Okay sure Obama may have spoken at a rally for Prof. Derrick Bell while a law student at Harvard but that was a long time ago and doesn't mean that he subscribed to his racial views or anything, right?
Well here's what Prof. Barack Obama was teaching at the University of Chicago Law School. This is his Spring Term 1994 Syllabus for his "Current Issues in Racism and the Law" seminar. And guess whose works appear in the required reading.
Okay not as entertaining as the Internet Chuck Norris facts but ultimately more impressive.
- His Real Name Isn't "Charles"
- He Was Bullied As A Kid
- The Air Force Made Him Who He Is
- He Influenced A Lot of People You Wouldn't Expect
- Before He Succeeded, He Failed - A Lot
Read the article to find out about the real Chuck Norris.
Federal Court: Quoting Newspaper Articles Online is Fair Use
The decision also clarifies that a common practice on the Internet - excerpting a few sentences and linking to interesting articles elsewhere - is a fair use, not an infringement of copyright.
Which pretty much invalidates RightHaven's former business plan - suing bloggers who use Fair Use excerpts but who can't afford to defend themselves in court.
The Fellowship of The Ring Commentary
As recorded by Noam Chomsky and Howard Zinn. For some unexplained reason this was never included in the DVD.
Chomsky: ...Of course, if that happened, the entire economy would be disrupted.Zinn: The pipe-weed-based economy.
Chomsky: And, as you pointed out earlier, the military-industrial-complex that exists in Gondor. This constant state of alertness. This constant state of fear. And here Gandalf reveals his true nature.
Genius or stupidity - or a bit of both?
Take this double .45-caliber handgun to the range to attract great scorn and admiration simultaneously. To commemorate the one hundredth anniversary of John Moses Browning's model 1911, Italian gunmaker Arsenal Firearms produced a functional movie prop.
Authorities in western New York say they've charged four young Amish adults with illegal possession of alcohol after their buggy collided with a police car responding to a report of a drinking party under way....As a patrol car arrived on the scene, one of the Amish buggies changed lanes, colliding with the police vehicle. The buggy flipped onto its side, causing minor injuries to one of the people on board.
Police say several other buggies fled the scene.
Tolkien Explains To His German Publisher That He Isn't Jewish
In 1938, some months after the initial publication of The Hobbit, J. R. R. Tolkien and his British publisher, Stanley Unwin, opened talks with Rütten & Loening, a Berlin-based publishing house who were keen to translate the novel for the German market. All was going well until, in July, they wrote to Tolkien and asked for proof of his Aryan descent.
25 July 1938
20 Northmoor Road, OxfordDear Sirs,
Thank you for your letter. I regret that I am not clear as to what you intend by arisch. I am not of Aryan extraction: that is Indo-Iranian; as far as I am aware none of my ancestors spoke Hindustani, Persian, Gypsy, or any related dialects. But if I am to understand that you are enquiring whether I am of Jewish origin, I can only reply that I regret that I appear to have no ancestors of that gifted people. My great-great-grandfather came to England in the eighteenth century from Germany: the main part of my descent is therefore purely English, and I am an English subject - which should be sufficient. I have been accustomed, nonetheless, to regard my German name with pride, and continued to do so throughout the period of the late regrettable war, in which I served in the English army. I cannot, however, forbear to comment that if impertinent and irrelevant inquiries of this sort are to become the rule in matters of literature, then the time is not far distant when a German name will no longer be a source of pride.
Your enquiry is doubtless made in order to comply with the laws of your own country, but that this should be held to apply to the subjects of another state would be improper, even if it had (as it has not) any bearing whatsoever on the merits of my work or its sustainability for publication, of which you appear to have satisfied yourselves without reference to my Abstammung.
I trust you will find this reply satisfactory, and
remain yours faithfully,
J. R. R. Tolkien
The Story of Keep Calm and Carry On
The British WWII Keep Calm and Carry On poster has become iconic in recent years, but it turns out that it was never actually used during the war. The British government commissioned it in 1939 but planned to only issue it in the most dire of circumstances which luckily never came to pass. This is its story.
I have large breasts. I know! They're real, I can't do anything about it and the internet just has this really weird reaction to my body . I've seen a therapist about it, if that means anything. There's like this obsession (with my body). I think people don't understand why I haven't lost a bunch of weight right now, because [sarcastic] 'all women in the media should lose a bunch of weight if they want to go on television to talk about anything.'
Well being a bit heavy is fixable, but being a vapid whiny narcissist probably isn't. And I figure as a country we're already full up on kinda chunky blond airheads.

OK, am I supposed to be in awe of the Kony video, or annoyed by it. I am asking because I thought it was resolved in the ONT last week, and now rdbrewer is linking to it in the sidebar because it is the most viral video ever. They're also from my college christian fellowship, and I don't disown friends over political disagreements. I'd reconsider a friendship over something like dishonesty, but that's character, not conviction.

Maybe the custom varies by discipline? I'm a business professor, here we use Dr. and essentially never use Professor. We use first names amongst colleagues and most staff (admin assts, etc...) but in the interests of respect and formality, Dr. is used by students, grad assts, and those outside the college.
I think the only time I can think of where Professor is used is from our Asian students, it is the custom over there I guess.
Bottomline, I don't think academics get too caught up about the title, just don't use "Mr." or "Ms." if you have a PhD, that drives us nuts!

--I speak in the general-etiquette, Miss Manners sense, as if you were introducing yourself to a layman. I do not like thee, Doctor Fell,
The reason why I cannot tell;
But this I know, and know full well,
I do not like thee, Doctor Fell.
Well I started to adapt it for Obama but it kinda got out of hand --
I do not like Barack Hussein,
The reason why I canÂ’t explain;
(But I can try -- heÂ’s hugely vain,
And looks down with immense disdain
On every Tom and Dick and Jane
While pundits praise him as “urbane”,
Yet any document germane
To what is rattling in his brain
Is under lock and key and chain
And no one knows what they contain.
While preaching that we must abstain
From all excess, he sends his plane
To MarthaÂ’s Vineyard or to Spain
(But not to redstates drowned in rain!)
For “vacay” and then home again
To party and to swill champagne
While big-shot singers entertain,
Yet has the chutzpah to complain
That presidentingÂ’s such a strain
He needs his golf to ease the pain.
He pushes for a high-speed train
And lemons in the diamond lane
And energy from sun and grain
And windmills blighting the terrain
Regardless of what facts pertain,
As long as cronies stand to gain.
He lies in an unending skein
In hopes that each lie can obtain
A few more votes for his campaign,
So he might win and thus retain
A despotÂ’s hold on his domain.
He uses press legerdemain
To hide what quotes are too inane,
And savage all who dare profane
The greatness of ObamaÂ’s reign
Though facts are twisted till they sprain!
And meanwhile, no one dare arraign
His minions who compound the bane,
Like those who bear GunwalkerÂ’s stain
Or unilaterally ordain
The rules that idle pump and crane.
He spends at rates we canÂ’t sustain
As we go swirling down the drain
And see our countryÂ’s standing wane,
But all we hearÂ’s the same refrain ---
“Bush did it!” and “Osama’s slain!”
It makes you wonder if cocaine
Or trauma rendered him insane.
It even makes you want McCain!
If I go on IÂ’ll burst a vein,
IÂ’d better finish this quatrain--)
But this I know, and still maintain:
I do not like Barack Hussein.

Absolutely it is. It's written in the first person (shocka!), instead of in the third person ("the course will address ..."), as is standard. The syllabus is about the course and the students (specifically, what the course will cover, what its prerequisites are, what students need to read), not the lecturer, who is basically irrelevant to the educational mission. It's a thoroughly unprofessional document. I'd have called one of my teaching assistants onto the carpet for writing such drivel.

Ph.D.-- 4 years of hard sciences (no smattering here - the real deal), 5 years of graduate school with courses, teaching, and a buttload of original research (at a princely $5 K /yr), writing a dissertation on said research, two years of postdoctoral research (as a research wage slave at $12 K/yr), then 5 years as an asst. prof. at $30 K/yr, then getting tenure and moving up to the big bucks ($70 K /yr).

that is a rookie mistake. I did something similar the first time I taught a class, I put a book that was "recommended but not required", but I strongly urged the class to read it anyway, as it would be helpful. when they ended up not getting it, the next semester I made it required. problem solved.
Yes, it is. Any sign of uncertainty, any hesitation, any wiggle room, and undergraduates in particular smell blood in the water. Every Sgt. Bilko wannabe comes out of the woodwork to try his angle. Grad students aren't so prone to this, but undergraduate service courses are chock-a-block with jailhouse lawyers.

Actually, after messing with interior stuff for what seems centuries I'm amazed that it fits together so well. Consider the sheer volume of pieces and 99% of it fits/assembles just as designed.
I'd still rather disassemble/reassemble an automatic transmission than take an interior apart! I never seem to understand whether the little snap I'm prying on will just separate or break.

I looked at the twin-barreled .45. I see 2 triggers, side-by-side. It looks like 2 shots at a time are expected, or wasting ammo is assumed, since the slide looks like it is shared ... when at least one barrel is fired, the slide ejects both barrels.
The craftsmanship looks quite good, but the design ....

Conservative Crank, my point was that bang for the buck strongly disfavors the Ph.D. Sure, J.D.'s work their asses off as associates, and M.D.'s do so as residents ... but so do Ph.D's as assistant profs. The first two eventually score some bucks, but not the latter.
To your point, to get his degree I believe the average M.D. has to work harder than the average Ph.D. (even in the sciences; forget the social sciences and the humanities), but not harder than the average professor in the sciences in big league research institutions, who generally makes a lot less (but again, isn't sued, either).

The last time we printed it was just as a reprint, not a new edition, because it wasn't deemed wise to send a field cartographer out to check the roads as we'd always done before. The actual mechanics of our political systems are totally different. It's impossible for us to become Europe. We're just going straight to ochlocracy.
But the point is that the extreme right in America has nothing to do with monarchy. The collectivists are all on the left in America. In the rest of the world monarchists sit on the right of collectivist, party-oriented, crappy parliamentary systems. Here, they are on the left. Anarchists sit on the extreme right in America. And again, not the fake Euro-anarchists (who are just punks bent on mindless destruction and mostly anti-capitalist more than anything) but actual political anarchists.

Anarchists are temporary tools, always discarded after some ends have been met.
This topic isn't well served by my short out-gassing here, but there are some questions:
Does it matter to Utopians in power that they turn a blind eye to...well, anything?
Are our systems being changed, despite the attempt of the founders to keep government from becoming fickle?
Ugh, there surely are many more questions to give this topic it's due...but I'm not capable at the moment to raise them.
Can I be wrong? So long as pride comes before...something!

From somebody who played 3 elder scrolls games (morrowind, oblivion, skyrim), its just how that shit goes. There are tons and tons of side quests. You actually need to do this. The side quests boost skills and give you good ways to get loot and weapons, and in skyrim you will need it.

J'ever see that thing === pardon me, Phoebe Cates tits on TV === Ok, I'm back -- J'ever see that thing about putting the emphasis on a sentence one word at a time:
I didn't say he hit his wife.
I .... (I didn't say it, Robert did)
.. Didn't ... (I pantomimed instead)
...Say ... (I drew a picture)
....He .... (it wasn't him, it was actually Bean)

Actually, I find this tremendously amusing. To begin with, I don't watch TV. We have cable, because the BH wants it, but the only TV I see is when I'm moving through a room where she has it on. We don't go to movies -- I think the last one I saw was Harry Potter -- and the one before that was.....wait for it....Harry Potter. I rarely buy new music releases and don't listen to radio. The only way I know these people -- if I know them at all -- is because of the internet.
But it leaves me with a very curious view. I know Jennifer Anniston as the cute love-interest in Office Space, but never saw her on Friends.....and have no idea why she's so popular on the cover of supermarket checkout magazines. Anderson Cooper is some flaming guy who has something to do with CNN. I don't think I've ever seen a full episode of anything with Robert Downey, jr.

Quite odd that Prof Obama told his LAW STUDENTS that they could either read the actual cases (which lawyers, ya know, do for a living) OR read a radical's interpretations ("summary") of them. Law school is nothing BUT reading the actual cases; having a really smart, arrogant, and incapable of working in the real world guy ask you questions about them (also known as the Socratic method); and attempting to figure out a rule from them. The way Obama set up his assignment - either read it yourself or have somebody else tell you what it means - defeats the purpose of law school, which is to teach you how to read a case and extract a holding from it. Now, add to that that the "somebody else" is not going to tell the student what the case ACTUALLY means, but through his "summary," what he THINKS IT SHOULD MEAN and you have ... indoctrination!
And it's "You're White," dumbass, not "Your White" (Title of the Steele piece).

Definitely not a starving aspiring actress. She'd been working regularly since she was six. She already had a hit sitcom for three seasons that was sunk by the death of John Ritter. Although she wasn't the first person cast for the role in Big Bang Theory. The unaired pilot has a very different character.
