"Teaching as a Subversive Activity"
Here Zombie exposes what goes on at a typical educational conference - this time at UC Berkeley:
Because this was a presentation aimed at education insiders only, the lecturer, retired professor H. Douglas Brown from S.F. State, seemed perfectly willing to let the cat out of the bag about political indoctrination on college campuses. Fortunately, I had my trusty camera with me, so I was able not only to snap a few pictures but also record several key portions of his speech, which I found so eye-opening that I felt the general public deserved to hear it as well....Let it be noted that Professor H. Douglas Brown is no wild-eyed extremist; in fact, he's rather bland and respectable and not the most thrilling of speakers, as you will soon hear. But that's what made his presentation so disturbing: radical and self-admittedly "subversive" attitudes that affect the future of society are discussed with matter-of-fact nonchalance.
The main drawback of Professor Brown's verbal style (at least from my point of view) is that he often resorts to the academics' tried-and-true escape hatch, which is to rephrase statements as questions, so as to have plausible deniability if later confronted. Thus, for example, instead of just flatly saying something like "We should indoctrinate students with leftist ideologies," he asks "Should we indoctrinate students with leftist ideologies?" and only after five minutes of talking in circles eventually concludes "Yes."
Read the whole thing but I just want to point out that is a classic example of a common (perhaps even universal) affectation on the left: which is that they are all oppressed dissidents in the US and their most minor protests somehow make them members of the brave underground American Maquis.
Even when in fact they're actually in charge of large parts of the establishment and the worst oppression they face daily is having to park in the old faculty parking structure which requires an extra 2 minute walk to get to the fair-trade coffee co-op in the morning.
But then it's always more fun to live out a fantasy of being a secret freedom fighter against The Man rather than say the less thrilling reality of trying to do your job well and sweating the little details that keep the wheels of society running.
Amish Spring Break: Girls Gone Kinda English
I had no idea but it turns out that Pinecraft, FL is a popular spring vacation destination for Amish and Mennonites, where the usual social rules don't apply and they can even <horror> use cellphones, electricity, and even the inter-webz. There might even be Amish reading this sordid little website even now. And best of all - what happens in Pinecrest, stays in Pinecrest.
Walking around Pinecraft is like entering an idyllic time warp. White bungalows and honeybell orange trees line streets named after Amish families: Kaufman, Schrock, Yoder. The local Laundromat keeps lines outside to hang clothes to dry. (You have to bring your own pins.).Many travelers I spoke to jokingly call it the "Amish Las Vegas," riffing off the clich'e that what happens in Pinecraft stays in Pinecraft. Cellphone and cameras, normally off-limits to Amish, occasionally make appearances, and almost everyone uses electricity in their rental homes. Three-wheeled bicycles, instead of horses and buggies, are ubiquitous.
"When you come down here, you can pitch religion a little bit and let loose," said Amanda Yoder, 19, from Missouri. "What I'm wearing right now, I wouldn't at home," she said, gesturing at sunglasses with sparkly rhinestones and bikini strings peeking out of a tight black tank top. On the outskirts of the village, she boarded public bus No. 11 with six other sunburned teenagers. They were bound for Siesta Key, a quartz-sand beach about eight miles away.
Remembering the Doolittle Raid
I was remiss yesterday in not pointing out that it was the 70th anniversary of the famous Doolittle Raid on Japan.
The Raiders, unaware of their mission, departed from the USS Hornet 965km east of Japan. A chance encounter with a Japanese fishing boat, which they destroyed, forced the Raiders to leave early, meaning they would not have enough fuel to make it to their planned landing in China. As a result, following the bombing, 15 of the planes crash-landed in rural China, while the 16th bomber made it to Russia. The Raiders were aided by Chinese peasants, thousands of whom were later killed by the Japanese for their support of the Americans, Glines said.
Of the 80 Raiders, three died during the landings and eight were captured by the Japanese. Three of those captured were executed, one died in captivity, and four remained prisoners of war and survived the war.
The attack, which did not do much damage to Japan's munitions factories, shifted momentum in the Pacific conflict.
"The Japanese were completely surprised," Glines said. "They did not think the United States had the range for that type of attack." Japan brought more troops home to protect the mainland, leaving it vulnerable in the Pacific. Rejuvenated US troops took advantage, defeating the Japanese at the Battle of Midway two months later, turning the war for good.
Amazingly 5 of the Raiders are still alive and 4 were able to attend the Annual Doolittle Raid reunion in Dayton, OH yesterday.
Pretty much everything you've ever seen online is just the surface part of the web. In fact there's an entire subterranean web network, the 'deep web', that lives hidden on the same networks:
Onion sites, so named because they end with ".onion", are hosted as Tor hidden services - a completely anonymous way to host websites. They're part of the deep Web - an invisible part of the Web that's not visible to search engines and normal users. It's full of websites for users obsessed with privacy and anonymity online.
Some of the seedy underbelly of the Web is located here, too, although many of the websites are probably scams, hoaxes, or just traps designed to catch people buying illegal services. There are good uses for .onion sites, though- for example, a political activist in a repressive country or a whistleblower could use a .onion site to upload and share sensitive data or communicate anonymously. While browsing the deep Web, be careful what you click. While much of the content is no doubt entirely made-up, there's some horrifying imagery you could see if you're not careful - but then, there's horrifying stuff on the normal Web, too.
As always surf the web (and the under-web) at your own risk.
The Boston Busing Crisis of the 70's
Here Neo-neocon shows how a single judge, W. Arthur Garrity Jr., managed to come up with a school integration plan so unworkable and ill thought out that it enraged both black and white parents and more or less destroyed the Boston public education system. I remember seeing Boston busing protests on the news as a kid - little did I know how truly fucked up the whole situation was.
But Garrity showed little interest. He gave the city only 11 weeks to prepare for the biggest social experiment in its history. Worse, six days after the court order, he unabashedly admitted he had not even read the Master Plan prior to ordering its implementation....During Garrity's tenure as de facto school superintendent, public-school enrollment dropped from 93,000 to 57,000 and the proportion of white students shrank from 65 percent of total enrollment to 28 percent.
Well the May catalog is out and the current models are looking pretty good. According to reviews they're 20% less stabby than last year and are now totally 110% guaranteed not be Russian spies.
News You Probably Can't Use: Kangaroos Have 3 Vaginas
Apparently marsupial plumbing is..complicated:
This set-up is shared by all marsupials - the group of mammals that raise their young in pouches. Koalas, wombats and Tasmanian devils all share the three-vagina structure. The side ones carry sperm to the two uteruses (and males marsupials often have two-pronged penises), while the middle vagina sends the joey down to the outside world.
Yahoo group. That is all.
And my Twitter spew.

Synthetic DNA Created, Evolves on Its Own
New research has brought us closer than ever to synthesizing entirely new forms of life. An international team of researchers has shown that artificial nucleic acids - called "XNAs" - can replicate and evolve, just like DNA and RNA.
The molecules that piece together to form the six XNAs are almost identical to those of DNA and RNA, with one exception: in XNA nucleotides, the deoxyribose and ribose sugar groups of DNA and RNA have been replaced. Some of these replacement molecules contain four carbons atoms instead of the standard five. Others cram in as many as seven carbons. Some types even contains a fluorine atom.
These substitutions make XNAs functionally and structurally analogous to DNA and RNA, but they also make them alien, unnatural, artificial -- and stronger than normal DNA.

From the paper in my old little PA town in red Lancaster County:
Molly Swan agreed that the story is seven months from now, not seven days. She said she likes President Obama for a second term, as she relaxed with a pint at a local pub Monday night.
"I feel ObamaÂ’s first term was a huge step forward for our country," she said. "He had a lot to clean up and we need to give him more time to make a difference."
"The economy is slowly rising," chimed MollyÂ’s sister Amy Enck. "I think things are 50 percent better than they were four years ago. He needs more time to make these big changes."
For Swan, ObamaÂ’s approach to health care is a major attraction, as the 22-year-old would be without coverage if not for "Obamacare." She is currently on her parentsÂ’ plan.

Kind of like the question "what is the best carry gun?" The answer is, the one that you find comfortable and will use. I really wanted to like the Small Of The Back (SOB) design, but I hates it, you have to twist your hand up to draw and it seems you are always going to sweep some part of your anatomy during your draw that you would probably not want holes in. I currently have a Galco SuperTuck, but it is going to go away because I'm not enamored of the single-clip over the pants waistband but otherwise not securely fastened to anything design. I'm thinking a Crossbreed Supertuck. or maybe something from Dragon Leatherworks, or something from the Evyl Robot. (FWIW, ER made Abby's leather lunchbox in the latest NCIS episode.)
Evening roonz and roonettez! Can't stay long, I have a play date scheduled for tomorrow morning early to make things go bang. I finally get to see if the new sandpapery grips are going to reduce my FTF/FTE issues with the Glock 36.

Yes.
I had a similar incident whilst driving late one night. I was in the right lane on I95, a good distance behind a little subcompact. Suddenly it occurred to me that I needed to hit the brakes and pull to the left, which I did. Simultaneously the car ahead of me blew a tire and went into a spin.
My heart was beating so fast I'm sure my daughter could hear it in the passenger seat.

Silver lining: if or when things get really bad, we'll at least be able to point at them and say "it could be worse". On the awful plus side, they're mostly young, tender, not all that good-looking, and defenseless. If it ever gets to a "long pork" disaster, they'll be easy to find and gentle on both the chompers and the conscience.

The Galco Tuck N Go (I mis-identified it earlier) has a single plastic clip that goes over the pants waistband and under the belt with a J hook that engages the bottom of the belt to keep it from pulling out when you draw. I don't like it because nothing but the pants waistband keeps it from sagging when the pistol is in it.

I had my brakes go out on me a few weeks ago. Stop light ahead and a few cars ahead of me. I hit my brakes and nothings happening slam the pedal all the way down and it finally starts to slow but not enough. Luckily there was no one in the right lane beside me so I cut over there. I'd have been so fucked otherwise.
Managed to make the half hour drive home with bad brakes requiring me to press the pedal down half way before it even starts to slow the entire drive home. The cause was the brake line to my front right tire getting a hole in it.

The problem with the under-the-arm carry, if you aren't wearing a suit jacket or similar cover garment, is it is hard to get to. The same grumpy bastard as before has a bellyband holster that he uses quite a bit, but you really have to rip the shirt up out of the way to clear the weapon for a draw - not a good quick-draw holster, but good concealement.

I hit my brakes and nothings happening slam the pedal all the way down and it finally starts to slow but not enough.
Last year I had power brakes and power steering go out on my full-sized van ... on a winding mountain road. Standing on the unresponsive brake pedal, and wrestling the dead steering wheel, I managed to manhandle the van to the side of the road and stop it at the edge of a precipice by using the emergency brake and slamming the van into park as it slowed down. (Turned out the fuel pump had died.)
It all turned out well. For me, that is. For my underpants, not so much.

PPP's LV poll for DailyKos tells the whole story- Voter ID breakdown 32R-31D-37I at the moment. Vote goes to Walker by 50%, and frankly thats all he actually needs thanks to lefty 3rd parties which will peel off more votes from the Ds.
That trendline holds, the electorate that shows up would be to the right of 2010's.
That is IF it holds.

Went to the local cobbler to have the zipper replaced in my boots and happened to ask about the belts he had. When I told him what I was looking for, he said he could make me one from the leather he makes tack from.
Took me in the back and showed me the different colors he had, I chose the black and said 1.5" wide please.
Three days later I had new brass YKK zippers in the sides of my boots and a brand new, custom hand made gunbelt, all for $45.

That's just sick. Why in hell would you ruin a parts car? Evidently they don't realize even a rusted beyond repair but complete car has a shit ton of usable stuff, and you can often pay nearly as much for one as for a resto vehicle.

Wichita had an F-3 that hit the far southeast part of the city, about a mile away from me. Spirit aerosystems, McConnell AFB, and Boeing had pretty good damage. For some weird reason, not one single death occurred. We had about 17 injuries, and of course a trailer park destroyed. Other than that, we made out. Pea-sized hail and heavy winds were the worst and of course the obligatory power outage for a couple of hours.

Okay, I hope the Doolittle raid is still part of this thread... anyway, who conceived (as opposed to planned) the Doolittle raid? Was it Jimmy Doolittle? If so, I submit that Doolittle may have been the most brilliant strategist of WWII.
The raid was a strategic master stroke. While Americans forces pounded their way across the Pacific for 4 years, it tied down Japanese forces orders of magnitude larger in guarding the home islands, by brilliantly taking advantage of inbred Japanese racism and xenophobia, ultimately saving hundreds of thousands of American lives.
The atomic bomb also saved hundreds of thousands of American lives, but it required the mobilization of thousands of the world's greatest scientists, and it took years and billions of dollars (and in the 40's a billion dollars meant something!) Doolittle did it years earlier, and for a ten-thousandth of the cost, when the only super-weapon was the American aviator. Fucking brilliant!

Change the strap routing, and it doubles as a chest holster. Can't say enough good about those, but of course they are totally unconcealable. Remember that in many states, if you hunt with a pistol, the holster must go outside your outermost garment, or you are concealing your hunting gun, an entirely different legal question from CCW. There are many chest-strap hunting holsters, with padding and flap snaps.
Either of these is a good solution to rough-country hiking (like hunting), riding a trail bike or 4-wheeler, driving off road, or working in the woods. The pistol is out of the way, easy to check, safely contained, pointed right, yet real handy. But stay out of Woolworth's.

I'm too lazy to read all the comments.
I will say this, I'm in a love hate relationship with my PhD program right now. They've gone fairly anti-secularist in the more recent timespan, something I think is good (not necessarily "Religious" as much as trying to counter the flow of perversive secularism.)
The cool thing about that is it's full of questioning assumptions, metaphysics the whole nine yards. "Why is your view that X is true ( Fetus's aren't human for example, etc.) allowable by my assertion that's it's Y (Life begins at conception) is not? You offer no emperical proof, I admit I have none, I'd argue it's in that lovely area called 'Faith.' I can't bring my faith to the table but you can bring your assertion that it's not true? Paradox!" Is merely the starting point.
I've cornered "father's of the field" with that logic, and gotten them to just sputter.
Then comes the upshot, saying such a thing gets you black balled. I pointed this out to my professor and I was basically told "well we need to change that by building better the next generation of guys.". So what? I just tow the company line until tenure then go nuts? For the time being I'm retreating in to an obscure area of "the field" to make a name for myself by being contrarian to radicals that don't even have the backing of the left. (When life hands you a living straw man beat it down until you have a career.) But what when that runs out?
*Specfic field redacted for my own safety.

Depends on how you are intending to carry. If you're talking about concealed carry, I'm "old school" and use a custom ankle holster for my Glock 36. In really hot weather, I carry a Berretta Tomcat in a pocket holster when I wearing shorts. I recommend against using a holster with a belt clip: the clip can slip over the belt when attempting to draw your weapon and the holster will still be stuck to the pistol. If you want to carry on the hip, use a holster with belt loops or slots.
>
>I can't comment on the rig you mentioned seeing on Hawaii 5-0 other than to say it's TV so it's probably bullshit. TV and movies will not present tactically sound procedure because it's not visually interesting: case in point, they always have the police have the pistol up near their face -- this is just to get the pistol in the same frame as the actor's face; it's actually a good way to shoot yourself. You actually carry at "low ready" at waist-level pointing at the floor or "high ready" at sternum-level pointed forward.

A man I respect once told me the definition of a dullard is somebody who opens the encyclopedia to find a single fact, closes it, puts it back on the shelf and walks away.
Many people have heard these phrases all their life without ever feeling the slightest curiosity as to what was actually meant.
These are the people who will just stare at you if you ask them, "What is the etymology of etymology?"

Posted by: cthulhu at April 20, 2012 12:36 AM
Well this is 1961 lespaul/SG. The neck joint on those are weak, and the glue joint came partially undone and started cracking the body in the cutaway on one side of the joint, like they like to do. I had to make some padded clamp cauls to keep the crack clamped tight so I can get the neck out without cracking it more than it is now. The thing sat for years with strings on it with the neck pulled forward under tension, so the tenon is actually warped a little, so its a long process to unwarp it. yeah its a pain.

Seriously, though, the design of LPs (and SG's) is a wonder of ergonomics, beauty, and tone.....except for that damned neck joint, which looks like a kludge on a bandaid over suck. There's like 57 pieces in there -- and where I understand glue joints might be actually stronger than wood....uhhh....ummmm....shouldn't there be some wood that actually goes all the way through?
Then, again, I'm not a luthier. I'd be more likely to try to shake a rattle over it with a white feather and bourbon.

Well for one, I only like the 22 fret models, with the flatter boards, and they aren't quite as flat as I like to start with, so any vintage model is out of the question, which cuts out a whole class of strats. The american standard, and the highway 1 are 22 fret, so I found a few of each used in great shape. The highway 1's have a satin semi crap finish that are just begging to be resprayed, so I grabbed a few of them in a sunburst color to respray in some vintage custom colors, but over the sunburst like fender did alot of the times. One is getting fiesta red, another is getting lake placid blue. Half are getting bridge humbuckers, the other half are staying traditional, and I grabbed a few standards to leave as is because they are nice as they are. Anyway, that was battle plan.

I think you should go to your State's website and pull down a few pointless depts. and join me. What say?

Gotta tell you, never had a glass of wine (unless you count the Cold duck at Christmass with my folks) till I met hubby, and I love the stuff.. Just don't drink it to often, and some of the cheaper stuff is pretty tasty, and a real nice buzz.

I'm of two minds.....there are some things -- like my grandfather's tool boxes, that he made out of transformer boxes with handbuilt wooden trays -- or the power tire-inflator, that I use in a utilitarian way....but they never fail to remind me.
And then there's things like his communion cup, which I keep nestled in a plastic box in a display case that is anchored to the wall. It's not a useful thing, really, and I hope to pass it on.

Actually that's always simply how I've heard it referred to, the manual labor thing (hence my mispelling.) In the back of my head I think there's memory of the military etymology of the phrase, but it didn't stick. I should likely just avoid turns of phrase in general I suppose.
I do however, suck generally at spelling and would be horribly lost without spell check. It gets progressively worse as I get more and more tired. Never quite figured out where my problem with phonetics and such came from, don't really care. If it's important I'll edit it until I'm blue in the face, if it's a late night comment on a blog no so much. I also have miserable handwriting, it has been suggested that these are connected.
Also, it's a L, not an I in the nick.
In anycase, I'm going to see if I can catch up on the sleep, might help my chances of getting work done (with less random error.)

I have to try that. I'm a coffee freak. I usually have a minimum of a half dozen coffees at any given time. I had this Godiva chocolate stuff not too long ago that was pretty good. That chocolate milk trick made me think of that coffee. Actually, I could probably stick some hersey's chocolate syrup in regular milk and toss that in the coffee.
Hey chemistry is fun. lol

So, I've got a bee that tries to play fetch!
We have two privets that flank our entry, and there's a black flying insect that's taken up station there. Funniest thing, though, when you pick up one of the liquidambar spiky-balls off the lawn and chuck it between the privets, he'll chase after it until it lies still. It's like he wants to play fetch but can't lift the spikyball.

Plan A: Pause, cock your head as though hearing something and then say, "Mother Gaia just spoke to me. Your concern is sending out too many negative vibes. She demands that you kill yourself in order to lessen her burden and despair. Go now, and sin against her no more."
Plan B: Say to him, "But, you have eaten meat, haven't you? If you know what I mean. Nudge, nudge, wink, wink and all that."

doesn't matter, they are all symptoms of his inferiority complex. Why worry about the symptoms, go straight to his disease and squash him like the bug that he is.

SF State is North Korea to Berkeley's China. One of my younger brothers graduated from SF State, and I tried to do some grad studies there... you would not believe the place.

1. I'm a college instructor. I never go to these educational conferences because I'm afraid I'll hurt one of the commie indoctrinators.
2. The Amish in Florida thing is a hoot. I had an Amish landlord--nicest guy you'd ever do business with. He bought the property as an investment for his Amish clan's retirement fund. But the property was very small potatoes compared to the biggest Amish investment he managed: A power company in Florida! I kid you not!
