— Maetenloch
Due to unforeseen circumstances tonight's ONT will be teh suck minimal. So instead we're having a movie night.
Tonight's feature presentation is Idiocracy - a under-rated 2006 movie from Mike Judge that's a moron favorite. While it's labeled a comedy, it's more accurately described as a comedic pre-documentary of our coming future.
Private Joe Bauers, the definition of "average American", is selected by the Pentagon to be the guinea pig for a top-secret hibernation program. Forgotten, he awakes 500 years in the future. He discovers a society so incredibly dumbed-down that he's easily the most intelligent person alive.
So What Does It Feel Like To Be Stupid?
I had an arterial problem for a couple of years, which reduced blood supply to my heart and brain and depleted B vitamins from my nerves (to keep the heart in good repair). Although there is some vagueness as to the mechanisms, this made me forgetful, slow, and easily overwhelmed. In short, I felt like I was stupid compared to what I was used to, and I was.It was frightening at first because I knew something wasn't right but didn't know what, and very worrying for my career because I was simply not very good any more.
However, once I got used to it and resigned myself, it was great. Even though I knew I had a worrying illness, I was happy as a pig in mud.
And there's more of that retarded fag talk from this moron.
The Yahoo AoSHQ group. You know the way.
Braaak.Tonight's post brought to you by BRAWNDO - cuz its like got electrolites and shit:

If intelligence is heritable it is only very weakly so. But one can trace the continual weakening of ideology, partially due to liberalism, partially due to the collapse of many independent communities competing with each other into ever fewer all led by the same technocratic elites.
So if people who are nominally stupid are the ones having kids and the brainiacs are not, the issue is not that every generation is being genetically weakened, but instead that each generation is being raised into a less efficient and dumbed down society that will not allow competition to determine what works and what doesn't.
Consider - take 100 people on welfare who are given initial resources and nothing more from the outside beyond what they can bargain for in a fair market, versus 100 individuals with advanced degrees put into a commune with unlimited resources from the federal teat.
If you come back in 100 years which society will be innovating? Which society will have actually accomplished something of worth to mankind as a whole?

He let slip last night that the older one things everything O does is great and that hes the best leader we ever had. I suspect there will be quite a few afternoons spent out back beating on metal.

Cheri I find myself speaking in public quite a bit, and I question myself and my performances frequently. The most important thing I've found in public speaking is to believe completely in the message you're there to convey, and speak from your heart. And if I screw something up, the ability to laugh at myself and start over goes a long way to winning over the audience in spite of my jackassery.
If you believe in your message the audience will realize that. Good luck!!!...and if all else fails, picture them naked!!!

First of all, the greeks had a word for a government by the worst citizens, it's called "kakistocracy." Since they invented just about every other word we use for types of government, let's go with that. It even has juvenile implications if you like that. "Caca."
Secondly, the prefix "idio" means "ones own," or "private," it's not short for "idiot." So an "idiocracy" is one's own, personal government.
Thirdly, our problem is not stupid politicians, as much as we like to say the phrase, it's *corrupt* politicians, *dishonest* politicians, and politicians with sick, twisted ideologies.
So, basically, with one made up word, Luke Wilson pretty much got *every* fucking thing wrong, and now I keep hearing that idiot word everywhere because most people are just parrots with clothes and cars. It's like fingernails on a chalkboard.
The movie is just a ripoff of "The Marching Morons" by Cyril Kornbluth, anyway.

Each Maiden era has it's unique qualities. Hell, I'm even one of the few that loves the Blaze Bailey era. X-Factor? Love it.

Speaking of Idiocracy, the idiot light on my Honda is intermittently turning on. It's only when I first start the car after a cool night, and it signals that the VTEC sensor is unhappy.....which isn't supposed to happen until over 4000 rpm. It turns on around 2500.
Problem is, once the car is turned off, it's done for the day. So I can drive it to the garage, point at it and complain, but when they turn it off and hook it up to instruments, it won't recur. So I'm leaving it overnight.

So What Does It Feel Like To Be Stupid?
Ask Willard Romney, the dumbfuck who's running another McCain campaign.
So Preznit Obama attacks the Supreme Court as “an unelected group of people.” Willard lamely replied by calling the president’s comments a “curious turn of events.”
Will fuckstick Mittens grow the balls to call Obama out on all of his czars being an "unelected group of people”?
No, and no.
He lacks the brains and the balls to do it, and all he'll say is what his pussy ass McCain type advisers tell him to say.
"The economy is improving" Romney is gonna let Obama beat him like a rented mule, just like McCain did. If you liked the way the GOP candidate took on Obama in 2008, you're gonna love the 2012 campaign.

Yeah, he's got the error code. It's just that you need to move the sensor to see if the condition signified by the error code is actually in effect.....and you have to turn the car off to move the sensor. So you get "sensor says that something's wrong in bay 3"; "really? Let's open bay 3 and see if it really is." *opens* "We've opened bay 3 and there's nothing wrong." "That's right, sensors show nothing wrong."

Tell him to make you a few hooks that can screw into the wall - flatten one end and use a punch to make a hole in it while it is still hot. I know it's over. And for the people who haven't heard me say it before, Santorum is dead to me. The dumbass took McCain's proposition that we should get involved in Syria just like we did in Libya seriously.
That sealed it for me.
Besides, I never was a big Santorum fanboy. I defended him calling G. Terry Madonna a Democrat hack because at least he showed some balls. But he was already dead to me by then.
You can even look back to when Santorum became the latest "anybody but Romney". I said at the time just wait for Santorum to implode.
All I want to do is push Romney to the right and get him to run a truly aggressive campaign against Obama. Is that so bad?
I cannot stand by and keep my mouth shut while watching another 2008 style campaign by the GOP nominee unfold.
To everybody who dislikes me because of what I stated in the two paragraphs above, I ask: WTF is so objectionable about what I'm trying to do?

That's like saying that building a house is "measure, cut, nail, repeat." It leaves out a huge amount if technical details and technique that needs to be learned. For example, temperature plays a huge role, AFAIK, since you need certain temps to get certain results, and treating the final product so it has the right properties and doesn't simply shatter when it's put under strain.

Just be sure you know how to obtain fuel! I am getting ready to make my first batch of charcoal for smithing as soon as the weather and schedule permits. I am too poor to buy to buy lump charcoal, but it turns out that all that mountain pine in my backyard that that is so useless for heating the house in winter makes ideal charcoal for forging. When life gives you dead pine trees...

Worse, Idiocracy was primarily an exercise in snobbery. It was Mike Judge saying, what if the people in NASCAR country were the norm? This is a guy whose parents raised him in small town Texas and grew up resenting it. He is very aware of the contradiction in his work, as shown in any number of 'King of the Hill' stories.
In the movie supposedly everyone is a moron by our standards but most things appear on par with America as we know in terms of the TV broadcasts working, cars still run meaning fuel is being delivered. Apparently it wasn't just Luke Wilson who was in stasis. It was the entire continent except for the people. Because it isn't about the future, it's about right now.
I don't find any entertainment in 99% of NASCAR. I regard watching professional sports as slow torture. But I know better than to assume those who do like these things are idiots. Just as I also know not to assume those whose entertainment choices are aligned with my own are especially bright.

The idea was that both she and Luke Wilson were underachievers in 2005 but seemed exceptionally bright centuries hence. Kind of like John Carter being a superman in the conditions of Barsoom.

Hes a good farrier, a good rider, and his knives are really nice. I think this was Grim's Inspiration. A different friend of mine was the one who offered to help him out, however. Hes from Montana and is a little bit cooler person, if you know what i mean.

For those worried about an EMP threat. The Soviets and the Chinese would need to pull that one off. Its above my pay grade, but a pay(wall) site I go to has explained it, for which I'll paste a little bit below:
The Mullahs are trying to build an atomic fission bomb (atoms splitting apart, like Little Boy/Fat Man at Hiroshima/Nagasaki) of between 15 to 30 kilotons - 50 to 100 times smaller than Starfish Prime which knocked out the street lights on Kalakaua Avenue for a few hours. All an Iran EMP attack would do to us is really tick us off.
The potential threat is not from IranÂ’s small atomic bombs but from a volley of ChinaÂ’s multi-megaton hydrogen bombs (up to 20 times as powerful as Starfish Prime, 1,000 times more than what Iran and North Korea are trying to make). This could be capable of causing a cascade of EMPs capable of serious damage to, say, the big transformers for interstate power lines which act like long antennas for an EMP. These need bigger and better circuit breakers and lightning arrestors.
EMP threat of a full-on nuclear war with China in the distant future - not an immediate Iran or terrorist EMP threat, for there is no such thing.

He likely could have the death penalty reduced to life imprisonment.
Then it would turn into a Reuben 'Hurricane' Carter situation. As one man put it, if Bob Dylan writes a song in your defense you almost certainly guilty. The only reason Carter won that last court case is the he was due to be released in less than two years and the New Jersey (IIRC) decided it had better things to do with several hundred thousand dollars in court expense than try to keep for the short time remaining. Despite the depiction in that Denzel Washington movie, which nastily smeared many of those involved in the investigation and prosecution, the real life case was pretty solid.
Mumia has nothing else going on. He'd keep fighting the case forever until everyone on the other side was dead or exhausted. Then, if he gets out, it'll be trumpeted as a great vindication.
He committed murder in front of numerous witnesses. He should have been executed a long, long time ago. Instead he has cost the taxpayers millions in court costs.

Wow, getting a little heated in here. Over the movie Idiocracy? I actually really like the movie. I don't think it's eugenics propaganda like some have said, nor do I think it's a slam on "NASCAR" culture as somebody else said.
I think it's a well done slam on our society at large and where we're headed. We had 52% of the people vote for Obama last time, and he'll probably get damn near 50% of the vote next time. One of our top rated shows involves washed up celebrities dancing and I bet most people on this thread know who Snooki is.
I agree with whoever said earlier that Judge is probably a libertarian or even leans conservative. He also had a short lived show on ABC I think that was a complete slam on everything liberal.

I suspect Iran is betting against the Samson Option. If they can manage a decapitation strike on Israel while a militarily weak President is in office, they figured there will be no nuclear counterstrike and the expense of a conventional attack will be unacceptably high. So the world will just stand around looking very cross at them while they take control of a new Caliphate of sorts.
This depends on Israel not automatically nuking every major Islamic capital within 800 miles of them if a nuke goes off within their borders. Of course, if an outside player that had no favored side in that part of the world but was solely interested in resources, were to nuke Tel Aviv and make it look like it was Iran's doing....

IDIOCRACY is a movie that caters to whom? What age group does it resonate with ? What gender ?
What family members ? Moms ? Dads? Oldest children ? Middle Children ?
Alls I can tell you is this. I did not know how to tie my shoes until the age of 7 ( I still carry that shame with me 50 years later )
I can remember things back to the age of 4. I can remember certain glimpes of being in the crib, but I was ( and still am ) an idiot by most social standards.
I wanted to be an astronomer or a physicist or a mathematician when I was in fourth grade back in 1964 and I got straight a's all through catholic grade school ( the one with the NUNS ) Except in handwriting. Altar boy too yes, and choir and boy scout, but always on the fringes, always mostly an outcast, still am and do not freakin care a bit.
I quit high school, I went back and quit again. I got a ged through some poor people's program, was offered college help, but was so far down in the economic and other spectrums that it did not happen.
One day after drinking a 6 pack at the age of 24 i decided I wanted to know what smart people are up to, so I got on the highway drove 15 miles and took a test for mensa. I did not qualify for them, I qualified for the next higher group, and I said yay I belong to something. Then I quit that too, they still send me letters.
Now I work on computers in your town, my fingers go so fast in dos or where ever keyboard shortcuts work that is still pisses 19 yr olds off. Even mouse jockeying cannot be followed by the people who's computers I remote into to fix them.
In between I have taken courses, worked on electrical equipment, railroads, hydraulic equipment, trucks, cars, managed small businesses for working class owner but I am like Jack Nicholson in Ironweed, I refuse to give up the valurite and I refuce to be judged.
Back to the main point, Memory is the root of all intelligence, I work with very smart people every day that can not remember DICK. I am always the low person on the totem, hell I am UNDER the totem, but I am the one they run to to tell them what to do, where something is at, what is the procedure, who do we go to. It is all memory.
I think Elephants shouldbe the MOST PROTECTED SPECIE on EARTH, besides humans
Carry on and have a beer

Good new anvils are hideously expensive, but most hobbyists either get them used or (more commonly, I believe) make an improvised one. Given that the London-pattern anvil that we are most familiar with is a pretty recent invention and that for most of history an anvil was a square or rectangular chunk of metal of fairly small size, a useful anvil is a lot easier to find than you might think.

One day Mr. Smith, the president of a large corporation, called his vice-president, Dave, into his office and said, "We're making some cutbacks, so either Jack or Barbara will have to be laid off." Dave looked at Mr. Smith and said, "Barbara is my best worker, but Jack has a wife and three kids. I don't know whom to fire."
The next morning Dave waited for his employees to arrive. Barbara was the first to come in, so Dave said, "Barbara, I've got a problem. You see, I've got to lay you or Jack off and I don't know what to do?" Barbara replied, "You'd better jack off. I've got a headache."

You're doing this to relay information, so do just that. Most people fail at that because they think what they're doing is giving a performance. Put that out of your head and just pass on what you know to them. When you think of it those terms there really isn't any need to be anxious about it.

Endings are hard. I've lost count of the number of great books and movies that left me disappointed because they didn't know what to do at the end. Some people have been very annoyed at Neal Stephenson because he was in the habit for a long time of not having an ending, just a fade out without much resolution of major threads.
One huge annoying item in a lot of anime series is hitting the cosmic rest button instead of an ending.

Can't get upset too bad, the euphoria from the series of face plants by the left with the probability of a major victory later on is too strong. Stop and think about the events that have transpired, and what is yet to come. Things WILL get better despite the struggle we will endure.

Compared to the rest of life on Earth, humans have incomprehensibly advanced intellects. Even a sub-normal human is orders of magnitude beyond any animal. The girl with Down Syndrome who bags groceries at the supermarket is intelligent in ways that the smartest chimp or dolphin simply cannot even comprehend. She can use money. She can read. She can use money to buy a bus ticket and travel to another town. That is simply impossible for a chimp. Compared to any non-human animal, that girl with Down Syndrome is a giant-headed Star Trek superintellect.
...which means that there really isn't much distance between her and, say, a real-world superintellect like Freeman Dyson. He can do stuff she can't -- but he can't do anything that she can't imagine the possibility of. He could explain some of his work to her, but he could never explain it to a chimp. He's a Star Trek superintellect with a marginally bigger rubber head than hers.
IQ tests should use a much larger scale. Instead of having "normal" be IQ 90 to 110, it should be something like IQ 999,990 to 1,000,010 to give a better sense of how little the difference actually is.
I used to be a lot more elitist, back when I was a skinny highschooler with no girlfriend and good SAT scores. Unfortunately, far too many skinny highschoolers with no girlfriends and high SAT scores go into government.

Y'all Morons need to plan better. If you love her in to a comatose state, you can hardly expect her to make sammitches afterwards. She should do so before hand. Maybe pack a cooler to keep by the side of the bed so you don't have to walk far or anything.

There's a lot to learn to be a blacksmith, starting with learning how hot the iron should be for whatever you're trying to do with it. You can basically tell by the color, usually shades from red to cherry.
There's a "feel", however, you have to develop to work metal whether it is hot or cold. You don't just bang on it -- that just spreads it around. To draw metal towards you, you have to pull the hammer towards you as you strike. And you have to know where to strike and how hard to strike with each successive blow to smoothly draw metal.
I'd love to try blacksmithing. I know someone who bought a furnace and never got around to using it. Unfortunately, right now I'm too poor to build a shed for it and buy the most basic tools. You can make most of your tools you need yourself but you have to buy some of them.
I know, however, I could learn to do it and I'm sure I'd enjoy it. Someday, perhaps, I will. If I was sure I could earn money doing it I'd find a way to pay for it. If I can get the guy I know who has the furnace to give it to me or let me borrow it this summer I'll do some reading, watch some videos, buy some stock and try it. I hope I can muster the effort needed.

Glad to get back to blacksmithing here. Pecos, if you like car spring swords but find them too soft, try to find some discarded Studebaker spring leaves. Deeper heat-treat, harder arrn.
I'm anvil-rich, and have my "vices" too. But it makes you think twice about survival strategies, since extensive collections of heavy tools don't lend themselves to the teotwawki-bag rapid departure concept. My bug-out vehicle is a one-ton, but imagine the planning rig you need to load everything from shop to cargo-box in, say, 45 minutes. Hmm.
One great tool you can make for yourself is a Tennessee forge. It's a conical hole in the ground, best if lined with arrn or firebrick, with a large buried pipe to introduce air at the bottom. With a leaf blower, you can get decent firewood hot enough to soften iron and steel for working. A manual bellows and charcoal yields ore-smelting heat.
Strongly agree that knowing how to bake charcoal is a vital skill. My grandfather made a damn good living 100 years ago cutting New England hardwood for charcoal in the Gun Valley shops. They used it for bronze alloys. To make hard iron or steel the old way, you need to stack charcoal and ore together. That's how you introduce carbon to the mix.
The beauty part is, the hole-forge makes a great cooking platform for a dutch oven, too. I can bake a chicken on just sticks with no heat loss, and I can use real coal for an all-day fire to make apple butter or ketchup. Stupid waste of a day at Heinz' prices, but if the world goes to hell, I will have apple butter and ketchup. And an anvil.

I never actually knew that 'utilize' wasn't a synonym for 'use,' so I appreciate the info. Utilize is a word I try to avoid though cuz it sounds so damn pompous. That said, if I have to write a few paragraphs with 721 repetitions of the same word, it is nice to have a synonym to throw in once just to break it up. I'll have to find a replacement.

I'm fully of the opinion that officers should settle personal disputes with a pair of singlesticks and some privacy.
Yes, it's annoying that fencing is hard to find, although that seems to be changing. Most decent sized cities have a club, and most of those have adult beginner classes. It's nice as well that the historical European martial arts are starting to develop a following, as it means that there is more than Olympic fencing available.

They've re-organized the university departments since then. Some people get pretty confused about where they really stand. The most complex, dangerous, and two-sided tool you will ever use, especially if you've been convinced you're a STEM Prince, is language. You do not inherit it, you do not pick it up as you go along, and you're not going to understand its use by reading in your spare time.
Engineering used to be a five-year program. There was a reason for that. We used to think they needed a college education along with their engineering training. Many now take offense at that notion.
I've built cars, brewed up chemical compounds, and designed and built my house and some other buildings. I don't think I'm an engineer, and certainly not a scientist. Yet every engineering apprentice (and with a B.S., that is what you are) thinks he's got language, rhetoric and grammar down pat because his buds appear to understand him when he orders a round. Sooner or later, deliberate ignorance of language thinking gets you, and your project and your clients, into trouble.

I love teh burritos. I think the little guy's trying to get me to play with me EVEN MORE. he LOVES to play. Grimmy adores him but just can belive hes run into an animal that considers everything in THE WHOLE WORLD his toy. Dogs are playful but not quite in the kitten way.
But its hilarious, Grim named the kitty, and the tiny little white booger sleeps curled up between me and his dad, or in his daddys arms. The other kitteh glares at him balefully if she is on me, and he gets too close. Shes protecting her turf.
Grim was expecting Moe to be all in the way while i did the henna thing with my hair. nope. he was civilized, came over then knock out next to me, while i sat with my slime and watched the daywalkers comment on the controversies of the day. I was really out of sorts though. three hours and fourty minutes with green slime on my knee length hair was a flippin drag, but little kitty stayed the whole time and cuddled, the good little boy.

One great tool you can make for yourself is a Tennessee forge. It's a conical hole in the ground, best if lined with arrn or firebrick...

I used to be regular on a bulletin board that had a lot of STEM types and they had precisely that problem. Most of them were very liberal as well, which I don't think was a coincidence.

i have a hairless cat. She is adorable, and my darling baby. She got very depressed when he older (very aged) fuzzy sisters died this winter. She was miserable when she was alone, because shed never in her life been in the house by herself, if i left... so i got moe.
Moe is a defective hairless cat born with fur. (the breeder is a friend of mine.) But he is perfect for me. The Naked one now views him as a naughty younger brother she is willing to accept, and tolerate but not love. But shes not leaving my room again and doesnt sit by the door till i get home when i leave any more.

There are other issues at play other than snobbery. One is groupthink. Our country has a lot of worthwhile people from a wide spectrum of places that have something to offer. Yet, our government is becoming the mental version of the royal hemophiliacs because it is relying on a group of people that is too small and too closely knit-- as if they alone have all the answers and there is simply no possibility that someone else might have a better answer.
Another problem is one of complex reality. No one has ever been smart enough to actually succeed at what some of the 'elites' think they can do. Unfortunately, a percentage of those people also tend to become pretty abusive and dismissive when they are reminded of that fact, no matter how gently it is done. That generates resentment that has probably become palpable to you.
So, the backlash comes in multiple forms. Three of them are: snobs tend to draw fire, some people are just trying to combat the dangers of groupthink and they are right to do so, and some people are just trying to keep those who are over-impressed with their own intelligence from hurting the rest of society by undertaking ventures they are not capable of doing successfully. There are probably others as well.

THAT many cardiologists? So sorry to hear that. I lucked out, I guess, because the initial guy I got in the hospital called the diagnosis right away and had me on a drug regimen out of the gate that seems to have worked (took 5 months to go from an EF of 10 to 45 - still not out of the woods, but... better). They run blood/urine tests every month to monitor the kidneys. I was throwing out a lot of protein when first diagnosed, but that seems to have cleared up.
At peak "cocktail" here's what I was taking: Carvedilol 50mg; Spironolact 25mg; Furosemide 80mg; as well as Lisinopril (slightly high BP pre-condition) and a statin (they seem to prescribe this to anyone who walks in with heart problems now) and a baby aspirin.
Best of luck to you. I hope the new guy stabilizes things and you start feeling better.

Speaking of logic versus deconstruction... I learned deconstruction. or as they call it, Marxist reasoning throughout my college career. But I was already strong at logic and I took two logic course, and I feel like learning both made me a better thinker. Specifically, a better advocate for those things which I believe. I can deconstruct that which is deconstructible, I can compare it to that which isn't, and I know what I know and why I "know" it.
Don't discount deconstruction as an alternate way of understanding things. Just don't take it to be complete and self-sufficient. In fact, understanding Marxist thought processes makes it easier for me to talk about things with academics, political types, and liberals. I think it makes it easier for me to explain what I believe and to persuade them that we conservatives aren't crazy or evil.

You could "press" them, of course. Or, East Coast, "send them out."
I can't transliterate what I think is the right way to say iron, because I haven't installed "schwa" in my symbol toolkit. But it kinda, sorta, rhymes with "I earn." Over the years, I have been surprised by the variant forms.
And oh yeah, of the actual metal too. There are high-carbon irons (the plural, that's a tricky one) that make a decent knife blade, holding an edge well, and not brittle. In compression, iron is often superior to steel for weight-bearing. Some wrought iron is almost rustproof. And cast has amazing thermal properties. It's the very stuff, and we've lost our sense of wonder at how we used it to change the world.

My guess is I would not argue your point. Groupthink is dangerous and it takes a truly accurate mirror to avoid those dangers.
One distinction I would make however, is that I was being specific about 'elites in government.' For example, how many current members of the SCOTUS are not from Harvard or Yale? Out of the last 4 Prez's, how many did not go to Harvard or Yale?
To me, the worst part is when they start congratulating themselves on how diverse they are.

OTOH, a lot of the stuff civilians were asked to put up with during WWII was a fraud intended to increased feelings of participation in the war effort. Much of the items that were rationed were never remotely in short supply. A consideration that helped inspired the Marshall Plan was that it would be insanely expensive to ship back the massive amount of non-battlefield stuff we'd shipped overseas to support our troops. It was cheaper to leave it there as a contribution to the rebuilding.
It might have been a good reason to cut entitlements but in general, without a real existential threat requiring factory conversion or new factories entirely, there wasn't any good reason to take a dump on the economy paying for all of this. When WWII began, Roosevelt had already spent most of two terms doing that.

I had to deal, some time ago, with hidebound high-school-educated bureaucrats who owed their jobs to The Party, and distrusted anyone with more education than they had, paying no attention to major or school. Fun times, as we like to say here. There are plenty of those still around.
That backlash is not quite the same as the new one against what I'll call "what higher education has become." Some common ground, but still. Many people feel that the entire education hierarchy has been transformed into a weapon aimed at their way of life. I understand.
In between, there was a backlash against old-boyism, even though many of my high school fellow prisoners went to Big State because they said, cynically I thought, that they could make better connections there. Some did.
And there was a backlash (not nearly enough) against turning higher education into a training ground for what Horace Mann called "agents of the State." That's how two-year normal schools became universities.
I get a little backlashy (sorry) on this trade-school thing, even though in My Republic you wouldn't earn a degree without demonstrating either a marketable skill or current employment, besides expertise in your field.
I had a Yalie for a Shakespeare class at a state school. He did a very good job of sharing the insights he had absorbed there, and that was it. Hard grader, too. He left the PhD program to sell insurance.
But I also met a philosophy professor fresh from a Harvard post-doc, who studied with Nozick under Rawls. He mentored, more or less, the last two years of my education. We became very close friends and I reckon him the best thinker I've ever known. As I said, there you go.

It doesn't take a history to acquire an attitude. People invent themselves every day. Some of the worst I've ever met came from the humblest of beginnings and looked upon that with shame rather than pride of accomplishment. (OTOH, some can remind you so often of their started from nothing staus it becomes parody ala The Four Yorkshiremen: www.youtube.com/watch?v=qlIXn0r0AY8 )
A big part of comes from wanting to impress those who do care about what your predecessor did rather than what you've done or might do. We had a war to be rid of the idea of hereditary royalty but it crept back in. It is an essential flaw in the human makeup.

Odumbcluck is completely innumerate. I challenge anyone to come up with any evidence to the contrary. I have looked and come up empty every time. I think one of the reasons why trillion dollar deficits don't bother him is he has absolutely no idea what the difference between million, billion, and trillion really mean.
He is so innumerate that the concept of runaway compounding is just as foreign to him as the most complex math would be to most folks.

The thing to look for are the exclusives to the machine. Nearly all of the big hits from last several years are there but the exclusives are what defines a platform. (And some items, like the Orange Box, were handed to teams that didn't have good PS3 skills and produced an inferior version.)
God of War series.
Resistance series
Uncharted series.
Ratchet & Clank series.
Also, some prominent PS2 exclusives have been gathered in remastered PS3 versions in high def.
Jak and Daxter series
Devil May Cry series
Sly Cooper series
Prince of Persia series (the good early ones before the awful movie tie-ins, not PS3 exclusive but a good item if you didn't play them on an earlier system)
And several more on the way.
You can make a similar list for other systems. On Xbox the Halo series is a big draw, plus access to most of the original Xbox library, which can be had for cheap.

Not recently, but I did acquire a 55 GB complete set of DVD rips and a 600 MB collection of the comics, which are better than most tie-ins due to participation form the show creators.
On Monday I loaded those, all of Lexx, several of the Doctors, and a bunch of other stuff on a little 500 GB and sent it to my brother. He's paranoid about using torrents and it was painful to try uploading the stuff a file at a time.

3D Dot Heroes (zelda made with voxels)
Afrika (photographer in Afrika, think along the lines of Pokemon Snap)
Bladestorm (Medieval times RTS)
Castlevania Lords of Shadows (a 3D Castlevania that is actually good)
Demon Souls and Dark Souls (hardcore third person RPG)
Disgaea 3 (grid based tactile strategy rpg)
Dynasty Warriors 7 (button masher)
Hot Shots (three click golf game)
Heavy Rain (new style of the old classic point and click. falls apart in the last chapter)
ICO & Shadow of the Colossus (they went back and made these classics in HD with finally not much slowdown in Shadow)
Infamous (open world spuerhero game with a shit story, quite fun though)
Nier (have to like JRPGs but one of the finest of the gen)
Sengoku Bassara (Capcom's take on Dynasty Warriors and frankly a bit more fun with the anime story)
The Darkness (great storydriven FPS)
Uncharted games (Tomb Raider but good)
Valkyrie Chronicles (must play if you like tactical strategy games with a great watercolor aesthetic and good story)
Vanquish (Japan doing a balls out Gears of War game but it's short and makes no sense)
Way of the Samurai 3 (third person action game...kinda. Everything is realtime and a shit load of paths to go down so it has high replay ability. Can be boring at times though)
Yakuza games (3D beat em up with a lot of similar stuff of Shenmue)
and then there are a bunch of stuff on the PSN

Haven't played, just going by reputation. They're part of my immense unplayed backlog of games that will be my full time occupation when I win the lottery. I got the third game as part of a bundle with the Move three-piece setup and the gun accessory when Best Buy had it down to $50 for the whole thing.
I've made a move that should help with the backlog. I got a 3DS in a nice deal and eight games for it. That will make things better, I'm sure.

Not in the budget and such things tend to be noisier than I can stand anymore. I haven't bothered with E3 in years, even though I live in LA and flew to Atlanta for the two years it was there.
I was working on CES related stuff for ten days in January and never went on the show floor. Felt like I'd seen everything that mattered already online. That would have been blasphemy ten year earlier but I'm burned out on trade show. I just want to do the job and go home.

I've got ME 1 and 2 on the Xbox and have never so much as inserted the disc. I'm reluctant to take count but the backlog is in the three digits, possibly four.
A mitigating factor is that I'm also an obsessive bargain hunter. I like to say I was a Cheap Ass Gamer long before cheapassgamer.com existed.
Of those 3DS games, five were $10 each, one was $14 but was bundled with hardshell I wanted, and the other three were full price (Mario, Zelda, Starfox) but purchased in a Buy 2 Get 1 Free deal. Plus this was at Best Buy so I got Reward Zone points and used my Toys R Us credit card to get points on that, too.
I used to do a good profit on flipping stuff from blowout sales but it's too much of a hassle these days. Back when Sega pulled the plug on the Saturn, Best Buy marked everything down to $9.50 or less. I drove all other to buy about $2700 worth of it. The I converted that to $7000 by offering to the small stores that knew how to move it.
Those were the days.

Still got those and pretty much the whole Saturn US library with the exception of most sport titles like Madden. (The biggest per unit money maker in the aforementioned blowout at $25 per.) Likewise for Dreamcast, PS1, PS2, Xbox, GameCube, Lynx, Game Gear (another big money maker for me upon a time) GBA, and more recent stuff.
I sold off a bunch of older stuff last year. Sega Genesis with CD and 32x, SNES, N64, and 3DO. Freed up a few cubic yards of storage space. The first three can be reduced to a few DVDs and emulated. Almost everything worth having on 3DO is also on the PS1 and Saturn, or PC.
I might have sold the Saturn group if there were a decent emulator. I've got the ISOs but the only good emulator got bought by Sega to sell Saturn games on PC in Japan and they've never released the final version. It's a much more difficult emulation target than most and nobody has managed it yet.
I'm at a loss as to why Panzer Dragoon Saga was never ported elsewhere. An HD remake should do some decent business on the current machines.

The blowjob has fallen on hard times. Or, to put it in the form of a crude question, who can really get it up for fellatio these days? Back in the 1960s and '70s, fellatio was all the rage. Its curative powers are powerfully conveyed by the moment in John Updike's Bech when the protagonist's mistress tries "to bring his weakling member to strength by wrapping it in the velvet bandages of her lips." Abandoning the protective modesty of fiction in the poem "Fellatio," Updike celebrated the way "that each of these clean secretaries / at night, to please her lover, takes / a fountain into her mouth."
When I first came across these lines, in 1972, aged fourteen, they seemed excitingly rude — if a little yucky. Now, a harmless poem can't be expected to support a zeitgeisty theory, but something, evidently, was in the air: 1972 was the year of Deep Throat, about a woman with a clitoris in her throat, so that she achieves orgasm by performing oral sex. In retrospect, this seems like a premise dreamed up by feminists as a way of showing, in ludicrously exaggerated fashion, the underlying misogyny of male fantasies. Or maybe not so exaggerated after all. At roughly the same time, a joke made the rounds about the ideal woman being three feet tall with a flat head — so you'd have someplace to rest your beer while she gave you head. One way or another, the early '70s were a time when the culture was bigging up the blowjob. Tellingly, Bech's mistress was "following less her own instincts than the exemplary drift of certain contemporary novels."
Some of this enthusiasm lived on into the late twentieth century. In 1995's To Die For, Nicole Kidman reacts with disingenuous astonishment to the story of how a famous broadcaster got her big break because a self-penned reference commended her ability to "suck your cock till your eyes pop out!" (Shouldn't that read "cave in" or "implode"?) In the same year, there's a fun exchange in Martin Amis's The Information in which a male character proposes to a lady friend that they "do 68." What's that? she asks. "You do me and I owe you 1," he shoots back. Later in the novel, the humiliation of failed writer Richard Tull is complete when his wife fellates his rival, the successful Gwyn Barry.
If this all seems rather quaint, then Susan Minot's 2002 novella, Rapture — about a single blowjob — was perhaps a last, jaw-aching hurrah. A genuinely twenty-first-century spokesman can be found in Jonathan Franzen's Freedom, in the form of young Joey Berglund, whose sexual maturity — compared with the guys he's at college with — is conveyed simply and vehemently. Their yearnings center on the blowjob, which Joey considers "little more than a glorified jerkoff."
I recently undertook a small survey of some more mature male friends, and the results, while not unanimous, were overwhelming. To speak plainly, given the choice, eight of the ten men surveyed preferred eating pussy to having their dicks sucked. Or, to put it in entirely numerical terms, 80 percent of males would opt for a 70 rather than a 68. And what about the other two men? Yes, you guessed it: They're gay! To be strictly accurate, the heterosexual respondents were partial to this kind of thing — but only in the mathematically blissful reciprocity of 70 minus 1. The gob-job continues to thrive in hetero pornography, of course, for the simple — literally obvious — reason that it lends itself to being filmed in a way that cunnilingus cannot.
I'm not claiming that the latter did not exist back in the 1970s, but it was regarded in much the same way as paying for a round at the bar: You had to do it, but if you could avoid it, you did. It would be a mistake, though, to see this change as meaning that men have gone from being selfish recipients to selfless givers of pleasure; it's just that what constitutes pleasure has shifted. As the Michael Fassbender character in Shame says to a woman he's seducing in a bar by telling her how badly he wants to go down on her (before getting beaten up by her boyfriend): "That's what I like to do."
The scale of the sea change can be observed at the Great Canadian Beaver-Eating Contest, at Burning Man, an event so popular that participants line up as if for a half-off sale. In the more discreet context of my survey, this enthusiasm was endorsed by the respondent who claimed that the only time he experienced "absolute contentment" was when his face was between his wife's legs. He wished to make clear that he was not talking just about sex; he meant in life generally.

The code wouldn't really be needed. At this late date you'd just want the art assets and pseudo-code logic. The Saturn was such a strange beast inside that you'd hardly gain anything trying to port the code. Besides, I've seen excellent hobbyist recreations done by people with zero access to any of the original materials except the running game itself.
I expect it had more to do with internal politics within Sega.
GameTap supposedly had the rights to make the game available on PC via emulation but didn't think there was enough audience to make it worth the cost.

About four days ago, a guy asked me to sign to get a candidate on the ballot here in MA-4. Last night, the candidate himself called me and we talked for like half an hour.
Is this a good thing or a bad thing? I think it's bad, because if the guy is getting signatures now, it may already be too late for him. Additionally, if he has 30 minutes to chat with some dude who happened to sign his petition and leave a phone number, there may not be too many people signing for him.

Anyway, I lost yesterday to some virus and woke up at 2100 blog time. I'm still up, and intend to keep being up until maybe 1700, at which point I can nap for a while, and then get up to transport kids at around 1900. And then maybe go to bed.

Nothing made me want to giggle more, though, than having an 8th grade student in a class I was substituting recently argue with me that Gatorade was good for you because "it had electrolytes."

suggest to the student that urine has electrolytes, too.

Then I saw commenters writing that half the population is dumber than the average.
