It Came From The Senate: Rise of the Filibuster
Here's a cool little chart showing the rise of the filibuster (and cloture votes) over time.
And what really stands out is the fact that regular filibusters are a very recent phenomenon - with the vast majority happening since the 1975 rule change reducing the cloture requirement from 2/3 to 3/5.
And note that 'filibusters' these days are really just mere filibuster threats - since no one actually stands and talks for 21 hours anymore - which I view as a form of pansy-ass cheating.
Interestingly the filibuster itself was a historical quirk of the rules never envisioned by the founders:
In 1806, the Senate, on the advice of Aaron Burr, tried to clean up its rule book, which was thought to be needlessly complicated and redundant. One change it made was to delete something called "the previous question" motion. That was the motion senators used to end debate on whatever they were talking about and move to the next topic. Burr recommended axing it because it was hardly ever used. Senators were gentlemen. They knew when to stop talking.
That was the moment the Senate created the filibuster. But nobody knew it at the time. It would be three more decades before the first filibuster was mounted - which meant it was five decades after the ratification of the Constitution. "Far from being a matter of high principle, the filibuster appears to be nothing more than an unforeseen and unintended consequence of the elimination of the previous question motion from the rules of the Senate," Bondurant writes.

Bookworm has a theory on why Obama suddenly turned into a Kenyan when he started applying to colleges and stayed one when he began publishing books.
Now that we know that Obama marketed himself to publishers as a Kenyan, though, we're beginning to suspect that the papers hide, not only academic mediocrity, but the same Kenyan identity Obama was using to market himself in the publishing world. The question, of course, is why would Obama pretend to be African? After all, when it came to college admissions, wasn't being black good enough for affirmative action purposes?Obama's problem, though, was that he came of age at a very specific time in the annals of affirmative action. To appreciate this, you have to know that Obama, who graduated from high school in 1979, must have started looking at colleges in 1978.
When it comes to college admissions, 1978 isn't just any year. It's a very special year. It was the year that the Supreme Court decided Regents of the University of California v. Bakke (1978 ) 438 U.S. 265.
Bakke is the case where the Supreme Court narrowly ruled that pure race-based admissions were unconstitutional. And for a year or three afterwards the entire college affirmative action structure was thrown up in the air.
With that decision, Obama, who was a self-confessed slacker in high school, suddenly lost his e-ticket to a good college. He couldn't know then (nor would it have mattered) that the various concurrences in this deeply divided opinion would eventually open the door to colleges and universities making race a "factor" in admission, so much so that this "factor-ness" eventually created a whole new quota system.
My best guess is that, denied an opportunity to use quota systems to parlay a lousy academic record into a quality college admission, Obama searched around for other means of bypassing his academic failings. It was this search that led him to announce that he was Kenyan.
When the going gets tough, the clever become 'the other'. Which particular flavor depends on how high your cheekbones are and how dark your skin is. And how little integrity you have.

Man Steals Own Bicycle Back After Spotting it on Craigslist
So someone stole Danny Lesh's bike and the next day he found it listed on Craigslist. The police wouldn't help him so he set up a little sting himself:
After haggling over the Craigslist price, Lesh says, he asked for a test ride. The vendor agreed, and Lesh pedaled around the block back to the waiting cab. He tossed the Cannondale in the trunk and rode off. The vendor called about half an hour later, demanding Lesh return the bike and threatening to notify the police himself, though it appears that call never materialized.
A friend of mine in L.A. once had similar situation happen to him. He sold a motorcycle to a guy and dutifully mailed in the DMV change-of-owner form. But the buyer never registered the bike and then started regularly getting parking tickets all over Studio City which all came to my friend since he was still the owner of record.
Well after a few months of fighting the DMV and courts over the tickets, he noticed a pattern in where and when the tickets were being issued. So he and his brother began prowling the area keeping an eye out for the bike. And sure enough after a few days they finally found it - parked illegally of course. So they rolled it up right into their truck and took it home. And they never heard another word from the guy or the police.

We repo'd a friend's stolen bike in Tucson.
it was a total improvised op. There was a brief car chase. A foot chase. A bar fight... In the end, kid got his bike back and the thief got beat with a pool ball before he received a ride to jail from the cops.

I believe Bakke only affected admissions at public colleges. Private schools could still have discrimination -- oops -- affirmative action admissions.
Therefore, Obama using the back-door at Oxy and Harvard should have been okay.

Speaking of regional sayings, my Dad, raised in the Tennessee-Virginia-Carolinas area (Grandpa was a preacher and moved a lot), occassionally tells the tale of when he first met my Ohio-raised mother's parents. the meeting wasn't going particularly well, IIRC, and so Dad decided to tell a funny story, to wit:
There were once five crows that were flying along and saw a prune pie laid out on a windowsill to cool, so they flew down and ate it right up before the farmer's wife noticed them. Them they all flew off a little bit and perched on the handle of one of those old-fashioned water-pumps . After a few minutes one of them took off, and flew north for about a hundred yards, and then, boom, fell out of the sky, dead as a doornail. The other crows took note of this, and one of the remaining four took flight immediately, took off and flew south in the opposite direction as fast as it could go. It got a hundred yards, and, boom, it fell to the ground dead. the remaining crows saw this, and two also took flight, one going west, the other east. They too got only about a hundred yards before they fell out of the sky dead. the last crow, still sitting there, decided that his only choice was to go straight up, so he took off and climbed higher and higher, until he got about a hundred yards above the ground, and them immediately fell dead. the moral of the story: Don't fly off the handle when you are full of prunes!

Well, first of all (and thanks for asking), asthma kitteh is almost done with ALL of her medications, which is so awesome and I'm just hoping the slash marks on my forearm don't scar (not that anyone really gives a shit what I look like at my age)
Friend Karen started her chemo today, we are waiting to see how it went, but I doubt she is her usual perky self right now.
Law factory is just utter annoying bullshit, 'nuf said.

I missed that melt-down from a couple of days ago. That's why I love the HQ.
On the job hunting front, I had a call waiting for me at home from a company wanting to schedule a second interview! First interview last week seemed to go pretty good and one of the interviewing engineers told me that I had an impressive resume'. I was favorably impressed: the production floor was busy but they didn't have a bunch of rubbish and debris strewn around.
Wish me luck; looking for a job is f*ckin' depressing.

Been there - I know it is hard but you have to just keep plugging away. One thing that helped me was to start looking at interviews as practice for the job I would get. And I'm pretty sure each interview I did get better at - until I finally did get the good offer at a company I wanted to work for.
Remember to hit up all your contacts - you never know who might be looking to fill a position.

I just called the credit card company, and got her card cancelled (we didn't know if it was her card or my card, or both). The representative checked, and it was her card only.
(no huge deal ... about $40 total in charges, and I can probably get that back).
Serious question: which one of the various and sundry identity/credit card theft outfits would you morons recommend? I noticed that Farmer's insurance (which I have) offers it, and I'll be meeting with them next week (for other issues).
This is a bank credit/debit card, and we do most of our banking and bill payments online.

jwb, my whole purse was stolen last October. I called all the cards and banks and stuff within hours and contacted the credit bureaus (you only have to do one, they share, and put a 90-day alert on your credit, which you can extend, but it's a hassle). Did nothing further, never had a problem.

You're right, that was way worse. And people were all "get the LifeLock." But, the best defense you can have against being robbed is to take all your cards, driver's license, insurance, credit cards, all of it, lay it all on the copier at work, flip 'em over, copy the back side, and keep it someplace you can lay your hands on it immediately if you are compromised. Then just pop a cold frosty one, stay up late, make your calls and be done with it.

The Iliad gives Andromache of Troy a real character. Same with the Odyssey toward Penelope. Herodotus - writing after, but independent of, the Bible - also has plenty of strong female characters. Good heavens, Sappho wrote a whole poetry-compilation by herself.
And that's just the Greeks in their literature. Hittite and Roman law both offered a wide range of rights to women: Hittite queens retained their authority after the king died, Roman women owned property and ran businesses, both Hittites and Romans had female priests, and on and on.
Let's not chest-thump TOO much about the Bible.

The Torah predated the Greeks by centuries - a millenium or more by certain counts. Not including the Micaenians (sp? grrr) ... I don't know if you include them as "Greeks".
Interestingly, The Hittites were totally forgotten by history, recorded only in the Torah. People didn't believe that the Hittites had even existed until some time in the 18th century(?) - something like that - when archaeologists found Hatushi or Hatussa or whatever their main city was called. Stories of the Hittites were regarded as nothing but Biblical fables. Kinda neat, I always thought.
Not to take anything away from the Greeks or Romans who were as impressive as all hell. There was little on Earth to ever compare with the explosion of human genius among the ancient Greeks.

I don't think they did anything wrong. Everyone should have known (1/100th of due diligence would have been enough) that it was total bullshit.
But, if they hadn't raised the float by so much they could have easily supported the price. It was the extra shares that made it too heavy to support (or prop-up, if you prefer).
I think the Fecesbook investors have nothing to complain about outside of NASDAQ's trading problems, which were absolutely inexcusable and should serve to bankrupt NASDAQ.
But, like the greedy shits who thought they deserved the peak value of their sham Enron stock (which was never real) they Fecesbook assholes will probably get money from all sorts.

Suppose something like 3rd Voice was resurrected but worked only with say ummm....FaceBook pages, and you injected the occasional ad into the commentary scroll to generate some revenue. It would be like tossing gasoline onto the Facebook conflagrations that go on now, because some FB page owner would have no control over the 3rd party commentary.
Of course all the FB users would sign up instantly so they could deface and retaliate against each other or offer support to their friends pages...
...PROFITS? Wouldn't need a huge expensive data center since the whole deal is text based. Initially a few T1 lines could probably handle it.

It would be interesting to find out. But, whatever the problem was, it was totally inexcusable on NASDAQ's part. However, it is interesting to note that much the same sort of problem just occurred with the BATS IPO a few months ago (not on NASDAQ). AAPL even had to halt trading a bit because of some effects of that screw up.

liberal logic in action: Linear, No Threshold (LNT)
LNT is the idiotic "scientific" concept that something is deadly at some high dose then it is deadly all the way down to zero on a linear (straight) line. It just takes longer or kills a smaller percentage of those exposed.
Mercury poisoning, along with all the other dangerous metals is a classic example. The human body requires small amounts of many otherwise poisonous metals (not mercury of course). In the case of mercury, it is essentially harmless to the touch. There are also (at least) two general forms of mercury, one is imminently harmful, the other is pretty benign. EPA makes no differentiation.
With the EPA and LNT water must be banned. Same for oxygen. It is a scientific fact that too rich an oxygen percentage will cause oxygen poisoning. Too much water (100%) in the atmosphere will kill you. They have to be banned under LNT. Liberal logic on display.
