Still sick but I'm beginning to think I may recover. How come no one ever turned me on to the healing power of hobo brains before?
The shortest story ever written:
AP: Zimmerman Has Too Many Rights
The constituta-whateva-you-call it? Never heard of it.
MIAMI (AP) - George Zimmerman persuaded the police not to charge him for killing unarmed teenager Trayvon Martin, but the prosecutor has accused him of murder. Soon, armed with unparalleled legal advantages, Zimmerman will get to ask a judge to find the killing was justified, and if that doesn't work, he'll get to make the same case to a jury.
And note that writer of this article, Curt Anderson, is listed as "AP Legal Affairs Writer". Think about what that says about the level of knowledge among AP's non-legal-specialist writers. Also 5 points to your moron house for whoever can name the group at fault for all of this without reading the article.
Also: The Missing 93 Seconds in the Zimmerman-Martin Case
This begs an obvious question neither the prosecutor nor anyone else seems to want to address. After George Zimmerman stopped pursuing Martin, then spent at least 93 seconds in the same location providing more information to the dispatcher, why didn't Trayvon Martin simply go home? It appears that Martin had plenty of time to get where he was staying even at a walking pace.
Obviously, we don't and can't know why Martin didn't simply go to the home where he was staying.
Instead, according to Zimmerman's testimony, physical evidence, and all the eyewitness testimony, there was a confrontation between Martin and Zimmerman near where Zimmerman terminated his pursuit.
Martin could have easily covered the 70 yards or so to home in less than half a minute. So the question becomes what was he doing during this time?
EU Watch: Everything Not Forbidden Will Be Compulsory and Regulated
This time the crosshairs have fallen on hairdressers - who are now banned from wearing heels AND required to gossip:
A health and safety directive orders stylists to wear 'non-slip soles' when they are cutting hair and bans wedding rings and watches as unhygienic. The plans will see hairdressers told not to let staff do too many haircuts in one day to prevent 'emotional collapses'.
And the bizarre rules will tell salon workers to have a regular 'social dialogue' - code for gossipy chats - to encourage 'mental wellbeing' in the workplace.
I'm pretty sure that hairdressers were more free in the Soviet Union and possibly even Nazi Germany (at least the non-fab, non-Jewish ones were).
If you've ever bought Kobe beef in the US, you've been took, been hoodwinked, bamboozled, led astray, run amok, and also been meat-scammed:
You cannot buy Japanese Kobe beef in this country. Not in stores, not by mail, and certainly not in restaurants. No matter how much you have spent, how fancy a steakhouse you went to, or which of the many celebrity chefs who regularly feature "Kobe beef" on their menus you believed, you were duped. I'm really sorry to have to be the one telling you this, but no matter how much you would like to believe you have tasted it, if it wasn't in Asia you almost certainly have never had Japan's famous Kobe beef.
Remember the sensitivity police are a thousand miles away, chasing people who don't use gender-inclusive pronouns. Out here you are on your own. Don't imagine you can score any points by declaring that you are shocked or offended.Avoid unnecessary fuss. Stick to the essentials. "ROFL, you misspelled gawdelpus."
Likewise, keep to the point of the article you are commenting on. The breed of comment-leavers who habitually attempt to redirect the discussion to their own hobbyhorses are next to the makers of unsolicited sales calls in the fourth circle of hell, where they will be interrupted for eternity for their greedy misappropriation of other peoples' time.
Man Who Survived .558% BAC Tones It Down to a Mere .297%
Now the usual rule of thumb is that brain damage starts at 0.3% and coma/death begins at 0.4% but James Henderson says that's all pussy talk. When he's out apartyin', his blood alone could kill three ordinary men lightweights.:
James Henderson was arrested for public intoxication last month after being found unconscious in a ditch. He had an absurd .558% BAC but somehow managed to survive. He toned it down to .297% blood-alcohol level when he was arrested last week.
The Yahoo AoSHQ group. Bla bla bla.
And don't forget about the Job Bank.
And my twitter thang.

FTA:
Because commenting is often anonymous or pseudonymous, practitioners can be freed from many social rules as well as many of their own inhibitions. We all know the results. Boorishness. Bombast. Preening. On some sites, commenting becomes competitive snarling. Sometimes the dynamic in a comment thread consists of people reinforcing one anotherÂ’s edgier opinions and pushing the discussion towards an extremity that most of the individual participants wouldnÂ’t have reached on their own. Other threads consist of vitriolic exchanges between battled-hardened champions of opposing views.
I'm glad the ONT is free of all that!!!

I was always uneasy about Joss Whedon directing. Sure, he's a fan favorite but so what?
I'm glad he deleted the scene. It's like Jay Nordliner says at NRO, you don't wanna be hit up over the head with political stuff all the time. A movie like the Avengers should be escapist.

I recall a photo of Zimmerman being led into the police station in handcuffs. Is that when he began to "persuade the police not to charge him"?
And by the way, what the heck kind of stilted grammar is that? . . . . persuade not to charge . . . . how about persuade to not charge?

However, it's all flown out of my head.
My permanent houseguests blew in, and are heaving sighs and claiming to be highly put upon because food Rod and I paid for and cooked has (gasp! outrage!) been eaten by us!
Did I mention that they're going to leave a mess in my kitchen that I shall have to clean up?
Did I mention that they've lived under my roof since November of 2009?
Did I mention that the first year, they never paid rent? That they're perpetually late on the rent? That they give me attitude about rent? That they give me attitude about every bloody thing? That, when they sit down to dinner with us, they discuss things and people that neither Rod nor I know or care about?
I am up to my jawline and sinking.
Oh, did I mention that I got dinged on taxes because of them? No? Well, I bloody well did. I am not a happy Moronette, tonight.

hey, any Neal Stephenson readers here, can you tell me that I didn't just waste my $14 on the Kindle edition of Reamde and that it is actually a good book. Because I'm not more than 20 pages into it and already annoyed as hell that the main character was a draft dodger who morphed into a marijuana drug smuggler across the Canadian border, who then morphed into a money launderer.
And no, I didn't spoil anything for non-readers. I think anything that is available in the "free sample" on amazon is fair game.

Robert and ParanoidGirlInSeattle:
I got hooked on Reamde about 10 pages in. Yeah, Richard was a draft dodger and a dope smuggler but he's turned into an allright guy. I expect it will be like Crytonomicon- a complicated , interesting , entertaining plot that toward the end. you can't figure out how the hell he will wrap it up in twenty pages. But he does. After reading Crytonomicon I wanted to be Randy Waterhouse, and not just because he's rich and gets the cute girl.

A pirate walks into a bar with a big ship's wheel sticking out of his pants. The bartender says, "Excuse me, sir, but do you know you have a ship's wheel down the front of your pants?" And the pirate says...
"Aaargh, it's driving me nuts!!"

It's my house, with, of course, Rod. Just the two living with us - he has a job (it's with one of those "financial" groups that you've probably run across, which keeps him running himself ragged), and she...well, I'm afraid to ask.
I'm the main bread-winner. But that's not new.

Perhaps the kindest thing for your friendship would be to cut your financial losses an offer to help set them up in their own place.
I can't imagine a friendship surviving the resentment that comes from being taking advantage of.

So, I was a bit disappointed when I was so quickly turned off when I started Reamde, because he is one of my favorite writers. I'll keep reading, since I spent money for it (though not really because it was an Amazon gift card from Christmas) but...

I'd throw Van Halen (though I don't particularly like them, they deserve consideration), Metallica, The Cars, Cheap Trick, The Allman Brothers Band, Skynyrd, and a number of others into the mix before most of that list.

If he was so afraid of Zimmerman like she said he told her, then why call her? Why not call 9-1-1 or at least call his brother for backup?

He scarcely had no reason. He saw his older brother come home with no legs in an era with a terrible lack of appreciation for such loss by his peers.
My impression is that there is some pretty intense anger over Vietnam in Stephenson's family. Not against military service but against the abuse of those who served by those in power. This comes up in several books, including the George Bury titles.

Dianna's one and only hard-and-fast rule of decent familial relations: DO NOT, EVER, INVEST WITH FAMILY.
I have given my brother money - and it's never come back.
I have been scammed out of money by my mother - and that will never, ever, come back.
I don't resent it, in either case. I just refuse to repeat the experience. Investment, where family is concerned, is a lie.
You give them money. If it comes back, that's wonderful. But it usually won't. So, if you're giving 'em money, regard it as gone.

oh and wurdi i get you on not wanting another so soon. I didnt want one eather, but the surviving cat, my naked pusseh, was very sad and afraid to leave my bedroom after her roomies all died (old age got them both but the younger of the old ladies passed first.)
So Grim felt bad for her and wanted her to get a companion, and her breeder had a defective kitten born with fur--snow white like my beloved cat that passed at Christmas. So he got him for me and named him After Maurice Sendak the man who wrote "where the wold things are" because everyone has a pet named Max. Eventually i think she will forgive him but she does come out of my room now.

Because everyone on the field has had the opportunity to get up to full speed so every collision has much higher momentum.

Tommy Emmanuel, Danny Gatton, Chet Atkins, Stevie Ray, Marty Friedman, Wes Montgomery...and the list goes on and on. I can't pick the best out of even that short list I made, because they're all otherworldly. If you don't know Tommy or Gatton, get thee hence to youtube. Danny Gatton was probably some kind of guitar-werewolf prodigy, and Emmanuel is clearly not human. Unlike other technicians, they kill at melody and phrasing (Eric Johnson excused, as he is also incredbly gifted technically and musically).

"The same can be said for many plays in football."
No, it can't. The kickoff is the only play where everyone on the field has had the opportunity to get up to full speed. In fact, it's kind of the point of the play. Football is at a weird point now where it is being pulled in opposite directions. On the one hand, players are objecting to some of the new safety measures and saying "just let us play". On the other, the union and the retirees are saying "you're going to pay us big time for all the risks we took". The owners might have to try something unusual - like getting rid of helmets.

WADR, tell that to the receiver who caught the pass and is running down the sideline and a guy comes at him at full speed and knocks him out of bounds.
Tell that to the guy who goes unblocked to the QB, who has taken about a 6-step drop and doesn't see the guy and he crashes at full speed into him from behind.
Soon football will be reduced to watching a bunch of guys playing Madden football on a video screen at the stadium so no one gets hurt.

"WADR, tell that to the receiver who caught the pass and is running down the sideline and a guy comes at him at full speed and knocks him out of bounds."
One receiver, one defender. Not sure what is so hard to follow here: on the kickoff everyone - that's 22 players - have had the opportunity to reach full speed. Do you remotely understand probability? The odds of injury increase substantially. I'm not arguing for eliminating the play, I'm pointing out a problem of future liability the NFL faces, and if they don't solve it the league goes away. My suggestion is the counterintuitve one: get rid of some, if not all, of the protective gear (which ultimately ends up used as weapons). Rugby is just as manly a sport, but because the players don't feel so invincible in their gear, they play within their physical limits. Were the NFL to make a switch like this I think there would be a lot more minor injuries (and uglier players), but it would mostly take the life-ending injuries out of play.

I know that there are a lot of football players who have been severely injured playing the sport. Not to sound like a heartless bitch, but it isn't like the players don't know they could be seriously hurt. Most of them have been playing football since they were little kids, and if they don't know the risks by the time they get to the NFL, well...
I'm a football fan and I want something else to be done, as logprof said, better equipment, whatever it takes to keep the game safe without putting the players in pink tutus or reducing the game to eventually giving each team the ball on the other team's 5 yard line and seeing if they can score. You know, so no one can get up to full speed and hit somebody too hard.

There used to be a couple of jokes, often told in the context of dating much younger women. One ended with the punchline, "Paul MacCartney was in a band before Wings?" and the one about remembering where you were when Kennedy was shot and getting the reply, "Ted Kennedy was shot?"
Neither of those jokes work anymore. In a few years middle-age men will be trying to pick up girls for whom 9/11 has no more meaning than any other historical event. And those middle-aged men will be too young to remember when Kennedys getting shot at was a bad thing.

You didnÂ’t hear about this is the media, but on the weekend of March 24th and March 25th at least seven white people were brutally beaten by mobs of blacks in Grand Rapids, MI. Five of the victims filed police reports. At least two other victims exist, and there are probably others. The local media has refused to report the cruel attacks and the authorities are resisting any serious charges.

But wait, there's more:
All three of the black males then attacked him on the porch. They yelled “this is what you deserve you white piece of shit.”

Mind you, she might well have read something that "backs up" her optimism; there's a poll out there to suit any style and desire. Can we just adjudge that the polls fluctuate so wildly there's no sense in paying them heed? I wouldn't be surprised that Obama's such a bear to be around when numbers aren't going his way that his own staff "persuades" amenable outfits to tinker till they get pleasing results, just so all can go on with their lives without tearing their hair out.
As for the GSA -- wasn't the last time they rated the big headlines during the Carter administration, because of fiscal scandals? Yet another way Obama seems to be James II. And you know how that king ended up.

Me: "Seriously Principal Canhardly, I have always been interested in the Tits Ovoid. It is an extremely important body of work, and I was only sharing my enthusiasm with the rest of the class."
Principal Canhardly: "I can't wait until they invest speed dial. I am ruining my wrist dialing your parents all the time."
