My favorite Captain Nemo has always been the one from Mysterious Island, the 1961 movie with Ray Harryhausen special effects. I liked him even better than James Mason's Nemo in 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.
I was surprised to found out last night he's Herbert Lom, the hilarious Chief Inspector Dreyfus from several of the Pink Panther movies. I had no idea. They're so different, I never put the two together.
More Mysterious Island trivia: Notice the girl in the first picture? Her name is Beth Rogan. I couldn't believe a women would wear a miniskirt like that in 1961, so I had to double-check the date of the movie. Yep. It turns out that was very edgy for the time. According to Wikipedia, the first miniskirts in the movies were those worn by Anne Francis in Forbidden Planet, five years earlier. Wikipedia also mentions Devil Girl from Mars. As far as I can tell, this is the third appearance of a miniskirt in the movies--four years before the miniskirt became a worldwide fashion.
Aye carumba. More trivia: Abby Elliot from the current cast of Saturday Night Live? She's Chris Elliot's daughter. And Chris Elliot? Besides being a Fancy Lad, he's the son of Bob Elliot--from the comedy team of Bob and Ray. All three have been on Saturday Night Live. Bob was a guest on a show during the 1978 season.
Of course, I can't mention Chris Elliot without posting that Ace of Spades HQ favorite, the Cabin Boy dance:

First Men in the Moon, with the wonderful Lionel Jeffries.

I have a recommendation of Christian literature to the Jews amongst us.
That would be Jerome's commentaries on the Torah and Prophets. The man spent much of his life with the rabbis of his day, learning Hebrew and getting the basics of exegesis right. I've had occasion to dive into his commentaries twice, first on the NT and secondly on the Exodus. Jerome was a genius. And a minority of his Torah insights are Christian-based, from what I saw; he mainly just interprets the text.
Much of his commentary is still stuck in Latin, as far as I know; but a run through Google Translate plus basic understanding of any Romance language can get you through the basics.
Okay: Jews' turn. What would you have Christians read from rabbinic literature?

I always preferred ice milk. I kept trying to find it and researching it on the web learned that with the whole low-fat craze of the last twenty years or so, there are now regulations about what can be called what. Apparently, some of the low-fat ice cream started out as ice milk but now they add all kinds of shit to it to make it creamier.

It has Leslie Nielsen in a "serious" role.
Prior to "Airplane", Nielsen was pretty much type-cast as a villain/serious guy. It's one of the reasons his role in the comedy was so funny.

We had a guy doing technical training for us with the last name Elliot. He looked like he was Chris Elliot's brother. He said there was no relation.
He taught really, really, dry, technical material. Code of federal regulations and agency interpretations. BOOORRRIINNGG. essential to staying on the good side of the regulator and cost-effective, but boring.
He made the material interesting with humor. His humor was more of the George Carlin type. Lots of word play, and loud recititations of the material. I actually remember some of it because of the humor.

There ya go, chemjeff. You are already torturing yourself enough by eating salad, lol! But, I have the BEST salad dressing that I have made for years (although not recently). Get some garlic cloves, peel and cut in half. Rub your (wooden) salad bowl with them, rub rub rub. Throw out the remains. Put in some salt and freshly ground pepper (if you like) and then put a small amount of oil in the bowl and beat it with a fork so it takes on the garlic you rubbed. Add the greens, squeeze half a lemon over the top and toss. It's really, really good.

I ran into a little bad luck on my second tour and spent the spring, summer and part of the fall of 68 in that big, now closed hospital in Oakland. After a while there was plenty of time off duty and I got to see the whole Summer of Love unfold in the Haight Ashbury, Funny how things don't change much over the years, now OWS has to have "Rape Free" tents. I wonder, will the percentage of young women ending up addicted and prostituting themselves for some pimp be higher or lower than the Summer of Love?

Just finished watching the newest episode of Sherlock -- A Scandle in Belgrade on PBS. It was really well done and if you're a Sherlock Holmes nerd, a number of easter eggs are strewn about for the fanbois. The main story is loosely based on Doyle's "A Scandle in Bohemia" -- however, Irene Adler is now a dominatrix and utilizes her erotic skills to gather state secrets. The ending of the episode hints that Holmes and Adler had a romantic relationship.

Driving back to KC from Kentucky. As we hit Kansas some of the worst rain I've ever seen. Visibility near zero. Finally sort of drive out of it, get home. Starting to rain. Been on the road for 11hrs. Crack a Beer that I brought home. Sirens go off. Tornados...Downstairs neighbor calls, says I need to get down there. Raining like nothing I've ever seen, complete with lightning just absolutely booming1
Takes a while for the storm to pass, meanwhile there is flooding, which I have to deal with. Nothing bad, just headed it off.

Cool, so I managed to remember something.
I was pretty impressed with Hobble Creek Canyon, we'll probably do some more camping up there. The parks at the mouth, including the golf course, looked nice too. The weather was just about perfect, enough of a chill to make the fire worthwhile rather than just a pro forma effort. The hiking kicked my butt though; I need to get out more.Posted by: J. Make sure to do the Nebo Loop road in the fall, which runs between Payson and Nephi. (I think there are places to camp along there too. certainly lots of places to pull up and hike etc.)
We're going to Capitol Reef for a couple of days later this week (retreat for husband's work). I'm looking forward to it. We both like desert landscapes. And a couple of weeks later (after Memorial Day) we'll check out St. George and Zions. Our idea of "camping" is a nice inn or lodge, though!

Nice! I know I said this when you were just planning on moving out here, but do try and stop by Goblin Valley. I've got vague plans on going there this spring or fall, depending on the availability of certain family members.
I get the hotel/lodge camping thing. I even said to a friend of mine about a decade ago something to the effect of 'the next time I go camping, there better be a king size mattress involved'. And yet here I am, sleeping on a backpacking foam pad. Ah well. Didn't mess my back up as much as my mattress at home does.

It's a Remington No. 5 Rolling Block in 7mm Mauser (7x57mm). I still have to take a chamber cast but the bore is pretty good.
The "Roller" is a very strong action, and this model was made to withstand modern ammunition pressures, unlike pre-1901 models. The chamber cast is because the "official" chamber dimensions for the 7x57 changed in 1920 - depending on tolerances you could have headspace issues (but this one *has* been fired with modern ammo).
I may go with dark metal and a light "blond" stock, which I just kind of like, if I replace the stock, which is a little chewed up but structurally sound. Or I may carve up the stock even more, and go with some kind of "style" in the rebuild, just customize it on a theme. Like some kind of red-and-black "witchcraft motif" design, some minor carving on the stock, like I said a "hollywood" theme like a "special" rifle you'd have in some mystical-Western movie or something.
The Roller was in use from the 1860s.

Then again, there is some truth to the fact that people who go no-fat dieting tend to be hungry all of the time, and therefore tend to fall off that particular wagon more frequently. Some sugar and some fat are normal in any diet, and cutting them out completely risks your diet screwing the pooch.
Granted, most people who diet have issues with weight--else why the hell are the dieting?
I can see how replacing food with chemicals could cause problems we don't know entirely about.

Portion control Is probably the number one culprit though. Seriously, a food scale costs like $20 at target. See what an actual serving of, say, pasta, looks like, and compare it to your usual meal at olive garden.

This. When MrsCaniac and I started Weight Watchers, we started off by using Lean Cuisine, Healthy Choice and Smart Ones for our dinners. It was a huge adjustment seeing what a portion size really is. 4 months later, when we go out for dinner, I get the smallest size of the entree and it is now quite filling.
Most people eat the "diet foods" as an "addition" to their regular diet. Thinking that if they drink a diet Pepsi and eat a bag of chips that it is better than eating the chips with a regular Pepsi. Oh, and since they were so good by drinking the diet Pepsi, they will treat themselves to a Snickers.
That and not drinking a lot of alcohol.

That's how I cook too...unless I'm doing something specific like Hollandaise that requires precise quantities and temps and whatnot. I see the goal and add flavors that I like until I get there. Doesn't always work, which is why valu-rite should always be close at hand.

One fine day at the San Diego Wild Animal Park -- a larger and more free-form area owned by the Zoo guys -- we were riding the tram around, and the narrator matter-of-factly noted that we were coming up on the gorillas and should be alert because "they throw things".
Sure enough, as we drive along the enclosure, the gorillas casually reach behind and grab a fresh, warm handful of feces and sidearm it towards the tram (fortunately not our car). Looked like they'd been practicing, too.

It's a great idea. But the name isn't right. If it weren't for the 'ettes, I'd call it the "how to earn your Man card" thread. But the 'ettes deserve respect, and can do this stuff anyway. Maybe "building a better Moron?" Or "A Moron's guide to Life?" I've already realized that "How to not be a dependent Occupy D!ck" won't work, tempting as it is.

My niece has a total 6 children and all of them are on some type of disability. To look at all of them they look as healthy as you or me. Yes people do get through the system and this is sometimes their primarily source of income. My niece had all of her children on disability, getting a check monthly for all of them plus food stamps and has never worked a day in her life as far as I know. Now that 4 of them are of age she has found out that the checks will start coming directly to them instead of her. Her other two kids will be of age in the next two years which means she will loose their checks as well. She has cheated the system for so many years and now she will have to figure out how to maintain her way of living without the assistance of her children's government checks. This is a very sad situation because she in at a point in her life where she will have no income coming in, she has now job skills, so what will she do now? Anyone who does this through the system should ask them this question, "What will I do, how will I live without my disability, or food stamp assistance now?

One nice thing about getting them at a 7-11 (or at an Arco station at a pinch) is because their condiment station is servicing a wider range of product you can get non-traditional in your fixin's. Me, I like pickle chips instead of the usual relish on a hot dog.

couple things -- I use it mostly for little beading on pieces like all the drawer handles. A work item on the list is swapping out the metal tube on the front of the table saw with a longer one so the same fence can serve that router, too.
I have another router table with an incra fence. Cuz that one has separate settings for infeed/outfeed I am trying to make do without a jointer. We'll see how that goes.
That incra fence actually got this whole thing started. I am making a changeable work station a lot like the popular mechanics idea you mentioned above. It will swap various tools into place just like you said. Each tool will mount on the end of the assembly table using french cleats.

That idea will work for a couple bays, but there are a bunch of different drawer heights/widths spread across the bays. A lot of them were pre-planned for specific tools, but others are still in flux.

As luck would have it, we saw "Mysterious Island" popped up on our Netflix queue and we watched it last Friday: we've been viewing some of Ray Harryhausen's best. I saw the movie at the old Granada Theatre in Rogers Park when it first came out. All us boys loved it - for the cool monsters and, yes, the miniskirt.
I was surprised to see that it was a British movie, which I guess is why so many Brit actors were in it. Herbert Lom played villains for the most part; he was one of the criminals in the original "The Ladykillers". Joan Greenwood (who played the aristocratic Lady Mary) did a lot of Ealing comedies: she was the bad girl in "Kind Hearts and Coronets", and the good girl in "The Man in the White Suit". The music was by the great Bernard Herrmann ("Psycho", "The Day the Earth Stood Still") - enough said.
