They Live! 2012 Edition

To see the world as it really is all you have to do is open your eyes. And put on the special sunglasses.

Pro-tip: If someone ever does ask you to put on some special sunglasses, just humor them and do it. Unless of course you enjoy pointless 5 minute fight scenes that end up with  you....putting on the sun glasses.

Oh and always bring enough gum.

Trayvon Martin, Vigilantism, and Standing Your Ground

Okay the short version: George Zimmerman, a self-appointed neighborhood watcher, in Orlando, FL saw 17-year old Trayvon Martin walking through his neighborhood streets one evening. He called the police and reported Trayvon as 'suspicious' but didn't see him commit any crime. As he was talking with the dispatcher he pulled his car over and began to chase the boy and confronted him in someone's yard.

What happened next is unclear but Zimmerman claims he was attacked by Trayvon and felt in danger so he shot him in the chest killing him. It turns out that the boy lived with his father in the neighborhood and had walked to a 7-11 and bought some skittles and was returning home. He was unarmed.

Given Florida's 'Stand Your Ground' statute so far police haven't charged Zimmerman with any crime since he claims he was merely defending himself. But this to me this seems a perversion of the whole idea of CCW and self-defense. 'Stand Your Ground' shouldn't give you license to go around confronting people and then killing them when the confrontation doesn't go your way. That's a recipe for wild west vigilantism.

Law enforcement often fails - that's why people need the tools to defend themselves, and the laws to protect them when they do so. But the proactive aspects of policing, including confronting individuals who seem to be "up to no good," should be left to the professionals. If Trayvon Martin had been approached by an officer who identified himself as such, rather than a strange man who jumped out of an SUV and chased him, he would almost certainly be alive today.

What Invisible Children Was Doing a Few Years Ago

Okay before they released the viral Kony video and before the director went on a nude jack-off spree in the streets of San Diego, they were 'Saving the Children' using their..song and dance moves?!?

Hoooo-ly shit - if you gave them any money, well maybe you should pause, and reflect on where and how your life went off track. This was made in 2006 so they don't even have the 80's as an excuse.

Female Fighters of WWII

Some of the best secret agents of WWII were women since they were able to infiltrate enemy territory without arousing much suspicion. And they were as steely as their male counterparts:

Violette Bushell Szabo was raised in England in a British-French family. In 1940, she married French Foreign Legion officer Etienne Szabo. Two years and one daughter later, Etienne was killed in action, and Violette was determined to avenge his death. In 1943, Violette Szabo was recruited by the British Special Operations Executive (SOE) and trained as a courier.

Her first mission to France was in April of 1944, during which she reorganized a resistance unit, sabotaged roads and bridges, and sent back reports by radio. Szabo was arrested twice, and talked her way out both times. Her second mission in June was just after the D-Day invasion. Szabo parachuted into France, led a local resistance unit in sabotaging German communications, and then encountered a roadblock.

She was arrested and interrogated under torture, but gave up no damaging information. Szabo was transferred several times, ultimately to Ravensbrück concentration camp in Germany in August 1944. Even in captivity, Szabo managed to serve other prisoners, saved at least one spy's life, and planned an escape that was uncovered at the last minute. In January of 1945, she and two other SOE agents were executed by an SS officer. Szabo was posthumously awarded the George Cross and an MBE from Britain, and the Croix de Guerre and Médaille de la Résistance from France.

10 A few things bother me about the politically-correct version of the Trayvon shooting, beyond that for some reason we're now supposed to care more about that than about, oh, this: http://tinyurl.com/889rasg

There's the point that the news has posted li'l Trayvon as a 12-year-old all-American football player, rather than the 240-pound 6'3 19-year-old who went across that neighbourhood which wasn't his. As do many "yoofs", coincidentally around the same time that break-ins go on.

There's the point that the media made such a big deal of the Zimmerman name - ooh, he's a white guy! maybe German! - and it turned out he was Hispanic.

As for the facts of the case, here is a FAQ : http://tinyurl.com/6q2tptl.

The essential elements of self defense are as follows. TM attacked GZ from behind. Witnesses saw TM on top of GZ beating him while he screamed for help. And GZ shot TM once in the chest. Though only 17, TM was a 6Â’3″ football player who posed a credible threat.

Somehow, even if Trayvon were 19 and 240 pounds instead of 17 and 140 lbs and if he really didn't live in the neighborhood, which he did (until he was, you know, shot), it's kind of more important to talk about how the dude who actually did kill someone (rather than just existing at the time in which sometimes, stuff happens) has a history of violence. But really, the kid ran. I'll buy that he fought, after he ran, but Zimmerman would've been 100% safe if he'd stayed in his car and he was clearly the aggressor. Unless he was lawfully defending a bunch of helpless Skittles from being devoured. That may be a good defense. "Your honor, my client is clearly in no way influenced by color. He was acting in defense of red, yellow, and purple Skittles alike."

If you turn off of a main road you can wander for a while before you come across an entrance gate and realize you're on the wrong side of it. This is especially true if you take shortcuts through parking lots (but good teenagers never do that, of course).

Maet,

They aren't using the stand your ground law as a defense. It is just a normal self defense investigation. I say as a defense, the state attorney isn't contemplating charges regarding the stand your ground law.

I don't know the facts of what happened but it sounds like the shooter was in the wrong. If someone came up to me in the middle of the night after following me I would probably shoot them if I had a gun but at least I would try to defend myself which is what it sounds like this kid did.

97 Gentlemen, imagine if you will a Scandinavian could-be-twin of Pamela Anderson...but a talented writer and activist, whose views are summarized thusly: "Herland’s book "Alarm! Reflections on a culture in crisis" set off hefty debate the spring of 2010 and was widely reviewed in Norwegian newspapers, radio and television. The book went into a second printing after only two weeks of sale, and a third printing followed a few months later. Herland maintains that the opposition of cultural radicals from the late sixties (referred to as “the sixty-eights” - a Norwegian popular term describing the radicals of that time) to the setting of limits has ravaged Norwegian schools, destroyed the authority of the police, triggered the breakup of families, curbed the freedom of the church and censored free expression in the public sphere. In Alarm! she uses the phrase “Norwegian tyranny of opinion” frequently and points out that Europe is on the verge of committing cultural suicide. According to Herland, extremely liberal social development over the last decades has spawned self-realization, egoism, and unrestrained sexual activity, ultimately leading to serious and self-destructive dissolution of established norms. Herland believes that it is high time to increase respect for traditional Norwegian culture – for the simple reason that it shows a time-honored ability to sufficiently motivate individuals to solidarity, empathy and compassion for others. She points out that there is no conflict between upholding your own cultural identity and living in an ethnically diverse society, and that European culture should in fact take precedence in Europe. Immigrants should adapt to the prevailing culture in their new countries. In Alarm! Herland emphasizes that faith in God is natural and common throughout the world. She urges people to rebel against hostile actions and negative attitudes towards religion. She goes on to say it must be again permissible to express pride over the, according to her, religiously based ideals of European culture – such as equality between sexes, the ethics of the Ten Commandments and the concept of social solidarity – values which provide the foundation for all of Western Civilization. At a political caucus in Trondheim Herland received attention and was cited in several national newspapers. During the meeting she made the statement, among others, that women’s liberation has created many nasty Norwegian women and that she therefore understands why Norwegian men prefer wives from Russia or Thailand." A fantasy, my friends? A fond day-dream? No, my fellow machistas, this brainy blonde bombshell is all too real, and rare. Gentlemen, submitted for your approval, the one, the only...Prof. Hanne Herland...[Click on the link in my nic for pic]

111 Partial translation of JewishOdysseus' article --

If Norwegian men too little sex and home made food? Voice your opinion at the bottom of the article.

It all began with Hanne Nabintu Herland was speaking at a public meeting organized by Trondheim KrF.

There, it emerged that the controversial religious historian think that there are too many nasty Norwegian women, and that she could well understand that Norwegian men would rather have Russian and Thai wives.

- They like at least good sex and to create food, says Hanne Nabintu Herland.

Many have thrown themselves in the debate, and several newspapers have interviewed Herland to go deeper into what she believes.

Even if TM had been 9' and 450lbs, that still wouldn't make it okay for GZ to confront and then kill him if the fight didn't go his way. Even big guys have the right to self-defense.

He was acting in defense of red, yellow, and purple Skittles alike."

Zimmerman is the one who escalated the incident to that point by pursuing.  That foolish act makes everything else that happened subsequently his responsibility.

Self defense falls apart when you're the one who escalates to the point where it becomes necessary.  All the CCW courses drill this legal dividing line into the student's...repeatedly...nd give real life examples of people going to prison and losing everything for doing exactly the sort of thing Z did.

It's pretty relevant to the Zimmerman thing in that it doesn't happen like that very often. They gathered over 5000 news reports of self defense stories from a 7 year period. Those are a tiny fraction of actual events.

152 A serious question about gated communities---do any of y'all live in one? Are they huge, or is it likely that you walk through one going to your neighborhood store or school? I mentioned before that they weren't gated all the way around where I grew up (El Paso). My brother and I regularly walked through a gated community that we didn't live in when we were kids; the back of the community was up against the back of a shopping center where we bought ice cream and annoyed cashiers and the side of it ran along a major street, and the gates were only at certain parts. It might've been impossible to access by car, but not by foot---we didn't have to even jump any fences just cross an unfenced alley between the shopping center and the houses, and it was definitely the fastest way to get from Dad's house to Furr's.

Well all the objective evidence released so far point is consistent with Zimmerman deciding he didn't like the look of the guy, chasing and confronting him, and getting into a struggle with him.

But if you have some extra information we don't, then share it.

In the FL criminal code, the only difference in "good shooting" criteria between a cop and a citizen is someone fleeing the scene of a forcible felony.

I don't like the judging Zimmerman by thin facts from afar... but is how it ALWAYS happens.  When he goes in front of a jury of his peers, he'll learn his fate.  Then he'll face the civil lawsuits.

Honorable folks who care volunteer to watch out for their neighbors.  There is no reason to suspect the kid except he was offended to say why he was where he was and things escalated.  Point in fact, Z ended up getting his ass kicked and feared for his life.  That's what happens when you kick the ass of a smaller guy (gal) with a gun.  They'll use it.  Why Z ended up where he did is fodder, but it happened.  It is a shame this will be blown into a riot for sure because it serves a purpose for the race-baiters.  No media outrage about black on white violence in KC.  Doesn't serve the meme...

Man shot and killed in neighborhood altercation

Published : Monday, 27 Feb 2012, 4:55 PM EST

SANFORD, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) - Investigators with the Sanford Police Department are still trying to figure out exactly what happened during an altercation which resulted in a fatal shooting in the Twin Lakes area.  The shooting happened just after 7 p.m. Sunday evening on Twin Trees Lane. A man who witnessed part of the altercation contacted authorities.

"The guy on the bottom, who had a red sweater on, was yelling to me, 'Help! Help!' and I told him to stop, and I was calling 911," said the witness, who asked to be identified only by his first name, John.

John said he locked his patio door, ran upstairs and heard at least one gun shot.

"And then, when I got upstairs and looked down, the guy who was on the top beating up the other guy, was the one laying in the grass, and I believe he was dead at that point."

187 "Did the bodyshop guy like his engine?" Ya, he loved it. Got it put in and the damn thing turned over first try - still runs like a top - once they got back from the airport with some gas that is.. lol. It was kind of funny, after they got it put in he says, "I hope you don't mind if I supe it up a bit." I told him, hey, your engine now.. do what you want. But before you try to start it you'd better train the gas tank first and get some new gas. He gave me a strange look, like he didn't want to hurt my feelings or something because I honestly think he though I didn't know what I was talking about. He says, "Well it's got about 1/2 tank in it and the gas in there isn't that old I don't think" Then I explained, "The 302 in there is not a stock Boss 302. Not even close. It came out of my old 1/4 mile sprint track car. She runs at about a 14 1/2 to 1 compression ratio. It won't run on normal gas, the octane level is too low. You need racing fuel or aviation fuel - I usually bought AV Gas for it - bit cheaper. You can get some from the local airport." Poor kid about shit a brick right there.. lol

194 162 A serious question about gated communities---do any of y'all live in one? Are they huge, or is it likely that you walk through one going to your neighborhood store or school?

I don't live in one, but i live near one, it's got a six foot wrought iron fence all the way around it with shrubs planted at the base of them so it won't look so foreboding and two gated entrances, there's no way in except the gates so you wouldn't accidentally walk through it. Once you're inside it's just like any other neighborhood, more uniform than most but nothing that would make you go ooh or ahh, just a neighborhood. In this case i see the need for the fence and gates because this area is a shithole.

Can't even imagine what Av gas costs per gallon today - hell of a lot more than what I'd want so spend. One of the many reasons I never ended putting that particular engine into another car, and well honestly I didn't want to sell it for sentimental reasons. I didn't want some idgit ripping the guts out of it I guess. So this as it turns out was a perfect solution all the way around. It's going to go to someone who really deserves it and really appreciates it. Funny how life just works itself out like that sometimes.

Posted by: StuckOnStupid at March 21, 2012 07:48 PM (R5yLq)

200 I'm a defense lawyer here in FL, and I can say 1 thing to start: police reports are not finely crafted expose's of truth, thoroughness, and detail. But often they're all we've got. A few observations, based on my review of the 2/26/12 police report in the Martin killing: 1) 19:17 that day was quite dark. 2) Zimmerman was 5'9", Martin was 6'. 3) The first narrative on the report is written by Ofc Ricardo Ayala, who described Zimmerman as "a white male." I have reason to believe Ofc. Ricardo Ayala is likely of Hispanic extraction, so it seems pretty funny to accuse him of "RACISM!!11!!" because he mis-ethnicized the subject. The other narrative is written by Ofc. Timothy Smith, who also described Zimmerman as a white male. In fairness to both officers, they didn't report Zim as "white" until after they knew his very Germanic-sounding name, which may have swayed them. 4) Ofc. Smith was 1st on the scene, and said his "close" observation of Zimmerman made it seem as if he had been lying on his back on the grass, his back was wet, and he was bleeding from the nose and the back of his head. Martin was facedown with his hands underneath him. 5) Both officers and EMS made immediate efforts to revive Martin. NOW THE LAW...In Florida, you may make a "citizen's arrest" of another person if you have probable cause they've committed a crime in your presence...BUT YOU CAN'T DETAIN THEM AT ALL OTHERWISE. If Zimmerman drew down on Martin to "hold him there until the cops arrived," he committed a crime, and a huge civil tort. BUT...Just like Martin is free to walk thru any public neighborhood he likes, so Zim is FREE TO FOLLOW Martin if he likes. This is where the story behind the story comes in, and I can only speculate a few scenarios: 1) Martin really is casing the hood, gets paranoid/pissed off at Zim, confronts him, mouths off, then decides to teach Zim a lesson. However, Zim is only entitled to use DEADLY FORCE if he is in reasonable fear of death or great bodily harm. An iced tea bottle acrost the head? Hmmmm, may be enough... 2) Zim chases Martin, draws down on him to hold him there, Martin goes after him, Zim shoots...AT LEAST manslaughter there. 3) Martin is NOT casing the hood, but he still gets pissed off by Zim following him, mouths off...SAME RESULT AS 1, even tho Martin is more innocent. 4) Zim chases Martin, tells him to stop, Martin keeps walking, Zim grabs him, Martin responds and gets the best of Zim, Zim shoots him...SAME RESULT AS 2, even tho Zim is more restrained. BIG LESSON HERE: Even potential crooks are entitled to walk the streets of Florida at night, without interference from private citizens, unless you the citizen has PROBABLE CAUSE that they've committed a crime (this of course usually means you see them commit it!). They call it "neighborhood WATCH," not "neighborhood DETENTION."

A serious question about gated communities---do any of y'all live in
one? Are they huge, or is it likely that you walk through one going to
your neighborhood store or school?

Lived in one for a while. Six foot iron fence and gates controlled by electronic opener or key for pedestrian gate. Nice community, but usually the streetpunks just climbed over the fence to take shortcuts to get somewhere else usually leaving their trash all over the place. And the security guards were a joke.

Nothing special. Gated subdivision - very small - the townhouse variety. Fairly new mediocre construction, different views from the aerial shots show construction. Each homeowner owns the strip of grass in front and back of the unit. Streets are owned by the residents (not public).

For some reason Zwillow shows it as being high-crime.

Of course the big problem for the prosecution is that there is no such recording. There is a recording of a dispatcher saying "We don't need you to do that" when Zimmerman indicates that he's going to follow. A long way off from an order.

256 John said he locked his patio door, ran upstairs and heard at least one gun shot.

What a hero.

Let's have a show of hands: How many people here have ever had someone try to murder you with a gun? I have. Christmas Eve, 1997, in the parking lot of my bookstore. The weapon was a Tec-9 with a 32-round clip and a perforated barrel extension. Apparently it jammed.

Knowing that I was about to be murdered was without question the worst moment of my life, and it threw my mind into chaos. When the gun was jammed in my face from about three inches away and the guy screamed, "Don't fuck with me, man!" I head a voice in my head say as clearly as a recorded announcement, "Time to die."

I immediately turned and ran, and my head was filled with images of fireworks, pajamas, Nazis, beaches, pies--it was as though everything I'd ever thought of was passing through my mind. I heard a slow countdown: "Ten. Nine. Eight. Seven..." and I knew when it reached "One," I would be shot in the back of the head. A tiny spot on the base of my skull the size of a dime became super-sensitized, and I knew that was where the bullet would hit.

I knew it would explode out my face, and I'd see my teeth and brains spraying out in front of me, and I'd feel the cold night air rushing into the hole in my head, stinging the rawness; then I'd fall face first into the asphalt and scrape my palms, chin, and knees, and then I'd die. I was pre-experiencing it, is the best way to describe that knowledge.

An airliner flew overhead, and I constructed an entire scenario in which I was whisked up into it, away from the gunman, and lived the rest of my life in peace. It was just like the Ambrose Bierce short story "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge." I imagined getting away, landing at LAX, meeting my family, and going home for Christmas dinner.

All of this happened in less than four seconds, as far as I can figure. I was running toward the other side of the street but remembered my brother and ran around the truck we were unloading because I couldn't leave him behind, and he collided with me at the front of the store. We managed to get inside and shut the steel door. My brother told me that the gunman took off after me but stopped because he didn't look like he could run. My brother and I are exercise fanatics.

I knew for sure I was about to be murdered, and it was far worse than I ever could've imagined. It was unmitigated horror, loneliness, and the absolute depths of sadness. I've never been so fucking sad. Unless you've experienced it, you have no clue what you're talking about.

If you are on your back getting your ass kicked .. does it matter if the other guy has a gun?  No.  You have no way to know that the next punch to your face isn't going to be followed by twelve more until you are beaten to death.

Object lessons here for all to learn.  Mistakes all around.  I'm sure Zimmerman will regret ever volunteering to watch the neighborhood or carry a gun for the rest of his life.  Taking a life for normal people is a very tramatic experience.  I'm sorry for what happened, but the kid had just as much ability to de-escalate the situation as Zimmerman did.  It's a two-way street.

281 RMoney, I'm sure there have been plenty of deaths by pure beating--I've seen a few on the news here-- but the law states that, to justify use of DEADLY force in self-defense, the person must be REASONABLY in fear of death or serious bodily injury to themselves. So I'd say with no evidence of even a crude "real" weapon like a rock or a club in Martin's possession, this defense argument is a little weak...But the iced tea bottle makes a difference, esp.in the dark.

291 Oh, and one more thing. I feel sorry for both sides.

Having been accused of trying to make it a racial issue when I described the man who cut my clothes off of me with a machete as having a Spanish accent and an Our Lady of Guadalupe tattoo, I am especially sensitive to the people who are trying to make this a racial issue.

Having lived in the actual hood (Lynwood CA) I am also extremely sympathetic towards people who have good reason to be fed up young minority males acting badly. ( I will also add that I never had a lick of trouble with any of the guys in our neighborhood and they were in fact very nice to me. But overall, it's a vicious, vicious way of life )

But if Mr Zimmerman did in fact run after the kid, I think at the very least he's gonna be in a world of hurt in civil court.

And you'll jump him and start beating him up, right?

We've got the one neighbor who said the shooter was getting beaten up on the ground. We've got a body. And we've got the usual conflicting stories that arise spontaneously when anything is remembered.

And we've got this system where 12 local people try to trace their way through all the baffling inconsistencies and decide what's right. They get information we won't, they know the area better than we do, and they will get specific instruction over distinctions made under local laws. We won't. Trying to force-feed this into any narrative is counterproductive.

301 >>>First degree Manslaughter at best.

There is a credible case for murder 2.
If the kid ran and was chased at faster than a walk, then the kid had a right to assume ill will and act in self defense himself. That makes the confrontation the sole responsibility of Zimmerman, and therefore the intent to kill not excused by self defense and therefore criminal while not premeditated.

Murder 2.

Dude, doesn't Taylor have the right to defend himself?  He's being followed in a fucking car.  Driver gets out -- it's not the captain of the local cheerleading team, and he starts to tail Martin.  Martin didn't start the chase and he apparently felt he had to either make a stand or get waxed.  This is absurd.  Don't defend Zimmerman because you fear he'll be the poster child for eviscerating the 2nd Amendment.  Zimmerman went looking for a bad situation, he found it, and a 17 year old kid is dead as a result.

I have had a few instances where things got really dicey for a few moments but the fact that I was conscious of the approaching people and was able to shift my stance and indicate awareness and preparedness likely resulted in a non event. I would never turn around and seek to close with or otherwise cause or increase the likelihood of a confrontation. 327 Llarry, your experience is awful to read... All the mental stuff you mentioned I remember so clearly... I imagined one of them ending my life, and these were cops.. not criminals. It was sobering and after I was cuffed and frisked , they figured out it was a false alarm , I was let go and they said sorry. I about shit my pants.

In police dash-cam videos, you see cops themselves screaming in total terror when someone tries to murder them. And those are trained, experienced law-enforcement personnel.

The only people who don't seem to lose their minds are soldiers who engage in close-quarter combat on a regular basis. For the rest of us, the experience is simply too horrible to tolerate.

I had flashbacks for years. A thuggish kid would walk toward me in a certain bouncy way or speak in a certain tone of voice with a Latino accent, and I'd suddenly find myself running blindly. Once I dove headfirst into bushes before I knew I was going to do it, scaring the hell out of the kid walking toward me.

"Don't do that, mister!" he wailed at me. "I don't mess with nobody!"  He was almost in tears.

Well, I certainly appreciate life much more than I did before. And I always listen to the little voice in my head now. I've had days in which I'm about to go shopping, and that little voice says, "Don't go out." So I don't.

I knew when I saw the car idling in the parking lot that night that it was trouble, but I ignored it and was almost murdered. We found out later it was an attempted insurance scam on the part of the bookstore owner, who planned to have my brother and me killed and the truckload of books stolen so he could make a bogus claim that they were rare first editions. He was in debt up to his ears.

He died soon afterward, so no charges were ever filed. My brother and I saved his store by putting it in order because he was old and crippled by diabetes, and in return he tried to have us murdered.

That still gets to me.

He had a right to transit that property to reach a destination where he had a right to be like anyone else who actually lived there. You can't claim private property unless it was Zimmermans yard or home, you can't claim even the street in front of his yard, even if he legally owned it.

I know folks are a little rough on property transit rules. But yes you do have a right to transit private property on all assumed easements.

All of that latter part is as good as a warm bucket of spit.

You've got a unarmed dead kid, and an armed shooter who was in no way authorized to shoot in the commission of his duties.

Zimmer is done.

361 Husband's mid life, Jerry. Seems to be getting irrationally jealous. We have had a few instances over the last year, and the most recent one is my crush on Tim Tebow.

I mean seriously.

But he's 55 now and I was just wondering if it's that. He really seems to be irked by younger men.

***********************

The case that I'd still probably have a tsroke over if I read the details again is the black guy on Long Island who had a bunch of drunken white guys come over to his house screaming and yelling about killing him and raping his wife and young daughter, and they get up on his driveway and he shot one of them and HE goes to prison. I still can't believe that man is in jail.

Maybe he got out on appeal, but I get pissed every time I think about it.

362 There are dozens of fairly recent examples of people being killed by single punches in the news. Heck, I can even remember stories of people having to register their hands as lethal weapons due to martial arts training -- I dunno, maybe that is just Hollywood BS or an urban legend but still I've heard of it. (note: I just looked it up and yeah it's an urban legend)

Then there is that new game being played called "knock-out punch". A couple of deaths have resulted from this "game". Here is an American Thinker article on it from yesterday:

http://tinyurl.com/3kcx96p

Still, Zimmerman has trouble coming his way and he's earned it. How much trouble I can't say. Just today or yesterday a MS white boy pled guilty to 1st degree murder for killing a black man. He had earlier declared he was going to go hunt one, then bragged about it afterwards. He got a life sentence but I think he got off easy.

I still can't get over the fact that people think it's acceptible to run away when a neighbor screams for help.

By all means, call 911.

But to lock yourself inside your house?  No.  Couldn't do that.

I'm not discounting the inherit danger, but if you can help you should.  By locking yourself in your house, you are not helping anyone but yourself.

The presence of a third individual would have altered the dynamic.

Sufficient to change the outcome?  Hard to say.   But even a flashlight and a commanding voice can bring a stop to an assault.

We're working with a local museum to celebrate the impact they have had on our local economy. Because, everyone knows it takes dozens of failure to make the one success that makes a difference.

372 "He had a right to transit that property to reach a destination where he had a right to be like anyone else who actually lived there."

Well, I guess you have to drill into the actual local law for that, but given the fact that it is a gated subdivision and that Martin was not a resident he had no legal 'right' to be there at all.

As a 'guest' he may have had some privileges to the common areas (may vary whether escorted or not ).

Making a beeline across other front and back yards - no right at all... or Zimmer.

382 Maet:

1. unless you were there, the only information you have is at best been filtered by those with an interest in the circumstances being seen in a certain light

2. unless you've ever been in a confrontation or personal combat, you have no idea how quickly things can go bad. nor how those who's adrenaline is up can react to even something innocuous (or smart alecky).

3. the 911 tapes aired may or may not be complete. they may or may not have been edited by the police or the party airing them. plus without knowledge of who is making what sounds you cannot base a fair opinion on them.

4. that the police initially did not arrest mr. zimmerman is indicative that no indications were patently obvious AT THE TIME. this could mean that because mr. zimmerman had sustained injuries and had a past positive history they gave him the benefit of the doubt because they knew they could find him again. OR the "innocent" teenager showed indications that he had been doing something suspicious OR that he had a previous record (that record can't be acknowledged publicly by official spokes persons as he's underage)

5. I have rarely seen a relative of a criminal teen ever admit to the authorities or the media (or had it reported) that the teen was a criminal and was at fault. they're always "he's never done anything bad" "he's a good boy" he's never been in trouble with the law" et cetera, et cetera.

Let the law do it's job. yes even the racist doj should be allowed to do their investigation even though it appears to be pandering to all those who have jumped to conclusions based on nothing more than hearsay and circumstantial reports.

1. Unless their is some sort of draconian HOA, guests have full transit rights. If they don't the HOA has to take responsibility for enforcing those rules policing with uniform security, not some neighborhood watch guy.

>>>Making a beeline across other front and back yards - no right at all... or Zimmer.

2. And if he was confronted by one of those property owners the situation would be different. As he was confronted by a third party it is the same situation as if he was on a public street.

OK - You morons - real property ownership is readily available in the county GIS (waste a minute of your lives and look something up... or just keep reading the MFM) - the streets in this subdivison are privately owned by the residents.

Martin was not a resident.

I don't know about you, but now I definitely think it's fair to say that Treyvon likely lived in the neighborhood even if he didn't live in the subdivision, the same way my brother and I regularly walked through a subdivision/community that we didn't live in, without leaving our neighborhood. And I'm still not clear on whether Trayvon had a home (his father's) in the subdivision. Or that it even matters...but clearly, even if Zimmerman knew everyone in the subdivision (which I doubt), it's not such a large subdivision that you shouldn't expect people from the rest of the area to walk through it.

Well, if it was "fuck" we would know that it is a noun, verb, adjective, adverb, and just about everything else that can be defined as a part of english.

Adj.  The gallupized man could not refrain from forming an immediate opinion about a foreign war in a country he had never visited and did not know anything about involving people he had never met and did not know by reputation.

verb.  The crowd brutally gallupized the man who attempted to refuse to form an opinion about global warming because he had never taken an applicable math or science class of any kind.

I am trying to work out the details of a harsher version, which would be -- "Gallupficated."

No one expects the Spanish Inquisition, and no one ever wants to be gallupficated.

Especially not while carrying. Posted by: Hollowpoint at March 22, 2012 02:17 AM (75ggp) Hey, I am not trying to advocate for zimmerman. whatever transpired he clearly is not the sharpest tool in the gated community or he would have managed things in a way that did not require him to have to shoot a guy, go into hiding and be on the wrong end of a date with eric holder and his goons. my concern is that there is a concerted effort, indeed perhaps even a coordinated effort, by the media, the obama administration, and the rest of the left to rally around this and make it into something to motivate their base. the people who are leading the rally in nyc are the usual collection of bad actor grievance mongers. I believe the most likely explanation is you had two idiots get in a fight and one of them got shot. they were probably both partially responsible and it is not clear that one or the other was clearly in the wrong. the fact that one of the two got shot does not necessarily mean the shooter was wrong, or wrong enough to go to jail. I also find it difficult that whatshisname was just a pillar of the community who happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. I am also concerned that giving any credence to the meme that this is an indication or racism is only going to make things worse and is likely false.

If this shooting is being politicized (and it is) it's because some idiot decided to go all Charles Bronson and end up shooting a kid. Blame him. As a side note- NOT directed at you- it's really fucking annoying to try and battle accusations that conservatives are racist for no reason other than being conservative on one hand, then have douchetools show up in every damned thread remotely related to race who go out of their way to give them ammo.

522 A nongallupficated society would respond to a Gallup poll like this:

40% -- I really just don't give a shit.

51%  -- I care, but I haven't had time to study the facts and context yet, so I just don't know yet.

5% -- I took an immediate interest in the issue and I have spent over ___ hours studying.  I have a preliminary opinion that could improve with additional input.

3.8% -- This issue is in my professional field and I can offer a professional opinion, however, my opinion would improve with additional study of the facts and context.

0.2% -- I actually saw it happen.  My opinion is fixed in place because I know what I saw.

Posted by: Soona at March 21, 2012 11:17 PM (ij7tA)

546 538 @498 yankee- One can believe that this incident wasn't necessarily motivated by race (though we don't know it wasn't) while also believing that the shooter was in the wrong. Why do you find it difficult to believe that the kid wasn't up to no good? If this shooting is being politicized (and it is) it's because some idiot decided to go all Charles Bronson and end up shooting a kid. Blame him. As a side note- NOT directed at you- it's really fucking annoying to try and battle accusations that conservatives are racist for no reason other than being conservative on one hand, then have douchetools show up in every damned thread remotely related to race who go out of their way to give them ammo. Posted by: Hollowpoint at March 22, 2012 02:57 AM (75ggp) Rumsfeld said he was always willing to have a conversation with people that were willing to be persuaded by reason and the force of logic. I like that there are many of those people around here and like to consider myself one of them - I believe you are as well. I believe the most likely scenario is that z was following the other guy. the other guy turned to confront him at some point, a fight broke out, the little guy was on the receiving end of a lesson or was about to be and shot the other guy. That being said I do not claim to know this and I am willing to accept I am wrong and replace that with the truth. That is my best guess from what I have read so far. I do believe the police would have arrested z if they believed he had done something wrong or if the other guy was clearly blameless. I am very concerned that the meme that is taking hold, based on no more information than I have is that an injustice was committed - which necessarily requires that the other guy was innocent and z was wrong. conceding the imperfection of the police they have had access to more information than anyone and apparently concluded there were no grounds to arrest z. the position put forth in the media requires z and the police, and the da to all be bad actors and the other guy to be an innocent victim. I believe it is possible the other guy was up to no good. I do not believe it was necessary for the result that he was.

And, during those years when a guy could pop lots of times within a few hours each one would make it more and more tender until is was way oversensitive.  Peeing the next day was always an adventure.  Some of it was in the 'hurts so good' category, but hurt is a real statement, not just some BS.

604 How do you get the skin broken on the back of your head and you end bleeding in a fight.? 1. Someone sucker punched you. You then end up with grass stains on your back and a bloody nose. Consistent with being held down in the grass and beaten. The 30 seconds of screaming on the 911 tape fits this as well. You then shoot the person. 2. Someone knocked you to the ground and you hit your head on the curb . Hitting a curb wouldn't cause grass stains on your coat. Being beaten on the ground would. 3.Someone knocked you to the ground and your head hits a sprinkler. You then shoot the person after screaming for 30 seconds. Review the police report and tell me which one best fits the police report.

737 Okay, I have a conundrum. My next-door-neighbor has decided to sell his home. His first wife died a few years ago, he re-married, and she has a home also. Do I do what I can to maximize his property value? If I do, my property value will go up and allow me to borrow more money to play in the market, but my property taxes will rise. If I don't, my taxes will rise at a slower rate, but my ability to use it as an asset (second mortgage, reverse mortgage, etc.) will be diminished. He has been a good neighbor for the most part, but could have been less of a PITA (IYKWIM). For now, I plan on staying in my oversized house (empty nest, seven kids at one time). I bring this up, because my place could use a little sprucing up, and am wondering if spending the money before of after the sale of his property makes more sense. So, do I go with my heart or go with my head? I've always been a reap/sow, "get what you give" kinda guy. Anyway, thanks in advance for the input.

Analyze your choices based on what will give you the most flexibility going forward.  If cash hording will give you flexibility, do that.  If cash investment will give you more flexibility, do that instead.

As a general rule, never put money in a car you are going to sell.  For houses, a little money helps if it makes for curb appeal, but there is a very sharp line where the law of diminishing returns starts to take over.

748 Good Morning ONT Morons.  On the FL neighborhood watch shooting the 17 y.o. did not "live", he was visiting his father. And I call for the one week delay rule.  There is a lot of shit being thrown back and forth on this case and we do not yet know the whole picture.

To me this has the Duke Witch Hunt flavor to it. Lets see what the real investigation turns up here first.  We also need to keep in mind the MFM has two targets here, first they love to make a big deal out of any time a "white" kills a black (note Hispanics are not a minority when they kill a black) and second, they hate some anti-gun control laws.  They are attacking both here.

We may find that this "neighborhood watch guy acted inappropriately and should be charged, but lets get the whole story before we go all "Duke" on it.

754 . For houses, a little money helps if it makes for curb appeal, but there is a very sharp line where the law of diminishing returns starts to take over. Posted by: jc at March 22, 2012 05:37 AM (ufJKx) As I see it now, most improvements we really need (if we were selling) would be of the internal variety (hence, no curb appeal.) We have always tried to make our home attractive, just because that's the way we were raised. So, I think we'll plant the flowers and paint over any obvious flaws, do our duty to an otherwise good neighbor, and hope for the best. Thanks.

Posted by: bergerbilder at March 22, 2012 02:00 AM (j+Izh)

755 What I have always seen for money spent to help sell a house:

Number 1 priority paint and repairs.
Number 2 new carpet if the exiting carpet is aged.
Number 3 small improvements in the kitchen and bathroom
Number 4 landscaping if you do it yourself.  This gets them in the house to look but doesn't increase the price.

Most everything else is a waste of money. What sells a house is still 3 things, location, location, location.

785 I have a concealed carry permit in Florida, and when you apply for it the Department of Agriculture (the licensing authority) sends you a copy of the regulations and explanations in layman's terms. You are not allowed to act like a cop. You are not allowed to engage people unless you see a forcible felony being committed or about to be committed. A forcible felony is burglary of an occupied dwelling, rape, assault where you are at risk of GREAT bodily harm (nosebleeds don't count), kidnapping, carjacking. That's it. The good news is that when you get your Concealed Carry License it is signed and endorsed by none other than Charles Bronson himself. The Commisioner of Agriculture, until recently, was a mild-mannered man with the improbable name Charles Bronson.

'Stand Your Ground' shouldn't give you license to go around confronting people and then killing them when the confrontation doesn't go your way.

I'm pretty sure the initiater of confrontation doesn't get to claim that they're entitled to 'Stand Your Ground' protection. If anyone should be able to invoke the SYG rights, it would be Trayvon Martin, since he was the one confronted, and should have had an imminent fear for his life.

789 120   If the Martin-Zimmerman case ever goes to trial I think that a lot of people are going to learn a hard lesson about discretion being the better part of valor.

If Zimmerman is charged any half decent defense attorney will be able to get a change of venue, plus God knows what else, thanks to the incessant media coverage. The case is being tried by CNN.

*
*
I keep hearing that the Martin kid was an "honor student" (though the media trots that out for any kid with a pulse).  If so, what was he doing running the streets, Skittles or not, that late?  He should have been home in bed.  And when accosted by Zimmerman, he should have been polite, told the neighborhood watchman, "I live right over there; my dad'll vouch for me," and taken him up to the house to prove it.  Problem solved.

The MSM keeps lying like Persian rugs, too, showing pics of Trayvon at age 13 to make everyone think a child's been shot.  He was 17, 6'3" compared to Zimmerman's 5'2", and on the football team at school -- not some little munchkin.

793 "I'm pretty sure the initiater of confrontation doesn't get to claim that they're entitled to 'Stand Your Ground' protection. If anyone should be able to invoke the SYG rights, it would be Trayvon Martin, since he was the one confronted, and should have had an imminent fear for his life."

Whose ground do you think Martin was standing on anyway?

If I catch some a-hole hanging in my front yard and confront him, that makes me the bad guy.
