The Real Story of the Murder of Kitty Genovese

On March 13, 1964 Kitty Genovese, then 28 years old, was stabbed to death in Queens, New York by serial killer Winston Mosely. It became an infamous episode when the NY Times published a front page story accusing the neighbors of standing by while she was stabbed to death.

Apathy at Stabbing of Queens Woman Shocks Inspector

For more than half an hour 38 respectable, law-abiding citizens in Queens watched a killer stalk and stab a woman in three separate attacks in Kew Gardens.

Twice the sound of their voices and the sudden glow of their bedroom lights interrupted him and frightened him off. Each time he returned, sought her out and stabbed her again. Not one person telephoned the police during the assault; one witness called after the woman was dead.

kitty_genovese-kitty-outside-l

But there are so many inaccuracies in just the first two paragraphs - things that Martin Gansberg should have known were untrue - that it ought to constitute a case of journalistic malpractice.

Yet for years this incident was used to shame Americans for being hard-hearted and reluctant to get involved. There were even entire psychological theories created to explain the neighbors' behavior. But most of what we know about the case is almost certainly wrong.

In fact Christopher Taylor points out how wrong the very first three sentences are:

The problem is, while there were 38 people living in these apartments, only a few actually had a window on the street side where they could see or hear what was happening. It was three in the morning, so most of them were in deep REM sleep and probably didn't hear a thing.

And it turns out that no one actually saw the entire attack and that the police were called. Plus this happened just down the street from a bar known for its routine late night rowdiness:

She was only attacked twice, once inside where no one could see her. Timing is critical as well. Anyone who woke up to her screams would have taken time to get up and look out the window. By that time, they would have just seen a girl staggering down the street at 3 in the morning as a Corvair sped off.

The few witnesses who were awakened by the attack claimed they thought it was some domestic disturbance or a fight spilling out of the Old Bailey bar, not an unreasonable response. If you were awakened at 3 in the morning by shouts, how likely would you be to strap on your superman outfit and dash into the streets?

You can read more here.

One thing that people don't realize is how fast and undramatic violence can be. When I was younger I once saw a man get stabbed just a few feet away from me. It happened so quick that it took my brain a few seconds to verify that a knife really had gone into that guys chest. And there wasn't a lot of screaming or as much blood as you'd expect. It was nothing like the movies and if I'd been a neighbor looking out the window at the noise, I would have just assumed it was some drunken guys being rowdy.

Low Turnout in the GOP Primaries

So Republican primary voters are depressed by the prospects of Romney as candidate and a loss to Obama in 2012 and haven't been showing up to vote right?

Well not in IL:

Romney actually won more votes in Illinois than John McCain did in 2008 and the number of Republican voters who went to the polls also exceeded turnout four years ago. While turnout in Chicago apparently was extremely low, that wasn't the case for the entire state. Republican turnout was about 2.5% higher compared to four years ago, based on the latest state returns.

The Republican vote also surpassed the primary totals in 2004 and 2000.

And not true in general - GOP turnout is actually up in most states - especially the ones we most need to win in the general:

A strong majority of the most competitive races, meanwhile, have actually seen turnout increase since 2008, including Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina, Michigan, Ohio, Alabama, Mississippi and Illinois. Of those states, only Mississippi wasn't also competitive in 2008.

The takeaway: When there is major vote in a competitive race, Republicans are turning out to vote - at a rate slightly higher than they did four years ago.

Trends and Predictions

Various trends and predictions from John Durant. I agree with most of these and even the ones I'm not sure of are at least plausible:

  • More and more mysterious conditions will be tied to pathogens.
  • The rise in antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria and new viruses will be the most serious threats to human health over the coming decades.
  • The rise in resistant or virulent strains of disease will cause a political shift in favor of conservative politicians and values. Their decline will cause a shift in favor of liberal politicians and values.
  • The rise in personal measurement (and genomics) will continue to disappoint, as people realize that motivating good behavior is a harder problem than understanding bad behavior.
  • We are nearing peak misandry (hatred of men or boys).  More people are waking up to the fact that our nation's divorce and custody laws are wildly biased in favor of women, create incentives for women to divorce
  • Schools, curriculum, and teaching methods have been structured in a way that don't motivate men.
  • Homeschooling will continue to rise, particularly as online learning improves.

Good News: 3D Movies Won't Cost Extra at the Theaters

The bad news - they're going to raise the ticket price for 2D movies to make up the difference.

Among the bigger changes will probably see the 3D-upcharge disappear. 3D charges will help increase the overall ticket-price but, as an industry, I think we'll see a blend begin to emerge in 2012, where patrons will have a single price for both 2D and 3D films. 2D prices will increase and 3D prices will decrease.

And it turns out that the 3D of the 50's was more or less the same as what we have now:

When we picture 1950s movie audiences enjoying 3-D classics like Robot Monster or Gorilla at Large, we tend to imagine them wearing those glasses with two colored lenses, usually red-and-blue or red-and-green. ...But by the time Bwana Devil launched the 1950s 3-D fad, studios had switched to a full-color Polaroid technology using polarized lenses. That's right: it was essentially the same technology theaters still use today. Cat-Women of the Moon's 3-D was more or less the same as Avatar's!

"Explosive Polymerization"

So you've seen this warning phrase on on the jar of p-nitroanline but always wondered exactly what they meant. Well let this video answer your question especially the part around 1:20:

5 Things You Don't Learn About High School Until Too Late

Luckily for me my parents always made it clear that 'these are the greatest days of your life' was a huge lie, and that every person I saw and every thing I did at school was somebody else's choice so of course I'd be annoyed. So my expectations were kept realistic.

And not only are your classmates generally full of shit but also many of your teachers are as well:

These people are, after all, only human, and low-paid humans at that. They may be trying their best. But when you're a kid, you don't realize that your teachers aren't necessarily any wiser than the average person, and may in fact be undergoing medication for numerous mental illnesses.

And then there are the pep rallies which were always the one high school activity that absolutely baffled the foreign exchange students:

Most pep rallies are phrased as "We're all here to get our team pumped up and ready for tonight's game." But does it make sense to pull hundreds of people out of class to cheer for 10 basketball players several hours before the game even starts? The reason it doesn't is because what they're saying isn't entirely the truth. It's not so much about "team spirit" as it is "please buy a ticket and some popcorn and some sodas and some team merchandise." They're not trying to get the team pumped up. They're trying to get you pumped up, because the games need to make money.

Are the vents clean or can they be adjusted on the shotgun?  For a deer slug, it's usually "full choke" or closed vents that mean all the powder pushes the slug out the barrel.

For shot, that is usually adjustable in some ways, to affect the spread of shot or the type of shot used.  The shot really doesn't diverge until it exits the barrel. Like garrett said, just don't use steel shot, as that may be 'way too hard on the bore after a couple of rounds, if it is an older gun.  Check out a good gun store for real advice.  Don't go into Columbus with that thing, though, unless you have a permit for that sucker - you'll get arrested .  Drive out to Licking County or somewhere east of the city to have a gunshop guy check it out.

69 @ Conservative Crank Use shot ammo that is cupped like Winchester AA Skeet or Trap loads. Plastic cup will spin in the refiling with no damage and the wings of the cup will hold the load pretty well together for normal defense ranges. Wings peel back if you hit say drywall and the trap or Skeet shot will not over penetrate like a slug would.

Apparently we had a major Trayvon Martin rally here in the Seattle area today, complete with a family member ginning up outrageous outrage. It was at a church and then everyone marched in their hoodies to a park.

Ironically the commenters on the news website I read the story on seemed to be pretty much 10 to 1 not into the "Trayvon was a choir boy" story line.

80 Harlan Ellison wrote a fictional novel around the Kitty Genovese story. I'm pleased to see the story debunked.

I haven't read anything new by Harlan in years. I have some of his early stuff. It used to piss him off mightily that his works were classed as sci-fi.

82 16 Question for the gun nuts--what happens if I shoot shot from a slug barrel? ... Posted by: Conservative Crank at March 25, 2012 10:42 PM (1zwZo)   If your barrel is in good condition and is either a rifled slug barrel or a cylinder bore (usually an 18.5" or so barrel), then everything should work properly.   If the barrel is a choke barel or has a choke screwed in to the muzzle, then you need to determine the amount of choke.   First, determine what the gun manufacturer says. IIRC, lead slugs are ok to fire through Improved Cylinder choked barrels. More choke than that is a no-no.   I'm inclined to never find out by practical experience. I have cylinder and rifled slug barrels.

88   Choke is a term used to describe the constriction at the end of a shotgun barrel in order to produce a particular pattern  in the shot.  SWlug barrels can be smoothbore--the rifling is cast in the slug-hence the term rifled slug.  Or the bore can be rifled just as any cartridge weapon, or hunting rifle.

According to Winchester, steel shot does not cause damage to choke constriction over normal usage. Always presuming that the barrel is, of course sound.

So why would you wish to shoot shot through a slug barrel, if I may ask?

91 The better 3D presentations in theaters and home systems use synchronized LCD shutter glasses. This tech was developed by Tektronix (now part of Xerox) around 1980 and was available for personal computer apps. Antic sold a version for the Atari ST line.

Definitely not used in the 50s as LCD was first invented at RCA in the 60s. They stupidly failed to pursue it because it was perceived as potentially unwanted competition for existing TV designs. Incredibly stupid for a technology company. Always seek to be your own competition before someone else is and you don't own that product.

Instead of RCA cashing in, serious development of LCD had to wait for the patents to expire.

94 without getting into the whole "shotgun ballistics" argument (we've already beaten that topic to death on a number of occasions...and made the rubble bounce) I have a question: why #4 shot? If you're looking to "minimize penetration" bird-shot (# would be better. Bird-shot would be just as effective at cross-room range; #4 is far more likely to punch holes in the sheetrock and do great damage on the other side of the wall.

The problem isn't antibiotics in our food.

The problem is evolution.  Bacteria adapting to resist antibiotics.  Antibiotics have been around since the late 30's (sulfa drugs), then penicillin (a bunch of varieties), the erithromycins (variations again), cyclosporins, etc.

Every time one is used, it is another chance for bacteria to mutate to resist it. It was only a matter of time before strains of virulent bacteria would become resistant to antibiotics.  Scary but true.  Hospitals are the worst.  There are really virulent strains of staph and streptococcus bacteria present in hospitals, because of all the concentration of disease and uneven efforts at sanitization and sterilization that take place.

And anti-biotics have no effect on viruses, and never did.

So I went to pull on some work gloves. Now, these are nice deerskin work gloves, nothing fancy, ten bucks at some large hardware store, but they fit just right. Pulled on the left one. Wanting to keep my wound protected, I tried to pull on the left one, over that thin latex glove.

Couldn't do it. The latex grabs onto the glove, and the extra thickness, however minimal, makes a big difference.

At some point I realized what I was doing: trying to pull on a glove that fit me perfectly over a thin latex glove, finally realizing that the thing was impossible, and my only thought was:

The "best time in your life" idea comes from the simple fact there are a lot of people who are big shots in high school that don't come anywhere near that sort of position or status afterwards.

If you got a good career and family afterwards, who cares about high school?  In fact, if you got a job that required studying your ass off in school, you're more likely to have hated high school because that didn't count for anything on the popularity totem pole.  You were more likely to be towards the bottom of it.

However, if you could have had any girl you wanted in high school, if you were at the top of the totem pole but didn't get a good job afterwards (and there seems to be at least some sort of correlation there), if you looked down on a bunch of nerds in school and now see them making three or four times as much as you make--then, yeah, that was probably the best time in your life.

The "best time in your life" idea comes from the simple fact there are a lot of people who are big shots in high school that don't come anywhere near that sort of position or status afterwards.

I call it "Revenge of the Jocks." They were sports stars in high school, but that NFL career didn't quite play out.

Now they're the AC repairmen who go to special school to learn how to screw homeowners.

Well the weather here sucked today so I didn't get to fly.  As my businesses have sucked worse, I have been taking small victories where I find them.  I have an old Toro Groundsmaster with a 72" deck for a mower.  The battery was not charging  After seeing the amp meter was corroded and crapy I reconfigured the system a bit and replaced it with a volt meter.  Still not charging.  O'Reily's couldn't figure out how to check the alternator with their equipment so I went back to figuring.  I decided to remove and inspect the regulator.  Sure enough a wire had melted on one of the contacts.  I used the extra wire on the unit to bridge the break, a little solder and voila.  It was charging.  I adjusted the charging voltage down from 15 amps to 13.5.  Hope it holds.

156 "we can slow down the pace of bacterial mutation by stopping the over-prescription of antibiotics."

Way easier said than done.    In order to prevent a small number of post-op infections (a few of which can be devastating to the individual, but most of which respond nicely to a course of antibiotics once the infection occurs) Everyone gets antibiotics now.  There are financial incentives from the government if we can document that they are infused within a certain time frame prior to skin incision.    That doesn't even take into account the number of marginal cases for colds/sinus infections that are prescribed.

158 Stupid MSM sock. And you can use lead or tungsten shot in a rifled barrel, and steel in limited quantities (I wouldn't shoot trap for a year that way), but it won't pattern worth a damn. And I'd give a slight edge to the 870 over the Mossy 500, but not the 590, and don't listen to Gun Shop Guy, and antibiotics (as we know them) will turn out to have been a necessary dead end diversion, and with regards to the War Against Boys... I can't even watch TV anymore, when you stay away and come back to look at it you realize the cesspit of prejudice even the ads have become. It's not *just* gender smears, of course. There is a cultural war going on, and I've just been pushing against a brick wall on that for years. I'm at that point where I've realized I was wasting my time, but I haven't fixed the problem yet.

Try it with a golf glove or driving glove. Thin leather shrinks as it dries or the oils (from your hand) dry out.

Yes, I've run into that too with motorcycle gloves, but I don't think it applies to men's dress gloves. They're softer for some reason.

Remember the trial. OJ was to try on the gloves, see if they fit. Then his ten million dollar defense team spoke up: he'd need some protection from murderer cooties, or whatever, so obviously he had to have some protection in the form of thin latex protective gloves. No big deal, right?

Today I discovered that that protective glove keeps you from putting on a well-fitting glove at all. If it doesn't fit, you must acquit? Damn lawyer was playing chess, and the hapless prosecution was playing checkers.

I don't quite agree with this.  A rise in resistant or virulent strains of *venereal* disease will cause a shift in favor of conservative politicians and values, as the hedonists currently influencing all levels of government and academia lose power.  An increase in other diseases will lead to a call for greater government control in order to halt the epidemic.

The trick is to not just reset pendulums, the nature of a pendulum is to move, not sit still. We opened our systems of political and social control to people who had been closed out, and the *very* first thing they tried to do is close everyone else out. And pretty much every day since. Kind of depressing. If it truly is embedded human nature, all we did was create an imaginary gap in that process, and we can look forward to more War Of All Against All. Yay.

Ultimately, we'll need novel ways to negate bacterial spread. A promising way to accomplish this is to utilize a natural "enemy" of bacteria - bacteriophages."

I do home there is some bacteriophage type breakthrough on the same level that penicillin was years ago.  We need to kill the bad bacteria in an new and novel way.  Giving IV rather than oral may help.  But, we're gleefully giving IV antibiotics to all these pre-op patients who really don't need them now.  All for an additional 2% medicare reimbursement.  Hospitals used to try and actually think about which patients were appropriate for antibiotics, but now medicare says if they review so many charts and you haven't given antibiotics up to some certain % of the cases they'll dock payment by 2%.  Therefore everyone gets antibiotics so that the chances of meeting some medicare defined goal is enhanced.

Who'd a thought that government would have such an unintended effect?

We Have gone from Father Knows Best to Dad is a Tool.  I have been grousing for years Hollywood and the left have had a war on men, especially the white male.  Generally we are portrayed as stumbling clusterf**ks while our wives, children and everyother race or deviant sexual group is portrayed as rational and intelligent.  This is a constant theme in comedy and commercials.  I refer to the Lifetime Channel my wife watches as the Love, Beat, Rape, Murder, Kill Me channel. The story line generally is a heroine has to track down a murderer while nurturing a new relationship with a guy who is useless once the murderer is confronted and she settles it.

I'm not one who concerns himself with support groups and such but from a strategic vantage it is time men are reassert themselves.   Apparently I am not the only that has noticed this trend. Here is a website that addresses this called A Voice For Men.  http://tinyurl.com/73f685u They have some interesting articles.

Harlan is not an easygoing sort but he had to learn to stick up for himself fiercely at a very young age, always being the smallest kid in class.

I've met him on several occasions, heard him speak many more, and know several people who consider him a close friend. And every bit of litigation I've ever heard of him being connected to was entirely justified. James Cameron flat out told a studio exec he was using two of Harlan;s Outer Limits scripts as the basis for Terminator. (He also ripped off some late 70s Warren Comics for some elements of a cyborg character called The Exterminator.) If Poul Anderson were alive he'd have a pretty good case in regard to Avatar being a rip-off of 'Call Me Joe,' a book which won the Hugo in 1958 and would be almost impossible for a lifelong SF geek like Cameron not to be aware of. He could have thrown a million bucks at Poul's widow, Karen, out of his pocket change but that would mean admitting he has very few ideas of his own. This is why we have civil courts.

Among other things, Harlan has been active in trying to help elderly writers in danger of dying penniless and starving because they didn't plan for inevitable.

I have never heard Harlan disdain being known as a Science Fiction writer. He would object to being known solely for that, as it ignores the considerable work he did in non-SF TV, among other things. A far better example of someone who got persnickety about being called an SF writer was Michael Crichton. He made a career of taking ideas that had been done many time very well in SF novels and putting them in the general fiction area of the book store to make orders of magnitude more money than almost every SF writer who has ever lived.

Yes, but it's not something that most American women are aware of.  The modern feminist left is run largely by man hating lesbians.  The rank and file are useful idiots who believe that they can spend their twenties whoring around, then get married in their late thirties and pop out a perfect little kid with some bizarre leftwing fantasy man all while climbing up the corporate ladder.  When it doesn't happen that way, they panic.  And deep down, a lot of them probably want to ditch it and be stay at home moms and raise their kids, but have been made to feel guilty about it.

Best years of my life I suppose were my 30's raising my kids and creating a home.  I have enjoyed the heck out of pretty much all my life.  I got very little satisfaction out of highschool and only had a couple teachers I thought earned their pay.  I must confess, while over all I was a good kid, some of the time I was a dick to a teacher or two for no good reason.

I don't get the joke but there are two types  of "baby powder" sold.

One is finely ground corn starch. It can absorb a bit of moisture, like sweat. Good for itchy ball syndrome.

The other one is made from finely ground soapstone (talc). It turns to goo with sweat but it's great for chafing. It's basically a dry lubricant like graphite.

So read the label and buy accordingly, or you may be sorry.

After putting that bit of knowledge on you morons I bid you goodnight.

May you forever be tormented by jock itch or the female equivalent.

A quick internet search turned up this about Harlan from tvtropes.org :

Things he's famously grumpy about include, but are certainly not limited to:

People who discount all science fiction as being no better than the worst of film and TV sci fi ("that hunchbacked, gimlet-eyed, slobbering village idiot of a bastardized genre").
In fact, as of Dream Corridor, he hates the label "science fiction writer", which he sees as too limited, and really doesn't like the label "sci-fi writer".
And he really REALLY doesn't like the term that's pronounced "sigh-fie".

292 Probably the worst example of the Woman That Wanted It All is Maureen Dowd

One pitiful column she wrote a few years back was about spending Thanksgiving with her mother and brothers, sick that mom didn't mind being June Cleaver and running into her bedroom to be alone because they didn't talk about elitist subjects like she did.

It was pitiful because she had nowhere else to go, her elitist friends all having their own families. Pitiful also because for all her disdain for her brothers dinner conversation, she's reputed to be painfully boring to others and she's a nonstop gossip

It's funny to go out and see those women out with their friends.  You can almost smell the desperation.  The sad part is that they'll marry some poor schmuck and treat him like crap, probably cheat with her pilates instructor, and still try to make herself into some sort of heroine of female empowerment.

On dating sites, I avoid any profiles over 30 who say they want kids "someday".  It means that they don't know what they want, and they have funny ideas about biology.

At first I thought it was just an area of wilderness that had mechanical devices to achieve certain effects. But the dude in charge seemed to be able to make the sun rise and set whenever he wanted. And make vicious beasts appear to attack instantly. So it seemed to behave more like a giant holodeck. Never read the books. But it appears the Capitol is living in magic sci-fi Star Trek land while the districts are living with subsistence farming level tech. Am I right? Do the books clear it up.

Got news for you, most Science Fiction fans hate the term sci-fi, not just the writers. It's a derogatory term usually pronounced as skiffy in fandom. It's the mentality that puts 2001: A Space Odyssey on the same level as It Came From Outer Space.

As I said, being called a Science Fiction writer isn't a problem. Being identified with a belittling term of disdain is a problem.

Considering that most of the occasions I met Harlan were SF Conventions, I really don't think the man has a problem being known for Science Fiction. It is the way the mainstream has treated it that is the problem. Keep in mind that for the prime years of his career the NYT Review of Books wouldn't even acknowledge the existence of works published as Science Fiction. They'd gush over Slaughterhouse Five, in which the protagonist is abducted by alien with a non-linear sense of time but Dune or Lord of Light? Never heard of 'em.

Good luck with Miss Hummingbird. Don't be put off by the age difference.  I think she has an idea of what she is getting into, and maybe even subconsciously she knows exactly who  and what you are as a man - and that is what she wants.  Don't feel funny about it, because she sees you differently than others see you or you see yourself.

And by good luck, I mean that I hope you really hit it off.  She's been hurt, but now she is older, she is not looking for the superficial that many younger men and women seem to want.  She sees you through the eyes of love - and that's really all that matters.

There's a lot of stuff written on this, especially by pick up artists who use it to their advantage.  Basically, the bad boy image conveys leadership or strength, which implies good genes.  Furthermore, women like drama, especially young women, and bad boys appeal to that part of them.  Dating a bad boy means lots of drama, and feeds to the idiotic idea that they can change him, keeping the good parts and while trading in his Harley for a Honda Civic.

No, he's better.

Bradbury is an obnoxious drunk obsessed with the virtues of being a pedestrian. I'm not kidding. Over a twenty year period at every event he showed up at he was seriously soused and always wanted to talk about how cars had destroyed Los Angeles. To him Los Angeles is the little chunk of it he walked around in the 40s.

The one virtue of heart disease is it forced him to give up the booze.

Everything Bradbury wrote that merits keeping in print can be read in a day. He was coasting by the mid-60s while only in his 40s and quite young for a writer, getting by on being on the short list of science fiction writers who could be assigned in schools.

no they came from a fucked of family paradigm where an asshole was what they saw mommy with, when they were little. This programmed them to seek an asshole's approval when they are big girls like mommy. Sadly this is how little animals learn how to live and forage... from mommy-- and if daddy or the man around mommy, sucks then the little critter learns to seek a sucky mate just like him until they realize "Wow! Im a human not an animal, and I can make better choices!"

349 The "bad boy" thing is just humans trying to detect and fake status signals. Most women want to marry up and mate with a higher status male. The "bad boy" image is a way to fake being higher status. High status males really can be jerks and get away with it. And often it's not really being a jerk. High status males are often busy and have lots of other options. So women learned to associate a certain level of rudeness and disinterest as a sign of higher status -- which makes the male more attractive. Lower status men quickly learned to fake being rude and disinterested to fake status. The "bad boy" image is like make-up for men. Women seek nobility, men seek nubility. So women learn to fake youth and men learn to fake status.

Well, it might stop the day after the day after the next one.

Seriously, how much more American debt can the world adsorb, with us running the kind of deficits we are?  What is the magic the the Federal Reserve is doing with their balance sheets that allows them to buy so much debt?

We are in such screwy new territory that who knows what could go wrong next?  I would be a lot happier if a new administration came in with some prudent financial sense regarding the deficit and slow growth economics. That, and the disaster that is coming in the form of that abortion call "Affordable Care Act",  aka Obamacare.

I really think that our future is going to be like Argentina. A country that has material wealth that is all screwed up by its stupid colllectivist politics and a hundred years of bad fiscal policy that wrecked what should have been a wealthy  country.

There is a lot of ruin in a nation.

353 Everything Bradbury wrote that merits keeping in print can be read in a day. He was coasting by the mid-60s while only in his 40s and quite young for a writer, getting by on being on the short list of science fiction writers who could be assigned in schools.

Within a few months if everything goes well, there will be a lot more of Poul Anderson's works available in legit e-book form. I'm doing conversions for Karen Anderson. The Game of Empire is mostly done and just today I scanned in all three volumes of The Last Viking series to OCR the text and format.

There are some jerks who have put collections of Poul Anderson stories on Amazon but they have no connection to his family or any publisher he ever worked with. It's too expensive to sue over and the best thing to do is put up official versions of the same material.

And people wonder why Harlan sues people.

I'd argue it is a reflection of pre-modern conditioning.

Prior to the formation of geenrally law abiding societies, which remember are really recent in human history, your best bet as a woman was to become wife, first, second, or #x,  of the local warlord.

Said warlord would likely be an ultra-A asshole. So it is no more surprising women would be attracted to that profile then that men would be attracted to pretty young women (proxies for fertility).

364 "I wonder if the Bad Boys syndrome could partially be subliminally mistaking the body's heightened alertness in presence of "danger" with sexual arousal." Well my oldest had a thing for bad boys, and just from what I saw.. it seemed to me that what she really wanted in a boyfriend was a "project". She wanted someone she could fix, someone that would provide her with crisis after crisis and one drama after another so she felt needed and things were always "interesting". Could be wrong of course, but that's just what I observed when she was still living at home and dating. When she did meet a nice guy who treated her well she'd dump him in short order. Just not enough drama to feed her soul I guess, not enough work required to make her think that she was the focal point of his existence. I never got it myself, but fortunately she seems to be maturing a lot now that she's on her own.

But ultimately, the Fed is the reserve currency for the planet. The Euro was challenging that status for a bit, but not lately.

In a way, we have been moving to a new de facto gold standard, in that gold is keeping its value steady against whatever the politicians contrive to do against it. When the big banks are buying gold with both hands (as they have been doing for a year or more) that is when you know that the gold standard is back.

382 @368 Exactly. Status means a lot in a tribal world thousands of years ago. Really important to be on good relations with the folks in charge when a hard winter or a drought comes. Nowadays we laugh when teen-agers treat friendship and relationship problems like it was life or death. But for most of human history it really was. If the popular girls start shunning you. Or the big tribal jock thinks you're a pussy and a loser. That's really bad. Like, get kicked out of the tribe and starve in the wilderness bad. We all our the descendants of survivors. Thousands of years of our ancestors doing whatever was necessary to survive and reproduce. And probably for all of us we have ancestors who did the worst possible things. Murder, rape, you name it. Stealing that last bit of food from an infant. Making hard decisions during that bad winter or drought. We are all the offspring of the survivors.

So did a lot of people, and a lot earlier. Check out 'Armageddon 2419 A.D.' by Philip Francis Nowlan. This was the basis for the Buck Rogers comic strip, though he is solely known as Anthony Rogers in the book. (It can be found on Project Gutenberg.)

First published in serial form in 1928, it features telecommuting couch potatoes who never leave their apartments and view the world through big video displays, ordering in food and other goods as needed. Aerial drones, semi-nuclear weapons, paratroopers, air supremacy failure due to lack of ground force commitment, and a lot else. It seemed amazingly lacking in anachronism when I first read it in 1974.

390 Forgive Student Loan Debt to Stimulate the Economy

The Student Loan Forgiveness Act of 2012 (H.R. 4170)

Congress finds the following:
(1) A well-educated citizenry is critical to our Nation's ability to compete in the global economy.
(2) The Federal Government has a vested interest in ensuring access to higher education.
(3) Higher education should be viewed as a public good benefitting our country rather than as a commodity solely benefitting individual students.
(4) Total outstanding student loan debt officially surpassed total credit card debt in the United States in 2010, and is on track to exceed $1,000,000,000,000 during 2012.
(5) Excessive student loan debt is impeding economic growth in the United States. Faced with excessive repayment burdens, many individuals are unable to start businesses, invest, or buy homes. Relieving student loan debt would give these individuals greater control over their earnings and would increase entrepreneurship and demand for goods and services.
(6) Because of soaring tuition costs, students often have no choice but to amass significant debt to obtain an education that is widely considered a prerequisite for earning a living wage.
(7) Amidst rising tuition rates and stagnant grant funding, many students are forced to supplement Federal loans with private loans, which frequently feature higher interest rates with fewer consumer protections.
( A borrower who experiences an extended hardship for whatever reason, or a borrower who experiences a series of separate hardships over a longer period of time, will often have no choice but to default on his or her private student loans. Opportunities to put such private loans into forbearance are limited.
(9) During the period of forbearance on private student loans, interest continues to accrue and is capitalized, and once the borrower comes out of forbearance, he or she owes significantly more on the principal of the loan than before the hardship period began.

you are cracking me up. Up until recently marriages were arranged and who you wanted didnt figure into it. it was a property transfer between your father and the family of the groom. Money changed hands or property and everything. Doweries were important. Bride price was important. Cattle land and gold if you were important, furs, bedding and a few geese if you were not.

looks not so much. personality not so much. love or attraction--NOT AT ALL. Dad sold you to the alliance that was best for the family and offered you the most prosperous or at least stable future if he loved you. If he didnt love you or had too many girls you would be lucky to make it out of the transaction alive.

im sorry. the ultra A asshole just raped who he wanted, made advantageous alliances for gold and property, and no woman wanted to attract that kind of attention, they wanted to AVOID it. They would do their best to talk pops into marrying them off to a man they could be pretty sure would have enough to eat and wouldnt beat them.

Think about what Bond would have become with his talents and capacity for violence if he didn't become a tool of extra-judicial murder and destruction with a license to do so, no less. Not just a thug. This is a guy who can charm as easily as he can murder. A far more frightening sort of person than a mere gunman on a government leash.

417 Most of human mating is from our forager pre-history. Dowries are more from our history as farmer which is fairly recent. For most of our history as humans we lived in small forager tribes. Much smaller than the village, town, and city based systems that developed after farming.

same with coptic christians in egypt.  they do FGM too. its cultural not religious a sort of regional thing. sadly you cant land a decent husband without it the parents fear, so they clip the girls so they can marry them off  advantageously and not have to pay too much to dower them and hope the man treats them with honour as promised.

a lot of orthodox jewish weddings are arranged. a whole lot of them work, a matchmaker screens out the loser then they go on chaperoned dates with the prospects and see what happens. Or the families take the kids into consideration, and fix them up with a match that seems right, and they often work out too, though sometimes they do not, and yes it is very bad for the woman.

Dont think this is just for arabs. I have a friend who is a russian matchmaker and she offered to set ME up! i said uh, no thanks.

Yes, in pre-modern societies. I'm talking about the period before city states wherein most of human history occurred. So for example, look at the "rape" (theft not sexual assault in this sense) of the Sabine women by the early Romans.

The truth is that even in modern society often times relationships are "arranged".  Every dating site claims to use some sort of algorithm to sort potential matches, friends will set you up based on who that think that you would like, etc.  Marriage is still something that is as much about the community around the two as it is about the couple themselves.

The plaintiffs claimed the power companies knowingly had endangered them by emitting unsafe levels of carbon dioxide. The case was dismissed in 2007, then resurrected by the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals in 2009. The latest ruling should put an end to it.

the p-nitroaniline decomposes into just soot, the same as the wood in any fire - it forms that big column of soot because the decomposition also produces gases (primarily ammonia and nitrogen dioxide) that propel and buoy the soot upward
anyway, that's your chemistry knowledge for the day

449 Fucking disgusting. Thus now that this money has been paid, the matter is settled as far as Sharia is concerned, and there should be no further protests or agitation over this. About that we shall see, but it is a bad precedent in any case for the U.S. to abide by Sharia in this regard. However, that precedent has already been set so many times that one more is not going to change things significantly. "Afghan massacre: Kandahar families given compensation," from the BBC, March 25 (thanks to John): Afghan families who lost relatives in the Kandahar massacre have been paid compensation by the US military. They received $46,000 (£29,000) for each person killed and $10,000 (£6,300) for each person injured, Afghan officials and tribal elders said. US staff sergeant Robert Bales was charged on Friday with 17 counts of premeditated murder. Meanwhile, eight Afghan police officers and an Isaf foreign soldier have been killed by a bomb in Kandahar province.... Will anyone pay blood money for them? Family members were informed of the payouts at a meeting with personnel from the US military and the Nato-led ISAF forces at the offices of Kandahar's governor. "We were invited by the foreign and Afghan officials in Panjwai yesterday and they said this money is an assistance from [US President] Obama," Haji Jan Agha, who said he lost his cousins, told Reuters on Sunday. Compensation payments by foreign forces in Afghanistan are often made in cases of the deaths of civilians. Compensation is traditionally offered in Afghanistan in a bid to soften anger among a victim's family and also as a gesture of good faith and healing. Some tribes, however, refuse to take part, seeing cash payment for a life as a disgraceful act, and preferring to take revenge....

Anti female? You won't find anyone happier to see females than me.

The door to my quarters was always open to any yeoman in a short skirt who wanted some one on one time with the Captain's Log. Who was it who had that fat pimp Harry Mudd thrown in the brig while I made sure his three "companions" were put into protective custody in the Enterprise's jacuzzi room?

Now Sulu, there was a woman hater. That pillow biter would vomit every time Uhura forgot to cross her legs when she turned around on that swivel chair. Strange thing though, one time Nurse Chapel's skirt rode up when she bent over and from the smile on Sulu's face, you'd have thought he'd been told he was getting a month's shore leave in San Francisco

OK -- Readers' Digest version: I was going to school at the University of Casual Sun Bathing, and got into a programming class for business majors, where you actually had virtual punched card decks and submitted batch jobs. And half the people who submitted jobs would get printouts after 40 minutes showing the uncompiled code and no output....and would cry to the heavens, "what the hell happened to my output?!?!?"

And I'd say, "Cthulhu got it. It was sitting right there in the output box, and a tentacle came up out of the drains and swiped it."

A bit later, we got to choose our own names for the interactive computer system, and I naturally chose "cthulhu" -- so that I could send user-to-user messages that said, "I've got your output. Don't bother looking for it."

So I've been doing the cthulhu schtick for 30+ years. And I'm still amused by it. As the saying goes, you have to get older, but you never have to grow up.

I would've hit Troi like she had stolen Spock's brain.

600 But even 7of9 wasn't as hot as the actress. The hottest Jeri Ryan ever looked on that show was in an episode where some aliens had taken over and had the crew hypnotized to play out a WWII France fantasy in the holodeck. 7of9 is wearing ordinary clothes from the era and looked amazing. The Captain had a in interesting Marlene Dietrich homage as well. She did the is she or isn't she mode really well.

Looking back, the only voyager episodes I'd ever care to see again are the ones with the cast getting to do weird stuff like that. The other eps are just painful unless it's got a RiffTrax added to it.

601 Y'know, guys, there is one advantage to age.....you can think back to when things REALLY sucked.

1979 -- three years of Carter, the House had been owned by tax'n'spend Dems for a GENERATION, the creeping march of socialism was so inevitable that Nixon had established the EPA. And a washed-up ex-actor was going to get creamed due to the inertia of incumbency.

Mind you, the current disregard for the rule of law and the Constitution is worse. Declining to follow-through on already-won racially-based voter-intimidation is worse. Furnishing arms to kill 300 Mexicans and 2 uniformed Americans is worse. Attacking freedom of conscience directly as an emanation and penumbra of an unconstitutional law is worse. But in 1979, we didn't know we could win -- it was a choice between lose ugly and lose graceful.

We owe a lot to Ronaldus Maximus -- but the most valuable thing he gave us is that "inevitable" isn't.

603 "Before her role in Star Trek, Sirtis had provocative, sexually-themed roles in several movies. In the Faye Dunaway film The Wicked Lady, she engaged in a topless whip fight with Ms. Dunaway. In the Charles Bronson sequel Death Wish 3, Sirtis' character is brutally raped by street thugs. In the film Blind Date, she appeared as a prostitute who is murdered by a madman. Sirtis appeared nude extensively in all three films. As a result, when she later achieved fame through Star Trek-The Next Generation, her earlier movies generated considerable nude stills traffic/internet buzz among Star Trek's predominantly young, male fan base. She also appeared in the 1979 movie Caligula as an extra in one of the orgy scenes."

That episode reminds me of a Dennis Miller bit about virtual reality. If Joe Sixpack can come home and have simulated sex with Claudia Schiffer for $20, it would make crack cocaine look like decaf.

This is the dark unspoken secret of the Federation. The unproductive masses are kept out of trouble with industrial scale holodecks. Some are having actual sex with each other and never realizing it was a real person. Talk about an opiate of the masses.

Ronnie also gave the biggest bedspins imaginable thru the combination of the 1981 and 1986 tax acts.  I guess he figgered he just could not stop the 1986 act cuz he didn't have the votes in the Senate.

Between the two the world ended up crazy confused and right at 1000 savings & loans and banks crashed.  I could tell you endless FDIC and FSLIC stories.  It was a huge mess and it sucked to be any human in contact with those bureaucracies.  Reagan was better than the other choices before of since, but he was a long way from perfect.

609 I don't. I just remember it had Dwight Schultz from the A-Team as Lt. Barclay. The whole idea of the episode was ridiculous. I normally refer to it as: "after living together for 2-1/2 years, I thought we were practically married -- and she thought we were practically single." -- which is a nice attempt to toss it off lightly. But it wasn't light, and it wasn't fun, and some of the broken pieces of that relationship still find their way into my life today like slivers of broken glass in the carpet.

Talking about it might be some sort of masochistic exhibitionism. Or it might be penance. Or just a warning to others. But it's a bit of the real me, whatever it is -- and that goes a bit beyond vinegar and water.

I'd link stuff for Vika but I don't think her interests are legal in most states.

Speaking of homoerotic subtext, did Gregory House ever jump Wilson's bones?

I thought they would have made TV's cutest queer couple.  Was I the only one who concluded House's troubles were stemming from being closeted?  Dude was gayer than the entire cast of West Side Story!

703 When House and Wilson were living together, that was a gift for all us HoWi shippers.

Good morning, Vic.

706 Good Morning ONT Morons.

So the stories about the Kitty Genevieve stabbing are all BS. Who would have known it. We had no internet then to refute it.

As for turnout in the Republican Primaries yes IL had an increased turnout, but it wasn't much of an increase statistically (929K vs 900K in 200 .  I looked at every one of the primaries a couple of weeks ago and there are two that had significant increases, SC and MA.  The rest were mostly no change or a significant decrease.

709 I have to say I'm getting a bit tired of the alleged wit at Cracked.com. I haven't seen it linked here, obviously, but they recently had a "top 6" things about rich people or something. Standard boiler plate liberalism. The first entry here about "being cool" - it ends after high school ? It does ? The fuck it does. College is nothing more than High School 2.0. The only thing that really changes as you age is your access to larger groups of people with similar interests. Certainly its possible for there to come a time where a dumb jock is just a dumbass with basically no skills, but good looks and personality take you a long, LONG way in this world. And, don't ever let it be said that good genes don't come in groups. Tall ? Good looking ? Probably smart, too. Hate to say it, but its true. The bit about teachers with mental health issues ? Come on. Yeah, I'm sure a tiny percentage of them. Just like the general public at large. Also, be sure to take into account that is one person's opinion. One person who very likely has always thought they were wicked funny and witty. Too much by half.

I'll take the "Nicole Kidman" model, please.  About age 30, and with slightly larger, uh, medallions up front.

Which Star Trek episode was the most sexist/anti female?

Posted by: SpocksBrain at March 26, 2012 01:33 AM (uhPd1)

How about the one where the woman transferred her mind into Kirk and vice versa so she could be a Star Ship Captain, but was totally incompetent.

Yeah, but she was a nut case from the git-go.
