Always Room For Improvement

It may be high tech military devices that get all the media attention but never forget that there is always room for improvement in even the most mundane of military equipment.

Muzzle breaks:

The new accessory is a muzzle brake. These devices tend to be about 10 cm (4 inches) long and weigh 110-140 gm (4-6 ounces). They screw onto the front of the barrel and keep the barrel more stable after each shot reducing recoil, as well as flash. ...The latest feature is to have threads in the small round holes in the muzzle brake, where the gas from the bullet propellant can disperse. The new EFFIN muzzle brakes allow you to screw plugs into some of these holes to compensate for the tendency of your rifle to jerk a bit to one side. This keeps you steadier for the next shot which, in combat, is often needed immediately.

Dust-proof magazines:

A lower tech, but equally useful item, is the dust-proof magazine. ...Commercial firms have come out with several generations of magazines that try to seal the magazine well to keep the talcum powder-like crud out of the rifle. One of the most effective of these is the Advanced Reliability Combat magazine that includes a soft gasket that creates a dust-proof seal when the magazine is inserted in an M-4, or similar weapon (like the SOCOM SCAR). ...Magazines of this type are also available with another simple, but life-saving, innovation: a strip of see-through plastic running the length of the magazine, showing how many bullets you have left.

A better way to carry a wounded soldier:

Some Israeli commandos came up with a simple method for carrying a wounded man out of difficult situations (inside buildings or over rough terrain). Basically it's a series of straps that allows one man to carry the casualty on his back, like a backpack. The carrier has both hands free, to handle a weapon or help in getting down stairs or over obstacles. The device is now sold (for $80) as the IPC (Injured Personnel Carrier). Another example of how necessity is the mother of invention.

Note that all of these cost less than $100.

Is "Marrying Up" Really the Conservative Female Ideal?

So S.E. Cupp defended Ann Romney and expressed a desire to emulate Ann's life herself:

As a thirtysomething, city-dwelling, hypereducated, independent-thinking woman, I suppose I should recoil at the idea of one day getting married, quitting my ultracompetitive job and staying home to raise my brood of germ-carrying moochers.

But as I sit in a cramped New York apartment, surrounded by bills, drowning in a sea of deadlines, the conventional life of a stay-at-home mother actually sounds pretty nice..

...But by marrying wealthy, Ann made a truly empowering decision that allowed her the freedom to do whatever she wanted. And she did it, by all accounts, without sacrificing the really important stuff, marrying someone she loved..

In fact, her excellent choice of a mate makes her uniquely qualified to talk about the most important economic issue that real women confront: How am I going to support myself and my future family?

But William Jacobson of Legal Insurrection thinks she's playing right into the hands of the Democrats:

Is marrying up the conservative female ideal?

Doesn't that play right into the hands of the class warfare-iers who claim (falsely) that a woman's choice to stay at home and raise children rather than work outside the home fundamentally is a choice only for the wealthy?

Eh. All things considered who wouldn't want a wealthy spouse? And just because this choice appeals to Cupp hardly defines it as the ideal for all conservative women.

10 Things You (Probably) Didn't Know About Mad Max

Among other factoids - Mel Gibson get the role thanks to a busted face from a bar fight and most of the crew were paid in beer:

Director George Miller bribed a lot of people to work on the film with "slabs" of beer. In Australia, a "slab" is a case of 24 cans. Slabs were used to pay ambulance drivers, a tractor driver, and it's safe to imagine some of the bikers as well. Sounds like a fair deal to me.

Predicting How Long Celebrity Marriages Will Last

Garth, a self-professed uber-geek, has crunched the numbers and discovered a better way to gauge the toxic effects of celebrity. Whereas the old equation measured fame by counting the millions of Google hits, the new equation uses a ratio of two other measures: the number of mentions in The Times divided by mentions in The National Enquirer.

"This is a major improvement in the equation," Garth says. "It turns out that overall fame doesn't matter as much as the flavor of the fame. It's tabloid fame that dooms you. Sure, Katie Holmes had about 160 Enquirer hits, but she had more than twice as many NYT hits. A high NYT/ENQ ratio also explains why Chelsea Clinton and Kate Middleton have better chances than the Kardashian sisters."

Garth's new analysis shows that it's the wife's fame that really matters. While the husband's NYT/ENQ ratio is mildly predictive, the effect is so much weaker than the wife's that it's not included in the new equation. Nor are some variables from the old equation, like the number of previous marriages and the age gap between husband and wife.

After he crunched the numbers, Garth's advice to Jessica Simpson and Ms. Spears is to avoid marriage anytime soon. And he doesn't hold out much long-term hope for a Kardashian sister married to a pro basketball luminary.

"I've calculated the chance of Khloe Kardashian and Lamar Odom celebrating their golden anniversary," he says, "Even when I extend it to 15 decimal places, the probability is still zero."

Keep in mind that "marrying up" does not just refer to income.  Almost *all* women want to marry a man who is richer, taller, smarter, stronger, or even funnier --or usually more than one of these.  Feminists are fighting biology and millennia of evolution.

Their grandparents and great-grandparents had come out of the mountains--part of that long string of scots-irish settlers. In fact, many of the words they used here were words they used. Only two--boomer and si-gogglin were new to me. It's strange since I am completely accent-less but I guess not that far in the eyes of history from "such talk".

93 White Hispanics:  Now they see 'em, now they don't!

Journalists have always listed Hispanics as a separate racial classification -- Whites, Hispanics, African-Americans, with no overlap.  After the George Zimmerman situation, I wondered if they would be ballsy enough to go back to their previous behavior.  They were.  And it didn't take long.

The anniversary of Jackie Robinson breaking the color line presented that opportunity.  The Journalists say that the color line was a barrier to all minorities:  African-Americans, Hispanics, Asians, etc.  That was not the case.

Cincinnati signed the first Hispanic players, Rafael Almeida and Armando Marsans, in 1911.  Many others followed.  The most prominent was Dolf Luque, winner of 194 games, whose entire career took place before Jackie Robinson ever played an inning of Major League baseball.  Players descended from the indigenous population of North and South America also played during this time period.  These players included Jim Thorpe, Chief Bender, and Indian Bob Johnson (yes, those were really their nicknames!).

So, who could play Major League baseball before 1947?  Everyone except Blacks/African-Americans.  White Hispanics? Yep.  Brown Hispanics?  Yep.  American Indians?  Yep.  Asians?  Almost certainly, although Japanese baseball was not as advanced as Latin baseball at this time; hence, no Asian players until recent times.

The question that probably is leaping to everyone's mind is, Why would the Journalists do this?  The crux of all the stories that appear in the media on the anniversary of Jackie Robinson breaking the color line is that there has been a significant decline in the number of African-American players (by which the Journalists mean Black players born in the U. S.), compared to 20-30 years ago, which there has been.  The implication left by the stories is that the people running Major League Baseball are unconcerned about this decline due to racism, or they are indifferent to the racism that exists in some of the team managements, etc.  But why would a bunch of racists add a lot of Black Hispanic players to their rosters?  And by "a lot" I mean that above 50% of the Hispanic players almost certainly would be considered of African descent for affirmative action purposes.  This is really ugly and can't be passed off as occurring due to a lack of intelligence on the part of the Journalists, even though many of them are as dumb as a post.  The George Zimmerman situation establishes -- definitively! -- that they know that there are White Hispanics, Brown Hispanics, and Black Hispanics.  There is no doubt about that anymore.  None.

This kind of behavior is the reason that I congratulate myself every day on my decision to stop subscribing to newspapers and magazines.  It's a moral imperative that these miserable rat effers be driven into bankruptcy.

110 75 On the dog thing, which will never not be hilarious, was there no one in the Obama campaign who a. remembered that this was in the book, b. read the book or c. realized that once this door was opened, well, they let the dogs out. (c'mon it was right there!)

Of course there was.  They just weren't used to being called on it... or used to criticizing their own.  They were probably tossing this around internally for weeks without anybody bringing up Obama's dog-eating problem.

Where I think this petty stuff actually matters is that the Obama campaign seems to be going for an us-versus-them strategy to marginalize Romney.  Anything they can do to paint him as a freak and out of touch with the average American helps that.  That's why Romney team needs to hit back against this as hard as possible.

Forgot to add that the trip to and from the race track used up about 15 gallons of diesel, some of which created a lot of black smoke.

I like to find Prius drivers with the driver's window down, which is pretty weird in OK in the summer time, but it happens.  If I time it just right, I can nail the throttle on the diesel and the smoke plume out the right side of my truck goes right in the window!  I'm getting a little tired of the game, so I now tend to reserve it only for those Prii with Obama stickers.  That qualifier has not significantly reduced the number of targets, though.

164 Pardon a drive-by commenting. Since I'd mentioned him last night... Ol' Shep's rallying was -- I might have guessed as often as I've seen it -- that burst of strength before the light goes out. I checked on him at about 5am, tried to make him comfortable, and by 7am he was gone. Wandered up on the farm and into our family in the autumn of 2000. Blind in one eye, arctic fur in a sweltering clime, and couldn't learn sic 'em from c'mere. But a sweetheart, got along with all the other dogs and cats and kids. Kept trying to bite car tires, though. Second dog we've lost. Biggest grave we've ever had to dig in our little pet cemetary. All our kids, a cousin, a friend, the Mrs, me, and the one cat who always comes to burials attended. So long, good guy. Good night folks. Long and surely interesting[/] week ahead.

174 @100, isn't "hispanic" the more recent term of classification? My father's birth certificate lists him as "white," and the man looks like a cigar store indian. When filling out government forms, there is a listing for "hispanic" and "not-white" hispanic, which I assume means blacks or Filipinos.

251 The Ewok fasted for forty days, and for forty days he fasted.

In the evening of the forty first day the Ewok saw a vision of an Israeli tank stuck in the mud and an Angel of the Lord spoke and said, "This is the tank from which the pancakes will come."

The Ewok trembled and spoke, "For whom are these pancakes, Messenger?"

The ground shook and the Angel of the Lord answered, "The pancakes are for thee and the woman who entereth thy home. Thou shalt share them and dab them with butter and real maple syrup."

I think we need to invent our own religion, Moronism. It all started
when our founder, Ace, discovered golden crates of Val-U-Rite... Shortly
thereafter, he began having visions of lost tribes of Amazons coming to
America, eager to reproduce with clueless morons.

He wrote it all down, in the Book of Morons...

By raising the cost of living, the left has made it much harder for middle class people to have one spouse at home with the children.

292 And it came to pass, in the midwinter of that year of elections, when the frost lay heavy upon the ground, and the hooters of the babes were no longer encased in mere thin cotton, that a hooded bluish apparition appeared before the Ewok.

"Tonight, young Ewok", spake the thing, "thou must travel to the land of thy enemies, the notorious Kennedies, for wondrous events shall there transpire."

And though it sounded more like another one of his Valu-Rite hallucinations than prophetic words from the Beyond, still the Ewok packed his pudding cups and sat upon the Greyhound, to make his way to the site of which the bearded Jedi had spoken.

And there, to his wond'ring eyes, the mighty Brahmin beast was slain, and a rhinoceros of steely mien stood upon its corpse, and the Ewok sang forth its praise, for the rhino had a couple of seriously hot chicks as daughters. Then, with an ecstatic shout, he proffered unto the dazzling Wormtongue of MSM, the perfidious Norah, a gift of unopened Jell-O.

Whereupon she maced him and called the cops, but at least he got a blog post out of it.

351 Ed Anger -- fighting can be good or bad, depending. My grandfather was fighting hard for the last two days of his life -- he was in the ICU and supposedly "not there", but he sounded like he was running up a hill with a swarm of bees behind him -- panting hard, staggering, pushing on to the limits of his being. It was heartbreaking to watch.

After two days of sometimes holding his hand, sometimes just being in the room, not knowing what to say, watching him, trying to take care of my grandma.......I told him that I loved him dearly but could see his pain, and that I would make sure grandma was ok -- and if he had to let it go, that was ok too. Half an hour later, he was gone.

You never want to give up on anyone, and it's an important source of comfort and support. But there's a difference between fighting for yourself and fighting for someone else. I hope your dad is a great fighter for himself; and I hope he never feels that he disappointed anyone by not fighting for them.

I really don't know enough about you or your dad to even put in a relevant 2 cents, and I hope nothing I say pains you or your loved ones......it's just that I've sat in that hospital room, and these things were happening to me at the time, and the outcome wasn't what I'd hoped for.

The BH is dieting -- she went with a very aggressive, medically supervised program using http://www.hmrprogram.com/ -- same as ChemJeff used. She's lost 60 pounds, ChemJeff is at 40+. It seems horrible, but effective.

When losing large amounts of weight, scary things can happen -- current "maintenance" levels of medication can become toxic, byproducts from fat breakdown can cause gallstones, previously solid body parameters (e.g. blood pressure) can develop "quirks"......and so on. If you start to get serious about the program, talk medicine with someone you can trust.....and if it's not your current physician, change.

HMR doesn't require a kitchen scale (we had one before -- the second time you have a recipe instruction that says "X packed cups of Y ingredient, sifted" is two too many) -- they tend to use volume measures.

No matter where you dive into the rabbit hole of diet recommendations, somehow you always end up popping your head out near "paleo". I'd advise starting with that and seeing where it gets you. Then, again, I'm doing the "nouvelle cuisine with generous of beer and wine" diet and remain decidedly chunky.

362 I think the first time I heard the name "Gaia" used much (outside of Greek Mythology class that is) was in context of the "Gaia Hypotheses." The idea was that the Earth could be seen as one gigantic organism, almost, in the sense of it being a single integrated system with self-regulating tendencies. IIRC the outcry against that was it painted too rosy a picture of Earth's ability to recoup from mankind's shenanigans, etc. So how did we get from that self-healing Gaia to today's vision of Gaia, a hypernervous mother who collapses on the couch and yells at the kids playing as kids do "What are you trying to do, kill me?"

One of the things about college is that you're supposed to learn stuff......but not necessarily only things that are in the course catalog.

Living in the dorms, eating the same slop every day, I discovered that I'd gain about a pound every 10 days if I had 3 bowls of cereal each morning.....and lose about a pound every 15 days if I had 2. Since I felt so little reward from eating one over the other, it was easy to arbitrarily change behavior.....which, inevitably, changed weight. Dieting is about changing the autopilot, and letting time take care of the rest.

After the lefties were able to basically rid the world of aerosol cans (a sure sign of modern civilization, at the time) they became particularly emboldened in the idea that they could easily do great damage to the advanced cultures, at which point these lefty twerps raised themselves in power to that of gods and, consequently, Earth's status plummeted to that of an infant battling ebola - the human scourge.

BTW, no one ever talks about the "o-zone hole" much anymore.  Getting rid of aerosol cans seems to have had no effect, but who cares..  It was power demonstrated.

To give you a little peek behind the HMR curtain -- we changed dishwashing detergents, and still have to rewash dishes. Whatever engineered-protein binder they use shrugs off standard consumer products, and one of their things "develops" with heat so that something you've scrubbed and rinsed clean can have dark clouds on it after going through a run. If it's doing this when you're trying to clean it up, what gronk is it leaving on your pipes while you try to digest it?

Still.......works.

I even called 'em up -- "hey, guys, what does it take to dissolve this stuff? A cup of gasoline in each load? Enzymes? Industrial solvents?"

They were very nice about it, took down info and got back to me with something inconclusive. Didn't have any suggestions, noted that it was secondary to their weight-loss mission (DUH!), but said they'd forward it on to R&D to see if it could be included in their development strategies going forward. It was a professional, believable, reasonable response. Leaves their product in the "horrible, but effective" bin, though.

It does stick to your ribs; it doesn't pass nutrients into your bloodstream to keep fat cells well-provisioned. And, no matter the "flavor" or what it looks like, it's all supposed to be as nutritionally balanced as Purina People Chow would be -- which leads one to suppose that it's highly engineered.

I was listening to NPR on a story about human guinea pigs, and how it's a serious supplement to some people's income, and there was this story about this guy who tested a paleo diet. He says, "it's weird -- you end up having to eat all the time" and ends up losing weight through the study. At the end, one of the researchers goes: "we almost didn't take you, you were borderline diabetic." When he ended the study, his stats were showing significant improvements in health.

On celebrity marriages I wonder if one sat down and added up the number of celeb marriages and divorces and compared them to the general population if they would be that much different.

I haven't looked at it in a while but overall marriages used to have a 50% failure rate on the first time. We see the star divoces stamped all over the news so we are more aware of them, but are they really more frequent?

499 Bonfires?
The Federal Government has banned all outside fires and burning in the state of Georgia.
The E.P.A. has decided that any fires set outside, yes your Bar-B-Que grill and campfire hotdogs and marshmallows are illegal.
Don't even think about the chimanea or the bug lamps, nope illegal.
The burning ban runs from May 1st till September 1st 2012
This is not because of drought, high winds or forest fires, nope this is about clean air. Your fire apparently kills the Ozone layer and makes Mother Nature cry.
So to save the Ozone for the children of the future there will be no fires in Georgia this summer.
No Do Not Even Strike a Match!
