News You Can Use: So Who's That Hawt Ad Girl?

Thanks to the internet you need never again go through life wondering who that hot girl in the ad you watched repeatedly is. Or where she does her laundry.

Because these days there's a blog for every possible niche, kink, and quirky interest. And no matter how freaky you are, there's still a group of like-minded freaks out on the web who manage to take it all a little too far.

And don't thank me - thank DrewM.

Q: Who is High Maintenance Girl in this AXE Snake Peel commercial?

A: Sophie Lovell Anderson
Sophie is an actress from the UK and has been appeared on TV shows (most notably Secret Diary of a Call Girl) and movie roles such as Stag Night of the Dead. She has also starred in a few UK commercials solidifying her WITHAG credentials.

How To Get Along With The Opposite Sex

And here Neo-neocon points to some tongue-in-cheek advice to both men and women.

If you ask a woman a question, don't interrupt her response by saying, as you impatiently tap your fingertips on the nearest table, "Get to the point." The point you don't get is that our intricate narratives - interlaced as they are with our multi-layered interpretations, embroidered with the richness of our subtle observations, and enhanced by our exquisite cascades of details that might well have entirely escaped your notice, and without which your understanding of life would be the poorer - are what an answer is to us. As Walter Cronkite used to say, "And that's the way it is."

I so wish Mrs. Maetenloch could tell me what happened each day with a title - 'Intrigue at Work' -  and a summary - "They announced the new program and Mary is so unhappy she's transferring and Jane may quit" - followed by how it all went down which may then include the details of the dream she had last night and what's on sale at Kohls. But alas I know that can never be.

The F-16 Fighting Falcon - 4,500 Built And Still Going

The first YF-16 flew as part of the Light Weight Fighter competition in 1974. Of course, back then it was a General Dynamics product. It wasn't until 1993 that Lockheed acquired GD's aircraft business, including the F-16. To celebrate the delivery of the 4,500th F-16, Lockheed Martin released this video.

Given the sheer numbers of F-16s produced and their popularity around the world it's very likely there'll be F-16s still flying in 2050.

Bill, when I was inprocessing at Edwards AFB, c. 1979, they showed us lots of flight test films with comments, including this one.  The F-16 accidental flight was actually the first time the aircraft left the ground.

The first F-4 Phantom flew in 1956, I believe.

Over 5,000 of the two -seat multi-role fighter / strike airplane were built, for the Navy, Air Force, Marines and many exports.

At this time, I doubt more than a few are still flying anywhere.  So when the F-16 officially terminates production at Lockheed Martin, I give it 15 years after that when the last one is still flying in any quantity with any air force anywhere. A fighter plane goes through a lot more engine and acceleration evolutions than a B52, for instance, and the airframes will flat wear out after so many thousands of hours of flight.

But it was and is a great little bird.

Yeah, they found out that the North Vietnamese had a different take on dogfighting, and the lack of a gun was kinda hurtful.  There was a gatling gun that was retrofitted to the older models that was spun up by the airspeed of the plane.  Then later models had the gatling gun built in with an electric drive motor.  All the later model fighters have the Vulcan gatling gun in them.

The Sparrow was supposed to be the all-weather killer missile, but in the '60's it only worked about 15-20% of the time.  The early Sidewinders were pretty effective, and the latest interation is still an awesome short range weapon.

When my daughter tells a story you CANNOT interrupt her....ever.  She's been this way since she was little.  If you did interrupt her, she would start the story all over again.  I would tell my husband and son to not ask any questions or say anything until she is finished.  I should never have said anything to either of them because from then on, whenever she'd start one of her stories, they would both get this look in their eyes....wait until she's about 5 mins. in and start asking questions.  OY!  The damn story would start all over again right after she yelled at them for interrupting her.  Every.damn.time.

100 IMO, the AF took a step backwards, airshow-wise, when they took the Thunderbirds out of F-4 and put them in (first T-38s, fer crying out loud, then) F-16s.  The F-15 would have been better, I think.  If you want to see a jet with astounding maneuverability, check out an F-18!  Turn on a frikkin' dime.

109 For those of you who've allowed me to share with you what happened over the weekend, I wanted to give you an update (those who are interested in how this kicked off, see the Friday Night OOT for details; I posted > 4am). Sad news, unfortunately. Mark, the gentleman who had the heart attack at our home on Friday night, died yesterday afternoon. The second heart attack he had Saturday morning seems to have been the "final nail", as it were. He was a little responsive Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning, but finally slipped away early Sunday PM. His partner was there with him when he died, and he was never taken off the respirator. He seems to have really just wanted to go on his own terms. It really is for the best, though. His brain was oxygen starved for close to an hour, even with the continuous CPR. The docs were pretty convinced by Sunday morning that he'd have been in a permanent vegetative state, even if he'd pulled through. As it was, his heart was so damaged from the two severe attacks that they would not have even been able to perform any kind of reconstructive or bypass surgery. My wife and I have been reminiscing about him a lot today. He was always there with a helping hand. Especially when I've been laid-up with back problems (more often than not, of late), he's been around just to pick up the slack. Always with a smile, always with a kind word. Always asking me about my mother, who recently had her knee replaced. Just a sweet, gentle, generous man. He was a blessing. And he will be missed. I hope everyone here has someone like him in their lives. You most likely do, even if you don't realize it at the moment. Thanks for letting me share. Your encouragement and well wishes do not go unappreciated.

L Rob, you probably know more about this than me, but I think the reason why they took  the F-4' s from the Thunderbirds was because they were so expensive (fuel wise) to operate.  From what I understand, the F-4 is also pretty difficult to fly. The older models were a little heavy and underpowered in climbs and turns.  Flat out they were very fast.

Which is why they went to the T-38's (meh) and then to the F-16 (better).  The F-15 is also a big gas hog, and the Air Force didn't have enough to spare to risk losing one in an air show (which seems to happen every so many years).

F-16s all built in Fort Worth, I think.

CJ, you're right.  Fuel usage, or more accurately the public's perceptions of such, had a lot to do with the T-Birds aircraft, hence the T-38, at least.  Regarding power, though, I think the F-4 had a thrust to weight ratio of nearly or slightly better than 1:1.  They'd climb almost straight up.  With the burners lit, they were bingo fuel in about 30-40 minutes unless they left with two 370s and a center tank.  Gas hogs deluxe!

Never met an F-4 pilot who didn't love them.

173 When my daughter tells a story you CANNOT interrupt her....ever. 177 Overall, I think the Mistakes Women Make with Men article leaves a lot to be desired.

Some problems I had with me ex, that from discussing with other people aren't that uncommon...

1) Taking things out on me. Yes, your boss was a jerk to you today. And yes I will listen to you tell me about how big of a jerk he is. But when you start bawling me out because I forgot to do X or didn't do Y perfectly when you are really angry at your boss? That's not ok.

2) Ignoring my stories. Yes, I get that political issue X isn't all that interesting to you (and especially if you don't listen to me say why it should be), but if listening to what the other woman at work wore that made her look fat at work is worth talking about, I think you can make time to discuss "Fast and Furious" or the debt bomb. It might help if you actually know who is on the ballot in November before going in to cast your vote too.

3) Laziness. Yep, I get tired too, but those clothes on the floor aren't going to wash themselves. Maybe you could do something about it to? Because you certainly aren't going to fix the leaking pipe or the wireless internet connection...

This is an interesting one. Before I met my ex-wife I remember two other women I was dating. One, I am pretty sure. ended after a few dates because I was not fast enough in whipping out my wallet on every date, and another who ended it after a few dates because I did whip out my wallet first.

This part of dating sucks by the way. There are far more rules that men have to stick to...or else...that vary from woman to woman.

Being older and wiser though, I think the "I asked you out I'll pay" followed by roughly alternating works wonders with women I want to date.

If your guy is an introvert you need to get to the point quickly because he has zero patience for superfluous talk. And if there isn't a point then maybe there's no need to bring it up in the first place.

>>>>

As an introvert, I concur.  Even a simple preface of, "there is no point, nothing that needs a solution in this story I'm about to tell you.  I just need to get it out and share it with you," before launching into the War And Peace length recounting of her visit to the grocery store would have been a tremendous help.

The stories that start with, "our child XYZ had an event today ...," or "you won't believe what happened with the plumbing today ..." need to get to the point by the third sentence, else I'm gonna freak.

And I mean we don't HAVE to have mashed potatoes, but even if we have them steamed or baked, we need butter. Or we could just have rice, but you don't like rice with steak. 274 I'm like my dad was in conversations, get straight to the point.  Our mom was a little wordier, but not much.  My baby sister is that way, too.  My middle sister feels like she needs to tell you every backstory to the simplest of questions, and though I love her dearly, it's hard not to stand there tapping my foot and giving the "hurry it up" motions with my hands.  (That makes her mad, I found out.)

My ex was like cthuhlu describes, starting conversations when he'd be down the hallway or start them out in a voice so low that I couldn't always hear the full conversation.  "What?" would many times be met by an exasperated look, and an "I think you need to get your hearing checked" comment.

If during their honeymoon he didn't want to leave the room, and she couldn't persuade him to spend the room-time in more fruitful pursuits, then she has a problem on her hands.

If he wanted to stay in and she wanted to go out and he made the point by saying something like  "I'd rather watch a special on toilets rather than stand in the park and watch mimes and dancing monkeys" well, then I might just have to side with him on that one.

That's an easy one, your hook ups take care of your sexual needs. Your mom takes care of everything else, cooking, cleaning. A women you already know and trust who will never leave you. Girls you sleep with just fill your quota, no need for emotional connections that will fall apart. Pretty immature but that's the way it is.

303 Never understood the dream outrage thing. Closest I've heard to a vaguely reasonable explanation involves the person takes waaay too much credit in their intuition trying to tell them something subconsciously; ergo, the dream is a mirror of something already in the relationship. As I have zero faith in my intuition and constantly second-guess myself, maybe that explains why I've NEVER done that crap. (Though the fact I rarely remember dreams in the first place surely helps in starving temptations.) Sometimes my husband asks if he was in my dreams and feels slightly saddened if I didn't, but that's the most he ever suffers from my dreams.

304 Lord, the banning I would get if I answered this in the manner it so richly deserves........ Posted by: Tammy al Thor at April 09, 2012 11:16 PM (SsG4J) see, I think the difference here is explained rather well in the movie spinal tap. have you seen spinal tap? in the movie there is an instance where the band has trouble getting approval for their new album cover for an album titled smell the glove. the album cover has a scantily clad lady crawling around on a leash and having a glove shoved in her face; fyi that is also called what jeff's date did with jeff on saturday. the cover was rejected by management since they considered it offensive to women for some reason or other. the band was surprised to see one of their rivals, Terry Ladd, have a cover approved by management in which he was tied up and abused by a gaggle of girls. the band was initially confused by the approval of his cover and the rejection of their cover but then they puzzled out that the difference between the two was who was being abused and who was abusing. In the eureka moment the made on e of their more profound statements "there is a fine line between stupid and clever." http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=InwMfeT2FdY So anyway, if I had said "On another point I would suggest that in both instances you would have been more successful if you had simply said "listen you filthy f----n c-------e and whipped out little 18-1, or as I have heard him referred to 8.5 before dinner. and said that's right b---- why don't you sl----r and d---l all over that k--b while we wait in the bar for our table and if you are any good then I will whip out my wallet and we will have dinner but either way you will get f-d. that would be wrong, so I did not say that. the difference is not only the sentiment but the words you select to convey the sentiment.

Sometime, check out the black version. Seriously. Well, it's not exactly a black Spinal Tap, but sort of in the same spirit. It's called Fear of a Black Hat. Lots of curse words, but hilarious and with a sharp intelligence behind it. It purports to be a documentary on a rap group done by a woman getting her sociology degree. Sample lyrics, from a song in which the group comes out with their hands cupping their nether regions:

People ask why I walk this way
protection first is all I say
I got it they want it
believe it, they'll steal it
Some of them punks just want to feel it
When they see me grip with both hands
it's a black thing they don't understand

It's true they want to take it all
so before they rip you ball for ball
Cup your hand and cover up
NWH say grab your stuff

I thought I was tuning in to a recorded "Castle" tonight, but instead got this atrocious show "Scandal"!  It is so blatantly leftist, with the cast uttering anti-Republican, anti-conservative crap.  I looked this piece of sh*t up on IMDB to see who wrote/produced it.  It's Shonda Rhimes.  Her photo shows a heavy black woman with a scowl on her face.

367 241 Anyone ever have a spouse sour on you for a day or two solely because of a dream they had wherein "dream you" committed some heinous offense totally out of character with "reality you"?

Posted by: Count de Monet at April 09, 2012 11:16 PM (4q5tP)

One thing to note in the original -- it's "sour on you", not "go completely mental." To a certain extent, it may be some sort of odd rewiring related to building a pair-bond, where a lot of subconscious associations with previous annoying partners are being connected with your relationship.....and dragging baggage with them.

So you get weird stuff like: "I dreamed that you took me to my High School prom and you were really rude." "Who'd you actually go to the prom with?" "John Doe, but he was a jerk." "We didn't meet until long after your prom." "Yeah, too bad.....you'd be the only guy I'd want to go with."

So you end up in the right place overall, but there was a day where you got some sideways looks....

i was studying comparative religions, emphasis Mircea Eliade and Joseph Campbell, and was on FIRE about archetypes and various types of teaching stories, and well philosophical questions that belonged in class. Politics (This was the era of bill Clinton so there was plenty) and the arcane personal politics of the russian horse breeders involved with our association. My poor ex would drive home from work, KNOWING i had been saving it up all day long to discuss with him, never knowing quite what was going to be thrown at him, only knowing it would be complex and he would be expected to keep up, after a 2 hour commute.

i almost feel sorry for the poor bastard, and it did contribute to me not blaming him for his psychotic behaviour for a long long time.

I vowed never ever to do that to Grim. Not that hed care, or would answer me. its a completely different relationship. At least until he goes to University and takes the introductory coursework to keep up. We talk about other things.

Every man knows that. What we want after a hard day of work is quiet and peace, but what women want is someone to talk to after a day of being alone or with kids all day. Its one of those sacrifices men make, hoping it will be worth it.
"red heads are not so easy to find as you might think."

438 sistrum: I probably will, given that I'm just about out of CDs and DVDs to sell. On the plus side, I'm upgrading as many of my movies as I can to Blu-Ray and have made all but a blood vow to myself never to sell them. I'm a tactile guy; I admit I like being able to not just buy a movie, but feel and touch it too. Not the same when you just download a copy to your DVR from Netflix for $9.99, though I know that's most likely the wave of the future: everything's gonna be on the "cloud."

I remember when the Blue Angels went from F-4s to A-4s after a bad training accident. That was certainly a step backwards. But now they're in F-18s, so that's cool. Unfortunately, the Naval Air Station near me has closed, so I don't get to see them flying over my house at low level any more.

Not yet, its almost ready to come out, been working it little by little. Its going to be a little bit of a worm, because the glue joints were loose on the sides of the neck, and right under the heel in the back, and it had strings on it for years like that so it slightly warped the part of the tenon thats in the pickup route, because thats the only section that is holding. When you go to push the neck where it should be it wants to spring back. I'm about ready to put the steam needle to it.

457 230 Ampersand doesn't work. Get that fixed.

---------

I remember the great ampersand famine of ought-twelve. Couldn't get one for love or money. It was all caused by an explosion in the hamster wheel grease factory in the suburbs of Sydney. We didn't realize at the time how well ampersands work as a substitute hamster wheel lubricant, nor did we realize the critical importance of smooth-running hamster wheels to the economies of the southern hemisphere.

Of course, it all came to a head when the North Koreans headed south to seize the ampersand farms that had been feeding the Asian keyboard manufacturers.

That's when shit got real, right there.

But try to tell that to the young 'uns these days, they won't believe you.

488 Tammy al Thor: Was at the Rose Bowl flea market just on Sunday! -- what can I say, I'm not the churchgoing type. And it seemed wallet-friendlier than I remembered from times past, while Long Beach seems to have gotten snottier. I think they got some "well everybody says Rose Bowl is best but lemme give you the real scoop..." sort of conspiratorial press (you know the kind, those arch writers who must champion Something Other at all turns) and it went to their head.  I don't do Rose Bowl much, but I'm a more frequent roamer at the Pasadena City College one. No entry fee is nice, but you have to traverse the entire campus now to catch everything. And I still go to Long Beach regularly in spite of all, there's enough mass and concentration there that the hipsters and shabbies haven't diluted it past the point of my tolerance. The fleas are a major vice of mine, I confess.

You had to see this 1970's marshal amp I had to piece back together for this dude. His girlfreind got pissed one night and beat it with a meat tenderizer hammer, the square wooden ones with the the little rows of spikes on the face. She broke all the tubes, beat the filter capacitor until it had the hammer imprint in them, then she threw it off the second floor balcony which broke all the corner finger joints in the box.

522 good evening, morons.

Can anyone who knows more than me explain a little about Scott Walker signing the rollback of a 2009 Wisconsin Act that expanded employee discrimination suits? The 2009 expansion gave employees new powers to sue in circuit courts and to collect punitive damages. The existing law (which now obtains once again) allows suits in federal courts and awards back pay, attorneys' fees, and reinstatement.

The rollback is considered better for employers.

That's all I know about it. Of course the libby idiots are screaming SCOTT WALKER LEGALIZES MURDER OF WOMEN IN THE STREETS, but I'd like to have a better grasp of the truth. (I'm already arguing at a dumb lefty website with some boring ol' facts provided by the Wisconsin Bar Journal, but those facts are pretty dry and don't give me much intuition about the law and its repeal.)

tnx and I hope you're not all drunk, or that you are, accordingly.

563 And yep, Tammy that was Mr. Mellencamp. I have lots of memories of him, mainly because I was in his special two-period-long Video Production ROP class in my senior year (1983-84).

This was back when a 'portable' in-the-field, electronic news gathering (ENG) field setup consisted of both a Sony Trinitron camera *and* a U-Matic (think BIG videocassettes) recorder, connected by a rather large cable, both of which could be worn either by one or two persons. Total weight of all the equipment was probably about 30 pounds.

I'd say it's noticeable more 'urban' now. Still suburban, but a bit more cosmopolitan. I'm beyond shocked that our California Pizza Kitchen location is still open after this past recession. OTOH, I think we actually benefited overall a bit from the housing bubble. A significant number of higher-earning families and couples moved in, and lower-earning families who decided to go for the easy big-time house-selling cash moved out.

606 Doing Lakewood public access was a lot of fun. We had folks who took it seriously, too. Most of our shows were virtually network-quality, because we had live-to-tape control room directors and technical directors who knew what they were doing and took the time to study how professionals did their jobs.

We had a cooking show with a Mr. Sachs called "Sachs In The Kitchen," a devotional show called "People of Victory," and a producer/performer named David Childress who IMHO could have become a successful regularly-working comedian at least, if not famous. He did three successive shows, "Neighborhood Movie Watch" (a spoof of Siskel and Ebert that reviewed actual movies), "Focus 52" (a comedy news show), and "Tube: Uncommon" (a Letterman-style talk show), all in the space of about seven years, and all of which were as funny if not more so than most of the sitcom fare you found on the networks back around the late 80s/early 90s.

607 #156

There was a time when that was an approved term. It lead to the term Afro for big hair of the kind that grows straight out with a wiry strength allowing for a huge radius. 'Afram' was also in vogue for a while. You can see both terms used a lot in SF novels of the late 60s/early 70s era. Amerind was another one, for American Indians before Native American became the official label.

A now-balding acquaintance of mine in his 50s loves to show off the pictures of his epic Afro from his youth. He says it gave him a muscular neck but also made him constantly feel someone was sneaking up on him, as any head movement created a large dark mass in his peripheral vision. And the bed head was a huge problem in the morning.

Yeah, I was just having one of those "cognitive dissonance" things. I'm in the city of Los Altos as a near-50-year-old a couple of times a month, and it went crossways with living in the Los Altos neighborhood of the City of Long Beach in 1972 as a ten-year-old.

On the other hand, I was looking at the Google Maps satellite view of Minnie Gant Elementary, and its playground is still acres of blacktop hell punctuated by a little bit of greenery where I once spiked my knee on a sprinkler head and it's never been the same. You can even see the zigzag of the concrete drainage ditch that winds across the west side of the playground.....one of my classmates was taunting me one time, and I went out after him across the damned drainage ditch.....and ended up getting stitches in my chin without getting within 10 feet of him. Probably lucky for both of us -- I was small and fat, but had been taking Tae-Kwon-Do and was in a murderous state of mind.

Speaking of Tae-Kwon-Do....hey, there's the YMCA where I used to go! My parents pulled me out after I was thrown out of the meeting room through a plate-glass window -- looks like about where the raised roof is near the pool.

It could be worse. I went out to visit the BH's family stomping grounds one time.....they have a long stretch of beach nearby named "Long Beach"; a good sized, but shallow body of fresh water named, "Big Fresh Pond"; a pond that you can harvest scallops from called, "Scallop Pond"; a town nearby at the head of a river named "Riverhead" -- seriously, at first glance the place looks like an invented map for a fourth-grade reading text. But interspersed with these horribly literal names are places like Sagaponack, Quogue, Mattituck, Peconic, and Arshamonaque.

I've always joked that you can tell who was in charge of setting up your town: the architects and city fathers/mothers, or the developers and realtors. Actually, the ancestral stomping grounds were on the east end of Long Island, NY -- it's not really developers as such, more Indians/colonists/transportees/immigrants.....and THEN developers.

Speaking of developers, though.....did you know that "Lakewood" was originally a swamp? That's why it developed a bit later than surrounding areas -- they had to drain it first.

No, he painted the room ... I showed him a vine & leaf stencil that he agreed was not too fufu, so I get to decorate.

Tried out a light foam roller that looked OK-ish, so I am going to experiment with a dense foam roller.

After that do some experimenting with spray adhesive or elevated stencils and see what look we like - if any.

If nay, we might try pre-cut decals - sharper edges ...  Airbrushing was suggested ... I'm just not sure I can color match as close to the baseboard as I want with a specialty paint.

Re Lakewood starting off as a drained swamp: could be true, but the story I've always heard (and as portrayed in an early 1960s documentary called "The Lakewood Story" that is on a continuous loop on the city government cable channel) is that Lakewood was almost entirely bean fields pre-1930.

There *was* (is) a lake in the middle of the country club, called Bouton Lake, nearby of which the first dwellings in the area were built and inhabited. But could it have been originally a swamp, and simply dressed up by the addition of the golf course around it? Possibly.

As you get older, you do experience more and more odd types of companionship. When my BH was seriously DCS'd in Hawaii, I got to help her down to the chamber every morning as an invalid, then try to grab dinner with her before the treatment faded each night. She got to deal with my apnea. It's just part of aging.

727 Love you, Robert, but not in the Preparation H way. Get a puppy. I'm sure you'll find your 'roid lovin' girl.

The A-7E Corsair II, most underappreciated, unattractive light attack jet ever.  1 pilot, one engine, 6 wing hard points, two Sidewinder rails on the fuselage, and a 20 mm cannon that made a most juicy wet fart noise when it strafed towed targets.

MSNBC assuring us this morning Obama is much, much more likable than Romney, because - don't ya know - the average Joe can relate much better to a radical black ntionalist community organizer University of Chicago law lecturer and Alynskite socialist than some white guy who's wife own to Caddies, natch. 767 So in news from the alternate universe of northeastern PA:

Last Thursday, Tyler Winstead was shot dead by an unknown assailant. According to this morning's Citizens Voice website, Winstead, "... an eighth-grade student at GAR Memorial Junior/Senior High School, was fatally shot in the chest outside his friend's home at 117 Hill St. in Wilkes-Barre on Thursday night. He had been walking home with the friend from playing basketball at the Catholic Youth Center."

Wilkes-Barre police have released few details and have made no arrests, leaving the parents frustrated, as most crimes of this type are usually solved in 22 to 44 minutes, depending on the run time of the TV series involved.

I can understand that the relatives of this teen, who by all accounts was a good kid on his way to becoming a fine young man, are upset and frustrated, but I think expectations are a little unrealistic here.

The truth is, most crimes around here seem to be solved because someone couldn't keep their mouth shut, and word got back to the police. I'm willing to bet a shiny quarter this case will be solved the same way.

Also, note that there has been no racist demagoguery worth noting. Mr. Winstead was black; the assailant is, statistically, most likely a black male. No nationally famous race-baiters have offered to come here.

Even at its worst, life is better outside the big cities.

771 Those Dell books do not cost 25 cents now.  Had to be from the 1950-1965.  After around 1965 the cost of these books rose very fast to over a dollar per book.
