Oh Noes: SC GOP Not Down With the AoSHQ Lifestyle

Attention morons - your ilk is not welcome to run in the Laurens County, SC Republican Party primary.

Because they have standards.

Standards that you can't possibly meet - well unless you have access to a time machine. And in that case we're gonna want to talk to you about why you've been holding out and not offering to do a little 2008 retconning.

Before you can join the Laurens County Republican Party in South Carolina and get on the primary ballot, they ask that you pledge that you've never ever had pre-marital sex - and that you will never ever look at porn again.

Last Tuesday, the LCGOP unanimously adopted a resolution that would ask all candidates who want to get on the primary ballot to sign a pledge with 28 principles, because the party "does not want to associate with candidates who do not act and speak in a manner that is consistent with the SC Republican Party Platform."

And what happens if you fall off the pr0n wagon?

The pledge, which all Republican candidates must sign if they expect to be on the Republican ballot, also says, in its introduction, that the local party will "... seek to hold me into account ..." if the candidate is negligent in upholding the principles set forth in the Pledge.

The process for "holding into account" is not specified in the document.

Also out: Thai tranny hookers - which are forbidden under no less than three provisions.

The Face of Anonymous

Top members of computer hacking groups Anonymous and LulzSec have been arrested across two continents after their leader - one of the world's most wanted computer vandals - turned them in.

In a startling show of betrayal towards his fellow hackers, 28-year-old Hector Xavier Monsegur led authorities to the five people who have now been charged in court papers in New York.

...The suspects reportedly include four LulzSec members - two men from Great Britain and two from Ireland - and one member of Anonymous - an American named Jeremy Hammond from Chicago.

And for all their talk about Fighting The Power, they mostly stole credit card and bank information from hacked websites.

When Michelle Obama Occupied Harvard

Well it does look like her and would fit the timeline.

In May 1988, Harvard Law Students, borrowing from Alinsky's Rules for Radicals, and foreshadowing the Occupy movement of 2011, occupied the Harvard Law School's Dean's office. The students were supporting Professor Derrick Bell's demand that the law school hire professors on the basis of race.

One of the students "dressed in black" and occupying the dean's office appears to be Michelle Obama (Harvard Law '88 ).

You can watch the video here

adams_harvard_video_3-7-12_screncap-3

And if you're curious about Derrick Bell's sci-fi story, "Space Traders", where evil whites sell black people to space aliens, you can read the whole thing here:

Then came the second surprise. The leaders of this vast armada could speak English. Moreover, they spoke in the familiar comforting tones of former President Reagan, having dubbed his recorded voice into a computerized language-translation system.
And this point constituted the third surprise. Those mammoth vessels carried within their holds treasure of which the United States was in most desperate need: gold, to bail out the almost bankrupt federal, state, and local governments; special chemicals capable of unpolluting the environment, which was becoming daily more toxic, and restoring it to the pristine state it had been before Western explorers set foot on it; and a totally safe nuclear engine and fuel, to relieve the nation's all-but-depleted supply of fossil fuel. In return, the visitors wanted only one thing-and that was to take back to their home star all the African Americans who lived in the United States.

Those Innocent Soviet "Trawlers"

Just perfectly innocently fishing wherever the US Navy happened to be. And innocently packing torpedos too?

Sad Facts About Popular Music

"Too Fat" Dutch Top Model Wins Lawsuit

Ananda Marchildon was named Holland's Next Top Model in 2008. The contest promised her a three-year contract with €75,000 (close to $100,000) in arranged assignments - but then they fired her. Illustrious modeling agency Elite, the international group responsible for such showstoppers as Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Alessandra Ambrosio, and Cara Delevingne, dropped Ananda from their roster under the premise that she had "a nice face but a fat ass," due to her hip circumference being two centimeters wider than the 90 cm they allow. They deemed that, because of those two centimeters, she wouldn't look good on runways and wouldn't even fit in the sample-size clothes . so they attempted to pay her off with only €10,000 (about $13,000), €65,000 short of what she had been contracted.

Because God knows you wouldn't want a fatty like this walking your runway.

59 God, that pledge is so ridiculous-- like an Onion parody of Republican conservatives. Why, stupid party, why? I'm no socon, yet consider social conservatives a valuable and valid part of the GOP coalition-- but I dearly hope most of them would agree this kind of stuff is ultra-retarded. And actually contravenes conservative principles (completely obliterating private/public, personal/political lines). And it seems to me (I'm no expert) incongruent with Christian religion/ faith too-- Caesar encroaching into territory that's properly between you and your conscience, you and the confessional, you and God.

Are they going to do a nightly bedroom check? Or an "intimate" examination, like the virginity testing Islamists perform on girls before marriage?

What this pledge ensures is that most of the candidates who get on the ballot will be liars, politicians who hold pledges in utter contempt.

96 Hey everybody. Hoping SoS has another update tonight.

Also, just had to share this. Hard to believe it's real; more like it's as if this blog was propelled 400 years back in time. Borrowed from www.listsofnote.com.

THE EIGHT KINDES OF DRUNKENNES

The first is ape drunke; and he leapes, and singes, and hollowes, and danceth for the heavens;

The second is lion drunke; and he flings the pots about the house, calls his hostesse whore, breakes the glasse windowes with his dagger, and is apt to quarrell with anie man that speaks to him;

The third is swine drunke; heavie, lumpish, and sleepie, and cries for a little more drinke, and a fewe more cloathes;

The fourth is sheepe drunk; wise in his conceipt, when he cannot bring foorth a right word;

The fifth is mawdlen drunke; when a fellowe will weepe for kindnes in the midst of ale, and kisse you, saying, "By God, captaine, I love thee. Goe thy wayes; thou dost not thinke so often of me as I doo thee; I would (if it pleased God) I could not love thee as well as I doo;" and then he puts his finger in his eye, and cryes;

The sixt is Martin drunke; when a man is drunke, and drinkes himselfe sober ere he stirre;

The seventh is goate drunke; when, in his drunkennes, he hath no minde but on lecherie;

The eighth is fox drunke—when he is craftie drunke, as manie of the Dutchmen bee, that will never bargaine but when they are drunke.

100 The MSNBC in my breakroom has been on commercials every time I've been in there. Of course, I went out and bought lunch today instead of bringing one in, so I wouldn't have to be insulted while I heated up leftovers. Can't afford to do that every day on what they pay me...

My plan is to document the stuff that would be considered harassment/hostile work environment if it were hanging on a cube wall or overheard in a hallway, then make an anonymous report through the company ethics office in the UK, who should hopefully filter it back to the US HR lady.

Honestly, everytime someone at work has gotten out of line making fun of women or white rural people, I've successfully dealt with it by just asking them to please not do that around me. But the dude from the client we share space with putting on MSNBC even after I pointed out they insult half the people working there on a routine basis...that's new.

112 Stuck on Stupid's latest report:

242 Double apologies folks, I wasn't able to hang around much last night and
read any additional commentary -- Have a killer cold at the moment so was trying to get as much sleep as I could. Feel a bit better, but the second apology of course is for getting home so late to post the update.

Tonight's Episode, unfortunately, well have to be titled Revenge of the Turds. The morning was pretty uneventful, but at lunch time Che, the che-ettes and about 5 others came up while I was eating.

I'm guessing either Che and the others either figures he's in the "safe zone" since his supervisor was canned but he didn't, or he figures he's going to get canned eventually so it just doesn't matter anymore. I'm guessing it's probably the former, the kid strikes me as being a blithering idiot.

So he saunters up to my table flanked by the usual duo of slack eyed idgits and of course 5 others who are part of his usual lunchtime crowd. He smiles at me and informs me, "You know, were passing around a petition for people to sign. Were going to get you fired."

I looked up at him, and smiled back. "You know, it would probably be a lot easier if you just circulated a petition that got you named Queen of France. Once you become Queen, you could call the CEO and demand he fire me. And of course once that's finished you and all your peons could go out and have free cake."

Well, Che-boy stared at me for a moment or two, and lacking anything clever to say they all stomped off. I doubt they got the obvious historical reference, in fact I doubt they even understood that their petition had about as much chance of getting me fired as it did in getting him named Queen of France. As usual they just didn't get the response they were expecting, at all, and as a result it pretty much blew all of their rather limited little circuitry.

The rest of the day pretty much passed by without incident, until it was time to leave and I headed to my car with my bodyguard in tow. You might remember my bodyguard -- the guy that's been walking me to my car for the last couple of days. I've been calling him Barney Fief -- because he sort of reminded me of the character from the Andy Griffith show, at least physically. He's about 5'2, weighs maybe 135 soaking wet, and can't have been shaving for more than maybe a year or two. I'm guessing he's somewhere in his early twenties, at most.

Well I can't really call him Barney Fief anymore, it just doesn't fit. He walks me out to my car, and sure enough, it's been trashed. Somebody has scratched obscenities in the hood, on the doors, and on the trunk. On closer inspection there is a switchblade sticking out of one of the rear tires.

Apparently the idiot(s) didn't realize that like most cars, the one I drove to work was riding on steel belted radials. Rather than trying to slash through the sidewalls, they tried jamming the blade into the back of the tire where the tread is -- and the blade got caught in the steel belt. Apparently they couldn't get it back out again and left it there.

So my bodyguard sees this -- and first he just stood there, staring at the car. Then the strangest look came over his face. If I had to describe it, I'd call it rage. It was weird. I swear as God as my witness, he stood there and started to shake. As for me, sure, I was annoyed. Seeing the blade still stuck in my tire was kind of amusing as well, I mean to think that these dipsticks couldn't even slash a tire by themselves, well it struck me as kind of funny.

But not the security guard formerly known as Barney Fief -- he took it personally. Very personally -- much more so than I could imagine since it wasn't even his car. He looks up and me, locks eyes and says -- "Sir, I'm sorry. This is my fault. I promise you, I will find the people responsible for this and make sure they get whats coming to them."

Ok, couple of things that really made this stick for me -- one, he made direct eye contact, never wavered. By the look on his face and the sound of his voice I knew that for whatever reason, he felt personally responsible for this incident. He also used the word I -- and when he said it, he really meant it. I really can't say what prompted it -- I mean it's not like they assigned this kid or anybody really to look after my car.

But for whatever reason he stepped up and took ownership of the whole thing. Normally of course in a situation like this people feel compelled to tell a guy, "Hey, it's not your fault.. " etc.. But somehow that just didn't feel right. For whatever reason he felt like he owned this -- he wanted to own it. I knew right then and there I couldn't talk him out of it or say anything that was going to make him feel like he didn't, and somehow if I'd tried it would have made it worse.

So instead, I just nodded, opened the trunk and took out one of the two spares I had and the trusty floor jack I always carry with me. While I getting the stuff out of the trunk he called the cops, then he helped me change the tire, making absolutely certain that neither of us came anywhere near touching the switchblade.

We had the tire changed and were waiting for the cops to arrive, the kid -- no strike that, the young man was still fuming. I can't really call him a kid, despite his age, it just doesn't fit. I looked at him and figured he could use a little cheering up, so I said something I thought would do the trick. "I'm really glad you were here tonight. It's good to know a good man has my back."

I was right, he brightened up almost immediately. "I figured you'd have asked for one of the other guards by now.. you know, somebody bigger."

I just smiled. "Nope. It's like my grandpappy used to say, it's not the size of a dog in a fight that matters, it's the size of the fight in the dog. From the first time I saw you I figured you for somebody that had a lot of fight in you. So no, there's nobody I can think of that I'd rather have watching my back." -- ok God's honest truth is I really didn't care because I never figured any of the loon squad would have the guts to do anything face to face anyway, but the young man needed a little confidence builder, and by goodness he had earned it as far as I was concerned.

So we waited for a bit longer, the cops finally showed and we filed a report. The officer took the switchblade, tire and all, as evidence -- lol. Makes me wonder just what sort of weird stuff one might see in a police evidence locker.

It also occurred to me that the encounter in the lunchroom made a little more sense. Not that I have any doubts that the loon squad honestly believes they can get me fired with a petition, but in retrospect it occurred to me that most likely they were there to establish an alibi, since they knew they'd be at the top of the suspect list.

It also occurred to me that I couldn't really call my bodyguard Barney Fief anymore -- he deserves a lot more respect than that. So if anyone has any  ideas on what a good nickname for him would be please shout out -- the young man really impressed me tonight and he really deserves a moniker that reflects his true nature.

At any rate, after the police left I thanked the young man again, shook his hand, and headed home to file my nightly update, but not before stopping off at an autoparts store and picking up some touch-up paint. Haven't had a chance to deal with the scratches just yet, but the guy at the autoparts store sure got a surprise when I asked him to take a look at my car and give me his best guess as to how much touch-up paint it would take to cover the damage.

He came out, looked it over, and said, "Damn, Ex-Girlfriend?" I shook my head and said, "Nope, long story. It starts with a T-Shirt." He looked at me quizzically and I just shook my head. "Trust me, don't ask."

You'd go to a restaurant or bar and the guy would order you a coke or 7 up, because gawd forbid you should do anything as awful as drink a beer. 2. Then they'd take you to some out of the way parking spot and try to get in your pants. Which was fine, because then you knew he wasn't gay. Someone needs to explain to these SC repubs that if they limit themselves to people who never had sex before marriage, the pickings are going to be pretty slim.

134 #99, many gay men secretly or openly hate women and like scrawny teenage boys which remind them of when they first discovered their sexuality. If you think about most gay fashion design for women and why the models look the way they do. Why they have to obsess and make a big deal about their sexuality defining who they are is beyond me. If gays want their relationships to be "no big deal", than stop making a big deal and dramatic production at every opportunity!

139 "Why not just call the lad by his name?"

Well I can in person of course, but here not so much - I have to avoid using any real names or anything that might make it "reasonable for a person to infer" where I work or any of the people involved.

It's sort of a fine line I have to walk with this, my company required me to sign a bunch of NDA's (Non-Disclosure Agreements) because of the nature of the work I do - so as long as I keep this anonymous I'm fine.  The moment I give out any info that steps over that line though, the company could decide to sue me back into the stone age for violating one of those NDA's.

So I have to be a bit careful about that, I don't mind losing my job over this, but I'd rather avoid stepping across that particular line.

In the original ending of "Space Traders," Professor Bell had the African Americans being sold to the space aliens, who promptly shipped these unfortunate souls to a far off planet rich in resources, and where each of them was given a "gat", allowed to roam freely about the planet without responsibilities at all, except to breed uncontrollably while getting stoned on all the best "shit" in the galaxy, forever.  The aliens never harvested the transplanted souls for meat, required any work of them, or used them for medical experiments.  They were simply allowed the freedom to do whatever they want with unlimited resources at their fingertips.

Professor Bell realized that such an ending sounded too much like official fucking government policy of the day, so he changed the ending to have the American president, in a fit of conscience, denied the aliens' generous offer, and set to work trying to fix America's problems using logic, actual math, discipline, hard work, and traditional American know-how and industrial might.

152 "Approaching you in gangs and doing things that they are unable to do face to face is a hallmark of the coward."

No worries, in my youth I discovered something very, very interesting about crowd dynamics.  The guy jumping up and down and screaming in your face?  He's doing it assuming the rest of the crowd is going to back him up.  Hence the 15 second rule.

Ok, I'm sure most folks are well aware of the 10 second rule about dropped food, most mom's tell you all about that when your a kid.  The 15 second rule works somewhat similar, only in reverse.

It's always one guy, jumping up and down and in your face - but he's almost always nothing to worry about.  He figures the crowd has his back and as long as he keeps screaming and acting like barney bad ass then you won't do anything, because, well, he never would if the situation were reversed.

So, when you do make your move, you have 15 seconds.  If you can drop him like a sack in 15 seconds or less, no one in that crowd will do a thing.  It's kind of a weird effect really.  Everyone assumes that someone else is going to step in, and when no one else does, then everyone second guesses whats going on and no one steps in at all.

The key is that 15 seconds, any longer than that, any struggle of any duration and at least one guy will step in, then another, then another... and pretty soon your screwed.

But you can drop the guy like a bad habit in under 15 - no one will move a muscle, and no one ever steps up to take his place.  Bizarre, but true.

Laurens County Republican Party: Ideological and religious purity, or else!

Depending on the source, as many as 53% of the county's nearly seventy thousand residents are members of a congregation of some sort, so, it only stands to reason...

Next thing ys  know, they'll be arguing about which among them are really, really, for real christians...

Reagan's big tent is a bit tattered, now, innit? Olympia mighta had a point about that one...she's gotten almost everything else wrong, but she had a point about that one!

(It's not a matter of when the pogroms begin...it's just a matter of how many people are gathered up and imprisoned or killed...and a matter of which party gets the chance to start them.)

SoS, I would give Che boy and his posse's names to the MD.  Sure would help them narrow the search for the death threats.  Tomorrow morning you might ask her if she thinks the vandalism to your auto makes the death threats a bit more credible.  Che boy is an immature turd and needs to go, along with his posse for the workplace to have any normalcy.

I would encourage Che boy to pass around the petition.  Imagine everyone on the list would be fired.  Oh yeah, thanks for the updates!!

Warmer than it normally is here for this time of year - didn't see anyone wearing gloves today so they might have a set of prints on the switchblade, but of course if he doesn't have a criminal record and has never been fingerprinted for any other reason, they won't have anything to match a print too even if they do get one.

Granted the HR Director would have given me cause to do so, but the MD put a stop to that as soon as she was made aware, and while I might change my mind depending on how this meeting goes so far everything she's done has been above board and has demonstrated she's serious about what's going on, so I have to give her the benefit of the doubt until she gives me reason to think otherwise.

I'll know more tomorrow of course, after I get a chance to meet her face to face, and we'll go from there.

I think it would really be a day brightener for him - I liked Dalton to a certain extent but not sure if that would work.  Not sure if he'd get the reference, for one.. and well, if he did, would depend entirely on what he thought of the movie as to whether or not he'd take it as a compliment.

212 Polliwog,  it's a weird situation, because the battalion that I fall under for administrative stuff is responsible for putting my name on the roster and is now saying that they don't have a replacement.  My boss, the operations officer for the brigade, tried to tell me how awful he felt about requiring me to go through with the rotation, but the fact is that he could very well go back to the division rep and say "we don't have a replacement officer for this slot", especially since there are already other positions vacant.

NGD,  yes, my paperwork was already in, and I have my orders stating that I'm out of the Army on 1 May.  The problem is that I have 40 days of leave saved up, and I was planning to take terminal leave starting on 22 March,  Instead, I'll only be able to take about 30 days of leave, and have to sell back the other ten.  That's going to cost me money, and will cost me more as well because I'll have to pay for rent those extra days.

As long as you can do it fast enough that everyone behind him is still to stunned and waiting for someone else to jump in, your fine.  If you take much longer than 15 seconds or so, your screwed.

One of them will invariably jump in after that, because your still to busy dealing with the first guy and it occurs to him that hey, he can't fight us both.  Then you get a massive dog pile effect - lol.. not pretty.

But as a general rule if you nail that first guy so hard, so fast that he goes down within 15 and doesn't get back up - well, fights done.  You can have 40 or more behind him and not a one of them will volunteer to go next.  Rather funny thing to watch really, but works like a charm every time.

I didn't, but my bodyguard did.  Love many of the nickname choices BTW, only thing is he's a pretty young guy so I'm not sure if he'd get most of them.  Might run into a reference issue there, and I'm looking for something I don't have to explain - I think it will mean a lot more if it sounds like something I just came up with naturally and off the cuff, one guy to another sort of deal.

Ok, ya, spending a lot of time on this I know.. but the young man deserves it.

As to the car, well a new paint job at a body shop would cost a heck of a lot more than I paid for the car originally - even if I took it to the cheapest place in town.. lol..

I'm going to see how the MD handles it though, leave the ball in her court on that one at least initially.

The epic re-cap post and comments section to follow will probably reach 2000 comments covering three and a half days. As will the follow-up story several years later when it is revealed that SoS (AB, BoN, Pbuh) has parlayed his cool million into billions, selling his essence (blood transfusions - what the hell were you guys thinkng he was selling?!?!?!) on e-bay for $5,000 an ounce to millions of pussified American metrosexual males.

That's not the issue.  The issue is that they knew about the blatant threats and did not take adequate precautions (except for asking you to be "discreet") while you were on their property, and they have 100% liability.  You are a far nicer person at this point than I would be, SoS.  Although I'm sure you've heard the same from the barracuda lawyer chick.

As for your bodyguard?  They usually work for a subcontracted service.  I would write a really nice letter of commendation for him and send it to both him employers (if subcontractor) and your folks.  Maybe even mention that he has stepped up for you in ways that you are still waiting for others to do . . .

250 "Joints, small bones, and impacts with large stationary objects."

Well, if I'm going to get jumped it will most likely be in the parking lot, which tactically is a really bad idea for them.  Worst case scenario I move between two cars and their numbers won't mean much, they'll have to come at me more or less on or worst case two at a time.

Plus being between two cars I have plenty of hard, unyielding surfaces with which to introduce various body parts at high velocity.  Rule number one in a fight of course, never hit a guy with your hand if you have something much harder that won't get hurt to use as a substitute.

As it is though I'm not worried about a physical confrontation.  These guys are pretty gutsy when faced with a ferocious monitor or a terrifying, unguarded car.  But like most bullies the last thing in the world they want is a confrontation with someone that will hit back.

285 272-Lol!!! I feel like I've lived everywhere. I'm paying for it too, with all the weird stuff we've had to eat. But it's been pretty fun. For geography, look for fiction on the places the kids want to study, read those first, and then go back and look up the places the book mentions. Then have the kids go to State.gov embassies, which give local information on the capitals and major cities (with consulates) or to CIA.gov Factbook, which gives the nitty-gritty about various countries. That will give a good, cursory background on most countries. It's also fun to get a world map, glue it to corkboard (cork tiles from Home Depot/Lowes work great and are cheap.) and then get push pins to mark all the places they have studied. We've done that with the kids, and also marked the places we've lived/visited, and they really enjoyed it.

SOS, re a new name for the security guard.

There was a soldier from Texas in WWII who clocked in at 5'5" and 110 lbs.

The Army paratroopers and Marines turned him down as too short and underweight.  The Navy turned him down for being underweight.  Finally, the US Army took him, although he passed out during close order drill in basic and had to fight off his company commander's attempts to transfer him to cook and baker's school.

Once he got into combat, he eventually became the one of the most famous soldiers of WWII.

Medal of Honor recipient Audie Murphy.

As a side not I know one guy *everybody* thinks is Mexican, he's Japanese. That can be hilarious. Luckily for him, he speaks Spanish, 'cause *everyone* tries to speak Spanish to him. Lol.. well, I'll see what the MD has to say, seriously though I could give two hoots about the car.  Just to see that young man take ownership like that, to watch him go from being a kid to being a man - hell, that's worth a million times more than that old piece of crap car could ever be worth.

I know it's weird - the last few days have been, well tiring really.  A lot of people I've known for a while distancing themselves like that, all of the silliness and threats.  Don't get me wrong, I don't blame the people for keeping there distance.  They have lives, families, kids to worry about - they certainly don't need to get in the middle of something like this silliness.  But it's hard not to feel alone at times.

But today here's this young man who steps up and says, "This is my responsibility.", even when truly, it really wasn't.  But he was going to own it anyway.  And suddenly, you know what, I wasn't tired anymore.  For the first time in a long time, I actually have some hope for the future.

Ok, again.. hard to explain I guess - but I just haven't seen a lot of folks from that generation who weren't, well, nigh on useless.  To see one, even one..

Well, it gave me hope.

347 loading to max capacity kills mag springs Posted by: jake at March 08, 2012 11:38 PM (VDbQY) Only if the magazine is misdesigned. Some are. Springs can be overcompressed, if a mag spring does that it's because the designer didn't give a shit. I've shot 1911 and AR mags left loaded to full capacity for 15+ years. No worries. Usually it's *cycling* that wears springs down - a *lot* of cycles if the spring is good quality. Ironically, loading and unloading magazines wears them faster. But not much faster. Unfortunately, every gun forum has a thread about this practically every day, and people come up with the *craziest* ideas about it! Almost no one actually asks people who make or test springs.

I however do see them quite regularly although they live about 115 miles away from my house. My sons are my life, they are everything to me, and a large part of me has died because I didn't get to raise them because of a divorce that happened over 10 years ago. Are they still in my life, of course and I have never been behind in child support. In fact, I am taking them to a Nickelback concert coming up. My divorce, in my view was my fault. No adultery, just fell out of love with my wife and she caught on over time. It took me 8 years, but I have since remarried. For 6 of those 8 years, I have had something that was mine that could never be taken from me, something that I have had since he was a 7 week old baby who was with me from day one, who loved me unconditionally. My wife doesn't understand even thought she liked my cat, how I feel. Yet for some reason, my ability to unburden myself to you guys, complete strangers, helps me in ways I have no idea why. Why is that? How could a cat mean that fucking much. Yet he was mine, all mine. Guess I have abandonment issues.

It's a big damn chunk of your life and you're not meant to *let go* of important things. People mostly belittle things like that either because they think they can't admit caring or they're just hollow sociopaths or something. Unsympathetic people really get on my nerves. Ok, again.. hard to explain I guess - but I just haven't seen a lot of folks from that generation who weren't, well, nigh on useless. To see one, even one..

Well, it gave me hope.

Well to get a protective order I'd have to know who did it, and I don't, so I don't really have a name to put on the order and sadly even if I did it won't do my car much good.

As it is I'm not really worried about the loon squad coming after me in person and that never really has been a huge concern.  As to my passwords, well I came from an IT background before working at my current job (thanks Obama!  You prick), so all my passwords are randomly generated and I change them usually every 30 days or so, so not much to worry about there.  My mailing address is a PO box, has been for years, but that has more to do with how our post office works in my area than anything else.

I really do appreciate the concern, don't get me wrong, but I'll be fine.  Besides, I've got the Wolverine backing me up.  Better than a whole team of Special Forces, IMHO.. lol..

I feel for you, Sam, and I know what you mean about this place and the comfort that comes from people you don't even know and will probably never even meet.  Keeps me coming back to the ONT.

410 ""Eddie" or "Ragnar" is about all you get from Atlas Shrugged. Audie is really appropriate; too bad that's just a car name now. Lest, we forgot."

Absolutely loved Atlas Shrugged - and the Fountain Head for that matter.  Honestly I watched the movie with no small amount of trepidation, I read Atlas Shrugged years and years ago, I was in High School the first time and I've reread it many times since.

It was always a personal favorite, and it just struck a chord with me like few other books ever have - and when I went to see the movie I must admit I wasn't expecting much.  All too often someone has made a movie out of a really good story, and just fucked it up beyond all recognition.

But the first part of Atlas Shrugged really did an excellent job of bringing the book to life.  I was very impressed, and I haven't been able to say that about a movie in a very, very long time.  Can't wait for part II.

419 Better late than never, I guess. I wasn't sure about posting a review of Yglesias' book to my Amazon account (you have to buy something to review so a shell account wasn't going to happen) and anyway I don't realy like the idea to begin with, but the whole Fluk thing has been increasingly pissing me off so I went ahead and did it.  I broke my rule of being subtle and/or funny, getting caught up in making sure that the first letter of each sentence spelled something meaningful to me.  Oh well.  It looks like the reviews have really slowed down, I guess he's not even worth anyone's time, pro or con.
---------------------------------
2 stars.

Before I get into the review, I should note that in general I enjoy perusing Yglesias's work.  Reading it gives me a good feeling about myself and my relative intelligence and I enjoy his blog with a cup of mint tea when I'm feeling low.

Eager for a self esteem boost and thinking that the ante would be raised at $3.99, I delved into "The Rent Is Too Damn High" and was left feeling somewhat guilty because it just felt too easy. I even agree with the premise somewhat (my rent is indeed too damn high, thanks in part to competition from all the newly foreclosed who, unlike myself, bought houses that they couldn't afford) but his solutions are somewhat ludicrous, his logic is strained and anyway I don't think there's anything new here.  Too much of this stuff is just a regurgitation of his blog output, and is not any better thought out or articulated.

Beyond the first few paragraphs there's just not much here and in fact some of it is downright weird. As other commenters have noted, there's a strange fascination with the male body (his own in particular) that seems completely out of place, and bizzarre references to Sasquatch (Bigfoot) and it's social habits (really Matt?).

Regardless, his basic points are weak and I think most would find it difficult to read through to the end.  Tough to spend $3.99 for this, unless your into cell phone boudoir photos or ape men I guess.

Read his blog if you need to get your Matt Yglesias fix and save your money for an almost gallon of gas.  I'm giving it two stars instead of one because I actually do like Bigfoot.

Peace.

I've done the "loaded for many months, use and reload repeatedly, loaded for months" cycle literally hundreds of times (given the number of magazines involved). The only bad springs I've had have been a couple of bad (defective) springs. If someone fully drained there car battery every few months to keep it from taking a set, I wouldn't say he's lying, I'd just say it's not a regular lead-acid car battery because they don't *do* that.

440 Hang in there Sam...I lost my best friend of 13 years about 15 months ago. A scrawny undernourished 1 year old bag of fur from the local SPCA. Paperwork said it was a spay female, so I named her Calypso after the nymph from Homer's Odyssey. After 3 months I took her to the vet for her first check up and I asked the vet about some different behavior id noticed and after a check up, my vet announced that she was a he. Ok so Id been calling him calypso for 3 months and I wasnt going to change it. I was also informed that he was a ragdoll breed of cat, which is one of the most awesome cat breeds around..they are called catdogs or puppy cats, because they act more like dogs than cats. To make a long story short I had to put him down after a year long bout fighting kidney and urinary tract problems. I brought that cat thru Katrina with no problems and he kept me sane during some of the most trying times of my 42 years on this earth. And I kid not when I tell you that I used to tell people " Id step over your body to get to that cat." And I mean it. I have gotten a new kitty...not a replacement, because there will never be another Calypso, but I have a 16month old female named Lily who is fitting in nicely..and yes she is a ragdoll.

sam you said it. you had him since he was a tiny baby. he was the child you got to raise. he was small and furry, but he rested in your arms and stared in your eyes with what feels like love. YOu played with him, he never betrayed you, always trusted you,  and accepted your love without question. he asked for nothing but kibble and a clean box.

This is a huge thing.

when my cat was having liver failure, i got food poisoning, and even though she was real sick, she dragged herself into bed with me and laid down on my body with her head on my chest and put her paw on my cheek. She stayed with me like that through the nightsnuggled up to me, keep me warm while i shivered with chills.  Things like THAT are why we love them so much. She died New years eve this year, and i thought i would lose my mind from grief, i havent felt so bad since my foster dad died... its natural.

449 The best remedy for grief over loss of a cat is to get another. There are plenty that need homes.

This last one I adopted is a rugged cuss. He is cute as the dickens, but not lovable. Not a lap cat. If ever he sits on your lap it is because HE wants you, not the other way around.

But he has cleared up a lot of rodent problems. They don't stand a chance around him. Rats, gophers, mice, voles, all gone. He earns his keep.

As it is Wolverine is protecting the "horrible, bigoted" white guy from the "innocent" hippies.. lol..

After you lived with any animal that long, they become part of the family.  You get used to having them around.  And I'm not sure if your cat was anything like the one or two I've had in the past, but there's just something about cats - even when they piss you off beyond all recognition your laughing about it a few minutes later, you just can't help it.  And believe me, I'm not a cat person.

So ya Sam, your going to grieve - and maybe some people won't get it.  But don't sweat it, you should be able to grieve.  It speaks a lot for your character that you do.

481 I take care of 3 cats -- 1 all black, short-haired, long-headed feral jerk named Shadow.  Then there's Buddy, a Maine coon/tabby mix.  Short legs, huge paws, long, wide body, HUGE head, eyelashes that look like he's wearing mascara, and some apparent orthodontia problems.  Kinda friendly - petable -  but shy.  He's trying to move in after 5-6 years of being a neighborhood cat.  Problem is, I'm not sure he knows what a litter box is and I already have a live-in, (former) wild cat #3, Dork (aka Dorkie Dork) who is quite possibly the only sweet Persian female on the planet.   Total snugglebunny/lapwhore.  She's great.  Nothing against dogs, but cats are easier to handle in a city if you live alone.

485 sorry to hear about your dad, I really am.

Thanks,
It was a while coming and we did get quite a few trips to upstate MN in these last few years.  I printed off a couple of dozen copies of him holding a 6.5# pike from the Canadian side of Lake Namakan from 3 years ago and brought them to the funeral.  Everybody took one.

He was up there every summer for 15+ years.  He mostly trolled for walleye when by himself vs. throwing top-water looking for the big pike.  He couldn't stay year before last.  I went back to close up at end of summer.  Using a little kiddy 2' rod to get the crappies.  Caught a little walleye that got swallowed by a monster.  Ten minutes of tugging her up slow, driving the boat over the fish like Jaws.  Look over the side and there's a fat green back the size of my arm.  13#s in the net, 10" walleye in it's throat and the line outside the top lip bone so the teeth never cut it.  "Boy I wish Dad was here to see this".

We'd take out his Dads tackle box once or twice a year and use the old, old stuff.  Grampa painted everything so they're all customized.

Thanks again,
ps: indoor kitteh just put her cute little paws on my knee...
and then stabbed me to get up and fill her bowl nowwwww

488 "SoS, thanks for another update. You're a good writer on top of everything else, and I really admire the way you've handled everything. You seem to keep your composure really well."

Well, I'm a pretty big guy - and years and years ago when I was much younger I worked as a bouncer in a wide variety of bars.  A few years after that I got a really fun job, repossessing cars for a living.

Unlike the reality TV shows that show those bozo's getting in all those fights and basically acting like idiots, both professions (especially repossession) really require you to keep your cool and act gracefully under pressure.  In bouncing, your not there to get in a fight or prove how tough you are, your there to keep any trouble from starting and if it does to get it outside as quickly and quietly as possible.

In repo, it's all about getting the car.  Again, your not there to prove how tough you are or any of that nonsense.  When the guy gets upset you don't say stuff like "You should have made your payments", etc.. Nope, you just explain that your sure it's all just a mistake, but he'll have to call the bank in the morning.  Your sorry, but your still going to have to take his car, because it's your job.  All you care about is getting the car, not proving the other guy wrong, etc.

Or as an old drill sergeant of mine used to say, "The only thing panic does is get you killed.  That's if your lucky.  Most likely it will get you and your whole fucking platoon killed."

So as far as Che-boy and the che-ettes, well there going to have to hit me with a much bigger brick to ruffle my feathers.  Besides, if I lose my cool, they win.  So, not going to happen.. lol..

But I really do have to head out.. I'm meeting with the MD in the morn, and I doubt it would impress her much if I feel asleep for the meeting.. lol..

492 Take heart in the fact that you had a relationship with your father, Dave. You and he remained part of each other's lives.

It's been years since I had any contact with any of my relatives. I don't know who's still alive and who's dead and who's had kids since we last spoke. I found my brother on Facebook, and sent him a message, but he never responded.

It's not a feud or anything; it's just that none of my relatives have ever been particularly close. Social media, oddly, hasn't helped the situation.

I'm not saying this to whine or to elicit pity; just... letting you know a particular way that you've been fortunate. Take heart in that.

498 Hey Sam,

One last thought.. then I really, really gotta go.  The cat was your best friend, and I'm sure the reverse was also true.

As your best friend I'm sure your cat wouldn't want you to be sad, or go for the rest of your life without another friend.  I realize that right now it's way too soon - you'd feel like getting another would somehow be wrong because it would somehow dishonor your friends memory.

But believe me, it won't.  Your friend wouldn't want you to be sad, wouldn't want you to try to honor them by closing yourself off like that.  So give it time.  And when the time is right, just say to yourself - you know, if I died I certainly wouldn't want my friends to close themselves off either.

It's to early yet for that - I realize.  But like I said, give it time.  When the time is right, you'll know.

Ok, really.. gotta go.. need some ZZZ's or I'm going to be worthless come morning.  Night all.

507 Yeah I'm going to buy a gun. Which is better, and why? Mankiller? 45 big slow, great energy transfer into people sized targets. All purpose? 357 fast, lots of penetration, long range.

508 516 #513: They're both nice. Any particular sort of .45? There's a few different types.

I'm just thinking about self-defense, etc.  A friend has something smaller, 22 or something, says 357 or 45 is what you need for stopping power, but both have really bad kick to them.

I'm a guy who paints and works on computers for a living, so the kick might be a factor.  Yes, yes, yes, I am a wuss, fine.

Sure you can hit your target with only 6 bullets? A .357 has great stopping power, but what if you need more ammo?

Posted by: Samuel Adams at March 08, 2012 09:29 PM (BvdQo)

514 BeckoningChasm:

Ok, seriously.. need sleep.. but, quick thought.  Self Defense - larger calibre is fine for outdoor use, but indoor?  Well if you have family members in more than one room, best self defense weapon is a shotgun especially for untrained use.

Loaded with bird shot it will not penetrate most interior walls, meaning no worries about hitting a family member with a stray round.  It's louder than hell and has great intimidation factor, and best of all you don't have to be a master class marksman to do the job, just point it in the general direction, squeeze trigger, repeat.,

Also you don't need a huge gauge or something long and unwieldy.  Pump or semi auto is your best bet.

If you need something you can carry, and not necessarily to be used in an interior environment, revolver is your best bet.   Lower ammo capacity but reliable as the day is long, easy to use and never jams.  If your going with a heavier calibre, then plan to spend some time at the range and practice a bit so you get use to the kick, etc.

Other than that, aim for center mass - and remember the three rules of all guns.  Never point it at anything you don't want to kill - always treat it like it's loaded even if your "sure" it isn't, and make sure everyone else that gets anywhere near it is well acquainted with the first two rules.

Ok, this time, seriously.. bed time.  Lol..

You are talking about speed loaders. With a semi-auto, I could shoot 45 rounds in the time it takes you to load a speed loader. Trust me, I have trained with both. I love the knockdown power of a .357, but I would rather have a .40 with three total mags then a magnum with a full cylinder and two speed loaders if the shit hit the fan. Look, I have been there done that with a revolver in a "ah shit" situation. Just feel more comfortable with more rounds and faster reloading.

Posted by: BeckoningChasm at March 09, 2012 01:24 AM (i0App) Umm, recoil not remotely similar between the two. The .45 will be considerably more gentle, especially if it's a semi-auto (yes, there are .45ACP revolvers - there are even semi-auto .357s). Basically from your questions I can tell you need some range time with guns before you buy, unless your need is urgent. Find a range that rents guns and try both. Since you mentioned recoil, see if you can find a Glock or Springfield XD .45, or something else with a polymer frame - less recoil. Also see if you can find a Chiappa Rhino .357 revolver. The low-axis design means much less muzzle rise and reduced felt recoil. They're kind of expensive.

Yeah, I can see how they'd be a little tricky....especially the newer ones I've seen, that have some plastic finger holds. .....We're lucky enough to have some old ones, all metal, and when kept nicely oiled they work like a charm.

I'm weird I guess, but I rather like revolvers. ....Have a new little 9 m that my hubby gave me a while back that I haven't even fired yet. ...I know. I should be spanked. I'll get to it this spring when the weather warms up.

535 I still like the 10mm auto, it's not an orphan but it's not common - you won't find it at wal-mart but you will at bigger gun stores, generally. You can't have small hands, it's a long cartridge. More power (potentially) than a .357 in an auto, but you have to keep an eye on the market and hope it doesn't fall off the manufacturer's lists. With a Glock 20 in a free state you get 15 rounds. With any caliber, research the loads you want to carry. It's not plug-and-play, ammunition makes a huge difference.

I started the series with ME2. I didn't even know there was a romance option, but I was hitting on that smoking brunette with the nice jugs because the dialog options allowed me to. I was shocked when my character tapped that shit. lol

Nah, I was just piqued by the translation of three little words into one little word.

If I had serious inherited money, I think I might have been a comparative linguist. There is so much information in words besides what they mean -- for instance: short words are generally the common names for things, whereas longer words are more nuanced....unless the language borrowed the longer word from another language. So "sleep" is pretty much what you expect, whereas "hibernate" is a very particular way to sleep.

I suppose from this one can deduce that the Swedes find nudism to be complicated (probably due to living in the frozen tundra that is Sweden).

I'm all for sexy women being sexy.....God knows it got my nerdy butt laid a time or two when I didn't deserve it. But not being realistic about a health condition.....

I had a young woman working in my group some years back, and was in a meeting when my #2 broke in and said, "XXX is having some kind of fit or something, but she said not to do anything about it." I extracted myself from the meeting and went down the hall to the office area, and found her upright, holding on to her desk, spasming, and blue as a fucking pair of blue jeans. I ordered my #2 to call 911 immediately.

Turns out, she had a heart valve problem going way back, and she'd let it go to the point where she was no longer a surgical candidate. She was only 24 or so, and any day could be her last.....because she'd been in denial for too long.

Soon afterward, she found another job and moved on.....unlike many of my other "guys", I've never had a reference request or an email or status update. She was a good kid.

695 Seems approriate for cthulhu. Just avoid anything in Randolf Carter land. I have a lot of death stories. I lost a relative to a serial killer and have known several serials before they were caught. Grew up in a house where a woman was murdered just before we moved in. You get a sweet deal that way. Guy was never caught. Used to go blind and deaf all the time as a kid. No one called an ambulance. I spent time in the teachers lounge instead. I lived with hitmen for a while. They didn't call ambulances either! Life is full of things that worry some people. I'm not worried about those things. IED, VBIED, EFP, small arms fire, etc. Those are things to worry about. Every thing else I can kick in the ass.

With this one, I feel ok about everything I did.....but she was one of "my guys", on my team......and so very, very mortal. She slipped off to another employer, so I don't have to worry about my having overworked her. It was a lifelong defect, so I didn't bring it on. She'd been ignoring it for years, and she'd worked for me for months.....

....but she went away and I never heard from her again.

It was her choice, and I have to respect that to a certain extent. But I've always wanted to do my best for all of "my guys" -- even those who hated my guts and/or were assholes about it......and she went off on an ice floe and drifted away.

715 Good Morning Morons:

I see Laurens County SC is showing us how to lose in 2012.  Keep in mind that this area is the heart of the bible belt country in SC which is a bible belt State in the whole anyway.

Sad thing about pop music.  It is no secret that there are more singles sold now than in the past. There are a hell of a lot more people now. We had 194 million in 1965.  We have 350 million now.  All those old big time acts are still playing and selling now.  How many of those "new" acts will be selling and playing 30 or 40 years from now?

Posted by: Vic at March 09, 2012 01:58 AM (YdQQY)

716 Not only are there a lot more people here than in the Beatles heyday, the price of a single on iTunes or Amazon is far lower. Especially if you adjust for inflation. You aren't getting a physical object like in the vinyl 45 days but these kids don't know the difference.

The Streisand thing doesn't surprise. The Linda Richman types worship her across multiple generations and buy, buy, buy. One advantage of that audience is they're less likely to know about torrents.

724 Yeah, there haven't been a lot of acts in the last decade or so that struck me as enduring hit makers. But sometimes one really good song marks a mark.

I've been watching this UK series William & Mary (2003-2006) and in the fourth episode a major plot revolves around a funeral for three teenagers who died together in a car crash and were known to both of the lead characters' children. (The whole series can be found in 12 minute chunks on YouTube. The funeral scene is Series 1, Episode 4, 4/4. http://tinyurl.com/7cnwjot )

I've never heard of this band Travis. Their song 'Why Does It Always Rain On Me' was apparent;y a hit in the UK but I'd never heard it before tonight. It made for a hell of a tearjerker. The small number of entries on Youtube and elsewhere suggests they peaked with that song but it's one I'll long remember in the context of that episode.

My thoughts.  And what is funny is my daughter doesn't listen to the "new" stuff either.  Don't know about Grandsons.

But take Katy Perry.  Her songs are sold by music videos which show ample cleavage.  When that cleavage is dragging the floor will she still sell?  I don't think so.

729 Moving the music conversation to news thread with link.

Posted by: Vic at March 09, 2012 03:01 AM (YdQQY)

730 I would gladly take Katy Perry if the offer is made. A DECON 4 treatment and a course of antibiotics and she should be thoroughly deBranded.

Of course, there is only one song of hers I can recognize. But the video had what I call a Ghostbusters moment. It starts off with a wedding scene and she is looking magnificent. When it comes the groom's turned to agree to the vows he locks up, as if he suddenly woke up and found himself there.

My feeling watching this was, if you find yourself at the altar with a woman like that, unless you have a serious fortune to defend, in the words of Winston Zedmore, "You say YES!"

I can look at my array of CDs and spot a fair number that might never have become classics for me if I'd been older when they first appeared. It's like that for a lot of content. A brand new novel can be really good but I doubt anything is going to affect me again like some of the greats when I was a kid. Roger Zelazny's Lord of Light is still an amazing book but all the more so for reaching me during my 'Golden Age of Science Fiction' as Damon Knight put it. I've read 'Dune' several time but nothing compares to that first time in my youth when I could actually a novel changed me a little as a person by making me think about some things for the first time.

A new work is going to have to be truly monumental to measure up against first hearing Sgt. Pepper or Dark Side of the Moon as a kid. Hell, when was the last album released that I feel compelled to only listen to in its entirety?

Posted by: epobirs at March 09, 2012 03:03 AM (kcfmt)

731 Yeah, nothing beats that first read on a good book. As for Dark Side of The Moon, if I am not mistaken that stayed on the top 100 album list for decades and may even still be on there now.

That shows where true greatness is.
