My personal favorite is the frequent taunting of Breitbart as gay, where the taunter either (a) assumes Breitbart considers it an insult, or (b) actually means it as an insult.Breitbart, of course, reveled in it, and took great delight in retweeting and exposing that hate, the real source of which is clear: unlike meek approval-seeking chickenshits like me, he relished poking at hornets' nests, lifting up rocks, calling out the bullies on the playground. He made himself an enemy of corrupt political con artists who operate on latent threats of thuggery, called them out on it, and, best of all, knew exactly how they would react before they did. He deserved a Pulitzer, but got something better: their opprobrium.
Plenty will be written about Andrew Breitbart in the next few days, some flattering, some not. As for me, I will drink two beers in his honor tonight, and remember him the way he was last December in Venice - a big, lovable, random, generous, fearless, patriotic grinning goofball surrounded by his family, basking in the coolness of it all.
His Instant Messager handle was "Bodiaz" and he was one of those names in my "buddies list" that was always there (the only other being more omnipresent was Kathryn's), because he was always awake. He was working for Matt Drudge and I was groping around trying to figure out where the fuse box was on this Internet thing. He was a huge fan of NRO and helped in countless ways behind the scenes to help me and us when he could. When he was asked to create the Huffington Post, he based it in large part on the Corner.
But people - particularly NRO readers - should know that Andrew's accomplishments didn't begin with his relatively recent fame and his gonzo antics. People will talk a lot about Shirley Sherrod and Anthony Weiner and that's all fine and good. He'd like it, in fact. But he was a great, sweet, smart guy destined for great things long before he became a cultural touchstone. Indeed, his greatest accomplishment, I'm sure he would say, was marrying up and having four wonderful kids. And that too is something that you won't see in his clips on YouTube.

Living Alone: Weirdness Unleashed
In a sense, living alone represents the self let loose. My hook for the Globe column is the current vogue for using meh to describe the Republican field in the presidential primaries, and in particular Mitt Romney, aka Meh Romney. But it gave me the opportunity to go back and look at how meh developed from early Yiddish roots into its current pop-cultural ubiquity (in large part via "The Simpsons" ).
Along with a Pink Floyd soundtrack. It was a different time.

The Man We Lost
An hour ago, Mr. Onesty said "We have lost one of the best attack dogs we have had in a generation. He was fearless and determined and smart and funny and principled. We MUST take up the baton he has handed off to us and take up the race with vigor...join the fight with abandon." We feel his comment accurately expresses the sentiment we've heard all day.
We never considered how the loss of Andrew Breitbart would affect us. We guess we always viewed him as just another pundit fighting alongside many others: Limbaugh, Beck, Malkin, Hannity, O'Reilly, Carlson, Ingraham, Savage, etc. We were wrong. You don't realize what you have until it's gone, and so we'd like to drop our usual pretense to properly address our loss of a great man.
I'm listening to Grassroots Colorado, a local talk radio show that airs out here. They opened their show talking about Andrew Breitbart. The hosts discussed how they had a short-notice need for a speaker for their local 09/12 rally. They were referred to Andrew, so they called him up and asked if he'd mind flying out and speaking. He made his demands: pay for his flight, his hotel room, a dinner, and a beer. That's it. There was no speaker's fee for thousands of dollars; he just wanted his basic expenses covered and a beer. That's the man we lost.
This 09/12 event was before the radio show, which only started last year. The hosts spent several hours talking to Andrew. He was happy to stay a few extra hours to get to know fellow conservative activists. That's how the hosts first got to know each other. One of them said that, "in a roundabout way, Andrew was responsible for me sitting here right now." That's the man we lost.
Jon Caldera, of the Independence Institute, went on the show and said that he thought of Andrew as "the opposite of a pundit." I realized then why his death was so meaningful, not just to me, but to all of us.
Andrew Breitbart got his hands dirty. I was discussing his death today with a coworker, who remarked that Andrew was more conservative than he had been led to believe. We're not sure where he'd gotten his information, but Andrew wasn't like all those other pundits. He never discussed his own views much. He was, as James Taranto (of the WSJ) has often remarked, the perfect Alinskyite. Breitbart realized that making a positive claim left one open to analysis. He realized that, if you seek authority, then the Left will have ground on which to stand in their quest to destroy you. So he never sought authority. He never made positive claims: I support X because of Y and Z. Instead, he beat the Left at their own game. He purposefully gave up any pursuit of his own authority, which is why the Left's attacks against him never worked. He never sought the moral high ground or acted like he was God's greatest gift tot he Truth. He just made the Left look stupid, and he was brilliant at it. That's the man we lost.
Andrew Breitbart got the President of the United States to fire Shirley Sherrod with a single, well-edited video. Imagine that! A simple blogger/pundit/journalist/whatever he was got the most powerful man in the world to act rashly and drastically! That's the man we lost.
Andrew Breitbart got Representative Weiner to resign. At the press conference, the uninvited Breitbart grabbed the mic and launched into a long tirade against the Leftist Media, sitting right before him. That's the man we lost.
Andrew Breitbart stood before 2 thousand Occupiers. As they screamed their drivel at him, he shouted back: "Behave! Behave! Stop raping!" That's the man we lost.
On Twitter today, I saw a woman say that Breitbart not only responded to her once, but followed her back. He responded to me once on Twitter too. He had mentioned Arianna Huffington. I asked him if she'd ever apologized to him for her hypocrisy and for throwing him under the bus for his HuffPost article. He replie, "No she hasn't. Thanks for asking!" He made sure to keep her tagged in the response so she could see it. That's the man we lost.
All this shows why Andrew's death has hit us all so hard. It's not just that he was so young, or influential, or passionate. There's a lot of conservatives out there who fit that bill. Andrew was something special, because he got his hands dirty: not just once or twice, but over and over again. He stared the lion in the maw as it roared, and he roared right back.
That's the man we lost. There will never be another just like him, but he left us all with a lot of lessons to learn. When the Left shouts, shout back. Don't be afraid to speak the truth. Obama is a radical, so say it! The Government is corrupt and bloated, so say it! When they call you racist or stupid, shrug it off and keep shouting! Fight for what you believe, and help other conservatives do the same, because you never know what kind of impact you can have. That's the man we lost, but with his death, we can gain a million more.
One last thing crosses my mind. The nice thing about being a conservative is that you don't have to apologize for believing in God. You don't have to hide it. So we leave you with this: a tornado in Heaven, Andrew Breitbart is with God now. Make him proud.

The info about Wilma's coloring re-enforces my theory that Caucasians have much more Neanderthal DNA than science wants to admit. Almost all archeological digs that find Neanderthal remains are in Europe and the Middle East.

So, I'm trying once again to tap your generosity (the last time, it was near the end of the month, and someone suggested I try again near the beginning of the month before all your money has been spent on Valu-Rite).
The money raised will go towards their hospital visitation program, where they send out staff workers to entertain kids undergoing treatment for life-threatening illnesses like cancer.

Yeah so you might want to go and check the requirements for that and make sure your upgrades will be enough to handle it. Also better get cracking on ME1 and ME2. Probably looking at around 40 hours of gameplay in each. Just remember. Play 1 then import character to 2.
I'm not sure when my copy will arrive. Best Buy didn't seem to confident on knowing my address. And I went through them because they were the only place that had the Collector's Edition for PC.

I really hope Andrew got a kick out of poking at trolls. He seemed to enjoy it. I really would hate to think that at some level all of that venom got under his skin and contributed to any stress/cardiac condition (even subconsciously.) I know I SAY who cares what people think. And I think I mean that to the point where I'm OK with people being ambivalent or even dislike me a little. But I'd be lying if I said that the kind of hate they had for AB wouldn't bother me.

DLC you MUST get is Lair of the Shadowbroker and The Arrival. Overlord is ok but seems more like side mission type. The Kasumi Goto DLC is pretty good too, and the rest you can do without if you want. Though there is some Free DLC that should have come with the game: Zaeed and the Firewalker missions.

Scientists haven't got much more of Denisovans than their DNA. They got their teeth but not much more; no complete skeletons yet. Enough of their DNA survives to prove that they split from Neanderthals very early. They're as different from the Neanderthals as either are from us, is what I'm trying to say. (Probably poorly.)

When something happens to them, hopefully you'll exhibit some sympathy (assuming they deserve it), but it still feels like reading about a hero or villain in a novel.
At best, you'll be shocked by hearing about somebody passing, but it will be tough to feel more.
With Breitbart, the feeling was automatic. I feel like I knew this guy. I felt like he was a friend of mine. He was the guy you could count on to stand up for you. This was different.
This was tough to take.

I had a heavy heart all day, so my husband and I went to happy hour and had

peeked in at their meeting, I came so close to having a Sam Kinison moment. I
wanted to scream at all of them, "hows that steak taste on the tax payer
dime", of course I didn't because I didn't want to end up on the 11:00
news. So on our way home we notice a crapload of news vans by the Capital
Building, you see I live in Maryland and our dear Gov. is signing the Gay
marriage bill. I made my husband stop the car and I got out and walked over to one of the news people and let them know that all of the legislature was having
a nice meeting over at Ruth's Chris on us, if they wanted to go talk to them.
Andrew was such an inspiration, I feel so inadequate when I think of how brave
he was. He sacrificed his time and energy away from his family to expose what
is going on in this country. I don't know what I'm going to do, but I vow to do
something other than just bitch and whine about everything. We all need to step
out of our safe zone and fight for this country, we need to make sure that
obama is out of office; and we need to make sure whoever is
elected holds true to the constitution. We have to stop fighting about stupid
shit and concentrate all our efforts on exposing and defeating the liberals.

Today turned out to be not bad, our "snow event" laid a paltry 6"s on us, much to the dismay of the weather people. They touted it as a super storm, the schools closed and people acted as if this was something to fear.
But it was great for making snowmen, the grandkids and I populated the back yard with them. Now the temps are slated to rise into the high 40s and 50sby Monday. Totally screwy winter, this is.

--I'd include Rank as an exception to what you argue. Inasmuch as it takes the original material to a much higher level live, it's also one of my favorite live albums ever. So many live albums have just been to tread water and used as filler (of course, they were already broken up by then so there was no need for that). If you've ever heard the original "Draize Train," the live version is almost an entirely different piece. I also think Hatful of Hollow was excellent.

You'll know what I mean when you get there. after you get your last team member with the IFF, take that one with you for the fleet mission. Hilarity ensues. Then go back to the save, because you can screw yourself up on the end mission doing things this way, it's just for the lolz.

I don't think single player games are going to go away, there's been some good ones. Some great ones. Bioshock, Dragon Age, Elder Scrolls, Fallouts, Borderlands is, at it's core, a singleplayer game just with co-op optional, which is cool. Portal SP was good. Assassin's creed is still strong SP, the MP is alright, but not all that great. I liked Tron, though it did have its faults -- but I needed the stamp for my geek creds.
As far as Skyrim's controls go, they're almost the exact same as Oblvions, which were about the same as Morrowind. The menus and huds are a bit ganked, though. I should be able to see things that are affecting me in the main screen while playing, with a blink or fade to show when they wear off. Morrowind had that, but not since. Miss that.
I didn't have any mis-cues with the ME3 demo, but I use a controller (mostly play on console, but prefer controller for PC, too). I know that makes me a heathen infidel n00b running dog, but I like it better. Now that I actually have a decent PC that can play games, I still prefer to fire up the PS3. Was hoping there was going to be a new MechWarrior. Sounds like it fell apart though. I'd do that on my PC.

You may be right. Even I'm mostly playing an MMORPG, just ususally solo, and I _hate_ multi-person games because I don't like meeting people. I'm down to Oblivion as only single-player and don't know if I'll get Skyrim.

I took your advice and got higher level before starting the main quest in Oblivion. You're right, it's much more fun this way and I've done _a lot_ more of the side quests. Last time I accidently finished the main quest by level ten or so and there just didn't seem to be much point in continuing.

Heh, i was just talking the other night about how the last gaming system i had was the 2600, i can still remember my parents dragging me all over town to try to find Pac Man, which Atari had just released and was selling like crazy and we finally found a place that had a couple left, took it home excited as could be, popped it into the 2600 and thought damn, this game is a pile of crap.

Also, there are some hardware compatibility issues, but since no one has seriously tested that, nobody knows what the bad combinations are.
Win7 64-bit + Intel quad core + 8Gb + 2Gb video card seems to help.

I've given my view on that. Bethesda is shit for bug testing and fixing before a game's release. Blizzard is way too OCD about having everything absolutely perfect. And Bioware falls in the middle.
As for your issues with ME2 and the ME3 demo, I just never really seem to have them. And I play with a mouse and keyboard and not a controller. I don't get thrown into cover when I'm not trying to. And the rolling to new cover in ME3 will just take some getting used to. Also had no crashing issues on the demo.

Eventually, even Garvey may come to realize that even the “beliefs” of Climate Science will and should encounter campaigns against teaching it in schools, especially when the “science” hasn’t held up to critical review.
But currently, he rallies with much the same line as Medieval crusaders that “God is on my side” with the familiar twist that “science is on my side” even when it no longer holds true. When the cracks in it's foundation have been replaced with mere “belief.”
For science has no moral clarity. It's clarity comes only from the last test of it's hypothesis.

I remeber first programming a TRS80 model 1, saving the BASIC files to tape at school. Then over the summer, went to the local college for a computer camp type thing, and was hugely disappointed with the mainframe. Paper tape? Octal? PUNCH CARDS? What is this, like, 1950?!?! It's the 80's (this was back in the very early 80's, you know, when the TRS80 was king) guys, get some micro computers in here, STAT! Save to cassette tape, that's the future.
Guy said, that's a flash in the pan, just toys, never going to go anywhere. They'll never have a useful computer for home or business use outside of the mighty mainframe.

Quit harshin on Bethsoft. Yeah, their games are buggy sometimes, but they are also the most wide open things, ever.
I just wish they'd bring back levitate, that was the best thing to abuse in Morrowind. Stat buff to an insane degree and enchant a 99 Levitation ring, you could run from one side of the map to the other in minutes, and look down at all of the cliff racers who couldn't touch you. HA!

Quit harshin on Bethsoft. Yeah, their games are buggy sometimes, but they are also the most wide open things, ever.
"Buggy sometimes" would be an improvement. And yeah they make great games. It would just be great if they maybe delayed the release of the games a month or two sometimes so the game is great to play at the start and you don't need to save ever 5 minutes because its going to crash. New Vegas was buggy as hell when it came out. Within a month or two of release the game was so much more stable.

I got it for PS3, which was one of the buggier ones, but didn't have that many problems with it. The lag was an annoyance, sure, but you close out and restart to flush the memory leak and go another four hours or so. Fallout NV had the same thing. I can see where the interface was a PITA for PC, especially compared to the older ones.
One thing that annoys me is that they dropped support for Oblivion while there were still some major bugs in it. PC's got the unofficial patch, consoles get nada. But I got my money's worth in entertainment out of it. So I just bitch a little.

My gf in college had a TRS80, and upgraded to a Model III while we were together. We'd dial into the school's UNIX computer on a radio shack 300 baud modem -- I'd managed to get the terminal profile for ANSI to run (mostly) for the TRS80, so it acted like a slow narrow DEC terminal.

PS3 XBox PC flamewars are stupid. You can watch the dside by side for XBox and PS3, and they aren't that different. They both try to gouge with accessories. PS3 a little less so, but Sony's customer service ain't much better than Microsoft's. I think PS3 is a little more bang for the buck, but the kinnect looks to be a better add-on than the move. PC's will always be better IF you can afford to keep the hardware up to date, which means a complete rebuild every three years or so. And assuming MS doesn't screw you over with a DirectX update. Pro's and Con's all around.

They need the Navy more than they like to admit so their guns have bullets and their bellies have food -- history is very clear on that, no control over the sea is epic fail. One reason Afghanistan is such a pricy expedition, it's expensive to supply without a water trade route. That's a big reason so many expeditions there fail -- it's not the tenacity of the people, just hard to get stuff there for troops. That, and it's a shithole.

she got divorced and so thats been fun. And now we are running my stallion around and getting him used to the idea he might become a saddle horse again. Ungle Horse is under saddle and the black colt, now its his turn! shes so much fun.
