The Falklands War: 30 Years Later
It was almost exactly 30 years ago today that Argentine forces invaded the Falklands Islands leading to the Falklands War. By June Britain had defeated the Argentinian Navy and Air Force and finally retook the islands. But it was a far closer run thing than many recognized at the time. And tensions are once again rising in the South Atlantic but both countries are much weaker than they were:
Both sides today field such smaller fleets of ships and aircraft that it's hard to imagine commanders risking them in a stand-up fight. The Royal Navy escaped by the skin of its teeth in the Falklands - "six better fuses and we'd have lost," as the quip held - and neither it nor the Argentines could absorb the same losses today.
And Philip Ewing draws some lessons from war that still apply:
The fight you plan for may not be the fight you get: The Royal Navy of the early 1980s was shaped with an eye to protecting transatlantic convoys in World War III against the Soviets, not expeditionary amphibious campaigns. Among other things, this meant its air defenses were not ideal - commanders had to pair frigates and destroyers in miniature pickets to compensate for the gaps in the other ships' sensors. That also meant Argentine pilots could fly in low and score hits on the British fleet in San Carlos Water, although, luckily for the British, several of their bombs did not explode. You've got to fight with what you have: The Royal Navy got rid of its last traditional aircraft carrier in 1978, leaving it only with the "Harrier carriers" HMS Hermes and HMS Invincible when the Falklands erupted. The Hermes was very old and the Invincible was originally designed for anti-submarine warfare - and neither could field the vital airborne early warning aircraft the navy once had. So commanders had to make do with repurposed ships flying a handful of repurposed aircraft to defend the task group with very limited domain awareness. It worked, but only just.
Your losses are going to be worse than you think: ...The war cost more than 100 Argentine aircraft, according to John Roberts' history of the Royal Navy, "Safeguarding the Nation," as well as its cruiser General Belgrano, a submarine and other vessels. And a single loss can have disproportionate consequences, as with the sinking of the cargo ship Atlantic Conveyor, which carried the helicopters British troops were counting on to carry them across the Falklands. Without them, they had to walk.
Also: Why Thatcher defended Gen. Pinochet when he was arrested in London in 1999. It turns out that she was repaying a debt for his vital assistance in 1982.
Israel Considers the "Worst Case" Scenario After Attack on Iran
And the leadership believe that only a few hundred Israelis would be killed in a response:
In the event of an Iranian attack on Israel, less than 300 people would be killed during three weeks of non-stop fighting on multiple fronts, according to estimates delivered to the security cabinet in a briefing, Channel 10 reported on Monday. According to the estimates, described as a worst-case scenario, thousands of missiles would be launched toward Israel from Lebanon, Syria and Gaza as part of the Iranian attack. The scenario took into account Israel's defenses as of 2012, with the Iron Dome rocket-defense system not yet at its full deployment.
And if that seems rather cavalier, then watch this video and consider what you would do in the same circumstances. Warning: May be disturbing.
"During times of universal deceit, telling the truth becomes a revolutionary act."-- George Orwell
It's worth noting that academic studies find that tax evasion is driven largely by high tax rates. This makes sense since there is more incentive to hide money when the government is being very greedy. But there is also evidence that tax evasion rises when people perceive that government is wasting money and being corrupt.Heck, no wonder the Irish people are up in arms. They're being asked to cough up more money to finance a bailout that was both corrupt and wasteful.
"I never had an interest in being a mayor 'cause that's a real job. You have to produce. That's why I was able to be a senator for 36 years."-- Joe Biden
It was also thirty years ago that Atari declared national Pac-Man Day.
Even a little bit to the left.
After initially disqualifying Talackova, organizers of the Miss Universe beauty pageant reversed course late Monday, saying she can participate. In a statement, the Miss Universe Organization said Jenna Talackova can compete provided "she meets the legal gender recognition requirements of Canada, and the standards established by other international competitions."
The statement, however, did not elaborate on what the requirements were.

Gwar - Womb With A View
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iL9v1e-_T1g
Fiendish and crude
Froosty and lews
This is the life I have whored myself to
Spackled and battered and smothered and covered
And cleaving and cloven and bitter and blued
Your womb
Your breeding sac
Your womb is a membrane I must penetrate
Your womb is a sewer
I grunt at the grate
Your womb is a sewer
Your womb is manure
but still, I'm worse
My life is a sinkhole
Egregious and rude
Worm fested and filthy
Froosty and lewd
A womb with a view
When one becomes two
Fuck you
Never to matter the number of flies feasting the flab that bolsters your thighs
Your womb
Your breeding hive
Womb with a view
I see you
I was born
Deep in the void
Raped by millions I soon grew
Annoyed!
Could I somehow elope?
Like a molecule in a microscope
So your womb won't become the tomb of our dead baby
Never to matter the number of flies
Lapping the flab that bolsters your thighs
Womb with a view
When one becomes two
Fuck you
Your womb is a membrane I must penetrate
Your womb is a sewer
I grunt at the grate
Your womb is a sewer
Your womb is manure
But still, I'm worse

Ahh yes, 1982. I was making many trips down to Ascension Island in the Atlantic. Turns out President Reagan was helping out Mrs. Thatcher by providing all the logistical support we could. The island's runways were busy with British planes, happily topping off with all the fuel they could carry. Satellite photo updates and I imaging all the signal traffic the radios could grab.
I thought that was a nice gesture.

It's probably been two decades since I read "Red Storm Rising", but I vaguely recall a scene where Russkie missiles are homing in on an American carrier, and the Phalanxes shoot down a bunch, then, with only two remaining, the system can't decide which is the priority, so they keep resetting. I remember thinking at the time "wouldn't it just pick one"?

I long ago had it explained to me that between Russian melancholy and the sheer surreality of Soviet life, combined with access to things that go boom and copious amounts of time...a lot of things happen.
Some of the stories I've been told probably didn't happen, mostly because if they did, the person who told it to me could not possibly have survived. Others...well, I don't repeat them, often, because I am pretty sure that some of my friends have a terrible tendency to say, "That wouldn't work, let me show you...." followed by a catastrophe, and a piece of ground that is fenced off or simply still smoking.

It's been a shitty week overall. I'm car-hunting for the first time in about 7 years, which fucking sucks. I HATE car shopping. The big air compressor at the shop died a spectacular death yesterday, had to bring in the big floor fans to get the smoke out of the shop. Still smells like crap. Since I'm car-less at the moment, I'm staying on the boat (marina's close to the shop, and my normal commute is about 35 miles), which sounds more romantic than it is, because the cabin smells like diesel after replacing a couple of fuel hoses last weekend and I still haven't fixed the head so I have to walk 200 yards up to the clubhouse to take a dump. And finally, we have schools of baitfish hanging out under the docks lately, which brings in the seals, who bang the shit out of every boat in the harbor at around 3 in the morning when you're trying to sleep.

------
The emerging demographic situation developing here between Russia and China is simply catastrophic. The crisis is due to the creeping expansion of thousands of Chinese migrants. Chinese workers entering Siberia are replacing Russians who are not prepared to toil 12 hours a day for a pittance.
Chinese students are taught that Siberia is their land, stolen from China in the 19th century. It is suspected by many Russians here that China is subsidizing the migration of its citizens. Demographers predict that by 2025 Chinese will be the Russian Far East's predominant ethnic group. Then, it is feared, they will gain the right to vote and demand union with China.
Russia's military is as bad off as its health care system. Its draftee troops are mercilessly mistreated and have no morale. Its equipment old and rusted, its technology obsolete, it couldn't take on Poland much less China. Its nukes are useless as the Chinese have lots as well and would be the last men standing in an exchange.
Russia's GDP is smaller than Mexico's (766 billion vs. 768 billion - the US is 12.5 trillion). And it will get smaller as its main export, oil, becomes less competitive given high extraction costs.
The geopolitical bottom line is that there is no way Russia is going to be able to hold on to Siberia for much longer. Within 20 years or less, it's going to be Chinese Siberia.
It won't take a war. The demographics will become so overwhelming that Moscow will just give up and sell the place. Maybe not all at once. Maybe in bites.

Another fun fact about nucular weppinz: they are radioactive.
That means their warheads have half-lives. Generally short ones.
That means that the bombs they laid up in 1961 are unfit for deployment; they will have to go back in the centrifuge if they want to get any U-235, Plutonium, the rest of it. And not only that, but just getting that shit out of the rusted, radioactive shell is going to be a monumental undertaking.

Actually, the Exocet that hit the Sheffield (several days after the sinking of the ARA Belgrano) probably never exploded. It DID cut the fire main in two, and the crew was unable to put out the fires that started. She burned for several days, and sank while under tow.

Still, the president’s strategy is already working, at least at the New York Times. Right on cue, columnist Maureen Dowd savaged the court: “This court, cosseted behind white marble pillars, out of reach of TV, accountable to no one once they give the last word, is well on its way to becoming one of the most divisive in modern American history. It has squandered even the semi-illusion that it is the unbiased, honest guardian of the Constitution. It is run by hacks dressed up in black robes.”
“Impeach the Supreme Court Justices If They Overturn Health-Care Law,” wrote David Dow, a columnist for the Daily Beast. “It is the duty of the people to protect the Constitution from the court. Social progress cannot be held hostage by five unelected men.”
And there, in a nutshell, is Mr. Obama’s plan to divide and conquer. Rise up, America, against your nation’s Congress, your nation’s highest court — and even America’s Constitution.
His desperation is now palpable, and itÂ’s only April. This is going to get ugly, people.---------
Yep.

A slight silver lining on the election.
This Democrat president spends campaign cash like it was taxpayer dollars. In January, even with no big TV buys, the Obama campaign burned through 158% of what it raised (vs 60% for Bush eight years before).
Obama has spent more than $135 million — more than GOP challengers Romney and Rick Santorum combined
The core of ObamaÂ’s operation is packed into the sixth floor of ChicagoÂ’s Prudential building, where staffers sit side by side at long rows of tables, working from laptops and cellphones.
ObamaÂ’s operation had $84.7 million in cash-on-hand by Feb. 29. The Romney campaign, which is hardly hurting for cash after raising about $74.8 million, says itÂ’s not impressed.

Hey guys, I have a question.
Sometime in the last week or so, one of the cobloggers posted something with a link to a company with voter-sifting software, which they were making available at low or no cost to Tea Party groups.
Can anyone remember the name of the company or software, or better yet, remember where the link is? I can't find it.

A great book on the Falklands war is the one by Max Hasting’s. The Brits 3 Commando Brigade is an awesome if somewhat under equipped force made of Royal Marines, and the Parachute regiment laid a general ass whipping on the Argentine forces after some epic cross island Yomps. They had to walk since most of the helicopters were lost when the Atlantic Conveyor was hit by an Exocet. What a lot of folks don’t realize is that the Falkland was fought during the Southern winter in generally atrocious conditions. The Royal Marines 42 and 45 Commando were specialists back then and even today in artic warfare as they then were part of the UK//NL landing force that used to winter exercise in Norway every year. My good friend Gary was a Royal Marine Mountain Leader as a Corporal with 42 during the war. The ML”s are the true artic warfare specialist and help train the rest of the troops.

Let me start off with the Miss Universe contest letting the dude with his dick chopped off and fake tits into the contest is bullshit and another turd down the toilet of reality.
My wife and I went to the drive in with my daughter and 4 grand kids, two from hers and two from my son's family. We saw an animated show called The Lorax. It was a Dr. Seuss skree on evil corporations cutting down all the trees. The was even a sign in the background, at one point, that read, "Too Big To Fail". This is obviously a part of the brainwashing of our youth for the 7 year old demographic. Now we move to the 23 to twenty year olds with another piece of crap "The Hunger Games". I never read the book but my 13 year old grand daughter did. The message of an evil government pitting groups against each other was completely lost on her. She was more interested in the love story. I am willing to bet if there is a sequel it will make the evil government an arm of conservatives. Three hours of my life I will never get back.

it happens, but not usually. its very weird to see a grass eater determinedly eat meat, and steadfastly refuse to be dissuaded from this peculiar diet choice. I was told it was because she was nearly feral and had lost so much blood her instinct for iron and protein kicked in, and nature told her "If you want to live eat this now!"

It's already had one of the biggest opening weeks in film history, so the fix is in.
But it is far from an Obama voter's dream. The government engage in elaborate population control method rather than have anything like a prosperity driving meritocracy. The heroine ultimately seeks to overthrow it.
Not exactly something Baen might publish but could be usefully subversive if the teens who'll be first time voters this November connect the dots.

I agree with you completely. But I also think he is a truly stupid man. So, I will not be surprised by any number of ridiculous miscalculations.

I think you are missing out on the role you are supposed to play as an uncle. There are things you are responsible for doing and you would be shirking your duty if you didn't make a valiant effort --
You must spend the whole week trying to turn the kids against their parents. It is your job to show them how to take embarrassing photos and how to post them on the internet. Your are supposed to teach them new words to say at inappropriate times. The little one needs to know how to mow the carpet, and which color to paint any new baby that might come along. The older one needs to know the right ways to leave embarrassing hygiene products around the house. You are also assigned the duty of giving each child the information needed to throw the mistakes of their parent's childhood back at their parents in the most unhelpful situations.
That's what uncles are for. I am surprised you were not already making a list.

FOX News contributor Judge Napolitano told Neil Cavuto today,
“I think the president is dangerously close to totalitarianism. A few months ago he was saying the Congress doesn’t count. The Congress doesn’t mean anything. I am going to rule by decree and by administrative regulation. Now he’s basically saying the Supreme Court doesn’t count. It doesn’t matter what they think. They can’t review our legislation. That would leave just him as the only branch of government standing.”
