Welcome to the end of the weekend ONT party.
Are You Smarter Than An 'Administrator'?
Well almost certainly smarter than this one:
He is is Rick Roach, who is in his fourth four-year term representing District 3 on the Board of Education in Orange County, Fl., a public school system with 180,000 students. Concerned over how effective the FCAT (Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test) for 10th graders is, he recently took it himself and well, let's just say there is a reason he was never called Rick 'the Brainiac' Roach:
"I won't beat around the bush. The math section had 60 questions. I knew the answers to none of them, but managed to guess ten out of the 60 correctly. On the reading test, I got 62% . In our system, that's a 'D,' and would get me a mandatory assignment to a double block of reading instruction."It seems to me something is seriously wrong. I have a bachelor of science degree, two masters degrees, and 15 credit hours toward a doctorate. I help oversee an organization with 22,000 employees and a $3 billion operations and capital budget, and am able to make sense of complex data related to those responsibilities....
You can actually take the math section of the FCAT here. Note that they give you all the formulas needed and allow calculators. This is NOT a hard test. So if he was forced to guess at the answers, it's because he's forgotten (or simply never learned) basic math. Here's an example problem from the test:
Assuming he wasn't deliberately sandbagging on the test I'm thinking it's time to have an independent audit of the Orange County Board of Education. And do an accreditation check on all the institutions that ever awarded him degrees.
The Greatest POW Escape of the Vietnam War
Was actually an escape from Laos by Navy Lt. Dieter Dengler.
A lot of talk is made about POWs from Vietnam, but one thinly known fact is that of all the POWs taken by the Laotian Communists, none - zip, zero, nada - were returned to the USA. All were in one way or another killed - except one; and he earned it in the finest traditions of the Naval service.
On June 29, 1966, after hearing the prisoners were to be killed, Martin and Dengler and unnamed others ...decided to make their escape in a hail of gunfire in which six communist guards were killed. Dengler was seriously ill with jaundice, and Martin was sick with malaria. Dengler and Martin and the others made their way through the dense jungle surviving on fruits, berries, and some rice they had managed to save during their captivity.
Read the rest to find out what happened to Dengler. Note that Dengler was an American by choice - he was born in Germany but emigrated to the US when he was 18 in order to fly for the US Air Force and later the Navy.
And Councilwoman Loretta Walsh of Wilmington, DE would like to make it illegal to waste it under her proposed resolution:
[E]ach 'egg person' and each 'sperm person' should be deemed equal in the eyes of the government and be subject to the same laws and regulations as any other dependent minor and be protected against abuse, neglect or abandonment by the parent or guardian.
Because every sperm wasted by non purely procreative purposes makes local authorities irate.
Sara Blakely is one of the few women who has joined the Forbes Billionaires list without help from a spouse or an inheritance. She came up with the idea for Spanx and spent two years and $5000 developing it and the $1 billion company it would become.
And how did she do it? Well with a little inspiration, a lot of hard work, some luck and good business strategy:
Blakely, then 27, moved to Atlanta, set aside her entire $5,000 savings and spent the next two years meticulously planning the launch of her product while working nine to five at Danka. She spent seven nights straight at the Georgia Tech library researching every hosiery patent ever filed. She visited craft stores like Michaels to find the right fabrics. She sought out hosiery mills in the Yellow Pages and started cold calling, only to be told no repeatedly. Immune to rejection thanks to years selling door-to-door, she decided just to show up. At the Acme-McCrary hosiery factory in Asheboro, N.C., she was turned away, only to receive a call from the manager two weeks later. He had daughters, he told her, who wouldn't let him pass up her invention.
He was last seen in 2006 in Uganda where he was enslaving children to fight in his Lords Resistance Army. Before that he was fighting extraterrestrials in central America and complaining about lizards.
This is from an instructional film made during WWII for the OSS. And it turns out that derailing a train is a lot harder than you think.
Todays word is 'abunai'.

The name Islamorada, meaning "purple island", came from early Spanish explorers in the area. Its pronunciation has been Anglicized to aisle-a-more-AH-dah.

Given the rate at which they were killing their own people, I guess it's not surprising that they were killing everyone else's too. Sounds like it's more surprising that they bothered to capture any in the first place.

Yeah, I was going to guess that his "bachelor of science degree" was in "political science" but this is close enough. It certainly wasn't going to be "computer science."

It's been a running joke in academia for a while that you can tell how respected an area a professor is in by how much he insists on you calling him "Dr."
If it's respected, he couldn't care less--if it's in a field like this one, he'll consider it a personal insult if you don't do it.

Nothing wrong with that. I'd probably suck at some Geometry questions today too, since I haven't done it in a long time. But I'm not going to act like the fact that I have a Batchelor's of Science Degree and can't pass a test is an indication that the test is too hard for high school students to pass.
Of course anyone that does have an education degree can correct me on the level of math taken. But unless you're going to be a math teacher I'm thinking my guess is pretty good.

Holy jeebus.
In a right triangle A squared + B squared = C squared.
You're given B and C, so all you you have to do is square C, square B, subtract B squared from C squared and take the square root of the remainder. No sines, cosines or tangents needed.
Roach is an idiot.

You can use it to measure the front of a corner cabinet and figure out how much wall space it will take up on either side. (No you cannot measure the sides because the fronts often extend farther due to trim.)

I think they just added that dynamic for the purposes of this episode. I can't think of another example in the entire series of someone dying a natural death and then becoming a zombie.

$3,000. It always costs $3,000. That's my story and I'm sticking to it for as long as the paychecks last..wait, that's confidential.
You know what else is confidential? I have no actual need for birth control. Men seem scared of me for some reason. Someday my pliant Prince Charming will arrive, and then my fantasy birth control expenses will come true! You'll see.

First we pitch it in the synopsis as cubicle warriors for freedom. Try an absurd angle. Che-toy being the 'warrior' of course to get the suits interested. But make the main character oh a young woman - thinking perhaps now for her to be Bolivian and as story unfolds find out her great uncle was murdered by Che for having too much land, perhaps pitch Selena Gomez to play her. So she has personal reason to object to the Che t-shirt. Keep Wolverine, at first she thinks of him as this loveable puppy but him fighting off her assailants when they try to kidnap her from the parking lot on his day off kicks things into a romance angle. Thought obviously can't call him Wolverine, perhaps Taz? Meanwhile Che-toy and his hapless minions have fantasies of revenge that spiral out of control until that kidnapping attempt. So they retreat to a basement and ... well I kinda run out of ideas here.

I think they just put it in there because they needed it for the ending.

I have to admit I spent about 10 years as a surveying crew chief. In fact, I did 99% of the work and sent it off to my boss to check my work and apply his seal.
Triangles were my best friends. Curves (sections of circles) were also very good friends.
But honestly, I could've figured that one out from what I remembered from fifth grade.
One time our professor asked how many radians were in a circle. The whole class jumped at their calculators. Without blinking I said "two pi". The professor gave the rest of the class about five minutes to figure it out, and none of them came up with the right answer.

I had the honor of meeting him once. He lived not too far away from me.
That guy was totally amazing. Simply would not take no for an answer. Immigrated to this country, really got a raw deal, his first enlistment was pretty much a total botch. Went to college, re enlisted, got his wings and right out of the chute gets shot down and captured. Organized an escape. Got out. His mate gets killed by a farmer.
Two great movies came of his life.
"Rescue Dawn" and
"Little Deiter Needs to Fly" W. Herzog.
The latter is far and away my favorite.
Died, got a full Navy service, with honors, flyover, full Navy band, Eternal Father, horse drawn caisson, the whole deal.
He is a great hero.

It's clear that AMC wasn't to do this on a budget, therefore there less and less zombies as the series go on.

Dale = Lisa from the Simpsons on steroids.
Let's be honest, no one likes the Simpson's episodes in which Lisa is the main character.
He whined and complained the whole episode.
I can't get past the fact that none of them seem to have accepted that the world as they knew it is gone as are it's morals.
That last episode(before todays) made me think of that Marcus Latrell book. Had they just shot and killed that boy, his team might still be alive. As Latrell thought it was the boy who told the enemy where their team was located.
In certain situations, compassion will get you killed. I think a post apocalyptic zombie world is one of those situations.

Apparently this is something also established in the comics. That its not actually the bites that turn people so if you die by other means you will turn into a zombie as well. But yeah they did a bit of foreshadowing on it with the episode where shane was stuck in the bus.

Next test: vector analysis.
Abdul is piloting a hijacked 747 toward a skyscraper that is due south. The infidels' 747 is subjected to a 30 knot wind blowing directly toward Mecca, which is southeast of the Zionist airplane. If the idolators' plane is flying (without benefit of Buraq, unlike Mohammed, pbuh) at 500 knots, what course must Abdul steer to hit the unbelievers' building?

Hi Tammy al Thor! the boy is at his dad's this week. But I talked to him earlier and he's doing fine. Of course his dad let him go on a very long bike ride on really busy roads with his teenage stepbrother and said stepbrother's friends and so now I'm trying not to fret.
It's not that I think kids should live in a bubble, but where they went on their bike ride, let's just say that the traffic there is about as busy as an LA freeway yet the cars go speeds more resembling the Daytona 500.
And it's not like his stepbrother feels especially protective, he's the type totally capable of causing something to happen but making it look like an "accident"

Once again I come to you in gratitude and friendship. I wanted to share a story with you of my dad making dreams come true for his family more than a year after his death.
My dad was not a perfect man, but he wanted to do right by his girls. He spent quality time with me and my sister, and being the screwed-up rightbrained OCD depressive that I am, I honestly think that I would have wound up a total Occupooping drain on society were it not for a stable homelife. My dad was abused as a kid and did not grow up with a good parenting model, but he knew enough to play board games with us, attend our soccer games, and provide for an excellent education. When I was older, he sometimes slipped me a little cash behind my mother's back to help fund my many writing misadventures-- even though I never asked.
He's still doing that!
My dad collected Department 56 Christmas Village stuff, although the last few years of his life it just kind of sat there in the garage. A couple months ago I tossed some of it in the trunk of my car to sell on eBay since none of us were interested taking it. There's so much that it would take several trips to Goodwill to unload it all, and besides I wanted to at least try to spread it around to good homes. My mom and sister said I could keep the money from the sales since I was undertaking all the trouble and time to deal with it, plus both my husband and I are in a financial rough patch right now. But that made me a little uncomfortable since I think the whole family should share in the enterprise.
To my surprise, each and every piece I posted was bought. Not for huge amounts, but there was so much product by volume that the accumulated take will take a bite out of the credit card debt I've been battling for over a year while working on my book. I've been letting it sit in my PayPal account while the items reach their buyers and eBay decides how much of my ankles I should grab when it carves out its seller take.
Now, my dad was a big hockey fan. So is my brother-in-law; he's turned his son into a fan as well. And yesterday one of my FB friends posted that she had 2 NHL tickets available for today, 3 rows from the glass. I snapped them up, paid for them right out of the eBay earnings, and added an extra bit to buy her a beer (my dad was also a big beer fan.)
I am told that my nephew yelled "My dream has come true!" when he heard the news. I hope my dad is up there with Breitbart right now, cracking a cold one and enjoying the best seat in the house.
Thank you for letting me share, 'Rons and Ronettes. He sure loved you all.

While details are still scarce, the group calls themselves The Consortium and they appear to be part of Anonymous and LulzSec. The group claims that the porn site was simply “too enticing to resist,” due to their lack of any semblance of security measures.

They do not always portray Christians unsympathetically, but when they do show them as "good" characters they're espousing something that dovetails with liberal dogma. For example, I recall an episode where a victim's mother begs mercy for the killer (NY had the death penalty at the time) because of her beliefs.

I suppose a reporting option listing comment lines would work if the folks with the keys felt like messing with it would block the occasional dick. There is no problem with disagreeing with someone but gratuitous insults aren't neccessary unless it is to emasculate a troll.

If these fucks had any guts they would pay some mercs to just take the POS Kony out or better yet, strap on a weapon and do it themselves if it means so much to them. The U.S. has no business getting involved in any of it.

The person said they had plenty more names ready for me, but damned if I could taunt them into telling me what they were!
I am extremely thick skinned, and not easily hurt!
My only concern is that I really offended this person with some vulgarity awhile back, and/or that I do in fact yack too much and have run people off.
I just wish this person would be honest instead of snippy, if either is the case. If they just don't like me, well, so be it.
Seems female to me, just my feeling.

Maybe this should be the start of something! Maybe to keep their jobs, politicians, bureaucrats, school administrators and teachers, should be required to pass the tests in order to keep their job and tax-payer funded pension.
And, just a back of the envelop idea: If the politicians do away with testing in order to keep their job, a citizen group, such as Mensa/MIT could come up with appropriate age level testing, which politicians, bureaucrats, teachers and students must pass to retain job, or make it to next level/graduate. After all, it is for the children and they are the future of the nation!
Seriously! This guy is bragging about not being able to pass the test required of primary school students?!?!

I'm hoping to avoid spoilers right now for the ending so I can be thoroughly disappointed on my own on the first play through. I've spent the weekend doing a lot of Multiplayer instead of the Single player. Because I do find it a bit enjoyable to be in a survival mode with 3 others and earning upgrades for characters and credits to get more weapons.
And even though I don't know what the actual ending is, I can see Bioware possibly doing a DLC tag ending thing.

Also, make some believable characters.. PLEASE. Who is writing the script? The scene with Shane and the gay cowboy at the end was about a 1 out of 10 on the 'something people say in real life' scale. And the little kid: Just talking some philosophy and walking around with a loaded gun... at 7 years old

Derailing a train is easy - just decelerate the leading elements, quickly. Dump a load of gravel over a train/ road crossing. Don't ask me how I know this.
If you are using explosives, you want to use them to spread the rails out, so the train drops between, rather than just cutting the rail. This is Army doctrine, probably as a result of the experiments shown above.

is that a nice way to say "you cant say some things so you say other things instead?"
i think this zombie phenomenon a metaphor for the 52% and what they do to us and our fear that they will eat out our sustenance, and destroy our families our friends and our way of life. we feel something horrific stinking and un nameable shambling towards us and so we call it "Zombie apocalypse" because it right name just scares the dickens out of us and can get you put on a list, or in a psyche ward. I think even the deniers feel the pressure of this fear, even if too sunk in denial to know its right name they dare not speak.
calling a an ugly truth by its right name can get you in trouble.
Verdict: diagnosis--"cultural strangulation" is accurate.

Seems kind of a waste to make this a big secret. It's a given in so much zombie material that it would be an anticlimax reveal on this show.
One problem this has always presented is the effect on zombie propagation. On one hand, everybody is potentially a zombie, even if they die of natural causes. But it also means the zombie are not successfully feasting on their prey very often or there wouldn't be enough to rise later.
I'd suggest the zombies rarely manage to trap the living for consumption and far more often only manage to wound and infect. Which makes for a very frustrating existence for a zombie.

I loathe absurdly inappropriate story questions. Why can't they come up with something that's actually appropriate to the formula, like "You're a carpenter building a house. Unfortunately, the blueprint has a coffee stain obscuring the length of the 2x4 you will need. Using the known lengths of the other sides, calculate how much of the 2x4 you will need to cut off".

I think we are making too big a deal out of that administrator's math and reading problems. I took a short course in "report writing" at work. The instructor (a local college English professor) told us that we should write all reports to a 10th grade reading level. She said that this was the average reading level of a college graduate after being out of school for a few years. I asked what the general population was and she just laughed.
As for the "math" I suspect that he took the minimum math classes necessary in college which is typical for an education degree. So he doesn't remember the Pythagorean theorem. so what?
Not everyone is an Engineer. And I have some news there as well, Engineers in real world situations don't remember all that math and formulas either. They keep reference books on the shelf for that shit.

Over the course of my fifteen years, I've worked with dozens of school administrators. TWO were smart people whom I respected.
The rest were absolute clowns who couldn't hack it in front of kids and wanted to make six figures.
Since NCLB passed, my local district has DOUBLED administrative expenditures. In 1999, our district spent 65% of its budget on INSTRUCTION (teachers, curriculum). Last year, our district spent 57% of its budget on INSTRUCTION.
The only intelligent, workable reform that the GOP is proposing is the use of charter schools to spur innovation. Instead of focusing on that, the GOP has decided that they will socially engineer a perfect educational system where "no child falls behind." (what a conservative idea)

I have to confess, I retook both calc 1 and 2 in college, but even I had no trouble doing those problems.
We need to get rid of calculator use in basic math courses. It's a crutch that teachers like to encourage because they don't have to teach and because the education establishment has some obsession with technology.
I would also eliminate most 'advanced' courses from high school. Let them focus on actually teaching the basics.

All the got damn word problems in school have names like that now. Rishawn, Hakeem, Dontavious, Dagoberto, Quanzell, Maricela ad nauseum. You'd be hard-pressed to find a Bob or Sue. My three little morons spend ten minutes trying to figure out how to pronunce the names before they get to the math part of the problems.
Not to mention that dumbasses swathed in more sheepskin than Mr. Roach are making the test questions nowadays, and I swear that a full 10% of the multiple choice questions on standardized tests do not have the corrrect answer as a choice, or they are so poorly worded that none of the choices make sense.
My 5th grader and I argued over an online test question about the function of the rudder on an airplane. The correct answer, " to steer the plane left or right" was not a possible choice. My son said, "Dad, it's B. To balance the plane." I said, "You know that's not right.", and he said,"Yeah, but that's what the book says.", and I said, "You're sh-- kidding me!". Sure enough, he showed me where it said exactly that in the book.
This was in my 2nd grader's grammar workbook last week:
Circle the correct helping verb in this sentence--
Miguel (has, had) made a birdhouse.
My 5th grader answered B and got it correct with the wrong answer.
My 2nd Grader circled "had" and got it wrong with a right answer.

See, I assume anything I can do successfully, but requires a minimal amount of effort or more on my part is something a school administrator would fail to accomplish at all.
So far that seems a fair rule to determine what they;'re capable of. If I can do it with no real effort, they can generally struggle through and eventually manage... usually. That is a bit harder to judge. Some of them are more surprisingly incompetent than I expect.
