Starting early to get the average back down...

Dissing Rutherford

President Obama has a bad habit of denigrating his predecessors - usually inaccurately - and last week he indulged this unpleasant trait again by dissing President Rutherford B. Hayes as a luddite:

One of my predecessors, Rutherford B. Hayes, reportedly said about the telephone, 'It's a great invention, but who would ever want to use one?' That's why he's not on Mount Rushmore because he's looking backwards. He's not looking forwards.

And as is typical he was just wrong - it turns out that Hayes was quite the early adopter of technology:

Hayes, in fact, was such a technology buff that he installed the first telephone in the White House [in 1877, just months after it was demonstrated]. A list of telephone subscribers published in the article "The Telephone Comes to Washington," by Richard T. Loomis, shows that the White House was given the number "1."

And furthermore the B in Rutherford B. Hayes stood for Badass:

When the Civil War began, Hayes left a successful political career to join the Union Army. Wounded five times, most seriously at the Battle of South Mountain, he earned a reputation for bravery in combat and was promoted to the rank of major general. After the war, he served in the U.S. Congress from 1865 to 1867 as a Republican. Hayes left Congress to run for Governor of Ohio and was elected to two consecutive terms, serving from 1867 to 1871.
...Hayes believed in meritocratic government, equal treatment without regard to race, and improvement through education. He ordered federal troops to quell the Great Railroad Strike of 1877 and ordered them out of Southern capitals as Reconstruction ended. He implemented modest civil service reforms that laid the groundwork for further reform in the 1880s and 1890s. Hayes kept his pledge not to run for re-election. He retired to his home in Ohio and became an advocate of social and educational reform

Leave it to Obama to falsely insult a better man than himself.

Quote of the Day

The most fundamental fact about the ideas of the political left is that they do not work. Therefore we should not be surprised to find the left concentrated in institutions where ideas do not have to work in order to survive.

Has Israel Voted to Bomb Iran?

Ben Caspit reports (Hebrew) that the cabinet now has, for the first time, a majority (eight votes for, six votes against) favoring the measure. This means that theoretically Bibi can begin an attack at any time. Of course, it could mean something different: it could mean the cabinet has approved a strike at any point in future with Bibi determining the timing. So it doesn't necessarily mean the F-16s will fly tonight or tomorrow.

...A senior official said Bibi believed it would be best not to wait for the November presidential elections because he didn't trust the president to deal with the problem after the election.

And based on these rumors oil prices have jumped to $126/barrel. So the question arises - where are the American carriers? Well two (CVN-72 and CVN-70) are already in the Gulf and the USS Enterprise (CVN-65) is on its way.

Meanwhile this is the kind of 'peace' that Israel currently enjoys. This video was shot last week in the city of Ashod while it was under attack by Palestinian rockets fired from Gaza.

Meet Taser-Soccer-Rugby

You had me at taser.

Ultimate Tak Ball is an indoor sport wherein you try to deposit a large soccer ball into a goal while the other team tries to stop you with stun guns. As in, you're running along and then the defender tasers you

This is a game that requires balls of non-conductive material.

It's Tough Out There For a Math Genius

Sure he can solve the Poincaré conjecture, win the Fields Medal, and even be offered (and reject) a $1 million prize but that's not enough to make Grigori Perelman happy.

In 2006 he was unemployed and living with his mother on the outskirts of the city. It is reported that he retired from mathematics, finding it too painful and political.
When the New Yorker interviewed Perelman shortly after he declined the highest prize in mathematics, he said, while taking the journalist on a long walk through St. Petersburg, "I'm looking for some friends, and they don't have to be mathematicians."

Maybe some math groupies would help.

37 John Carter was a quite good movie. Much better than I expected. The CG creatures really are amazing. Avatar level quality. Shows how quickly we get used to VFX advances. 18 months ago these would have been the most amazing VFX in cinematic history. Today they elicit a shrug and the movie is flopping at the box office.

You're right about Hellraiser 1; Hellraiser 2 is a superior movie. 3 was okay, but the Cenobites looked more like Borg than what a Cenobite "should" appear as. I liked Bloodline, but it was a little too short for me. There are 5 other Hellraiser movies that get progressively worse. I liked "Hellworld" solely because of Lance Henderson's and Doug Bradley's presence in it. Anyway, they are all on Netflix IIRC if you and the gf want to see all of them.

What would be really interesting to see is future content involving the other races. Could they incorporate story-lines with the other races say the hanar or the elcor into the main narrative? The potential for at least a quasi-redemption of ME3 is there. >>>Kratos, on another topic. Did you see they're updating Baldur's Gate 1 and 2... then making BG3? No, I did not. Thanks for the info though - my friends are more acquainted with Baldur's Gate than I am. I'm holding out for Diablo 3. The problem is that its about like Merovign said, you can't do a DLC to clarify/correct. You need to DLC to completely redo the ending. Otherwise you can't do much in the way of redemption. Hell almost everything you end up doing in the game becomes pretty pointless with what decision you are left with. And with the ending they gave I don't think incorporating other storylines can do anything. They may have claimed that this would merely be the end of Shepard's story but I don't even see how you could do other stories with the big old steamer of an ending they gave.

Posted by: buzzion at March 18, 2012 09:22 PM (GULKT) I would rather watch Maher color-commenting an Obama speech than see that crap happen again. And the more you think about it, the worse it gets. Peed 5 years worth of franchise down their legs in 5 minutes. ME1 and ME2 are still awesome, and most of ME3 too - except that motherfucking ending. Opinion is split among the hordes of commenters pounding Bioware's discussion board and the Facebook effort to protest the ending whether it's some badly designed social media trick and they already have another ending planned (the Indoctrination theory) or whether the writers really were that dumb.

Which is *also* horrible writing. BTW the original FB poll is basically 98-2 against the existing ending, and so is the original Bioware Social Network poll, which is up to like 52000 responses - 2% in favor of the current ending. If this was *not* some big prank against their players, it was just the most pathetic showing of an ending I've seen in a game, with the possible exception of FarCry 2 - and I'm starting to revisit that appraisal.

183 Watching The Walking Dead is like watching the Battlestar Galactica remake: filler episode, filler episode, filler episode, action episode! Probably best viewed in mini marathons while drinking and eating pizza with extra red sauce. Ooh, calzones!!! Imagine ripping into a calzone while a zombie munches on some idiot's face. Sweet. Watching week to week is a bit of a strain on the old patience. Action, I need action which is a bit of a strain on their budget and soap opera mentality.

209 Regarding John Carter: there's a weird herd effect with movies. If people read that it's not performing well, then they stay away and go watch the motherfucking Lorax or something. Thereby making it a self-fulfilling prophecy about John Carter not doing well.

Now some of this may be rational decisionmaking: "If nobody else likes it, probably I won't either." But there's also a desire to be on the "winning team" so to speak. "I saw that movie that everyone else saw and liked. I am a member of the tribe."

SOS:

I had been gone for several days and was sorry to read that your beater had been vandalized again. Glad to hear that the night supervisor vandalizing your workspace got the boot AND forfeited her last paycheck.

Sounds like you have made good friends with Wolverine and your new "crew." I think some of the 20-somethings want to be mentored by us old f*cks. The kids at my engineering college are suprised when I tell them I flunked out of college the first time around because I learned to like dark beer too much -- I tell them to learn from my mistakes.

Good luck at work tomorrow. However, I think most of the people that had been causing you trouble are now dreading management linking them to any of the death-threats you had received and will be giving you a wide berth. I think only your beater is going to be vulnerable: you should probably just ask the Managing Director to let you park your car next to the front doors for a couple of weeks while this plays out.

Looking forward to hearing about the future *Adventures of StuckonStupid and His Young Ward, Wolverine.*

It was perceived as a great movie that no one saw. It was a "friendly parody" of sci-fi and comic book tropes, but a pretty coherent one - not like most parody movies which are just skits. In reality it's a bit of a "get it or not" movie, like Big Trouble in Little China. I love the damned movie, in fact I should watch it again soon. It's kind of kooky and goofy but fun. John Lithgow as the nutbag villain is freaking awesome.

I like to go to the Obama-For-America, turd-polishing hashtags, OWS, etc., and stir up shit.

It's also great for links to political commentary and political news that I otherwise might not come across.

And I also greatly enjoy the tweets of those I follow from here!

Saw John Carter and loved it. It could have had better writing in spots, but everything else, including the CGI, was amazing. And people are watching the Lorax instead of this!???? I would watch the sequel if there was any chance there'd be one.

Walking Dead was pretty dang good too. Glad to see one of my favorite characters from the book show up. Lots of zombie killin', too.

I'm heading back to Oklahoma tomorrow to start the new job. The Teenage Son is staying with my parents until the school year is over. That part is gonna be tough, but it'll give me time to find a good apartment and have things set up before he comes over. After the general crap of the last year, things are looking up.

I don't have anything else to add, except that Obama needs to quit getting his history from his college textbooks.

The story was left-wing, Dancing with Wolves, eco-crap, but well-done crap. The extraordinary success of the movie is proof that it was a success as a visual spectacle. It was a well-crafted movie. Which is separate form the content and meaning. It was well-done. Anybody who says otherwise is delusional or just doesn't understand how movies work.

There was no compelling reason to like or to watch Avatar. There was no one to identify with. It was aimed at an adolescent mind and attitude and calculated to try and amuse and amaze with special effects.

I have tried to watch it a couple of times and turned away from after about 5 minutes each time. I've seen boring and dumb movies in my life, but that one is just childish and not entertaining.

In point of fact, it is much like "Titanic", in that it takes what appear to be high production values and attachs a childish story line with unlikable leading characters. I think this is Cameron's basic weakness, in that he is too egotistical to take advice from good screenplay writers in constructing plots and characters.

You have to take Cameron to court to get him to acknowledge the sources he rips off. He could have had full license for a trifling amount by his standards but he cannot stand to admit he isn't chock full of original ideas.

Cameron is a really good 2nd unit director who got swept up by the Peter Principle.

This American experiment is like hell over. If and when we run out of people like SOS and the ones who populate our military, then you can truthfully claim such.

It is my firm belief that the bedrock is yet too solid for the country to fail. Difficult times, surely, but I know in my heart we will prevail. Laugh at me for saying this if you wish, I couldn't care less.

Long ago, I swore an oath to defend my constitution and my country--that oath is as true today as then. Whatever must be done to preserve this country MUST be done.

Going to a movie should be fun and entertaining, but what a 16 year old likes as entertainment might be a bit different than someone over 40 or over 50.

My younger son dragged us to see "I Love You, Man" a few years ago, and I really had a lot of fun watching it. But when a movie deliberately insults your intelligence and values with a poor story and boring , one -dimensional characters while trying to WOW you with special effects, it's just a waste of time.

Buckeroo Banzai was a really silly, campy movie, that had ridiculously poor special effects, yet is was funny and entertaining and witty, because the people who made the movie knew what they were making, and the roles were cast accordingly. It was absurd, it was supposed to be absurd, yet it was funny because they never took themselves too seriously.

356 Ok, so I have established that I can't close with the furry bandit, because Cougars Gaia killing suv is pulled too far forward. Now, I'm pretty accurate with the hawk at fifteen feet or so, and that is about the distance to our friend. So, I decide to give it a go. Yeah, 20-40 vision, no glasses, half drunk, just woke up on an adrenaline dump. I've made better decisions. Would've got 'I'm, but the handle nicked the workbench, and the hawk fluttered harmlessly to rest right next to the intruder. If he had opposable thumbs and could use simple tools, it would've been a hell of a scrap. To be continued...

384 Posted by: yankeefifth at March 18, 2012 11:32 PM (Z9EHQ) Iran needs to be dealt with. Their leaders are comprised of people committed to, in varying degrees, a bona-fide death cult. While the ruling Mullah in charge might not be as zealous (or a 12ther) like Ahmedinejad is, but he still would like to get rid of Israel for the glory of Allah. As for Russia and China, while they might not commit regular military troops for Iran's defense, they may go a long ways towards that. China and Iran already have a quasi-alliance, with China aiding Iran's missile program (that story broke a week or so again). Russia's cooperation with Iran is already well know. This can go wrong in so many ways, but it must be done.

Turkey, which is facing its own constitutional crisis and not faring well is something of a mess too without its western connections. anyway, I do not think everyone is going to want to throw in with the iranians. my bigger worry is what hapens after we take out their nuclear program? does it rally their popluation against the west? do the mullahs strike back with whatever they can muster? do we need to send in ground troops? I am fine with doing something but whatever we do I think it is going to make iraq and afghanistan look easy.

I have little faith in our administration , I have wondered for a while if the troops being there at this time is an advantage to us , honestly i don't know with the mideast having a nervous breakdown at this point, It might be to our advantage that they (other countries)might not be able to mobilize?

on the other hand you might be right, the leaders of said countries could use it to their advanatge to turn the populations anger from them to Israel which has always been what they use to hold their population from coming after themselves.

414 But the raccoon hasn't been back since, so we can call this a draw. Or a no contest. As long as he stays out of my house, I don't much care. Though it would've been cool to pin him to the pegboard. I might have left hi there, you know, like Voltaire said, "pour encouragers les autres". Sorry for the fluked up French, it's been a while.

415 Posted by: yankeefifth at March 18, 2012 11:51 PM (Z9EHQ) Any action against Iran's nuclear program has to involve deposing/killing the ruling Mullahs. This is why the Israelis cannot do it alone. It will be very messy, but the alternative is even worse.

443 anyway, I do not think everyone is going to want to throw in with the iranians. my bigger worry is what hapens after we take out their nuclear program? does it rally their popluation against the west? do the mullahs strike back with whatever they can muster? do we need to send in ground troops? I am fine with doing something but whatever we do I think it is going to make iraq and afghanistan look easy.

1. Who cares if it rallies the Iranian population against the west? Another Muslim country that hates us. Big deal.

2. The mullahs have never retaliated against U.S. or western military action: Operation Praying Mantis in 1988; the 2007 SAS raid into Iran to kill the EFP builders, gun runners, and financiers; the attacks on Iranian "diplomatic convoys" in Baghdad that Petraeus authorized; the accidental shooting down of Iran Air Flight 655 by the U.S. Navy in 1988, and so on.

3. Israel is busily blowing up Iranian nuclear facilities, and the Iranians are trying to hush it up. Two more explosions today. No retaliation, and no ability to stop these attacks.

We're done invading countries. Two carrier battle groups could lay waste to the entire country of Iran if necessary, while the Israelis go in and settle Hezbollah's hash for good. Hezbollah fired 700 state-of-the-art Kornet antitank missiles in the 2006 war. Know how many Israelis tanks they destroyed? Two. And both crews survived.

Iran is nothing. It has no capabilities whatsoever compared to the U.S., Israel, and now the Sunni Arab Gulf states.

Have you reset your router or modem at all recently? Sometime even unplugging it can do that. Or it could have just been something your ISP did. It can happen pretty regularly but usually doesn't.

When polls from the game players run in the 60-40 range of good/bad to 40-60 and all variations between that you have a "controversial" ending. When its running 95-5 (and that's probably being generous) in it being a bad ending then its not controversial. You fucked up.

You should hope that your dedicated fans are nitpicking at plotholes in the game. If they are being critical of just some discrepency in the dialogue between two games then you've done a pretty good job. But I haven't really heard much criticism about the number of Ardat Yakshi that are supposed to be in existence between ME2 and 3.

Unfortunately they're being zip-lips and the vacuum of information is creating monsters in the market. It did not help that the "big review houses" hid the controversy until after a large number of sales happened. The small review groups hit the issue as soon as they had the game, and have gone mostly negative on it. There's something just freaking weird about the whole situation. There's another shoe waiting to drop, but it might not be an interesting shoe.

524 Cross and bed found in Anglo-Saxon grave shed new light on 'dark ages' http://tinyurl.com/6u3c99d "Pectoral crosses from the dawn of Christianity in England, and bed burials - where the body was laid on a real bed, now traced only by its iron supports, centuries after the timber rotted – are both extremely rare. [...] A gold and garnet pectoral cross of such quality, the most beautiful and sophisticated examples of Anglo-Saxon metalwork like the contemporary jewels found in the Staffordshire Hoard or the Sutton Hoo burial, could only have been owned by a member of an aristocratic or even royal family. Only five have been found, one in the coffin of St Cuthbert. In some contemporary pieces the gems came from as far as India, and the gold from melted down coins from Constantinople."

547 RED ALERT -- GENERAL QUARTERS

Some of you may not have heard of this yet because the order was just issued on Friday.

The Manchurian Candidate has struck:

In the name of an undefined "national emergency" and the declared need to prepare Americans to "respond" to the "national defense needs" of the United States, the Obama administration seized authority on Friday, March 16 to commandeer the production, use, and distribution of all resources, public and private, in the country, including agricultural, energy, health, transportation, water, construction, and - just in case something is left out - the catch-all phrase "ALL other materials, services, and facilities."

To do all this, there will be at least TWO new organizations:

The Defense Production Act Committee (DPAC), comprised of the heads of the departments and offices of the Executive Branch; and

The National Defense Executive Reserve (NDER).

Think of the DPAC as the Politburo, and the NDER as Obama's Brown Shirts (his "civilian army").

The actual executive order can be found here: at the White House.gov website, under Press Office, Executive Order National Defense Resources Preparedness.

Don't believe me? Google this: "obama issues executive order martial law march 16"

If we don't raise hell about this and MOVE TO IMPEACH this son of a bitch, we can kiss our Republic goodbye. Focus, people; focus!

Beverly, there were multiple threads on this today. Everyone has heard about it but apparently fewer have heard that it isn't anything new. It's a renewal and update of a document first issued in 1939.

Do you know how long it takes to even get an impeachment up for a vote? The election will have come and gone long before. An impeachment would only be of any use if you were sure Obama was going to get re-elected. But then we'd have to go back and retroactively impeach seventy years of president who all had this power, too.

592 636 So I hear Mass Effect 3 was a piece of shit. Posted by: Robert at March 19, 2012 03:12 AM (4ixH5) The general opinion, with some obvious exceptions, is that about 95% of the game is pretty damned good, but the last 5% tries *real* hard to piss the entire series down its leg. Loose shit the likes of which 4chan has been trying to achieve for years. It's like reading Lord of the Rings and discovering the last ten pages have been ripped out and someone glued in the last ten pages of the graphic novel of The Stranger by Albert Camus. If nothing else, they've created an epic internet meme playground.

Mostly in 1. Well, neither one is like hours of steamy scenes or anything. As far as the ending of 3 - if it was *only* hot blue lesbian scissoring, probably only 40% of the fan base would be pissed, and it would make 1000x as much sense.

Or as someone commented (somewhere on one of the links I posted) they stuck the last five minutes of Inception in as a substitute ending of Die Hard. And, as someone else points out, all of the endings mean Shepard, quite literally, extinguishes more species (and in a quicker time) than the Reapers could ever hope to achieve.

A lot of people believe it's an out-of-hand prank - BW planned a different ending to be released at PAX Friday, but didn't expect the audience to go all Pulp Fiction on them. 670 Good Morning ONT Morons. Oh the joys of TV in 1949. It was much better than it is now. As for TV then vs now, I don't know about 1949 but I do know it was so strict in the mid 50s they would not allow Lucy to be shown pregnant. Actress were also not even allowed to be shown in a bed. And even into the 60s when I Dream of Genie premiered they would not allow Barbara Eden to show her bellybutton.

Since then they have taken a whore pill but it wouldn't bother me as long as they kept the juicer stuff on at later times and there was something actually worth watching. But alas, nether is the case. They think sex with no plot and shitty writing makes a good show. The they wonder why nobody watches their crap anymore.

LOL, I shot a water moccasin on the concrete beside my pool one year. That was so not a pretty sight and it stunk as well. And it was hard washing it off the umbrella and fence.

675 Morning, Vic! Yes, I totally agree. In the 1960's they called TV a "vast wasteland" to jutify public broadcasting for rich people. But just look at what was produced in those days! Compare any old episode of the "Twilight Zone" to modern versions, and the drop off in acting nd writing is appalling. What would the Sixties PBS boosters call today?

676 I have long advocated going to this site and looking at the progression of TV shows down through the ages.

You can see that by the end of the 60s TV was going down hill fast. By the end of 80s it truly was a wasteland.

677 And speaking of TV, just turned off Fox. Simply tired of watching them fellate Mutt.

678 Vic, sooner or later you will need to make peace with Mitt and vote for the guy.

Posted by: CoolCzech at March 19, 2012 02:30 AM (niZvt)

679 No we don't. May hold my nose, vomit, and push the button for him but do not have to make peace. Piss on him.

680 News up.

681 The Obamanation si spending its time and money trashing dead presidents and a small town housewife who isn't running for anything. What does that say about our "front runner" ?

682 I don't why everyone is blaming Obama for the errors in his speech. Someone else wrote it for him and loaded it into the teleprompter. That being said, I would rather have Hayes as President and Obama is a disaster.

683 It's not every day you get to see pictures of people you actually know on a Smart Military Blog. Cool. And no, I'm not talking about Rutherford Badass Hayes, but the UMASS pictures. Class of '00 here.

I think I'll spend my time reminiscing of the good old days of pledging my sorority chugging bottles of Mad Dog 20/20, rather than thinking about the current mess we're in. Hope and Change my fat ass.

684 Oops, missed Robert before he left but if he sees this later:

September 1982, though I'd bet it's online somewhere.

686

Obama is a disaster?

Get back to me when President Obama tanks the economy and starts an unnecessary that kills hundreds of thousands of innocent people.

4 more years. Get some, cowards!

687 Oh I think Obama can be much MORE of a disaster, believe me.

688 Haven't watched any of the Minx videos. Does she ever get naked, or wear a bikini, or something?

689 All I got out of that was that there were career politicians back then as well. Reading "successful political career" has me feeling queasy.
