A bulldozer loomed on the edge of the farm for the majority of the morning.
We continue to recieve overwhelming support from residents and community members. Navy Wants Ultraviolet Cloaking Device for Jet Fighters
Well the sun is a huge UV source and if you're obscuring a plane's signature, you have to deal with that part of the spectrum too:
Now the Pentagon wants the defense industry to come up with a system that can cloak fighters from another telltale type of radiation: ultraviolet energy from the sun.The Navy's latest solicitation to research proposals asks for a "UV obscurant device" that can be "dispersed from an aircraft." The system should be compatible with the Navy's existing counter-measures dispensers, which are currently tailored for releasing infrared flares and radar-foiling chaff to help warplanes dodge enemy missiles.
But the F-35's design apparently does not protect against ultraviolet sensors - that we know of. The Navy's older Hornet fighters are probably equally vulnerable. The UV cloak seems to be a response to a particular type of "dual-band" missile seeker that zeroes in on infrared radiation at first, then switches to a UV sensor in the final moments before striking the target. The UV sensor works by looking for non-reflective shadows against the bright UV glare of the sky - like silhouettes against a lightboard.
An obscurant could blot out a plane's UV silhouette in a shapelesss mass of ultraviolet shadow. "One concept might include a device that very rapidly generates an extended, dense cloud of material that absorbs in the UV region," the Navy solicitation reads.

Yes, Costa Cruises is back and bigger than ever! Man beats smuggling rap because he 'drinks a lot'
Well this was in Sweden.
The 23-year-old man was stopped in October 2011 after entering the town of Helsingborg on Sweden's west coast....Customs officers duly discovered what they considered to be an extraordinary stash of alcoholic beverages, despite the man's claims that the booze was meant purely for personal consumption.
A more thorough probe revealed that altogether, the man was transporting 2,357 litres of beer, 158 litres of pre-mixed drinks, 12 litres of wine, and 15 litres of spirits.
The man was subsequently charged and put on trial on suspicions of illegal alcohol smuggling.
However, the Helsingborg District Court ruled that it wasn't inconceivable that the man's entire cargo of booze and beer was meant for personal consumption, rather than for sale on the black market.
In detailed calculations, the court reasoned that the man, his father, and other relatives could plausibly consume all the beer within a year if they drank 1.3 litres every weekday.
But before you start macking on her you might want to keep in mind who her daddy is.

The last couple of generations have a real general mechanical competence problem. We're breeding a society of dependent people.
Tools and the knowledge how to apply them is one of the most powerfully liberating things people can own. If you can work a pair of pump pliers, you can change a toilet flush valve in about 15 minutes or less, rather than wait around half a day for some plumber to show up and charge you $150 for 15 minutes work. That's pretty liberating.

Good quality tools don't hurt you as much as the junk does. Odd situations are why you have thing like wobbly ratchet extensions, offset wrenches, etc.
Every new situation you encounter that your tool collection can't handle is a new excuse to go buy more tools. Wimmens can think of it kinda like buying shoes, it doesn't take much to prompt a new acquisition.

When I bought my first place, my parents sent me the "Ladies' Tool Box". It's pink.
However, with that tool box, I have changed locks, replaced faucets, fixed leaks, installed curtains, and any number of other functions. I cannot recommend the pink lady-tool-box highly enough.
Getting a man has its benefits, but somehow, all the sweating and swearing never did all that much for getting the work done.

Actually, and I am going back in time for this, but the last time I did them, they were sold freeze-dried. We sprinkled them on fresh papayas and did just fine. Of course, your face will melt from all the laughing. Life was SO much better then, I honestly can't figure out what has gone wrong in the last 30 years, but it sure as shit has.

Vulgaris are shorter and fatter.
Esculenta sauteed in butter and served with pretty much anything is one of my favorite all-time experiences. I used to get them dried for $10/pint at a wine store on College Ave. in Oakland.

I pick a TON of mushrooms every spring. The Whites I get out of the Cottonwood river bottoms are the best ones, by far. But the Blacks in the burn are too easy and once you dry them, I don't find too much difference in flavor. But fresh, there's no contest.
I like stuffing the huge ones with Crab and Lobster.

My dad just ran in the Sunflower relay marathon over the weekend, along with various of my cousins, siblings, et. al. Then last night he had a small stroke. He's in the hospital for observation, but they said it was very mild, and they are prescribing an aspirin a day, presumably for prevention of further issues. His mom died after about 17 strokes, so it's not like it isn't a family thing. She was in her early 80's when she died--he is 83.
Does this sound like the right treatment, or are they giving him the old folks death dance here?
And should I be flying out there? He is with my mom and sister, so it is not like he's alone or anything.
We tend to live a long time in this family, so I'm not sure what's proper.

When I moved my mother to Tennessee, I insisted that she get a full work up from a doctor who specialized in older patients, and sent a list of issues that needed to be addressed.
It's funny, but all the nonsense (peripheral neuropathy, the clicking in Mom's knee, the memory issues, the dizzy spells) that her "doctor" at home ignored and treated dismissively, suddenly got traced to her very slowed heartbeat, and treated.
Get a second opinion. Don't try to diagnose on your own.

Also, it would be difficult for Dad to lose any weight. He is down to fighting weight already, with a real (if old) runners physique. I'm pretty sure his blood pressure is okay--it's my Moms that I worry about there. She's the one with cholesterol issues, but then, she's 82.

It's been more than 20 years since I had relatives from Estonia, just released from bondage under the USSR, visit us here. They were absoluetly dazzled by what they saw.
During their visit we took them to see a huge beach-front home outside York, ME belonging to grandparents of our tenants, a nice couple from Lexington, MA.
Turns, out, from an inspection of documents on the walls, that the family went all the way back to the Lees of Virginia. There was even a contemporaneous doc referring to Mount Vernon and the Washingtons.
I showed one of our guests a dollar bill, and said, "These are their ancestors"
During a lunch, their parents , one who described himself as an ex-CIA guy, kept insisting that it "wasn't that bad" under Communist rule.
Driving back, I commented to our visitors in the back seat "Don't you think (parent) Mrs. X is a goddamn FOOL?"
The eruption in the back seat was classic.

There are two types of stroke, bleeding and clotting. Both involve blood supply to the brain, both look the same from the outside. In one, the blood vessels inside the brain break and leak blood into the brain (and don't provide oxygen and nutrients to brain cells), and in the other a clot forms to block a blood vessel (and no oxygen and nutrients are provided to brain cells).
Obviously, it is hugely important to discern which type is occurring -- since treatment of one makes the other worse. But doctors can do this (if they decide to, and the patient's medical plan allows the expense). Aspirin is a reasonable treatment for a minor clotting stroke. If you continue to worry, find out why they believe it's not a bleeding stroke......if it's something like "we did an MRI and looked", that's good. If it's "most aren't" or "family history", I'd be more concerned.

tcn, at his age I suspect he was already on blood thinners when the TIA happened. Blood thinner is really a misnomer. The blood is not thinner but less able to form clots. A lot has to do with blood pressure. Good luck.

Yes, Lampshade, the market has ALWAYS rebounded. Bulls always follow bears. However, putting money in on the way down is a waste. It's better to wait until it hits bottom and starts to bounce up and then get in (for up plays).
Another alternative is to learn how to do down plays. You can make money much faster playing puts in a bear market than you can doing up plays in a bull.
Stick it in laddered CD's then dollar cost average into a mutual fund?
For now, open a ING saving account...way better interest paid, and costs nothing. I have used them for years.

I finally got my motorcycle running this evening...needed a battery, but since the old one was taken out months ago and the wiring harness was all taped up, I kinda sorta had to guess which terminal was which. I guessed wrong, but it only cost me a single 30 amp fuse. It's a 2002 Kawasaki Vulcan, the tiny 500cc edition, so...not too cool, but fun to cruise around on. I'm kicking myself for taking so long to get one.

That sounds like a great visit ...
Things were going well. Picked a paint for the breakfast nook, picked a blue to try in the kitchen but still looking at a slightly different shade. Picked a green for the master bedroom.
Spent the weekend cleaning paint splatter (some ours, some inherited) from the corner bedroom ==> study. Turns out the floor wasn't sealed, so a TSP wash to take off the paint splatter also starts to take off the paint.
The hubby hates the mottled effect.
The hubby decides to move up the 5 year fix the floor plan to ... now. Starts looking at concrete stains and sealers.
Realize that while the walls look OK, the rose trim ain't gonna fly no more with several of the floor colors he is looking at.
Chocolate is my friend ...
The cable install was something of a fiasco. Phone tech says they'll drop a temporary. Ground tech says no way in heck, tripping hazard. So bring all the computer stuff back to the old house for a while.
Tomorrow is blow the heck out of a few years worth of built up dead leaves - fire season has started out here - from under the oleanders.
The a/c DOES work. Life is good.
