Heh: The California To Texas Translation Guide

Via Doug Ross comes this handy guide for Californies who have Gone To Texas and are having a hard time communicating with the locals. It also works pretty well for any non-blue state.

I wonder if there's a browser plugin you can get that will automatically translate MSM-speak for you as well.

UNC-Chapel Hill Forbids The Mention of Limbaugh's Name During Broadcasts

Or their name to be spoken during Rush's show:

UNC-Chapel Hill has asked WRDU 106.1, a Triangle station also known as "Rush Radio," to stop referencing the school or the Tar Heel Sports Network during the broadcast of Rush Limbaugh's daily talk show on the station.

The new practice, announced in a statement from the university, also prohibits mentioning Limbaugh's show during the broadcast of UNC football and basketball games on Rush Radio.

Why? Well because they're such an open-minded community of ideas. And because they fear getting conservo-cooties over the radio waves.

The Death of Encyclopedia Britannica - Dead Tree Version

So the Encyclopedia Britannica as a printed set of books is dead - from now on it'll be in electronic form only. Which is kind of shame since it was always my favorite encyclopedia at school.

But they were also notorious for their high prices and hard-sell techniques:

It was either a door-to-door salesman or a hawker at the county fair who suckered my parents into buying the Encyclopedia Britannica. ...They were the perfect marks for the encyclopedia man: They wanted to give their kids a good start in life, they believed in the expansive possibilities of consumer goods, and they trusted the authority of the Britannica name.

I don't know exactly how much they shelled out for those books, but I remember it was a major purchase-big enough that they had to pay on an installment plan, and big enough that when the books arrived in the mail, we greeted them as joyously as we would a new car. My sister and I cleared a space on the bookshelf and carefully installed them in alphabetical order. And that's pretty much where they've remained, mostly unopened and forgotten, ever since.

I made the mistake once of inquiring what the price was and was hounded for months by salesmen knocking on the door. And then you had their commercials like this one - which I remember seeing and remember wanting to beat the shit out of the arrogant little prick they had as their poster-snob:

Turnaround: Japanese Troops Learning Hand-to-hand Combat From U.S. Soldiers

The US system may have been initially inspired by Japanese martial arts but it's evolved and now has the benefit of actual use in combat:

Martial arts experts charged with revamping the Japan Self-Defense Force hand-to-hand combat program are eager to incorporate lessons learned by U.S. troops fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan.

In recent years, the U.S. Army has revised its own hand-to-hand combat training based on interviews with hundreds of soldiers involved in close-quarters combat in both theaters.

...During close-quarters combat drills, American troops learn to thump enemies in the chest with the muzzles of their rifles, creating space in case they need to shoot to protect themselves. The technique was developed after experts analyzed the information provided by the troops involved in fights in Iraq and Afghanistan, where soldiers are more likely to find themselves engaged in crowd control than fighting with bayonets

How Containerization Changed The World

Pretty much everything you have around you likely arrived via a shipping container. And it turns out the idea of a standardized container was the brainchild of a truck driver in the 30's who was irritated that he had to wait so long for the stevedores to load his cargo onto a ship.

11 Classic Posters

That were probably on your wall if you're of a certain age.

In early 1976, one of Pro Arts' founders heard from a friend that many of his dorm-mates at college were buying women's magazines just for the Wella Balsam shampoo ads that featured a blonde beauty named Farrah Fawcett. Pro Arts tracked down Fawcett and arranged a photo shoot beside the pool at her Bel-Air, California, home. Photographer Bruce McBroom used an Indian blanket that doubled as a seat cover in his Chevy as a backdrop. Farrah chose a red one-piece bathing suit in lieu of a bikini in order to cover a scar on her stomach.

Post-Sex Psychology

Researchers are on the job and the results seem well about what you'd expect:

In that case they found that our post-coital behaviors - again considering only heterosexual sex - tend to split along gender lines. Eating, fixing yourself a drink, smoking and asking your partner for favors - all activities that sound pretty good to me - were more likely to be taken on by the men. The women, in this case, placed greater importance on behaviors related to intimacy, like cuddling and "professing their love.
No word though on sammich-making or tearful apologies.

Man Raped By Woman?

Via unwanted surprise BJ:

A woman was today ordered to stand trial in Australia, accused of breaking into a man's home and raping him.

Rebecca Helen Elder, 39, pleaded not guilty to one count of aggravated serious criminal trespass at the man's home, and one count of rape.

...At trial, prosecutors will allege Elder, of Parkside, broke into a house while its male occupant - who cannot be named - was lawfully on the premises.

They will also say she broke in with the intention of committing a further offence of rape.

Finally, prosecutors will accuse Elder of raping the man by performing an act of oral sex without his consent.

16 I received this yesterday from my friend's boss.

"Dear Friends, Clients and Colleagues,

It is with great sadness that I write to share the news of the untimely passing of a great attorney, a great hearted man and someone we will all miss, John Peara Baba.

John died in his sleep over the weekend, peacefully moving on to whatever comes next for him. He leaves us all the better for having known him. He advanced the laws protecting the right of people to have access to the court and public process without fear of countersuit. He also preserved the right to negotiate with tenants and advanced other legal rights of property owners in meaningful ways.

I am sure each of you will have your own fond memories. I had the pleasure of working with John for the last 12 years in my law practice, during which time he distinguished himself admirably with published decisions and well earned recognition as a "Rising Star" on the "SuperLawyers" list. I will miss him dearly as a member of the firm and even more as a friend.

///

I miss you already John.  Here's to that law firm we never will open -- it would have been great.  Rest in peace.

I read that Daily Caller article on the timeline. I've heard over and over from some that "Zimmerman should have stayed in his car once told to by the 911 operator"

Zimmerman wasn't in his car when he called 911, he was outside, and the recording is loaded with background noise, something you don't have if you're in your car with the windows closed.

Zimmerman was heading back to his car after the call, JUST AS INSTRUCTED

WWE is in a down-phase, but Raw is still the #1 cable show on Mondays, Smackdown is near the top on Fridays and 1 million plus homes will pay $50-$60 to watch Wrestlemania on PPV. As TV ratings have gone down and PPV buys have declined (the once a month non-Wrestlemania PPVs are down considerably) WWE has kept expanding internationally, so there overall revenue is flat to slightly down. Big draw this time is Rock vs Cena and Undertaker vs Triple H. Might be Undertakers last match cause he's real old and broken down. WWE is my guilty pleasure. It's dorky. It's stupid. It's fake. But I still like it.

87 I was extremely disappointed by the ending of Lost.  I watched the entire series, and I kind of liked the "open for interpretation" throughout the series.  But I wanted some damn conclusive answers at the end, and I got very few.  I think the writers had no clue what they were going for, so the just said "eh, it's up to the viewer".  What a cheap cop-out piece of shit excuse.

I accidentally saw a few scenes of Seinfeld on occasion. I liked one. It featured Elaine dancing. Epic.

...

The Kramer guy. He was on a show called "Friday's" or some such well before Seinfeld. He did a regular skit where he played a kid in a sandbox, pretending to blow up toy soldiers. Occasionally his mother would come holler for him to come into the house. He would hide and make faces. I always thought that was the pinnacle of his TV career.

In 1961, World Book produced a Braille edition, which filled 145 volumes and nearly 40,000 pages. The project was mainly an effort in goodwill, for the company did not see its way clear to selling enough copies of the set to cover production costs. Eventually, all sets of the Braille edition were donated to several institutions for the blind. In 1964, the company also published a large-print edition.[8]

176 Yes, Undertaker is pretty old now. Mid to late 40s, I think. He pretty much only wrestles at Wrestlemania now. And Jericho just came out of retirement a few months ago in order to fight CM Punk. The beef is they both used the same catch phrase "Best In The World". So now they have to fight so see who's really the best. Assumption is Jericho will lose and go back to his band after Wrestlemania. Apparently metal is still big in Europe.

183 "63 So, how can you tell if you are a white Hispanic? Or just white?" The way you tell is if you have had any negative interaction with an A A. If you have had a problem with an AA you are a "white Hispanic", if you haven't, you are just Hispanic. It is so funny to see the news media people trying to figure out how to spin this when they actually have an incident where both people are members of the left's victim groups. I'll bet there are a lot of news media people who are kicking themselves that they didn't look at a picture of Zimmerman. If they'd known he was "brown", they could have done a better job of spinning it to blame whitey.

Rankings of evil harpies in America

Hillary! is still the top evil harpy in America

And Joan Walsh of Salon is her attendant evil junior harpy.  Joan constantly extols the imaginary virtues of Hillary! on Salon and elsewhere

But never forget the perennial (40 years running) Jane Fonda, once a young evil harpy, now and aged and more sinister, cunning evil harpy

Gloria Allred, evil aged harpy lawyer

Soledad O'Brien, stupid CNN harpy

Rachel Maddow, silly lesbian evil lying MSDNC harpy

Rosie O'Donnel, a harpy that can melt steel with a glance, who is also fat and evil. Did I mention she is a fat, evil harpy?

And rounding out this group is Nancy Grace, perhaps the most unpleasant woman on television (which is saying a lot!).  She gets the Emmy as the leading women evil harpy on TV

I assure you, it was not a choice.  That said, I can see why the ladies enjoy it.  Roomy enough for me, a normal sized guy of 6' and 185, so a bigger girl should be just fine.  The rear windshield and bumper are enormous, so there's tons of room for stickers, and the engine is fairly thrifty with the gas, but still has some zip on the low end.  It does wheeze out like a ululating Lilith Fair folk singer when you're trying to jump 60 to 85, but that's probably a feature more than a bug.

Obama isn't worried about the moderates, he figures the MSM will cover his ass and keep them confused and scared enough of whoever the Republican nominee is that he'll split them more or less in half.

They claim that my husband earned $56,000 a certain year and was owing taxes for it -- this being the year AFTER the bone marrow transplant that sidelined him into unemployment, mind you -- and they were acting on info from IRS. So we called IRS. They said no, they didn't say that, they had no problems at all with us. And this is not the first time this year that the state tax people sent us something bureaucratically screwy. We're starting to seriously think they're throwing everything, anything at the taxpayers in hopes 1 out of 1000 times it'll accidentally stick to the wall, or someone doesn't want the hassle of fighting it. I haven't really watched wrestling since about 2002-03.  I've heard of CM Punk but I honestly couldn't pick him out of a lineup.  They just don't resonate.  I've even seen The Miz on other shows and I don't think I could identify him without being told who he is.

He is also black.

280 @256 CM Punk is kinda skinny, looks a bit like General Zod His gimmick is he's Straight Edge (which he is in real life, Straight Edge is a no-drugs, no-alcohol spin-off of the punk scene). He does a good evil cult leader schtick when he's a bad guy. He's an anti-hero good guy now though. Punk is also rare in that he made his name in the independents and WWE let him keep the name. Usually they change the name and gimmick so they own the copyright. The Miz main-evented Wrestlemania last year, but has fallen to the 12-man grab bag match. Huge fall in stature from the #1 bad guy last year. Screwed up big a few months back when he dropped a guy doing a high-flying move. Miz started as an MTV reality show guy and works the chat show circuit like mad. Kind of a crappy wrestler, but a decent talker.

Personally, I think it's perfectly valid for him to file charges.  As others have pointed out STDs are a real danger.  More importantly, for all we talk about the misandry that is common in parts of society these days, saying that a man should always want sex from a woman and therefor it isn't rape is awfully misandrist.

At first they did the "pursing leads" line. When I pushed, I got the "won't comment on an ongoing investigation" thing. Then I asked the guy I was talking too, are you the detective in charge of the case? He said he was. So I asked him, "just out of curiosity, do you even know my first name?" Dead silence. I had to laugh. Didn't need a translator this time, the fuck off message came through loud and clear.

And he replied "If in fact we owe you money, I assure it will be paid in a timely manner -- but first, let us establish if we DO owe you anything." Gaargh. As to your ammo comment - Unfortunately firearms also gives me the heebie-jeebies; my father had one, and he was kinda like a landmine, so I can't quite shake off the feeling of danger it represented. (He once asked me if I believed he could kill me; when I said, well, yes, he went on to explain that should prove he loved me, considering the crap he considered he suffered because of me. Oddly enough this was not reassuring.) But maybe this is also another thing I can delegate to my husband.

Austin is another fucking planet from the rest of Texas. My husband says that in other states, the major cities aren't as different from each other. E.g. Madison is just a smaller, slightly nuttier version of Milwaukee, while Houston is very different from Dallas, which is a world apart from Austin, etc. Is this anyone else's experience? I've only lived in San Antonio, El Paso, a small NM town and eight miserable months in San Francisco, so I really don't know.

But in their defense they only promised so people would keep watching.

437 Ground up bugs IS one of the standard dyes. Been used in the food industry for AGES. And used as pigment and fabric dye for centuries. Hell, got some of the bugs myself, I did a bit demonstrating Elizabethan miniature painting once. 440 Instead of using dye for the strawberry frappucinos, Starbucks is using ground up beatle shell (cochineal or however the heck you spell it).

One may ask oneself why they don't just use some sort of, oh I don't know, strawberry. But instead, bugs it is.

Ok, just looked it up online.  Honestly, it's not that upsetting.  Strawberries would be a lot harder to use, especially with the amount of dye that they use, and it looks like they were trying to avoid artificial dyes on purpose, which leaves only the old fashioned dyes, ie beetles.

484 There were only so many ways Battlestar Galactica could end.

Either they get wiped out by Cylons (depressing) or they don't.

If they don't, then they either find Earth or they don't. And again, failure = depressing.

So they've got to find Earth. Which means either future Earth, present-day Earth, or the past.

Future Earth is just another Planet of the Week, really. Or it's an uninhabited wasteland, which bounces you right to the Adam & Eve plotline anyway. If you don't want that, then you've either got present or past Earth. Present Earth might be interesting, but it also reminds your viewers of Galactica 1980, which was when the old show really turned to shit. So you don't want that.

Which leaves the past. It can't be historical past, because, well, there's no history of interstellar travelers arriving on Earth. Which means prehistoric Earth, and boom, you've got the series ending as produced!

The alternative: the producers should have had the balls to show Galactica going out in a blaze of glory fighting the Cylons in a last climactic battle, while the refugee ships scatter through the Galaxy. But during the Bush administration, that would have simply been impossible. Hollywood simply couldn't show military victory as good or even possible.

485 "More importantly, for all we talk about the misandry that is common in parts of society these days, saying that a man should always want sex from a woman and therefor it isn't rape is awfully misandrist. " I know what you mean Alex. We joke about it with men, because men's attitudes toward sex are often a bit more easy going. However, we do know that any unwanted sexual contact is wrong and a crime. Also, we don't have a sense of humor about women being raped because women are usually smaller and weaker, and we have a natural tendency to sympathize with a weak person being victimized.

Hear, hear!

I also am pretty much stuck here.

I have a feeling were I to be suddenly transplanted over to certain Red states, I would have a hard time of it. As a matter of fact, I was raised in those same states. I was raised to not dance, drink or gamble, or watch porno, or smoke some weed every now and then or date girls outside of my own race or buy a beer on Sunday.

That is all so much complete bs.

I drink, gamble, dance, play music, sing, yell, smoke some weed every now and then, watch some titties on "Game of Thrones" and yes I have dated outside my race, and even married one, raised a family I am proud of.

I even listen to some Willy Nelson music.

I don't have strong feelings about gays. I wish they would show some discretion every now and then, pretty much the same way I feel about heteros acting out in public.

I own guns and practice with them.

So, I have a feeling I would not cut it in Mississippi or South Carolina.

Texas, maybe. Maybe Austin.

And before you all pound my hide about the weed, Pat Robertson agreed with me last week, so go pound sand.

I still am registered (R) and will do what I can here, which is not much given the paucity of our numbers.

I hate it when simpletons say that they wish California would fall in to the ocean. I certainly don't rejoice when a tornado wipes out a whole town in a Red state. I pity them. I would never wish upon my fellow humans such a misfortune, and I despise it when some complete idiot wishes that upon me and mine.

I love our nation and those that defend it.   I love Jesus and hope he loves me back.

That's just me.

Yep. MS resident here, and I've heard it all. AL, LA, AR and GA all say thank g_d for MS; they keep us out of the bottom rankings in so many areas. Then there is that whole MS burning reputation and the forced school integration stuff from the 60s.

MS has its good and bad parts, like all other states. I don't get too upset about the bashing and correct people where they are just plain wrong about stuff.

583 Oh, and as far as Cena goes, he can suck my dick. I grew up on Florida wrestling in the 80s. I was trained by an offshoot of the original Malenko school, after Larry passed. Before I ever debuted in the ring you better damn well believe I owned my boots, and I will not even take a worker seriously if he's performing in basketball shoes. I can even give a pass to CM Punk on wearing the Asics because he uses kickpads to cover them up.

Also, Dusty Rhodes is a fat asshole. Fuck you, Dusty.

585 "Polarizing" was a poor choice of word by me. I'm not a very religous person myself, so his style comes off a little over the top and in your face for me. I think that's too bad because it would tend to make me shy away from watching things he's produced. Monumental might be very good, but I would just have the feeling in the back of my mind that at any minute it could try into a reason for him to start proselytizing.

I grew up loving wrestling as a kid. I haven't watched in years but seems there are no longer any good gimmicks or personas. I still remember the casket match between the Undertaker and Jake "the Snake" Roberts. For God's sake, the Undertaker's manager was a guy named "Paul Bearer".

You had Hogan facing Andre the Giant at Wrestlmania 3 and the soap opera of the Macho Man and Miss Elizabeth. Now you have guys like Cena, CM Punk, and the Miz. No thanks.......I'll pass.

625 Rawr.   Finally finished my technical presentation on the Chevy Volt.

I don't think it makes sense in any context, but I've never gone to the effort of proving it until now.

Bottom line:   It doesn't make financial sense for something like 90% of people, unless Obama succeeds in driving prices up to $10/gallon... But in that case, we'd all be too poor to buy Volt anyways.   Lose lose for GM.

And that analysis includes all of the gov't incentives favoring the Volt.   Without them?   Only the insanely rich with money to burn could bother with the Volt, for the smug feeling of "saving" Mother Earth.

650 The thing with wrestling gimmicks is this:

The best gimmick is not to have one. Jake Roberts was just himself. Sure, there was the snake, but that came later in his career. He never yelled and screamed, because that's what other guys did. He talked, and you had to listen.

CM Punk is a good example of someone today who doesn't so much have a gimmick as he just shows a side of himself and cranks it up to 11. He's pretty much done the same thing since he was on the indy circuit down here.

Even the "Old Man" Malenko wasn't hated so much for being the evil Russian, like the Koloffs were. He was hated because he went out and beat up everybody including major face Eddie Graham, with whom he carried a long storyline and real-life feud.

I'm only 32, but grew up in such a way that the business is still much to me like it was in the 80s and before. Even if somebody knows who I am once I'm out from under the mask, should I be around someone not in the business I put up the kayfabe wall and refuse to admit to my identity. (Caveat: Yes, I discuss it openly here and on the FB group, but mainly because I don't see the Moron Horde at my shows. If you did show up I would pretend not to know anything about anything unless we were alone and out of earshot of other people.)

My real pet peeve is with people that say that wrestling is "fake." Especially when they say it to me like I don't know it. First, I don't think anything you do that has caused a legit sprained ankle, cracked ribs, broken sternum, dislocated wrist, and two major back injuries (not to count the daily aches and pains from regular bumps) in two years can be counted as fake. Secondly, I say to these people, "Oh, like how Alan Rickman became a puddle of guts and goo at the bottom of a building after filming Die Hard because acting is as real as can be, yes?"

710 ""Hey Bers,

how are things at Strat mountain?

So I am playing on Sunday, and there is a guy playing a strat and couldn't the damn thing in tune. His stoner buddy turns to him and sez in a tone of voice like those dumbass TV shows about some hospital ER: "Tuner, STRAT!!!"

Strat mountain got a little silly actually. I went a tad overboard with them, but fuck it.

They aren't hard to keep in tune if they are set up right. Mine stay in tune fine after I tweaked or checked the setups. As long as the bridge is set up good and the nut slots have the right clearance they work good. Yeah, not like my jacksons with the floyd rose bridges, but they stay in tune good.

742 I think Obama probably doesn't want to get involved in these things, and learned his "lesson" but this was becoming too big and his supporters were probably expecting something...like he's our man in the white house, how come he is silent? That must be a lot of pressure. So, he spins a really cool sounding phrase that means little, but sounds deep and comforting. Then things get revealed...ooops.

750 I don't think that's going to be good enough. You're gonna have to get some radioactive waste out of Yucca mountain. It's easy, just get some camo. In case the camo doesn't work out, a pink lacey thong and push-up bra. When you can't sneak past the guards, distract them!

757 So, did anybody in the mid-Atlantic region see five strange-looking white clouds in the sky between 5:00-5:30 EDT? They were caused by five sounding rocket launches from Wallops Island, VA. They released chemical clouds to track high-altitude jet stream winds at 60-65 miles up. The launches have been scrubbed several times in the past week, because they had to wait for precisely the right weather and visibility conditions. Last night I heard that they were scheduled for between 2-5 AM this morning, which was no good for me. So I went to bed at midnight. I happened to wake up right at 5:00 and looked out the window. I saw one skinny, twisty trail. A few minutes later I could see three of them. They were surprisingly bright and changed shape rapidly. My view was restricted by the window, but if I was outside I'm sure I could have seen all five. I didn't know exactly what time they were going to launch, but it turns out I woke up at precisely the right time to see them! Now I'm wide awake and have a few hours to kill before work.
