Communism vs. Capitalism in Pictures

PJ O'Rourke once remarked on flying into East Germany that you knew an economic system was terrible when its failure was visible even from 25,000 feet.

Well here are some photos of scenes from East Germany under communism and then later under capitalism. Everything looks a bit brighter and even the trash seems more upscale.

I also highly recommend O'Rourke's essay "What Do They Do For Fun in Warsaw?" based on his 1986 visit to Poland - no one snarked on communism like PJ.

And see if you can guess what economic system these photos came from?

Trick question - both are of modern-day Detroit which has been under the rule of Democrats for almost a century.

Remember When Blowing An Agent's Cover Mattered?

Well me too - but I guess it's different when a Democrat is in the White House and their polls are a bit low:

The leaks about the operation from the American side have infuriated British intelligence officials, who had hoped to continue the operation. The leaks not only scuttled the mission but put the life of the asset in jeopardy. Even CIA officials, joining their MI5 and MI6 counterparts, were describing the leaks as "despicable," attributing them to the Obama administration.

And thanks to the gutless cocksuckers at Wikileaks an Iranian man who may or may not have been an Israeli spy was identified and executed by the government there:

Iran may have used a secret cable published by whistleblower website WikiLeaks to target and hang an alleged Israeli spy.

The disturbing development emerged after the alleged spy, kickboxer Majid Jamali Fashi, was executed in Tehran on Tuesday for assassinating an Iranian nuclear scientist in 2010.

Although WikiLeaks redacted the name of the intelligence source on a leaked US diplomatic cable, it published a description of him as 'a licensed martial arts coach and trainer', writing from Azerbaijan.

According to a report yesterday, Fashi, 24, had visited Azerbaijan for a kickboxing tournament just days before the cable was sent.

Experts said they believe the US Embassy document could have raised Iranian suspicions.

Coffee shop provides Coffee, paternity tests, urine tests, notary, and tax prep

Camden, NJ's City Coffee has managed to thrive, despite the retail mass-collapse in Camden's city center. The coffee shop's secret is to offer every conceivable service. So in addition to coffee and pastries, you can also get a urine test, a paternity test, financial planning, tax prep, a studio photo-portrait, and, soon, a specialist cleanup service for landlords whose houses have been rented by compulsive hoarders. The counter-staff also serve as unofficial fixers for local lawyers, because all the judges and clerks eat there

Well if they also offered dry-cleaning and chakra release, it'd be my one-stop destination.

Best Version of Ode to Joy Ever?

If you're into Ludwig Van even a bit, you'll enjoy this version performed by a 10,000 member (!) amateur choir from Osaka, Japan. The real magic starts at the 6:40 mark.

Vidal Sassoon, Fighter

I only knew of him as a famous hair dresser but that apparently was just one facet of his life:

A veteran of Israel's 1948 War of Independence, Sassoon also had a lifelong commitment to eradicating anti-Semitism. In 1982, he established the Vidal Sassoon International Center for the Study of Antisemitism at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem..

He sold his business interests in the early 1980s to devote himself to philanthropy. The Boys Clubs of America and the Performing Arts Council of the Music Center of Los Angeles were among the causes he supported through his Vidal Sassoon Foundation. He later became active in post-Hurricane Katrina charities in New Orleans.

And before that he was fighting fascists in London - and not the goofy Sir Roderick Spode-types either:

Oswald Mosley, founder of the British Union Of Fascists, had been jailed by Churchill but after his release in 1943 he tried to reignite his campaign against London's Jewish population. "Suddenly there were fascists preaching hate on every corner," Sassoon explained in the early Nineties when he broke his silence over those days.

The young Sassoon - whose parents were both Jewish - took little time in joining an organisation called the 43 Group, which was originally composed of 43 Jewish former servicemen but which swelled to be 1,000 strong. They were a crudely armed paramilitary force with the aim of breaking up Mosley-inspired meetings - with force if necessary. Sassoon likened the clashes between fascists and the 43 Group to "pitched battles" and he was usually in the thick of the fray

Did You Know Abraham Lincoln Had a Patent?

And that makes him unique among all US presidents.

Yet before he became the 16th president of the United States, Lincoln, who had a long fascination with how things worked, invented a flotation system for lifting riverboats stuck on sandbars.

Though his invention was never manufactured, it serves to give Lincoln yet another honor: he remains the only U.S. president to have a patent in his name. According to Paul Johnston, curator of maritime history at the National Museum of American History (NMAH), Lincoln's eminence and the historical rarity of his patent make the wooden model he submitted to the Patent Office "one of the half dozen or so most valuable things in our collection."

Lincoln's patent, No. 6,469, was granted on May 22, 1849, for a device for "Buoying Vessels Over Shoals," when he was back in Springfield practicing law after one term as an Illinois congressman in Washington. His idea, to equip boats with inflatable bellows of "india-rubber cloth, or other suitable water-proof fabric" levered alongside the hull, came as a result of river and lake expeditions he made as a young man, ferrying people and produce on the Mississippi and the Great Lakes.

Kickstarter for Pr0n?

Who needs pron kingpins when you can crowd-finance your own smut?

GoGoFantasy is a patent-pending system for crowdfunding porn. Folks with fetishes, grandmas with groin urgings, and couples into copulating can create projects and request cash in return for filming certain acts. For example, one young lady will mount two cameras in a small plane and film her activity in the cabin. And she won't be reading her Kindle and eating peanuts, if you catch my meaning.

...So far they've raised $26,000 from over 600 active users from 17 countries. Considering the Pebble watch just made $3 million, these are still small potatoes. Like the famed Diane Peerless Productions, a "male order fantasy" outfit in LA once run by a pair of charming brothers, GoGoFantasy is aiming at a certain class of porn connoisseur looking for custom content.

There is a diversity of opinion as to why Detroit has become what it has become.

I read one particularly stupid comment on some blog a few weeks ago that business men had intentionally ruined the city to drive down property values so they could buy them at a bargain, or some such nonsense.

"Run by Democrats" is part of the clue to the answer, but just doesn't go quite far enough.

If you dare to be interested in some depth to this, go to sbpdl.  It will disturb you and perhaps make you angry, but there is an eery ring of truth to much you will read there.

87 Kinda funny news story going on here in boring Indiana. So a group of students got into the school at night and put 10,000 sticky notes all over the high school. A janitor let them in to do the senior prank. Well.. school has no sense of humor and suspends the 5 kids for 3 days. Then 60 kids hold a sit in to protest, the 5 kids get the suspension lifted and the 60 all get an in school suspension. Me thinks the school needs to lighten the hell up.

Detroits problems are due to

1) collapse of the auto and loss of auto production due to excessive union problems.  Unions are a huge portion of the democrat base.

2) A huge minority population that has been supported by a dehumanizing welfare system, also a reliable democrat voting block.

I suppose there are a few other problems but I bet they can pretty much all be traced back to the democrat policyies and values.  So yeah It is a typical Democrat success story.

I'm not sure I am getting the "50 Shades of Grey" phenomenon. It's been the top seller on Amazon for weeks, Obama got a question about it, it's bizarre to me why suddenly a book that from what I've read in a number of reviews is badly written drivel has become the big thing, there's already a film optioned for it, and the writer got her start writing fanfic for Twilight. I don't understand why everyone in America is suddenly into reading fiction about BDSM. Don't we get enough of that daily in the news?

I suppose I shall now have hot coals heaped upon my head for stating this opinion, since that seems to be how I'm trending these days.

130 You chill the bra and the red wine inside down to 33 degrees before you go out. You've got about 90 minutes of rock-hard nipples before the wine reaches a drinkable temperature, but after the first 30 minutes, you're horny enough to start the foreplay even if you're not drunk yet. 20 minutes of teasing, 20 minutes of pleasing, 20 minutes of blowing your top. Just about the time the  fishy aftertaste starts to rankle, the wine is ready for drinking, and you guzzle it down. Three minutes and you're ready for round two.

If you're doing a guy, just reverse the steps. That way you have a full hour to savor the vintage, plus a face-saving excuse when round two fails to materialize, and you're home in time for Greta.

It's not just being Democrats.  It's not the unions.

Pittsburgh is a Democrat union town and though it is past its glory, it is not an unihabitable shithole, with miles of wrecked or abandoned houses.

There are plenty of suburb towns around Detroit that are still union and Democrat that are habitable.  A lot of autofactories are still surrounding Detroit.

What is it about Detroit that has caused this?

189 , but it seems like there'd have to be some other draw. Posted by: jenny tries too hard It's because to immigrate to the US, they need a sponsor in the US, and must live with them, until they are self sufficient. Since our immigration (actual, not illegal) policy is completely wrapped up with family, the legal immigrants send an anchor, and then line up to get the rest of the family to the US. They are willing to wait the 8 to 10 years it will take for non-nuclear family members (nuclear family members are 2-3 months, usually.) As soon as another member of the family makes it to the US, they sign up to be sponsors. It's like cats breeding. It becomes geometric.

The SCOTUS is in hiding after the Obamacare over turned and can not rule and will not be followed by the rioters anyway. Please go find Meryl Streep (Alar expert) and the two of you had better not show your faces in Central or Eastern Washington state.

Chris ended up with over $22,000, the lady from BBC- America (Katty Kay? Really? Quite the nom de plume!) had $8000 and Mr. I-know-what's-best-for-you only had $5900. 247 William Dear is the biggest idiot to call himself a detective since Daffy Duck played Doorlock Holmes in a cartoon with Porky Pig.

This is the fucking master detective who investigated the "Dungeon Master" case -- when James Dallas Egbert vanished from the Michigan State campus in 1979.

Hercule Fucking Poirot Dear deduces instantly that Egbert, a devoted Dungeons & Dragons player, had gone insane and was wandering around the steam tunnels under the campus. To get inside the head of the missing kid, Dear even played some games of live-action D&D.

Meanwhile, James Dallas Egbert, who was gay and hadn't come out to his parents, was off in Louisiana working in an oil rig crew. He heard about the search, decided to give himself up.

Lord Peter Fucking Wimsey Dear promptly wrote a book about how he'd cracked this impossible case, and Rona Jaffe used it as the basis for a novel (Mazes & Monsters). It laid the foundation for the "Dungeons & Dragons is dangerous and makes you go INSANE!" hysteria fanned later by Pat Pulling and her "Bothered About Dungeons and Dragons" organization.

James Dallas Egbert did kill himself, probably because he was a young gay man in 1979 with substance abuse issues.

So I'd take anything William Dear says with a 40-lb. sack of driveway salt.

1. The minority population of Detroit is white. The next minority is Mexican. It has been that way since the 80's- maybe a bit before.

2. The decline happened due to white flight in the late 60's because of the race riots, and a hostile black mayor (Coleman Young) who was openly racist and hated the suburbs. It also did not help that during aforementioned, "black youths" were heard bragging that they would come into the burbs and start killing white kids. This is, of course, never reported and did not encourage white taxpayers to "help" Detroit.

3. To this day, Detroit voters will NOT elect a white or a Republican. Case in point: a few weeks ago, a local talk show had a segment on "is Detroit ready for a white mayor?' The majority opinion was that sure, that could happen, but we must, we MUST, no matter what, continue to have black leadership in city hall. Which means: no white mayors.

Draw whatever conclusions you want.

291 Here's an excerpt from "The Amateur": Steven Rogers, an African-American who made a fortune in the private sector before becoming the Gund Family Distinguished Professor of Entrepreneurship at Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management. ----- "After that meeting," Rogers continued, "[Obama] began leaving messages on my cell phone, asking for money for his campaign and that of other Democrats, such as Senator Tom Daschle. He told me that he wanted to show the Democratic Party leaders that he could raise money for candidates throughout the country, and that his success in doing so would increase his chances of being appointed to a powerful Senate committee, such as finance. He specifically asked that I donate $2,000 to five Democrats who were running for reelection. "I agreed to make the campaign contributions, and I invited him to address my students, which he did. Afterwards, in the parking lot, I asked him, 'Where are you going next?' He said, 'Man, I'm going to the South Side. Every Saturday I've got to see Reverend [Jesse] Jackson.' And I said, "When you get elected to the Senate, I want you to come back here and speak to my students.' And he said, 'I'll tell you what. When I get elected, I'll bring your students to Washington.' I said, 'Don't bother. Just bring your black butt back here.' "After he got elected, my students tried to contact him. He wouldn't answer their calls. So I called and said, 'Listen Senator, I'd like you to come.' And he said, 'Listen Steve, I can't come. I'm just inundated with requests. I have Governors calling me. I have Warren Buffet calling me.' I said, 'What about that money I gave you?' And he said, 'Come on, man, you know better when politicians make promises.' ------- [end excerpt] Classy, huh?

Psychologists have found that people will identify patterns where none exist, and try to connect unrelated events in order to understand the world.  Some things are just subject to the random nature of life, though people will try to make a connection between them in order to understand what goes on around them.

298 The best white analogy to Detroit is Greece.

SBPDL's thesis is that white nations and cities choose, or don't choose, to fail; black nations and cities have no choice. SBPDL's thesis is that blacks cannot run their own nations. If you *like* blacks, then, you should oppose their civil rights.

I happen to agree with him. But....

... I also think that most *whites* also can't, in the end, run *their* own nations. Again: Greece. And Orange County, closer to home. Newfoundland went bankrupt too at one point; it wasn't *always* "part of" Canada.

Moldbug is right. I've always said that.

You said you'd bring the Kellogg students to Washington, and all I'm asking is that you come speak to your constituents.' "A year later, he finally showed up. He gave a powerful speech. He took pictures with my wife and me. And I haven't spoken to him since. What you have with Barack Obama is a lack of character." ---- [End of excerpt] That's what ended Chapter Four.

Evening y'all.

I love seeing side by side comparisons like that....of the differences between communism and capitalism. ....Whether it is 'before-communism', or 'after-communism'....the differences are always stark. ....That's what happens when you punish people for achievement and for owning property.

That video of the Osaka mega choir is amazing. ....10,000 amateurs? ...Amateurs? Wow.

Damn Wikileaks coxucker and the assholes in Barky's administration who got that Iranian asset killed. ....Damn them all to hell.

I remember learning in school, that Lincoln had a patent. ....He also worked with his hands so much, in his early life...before 'work gloves'...that his hands were often so painful, that writing his lessons by candlelight at night, was an ordeal in itself. ....I was lucky to have gotten my education before the Dept of Education was created....and schools still taught such things.

Nice ONT. Thanks Mætenloch, for your efforts on these. ...I read them, but am usually too sleepy to post anything. ....Last night's ONT was great too.

338 Thanks for the tips, Cooth and HB. Filed away for use when I get to that particular project. Tentatively scheduled for "one day". I have thought about planing it, but a few issues came to mind: do it when it is stuck, or when it's not? And if it fits well in the summer, will it leak in the winter? Apropos of nothing: O's ampersand Royals are in the top of the 15th. O's got two in the ninth to extend the game.

Definitely plane when stuck. Stop when no longer sticks.

If it leaks in the winter, you need weatherstripping -- foam that it closes into that forms a nice seal. Also makes it go "fwoof" when you slam the door, instead of "bang".

"Louis XVI ascended to the throne amidst a financial crisis; the state was nearing bankruptcy and outlays outpaced income.[6] This was because of FranceÂ’s financial obligations stemming from involvement in the Seven Years War and its participation in the American Revolutionary War.[7] In May 1776, finance minister Turgot was dismissed, after he failed to enact reforms. The next year, Jacques Necker, a foreigner, was appointed Comptroller-General of Finance. He could not be made an official minister because he was a Protestant.[8]

Necker realized that the country's extremely regressive tax system subjected the lower classes to a heavy burden,[8] while numerous exemptions existed for the nobility and clergy.[9] He argued that the country could not be taxed higher; that tax exemptions for the nobility and clergy must be reduced; and proposed that borrowing more money would solve the country's fiscal shortages. Necker published a report to support this claim that underestimated the deficit by roughly 36 million livres, and proposed restricting the power of the parlements.[8]

This was not received well by the King's ministers and Necker, hoping to bolster his position, argued to be made a minister. The King refused, Necker was fired, and Charles Alexandre de Calonne was appointed to the Comptrollership.[8] Calonne initially spent liberally, but he quickly realized the critical financial situation and proposed a new tax code.[10]

The proposal included a consistent land tax, which would include taxation of the nobility and clergy. Faced with opposition from the parlements, Calonne organised the summoning of the Assembly of Notables. But the Assembly failed to endorse Calonne's proposals and instead "

384 The NBA likes having, and actively encourages, a full-on caste system. The teams with the biggest TV markets are consistently great, and the teams with the smallest fanbases are consistently bad, serving as little more than farm teams for the good teams.

True, bad teams have smaller fanbases in most sports. But in the NBA it feels like the cause and effect are backwards. When the commissioner feels comfortable openly stating what teams he'd like to see play for the championship, due to their bigger TV markets, and the refs are known to gamble on games they officiate, it feels pointless to back a team with a small or medium-sized TV market because the odds are so heavily stacked against them.

Is it any wonder NBA players skew left more than most athletes?

And with that in mind, it makes total sense that NBA players are getting lazier. It really annoys me to hear a commentator saying, "Wow, that's his fourth double-double this year, and we've just hit the All-Star break!", when I remember Fat Lever racking up like thirty triple-doubles every season. And he wasn't even considered a superstar!

388 @367: If you listen to the Director commentary for Captain America, it wasnt CGI at all. They made everyone taller and the props larger to make the actor appear smaller. If youve seen the film, that one scene in the beginning where Steve is getting beat up and Bucky comes to the rescue, the actor who played Rogers isnt actually there. He was "green screened" into the scene later. They made "Bucky" walk on a platform and during filming, had to look at certain spots where "Steve" was to be inserted later. They used this technique for most of the "skinny Rogers" scenes.

I don't care that Alabama won; IMO, they lost the right to play for the national championship when LSU beat them, given that there were still-undefeated teams out there not playing for it.

432 D is big. C is medium/big. B is medium/small.

Whether B & C are medium or closer to one end of the spectrum or  the other depends on your height and build.

I'm not exactly picky about breast size, but I do slightly prefer the shape of the smaller ones. And I like them to be proportionate. It's all purely an aesthetic thing, though, and not a big deal. The last girl I dated was 5'1" and a double-D, so that should tell you how crucial this particular trait is to me.

Most guys prefer bigger ones, but it's not generally that big a deal to them, either. They'll date a less busty girl if they have other reasons to like her.

Screw you, hippies! We pay you plenty. Lay off some of your million-dollar administrators, and you'll have plenty of money for, you know, the things you're supposed to do with your budget.

I'm so glad we have TABOR, the TAxpayer's Bill Of Rights, here. It forbids tax increases without explicit voter approval.

Sadly, it doesn't seem to keep government from reallocating funds approved for one purpose to another purpose. But at least we can say, "No more money for you!"

The word probably developed in the same sort of strange way that inflammable did.  People always mistake it for the opposite of "flammable" because it naturally feels to have come from "flame", but inflammable derives from inflame.

I know this isn't the same but I would guess that something of the sort is there in the etymology.

I love seeing how words develop like this.  I don't know the answer to disgruntled, but I figure it has to do with someone wanting to grunt but having to keep his mouth shut ... leading to "murmur murmur murmur ...".  Sounds good to me, but it's just a guess.

The other words ... who knows?

618 Unfortunately, not only can I sleep....but I'm going to very shortly, whether my butt is parked in front of this monitor or whether I'm tucked into bed attached to an assisted breathing device. Considering the potential difference in my condition tomorrow morning, I think I should hit it.

619 Not our Cthulhu, mind you, the other one.

Though I'm sure our Cooth would love a few sacrifices in his honor here and there.

Bullshit.  An image of Bashful being all red-faced after being kissed by Snow White was appropriate, responsive, and as far from unkind as possible.  So, maybe you don't know the imagery.  Here take a look.

649 Certain sections of New Orleans look like those Detroit, and pre-Wall collapse, photos.  Far too many sections.

And yes, The Pesthole, aka The Crescent City, has been under the Dem thumb since Reconstruction.  We've had a couple of Repub governors, but not enough to reverse the entrenched damage and corruption.  (Possibly because the Rs were just as corrupt in their own way.)

651 Umm, sorry to have to correct a small typo - in the segment where you compare photos of communism/socialism vs. capitalism you have a line 'under the RULE of Democrats' and it should be 'under the RUIN of Democrats'.  Easy thing to miss.  Thank you for your time and forbearance.
