funny, I just saw the movie - for the first time
and, I suppose this is heresy, but I don't see why it is talked about as so incredibly awesome.
It is a good story, for sure but I don't understand the #1 status it enjoys.

So...my knowledge of bike brakes is...non-existent. They have some kind of disk brakes...I think.
They also showed me another bike with "hydraulic brakes". the clerk couldn't explain it which made me pretty sure I didn't need them.

Back to the Future is a kid's movie, really. Nicely done, but...whatever.
"12 Angry Men"? "On the Waterfront"?
"Rocky" - really? And "Apocalypse Now". Really - talk about a depressing movie, and really strange too.
"Gran Prix" - what a great racing movie, and sure "The Great Escape" and "The Magnificent Seven". Manly movies with manly guys in them.
"Alien" and "Aliens" would not be on the list because the hero(ine) in both movies is a woman. So not strictly dickly, but still great entertainment.

I thought The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly was a pretty shitty movie. I hate movies where the people only live by random chance several times during the film. It's clear that you just can't make it long in life that way.

The French Connection and the French Connection II. Both great movies. Gene Hackman at his best as an actor.
Heartbreak Ridge. Meh. It is Eastwood doing his nihilist thing. I read where he originally wanted Gunny Highway to be Airborne, but the Army read the script and didn't want any part of it. Highway and his drunken ways would have gotten him drummed out a long time ago, CMH or no CMH.
I'm not sure the Marines can read.

Probably the reason why you didn't like "The Godfather" is that it was an iconic and stylish groundbreaking movie in 1972. So iconic that a lot of the things in it have been copied in newer movies (much like "Citizen Kane" which was also a much copied movie since), so the scenes and the story don't seem fresh to someone seeing it in 2012. Believe me, in 1972 it was a pretty groundbreaking and strikingly imaginative movie.

Trivia: Harrison Ford's 55 Chevy in the scenes where he was cruising the strip was the main car . Another 55 was used for both drag race scenes and was the same car driven by Dennis Wilson and James Taylor in Two Lane Blacktopand. A third junk 55 was used for the crash scene. The strip 55 had a 427 with a 4 speed Muncie, the race 55 had a 454 with a race automatic.

I've gone through those phases with "Weird Science" and "Pump Up The Volume". I loved them as a teen. Hated them in my 20s. Started to appreciate them again in my 30s.

The book "King Rat " was written by James Clavell (who lived it in the Chiangi Prison camp, a really terrible place). Clavell also wrote the screenplay to "The Great Escape".
The underlying meaning to the story "King Rat" is a little lost in the movie, but is much clearer in the book, which is an excellent story.

Ah, but they weren't kids. Alan Ruck turned 30 while shooting that flick. Broderick was 24. Jennifer Grey was 26. (Which made Cindy Pickett as Mrs. Bueller a mother at 13.) Mia Sara was 21 and entirely nailable in the legal sense. It was some sort of holding facility for developmentally disabled adults. AKA actors.
It's weird sometimes for someone without kids to drive past a high school and see what teenagers really look like.

I've always enjoyed Alistair MacLean books. Too bad HMS Ulysses was never filmed, but then I guess it's fairly depressing. Might actually have a better chance of being made nowadays.

The Sand Pebbles was the story of the San Pablo, and American gunboat cruising the backwaters of the Yangtze River during the Nationalist Chinese Revolution, looking out for American interests in that lawless and chaotic time in China.
It was a thinly veiled anti-war movie made in the Viet Nam war era. I think it was a good movie, but it was depressing and a little boring in spots. Very cruel story in some ways. Steve McQueen as an anti-hero who most of the crew of the San Pablo came to hate. Steven McQueen, Richard Attenborough, Richard Crenna, Candace Bergen (when she was young and yummy), and a bunch of other recognizable role players from that era.
The crew came to call themselves "Sand Pebbles", which is where the name of the movie is from.

As much as I detest Timothy Robbins' politics, he's superb as wrongly(?) convicted Andy Dufresne. But Morgan Freeman is electrifying as Red, Andy's buddy and the narrator of the film. The scene with him before the parole board is acting at its highest level.
The story unwinds at a leisurely pace that draws you in and never gets dull. Even better, Shawshank has the most satisfying ending of any movie I've ever seen. If you haven't seen it, see it.

Steve McQueen flick. McQueen is great but the film drags (at least until they get to the scene with...was it the Boxer Rebellion? Whatever, it featured death by 1000 cuts so it got your attention.

I liked it (just the first one) but it wouldn't make my list.
I did love the scene where they are starting to walk the arid landscape, looking for any sign of life, and finally find one little living plant which Heston promptly rips it out of the ground and drops it at his side. I still laugh just thinking about it.

I liked it but I know some here hated it.
I'd love to go the the museum in Chicago to see them.
They're a little tattered, museum dust mite or something like that. Watch the movie at night, alone, with the lights out. Then go see them in the museum, even the marble eyes will make your shit squirm.

I'll second To Live and Die In LA, great movie and you have to give credit to whoever decided that a goofy couple of guys best known for their goofy song that had the same name as their band could pull off the theme song to a pretty gritty movie.

I am slightly disturbed at how much I like that movie. It is still one of the most intense films I've ever seen and must have been positively scandalous when it was released.
In the remake, Juliette Lewis totally stole every scene she was in.

I've only seen Brother and then I couldn't stop watching it. I really liked how it was sort of a naked pyschopathic fable. I couldn't figure out from the names in the credits who was the main character, exactly, so I went and looked up Takeshi's bio. It felt ... weird. I was almost fearful of seeing any more of his flicks.

Actually, the movie came first. Director William Friedkin had heard some of their stuff and sought them out for the job. They also had a song on the Breakfast Club soundtrack, where the kids are running around the hallways of the school trying to get back to the library before they're noticed to be missing.

I'm not one of those who think 2001 is the perfect flick by a long shot, but: one of the things I've always found intriguing about it is its complete lack of any kind of romantic subplot or background character. Most movies, even man movies, at least hint at one.

No, there are some real European space efforts. They've been building their own version of GPS, among other things, and they are partners in ISS. Basically, they took all of the space work from individual EU members and brought them under one agency for a collective 'Mouse That Roared' set of goals.

Never saw Field of Dreams and never will. Besides Kevin Kostner (one of THE most overrated actors of all time), I hate baseball. Two of my very favorite movies are on the list: Back to the Future (which I remember seeing in the theatre when I was really little) and Casablanca which happens to be my all-time favorite movie ever. Rocky's great but I prefer Rocky II.

You know, The Year of Living Dangerously is about Jakarta right before Barky the Dog-Eater moved there. I used to tell people to watch it to get an idea of the environment he grew up in. It's weird, but I've never seen anyone else, anywhere, connect up Barky with that movie.

And it was such a great movie about such a disgusting and chaotic place that was as far removed from America as one could imagine. Of course, by the time Barky and Stanley got there the coup had failed, Stanley's faves - the commies - were fingered for it and mercilessly beaten down, which must have driven poor Stanley crazy. You can see where Barky's twisted and deranged personality was formed and why. It all becomes so obvious.

I know Aragorn is rather beta in the films (which always annoys me since in the books he's alpha and not at all indecisive), but the film has manly themes of fighting for your country, nobleness, bravery, and sacrifice; graphic depiction of war; love, death; and for techies it has terrific special f/x.

Which is odd to me since the films are a lot like WWII epics. Especially coming to theatres right after 9/11, they were the perfect analogy to what we were/are facing: Good vs. Evil, West vs. East (the Haradrim are symbolically Muslims -- Tolkien knew what would eventually happen) with manly men fighting the battles (with the exception of Eowyn); men roughing it in the wilderness; big, loud, ugly cave trolls, orcs, Urak-Hai; militaries facing off in war; disembodied heads being used as weapons they are certainly NOT chick-flicks or girly.

I understand why it seems as though they should be guy flicks, but - to my mind (others may well disagree with me) - the sort of fantasy stories/flicks like the Tolkien stuff are major, major chick flicks - almost Ghost level of chick flickatude (I loved Ghost, but it's just not a guy movie). Most guys just don't go for that particular sort of fantasy stuff. The elves and hobbits and the rest sort of kill it all and just the general fantasy nature of it doesn't jive with (my concept) of a guy flick.
Like I said, perhaps I'm just out of sync with other guys on this (I've never had a discussion with any guy about a Tolkien story) but I've never considered Tolkien stories to be anything but romantic stories chicks die for. My fifth grade teacher read us Tolkien - the Hobbit. Sort of the woman's impression of a guy flick.
Just my impression of it.

I'll have to disagree.
LOTR's primary themes were built around things like courage, friendship, duty and honor. He wasn't writing a metaphor on anything like what he perceived as the evils as industrialization. Hell, he wasn't writing any metaphors at all which he states in the preface.
If his main characters reflect Tolkien's own enjoyment of nature I wouldn't take that as any sort of commentary.

Take a good long look at the two sides. The good guys deal in magic and crafting by muscle power. The bad guys create machinery, even to the extent of manufacturing their main battle troops: the orcs. Saruman's main corruption was becoming a tech geek instead of staying pure.
University dons didn't exactly live in the real world then or now. But Tolkien had a sense that the major conflicts of his lifetime were so much more terrible than anything before them because of what industrial might had made possible. What he chose to ignore was that it wasn't a one-sided thing.

Checking back in wayyyyyyy late........here in the Magnolia State it's all over the news about the French Consulate presenting a local WWII vet with the Legion d'honneur for participating in the liberation of France. Apart from how cool and touching it was to see that (the ceremony took place before the congregation of the little Northeast Mississippi the vet attends), it was also of note because the French had originally intended to hand out a whole bunch of these to les Americains, and the process got snagged up with the end of the war and folks more interested in returning home than collecting decorations.
Even though it's a bit late in the game, they're trying to rectify this, so if any of you know a vet who served in France from D-Day onwards through VE Day, it could be worthwhile to contact your nearest Frog Consulate or Embassy and see if they qualify. It's a recognition these guys richly merit, and would likely mean quite a bit to them and their families.

I'm not saying you couldn't make a case for these interpretations, I'm saying it's a mistake to attribute your own interpretations as being Tolkien's intent.

Intersting discussion on LOTR. I'll say this: the themes are grand and high-minded and also include politics -- Sauron is evil because he's a totalitarion dictator/Satan and, with that prying eye of his, he's like the State/Big Brother. As someone put it above, he wants to enslave. The good guys are all about FREEDOM and LIBERTY.
And yes, I would think any movie with Liv in it is a guy flick, lol, I have a "girl-crush" on her myself!

Robert - not exactly my point, not even in other words. I was arguing that Tolkien's primary motivation in writing LOTR was to establish a setting in which Elvish, Orcish, and other of his lovingly-created languages could plausibly exist and have a real-world resonance. That is, Tolkien the Philologist takes precedence over Tolkien the Social Critic, or Tolkien the Moralist, or whatever other labels you prefer.
Beyond that, I was suggesting that one could profitably look more to Tolkien's longing for his youth in the Edwardian Era (mediated by his immersion in the horrors of the Trenches) and his misplaced idealism for the Middle Ages to explain the elements of his creation rather than debate pastoral versus industrial themes.
But this thread is on life support, so I'm out and leave the last word to others.
