How Far Back Does Your Memory Go?
Most people can only recall back to maybe age 4 or 5 or so and it's long been the conventional wisdom that children aren't able to form permanent useful memories until nearly 5 years old.
But I have definite memories going back to when I was just 2 years old - one of my father standing next to his Karmann Ghia in the garage one morning and another of an ivy patch on the hill behind our house.
Now these are more like mental snapshots than full situational memories but since no photographs of these exist and I've verified the details with my parents, I'm quite sure these are coming from my own memories - and not say the Tyrell Corporation.
But it now turns out that I'm probably not as abby-normal as I assumed:
Up until the 1980s, almost no one would have believed that Isaiah still remembers Iris. It was thought that babies and young toddlers lived in a perpetual present: All that existed was the world in front of them at that moment. When Jean Piaget conducted his famous experiments on object permanence-in which once an object was covered up, the baby seemed to forget about it-Piaget concluded that the baby had been unable to store the memory of the object: out of sight, out of mind....According to Patricia Bauer, a professor of psychology at Emory who studies early memory, the general consensus was that a 3-year-old child's memory was a jumble of disorganized information, like your email inbox without any sorting function: "You can't sort them by name, you can't sort them by date, it's just all your email messages."
The past gets stickier, too: Memories no longer slip away after a couple of months. Children a few months under 2 retain memories of experiences a year earlier-half their lifetime ago. But they won't retain those memories into adulthood: No one remembers their second birthday party. For a few reasons-nascent neural structures, the lack of knowledge to make sense of early experiences, the lack of language to represent those experiences-it may be impossible for any part of our lives before, say, 24 months to stick around into adulthood. The average earliest memory-fragmented and lonely, but real-doesn't date until around 3½ years of age.
So what's your earliest memory?
The Cultural Significance of "Convoy"
I have faint memories of the CB craze of the 70's - mostly consisting of asking my parents for a CB radio and being told firmly no. I so wanted to be able to talk to the public without having to go through the media but was stymied (then just 5 or 6 years later I got a 300baud connection to a university mainframe and never looked back).
I wasn't alone in this and that begins to explain why the song "Convoy" captured the whole zeitgeist of the period. And here Christopher Taylor makes the case that CBs were a proto-internet of the 70's and 'Convoy' was a proto-meme.
Sometimes its difficult to look back and understand why some things were popular or even liked. .But others you can figure out, if you understand the setting and what happened around then. And by understanding those cultural events, it helps understand what happens today. Take the song "Convoy" by C.W. McCall.
And all that trucker CB jargon became part of the popular culture a while. Some of them survive to this day, most people know what a bear is in this context, what 10-4 means, and what an 18-wheeler signifies. There are a lot of CB slang sites on the internet, such as CB Gazette. The jargon has expanded over the years, and still is in use. Its interesting to me that this goofy song turned into a national phenomenon; these days it would be an "internet meme" with kids making pictures involving it on sites like 4Chan
'cause we got a little ole convoy rockin' thru the night
Yeah, we got a little ole convoy, ain't she a beautiful sight?
Come on and join our convoy, ain't nothin' gonna get in our way
We gonna roll this truckin' convoy 'cross the USA
Convoyyyyy
Well now there's an app that'll let you find out.
Mensa's official Brain Test app was pretty successful when it was released for iOS devices back in 2010, and now - over a year later, it looks like the app will be making its first appearance on other platforms. Mensa announced today that Brain Test is now available to download on Android, BlackBerry and Nokia mobile platforms.Apparently users who do well in the game should feel confident in taking the Mensa Admission Test - so it's supposed to be a good indication of whether you should consider taking the test or not. Users can mark their improvement through a local score table and even share their test scores on Facebook.
Ranking American Novelists in 1929
According to a poll of literary critics taken 83 years ago. And there were a surprising number of women at the top. I guess the patriarchy was too preoccupied to oppress the womyn writers at the time.
( 1.) Willa Cather (30, 0.96)
( 2.) Edith Wharton (30, 0.78 )
( 3.) Theodore Dreiser (31, 2.18 )
( 4.) James Branch Cabell (29, 1.85)
( 5.) Sherwood Anderson (30, 1.54)
( 6.) Sinclair Lewis (31, 2.36)
( 7.) Thornton Wilder (24, 1.97)
( 8.) Glenway Wescott (22, 1.95)
( 9.) Joseph Hergesheimer (30, 1.67)
(10.) Zona Gale (29, 1.43)
(11.) Booth Tarkington (29, 1.94)
(12.) Ellen Glasgow (29, 1.99)
(13.) Elizabeth Madox Roberts (20, 2.28 )
(14.) Ruth Suckow (27, 2.02)
(15.) William McFee (27, 1.85)
The critics agreed most strongly on two writers - Edith Wharton and Edgar Rice Burroughs, author of the Tarzan books. They agreed that Wharton is wonderful and Burroughs is "not worth reading." Harold Bell Wright, the preacher who wrote The Winning of Barbara Worth, and Thomas Dixon Jr., author of The Clansman, joined Burroughs at the bottom of the heap.
I had to read Ethan Frome in high school and to this day I still regret the precious hours of my life that were wasted on it.
In case their silly moniker wasn't self-explanatory, mangagement rings (or engagement bands as many men prefer to call them) are the male counterparts to the traditional rings women wear to indicate they are engaged to be married. In a number of other countries, it has long been customary for men (in addition to women) to wear engagement rings. However, the practice has only recently gained traction in America.According to a 2011 study by MensHealth.com and TheKnot.com, 5% of men are currently wearing mangagement rings and 17% say that they are open to the idea.
A 97-year-old man was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of trying to kill a female relative by slashing her with a sword after he walked about 100 meters to her home using his walker, police said. According to the police, Yoshio Kawamura cut the 84-year-old woman's left hand at about 9 a.m. while saying, "I'll kill you." The sword had a 50-centimeter blade.

You probably didn't even know there was something wrong with your lady-tint which is driving men away. Well not to worry - it can now be fixed:
A 25-second TV advert for Clean & Dry Intimate Wash is being advertised on prime time television, and shows a woman using the product to lighten her sexual organs to please her man.The product has attracted condemnation on Twitter and blogging sites, with one (male) user branding it 'the ultimate insult' and others bemoaning the extent of discrimination against darker skin tones.
Described as 'unique', the product is apparently designed to keep the skin 'fresh and protected from infection all day' with the added bonus that it will 'brighten darkened skin in that area...making it many shades fairer.'

I have off-and-on flash-memories of when the family first moved to America. Winter of '78. The memories get more focused starting at first grade ('80).
One of which memories was voting in the school mock election. I was in Massachusetts... my vote was, of course, for Reagan.

My first conscious memory is walking to school with my older sister in 1968 in Dayton, Ohio. I was in kindergarten, and there was a huge dog (he was probably really tiny) behind a chain link fence on the route who would scare the shit out of me every day. The school was only three blocks from our house, but I dreaded that walk for the 18 months we lived there.
A shame Presidizzle Obama wasn't my neighbor back then. He'd have taken care o' that dog, right quick, I imagine.
Does anyone remember that epic October 1982 issue of National Lampoon called "The Utterly Monstrous Mind-Roasting Summer of O.C. and Stiggs"? I swear I must have laughed so hard while reading that issue that warm Old Milwaukee squirted out my eyes, ears, and nose. What a classic.

Item 1: "A 25-second TV advert for Clean & Dry Intimate Wash is being advertised on prime time television, and shows a woman using the product to lighten her sexual organs to please her man."
Item 2: White folks are continually trying to find sun to lie down in, even to the extent of buying condominiums in Cabo, in order to darken their skin.
What gives? And if a white woman does both, won't that look pretty silly? Big patch of white cooch surrounded by bronzed skin?

not in more northern latitudes. In Ireland, with the right conditions, you can find the end of a rainbow. They stop about 15-20 feet off the ground. If you get too close, the 'mirage' disappears, but you can get pretty close.

I remember bits of things from before 5. I remember when my grandfather was sick and my mom tried to put me in a preschool class in Texas while she was helping her mom and it was awful and nap time was mats on the floor and we went for a walk and there were snakes. I only went once. Then I stayed with my mom.
I have this weird memory of a very high bridge through a city, it was one of those that steeply banked too. It must have been somewhere between Texas and Ohio. I used to have nightmares of that bridge. I don't know why.
I also remember getting patted on the head by the bank robbers as they walked down the street after robbing the bank in the next block and my Greek grandma looking on, but then later neither one of us were able to communicate with the investigators because I was too young and she didn't speak English.

It is a very detailed memory. My mother was at the hospital and I had some sort of stomach ailment, so my grandmother had put newspapers all over the floor in case I threw up. We drove to the hospital and I stood in the front seat next to my grandfather. (My father was working a construction job and was out of town.)
When we got to the hospital, I saw nuns with the French wimples (Order of St. Vincent) and being from a Protestant family, I thought they were angels. Then I threw up on the lawn of the hospital and I even remember seeing the letters from the alphabet vegetable soup.
I also remember the cat getting in bed with me in a crib, so I couldn't have been very old.

summer of 1954. I'm in the backyard, crawling around in a kiddie pool which probably has 2 or 3 inches of water in it, and yelling, "I'm swimming! I'm swimming!"
I'm sure of the year because my sister (born October 1953) was still a fretful babe-in-arms, nowhere near walking yet, being held by my teenage cousin.
Girl Thursday, prayers going up.

The Mensa is not what it used to be when it started. I quit high school twice but for want of something to do loaded me and a 6 pack into the car and drove 18 miles up the highway to the testing city, found the place, (only had 4 on the road) and did pretty well. 99th percentile area, got the invite for that group, which is a different part of Mensa affilation, but only signed up for the regular brain shagging. All because I wanted to join their discussion groups on chess-games-and sex years before I had AOL access. Still have membership, but screw the bastages, they want to save bums, not hunt them.

Honestly, I can somewhat see the SS agents' point. "Escorts" are supposed to be classy. "Escorts" get referred by agents, like the Emperor's Club in NYC. They don't troll nightclubs. Nightclub trolls are a step up from streetwalkers. No way should they be asking for escort rates.
Oh, yeah, and "escorts" don't tend to have misunderstandings about the bill. When you hire a date at the Emperor's Club, you know what you're getting for your cash. Spitzer's fling was not one of his 99 problems until a third party dropped the dime on him.
This tells me that the Colombian ho's weren't Firefly-esque "Companions"; they were just ho's, and at least one of them figured these yanquis a ripe target for a shakedown.

My earliest memory is rolling a plastic army Jeep and connected cannon behind it across the floor while my mother was ironing and watching Jack La Lane.
It wasn't my earliest memory, but I was not quite 4 when I came across a Wehrmacht helmet and belt that my dad had brought back as war souvenirs from his U.S. Army-all-expenses-paid trip to Normandy in 1944. My mom found me trying on the helmet and thought it was funny-- it was so large it came down over most of my face. The belt was long enough to go around me twice. Must have belonged to a really overweight Kraut.

Most complaints aren't about the lack of an option for a happy ending, but that it makes no sense. There are lots of bizarre logic flaws.
One of my favorite reviews that rips into the problems with the ending is by the Angry Joe Show on YouTube.
However, Bioware has committed to a free DLC this summer that will explain the ending better. They won't make it happier, but they will make it make more sense.

Its not that bad. Really, the whole series was kind of stupid. It had a charm like some kind of sci-fi channel B movie, but the story was so generic who cares how it ends.
The part where you cure the "genophage" felt like the ending for me. Everything after that was just wrapping up a silly Star Wars knock off.

(1) This "revelation" wasn't new and yet somehow it was. How much stuff will we learn about Obama now that people are willing to listen?
(2) He wrote that passage (and I do think that was in his original manuscript that Ayers kept in) for a number of reasons: (a) It made him look worldly, as you say, and cool. See how he just appraises their relative taste merits. (b) It made Lolo look like a dumb backwards hick. And he hated Lolo. (c) It played to his view of himself as king of the underclass. He was among them, but he was not of them. And they should be grateful.

Three little problems with the video: Hitler's dog was named Blondi; she was a female German Shepherd (ok, no bitch jokes); and she was fully grown when Hitler poisoned her shortly before he offed himself (he wanted to be sure the cyanide capsules he had been given worked). Eva Braun supposedly hated Blondi (insert bitch joke here) and reportedly used to kick her under the table when Adolf wasn't looking.

Prior to the surgery, I remember being dropped off in a nursery/toy room and being deathly afraid of the bigger kids which were probably 3-4 years old. The room had those bright-colored plastic hollow alphabet blocks that were becoming the rage in the mid 60's.
I also remember waking up in my crib post-surgery with splints on both arms so I wouldn't be able to touch my eyes. I remember the crib was huge and had a lid on it so I couldn't escape. I remember the panic I felt because I could not suck my thumb nor hold the satin edge of my blanket to my cheek for comfort.
I told my mom about these memories some 30 years later, and she was floored about how much I had remembered. I guess that some types of trauma are burned into memory no matter what age.

Second-earliest memory: my baby brother being brought home from the hospital when I was two and a half. His little pecker looked like a thumb with a bandage on it (he'd just been circumcised in the hospital). But I already knew that you didn't ask about "down there," so I pointed instead to his unhealed navel and said, "It looks like a raisin on his tummy!" which they thought was so cute.
Thirty years later, I finally told my sister this, and she said, "My God, you do remember."
Yup.

Muslims have gotten a lot more militant since the 1970s gas crisis and especially since 9/11. So much so that we can't conceive of what it was like before then.
In Muslim countries, the tourist areas of cities were as western as Europe. Only the most rural and backward women wore head coverings. Iranians and Turks drank and Asian "Muslims" were more culturally Asian than Muslim.
It wouldn't surprise me if Lolo were a Muslim, but wouldn't fuss about eating pork or even dog if it wee culturally relevant.
But I'm starting to think it was very much made up. Unfortunately for Obama, what's he going to do? Claim that somebody else wrote his book?

Any culture that breeds people that don't turn to human-shaped Play-Doh in the presence of a happy Lab is just not worth the time of day. Chisel that bit of wisdom in stone - no matter how bad your day was, a happy Lab makes it better 100 of 100 tries. Sure, they jab you in the junk with their noses, and jump and slobber and paw at you, but deep down, it's still pretty great. Last I checked, goats and sheep don't fetch, don't hug, and won't wrestle in a platonic way like labs will. I've heard the goats and sheep do wrestle in eastern lands, but they always lose the matches in a certain manner that will not be described here.

- Waking up in my crib in a sky blue room with a small window high on the wall.
- Watching a Coast Guard helicopter land in a field across the street from my house. I remember the orange and white, which is how I know it was a Coast Guard helicopter. I was captivated until the blades stopped turning.
- Dad arranged to get me on a fireboat for some celebration or the other. Before we got on the boat, we hung out at the firehouse, where I was introduced to the magic of root beer. I was enjoying myself on the boat until they turned on the water sprayers, which made a horrible noise. I started crying. I recall feeling bad because I thought my crying must have disappointed my dad.
All of those had to have occurred before I was 4.

If I had to bet, I'd put him on the same spiritual path as all his fellow-travelers - if not full-blown acknowledged atheist (at least to himself), he's almost certainly a secular humanist who vaguely alludes to the possibility of a higher power, but prefers to focus on the day-to-day task of self-worship. If the God-guy would ever bother showing up, Barry might throw some love his way, but until then, he has a mirror, and it's all making sense.

I have very clear memories from the age around 24 mos. Playing with my dad's typwriter in a dormer, watching my mother brush her hair in an alcove that could only be reached by a secret passage; of the dangerous gap over the stairwell, of my mother looking for our cat, going out the garage that JUST SMELLED AWfUL, and my mom crying her eyes out and digging with a shovel. Poor Pooh-Bear I surmised although I didn't exactly know what the shovel was for. We had a rose tree and a swing set and the field in back ofour house contained a pony.

You only would be a hypocrite if your campaign staff had been recently all cryin' "lookee at this person putting a dog on top of his car, how horrible!" to gain votes in a Presidential election. Obama is the hypocrite. Feel free to jump on up the wagon, guilt-free. (You don't even have to frame your jokes as morally accusatory you know!)

Blonde jokes are still making the rounds and they are decades, if not centuries, old.
The main thing is that the dog eater joke personalizes the Zero and makes it possible to break the artificial reverence granted him by the media. Once that mask falls, it will be easier to make other and more pointed arguments against his policies as he has been stripped of the god-like ivy league intellectual status.

This guy is hoping the stupid yet fun dog-eating meme finally breaks through and allows our President Xerxes to be ridiculed like every normal man. After all, Saul did say that ridicule was the most effective weapon. This could get fun...what else didn't get mentioned in 2008? I can think of drug use, silly hats, attraction to radical assholes, daddy issues, etc. If the Breitbart torch is taken up properly, we can smoke 'em all, R and D, but most importantly POTUS / SCOAMF.

Dave Letterman's show tonight is a repeat from March (I'm watching for Jennifer Lawrence's interview & The Shins perform later) and what are they talking about? Some lady named Gail Collins is on talking about Romney's dog-on-the-roof! From March. Letterman even had an animation of said incident. The Dems have really lost it when the only thing they can get Mitt on is this non-story.

Posted by: The Dude at April 18, 2012 08:33 PM (M8yfa)
For my entire childhood, this short series of tableaux floated around my head like a slide show. The start was an image of a low building surrounded by parking, and the end was me rubbing my rear flank and thinking that the man in the room was a very bad man. This was unconnected to anything, and I had no idea of its significance, or indeed if it had any at all.
So when I was thirteen or so, my Mom and I flew back upstate to our hometown (we'd moved when I was five) to visit my grandparents. While we were there, we took Grandma to a doctor's appointment. As we pulled into the lot, I realized that this was the building in my old mental slide show. I said, "Hey, I recognize this place."
Mom stopped the car right there and looked at me, mouth wide open. After a bit she said, "You haven't even been in this part of town since you were six months old. This is where my obstetrician was!"
So there it is.

My father got caught up in the CB crazy when I was a little kid. Bought a CB and a CB talking guide. Kept trying to talk to the truckers while the family was driving down the road on a trip. "How's the weather up there?" "Any smokies or brown paper wrappers around?" Don't know what was more painful, hearing him talk on it or the silence afterward. He finally realized he needed a handle. We discussed it as a family and we all voted on the best name. A decision was made. Then all the luggage blew off the top of the car.
The luggage was back in place on top of the car. (2nd time) The Red Rooster took the wheel. As we pulled back onto the highway the CB suddenly came to life.
"That blue stationwagon is never gonna get anywhere if it keeps droppin' its load!"
My father turned off the CB.

My interest in VWs started with an early memory, althought not before I was 4. I was about 5 or so. We lived in Munich (Fort McGraw, which was closed in the first round of BRAC). This would be about '69 or so.
There was an old beetle parked in a parking lot near our building. Black. Split rear window. The glass was all cracked into tiny pieces, although the windows were still holding together somehow. I recall a funny-shaped hole low on the back of the thing that went deep inside the car; looking in there, you could see bits of engine.
Now, of course, I know that funny-shaped hole was for the crank, making the beetle a pre-'49 model.

When I was 10 years old.....
Just before I drifted off to sleep, if I stared hard enough at the multi-paned window across my room, especially on moon-lit nights, the window would begin to shrink backwards. Slowly at first, then picking up speed until I found myself in some type of "Flying" dream with the sound of deep base drums,(which now in hindsight was the beating of my heart). So cool were these events....so very cool! I always had the best sleep when it started out like this...
From my youth.......

That's a very good point, so either Obama can deny it and indirectly confess that his books where ghost-written by Bill Ayers or Obama really did eat dogs as a kid and he can try to explain that little thing away.

Obama did the audiotape for that book, did he not? So he read those words out loud into recording equipment. Not only would he have to admit the ghost-writing if he denied the incident happened, he'd be admitting he was happy to repeat the yarn himself.

Going by my own little experiment...I posted some of the jokes on FB, where I have a ton of lib "friends" that I enjoy toying with....the only reaction I got was from my Libtard brother, with the usual scolds (Obama was a kid in a foreign culture, Romney is Clark Griswold, Romney is desperate, etc). Either the rest of the libs are too embarrassed or don't care. Crickets from the non-politcal people.
Believe me, I'm a certified AOS moron who's been making fun of Obama since he was elected. The teflon around the guy is very frustrating. This whole kerfuffle may make us feel good, and it may help to crack the clay feet of Obama. Here's to hoping the damn bursts.

The drug house we've been reporting on for 5 month just got the giant SWAT team /batter down the door treatment tonight. I've been in contact with the local police for months and they actually did something tonight.
The enforcement unit was just....so sooo... cool. Ever see the series "The UNIT'?
It was those guys. I'm still swooning.
The entire neighborhood lined the streets and hooted and hollared. Sick to death of Heroin and meth ruling the day. The worst part was the drug addled "father" wasn't feeding his kids. They were going door to door begging for food. And witnessing the heroin den shooting up on school nights. And soiling themselvses because they couldn't get into the bathroom because the junkies be shooting up.
Oh, and the top performing commercial realtor in the city owns the joint. Oh yeah, that little tidbit.

No disagreement here. I just don't think these fuckers will ever change until they are forced to do so.
In the end, money is just a representation of time. When someone is empowered to spend all of our time before we die (and actually chooses to do so) we become slaves. It is a built-in flaw in our system. I truly fear that the only way we won't end up slaves is if those in power now actually start fearing how we will react to the news. And no, I don't think you are wrong about the aftermath either. We are already boned.

I just want the whole movie to be invaded suddenly by another movie and quashed. Say, the vampires and werewolves are all out in the forest having a war over who gets to coddle Bella when BAM -- a ship lands full of alien zombies. Bella gets reverted to human form and stuck as an impoverished single mom who goes around telling anyone who will listen that she used to be an immortal with supernatural powers who was married to a vampire, and have everyone go "Yeah, now take your meds." She then goes on welfare and eventually gets a job as a manicurist. The End.

The left seems intent on normalizing thuggish and suspicious behavior from certain communities that hold up as ideals thuggish and suspicious behavior.
Hoodies for everyone!
People used to understand that clothes make the man. And when you wear clothes that scream "criminal" you're gonna get treated like one.
I wear clothes that say "Wish I were Hugh Hefner."

Well, the publicity part of it certainly is. What do you think the outrage meter would register if the races were reversed in that horrid story about the Black nurse who killed the white woman and then stole her 3-day-old baby?
Posted by: the new, improved arhooley -- now with 10% more cynicism! at April 19, 2012 12:52 AM (MafXX)
So pretty much just flip flops..
story about the Black nurse who killed
Or the one with the white couple raped, burned and mutated by 3 blacks??? where was the beer meeting and daily pics on that one... I hear ya AR it's all about the left's need to victimize....

This isn't going to be a well received notion.

I have lots of memories from when I was 2-3. That because we moved about when I was about 3 1/2, so I know that all the memories of our first house are from when I was 2 or 3. When my dad drove with me to college I walked around the outside of that first house in my mind describing the whole thing. He remembered it the same way.
Some things I remember taking place over time at that first house, like the multiple times my dad made bows and arrows for me from the bushes out by the patio. He didn't want to be pestered constantly so he would tell me no, but a few times he indulged me. Definitely that one goes back to when I was two, and I still remember it.
If we hadn't moved I probably wouldn't be able to date any of those memories. I bet a lot of people would be able to remember that far back if they had moved.

Earliest memory was my grandmother's funeral when I was two. I have clear snapshots of being in the car on the way to the funeral and of the casket. I know I was two because my brother wasn't born yet. Mom thinks I remember because she was upset and that made it traumatic.
