So What's Your College Major Actually Worth?
Here's a nice chart from the Chronicle of Higher Education that takes census data and shows the median income for college graduates according to their major. And I'm guessing that a lot of colleges would prefer that incoming students not see it.
As you might expect, some of the tastiest salaries come from the toughest subjects. Petroleum engineering majors earn $120,000. Brown jobs really do rule. Ecology majors on the other hand get a little more than one third of that: $44,000. And remember: that isn't a starting salary; it's the median income for all the people in the field up to age 65. Stuffing envelopes for Greenpeace does not often lead to great things.
Yes this is median lifetime earnings. So if you're a college student and your major is to the right of say biology, well you really have no business borrowing money for college. It's a bad investment.
And this article leads Don Surber to declare that underemployment is good for college graduates:
What a life lesson these 20-somethings are learning. The law of supply and demand trumps a sheepskin. Always has. Always will. I am 58 years old and no one has ever asked what my GPA is. People come to this blog and they don't know whether I have a PhD or an eighth-grade education. They judge me on what I have to say and how I say it.Underemployment rocks because it knocks out that sense of entitlement. People also learn what real work is.

MP3 or Lossless: See If You Can Hear the Difference
You can run this test yourself in your favorite music program, but Windows favorite foobar2000 actually has an ABX plugin that makes the process easy. Check out the video at the top of this post to see how the plugin works, and try it out for yourself in foobar2000.The general consensus is that, while a low-quality MP3 (128kbps) might be discernible from a lossless file (~1,411kbps) file, higher quality MP3s (320kbps) rarely-if ever-are. Of course, this can differ depending on the type of music (classical music is often easier to discern), how familiar you are with the music, and how nice your audio equipment is.

The Myth of the Benign Nature of Herbal Remedies
We have beliefs but other people have superstitions. Furthermore, there seems to be a law of the conservation of superstition: if it does not attach to one thing, it will attach to another. Man does not live by rationality alone. One superstition among their middle-class, educated, and worried-well patients that most irritates doctors is that "natural" preparations, particularly herbal ones, are necessarily benign. People persist in believing this despite the fact that men (and women) have been poisoning one anther to death with herbal extracts since the dawn of recorded history, and most gardens have enough poisonous plants in them to decimate a countryside. No; if you did a word-association test with "herbal remedy," the chances are that words such as "gentle," "healing," "safe," and "non-toxic" would emerge.
Note that until recently nearly all poisons used in murders were also herbal 'remedies'. And read the rest to find out which herbal extract actually causes cancer.

Why I'm Depressed:
Over five thousand years ago, Moses said to the children of Israel , “Pick up your shovels, mount your asses and camels, and I will lead you to the Promised Land.”
Nearly 75 years ago, (when Welfare was introduced) Roosevelt said, “Lay down your shovels, sit on your asses, and light up a Camel, this is the Promised Land.”
Today, Obama has stolen your shovel, taxed your asses, raised the price of Camels and mortgaged the Promised Land!
I was so depressed last night thinking about Health Care Plans, the economy, the wars, lost jobs, savings, Social Security, retirement funds, etc . . . I called a Suicide Hotline. I had to press 1 for English. I was then connected to a call center in Pakistan . I told them I was suicidal. They got excited and asked if I could drive a truck.

In the real world, that entire civilization would look like Cuba, and the Ferengi would be running everything because they're the only ones who have *jobs*.

On Deep Space Nine, the holosuites were always busy, you had to have it scheduled and several times there were problems because they needed to kick someone out of the holosuites. And they had a much safer track record than the Starship Holodecks. Only the Julian Bashir - Secret Agent episode was anyone actually in danger.

Got ESPN on in the background. Played baseball in HS but have never been a fan of the MLB games. But watching some highlights, I'm amazed at the way baseball (the game) has remained almost the same as originally laid out.
90 foot bases, 60 foot pitching distance, etc. As the bats and balls improved and the speed of the runners got better, the fielding and throwing techniques have improved. A two-hopper to the shortstop still results in a close play at first. The fly balls stay in the air longer, but the outfielders' arms are better so the tag and go plays at home are close. Pretty cool.

TNG had a recurring character who was addicted to the holodeck and appeared in several episodes including ones in Voyager. And they did mention having to schedule for sessions. Still crap, mind you; it turning into Better Than Life™ from Red Dwarf would be the more likely outcome.

Listen to SoS.
I have never been stupid with a firearm because I believe these rules in my soul.
Never, ever, point a gun at anything you do not mean to kill - even if it's a really obnoxious stain on the wall (because dry firing can be embarrassing if you were dumb enough to have forgotten that all guns are loaded until you, personally, have verified that said weapon is not).
Even if you are absolutely certain (in the abstract, because you took the magazine out this morning before you put the gun and magazine in the safe) the gun is not loaded, treat is as if it is. That way, you never have an unpleasant surprise.

37Physical sciences seems quite compressed...how many of those are high school teachers?
That's because a BS in the physical sciences ain't shit, and a master's isn't much better. To get anywhere in the (real) sciences requires a PhD, which practicing scientists would generally consider a learner's permit. (The lab lore of fuckups by newly minted PhD scientists would make a many volume set.)

Make sure your finger isn't on the trigger when you pull the slide back. This is a common mistake. People with their left hand try to grip the gun and pull the slide back with their right hand. They sometimes don't even realize they're holding the trigger down with their left hand.

Hey, fellow 'rons. There's been some efforts to promote gun safety on the blog, and I think we all appreciate that. Being who I am, I have to set the record straight, since the basic rules have not been put down correctly here on multiple occasions, so here's my public safety announcement, courtesy of Jefff Cooper (paraphrased somewhat):
1. Every gun is loaded always.
2. Never point a gun at anything you don't intend to destroy.
3. Keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to fire.
4. Know your target, and what is beyond it. You are responsible for every bullet that leaves your gun.
Be safe, and have fun turning money into noise!

Anyone who spends his life trying to impress 20-year-olds with his intellect is a fucking loser.
Mixed review on this one. Most professors are probably smarter than their students, since they presumably mastered the material that two-thirds of the students will struggle with to varying extents.
OTOH, fully agree with the second proposition. If, after untold years of study, you don't know more about the subject than a late adolescent who's never heard of it before, it's a pretty sorry lookout. A corollary: as a lecturer, you're the least important person in the lecture theater. It's not about you.

Posted by: Softball Pitchers at April 24, 2012 11:29 PM (OWjjx)
Duh. One of the things that makes softball pitching effective is the rising trajectory. A pitcher's mound would hurt a softball pitcher's performance, by requiring her either to throw a slower or a flatter pitch to throw a strike.

Yeah but being a doctor isn't necessarily profitable anymore.
Private practices go under fairly often and that will only increase with the Obamacare rules and regulations.

Academics have chosen a field in which their intellectual discourse occurs with rank amateurs.
Actually, that's not true at all. Intellectual discourse occurs with other researchers who are also at the frontiers of science. Having to teach - especially undergraduates - is, like administration, a relatively mundane aspect of the job, much like doing the laundry or mowing the lawn. The twentieth time one has taught carbonium ion rearrangements, or ligand field theory, or the Boltzmann distribution, is just not that edifying. Out of professionalism, one feigns enthusiasm, but imagine teaching long division for twenty years. And then having some clown assert that that's the source of one's ego gratification.

Frack, I have no clue! Even I, and I'm here to tell you that "practical" just doesn't enter into my vocabulary, understood that Creative Writing was an *AVOCATION*, not a profession, and a degree in CW was akin to a suicide note in terms of one's resume.
Of course, then I went off and majored in Soviet Studies, and then didn't bother to get a degree...I'm not quite sure when I ended up gainfully employed. Or how.

Markowitz took the concept of a weeder course very seriously. I understood the material but still had to kill myself for a grade. My roommate was a senior Chemistry major and he had a tough time with the problem sets.
of course 30 years later I can help my brat with her chemistry homework without any struggle. So, I guess Markowitz did a good job after all.
One of the problems was the text: Mahan. Awful book.

Specialist doctors make a lot of money. The rest probably make above per capita income, but it's probably not high enough to justify 7 years of schooling/residency and all the costs associated with it.
I realize they're getting hit. I also realize it's getting worse. For right now, though, the average general practitioner makes in the mid-100s and specialists regularly make 250-350 (varying widely).
Yeah, it's a hard job to get there. It can be a hell of a psychological toll and for some specialties the hours suck. Not factoring in those salaries, though, skews these numbers.
With me (not a doctor, but I got another graduate degree), if I stopped after undergrad, I'd basically have the qualifications of a secretary, but I knew all along I planned to go to grad school, so I didn't focus on vocational skills in undergrad. A number of people are in the same position.

Pace (that's Latin for: "peace").
OK, fair enough. (I had four years of Latin too!)
But seriously, scientists don't become professors to lord it over undergraduates (or even graduate students). That's like saying you bought a house in suburbia just so you could mow the lawn. The attraction is to gain access to the grad students and facilities to do research. Teaching, like administration, is just part of the package.

I never actually read it, but the funny thing is that almost any given textbook speaks to some people, but not others, so if you think the textbook sucks, find another one that speaks to you and work from that.
I learned that lesson later in my career than I would have liked, but at one juncture I went from hating thermodynamics to loving it simply from recognizing that principle.

Interesting, but it jibes with my experience. Traditionally the private schools, especially in the Ivy League, think that their courses are the more rigorous. I didn't that was true, but ... kept that to myself, for obvious reasons.
The difference may be that students (and faculty) in public universities know that they'll have to perform to get ahead. They won't be able to trade on aura and connections.

I recall a time I persuaded my boss to let me use 40 hours of company time to write a computer program that automated experimental design calcs. Since I woefully underestimated how long the programming would take (a common problem), I actually devoted 120 hours to the project. the extra 80 hours were gratis from me, nights and weekends.
All in an effort to be lazy.

The weeder aspect is one of the big problems all chem departments face, and it makes teaching lower division courses something of an ordeal. Students often figure that the only thing standing between them and their dream is ... you. When in fact you're just the poor slob tasked with teaching the course, and you don't have a dog in this fight.

Ok, three simple rules. Never point it at anything you don't want to kill. Second, it's always loaded. Even if you are absolutely certain it's not loaded, you still treat it as if it were loaded. Third and final rule, always obey the first two rules.
Trust me, I am very afraid of guns. I always treat them as if they are about to GO NUCLEAR, and don't even point them at the cat in fun. The gun and the ammo are in the furthest corners of the house. No way am I going to do anything unless I am trained.

Get a recent translation, or one with a lot of philological notes, and some of the sparkle comes through. They weren't meant to be the dry-as-a-popcorn fart scareaways presented in sophomore courses (at my school, there was no 101. They knew better than to let freshmen get into philosophy).
That sort of answers "what job would you expect to get with a Creative Writing degree?" Many will not remember -- because it predates the MBA, back in the days when English or History would get you in the corporate door as a management trainee -- but in the 60's and 70's, there was booming demand for feature writers. Magazines were the biggest startup industry, and every newspaper expanded its non-news coverage, with book and movie reviews, lifestyle columns, and general interest articles. There was a paper shortage! Very "middlebrow," and those pieces were not written by journalism majors.
Sure, every Workshop writer wanted to do the Great American Novel (I was poet once, myself), but there were lots of ways to pay the bills. And while you're laughing at that, let me point out that my local blacksmith retired in the mid-60's, when the Interstate eminently domained his shop, not from lack of business. Ah children, it was a different world 'way back then. Engineering school was five years!

Yup. In my old age, I've learned not to get into it, but I once had some friends in the Bay Area hold forth at length on the urgent necessity of a low fat diet (when that was the fad du jour), then suggest we go out for pizza. Over dinner, pointing at the greasy spots from the pizza, I gently revisited the low fat diet issue. They assured me that pizza was low fat.
Oh.

Quite a bit of medicine is essentially controlled doses of poison. Which shouldn't be surprising -- you're asking for a substance to make your body do something different than what it's doing "naturally" on its own. You need to slow your heartbeat, thin your blood, interrupt the pain signals? You're asking for things that MUST eff you up given enough of a dose.

The worst part is the Kelly Bundy effect, when someone says something totally idiotic, and does so in a condescending way, when he doesn't know shit about the subject. Kinda like someone proposing traveling to the sun, and answering objections by saying he'll travel at night. That sort of thing.

Backyard at a Hollywood party, the liberal crap-trap was getting too annoying so my husband changed the subject by drawing attention to the beautiful night sky. Somebody else wondered, was that (pointing to bright spot) a star or a planet?
Husband was getting into his stride of explaining how you can tell that by whether the light was steady or "twinkling" due to...then one of the lefty pontificaters broke in to say it couldn't be a planet, because planets were just big rocks.
Letting the subject of alternate planetary compositions go for the moment, Hubby replied that rocks might not shine of themselves but could reflect light just fine, thank you.
Lefty says -- well, maybe, if they were close to a star.
Hubby said yes, and that star is the SUN.

"You're a good guesser, Thrasymachus" is one of the boffo Plato jokes that F.Cornford overlooked. I can well imagine The (actual) Symposium, with personages arrayed on couches of myrtle and yew, holding forth with just such suppositions. Dude, that would really rock in Attic. "And how else, Glaucon, would we provide for a city...of pigs?
Ever tell you about the blind date a singing pal set me up with back in the day? "Comatus, you're gonna love this chick. She's a Philosophy major, just like you!"
She majored in Womyn's Philosophy, at the Univ of Meeshegan. Actually studied under Mackinnon, where she had learned that since Aristotle once [physically] described woman as an "imperfect" or "unfinished" man, then the rest of his writing could be safely discounted. I told her that womyn must be pretty special, if they had a special philosophy just for them. It was a memorable evening. And then it snowed on the way home. Snowed and snowed.

Is that the one with the heel lower than the toes?
Ahhh yes, the 70's "Earth Shoe". invented by Danish yoga instructor, Anne Kalso ... female ...
IIRC she noticed, looking at footprints at the beach, that the heel part of a foot print was deeper than the ball part, ergo, proper shoes should have the heel lower than the ball of the foot ... this lead to all kinds of tendon problems for long-tem wearers, effectively killing the design after a few years ... although they're still available.

$1's are the perfect counterfeit candidate. You can print them on ordinary notebook paper and they won't get any scrutiny.
Everyone is looking for bogus $100's, $50's, and even $20's these days...nobody is looking for $1's. $5's might work OK too.
I have a friend who got a counterfeit $10 in change at some store years ago. FL was flooded with bogus $100's and $50's at the time, but nobody was looking for $10's and some enterprising counterfeiter was just quietly passing them for his daily pocket money.
I think the key to successful counterfeiting is to not be too greedy. If I were into counterfeiting rare coins, I wouldn't go for high dollar shit like an 09' "S" penny, I've read that about 90% of the claimed 09' S's in circulation are counterfeits. I'd go for something more modest in the $10 range that won't get any close inspection.

Speaking as a Fine Arts BA (concentration in commercial art), I can attest there's few better training grounds of bullshittery. Project crits in front of the entire class teaches you how to come up with arguments on the fly on how the failures in concept or craftsmanship being noted were actually carefully considered artitstic "choices".

They are a good car with a bad rap Cooth.. the leftards using them for billboards did it for me. My dad and sister both have and love them but would never put stickers on them. The 4x feature is useful around here.

My father was a watch repairman and had a jar of some proprietary cyanide solution in his office. He joked about it being the "jeweller's cocktail."

Dealers routinely do an abrasion/scuff/reaction test, so you gotta leave enough real gold that someone can do significant testing and still find real gold.

Silver and Gold cyanide would work great for touching up worn gold and silver plated stuff. There's a method called "brush plating" that uses the cyanide solution (which is conductive) and a felt brush end with an electrode in the middle. All you need is the metallic cyanide solutions, the plating brush and a few batteries to do touch up work on stuff. No elaborate tanks, rectifiers, etc.

Probably had too many "real" ones call them on their questionable repair procedures.. was cheaper in the long run to only sell to dolts who'll pay no questions asked.
The local dealer charged my Dad (82) for new subaru parts brake parts and put on 1/3 cheaper ones.. My bro in law check them when he got home and tore them a new a hole.
