Twenty Years Ago: The LA Riots
It was 20 years ago on April 29, 1992 that the Los Angeles riots began. At the time I was living just a few miles north of the epicenter and the riots forever colored my views on social unrest. Since then I have almost no tolerance for it and I've sworn to never be unarmed again.
Most people can still recall the beating of truck driver Reginald Denny. I remember it well plus the fact that I had passed through the same intersection just a few days before

Here Neo-neocon points out that even among the violence and mayhem there were real heroes who stepped up to save Denny:

The quote in the title of this piece is from Bobby Green, one of four black people who were heroes in the LA riots of twenty years ago. But there's no "just" about it; the acts were rays of hope in an otherwise bleak picture....Murphy saw that Denny had managed to drag himself back into the cab of the truck, which was moving very slowly. Murphy ran to the passenger side and jumped on the running board; he saw a woman named Lei Yuille comforting Denny inside the cab. Just then, a hulking guy named Bobby Green leaped on the running board of the other side. The two stared at each other through the windows, each fearing the other was a rioter.
...Green jumped in and drove the massive truck a terrifying three miles to the hospital, with Murphy's girlfriend Barnett guiding the way by driving in the car in front. Murphy clung to the outside of the truck for the entire journey, feigning to be a rioter by pounding on the outside of the vehicle as if he had taken it for loot.
From his position on the running board, Murphy was also able to guide Green, who couldn't see through the truck's cracked windows. "Each one of us could not carry on the task without the other," says Murphy. "Bobby couldn't drive the truck without me on the outside. Mr. Denny was attended to from the inside [by Yuille], and we couldn't drive the truck without Terry in the front of us."
The result was a perfect collaboration. "We all came together as a team," he says. "It was like it was meant to be."

A Dose of Optimism: American Companies Going Strong
Critics are always predicting the collapse of the Anglo-American capitalist model but somehow it never seems to happen.
To hear the doomsayers from a few years back tell it, this competitive capitalist model was inherently unstable and prone to collapse; the recession was just the final nail in the coffin.
Four years later, these predictions are looking rather silly. A Wall Street Journal analysis of the American marketplace shows that, rather than falling apart under the weight of the recession, large firms are doing extremely well and have taken advantage of the recession to streamline their operations.
Overall, though, the Journal found that S&P 500 companies have become more efficient-and more productive. In 2007, the companies generated an average of $378,000 in revenue for every employee on their payrolls. Last year, that figure rose to $420,000.
Which means that when the world economy does start to recover, the US will be primed to take best advantage of it.

And note that two of these are coming back purely due to cultural/political reasons. And that syphilis was almost killed off just a decade ago:
The discovery of penicillin in 1943 as well as a greater awareness of the dangers of unprotected sex led to increasingly fewer people presenting symptoms of the disease. In 2000, public health officials announced that syphilis was almost completely eradicated in the US. But over the next decade the number of people testing positive more than doubled.

Time and time again, it has been shown that the school's league tables are routinely fiddled in order to benefit this or that school. At the same time, our so-called education system - ruined by lefty, progressive teaching methods - can barely teach our children to write English properly. If your a younger reader, you probably didn't even notice the two deliberate mistakes in this comment.

Woot! ONT. Although I'd argue the work done on the Gaming thread earlier almost made it an honory ONT.
The only thing I have to ad to this, is thankfully the midwest is highly riot resistant. Should one happen however, I'm locking my doors and arming my 12 gauge. I figure with the 15 slugs I keep around and the 2 boxes of skeet ammo I should be able to hold off anyone who wanders into the suburbs to make trouble.

Well Stuck said he would only take the dog until we could find another home for it. I doubt that will end up being how this works out. Molly has really taken to the puppy which surprised me, but I'm very happy about it.

I go through the Walden Street stoplight on Rte 2 on my way to work, as do tens of thousands of others. The pond is about two miles from downtown Concord. The place was probably more remote in 1945 than in 1845.

I've got something like tense. Actually not tense, but logic.
"Time and time again, it has been shown . . ." is the past. (The tense is actually the present perfect, but it's describing events that were completed in the past.)
"At the same time, schools can barely . . ." is the present. The past can't be "the same time" as the present.
Anyone else?

Using words correctly, and that word 'rightly' was wrongly, is not found among the LA Riots meme. Please find a brick and hit someone with it. Your situational grammar will fix itself spontaneously... 'stuff ' is what you steall in the riot , after applying that brick you've been carrying.

Each generation has to learn the same hard lessons. The same shit happened during the Watts riots in the 60's and businesses fled the area, and people whined about the lack of locally available groceries, etc. and there was 20+ years of relative peace after that. The next generation didn't learn from the previous

I got the impression that "fiddled" without a preposition is some Britishism, and although "in order" is redundant, it's not bad grammar. "Education" wouldn't necessarily be wrong, because the system itself isn't educational. A DVD or an experience could be educational. Cf. "management system" and "irrigation system." You don't say "irrigational system."

I lived in L.A. during the years leading up to the Rodney King riots, and left the city to go on active duty in the Army just weeks prior to the riots. When I lived in the city, my buddies and I would frequently go to B&B Guns in North Hollywood to buy guns and ammo. Pretty much every time we were there, we noticed that the place was full of Koreans, buying just about every type of bullet-launcher imaginable. We used to joke to each other: "Wow, looks like the Koreans are arming themselves to the teeth. Maybe they know something we don't."

BB Guns was a great place. One-stop shopping for all your firearm-related needs. Sadly, sometime after the North Hollywood shootout, they went out of business. I understand it had something to do with some sort of dispute between the business partners. Plus, the fact that the L.A. city council has been doing its level best for years to run all of the gun stores out of town.

Ages and ages ago, the Good Ex-BF and I went to see Like Water For Chocolate. The end of the movie is this grand dramatic emotional scene where the lovers finally get together after years and years. (Spoiler ahead) Being me, I leaned over and whispered to him "I'd have him croak from a heart attack right now". Swear by the insanity of cthulhu, as the words were coming out of my mouth, Our Hero has a heart attack and dies. We both stare gape mouthed and then he hisses at me "You made that happen!" I slap both hands over my mouth trying to stifle the hysterical laughter, he's doubled over because he's laughing so hard and the people all around us, many of whom are weeping at the great emotional scene, look like they're going to kill us. There was no possible way I could explain it.

When I was a kid we called them "black racers." They're rat snakes. Very beneficial animals.

Hate to go all herpetological on y'all, but:
2 common black snakes in the eastern US--
1) Black racer, Coluber constrictor, smaller, faster, very active & nervous, eats lots of rodents
2) Black rat snake, Elaphe obsoleta, larger (up to 7 ft +) slower, more calm, also eats lots of rodents, and birds--it is fairly arboreal. Has a whitish throat/belly.
They are easy to tell apart if you've studied them, but can easily be confused.
Oh, and both harmless to humans.

There was a post here about folks who are growing and milling their own wheat and somewhere within the article it was mentioned that wheat is perfect for stocking up as un-milled wheat can last for years. The funny thing is that they compared it sarcastically to arugula.

If your a younger reader, you probably didn't even notice the two deliberate mistakes in this comment.
I was taught that if you wanted to set off an idea when a comma, semi-colon or parentheses were not right you used a double dash with a space between the beginning and end of them. Singe dashes were only to be used without spaces in terms like sub-par.
But maybe my teachers were full of shit.

I'm not freaked out about it. It's kinda amusing to me. I live in the deep South in a mostly rural area surrounded by trees. Snakes are not a rarity in my yard.
The coolest one I've seen in my yard was a hog nosed snake, aka the puff adder. It's non venomous and fairly rare; an online article claimed it was extinct in MS. I sent the author a pic and a request for a correction.

As MRE alternatives there are also some dehydrated/freeze-dried food some of which are advertised to have shelf lives of up to 25 yrs.
Don't some of those "Completes" microwave dinners have disturbing shelf lives? They're heat treated messes I'd imagine they'd never actually go bad.

I would suggest looking at a company called Honeyville Farms -- they got their start selling long-term food stuffs to Mormons. Honeyville sells all kinds of freeze-dried and dehydrated food: prices are reasonable and shipping costs inside the lower 48 states is a steal.
A company called Shelf Reliance is also pretty good but their shipping costs are higher. You could also look at Mountain House prepared meals available through Amazon.com.

It hasn't gotten as much coverage as it deserves but what has become a leading cause of premature death among young black men in the San Fernando Valley is Hispanic gangs asserting dominance.
The cops know about it but have no idea what to do about it when they aren't allowed to use the threat of deportation against the gang members who are nearly all illegals. Those who do manage to get deported are rarely gone more than a few months.
If there is new rioting it will be another case of idiots burning down and looting their own neighborhood. I don't think even the liberals will be in the mood for a massive appeasement campaign again.

Missouri is full of Copperheads, I don't think there's been a documented death from them in at least 100 years. (I know that's true if you exclude "Elderly" and "otherwise sick" people, but I think it's true generally.)
That being said, I'm told it's a pretty painful bite, and you may lose some muscle in the area. There are a few documented pet deaths (mostly smaller cats/dogs.)

Actually, that is an interesting question.
If Romney gets elected, the Republicans in Congress replay 2000-2006 on steroids.
If Obama wins do we see a replay of 1994, or a replay of the years since 2010 when we saw a lot of talk and no actual action? I'd argue that depends on how Obama wins.
If he runs, successfully, as a moderate versus Romney's "far right agenda", I think the Republicans cower. If he wins because the right finally says no more, then I think the odds of actually seeing a fight increase dramatically.
I don't trust Boehner or McConnell to do the right thing. I do trust them to do the things they believe are most likely to keep them in office. Watching the right destroy Romney's candidacy might well persuade them that working with conservatives is a smarter solution then giving us rhetoric while not doing a thing to upset the State Media and the permanent bureaucracy.

The one I saw was amazing...I was walking thru a scrub park, as I finished it, I saw what looked like a blown-out truck tire across the path...it had some MASS, it was not really flat on the ground, like a snake shd be. As I walked closer, I knew it had to be an indigo, since there are no blown-out tires in this county park! I had a decision to make: approach fast, and maybe scare it; or approach slow, and maybe get there too late. I cd see it was already moving, so I sprinted up to it, just in time to see the end of its tail disappear into the brush. The tail was kinda stubby, shaped like my pinky.
It had to be 6 ft long.

Romney does also, of course, though we already know he is going to borrow the McCain playbook so he is throwing that option away for all intents and purposes.
But then conservatives get a say too, unless of course we align ourselves with candidate Romney, in which case his voice will become ours for the next four years if he loses, and the next 8 if he wins.
If we don't align ourselves with him though we are free to point out that both Romney and Obama are endorsing a statist status quo that cannot last.
So no, Obama winning, which he most likely will, does not guarantee congressional cowardice - but supporting Romney will.

JEF winning re-election is bad, but not having Congress become more 'R' is worse. The House and Senate races are critical, as are all state races.

Dog-gate sort of proves otherwise; we didn't stoop to his level, but we did play the game his way, and he lost ... big. He quit early, I think because he couldn't take the heat, but the end game would be that what the 6- or 9- y.o. Obama did is not the point, the point is what the 34-y.o. Obama wrote (or did he?), and what the 44-y.o. Obama said in the audio version ... I wonder if Axelturf saw this.
I think that the Romney Campaign is smart enough and tough enough to easily spank Axelturf at his own game ... will they do it? JEF is slowly becoming more un-likeable each day, and certain MSM players are starting to bail ... no reason for Romney to do anything now. But the campaign picks up in a couple of months.
We need to see the Romney Campaign play for keeps. We need to hear and see JEF's utter failures, his questionable legal actions, his expropriation of credit (really, did he think about the OBL situation overnight? Did Panetta really force him and Jarret to act?), his mediocrity, all aired on TV. We need to see the MSM exposed as the propagandists they have become.

You see, I am a realist. Our Founding Fathers may have thought they were building a society based on the Roman Republic, but they were men first and did many things for their own benefit. Hell, the vaunted Roman Republic was based on self interest.
So, if we are going to create a society that gives incentives to leaders for doing the right thing, the first thing we have to do is pay our politicians more money, that way they won't try to enrich themselves at the public trough. The second thing would be public financing of all campaigns, since we will need to get rid of special interests. Third thing we would need to do is make sure that those who are elected know what the right thing is, that way there is no problem as to how they will vote on issues. In this utopia, all votes will be 435-0 and 100-0. This sounds great, but it kinda sounds like the old Soviet Union.
As for a savior, no thanks, I already have one. I know that all men are flawed, and that all politicians will at some point disappoint me. That is one of the things I know going into an election, so I don't get all butthurt when a politician does what a politician does. I also know that the only politician that will do what I want and vote how I want 100% of the time would be me.
Even though Romney isn't my ideal candidate, I will vote for and support him. I will not sit around whipping my skippy hoping that some mythical conservative candidate will make a last minute jump into the race because "America is screaming out 'help' to them". Those candidates almost always tend to be even more egotistical than the party nominees because they think they are special.

But in a face-to-face debate, or even a satellite media back & forth, Romney will have a MUCH easier time against the JEF, since on so many positions they are light years apart. Romney basically spent the whole primaries saying "we all agree, but the other guy just isn't as accomplished in the private sector as I am," and the superpacs did the rest.
As Ace has shrewdly noted, the "he's a nice kid but just not up to a man's job" approach may actually work better for Romney than the more jugular-hitting angle we'd prefer, esp. since Romney really just doesn't have it in him to cut up an opponent like a hatchetman.
Let's keep that role for ourselves!!

In 4 years I will be eligible for social security and I will take it but I have enough of my own fking money and investments that if they decide to do the right things to make it a financially viable institution again I can get by. I was paying $1800 a month for a $5k deductable policy for my wife and I. I would prefer the government would quit making me pay the healthcare for illegals and stop the silly and onerous malpractice suits so it is affordable rather than have the nanny state take care of me. I would rather see stupid drug laws cease than support a huge penal system that costs $50K per inmate and produces super well fed criminals. I would rather see school vouchers and competition rather than the bloated ineffectual public school system we have now. I could go on for a long while with examples.

In the short term we need enough political leaders to began a radical downsizing of the federal government. Arguably, a bare majority in the House can do it by itself. Certainly control of both houses of Congress is enough - if the will is there.
In the mid to long term we need an informed electorate that will re-install the traditional incentives and penalties America has used to keep its government in check.

However, if you can build a system where advancing self interest benefits society, you can create a truly successful society - note that this is also why capitalism works on the economic front.
On the political front both Rome and the early US did this by putting a high premium on honor - Washington, for example, valued the honor of being the president more then the power, and wealth, a kingship could have brought.
Both also did this by enfranchising a generally educated electorate. True, there weren't many issues in play so it made it easier to analyze, but this was also part of the system.

It only occurs to me now for some reason. It's so obvious. There is most definitely a plan, or multiple plans, for riots when Zimmerman is acquitted. It's all being set up now. Watch for a possible push to hold the trial before the elections -- that would be coming out of the White House, but there are no doubt lots of differerent people with plans to exploit this for their own purposes. If and when the rioting starts, it will not be limited to Sanford Fla whenver the verdict is announced.
There was talk of premeditation of the '92 L.A. riots, you know. Allegations that gangs readied themselves to loot sporting goods stores for weapons pending the verdict, and instigated violence as cover when the time came.

Newt, Romney, Cain, Perry, Santorum, etc all each had at least one easy line of attack for the State Media. And in each case the media let lose not long after the individual gained front runner status...except for one...
The State Media barely touched Romney on the "class issue" prior to his sewing up the nomination, and they are still holding on to his religion until closer to the election.
Expect to watch the State Media define Mormonism within the next few months in a profoundly negative way for the majority of the electorate that has no idea of the details of Romney's religion. It will be an ugly thing.

BTW, people were not politically plugged in back then as some would have you believe. A great deal of the people would have preferred to remain subjects of the crown. The reality of those days is that the media of the time was even more partisan than it is today. Papers were founded to promote the interests of certain politicians.
Your premise that people will do what is good for the society is nice, but it doesn't take into account what people actually think is good for society.

Running without any budget at all, taking unconstitutional stances on legal cases, bypassing checks and balances by using czars and EO's, thumbing it's nose at the War Powers Act in Libya -- this administration doesn't seek to take control of our Republic.....it seeks to devolve our government to whim and position over laws and process. Obama's administration needs to be shut down, now -- even Billy Jeff's would be an improvement, buying us time for the congressional wave to move further along.
So it's not that you need to love Romney -- it's that you need to have faith that Romney would work through channels, cross the t's, do the required parts before jumping off into ego-trips, and allow us to enjoy the rule of law and due process under that law. Obama's actions over the last three years make this as clear as glass.

If all of the $300M+ people in this country had a dollar taken from them and sent to Washington, they'd all care $1 -- maybe $5, if they hold to archaic beliefs like "honor" and "justice". But someone in DC would joyously spend $1M to divert it -- that would be an instant 300-to-1 payoff. To say that checks and guards should be in place that would require an additional $1M in time or effort to subvert completely misses the point. Concentrating that much in one place means that there is a built-in advantage for the crooks. [Incidentally, that is why defined benefit pension plans are evil -- and mostly have been looted and are bankrupt.]

Hoss - who knows, maybe you're still reading - someone beat me to McP's in Coronado (the SEAL bar), and I thought all the Persian places were in La Jolla, so I'll have to check out Sadaf - but my first Mexican suggestion close to downtown would be the oddly named Jimmy Carter's, on 5th, up north a bit from downtown, near the park.
Really quite decent border Mex (the predominant "local" variety in these parts), but also very nice regional specialties that change from week to week. Well worth the short cab ride.
I've never really liked the Gaslamp at all. Too touristy, too crowded, too hip, too boring in a "center of the action" sort of way, plus it seems like if a cab driver loses control and mows down pedestrians, or a Charger player gets in a fight or gets shot at, it's in that area. But maybe my huge and ever-growing animus against the dumbed down "trendy" urban types - who are the backbone of all that ails CA and America, politically speaking - just makes me dislike such areas. As a foodie and one-time night-owl, it's an ironic evolution to now despise such areas and their primary clientele.

He created a new character, an immortal of the Highlander mythos, who tied it all together by knowing the oldest character back when he was human and a high ranking Roman, going all the way through history running into everybody at some point and in the present bringing them all in contact with each other.
It was a great bit of self-indulgence that would have been a workable screenplay if the complications of such a crossover could be worked out. CSI and Without A Trace can do crossovers because they're both Jerry Bruckheimer shows. But a crossover involving at least five different property owners would be a tough one.

I agree that moving the capital regularly would have a salutary effect on the permanent bureaucracy.....but would argue that every term of Congress should meet in a different locale, chosen by lot from military bases. One session could be Amchitka; the next Pearl Harbor; the next Vandenberg; the next Thule....they could even go to Guam or Mannheim, Germany.

No ownership problems for Aliens and Predators, obviously. They had a Xenomorph head trophy in the ship in the second Predator movie.
The problem is getting them to use a story that is worth a damn. The rule seems to be, if a story is tailor made for adaptation to the screen, alter it to the point of ruining it or just ignore its existence. The movie of Wanted pretty much destroyed the plot of the source material by making the assassins think they were serving a higher cause for the betterment of the world. In the comic they were the bad guy who'd secretly taken charge of everything after killing off all the superheros, and they knew it. They were completely clear on what they were and why.
So all of these assassins had been serving a false cause and thus had to die for their sins. Not just because they were competition for the lead character and his secretly still alive father. (It also kind of annoyed me that they greatly altered the female lead just so they could cast Angelina Jolie.)
The corollary is that if there is a fan favorite storyline that is far too lengthy and convoluted for a movie, go ahead and do that.

January 1984 appears to be the one everybody is missing. Except for that I've got a complete set through the end of 1985. I have four from 1986 and after that nobody appears to have done the scanning work. Though a lot of the material I'm looking to recover does exist in places like Lexis and various university online collections.
I have a Fujitsu ScanSnap that is pretty well suited to the task but it requires sacrificial copies to have their spines removed so the pages can be scanned. Unless you have one of the rigs designed to deal with curvature of the spine in the print sense of the phrase, it's almost impossible to ge t a good scan from the intact magazines. If you'd care to part with those copies for the cause of making them into PDFs for everyone... eric at pobirs dot com (Yes, I've got firstname@lastname for my email. One of the few benefits of having such a rare name.)
While it would be nice to have more of the issues scanned, I'd settle for just the text of the Chaos Manor columns for this project. I can't help wondering why that issue is so elusive.

Thanks. It had an Asha'man vs. Jedi Knight scene where they are being chased through the Jedi Temple, using gateways to keep ahead of their pursuers. Lots of fireballs and flying debris and flaming swords vs. lightsabers. Fun times.

When you look at computer mags from the early ages ('79-'00), there was a lot of specific knowledge that wasn't available any other way. But it was also during a time when transitory media just exploded. Case in point: no theater print from the original Star Wars exists -- they had to recreate it (leaving the door open for Lucas' insanity and ego to have free rein).....they figured that they had made so many, nobody had to keep one -- and they were all destroyed.
So I've got stuff in my garage that I'd feel bad about discarding because it might be the only copy left.....but hate to keep 'cause it's a pain. I was a long-term BYTE subscriber from way back -- getting my hands on a pdf archive would be great, but contributing to missing segments of that archive would be even better.
Of course, there is the shadow of satori, where every bit of knowledge I've ever known, every maya, is cast onto the internet to live forever without the burden of self. Heh.

Cool. I have a couple of stories that I need to keep working on. One involves two men trying to escape a city in the midst of being sacked. Another is about a knight who is sent on a holy mission of revenge, but discovers that it conflicts with his oath to seek atonement for actions he took years before.

I found a torrent with the complete US Heavy Metal magazine, so I could finally let those go. And I have a DVD of the entire National Lampoon run that Circuit City sold me for $5 when they went under.
And of course I long since got rid of most of my comics. Now I have about 7 TB of scans, most burned in series sets to DVD in no particular order. It might be easier to redownload something than find the disc its on.
I've winnowed a lot of stuff down to things of special value. Playboys signed by the centerfold model. Publications in which I was mentioned by name or was a contributor. Stuff like that.

The period where the archive peters out is also when the mag was at its thickest. They had to go searching for more content to justify all the advertising demand. One of those PDFs is a massive 780 MB for the issue in November 1983 that ran 720 pages.
They got thinner as personal computing became more mainstream and the last ten years weren't phone book of the month club anymore.
The end came rather abruptly. I was in Atlanta for E3 and had been in my hotel room barely half an hour when I checked my email and discovered I was now on an unpaid vacation. The announcement of the Sega Dreamcast alone should have paid for the trip, as it had an interesting angle with the WinCE support.

Tonight's thread was kind of funny with all the snake talk.
The city-brain protects the city with "Guardian Snakes" i.e. poisonous snakes which patrol the city for intruders. Phillippe though, remembers his 'red on black, poison lack' and realizes that he needs to take the door guarded by the non-poisonous snake.
But ... apply seat of pants to seat of chair ... and write, edit, and write some more ...
