The Geography of Government Benefits
Sadly these days we all suckle off the Federal teat to some degree or other:
The share of Americans' income that comes from government benefit programs, like Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security, more than doubled over the last four decades, rising from 8 percent in 1969 to 18 percent in 2009.
But the percentage of our income that comes from the government does vary quite a bit by state and county as this interactive map from the NYT shows. Here it lumps together all checks coming from the government but you can also break it down by individual benefits.
The average is around 18% but in some counties the percentage rises to nearly 50%. And note that this is just income - pork and federal grants to state and local government aren't included.
With #OWS It's Always About The Poop
Police said that on evening of March 14, a number of Occupy demonstrators dragged large quantities of human urine and feces in containers to an open-air plaza before pouring the waste down a flight of stairs.Police said Amos is the registered owner of the van. He was charged with criminal possession of a weapon after a stun gun was recovered inside his vehicle.
...Amos also faces charges including unlawful possession of a noxious matter and aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.
Wait - it's illegal to have a van full of piss and poop? Okay morons take note of this when you're emptying out the shitter or out marking your territory.
Another Narcissistic Lie of Obama's
Obama is continually whining about how "he inherited the worst economy since the Great Depression". But that's just not so.
Reagan had it far worse when he took office in 1981. But he actually did things to help the economy and didn't look for pity.
In his superb biography of the Reagan presidency The Age of Reagan, Steven Hayward reminds us that the nation's economic conditions "began slipping toward near panic in the two weeks after the 1980 election."Prime interest rates were around 19 percent. Inflation was in double digits, with forecasts that food prices would rise by more than 10 percent in the coming year and energy prices by 20-40 percent. Unemployment stood at 7.4 percent (it would eventually rise to 10.8 percent in the early years of Reagan's presidency). Housing starts were in free fall. And auto sales were down 10 percent from the previous year.
Samsung Introduces the 'Big Brother' Television
Uh WTF was Samsung thinking when they designed this?
Straight out of 1984, Samsung has unveiled a new series of televisions with integrated cameras and microphones, complete with facial and voice recognition software. Best of all, there appears to be no physical indication of the mic and camera's status, so consumers have no way of knowing when they're being monitored, or by whom... and if you don't find the idea of a TV that watches you creepy enough, apparently Samsung's Terms of Service include a clause allowing third-party apps to make use of the monitoring system, and use the data gathered for their own purposes.
It may be old-skool but it's not dead - and in fact has more traffic than ever. And there's a good reason for that:
Whatever your download activities may be there's no arguing that Usenet is consistently faster and more secure than BitTorrent for sharing files. With the right software and services there's no chance of anyone listening in and your download rates will be as fast as your Internet connection can handle.
Yet Another Reason to Hate on TPM
Even the light saber battles were poorly done.
Can you solve them? And have you ever noticed that raykon sounds a lot like Gollum?
The thing all things devours; Birds, beasts, trees, flowers; Gnaws Iron, bites steel; Grinds hard stones to meal; Slays King, ruins town, and beats high mountain down.
Alive without breath, as cold as death; Never thirsty, ever drinking, all in mail never clinking.
It cannot be seen, it cannot be felt. Cannot be heard, cannot be smelt. It lies behind stars and under hills, and empty holes it fills. It comes first and follows after. Ends life, kills laughter.
A box without hinges, key or lid. Yet golden treasure inside is hid.
Push-Up Bras Boost Your Bust And Bust Out Your Best
It is no mystery that men are given a boost by the effects a push-up bra has on the cleavage. But what is more surprising is the effect a boosted cleavage can have on the woman herself.
...Professor Beattie and his team analysed the three key micro-behaviours associated with confidence and observed their frequency within the recordings.
Smiling - which represents positive emotion and signals confidence increased dramatically by 73 per cent when the women were wearing a push up bra.
Averting gaze and breaking eye contact - normally associated with low confidence - decreased by 41 per cent.
...Professor of Psychology at The University of Manchester Geoff Beattie called the results 'striking' and 'uplifting'.
Yahoo group. That is all.

I would bet that a lot of those darkly colored counties shown on the map are actually rather thinly populated. One of the poorest counties in Ohio, Adams county, where I have family relations, has a lower population than the town that I live in that is a suburb of Columbus.
Especially in northern Michigan and northern Maine. In total numbers, there are probably more people on some kind of government assistance in NY City, but there are 8 or 9 million people in the 5 burroughs of NYC. There might not be 50,000 people in all those northern counties of Michigan or Maine.

Nor do I begrudge the quadriplegic vet who lives up the road from us his Disablity check, nor my 88 year old great aunt who is living on her $400 a month WWII widow's benefit.

We do seem to be on the verge of a serious cultural fracturing between those who will and those who won't. As our buddies Gabe and Monty frequently (or used to, at least regarding the latter) have pointed out, money that can't be paid out will not be. Those who value work as a good in and of itself are dwindling in numbers, while those who would live off the workers are increasing. The system, as it exists, will not hold much longer. What comes after is a mystery, except that it will not be easy, nor pretty.

I actually don't believe this is true. Of the 80 guys who will be wearing a Jets uniform when training camp opens, Tebow's the one they're worried about? That guy could live in an apartment between an opium den and an underground fight club, with Charlie Sheen and Tara Reid as roommates, and in two weeks, he'd have the whole floor coming over to watch "Little House on the Prairie" and sing "This Little Light of Mine."

I thought that was hilarious.

Speaking as a carry permit holder, I'm not ready to rally around Zimmerman. If more facts come out through the judicial process, I may change that stance, but it sure looks like he chased down an unarmed kid and shot him, and I haven't seen an account of a solid investigation at the scene that would discount that (of course, since there wasn't a solid investigation at the scene, evidence exonerating Zimmerman is probably lost as well). I could give a rip what words he said in the process of the altercation, in spite of the Feds' focus on the audio. My only hope is that justice is served independent of the emotional, racial, or political causes and groups that are so invested in the case.

And really, they've probably been in the exact same situation of walking into the elevator that stinks and then get joined by someone else on another floor. Or else they have been the one to let 'er rip in the elevator before getting off to stick someone like you with the smell. So you know, don't worry about it.

It's more conveluted than that. Oldest daughter is signing a Contemporary Christian song for the Fine Arts festival for our denomination. She was cruising YouTube to see if they had any examples and happened across the channel of Captainvalor who signs songs by Jonathan Coulton, the guy who wrote the Portal end song. When my daughter starts doing independent research I want to encourage that, so the game is her reward (as soon as she turns in her paper on Coulton and his songs that I assigned her
)

No dog eats bananas. They think they want to. So you break off a little piece for your dog.
The dog accepts it, eagerly, then gets this really peculiar look on its little doggy face, swallows bravely, then (not in English, obviously, but all dog owners know what I mean) says, "No, not that! The other thing your eating that smells so good!"

The point I tried to make is that if the man broke the law, justice should be served. The usual suspects will get all exercised about the semi-racial aspect (I say semi as he's only half caucasian, but that is easily ignored in favor of the narrative), but that should be immaterial. A man was shot, another man pulled the trigger. Independent of all the clamoring and outrage, the breast-beating and rending of clothes, was it a clean shoot, or is Zimmerman due some time for his actions? Based on what reporting there has been, it certainly appears he did far more than stand his ground. The grand jury will have to decide whether or not that was actually the case, and I hope they do it based on factual evidence, and not emotion or other community pressures. As far as all the other outrages you mention, they shouldn't matter in the slightest in this case. They may in fact be outrageous, and under-reported, etc., but they should not have any bearing in the proceedings of Zimmerman's case.

Walking her on the sidewalk, if we stopped to chat up someone chewing gum, she would harass them until they gave it up to her, then she'd chew on it for a good long while before swallowing. God love her, she was the finest kind of dog.

No his toenails are trimmed. He was afraid of the tile floor when we got him as a puppy. Our old house had a doggy door from the garage to the kitchen, and he would put his head through the door and whine because it was a big kitchen that was tiled, he would not come through for nothing.

between here and my destination, will that person think that I, Peaches,
am all stinky or farting or worse?
It could just be the elevator shaft. I worked on a rehab in NYC and the elevator died on us. Climbed up thru the hatch trying to get the door above opened. Good Lord, the stink was overpowering! Dead pigeons and rodents, grease that had come off the cables and petrified on the roof of the car (I think the old grease smelled worse than the carcasses). This was lower Manhattan, right where the bull they show on the financial programs is situated. I'd suggest asking a maintenance person to clean up those areas, but good luck with that!
Are you sure you didn't really fart in there?? Come on, fess up......we won't tell.

My guess is the truth of it lies somewhere in the middle, the man is neither the hero that some sources are trying to make him out to be nor is he the villain that other sources are attempting to portray.
But for now I'm happy to reserve judgement and wait for at least most of the facts to come to light.
Posted by: StuckOnStupid at March 22, 2012 11:44 PM (R5yLq)
One of the issues at hand is that the police didn't screen Zimmerman for drugs or alcohol, which seems to be a sticking point for the commentariat on many of the carry / Pro-2A forums. The other thing which is coming up is that the detective sent to the scene was from narcotics, as opposed to homicide. Not being a cop, I cannot evaluate the significance of that, but certainly nationally, 2A activists don't seem too happy about that. There is a fear among the pro-gun activists, especially carry permit advocates, that they will be painted with the "vigilante" brush should Zimmerman go down. I share that apprehension, but I'd prefer to be painted as some kind of militia nutjob because I own and carry a gun (it wouldn't be the first time, after all, even though I've never met any of those weirdos) than see an innocent man railroaded in service to public attitudes and a need for racial piety. If he's innocent, he should walk. If evidence says otherwise, he should pay. Here's hoping blind justice still exists somewhere, yes?

So all I gathered from that Star Wars video is that choreographed fight scenes are choreographed. Shocka!
Actually that's a problem with most fight scenes in most films these day. When you want to see a fight that looks raw, brutal and that looks like it hurts you get a lot of whirly twirly dance moves when it would be more satisfying to see one guy punch another guy hard in the face.
Don't get me wrong, choreographed karate moves can have their place, but it seems it has been the dominant trend for way too long.
And wire-fu. Man, I freakin' hate wire-fu.

My problem with it is that it is "blank slate" propaganda. The first half makes the argument that a hobo off the street could be cleaned up and put to work in a trading firm just as easily as some nerd trained for that all his life.

See, I don't think so, because it makes it perfectly clear at the beginning that Billy Ray is not your ordinary run of the mill bum. He has brains and really wants to get ahead, but he doesn't want to work and the point is that the rich farts don't really WORK work, they just sit around and make their big money get bigger.
I think they probably have a good argument there--the best way to make a million is to start with 10 million, after all.

First you spread a big tarp around the base of the olive tree. Then a guy drives a specialized thing looks like an all terrain vehicle, only it has a tool on it that grasps the trunk of the tree. Then they make it vibrate like crazy and all of the olives fall down on to the tarp.
I could watch it all day. OK, maybe for like a half an hour or so.

Mainly Saturn and the ice giants past Saturn. Anyway they are volatile-heavy because they are very cold, and the free oxygen long ago got caught into CO2. They don't create methane so much as still have the methane they had from the start of the Solar System.
Water is a rock around Titan and the rain is ethane. I remember reading that as a child and thinking, good lord, that's cold

Thank you for your thoughtful answer. But that really only backs the question up another step. If true, then where did that methane come from?
It seems highly implausible that we've been extracting 40-70 million barrels PER DAY for years now, and we're still recovering former zooplankton and algae that's been turned into petroleum - I mean, how many fucking dinosaurs could there have been to make all this fossil fuel, and what, they all died in big piles under what is now Saudi Arabia?
My understanding is that the abiotic theory of production isn't accepted not because it's been disproven but rather because it hasn't been successfully used to predict reserve locations. What is the real evidence against this theory?

1. SS (FICA)is not a ponzi scheme. A ponzi scheme entails enticing INVESTORS with promises of a return on investment larger than most other investments can supply. The investor may or may not receive any returns on their investment and they are "able" to request the return of their investment subject to penalties and fees. (of course the good ponzi manager is usually able to divert these requests and an excellent one will actually get the "mark" to invest more.)
2. FICA is a TAX. Regardless what hundreds of politicians have told citizens since it's inception, it's nothing more than a tax. That anyone believe(s/d) what a politician said or says, says more about the gullibility of the taxpayer than the politician or the program.
3. Essentially, both welfare and SS are seen by the professional politicians as investments. Investments that are aimed at preventing older workers unable to continue working to feel connected to the culture and to not feel rejected and abandoned. This could lead to major elective problems for many politicians and rightfully could lead to more costly or unequal remedies at the state level. There are too many children that either do not have the resources or the emotional connection to their parents for the state/Feds to rely upon family to take care of these older people and SS and welfare spreads the cost per taxpayer and creates an controlled payout and oversight limiting abuse that is predictable and relatively fair. Welfare does the same thing only for younger mothers and children that for whatever reason have found themselves without means. Anyone who believes that reducing or eliminating either welfare or SS or both would cure the country's fiscal woes is sadly mistaken as those people won't just disappear. Something would have to be done for or about them.
4. There is quite a lot of corporate welfare doled out by the federal and state governments. Why do you think there's such a competition for the positions of senators and representatives? It's to be able to apportion those disbursements to those willing to share with those who arrange for them and to aid them in continued election.
5. That these programs have gotten larger than CURRENTLY sustainable is actually the product of the draw back of the economy however they can't be scaled back to the same degree that they economy withdrew without forcing many at risk people to be subjected to factors they would likely not survive and it would be on display for everyone to see what was happening. Unless you are willing to allow that then cavalier calls to cut people off are just internet bravado and posturing.
Much of the money in the economy has gone to banks and other financial institutions to prop them up due to THEIR mismanagement and in some cases outright fraud. If you support the idea of keeping these banks from failing then you cannot complain about SS or Welfare as propping these banks up is also a form of cultural protection. These banks are also tieing resources that could go to investing in construction, businesses or extraction of resources but they are being held to keep the banks from collapsing under all their bad debt.
Please. Before spouting some t-shirt motto about welfare or SS, do some actual thinking about how the system works, who are the real beneficiaries, who are the actual manipulators and what the reality would be otherwise.

A few points you're missing - assuming this comment wasn't a colossal troll - are that the fossil part of the fossil-fuels isn't dinosaurs. It's more to do with vegetation in places here and there. There's the famous Carboniferous Period, for instance; this was before the dinosaurs. This was before reptiles. It was a period when the oxygen content was 35%! That's a lot of vegetation to run the oxygen percentages that high!
So, there were dragonflies four feet long then, and frogs the size of you. The past, is, as they say, a different country. Earth was then a different planet.
Also there's continental drift to consider. Arabia wasn't always in desert latitudes.

I use light virgin olive oil for those type cases and a single quart lasts me a year. So I don't really care that it costs $14. For fancier needs, I have a bottle of extra virgin first press blah blah blah stuff that ran me $30 for a quart. It'll last me for many years.

Dinosaurs farted more than mammals. Cycads and gingkos give you gas.
All this methane went into the air, then was deposited in the oceans.
Sea critters took this material and made oil out of it.
Then they sold it to the extraterrestrials who came down here in their spaceships.

Take coal for example, another fossil fuel. The formations of plant fossils include three distinct processes: swamp to peat, peat to coal, and coal to fossils.

Again, a thoughtful answer for which I am appreciative, and no, I'm not trolling. My snark about Saudi Arabia had nothing to do with it being a desert, but rather the tendency of reserves to accumulate locally rather than more evenly as I would think would occur if what you're saying is the only answer regarding the origins of petroleum.
According to the much dread Wiki, the Carboniferous period did peak at around 35% oxygen, as opposed to ~ around 21% today. This oxygen-rich environment apparently led to hyper-vegetation and species gigantism. Lots of carbon-rich matter to turn into petroleum. I get all that.
But if the strict fossil fuel theory is correct, the local formation phenomena seems to suggest that only small amounts of all that decomposition resulted in hydrocarbon formations - e.g., those portions buried under subduction zones, etc. Otherwise, whatever else died on the surface would have looked like everything else that dies on the surface today, ashes to ashes and dust to dust as it were. Or are you saying that everything that dies on the surface today will someday be petroleum?
And again, where did the interstellar hydrocarbons come from given the absence of surround living material?
Your answers are just fine, they just don't explain the unbelievable volume of what we've extracted, the even bigger volume of what we know is still down there, or where hydrocarbons away from the Earth came from.
So, I'm not trying to suggest that both models can't be true, I'm just asking what evidence is there that the heat and temps generated deeper in the Earth couldn't have created significant amounts of hydrocarbons as apparently happened elsewhere in the solar system (or wherever our solar system captured them from), and are we correct in assuming we will one day run out of it given man's rather limited run on Earth so far?

Vengeful creatures, cats. My sister is visiting with her kids which means I'm gonna have to trim my Sadie's claws and that combined with the loud smelly chill'uns means my cat is going to hate me for a month.

we never ever allow such invasions.
my hairless pusseh only eats the crunchies no treats perhaps vika is right and shes just too good for human trifles. i know that the new kitten gets extremely excited about human food and clearly feels he is not.
the australian shepard loves all forms of human food. Waldo did too. the corgies were just to short to find out about human food. they just stared and looked cute.

had to pick my former Aussie up from the shelter one county over (still dont know how that happened but i think he had human help, he was a gorgeous dog who could climb fences. I think he was stolen then tried to get home. the shelter said the tag number wasnt him but i went to check and it was. i was pissed. I call such places... death factories. every single animal there was scared out of its mind. I wished i had room in the truck for every dog and cat there.

I have been telling people for years that zero is just a dumbfuck. I get the evil genius argument back most times. I always point out that smart people tell smarter lies than dumb people. Zero's lies are really fucking dumb. From that I conclude that he is too.
Sometimes I get the argument that he knows his audience and they are really fucking dumb, so why waste time making up better lies? If that is the case, then he has no pride.

Obozo isn't noble (though he like thinking he's a king), he's not peaceful, and the only prize he deserves is the PUTZ prize not for his golfin but for his being a total ass...

I see that the good "Reverends", race-mongers, leftists, and protected class of the perpetually aggrieved have gathered in Sanford, FL to protest the shooting of the young black boy. First, let me say that this may have been a flat out murder by an overzealous neighborhood watch person, but we really don't know all the fact yet. What ticks me off about this is, where's tha national outrage when a group of blacks set a white kid on fire while saying, "that's what you get, whitey". There's hardly a mention of something like that on the news, and there's certainly no national outcry for justice.
The media's lead-in to this story seems very coordinated - "The shooting of a Fl black teen has sparked national outrage". Well duh. I doubt the "nation" would even be aware of this story if it weren't for the media and race mongers having at it 24/7. Once again, we are told what to think and how to feel about something, and once again, many are playing the lemmings. Any loss of life in a tragic way is disturbing, but how about a little balance, huh? I'm sorry, but this black kid's shooting deserves no more attention than the white kid that was set on fire. If the FL shooting demands national outrage, marches, speeches, law changes, 24/7 media coverage, than so does any heinous crime committed by a black person against another race. Just my opinion.
It's obvious that this case is going to be used to try and overturn FL self-protection law. It will also serve as the spotlight case to show that racism is still pervasive in white America. After all, that agrees with Obama and Holder's beliefs.

and after the race baiters are done maybe pelosis can claim with obozocare this would never have happened,, and obozo can call the family and take a personal interest which will lead to campaign ads of how hateful the tea party and wingers are.... don't ask me how they come up with this stuff but they do...
