Operation Eagle Claw: April 24th, 1980

Commenter Ryan reminded me that yesterday was the 32nd anniversary of the failed Iranian hostage rescue. Just one of the many reason I keep a torch of hate in my heart for Jimmy Carter and the Iranians.

Under the cover of darkness, eight navy helicopters were to fly from the U.S.S. Nimitz, based in the Arabian Sea, to "Desert One," a secret staging area in central Iran picked by the CIA, where they were to meet up with U.S. Delta Forces aboard three C-130 transport planes flying in from Oman. Another three C-130 transport planes carrying 18,000 gallons of fuel for the helicopters were also supposed to land at Desert One. The eight Navy helicopters would then refuel and fly the Delta Forces to "Desert Two," another spot about 50 miles south of Teheran, where they would conceal the helicopters and hide out during the day.
Eagle Claw only got as far as Desert One when disaster struck. On the night of April 24, 1980, a dust storm (haboob) forced one of the eight Navy helicopters to turn back, and another crash-landed after being disabled. The other six helicopters landed at Desert One, but another was lost to hydraulic problems. With just five helicopters operational, the commander on the scene decided to abort the mission - but that's when the real trouble started.

As the U.S. aircraft prepared to evacuate, one of the helicopters crashed into a C-130 carrying fuel and troops, destroying both aircraft and killing eight U.S. personnel. In the ensuing panic, all the other helicopters were abandoned - but not destroyed - so the Iranians actually came out ahead by several helicopters (some of which are still in service in the Iranian Navy).

Despite the mission's failure plans were made for another rescue mission: "Planning for a second rescue mission attempt was authorized under the name Project Honey Badger shortly after the first failed."

And note that the State Department is still preventing the American hostages from suing the Iranian government based on an agreement that was never ratified and ended when the Carter Administration did.

How a Reddit User's Post Turned Into A Hollywood Script

But perhaps the coolest reddit phenomenon involves James Erwin, a 37-year-old former software manual writer from Des Moines, Iowa. For him, reddit became a ticket to Los Angeles - not for vacation, but to start his new career as a Hollywood screenwriter.

While browsing reddit last August, Erwin, who majored in history, posted an enthralling response to one user's query: "Could I destroy the entire Roman Empire during the reign of Augustus if I traveled back in time with a modern U.S. Marine Infantry Battalion or MEU?"

Erwin's response: Five paragraphs that read like a war novel. And people wanted more.

Modern Food Fascism

Is there a polite way to tell them that we are happy to include them, however we will not be custom ordering meals to suit paleothic metabolisms and if they insist on maintaining their gluten/lactose/sugar/casein/fat-free diets, we would be happy to see them AFTER lunch for toasts and speeches. I don't want to be rude, but I've had enough family dinners ruined by their food proselyting that I have no interest to give them a forum at what should be a joyous time.

It's a free country so you can eat whatever you want - but when did people start expecting society and family to cater to every dietary preference/demand.

5 Creepy Parenting Fads

#5. Declaring Bratty Kids to Be Magical Superhumans ("Indigo Children" )

Raising a difficult child can be hell -- it's exhausting to deal with a kid who is uncooperative, endlessly demanding and spoiled. You have to try to get them ready to deal with school and the adult world beyond, all while helping them recognize their own potential as the next X-Men-style evolutionary leap forward for mankind.

Did the last part of that sentence confuse you? It certainly didn't if you're the proud parent of an "Indigo Child." According to the growing Indigo Child movement, your little bratty, self-centered dick is actually a magical new life-form

14 Re the food Nazis. Man and I attended a class in Piedmont regional (Italian) cooking this week. (Don't judge me.) Piedmont is known for the use of truffles, butter, soft cheeses, etc. Very rich food. One of the dishes was an appetizer/dip that is basically just anchovies and garlic sweated down into a paste with olive oil and butter. The instructor was going on and on about how cooking with the salty little fish was very trendy in NYC right now. All I could think of is how this must be some sort of loophole in Nanny B's war on salt. If I saw that man on the street, I'd kick him in the balls.

36 I've never cooked with anchovies but I've heard they essentially dissolve at the right heat. Huh. ---- Yep. They are delicious. They add a richness to tomato-based sauces that is amazing. Not fishy. Take a tin of anchovies (drain oil first and soak the fillets in milk for a few minutes to mellow them), sautee them with oil, garlic, and slivered onion until the onion is soft and the anchovies have disintegrated. Then ladle on some of your favorite red sauce. Cook for a few minutes. Then stir in heavy cream. Serve over vermicelli. Delicious!

I decided it's a fine family show.  If you got young daughters and you're watching TV with them and that's what's on, hey, it could be worse.  It's simple flash animation, simple stories, and the characters are vaguely endearing.  It's not going to have you pulling your eyeballs out.

But the bronies all must die.  This I am certain about.

88 Okay, I'm kind of tired and in pain and annoyed, so I can only spare y'all one spittle-flecked rant. Is there a polite way to tell them that we are happy to include them, however we will not be custom ordering meals to suit paleothic metabolisms and if they insist on maintaining their gluten/lactose/sugar/casein/fat-free diets, I know this dingus is trying to, obliquely, limit what they're talking about to "voluntary" diets, and not "serious conditions," but they talk about physical symptoms of food intolerances and allergies as if they were trivial. THAT CAN KILL YOU, YOU FRACKING WHORE! I do *not* impose myself on others. I do not go to restaurants anymore because they are incapable of hygeine. I don't insist people make special food for me, I take care of myself. And yet I *still* get annoyed comments about how I'm picky or it's some kind of fad, and now some diseased cockweasel wants to call it "fascism" because I won't eat his decaying tripe? Fucking communist. I have celiac disease. It's genetic, I didn't "catch" it. I don't have a choice, things other people eat every day make me ill, I can bleed internally, and since I didn't find out about this until I was an adult (because doctors are IGNORANT APES), there is still a decent chance I will die painfully of intestinal cancer over the next 15-20 years, maybe longer because of the results of the long-term damage. I didn't know about this until I was 35, I just knew that some food made me sick. So I tried to avoid those foods, which made me "picky" and constantly harassed about it by ignorant people who thought they knew everything. We have a long-running, established pattern of "food fascism" in most human cultures, and far from being a critic of that, Michael Ruhlman and his reader "Heather" are *exemplars* of that fascism - "take what you're given and like it, and shut up about it. But listen to me complain incessantly about people who don't do what I want." How about I don't take what you serve, and *you* shut the fuck up about it? Again, not "picky." INTERNAL FUCKING BLEEDING. And it's one of the most under-diagnosed conditions around, because doctors *still* treat it like it's rarer than it is.

One of the reasons Eagle Claw failed is because that nitwit Carter personally pared down the number of participating aircraft. Pared it down below the margin of error. I think the original plan called for going in with in excess of a dozen birds. Absolute minimum to accomplish the mission was 6.

Since fuckhead cut the number down to 8, supposedly to not seem to be an aggressive act, normal mission snafu's/attrition like maintenance problems and dust storms forced the commander on the ground to abort the mission after the collision.

Fuckstick Carter, amateur miltary strategist that he was forgot Rule #1. Your job as CinC is to give green light/red light authorization. And that's all. Let the professionals work out the details once you've given them the green light.

But fucking Carter was on a submarine so I guess he figured he knew better. Worthless POS Nobel Peace Prize winner.

135 124 How common is celiac? Posted by: steevy at April 25, 2012 10:46 PM (7W3wI) It's still a guess, they used to think it was less than .1%, now they figure at least 1.0-1.3%, and as they're finding out now, it's not only more than one genetic condition, but some of them are "asymptomatic," i.e. you only find out during the autopsy for death by intestinal cancer, if ever. Something like 3-4% of those have been diagnosed properly. A larger number have guessed correctly. It's also a condition *surrounded* by urban legends and just bad terminology or information, so a lot of self-help is done poorly (and so is a lot of medical help).

142 Celiac is getting that same mixed-blessing that autism has gotten over the last ten years. Increased awareness means more people are getting diagnosed, they have more options available to them---but it also means that a lot of trendy nimrods are jumping on the bandwagon, and people act as though the people who really do have celiac/gluten intolerance are all trendy nimrods. The diagnosis process itself sounds hellish, especially for kids. I can't imagine wanting to subject myself/my kid to a colon biopsy to determine whether it was celiac or "just" gluten intolerance, when they both have the same treatment.

BTW, the idea that one battalion of modern marines could overthrow the entire Roman Empire was discussed on this blog before... And is nuts. The Romans weren't stupid nor primitive - 300 Conquistadores overthrew the Aztecs, but the Romans were politically far too sophisticated to allow the seizure of one emperor or Rome itself destroy their state. They had a standing military of something like 450,000 soldiers. They had the equivalent of special forces. They would figure out quickly that their enemy was phenomenally armed but ill supplied, and play a waiting and attrition game against them. Then, they would simply overwhelm the marines with sheer numbers. And if they captured some weapons, like rifles, it would not take them long to produce their own.

But last night they broke into a program about the Battle of the Coral Sea to present his dissenting opinion. And they run these shorts for a year or so, and I shall continue to be tormented.

169 And if they captured some weapons, like rifles, it would not take them long to produce their own. Posted by: CoolCzech at April 25, 2012 11:03 PM (niZvt) I'd argue that part. They would have to standardize measurement and machining first. A very clever Roman could figure out that was necessary, but it would still take a long time to implement. Oddly, capturing 3rd-world weaponry (AKs, Chinese knockoffs) would allow faster reproduction, but they'd still have to master tool-grade materials first. I just think it would be nice if someone would sit down and imagine what actual *people* would do in these situations, rather than starting with an ending in mind and then manipulating the plot to suit that. It's all so contrived.

Yes. Using fishy stuff as a below-the-radar seasoning has deep roots. The ancient Romans, and the modern Chinese (shrimp paste), vietnamese (fish sauce), and Thais (fish sauce) know this well. Smell a jar/bottle of the stuff, and you wonder what died. Use it in judicious quantities, and you get this magical savory effect that makes you want to take another bite.

182 175 A marine MEU will have success on a local level, but doesn't have the numbers or firepower to hold onto significant amounts of territory. The real advantage will be if they have someone with access to information on making gunpowder and some knowledge of gunsmithing. Posted by: Alex at April 25, 2012 11:05 PM (jdZlf) Fuel would be easy, spare parts would not. They should have an armorer and a workshop capable of doing almost everything except raw barrels, and of making the tools needed to make raw barrels. They would have to capture territory to establish a supply chain. Copper, lead, and brass are not a problem. If they were serious and didn't give up. And they could collect and re-use brass (for several iterations anyway). Modern gunpowder may actually be beyond their ken. They could switch to black powder. They are a bit of a "glass cannon," if an extraordinary one. They could turn any battle in history or rout or even destroy any army ever gathered, but the original complaint is correct, they lack endurance without modern support.

USPS will use this money to "buy out" top earners near retirement who require a bit of a nudge to hit the door. They'd have to figure out advanced metallurgy, stamping, precision machining, gunpowder chemistry, etc., all the things that make an industrial base, just from some samples.

Forget modern weapons.  Focus on rifled muskets and brass cannon. It's still enough to dominate any army in the region, and will be easier to establish an industrial base to support.  Also, establishing electricity generation on a local level would be a medium range goal.  Not just for military use, but because it will win over locals and impress other nations.

210 Commenter Kratos, Jr. reminded me that today was the 32nd anniversary of the failed "Operation Beagle Paw."

On the night of the SCOAMF's utter trouncing by the President we have come to know as Reagan II (Mighty Mitt Romney), still CiC Obama ordered a delivery mission of his favorite St. Louis style pizza to be dropped off to the White House (while he could still mooch off the taxpayer's dime).

A brave Air Force crew was dispatched to retrieve Barky's favorite canine topped pizza. Arriving back in DC, things went horribly wrong. A bit of ice had developed upon the White House steps, and while entering, the pie was dropped by one of the lieutenants.

SCOAMF, embarrassed and angered by the curb stomping just given to him by the American people, snapped, and took a swing at the Air Force officer. He was quickly subdued by the Secret Service, arrested, and led from the White House in cuffs. Declared mentally unable to maintain his position, he was removed from office and committed, never to be seen or heard in public again.

Mitt Romney was sworn in early (as Biden was declared mentally unable to serve... likely for years) and ushered in a prosperous, limited government golden age for the US. Which is why, to this day, 32 years later, Pres. Romney is always a unanimous choice as the 2nd best President ever, behind only George Washington himself.

The far-and-away best way to do it would be with assistance, but you could re-enact the end of the Moche people without any local assistance - just drive them out and scatter them through a campaign of assassination and remove the leadership, and create hysteria and empty the cities. I didn't say it would be *nice*.

217 Merovign, seriously your condition sucks. If I were you, I would not eat anything not purchased and prepared by my own hand. That would be a perfectly rational decision for someone in your shoes.

But criminy, to go around whining that everyone isn't sensitive enough to your problem is a different critter. Like peanuts. The airlines no longer serve them because some people have an allergy. That's not rational, that's chickenshit. They are fucking labeled 'peanuts'. Even if you can't read, you should be able to recognize the letter symbols that represent 'peanuts'.

The question kinda becomes -- Do I adapt to the world or does the world have to adapt to me?

It sounds like you have adapted to the world, so that's good. But there is a little secret that everyone knows and few discuss, and it probably helps lead to obesity -- It is Polite to offer someone food and Impolite to decline it. So when you decline, an explanation is probably in order. Now you can jump up and down about this, but what you are insisting is that people not be offended when you are Impolite by inference in their minds.

Or you could just (repeatedly I'm sure) explain that allergies prevent you from participating in this common social ritual. If they persist after the explanation, then get pissed.

I'm not trying to piss you off; I'm giving you a different viewpoint.

There's a proven marketing strategy that you have encountered from charities -- it's called gift giving. A place like the VFW sends you a mailer with a bunch of address labels enclosed and asks for a donation. Why do they do this?

Because they are taking advantage of another social custom. If you receive a gift, you feel obligated to give a gift back. It's another social lubricant.

And if they captured some weapons, like rifles, it would not take them long to produce their own. [/i]

I think that modern rifles would be extremely difficult for the Romans to figure out.

Making a rough copy of an M16 out of steel is not easy, but the Ancients were much more advanced than we credit them. The Antikytheria device is an example, as are the Roman version of the Leatherman (knige, spoon, spike, etc., made of iron, and folding, from 200AD or so).

They might be able to figure out blackpowder, given access to some used brass (but gunpowder and explosives in general were unknown until perhaps 1000AD), but cartridge headspace would have been a tough problem to detect and reverse engineer ... they'd be starting with rimless bottlenecked cartrides, not rimmed straight.

Then there's the primer ... black powder won't do. Assumin they figure out the significance of the small metal dot at the base of the cartridge ... what goes inside? Opening up an unused primer, to see what's inside, is risky, and 1 primer doesn't contain enough material to make analysis easy, not given pre-microscope-era and pre-alchemy-glassware-era technology.

That's an extremely limited view of warfare. It's almost insulted at the suggestion I was thinking of them marching up to the capital city in a line like Redcoats.

But that's exactly how Cortez & Co. approached the capital city. Read Prescott on this. They marched right up to Tenochtitlan and told Montezuma to mow their lawn. If the Aztecs had rushed the Spaniards, they would have lost at most maybe a thousand guys.

Same.  Better sometimes, worse sometimes.  No rhyme, no reason.

I just dislike ignorant people who take the "just push through it!" or "deal with it!" tack.  A friend was saying a similar thing last week... pooh-poohing one of his friends who has Celiacs and saying it was bullshit.

It'd be nice if, just once, people realized that not all "picky eaters" choose their picky-ness.  And asking people with allergies or intolerances to become shut-ins just because they're different...

I'm glad we have friends who understand food issues and also have restaurants to go to that have really sweet staff who want to make sure their customers are ok.

It's not fun to deal with shit from people who act like you prevent them from enjoying things, either...  but that's another story.

338 so Wednesday morning was interesting for the esport scene as MKP played like crap in his group letting Parting get the win and then being completely outclassed by TaeJa. Awesome to have another Team Liquid member in the Ro8 but it means that a season 2 final really will end up being PvP which is frankly boring.

The bigger of the news comes out of The Champions League of Legends tourney as CLG.NA (one of the best western teams) got embarrassed by a Korean b team. On one hand, it's always fun to to see them lose as they're some of the biggest douchebags around (and their post loss meltdowns are always fun to watch) but it also means that the Korean take-over is almost complete with only having Korea beat M5 left to happen.

341 Ok, on the food thing. I have two grills. One I that sits on the deck and is used for everyday use. I have a second in the basement that is a "kosher" grill. The only thing I have ever prepared on this grill is kosher food. I have an entire set of utensils and serving dishes that are used for only kosher meals, and I consulted a rabbi to make certain that it meets the highest standards of the kashrut. I did this originally because I have some friends who live out of town who are Jewish, and while they themselves are not that observant many members of their family do follow the dietary laws. Since I've hosted some get together's and had people in attendance who only eat kosher, as the host it was incumbent on me to provide food they could eat. I do the same for anyone that I invite to the house, I make sure if they have any food allergy's that I don't serve something that they can't eat or offer them an alternative. I've always considered that the duty of the host. Not sure how others feel on the subject. But as a host I'm not offended if people decline to eat certain things. I am not their parents, it's not up to me to tell them what they should and should not eat.

354 The post office has several significant fiscal problems. 1. Price of gas, Congress won't let them hedge. 2. When they do have a surplus, and they have, Congress takes it. 3. Congress screws with their retirement, right now I thought I saw they were overpaying by billions into the system. 4. Congress forces them to keep open post offices and service levels that are not economic. 5. Horrific line management. 6. Pension and retiree health benefits. For the size of the operation it is surprising they aren't in worse shape. We blew 2.5B on a couple of hundred solar jobs for some perspective. I think they could be ok if fuel prices drop and they can get Congress to let them close offices and reduce certain services.

The second one was a miserable pile of suck and fail.

The third one was OK, made even more OK by the appearance of Sean Connery who can make almost any movie better.

What, I said almost.

The fourth one plumbed new levels of suckery that up to that time had rarely been plumbed by modern man. The only reason the plumbing exists at that level of suckitude is...that's where the exit is.

The fifth, presumably, will dive even lower into the suckery, down to pure fucking evil. And once again, Lucas destroys any fond memories I may have once had about his movies.

Does the USPS pay property taxes? NO. Does the USPS have to license their vehicles? NO. Does the USPS pay sales taxes in the localities they operate in? NO. Does the USPS have to get their vehicles inspected by other government agencies? NO.

Since the answer to these questions is NO, the USPS does take money out of my pocket to fund itself.

On the day I mailed my taxes, the union bastards at the post office were coming up to cars that were dropping off their returns trying to get them to save their jobs. Right after I dropped off a fucking check to the government, these bastards walked up to me on FEDERAL PROPERTY to try to get me to support them.

The day the Post Office pays all the taxes that FedEx and UPS pay, then I MIGHT feel for them, but until then you and your union scum brothers can lick my bag.

I decided recently it's not worth trusting restaurants, *most* of my family seems to understand, but it's still hard getting them to even *tell* me when they're going so I don't miss out on *them* just because I can;t have the food. My parents understand, everyone else... meh.

395 The USPS does face declining usage as a factor in their money woes but the main problem is that they are the largest governmental example of EOE.

Too many neer do wells that think they're owed a living but fail to exert the effort and lack the intelligence to understand that they are working for their customers.

I have never seen any large city post office where a large percent of the employees are slackers and belligerent.

Only in smaller towns and cities do you find personnel who have a work ethic and are grateful for the opportunity.

One of the reasons for our failing government agencies is EOE.

Too many are given a job that is difficult to lose who then proceed to do as little as possible either through a sense of entitlement or just plain dumb ignorance.

Cut the Saturday delivery (that's overtime btw) and start eliminating those who can't or won't work.

Win.

I've been on Coreg, Digoxin, and Lasix for three years now. Although I am supposed to take the Coreg twice a day, I only take it once a day because it makes me sleepy. I also take a handful of required supplements every day and, although my arteries are clean, I take Lipitor because I have genetically high cholesterol.

My cardiologist made me go see a psychiatrist and a therapist and now I'm on Klonopin, Zoloft, and Trazadone which zap my energy (not that I had much to begin with).

What problems are you having?

Posted by: Niedermeyer's Dead Horse at April 25, 2012 08:38 PM (piMMO)

401 A good friend of mine, who has since passed away, was diagnosed with breast cancer.  As she was leaving the doctor's office after hearing the diagnosis she happened to pass by a man she didn't know, and as you can imagine, she wasn't smiling since she'd received quite a bad diagnosis, they said something along the lines of "C'mon, smile, it can't be that bad!"  This very mild-mannered friend said she wanted to kick the guy in the crotch.

Her retelling that story has always stuck with me.  You don't know what anybody you may see may be going through.

437 "I feel very conflicted when I encounter a gluten-intolerant person." Heh. Fanatics confuse the issues. True gluten-intolerant folks don't need to project their problems on you. But it is a problem. Like salt, peanuts, or MSG, gluten is everywhere, added for its glue-iness, mostly. That's the same factor that supposedly debilitates intestinal celia in those who are susceptible. I'm old enough to remember when everything was heavily salted. A generation of food naziism later, it got so you couldn't taste anything in a restaurant. Works for me, since I just grab the salt shaker and add as much as I want, but such changes should percolate from expressed customer preference, and food providers' response, not Big Nan! I feel bad for all the people who think they have to "watch their salt intake" when they are probably not getting enough! Mark Twain: Beware of reading health books; you may die of a mistpring. So, the Mrs was really gluten-intol. She baked such great wheat breads & everything, too! This was before we could get glu-free bread in the local grocery like today. What could we do? We had to make major changes. Since she's the world's greatest cook, we just had great non-gluten breads & everything. And she'd sneak her own bread into restaurants and relatives' dinner tables. We not only adjusted, we found right away that we liked her non-gluten baking better, generally, than wheat (YMMV). Wheat is to the universe of flours as iceberg lettuce is to the universe of vegetables. So the upshot is, you all have to eat exactly as we do just so that we can go out to eat and confidently order pasta and bread, knowing it's gluten-free. Say what? Whattaya mean, you don't have any salt here? (Actually, we still avoid baking with wheat, but the doc says she's cured of the g-i blues. Therein lies a story.) Another long drive-by commenting dump. I'm missing all the fun! Darn that real life....

I guess its kinda cool i have some pals who refuse to let me be a shut in, and we throw great parties at the farm, because Grim likes to entertain. But when you throw the party you can have it in the evening when its cool and provide a menu that makes nobody sick and suits the crowd. While I did enjoy the book honestly I thought the book bogged down in parts. The movie I thought covered most of the salient point's wonderfully without a lot of the extraneous details in the book. That is unusual for me, normally I find the books much better than the movies. I think a lot of that is in the book I get a much better feel for the characters because I know what they are thinking. But this was a rare exception for me so I'm really looking forward to part II, even if it is recast.

463 Yeah, Lasix makes you waste potassium and sodium to flush out the excess water.  Spirinolacote is a potassium-sparing diuretic, where the potassium is exchanged back into the kidney, so the worst possible thing is to take a potassium supplement, because then you have increased potassium intake with decreased potassium outflow.

469 Like SoS we like to make our guests comfortable by offering things they want and can have. Well after the first Kosher get together I now have a Jewish family from upstate New York who has more or less unofficially adopted me as an extended family member. I had a buddy that had invited his family down for his daughters wedding, and while his immediate family wasn't orthodox most of his extended family was so they had some pretty special requirements. But I did get the ultimate compliment, one of the grandmothers demanded that I hand over my recipe for Kugel. Most of the prep work was pretty simple, actually the hardest part was planning a meal that included no dairy products whatsoever. The Rabbi advised me that if I was serving meat, I couldn't serve dairy, and vice versa.

471 469 Nevermind the question about the Spironolatone. Are you taking potassium supplements to offset the diuretic? Have you tried Lasix instead? It is very easy to take. Posted by: Niedermeyer's Dead Horse at April 26, 2012 12:55 AM (piMMO) Not anymore and Lasix didn't work. I dropped 40 lbs in 10 days when we switched to Bumetanide. The Lasix might as well have been sugar pills. 478 I pray to God he's not on spirinolactone AND potassium. Posted by: Conservative Crank at April 26, 2012 12:59 AM (1zwZo) I was on both, but *I* stopped the potassium when they stopped regularly checking my blood levels. I also was on reduced diuretics. Between the coreg, the valsartan, and the spironolactone, potassium responses can be unpredictable. In theory all three are potassium-sparing, but in practice, not always. I get some potassium from a multivitamin but nowhere near as much as with the other. I haven't had a blood test in a while because my doctors are fucking lazy and never answer messages, and I'm tired and can't remember shit. I should be seeing a new doctor soon, even if only briefly.

Posted by: Niedermeyer's Dead Horse at April 26, 2012 01:03 AM (piMMO) I am hoping to see a new Dr. soon. That will be cardiologist number 7. The cause is unknown but they seemed sure it was viral. It was acute with no scarring, no blockage or stiffness of arteries, no signs of permanent damage. It could have been bacterial or fungal, I was on antibiotics previously because they thought it was Pneumonia. There's a lot of unexplained factors involved that are boring to get into. Like why I walked into the ER and was sitting up and joking with people when I had barely any blood flowing. It took them 12 hours to figure out what was going on. Why my blood sugar was off the charts when I got to the ER, came down to normal almost immediately afterward, and stayed normal after I finally stopped taking the Evil Metformin. That kind of thing. I did my homework on the ICD, the data is sparse for my status, but I seem to be a bad choice for that. You people are posting too fast!

We have gone to a completely gluten free diet at our house, with the single exception that I do buy sourdough bread for myself, since I am addicted to sandwiches. I think that if I were diagnosed with this, I would just go ahead and shoot myself, because life without sandwiches is not worth living. However, until you get used to it, it is really frustrating trying to find things to eat. Fortunately, we live in metro Los Angeles area, so there is no lack of places carrying gluten-free stuff. And recently, they have come out with gluten-free Bisquick, which makes my life ever so much simpler. It is amazing how much stuff you can make with Bisquick.

Viral here. I had bronchitis that wouldn't go away. I drove myself to the E.R. after a couple of months of feeling like I wasn't getting oxygen and dreaming about drowning and only after I stayed up all night because every time I lowered my head I started choking. I walked in and told them that I had very mild asthma and although I had never had an attack, thought I was having one. They scolded me for not using an inhaler but said they wanted to do a Cat scan (I think that's what is was) and after about 10 seconds, rolled me out of the machine to inform me it wasn't asthma. Two days later they released me from the hospital and told me to go home and rest, which I did, for one day, and then went back to work and put in a 12 hour and a 15 hour day before my H.R. department told me not to show back up without a release form. Two weeks later they implanted a Bi-V pacer with AICD. My EF was at 10 by that time.

All you have to do is walk down the street one and catch a bug, the same bug millions of others across the world have caught with no issues at all, and your whole life changes forever.

497 With the previous supervisor, did they just not know the expectations and thus had no idea they were underperforming, or did they just not care because they were of the impression that there were no consequences for being a slackard? I think it was sort of a vicious circle really - the supervisor let them slack off, so they let him slack off, and it just got worse and worse as time progressed. The upper management started to notice the terrible numbers and were trying to work with the previous supervisor, but they were pretty much at wits end with him by the time that he got fired for the email debacle. Odds are good that if he hadn't gotten fired for that he would have been out the door a week or two later for performance. The previous supervisor pretty much loaded his team with people he considered friends and as a result they never really went to upper management to let them know what was really going on. Funny thing though, they were the ones really getting the short end of that deal. They couldn't get paid time off or most anything that required their supervisor to put in paperwork, etc.

500 515 SoS, I have previous experience in firing people in a non right to work state, IL. If you fire someone for a documented cause, ie they violated rules as listed in the employee manual -- they are still not eligible for UE benefits. You may have to go to a hearing to fight it, but if your documentation is in order they will lose.

Being fired is not an automatic 'get unemployment' card. Far from it. If this is true in liberal IL, it's likely true in most states.

The bureaucrats and courts will tend to side with the employee more often than other at-will states, however, because they're all commies. If the company handles things properly, it's usually not that bad, but sometimes it turns into a nightmare. Some companies also have a "surrender first" policy to employment lawsuits that I will *never* understand.

I should be seeing a new doctor soon, even if only briefly.

If you do, do a lot of research.  At my last physical, I was diagnosed wth high blood pressure. The nurse measured 130/80, the doctor 170/80 a few minutes later. The EKG said I have (or had) LVH, and he said it was due to high BP. I pointed out that, 2 days before, I was running track: 10 110m sprints, then pushups, followed by 10 minutes of stair climbing ... 4 days per week for the past 2 years ...  after 5 years * 50weeks * 5d/wk of cycling. The cardiologist (later) did an ultrasound (I watched, and saw zero blockage), but I hit 200/100 on the treadmill. I was arguing with both physicians ... so I did some research. Among otherthing, I found out that hitting 17-/xxx WHILE exercising is reasonable ... 200/100 is life-threatening if you're sitting around, but while strenuously exercising ... maybe not.

Prescriptions: Losartan, Simvastatin & spiro.  I started having left-side-only quad muscle pain ... and the twins cut their job hours waaaay down ... told the doctor I had to get off Spiro. I had done some reading about spiro ... 25mg should be no problem, but ... This is when I did some detailed reading on spiro. If you're over 50, it probably won't affect you much ... but in combination with other stuff, ask your physician.

6 months later, I told the doctor I had to quit the statin, as my cholestrol had been at 80, down from a high of 140, and I was still having muscular "problems" ... still only on one side. We were still arguing. But I found out that statins interfere with skeletal muscle growth/re-growth/repair/etc, and affect my family quite badly.

More research, specifically, checking ALL the Wiki links (and then verufying). It seems that LVH is a very bad thing, unless you do a lot of rowing, or cross-country skiing or ...... cycling. Then it is good (The only GOOD Wiki link). I switched to another guy, who has a large number of athletic patients. The new guy listens to me, says we will do an ekg after I'm sufficienty de-trained.

Moral of the story: pay attention to what your physicians say, but do some research. Research what they say,cross-check, etc., and if you change physicians, change to someone who at least works with people with health situations similar to yours.

And, they destroy a basic building block of energy, Co-Q-10.  My cardiologist told me that Co-Q-10 is something you learn about in med school but then never really think about again because, well, it's just there. They hadn't really encountered anything that jeopardized the amount in our system, and then they learned that one of the statin makers had made the connection very early on but decided not to reveal the information.

Three years ago I could barely find any information about it on the web except for a few cardiologists raising hell about it, now, of course, the supplements industry has gotten a hold of it and are pushing it like crazy to each and every person whether they are on statins or not.

Exactly. If my numbers were real bad I could see, but I didn't think 184 cholesterol was "that" bad to where I have to start taking fucking pills. I have a friend on that shit, his memory is shot. He leaves sun glasses at my house, comes by to get them, and leaves the frigging things AND the spares he was using. He leaves stuff here all the time. Earlier today he calls me, I tell him and I was taking a ride to my dad's and asked if he wanted to go. He says let me call you back after i make sure I don't have to do anything. An hour later he calls back and says wtf , are you picking me up or what? I said um dude..you were supposed to call me back to let me know if you are even going with me. He says "oh yeah I forgot".

yeah right, I'm just gonna rush right out and grab those pills.

529 Moral of the story: pay attention to what your physicians say, but do some research. Research what they say,cross-check, etc.,and if you change physicians, change to someone who at least works with people with health situations similar to yours. And, they destroy a basic building block of energy, Co-Q-10. Posted by: Niedermeyer's Dead Horse at April 26, 2012 01:40 AM (piMMO) And it's *vitally* important to repairing the heart. Same here. Thank God! And, even more, my company offers and almost unheard of benefit: 26 weeks of fully paid short-term disability. I didn't even think about taking when I was diagnosed and recovering and returned to work much too early but now, three years later, I have worked myself into a hole working far too many hours and skipping doses because of getting home so late, so my doc has taken me out of work. He has applied for me to take the entire 26 weeks off to get back on track mentally and physically. AND...he required me to see a therapist to deal with stress.

Now I'm just awaiting approval from Metlife.

If approved, I intend to make the best of it by taking my meds, unloading at the therapist's office, taking yoga, and walking on the beach.

545 lisinopril and other ACE-inhibitors can cause a chronic cough in certain people, not sure why, but it's the most common reason for patient's to request coming off the medicine.  Losartan is an ARB, so it works in the same hormone pathway as ACE-Is but blocks a recpetor instead of an enzyme.  Fairly similar end clinical effects, but more expensive.

I have odd numbness, primarily left side (but not only), usually hand up to elbow, sometimes lower leg. When exercising, mainly.

I have exactly those symptoms, but not while exercising. I'm still de-training. I have had left-side jaw numbness once, extending back to the base of the skull. I had a twinge (psychologically felt like an extremely small explosion) in my left ankle a few days ago. Occasionally, when I start to fall asleep, I get a "falling" sensation, like I'm completely shutting down, and something tells me that I have to force myself to wake up. I told all of these things to both physicians ... no particular interest.

Prior to taking these medcations, I had never had any of these symptoms, Not once. Not ever.

It's good to hear that these symptoms are apparently indicative of ... nothing.

A lot of those weird neuro symptoms are just that--weird neuro symptoms, and nothing more.  I know it often drives patients nuts to hear it, but burning/tingling in your arm or leg with a negative MRI usually means no serious pathology.  If they still are not satisfied, I give them a referral to a neurologist, who can do a bunch more tests before telling them the same thing.

In your case, Arbalest, I can't say for sure what's going on, neuropathy can happen from some medciations, and whether it's transient, semi-permament or permament is not something that can always be reliably predicted.  Or, you could have a radiculopathy where the nerve plexus is getting dinged at times by a bulging disc, bone spur, or spasming muscle, causing the limb symptoms.  None of these are "serious" as in life- or limb-threatening, but I won't deny they can be a pain in the ass.

I try to be pleasant and not get all up in people's grills. I cooperate as much as I can, I even take their freaking drugs that make me ill and follow the restrictions they haven't changed even though my heart has improved dramatically. I have been asking around and *none* of the cardiologists around here are the ones that get the nod. Basically I found a good one 450 miles away after I spent all my money, so I'm juggling trying to go see them - and *they* are not very available right now. He's my Obi Wan Kenobi, though. Doctors are like oceanographers. They study a big, complex system they don't fully understand but they can explain at a sort of Dicovery Channel level. They know enough to predict basic responses, but some weather change throws them off. Like with Celiac disease, they've identified like 6-7 genes but have no idea which combinations cause what, and why it expresses in so many symptoms or none at all. There's a study I lost track of that I had links to from years ago about *general* medical effectiveness, about how often a medicine simply doesn't have the expected effect at all. Because the system is too complicated to be sure what's *actually* going on some of the time.

Conservative Crank: thanks for the free advice.

According to a personal trainer I used several year ago, I'm in excellent health and condition, and "playing for free": I'm undamaged. I decided to stay that way, after my third sparring session; I dodged so much that I did not get hit, but I did give myself a 10 hour headache.

Some years ago I solidified my decision to keep exercising at a rather high level, until I was no longer capable ... while visiting my mother in the nursing home, I met a ~94y.o. gentleman (wheelchair bound, cheated death 4 times, yet chasing my mother, so I shook his hand and expressed my pleasure in meeting him) ...

... and then later, 2 other gentlemen, brothers ... who did not fit in ... they walked around about as well and as fast as (probably) the average commenter here.

It turns out they were retired farmers ... the younger brother was 94 or 95, so his older brother was 96-97 ... I therefore chose muscular fatigue, sprains and bruises over medication.

576 I really like my current doc, and will concede that he often knows more than I do about medicine. He's my 40th birthday present to myself, 'cause my previous physician ranked lower than dogshit in my estimation -- especially after he ran two consecutive lab tests for infection when I started having medication sensitivities.

When I started shopping for a new doc a few years back I called around and the first question I asked was "Do you take Medicaid?" Whenever they answered with "Yes" my response was, "Ok, thanks." Then I'd hang up.

594 Since we're talking medicine, I've been seeing this dude for an issue of a persistent problem.  Anywho, I see the guy and the first thing he says is I'm diabetic.

Slow down there, boss, lets not jump to conclusion.

And then he did some A1C3 test thingy.  I think that's something that a guy should prepare for cause then I wouldn't have nibbled on a piece of cheesecake beforehand.  Needless to say, it didn't help.

So he insists, I do the whole figner jabbing thing with the glucometer, blah blah blah blah long story short my blood sugar levels were pretty normal.

So I've been watching what I eat, do the low carb thing, slowly but surely bringing my weight down.  Maybe I'm prediabetic, I dunno.

So I see him last month.  Same shit, but he still assumes I'm diabetic.  Do another A1C3 thingy.  Normal.  I think he's coming around.

Still trying to lose weight.  Still watching what I eat.  Slowly but surely the weight is coming down.  It went up a bit while my sister was visiting, alas, but it's heading back down again.  Trying to keep that trend line edged down and I think so far so good.

Posted by: Robert at April 26, 2012 02:55 AM (4ixH5) Like salt, doctors often have blinders on when it comes to blood sugar. Now, people really do have blood sugar problems (don't get me started on all the different conditions lumped together under "diabetes" as if it were one and only one thing), and some of them are helped or even saved by treatment. But one thing you have to search hard to get a doctor to admit is that not everyone's healthy baseline is *exactly* the same, and A1C is not only not a perfectly reliable indicator, but a lot of the testing is sloppy, and things like viruses (me) can not only change your blood sugar, they can actually change your A1C levels directly. It's buried in the medical literature and people are set in their ways. Did they ever even do a response test? More and more doctors are skipping that and it's the way they're supposed to do it.

603 I remember that day.   I was with a unit under 18th Airborne Corps and Ft. Bragg.  They woke us up early.  We knew this wasn't the usual drill alert because there were MPs at the entrance to the barracks and concertina wire was being run around the buildings.  Some of the guys went to the pay phones in the vestibule area of the barracks, by the CQ desk but the microphone elements had been removed. This was the first time we had experienced this much security without any warning.  We were instructed to cover our unit patches with duct tape and we went to the motor pool and were instructed to get all of our equipment flight ready and cover all unit markings on the vehicles with duct tape.

Part of the prep for getting the vehicles ready to move by air were the obvious securing of all stuff inside them, make sure all the equipment inside the vehicle shelters were properly secured, all the glass on the vehicles was taped with an X pattern using duct tape and only enough fuel was put into the vehicles to get them to "Green Ramp", get them on and off the plane.  We would refuel them when the vehicles came off the aircraft.  This was to reduce the fire hazard of the fuel to the extent possible.

The Air Force guys were checking out the vehicles and were being much pickier than normal about anything being not "just so" than they were when we ran regular practice drills.  Once the vehicle was checked out and passed, it was loaded on a C-141.  We were in a staging area and I noticed a sight that I had never seen before, the unit armorers were counting out basic loads of live ammunition.  That made me a little nervous as this was Carter's Army and there were some people in my unit that I wasn't sure I would trust with live ammunition.  But this must have been about the time the mission was scrubbed because after hanging around a while, the told us that we were standing down, the vehicles were coming off the planes and we were to take everything back to the unit area and undo all of our tape work.

When we got back, the concertina wire was gone, microphone elements were back in the phones and the MPs were gone.  My unit was part of the newly formed "Rapid Deployment Joint Task Force" that Carter had created.  I'm not sure if we learned later that day or the next morning that there had been a failed rescue attempt.   Carter announced it at 1:00 in the morning according to Wikipedia but there might have been some rumors going around before that, I can't recall, it's been a while, but I do seem to remember that when I heard about it, it was broad daylight and I was outside so it might have been the next morning.  That's when it began to sink in that had they gone in there and got stuck, the Rapid Deployment Force was going in after them loaded for bear.

I will say that *everything* changed after that day in my unit.  We got a lot more serious about what we were doing starting the very next day.  Also, I think whatever support Carter had up to that point among some of the troops, basically giving him the benefit of the doubt over the whole Iranian situation, fell apart, too.  Rumors were going around that Col. Beckwith was going to be thrown under the bus for it but as far as I know that didn't happen but I remember the idea of that happening pissed off a lot of us as he was a pretty much legendary around Ft. Bragg at the time.

We were all pretty close to the edge that day without really realizing it at the time, and we were all pretty disappointed when we found out what had happened.

606 truvia not sugar! Posted by: Adriane at April 26, 2012 02:59 AM (VVZaH) Stevia is *HORRIFYING*. Your mileage may vary, but I'd rather sweeten things with coal dust. That's another thing, people's taste buds differ. The best fake sweetener I found is called "Ideal." It's Xylitol and sucralose with a dash of dextrose and maltodextrin. It's so little sugar it should have little or no insulin effect, and it's not as nasty as Stevia or pure Aspartame / Sucralose or most of the blends. It also depends on what you have it in. If you put it in coffee you don't know it's bitter because the drink is bitter. I don't drink coffee.

Obviously the part where Carter and Christopher dicked around for over a year is true, I mean the rest of it.

Posted by: Robert at April 26, 2012 03:08 AM (4ixH5) If a doctor says the word "prediabetic," I ask them who is *not* prediabetic, in their opinion. Because it seems like normal blood sugar is "prediabetic" now in the guidelines. They should not be trying to push people's blood sugar below normal. Hypoglycemia kills brain cells.

Well, missing out on you and the other 'ettes is definitely a downside to my adventures.  I went to the bar to have a few drinks and read, and wandered over to the strip club while I sobered up.  It has strippers who aren't tattooed head to toe, which is nice.  And as much as I love this group of knuckleheads, I had to get out of the house before I went crazy.  She was kind of cute, but reminded me of Amy Winehouse, which was not a good thing.

I have this last remaining stash - they say the "mini" version they have now for water bottles is the same but it's nowhere locally and three times as expensive. It tastes better than everything but real soda. For some odd reason it takes a day or two to acclimate to it after a long stretch, but it tastes so good. Tapwater usually tastes funny to me. 636 My husband went to the doctor because his feet were swollen. They gave him a sugar test, it's very high, so he must be diabetic, right? That's they way they treated him for a while...until the doctor for some reason decides to do a CBC. Very high count of white blood cells. A subsequent biopsy confirmed a form of leukemia. The high sugar level was a byproduct of his body struggling to deal with the situation.

He's had a bone marrow transplant and is considered cured. He has better sugar levels than anyone I know. But he still has an occasional problem with swollen feet.

655 I've seen serotonin tattoos more than once. I've also seen THC tattoos with two rings, which is wrong, but we're talking about dopers here.

Hmm, the shape is similar, although that tattoo is way more cartoonish than hers.

661 Ok, I'm thinking that it was either serotonin or misdrawn THC.  Thanks everyone!

664 Serotonin is somehow sexier than THC. Also, I am not sure whether to be shocked that the exotic dance videos on YouTube are about as titillating as waiting in line at the DMV.

Chocolate and some chili powder or chocolate made in Mexico like Ibarra?

Combo sounds funky.

696 Chocolate and some chili powder or chocolate made in Mexico like Ibarra? Combo sounds funky. Posted by: Adriane at April 26, 2012 05:26 AM (VVZaH) Abuelita (Nestle) chocolate, partially melted in half and half, sweetened further with maple syrup. Add GF Bisquik and a beaten egg, a couple of pats of butter, stir, microwave for 30 seconds and stir, microwave for 2.5-3 minutes. It does sound *extremely* crazy but it makes a rich, moist consistent cake, slightly tangy/dark chocolate, with a sweet maple edge. I love maple. We're improvisational cooks in my family. I rarely measure and I made up that recipe on the fly.

703 Also, keep an eye on it in the microwave. Depending on the container and the mixture, it may overflow before it cooks. Also, let me know if you know who the person is who came up with the idea that all microwaves should beep incessantly after use, and that the feature can't be turned off. I would like to stuff a raw turkey down their gullet.

712 Good Morning Morons!  Dayshift crowd coming in.

Good old Jimmeh Carter and the Iran fiasco.  I used to have a co-worker who's father was on that abortion of a raid into Iran.  Why did it fail?  Piss poor planning caused by intra-service rivalry with nobody in charge.  Every branch of the services wanted a piece of the action and nobody at the top took charge. Helos went in with no dust covers over the intakes in desert conditions.

But that pretty much sums up the Carter regime.  The only thing that prevents him from being the worst President in history was the fact that he was in office for only 4 years. Iran was his creation in the first place. The Panama Canal was not his only foreign policy win.

No surprises there.
