphasizing absentee voting over early voting. The polling for the independents has varied from R+18 to D+5 (or more). My back-of-the-envelope calculations have been assuming that each party keeps similar % of their voters and independents are split. While this may seem like a lost cause for the GOP, Sen. Heller has been polling ahead of Romney by 4-6%. This means that HellerÂ’s seat is a toss up. With Maine gone for the GOP, and Massachusetts on the precipice, a loss in Nevada would mean the GOP must net up 6 seats just to reach 50 votes. The Heller seat is competitive, as is the race to win the state Senate and NV03 and NV04. The only way Romney can win is if he can do four things: Turn Washoe from an even D/R vote to a positive net for Republicans of about 10% or more; Team Nevada (Romney & Hellers campaign in Nevada) shrinks the Clark County lead massively; turn a significant amount of Democrats into Romney voters (at least 5-10% more than the Democrats get of Republicans); and lastly, win the independents by a sizable margin. Hey, thanks for the update. I got in a email battle with a sun/rj reporter today. He called me obnoxious. He also told me to get back to planet earth, and snarkingly called me genius.

Then asked me to apologise for some strange reason.

I told him, he was angry, and was the one calling me names. Yeah, it was fun.

109 From WZ: TRIPOLI, Libya (AP) — It began around nightfall on Sept. 11 with around 150 bearded gunmen, some wearing the Afghan-style tunics favored by Islamic militants, sealing off the streets leading to the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi. They set up roadblocks with pick-up trucks mounted with heavy machine guns, according to witnesses. The trucks bore the logo of Ansar al-Shariah, a powerful local group of Islamist militants who worked with the municipal government to manage security in Benghazi, the main city in eastern Libya and birthplace of the uprising last year that ousted Moammar Gadhafi after a 42-year dictatorship.

182 Reportedly, Romney said in Defiance Ohio that Fiat-Chrysler's move of all Jeep production to China will cost 1100 jobs in NW Ohio. The official who said it to Bloomberg, who is both head of the Jeep brand and head of Fiat's Chinese operations, has been seriously trying to unfuck himself. He said it in a sort of pidgin Italo-Chinglish, and of course he didn't say that at all. What he meant to say was that their Chinese operation would produce all of Jeep's lines, not that all Jeep's lines would be made exclusively in China.

Hey, easy mistake to imply, when you're dealing in all those different languages, and by the way, how did you come to be both the head of Jeep and the head of Fiat China? Remember what that Weapons officer in Crimson Tide said about "putting on a rubber"?

So, Romney's new Ohio ad doesn't exactly repeat what he said. He just says that they're going to make Jeeps in China, which is true (they did before, and rather disgustingly still made the Rambler Six in the real Cherokee there, after they had pissed away both successful products here, but hey, that was a different foreign national company that did that, and at least we didn't pay them to take it). And the papers and the talking heads and the mouthpieces are just screaming mad. LIAR! LIAR!, they politely comment...

It's leaving a big black skid mark right up their yellow spines.

The implication is a nasty, dirty lowdown trick by the Romney campaign and I'm so proud of him for it, well, I just sent more money.
"R money," I guess they call it.

On top of that, the real Joe the Plumber debated Sister Marcy last night, and came out the better. He doesn't have a prayer, of course, but for the first time in her life, she bled.

The firewalls are all on fire, and the Black Swamp is in play.

195 Just got back from the Romney rally at Land o' Lakes, Florida. This was his 3rd of three stops in Florida today. It was at a high school football field, and it was packed (the bleachers and the field itself). I would say 4000+ people, but take that with a grain of salt. We were standing on the 30 yard line, the podium was smack in the middle of the field. Romney got there a little late, which we just learned was probably due to Rubio's daughter's accident (Rubio made the first 2 stops, but then flew down to Miami). The crowd was FIRED UP! Mitt gave what I guess was his usual stump speech, but everyone lapped it up. He was good. I remarked to my wife that it was "hope and change" but without the stupid platitudes. It was sincere, optimistic, and clear that Mitt desires the best for America. None of that negativity from the other camp. Let's all do our job now and give him the chance to clean things up.

220 TRIPOLI, Libya (AP) — It began around nightfall on Sept.

With drones overhead relaying information in real time, everyone in the White House and all military commanders knew the size and scope of this operation. One hundred fifty attackers is huge.

There's now absolutely no doubt in my mind that General Ham did try to mount a rescue and was temporarily relieved of command, and I'll bet Admiral Gaouette raised hell about it and was cashiered.

AFRICOM and the commanders of all carrier strike groups headed for the Middle East would know that this was a massive attack, and they would've gone crazy when nothing was done to try and save our people.

Obama and Company knew from the start that this was one of the biggest terrorist attacks on any American interest in years, yet they're still lying about it.

Next week will see the obliteration of Obama's chances at re-election.

283 During our hike today, I outlined the Benghazi situation to the BH. About halfway through the list of betrayals (embassy needed security, got locals; Stevens wanted more security, Austrian embassy got a Volt; ex-SEALS heard compound was being overrun, were told to stand down; ex-SEALS heard more bad news from compound, were told to stand down again; ex-SEALS went to compound, rescued people, and kicked ass -- didn't get backup for seven hours; ex-SEALS painted target for overhead assets, who didn't hit it....), she started asking who had done this. I said that Petraeus said it wasn't CIA. She guessed the State Department, and I commented that the military doesn't report to Hillary.

Judging from her reaction -- assuming that Petraeus didn't lie outright -- neither Panetta nor Obama should be sleeping well these days.

About 20 years ago I connived my way into one of the executive chalets on the last day of a somewhat famous North American airshow . As I was swilling free wine at a table with an excellent close-up view of the runway, I noticed there were two really quite beautiful tall blonde women sitting at a table nearby.  But they were not drinking.  And they were in flight suits, not USAF ones, that fit very nicely.

After a while they left, and some time later I saw them walk out to the flight line in full flight gear, and mount up into an F4-E (which is what I think is in the picture).  At their departure, it was announced that they were civilian contractor pilots for the test range at McDill AFB, and were returning there after showing the F4 on static display for the weekend.  Their departure was... orgasmic.

If an erection lasting more than 4 hours is cause for concern, I am beginning to get really worried about the one I get every time I think about those "girls" for the last 20 years!

356 If true ... huge RT @macranger: Pentagon source: outraged Senior military officers are considering coming forward on Benghazi

Just listened to a half-hour interview with an anonymous former member of the Commanders in Extremis Force that was ready to go in Italy.

He said Panetta is totally full of shit when he says that he, General Ham, and CJCS Dempsey determined that it was too risky to send in troops without knowing the full situation.

This veteran said that the Commanders in Extremis Force is a "green light" organization that ALWAYS goes in, regardless of the situation. They're more highly trained and heavily armed than the Delta Force, and their mission is to go in first, always. There's no such thing a mission they would not be used for.

When something happens, such as when a consulate is attacked, they're automatically readied. Only one person can order them to stand down.

Guess who?

This veteran said the same thing you did: The military community is about ready to blow up over this. It's the worst dereliction of duty they've ever seen in their lives.

390 Would you even be able to target a far away (over the horizon) ship with a laser?
... only by being very fancy and having an insanely powerful laser bounced off of, say a satellite or balloon held mirror. Which while theoretically possible would be just ridiculously challenging. Straight lines only. Or, straight enough; if Einstein is right, the light does bend around the earth, but to such a small degree it would be useless for targeting over the horizon.

392 "Blooming" read that one in a Clancy book. Did have to do with the laser heating the air around it which ended up screwing with the integrity of the beam somehow. Needless to say this is all so far over my head I couldn't see it with a telescope.

Posted by: teej says go K-State at October 27, 2012 08:44 PM (d4o2E)

393 "Can't decide between purple and teal." kind of depends on what the rest of the room looks like! can'y just choose a pretty colour...gotta be in harmony with the rest of the room! if you've got brighter, airier colours, go with the teal, for sure. if you've got a more mature, subdued, earthy thing going on, use the purple (which is rly more of a wine, neway)!

398 There are several optical techniques to defeat blooming, without going too deep, you minimize air turbulence by not burning the same hole. You are moving, and the target is moving, and your refocusing with lots of little mirrors. You don't have to stay on target very long, as you are just making them UN-aerodynamic so they tear themselves apart.

400 As I understand it, you can make a laser that just punches through a mirror, because mirrors only reflect certain wavelengths of light. Posted by: Christopher Taylor at October 28, 2012 12:45 AM (r4wIV) Mirrors are not 100% effective in reflecting all the energy that hits them. Some is absorbed and it can be enough to ruin the mirror. If the air is super heated by the laser the refractive index of the air is no longer the same and no longer as uniform. This produces more scatter and that nasty laser smell.

Posted by: Christopher Taylor at October 28, 2012 12:45 AM (r4wIV) Since a laser only has one wavelength in it, this is hardly germane. The real reason is heating and destroying the reflective surface because nothing is a perfect reflector. But it was enough to blow up the sub that was going to take down the moon shot rocket.

Posted by: Christopher Taylor at October 28, 2012 12:51 AM (r4wIV) No. Mirrors reflect a broad range of wavelengths. What goes unnoticed is the decrease in intensity comparing the reflected light to the input light. Some of the input light is absorbed, pretty much independent of wavelength, and is converted to heat. IIRC it is done by singlet-triplet conversion. Visible light energy becomes infrared or heat energy. The mirrors warms up. Put enough energy in the input beam and the mirror is toast.

435 I am not sufficiently edumacated enough to explain but the laser transmits a large amount of energy to the target in a very short time so there is a very powerful kinetic effect, it is not merely a matter of burning through .

Posted by: yankeefifth at October 27, 2012 09:01 PM (Z9EHQ)

436 " ... then its just a matter of cutting through whatever material the mirror is made out of - glass and silver, or whatever." It is possible to punch through metallic coatings, BUT ... Laser cutters, the type commonly used in industry today to cut patterns out of, say .190" stainless steel, are usually not used for aluminum ... aluminum is too reflective, typically about 84%, and the laser, 2kw-15kw, and only an inch or so away, will not cut well. Do some scaling ... the aluminum decreases to perhaps .030" thick, but the distance increases to a few miles ... how much power is now required? Now add a reflective multi-coating, a cheap, 90-94% reflective one ... Lasers are much more of a threat to optical sensors and thin, non-reflective surfaces ... and the non-reflective things behind them.

444 #380:  No denying it looks good, just I remember an airshow at Willow Run back in the mid 1980s.  A B-52 came over low.  That was loud.
Then a Phantom came over and was that LOUD!  And smokey!  You would have that the Stratofort would have been louder and laid more exhaust, but no.

Aerodynamically it looks like bits and pieces were put on as someone said "Oh, hey - we need that part somewhere...there!"  But it all comes together and as a whole it looks good.

452 As to laser beam breaking down atoms in between it and the target thus blocking the beam: i would guess and I think I read speculation about this way back, they pulse the laser a few times to clear a path then fire the main pulse.

This is similar to what lightning does; the charge first forms a pathway that the main charge can follow which is why lightning seems to strike the earth from the sky but the charge actually is going the other way.

Pulsing works for a whole lot of things that need to penetrate another object.

First off, I think the more matriarchal 'ettes need a different nic. Because we have knowledge. And here is what this mat' will tell you about linens, esp. bed linens, but I follow this rule for all: White. Because you can bleach the shit out of it, and nothing shows up on it. (Well,  except the monthly curse, of course, but that's only about 10-20% of the time, as opposed to the other bodily fluid, which will hopefully be much more frequent. And again, you can bleach the shit out of it.)

The point is this: Dark colored sheets are really pretty when they're freshly washed. After that, not so much. Oh, and dander. You have no idea how much dander.

That being said, I had these same Wamsutta sheets in an ecru on ecru print, and they were fabulous!

Make your statements, design-wise, with the duvet, pillow shams, etc. Sheets should be white or near-white.

Posted by: jake in ID at October 28, 2012 01:22 AM (2CiZb)

I shot exactly zero today, but I took the Grok out yesterday to test my reloads. Also took the Arisaka out and put it on a sled to check the POI, the azimuth is pretty much OK but moves too much (the sight blade is too loose, need to stake it in) and it is 8" high at 100 yds.  I have decided on 6.5 grains of Power Pistol behind 230 grains of JHP, but I won't be reloading my carry ammo. I had a couple of FTE/FTF issues with some of the brass and I have one or two that didn't fire with good primer strikes. They did fire the second time around. Still, not the kind of thing you want to deal with if you really need it to work.

551 WASHINGTON -- The Navy said Saturday it is replacing the admiral in command of an aircraft carrier strike group in the Middle East, pending the outcome of an internal investigation into undisclosed allegations of inappropriate judgment.

Rear Adm. Charles M. Gaouette is being sent back to the USS John C. Stennis' home port at Bremerton, Wash., in what the Navy called a temporary reassignment. The Navy said he is not formally relieved of his command of the Stennis strike group but will be replaced by Rear Adm. Troy M. Shoemaker, who will assume command until the investigation is completed.

It is highly unusual for the Navy to replace a carrier strike group commander during its deployment.

The Navy did not reveal details of the allegations, citing only an accusation of "inappropriate leadership judgment" that arose during the strike group's deployment to the Middle East. Rear Adm. John Kirby, the Navy's chief spokesman, declined to discuss the investigation.

Night kalneva.

The Jackhole, I have a model 60, nice gun but the tubular magazine is no good for Appleseed. jake, the 10./22 is another favorite platform but it seems as if you have to do so much work to them to make them perform well where the Marlin is good out of the box. Also, the Marlin has swivel studs and the Ruger does not. Savage makes a good one for Appleseed as well in their 64, and the 64G has a wooden stock.

571 This post is called: AN OPEN LETTER TO NATE SILVER Nate, I have to tell you something unpleasant...other than getting rid of President O, the best part of all this is going to be the personal and professional destruction of Nate Silver. Yes, you, monkey. You better enjoy the pussy parade, on the party circuit in NY and DC, while it lasts...because on the morning of Nov 7...THIS IS THE END, MY FRIEND. Maybe even the night of Nov 6, unless you can get Lena Dunham to give you some "grief-inspired sex" (birth control on us). You fucking glasses-wearing castrato. A lot of people probably think Silver is a Democratic hack, but really he's a SABRmetrics geek. They've been a joke in Baseball for quite some time. They say stupid things like "Derek Jeter is the most over-rated player in the game, when you factor in his salary" and "Closers don't matter...the numbers say if you pick random people from the bullpen, they'll do just as well, and you'll save money". For people who don't know Baseball...those two statements are kinda as stupid as saying that an incumbent President who's been stuck on 47%, ever since the first debate, is going to have independents break to him, and get over 50% of the vote, and...and that he also has a better than 70% chance of winning the election. Nate, if you're reading this, I'm not kidding, man. The members of the Democratic coalition (e.g., single women, gay men, dead people in Chicago) disproportionately don't follow sports. They didn't know you were a SABRmetrics moron and paid jackass. You're probably all Andrew Sullivan has at this point, other than body hair. He's off the ledge, Nate, but it's only because of you. And when Obama is crushed he will hate you for it as if you caused it. They'll assume you lied to them for money. They don't know what I know, buddy: That you don't know any more about politics than you do Baseball. Oh the endless moronic predictions I've had to endure because of you...and I'm only talking about the Yankees predictions! So get it while it's hot from all sources, old sport. November 6 will come like a thief in the night, Nate...and then winter. LOL

573 The information I heard today was that General Ham as head of Africom received the same e-mails the White House received requesting help/support as the attack was taking place. General Ham immediately had a rapid response unit ready and communicated to the Pentagon that he had a unit ready.

General Ham then received the order to stand down. His response was to screw it, he was going to help anyhow. Within 30 seconds to a minute after making the move to respond, his second in command apprehended General Ham and told him that he was now relieved of his command.

575 A couple days old, but looked around and didn't see this part mentioned, even in the thread for the WaPo poll.

http://pjmedia.com/instapundit/155531/

"The most interesting item in the linked article is not the poll results showing Romney taking the lead. ItÂ’s the disclosure deeper in the article that 92% (!) of Obama voters think Obama is going to win."

92%? Really? I guess they haven't any Glenn Reynolds of their own with a helpful "Don't get cocky" slogan. But seriously, how long will this confidence last if the RCP average keeps Romney ahead by a point or more? He's been in the lead there almost a full three weeks, with the exception of a period of three days being, at most, 0.2% down.

Do they maintain confidence until middle of next week? Next weekend? The day of the election? While I see the obvious tactical advantage in lulling them, at some point you'd think they'd see the tactical advantage in saying, "Okay, this is Serious Time now. Stop relaxing and panic."

The FN takes an oddball cartridge, and I don't know if he would like it. If he's a 1911 shooter you might be better off buying him a gift certificate to Gander Mountain or somewhere he can buy ammo and/or supplies for it (or maybe a nice set of custom grips, or a custom leather holster).

Stop relaxing and panic"..." - Dan K. They've [the O people] been trying. O sent out a grovelling, "we may lose this thing" fundraising email after the third debate. Ezra Klein talked about it in a column...it was linked on RCP...don't feel like finding the link. But in its own way, even Klein's column was doing spin...basically, he said the race was even, but Obama had reasons to scare his voters to motivate them, and Romney had reasons to affect confidence to motivate his. I really think a lot of this has to do w/ the fact that people don't fully understand the Electoral College. A little knowledge is a dangerous thing...and most people have a little knowledge on the EC. Based on the National polls, Romney is likely heading towards a 2.5-5% win. I'd probably predict something along the lines of 47% + change (we can believe in!) to 51% + change, in favor of Romney. The rest to minor Party candidates. If Romney wins by more than 1% in the Popular Vote, his chance of winning the EC is 99%. But if he wins it by over 2 or 3%, it virtually goes to 100%. When Democrats say "if we win Ohio we win" they're basically saying they believe O may lose a close race in the PV, then scratch out an EC win. They may even desire this: Revenge for 2000. Won't happen. Won't be under a point, will probably be over three. The Ds will put Nate Silver in a Wicker Man and burn him for his false and ungodly pronouncements against The Corn...so that in the next election the chads hang properly, darlings. But there's no way to tell the Ds what's coming. No way for O or anyone else. I'll give him this...O tried. And his nervous and overly-aggressive manner should have given them all sorts of cues as to the sorts of internals he's looking at. But they won't believe it until it happens. Even then they'll say it was stolen. Or somehow racism. I'll give O this also...I actually think he'll surprise the American Right, in his dignity in defeat. But his followers...get ready for house to house fighting over the next four years.

OK, let's unpack that. I know you teach -- are you anxious around students? When you say that "being around people" is an issue -- does it depend on who the people are, or what relationship they have with you? Do you socialize with family? Coworkers? People from your past?

642 It takes a couple of weeks to adjust to a night shift but eventually it works out OK. Mids are worse, and if you really want to try rough, I work a 12 hour shift from 6:30P to 7A three days one week and four days the next. My four day week starts tomorrow, it will suck balls because for the past 4 days I've been up during the daytime. I'm trying to stay awake tonight so I'll sleep in the morning, but I'll be up by 3PM latest, probably by 1PM, so by 7AM tomorrow I'll be dragging ass. Did I mention I have a 45 minute drive each way?

The 3 day weekends are nice, though, and the 4 day weekends even better.

646 They've [the O people] been trying. O sent out a grovelling, "we may lose this thing" fundraising email after the third debate. Ezra Klein talked about it in a column...it was linked on RCP...don't feel like finding the link.

---------

But does any of that get through or is it taken as "Oh, another email, they want me to chip in $3. Again." and dismissed as the standard thing campaigns do whether they're up or down? If they hear every night on the national news that, "Romney's campaigning, but scandal and ladyparts and hello here's a new poll showing Obama leading by 5 points," and they pick up their NYT and Silver's saying "75% chance we win. Probably 80% by now," then all the fundraising emails are going to come across as white noise and their confidence is going to remain bolstered.

Unless their Trusted News Sources tell them, flat-out, that Romney is ahead, they'll instantly toss it aside as conservative propaganda. The campaign itself can nudge and hint all it wants, but they really can't afford to admit they're behind. Not on the record. Always just that it's a close fight, and that if you donate $5 now they might send you the President's Leftover Pizza.

That sounds like a tough mother right there.  My team starts at 3, so I come in at 2.  We work until it's done.  This past week, that meant we quit at 2:15 to 3:30, but they're all new, so that may improve.  As opposed to your situation, I don't have to flip- that has to be difficult.  My guys and gals work the same hours every week, so I just have to be there before they come in and after they're done.  It's going to be a good gig as soon as I can figure out, either through behavior or modern medical chemistry, how to sleep within an hour of finally arriving home.  13-14 hour days don't leave much room for life, especially if you can't fall asleep after work.

651 Normally, this would be the time of night wherein I point out that my hash contains "JMB" and yours doesn't, but instead, I'd like to point out that the Notre Dame Fighting Irish are now 8-0 after going into Norman, OK and beating OU 30-13.  Now that that's out of the way, though I admit I'm still on cloud 9, I do fee compelled to point out that my hash contains "JMB", whereas all of yours do not.

Posted by: StPatrick_TN at October 27, 2012 11:33 PM (lJJMb)

652 StP, it isn't that I flip shifts, it's just that on my days off I tend to stay awake days to spend time with the family and then have to transition back to night shift scheduling for my work days. The first work day sucks balls and I usually sleep all the way through my first day off unless I force myself to get up early. No biggie, not like I have a bunch of stuff going on...except for when I do...

It took three tries, but cancer took my grandpa from me.  I hate that cancer exists, but we all go someday.  I find myself cheering cancer in Chavez' case, because, well, commies gotta die.  They are leftover vermin from the failed 20th century collectivist experiment.  100,000,000 dead was bad, but adding one more dictator to the pile is fine by me.  There's room for more.

684 682 makes me sound pretty awful, in that I'm cheering death.  In order to clarify: those that encumber their people as subjects, rather than citizens, deserve no better than death at the hands of those they've oppressed, though a bout of cancer is fine if it comes in handy.  This may be the 21st century, but tyrants are still about.  I'd feel better about humanity if there was a more aggressive effort to remove them from power.  Surely people remember "Puppy Ceau-cescu".

I highly recommend you get your 03 FFL - it allows you to buy C&R firearms online or by mail without transferring through an FFL, plus it gives you massive discounts (at brownells.com) or large discounts (at midwayusa.com) on everything you purchase, along with being able to buy direct from milsurp dealers with no middleman.  I got my 03 last year, and just recently had a 1936 K98 delivered to my door, no background checks, no anything.  The only requirement is you carefully document the guns you buy under the 03 as they come and go.  The record-keeping requirements are minor compared to the benefits.

706 I'm still trying to wrap my mind around the fact that our president ordered supporting forces to stand down when brave Americans were engaged with terrorists. I just can't get my mind around it. I disliked the president before because he's clueless about his job, but this...this...it's just so far beyond the pale that it's rocked my world right off of it's foundations. I don't know what else to say. My wife says I've been acting weird, I have been. This is twilight zone stuff. Really? REALLY? What world do I live in anymore? Forget all the simple shit we argue about, there's room for the give and take of political differences in our great Republic. Abortion, gay rights, welfare...we can argue all of these things, and we should! That's how we reach a conclusion as a people.  But this...this #benghazi attack... Our president pro actively decided and demanded that American heroes DIE so that he wouldn't have to be inconvenienced in his reelection campaign.

It's beyond despicable.

I have friends who still support the SCFOAMF. My wife's BFF voted for him today in early voting. She thinks Democrats "care" for the little guy, and this "caring" is completely divorced from results. Fuck that. My country is being decimated, and all I can do is rage from the sidelines. I'm not happy, and I'm drunk enough not to be able to express it very well. If 0 is reelected, we'll all be living in the Wiemar Republic.

God help us.

They (TomCats) stayed on well past their prime, though. Believe they made it to, at least, the Gulf War?

Posted by: AmeriDan at October 28, 2012 02:38 AM (cq3QL)

718 Liked the A-6 Intruders too.

Posted by: AmeriDan at October 28, 2012 02:40 AM (cq3QL)

719 The F-14 was officially retired in 2006.

Posted by: Vic at October 28, 2012 02:41 AM (YdQQY)

720 Yeah, but the A-6 I thought was ugly.  Was a good all weather bomber though.

Posted by: Vic at October 28, 2012 02:42 AM (YdQQY)

721

06! Damn, just googled and saw that it was first deployed in 74. Long time in plane years, I'd imagine.

Posted by: AmeriDan at October 28, 2012 02:44 AM (cq3QL)

722 Yeah, ugly in the way the A-4s were, or the A-10s. Sexy ugly... Sugly!

Posted by: AmeriDan at October 28, 2012 02:47 AM (cq3QL)

723 F-14 yes, 74 in Bremerton, WA (suck town) on the USS Enterprise.

Posted by: Vic at October 28, 2012 02:51 AM (YdQQY)

724 Suck town, aye. We did a drydock there. Only 20yrs old. Suck X 2.

Posted by: AmeriDan at October 28, 2012 02:57 AM (cq3QL)

725 What got me about Bremerton was how they didn't like sailors.  W/O the base the damn town would not have existed.

Posted by: Vic at October 28, 2012 03:01 AM (YdQQY)

726 Headed one thread up. Nice talking planes with ya, Vic.

Posted by: AmeriDan at October 28, 2012 03:02 AM (cq3QL)

727 Back again. Very true about that little piss ant town. Couldn't get back to San Deigo fast enough.

729 What got me about Bremerton was how they didn't like sailors. W/O the base the damn town would not have existed.   Aw come on Vic, every time there was a BRAC session the good citizens of Bremerton would always profess their undying love and admiration for their sailor boys.

Posted by: Panhandler at October 28, 2012 07:06 AM (rZ5RE)

But all the rest of the time it was sailors and dogs keep off the grass. I had one of those "upstanding citizens" give me a ration of shit for buying gas for my motorcycle in town instead of on the base.

I resisted urge to kill.  Bad PR

731

Anybody know if the shipyard is still open?

Posted by: AmeriDan at October 28, 2012 03:10 AM (cq3QL)

732 Yeah, its still open.  In fact the Stennis is home ported there now.  They closed down Long Beach and Alameda.  All that is left of the lefty coast now is Bremerton and San Diego.

Posted by: Vic at October 28, 2012 03:12 AM (YdQQY)

733 Wait there is also a sub base in WA too not in Puget Sound. Bangor???

Posted by: Vic at October 28, 2012 03:14 AM (YdQQY)

734 Sounds about right on the gas. Why in hell they wouldn't want local merchants selling gas is bat shit crazy, but no surprise. Another place that drives me nuts... Cocoa Beach FL. A tourist town that HATES tourist with a red hot passion! At least the tourist shops along the pier, at any rate.

Posted by: AmeriDan at October 28, 2012 03:15 AM (cq3QL)

735 At the time I was there the gas shortage crisis (thank you Carter) was raging.

Posted by: Vic at October 28, 2012 03:16 AM (YdQQY)

736 Wow. That's a lot of open turf between NAS.

Posted by: AmeriDan at October 28, 2012 03:17 AM (cq3QL)

737 Cocoa Beach, LOL, that's where we pulled our one day of "supervised" boot camp liberty.  Orlando made the Navy promise not to give boot liberty in Orlando.

They were too good for us filthy boots.

Posted by: Vic at October 28, 2012 03:18 AM (YdQQY)

738 I got lucky I guess, my tours in Washington state were done at Whidbey Island.  Motorcycle was a good deal there, head of the line boarding on the Mukilteo ferry on the way to Seattle.

Posted by: Panhandler at October 28, 2012 03:19 AM (rZ5RE)

739 Ah, that explains the gas, maybe. But they sure had a hate on for sailors. Renting one of the deluxe shacks in town was like asking for their first born.

Posted by: AmeriDan at October 28, 2012 03:19 AM (cq3QL)

740 I did boot there too. We went to Sea World. I guess they let the recuits back after you hit the fleet. Oh wait, you aren't that VIC, are you? Heh, the stories they still tell.

Posted by: AmeriDan at October 28, 2012 03:22 AM (cq3QL)

741 When I was there we had just transferred home port (temporarily) from Alameda to there.  Apartments in Alameda were through the roof.  In the early 70s typical rent in Alameda was on the order of $1,000/month.  So Bremerton wasn't much change.

I had an apartment originally in union city 25 miles away to get something reasonable, at $350/month.

LOL, if you are talking about the Enterprise and the steel work table is still located in 3 plant you can see my name peened into the table.  MM1 Grit

Posted by: Vic at October 28, 2012 03:27 AM (YdQQY)

743 I didn't even bother in San Diego. I was 21 by then and all my money went to booze and the ladies. Ah, good times.

Posted by: AmeriDan at October 28, 2012 03:30 AM (cq3QL)

744 No, just a lucky guess. I was on the Ranger in 2MMR. A fellow snipe.

Posted by: AmeriDan at October 28, 2012 03:31 AM (cq3QL)

745 Yeah, I sunk a lot of money in that too.

Posted by: Vic at October 28, 2012 03:32 AM (YdQQY)

746 BT 3 though.

Posted by: AmeriDan at October 28, 2012 03:32 AM (cq3QL)

747 Could you land planes on your boat or was it one of those underwater thingys?

Posted by: AmeriDan at October 28, 2012 03:33 AM (cq3QL)

748 BTW, the last time I checked those old apartments in Union City rent on them was up to $2,000/month and they were a crime infested dump.

I don't see how people can live out there any more.

Posted by: Vic at October 28, 2012 03:34 AM (YdQQY)

749 The old boat vs ship deal huh, crossbows or longbows?

If it floats on the top and it is bigger than a john boat it is a ship.

Posted by: Vic at October 28, 2012 03:36 AM (YdQQY)

750 Yep.Union City was big time gangs, last I heard.

Posted by: AmeriDan at October 28, 2012 03:37 AM (cq3QL)

751 Knew you would catch that. You're smarter than the CIC!

Posted by: AmeriDan at October 28, 2012 03:38 AM (cq3QL)

752 Ah CIC.  I did security checks there one evening.  The OOD came down and asked for volunteers because he thought security was lax and he knew we all had security clearance.

I grabbed a tool box and went up knocked on the door and told them I had shut of water to their radar so I could work on it.  They let me in with no ID and I rummaged through their desks and stuff.

The OOD was right, they had no security.

Posted by: Vic at October 28, 2012 03:41 AM (YdQQY)

753 In Bremerton, they had people go past the gate into dry dock with a dollar bill folded in an ID holder on neck chains for a test. FAIL.

Posted by: AmeriDan at October 28, 2012 03:49 AM (cq3QL)

754 We had turn-about one night when a guy came down the ladder into the engineering spaces which were restricted access.

He told the watch there that he was sent there.  The watch called me and I went up and asked for his access badge and film badge.  He had none so I ran him off.

Posted by: Vic at October 28, 2012 03:52 AM (YdQQY)

755 They sent all of the new airdales down to us to borrow a "BT punch" and a "waterhammer".

Posted by: AmeriDan at October 28, 2012 04:02 AM (cq3QL)

756 Really gotta run now. Again, nice talking Navy with you, Vic.
