Star City in Pictures

If you want to go visit the International Space Station these days, the only way is through Baikonur. In fact Russia and China are the only countries currently that are capable of launching humans into orbit.

Baikonur, Russia's primary space launch facility since the 1950s, is the largest in the world, and supports multiple launches of both manned and unmanned rockets every year. With the U.S. manned space program currently on hold, Baikonur is now the sole launching point for trips to the ISS.

s_b10_00516263

But before you get too depressed the good news is that privately-owned SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket was successfully launched on Wednesday and is on track to dock at the ISS tomorrow and deliver supplies.

And if you were wondering why it's taking so long to get there, well the answer is that all approaching ships must pass a series of tests:

No craft is allowed near the ISS without a battery of tests to show that the crew is in control and the capsule won't crash into the station, so the flight will be marked by a series of such demonstrations by SpaceX, such as testing the Dragon's GPS system and showing off its ability to veer away from the station if the docking procedure were to go awry.

...As the capsule moves closer to the station, the tests come faster. The laser-radar range finding needs to be tested, as does the capsule's ability to accelerate and brake on command. As it passes these tests, the SpaceX capsule is allowed to go to incrementally closer hold points. Finally, the Dragon will be allowed to enter the hallowed Keep Out Sphere, an imaginary circle drawn 566 feet around the station. Dragon will stop at just 98 feet from ISS, hold, and-if the final docking is given a "go"-proceed to just 32 feet from the fragile, irreplaceable space station.

And Scotty has finally made it into space. Longtime ONTers will also know why he had to use a hand double during transporter scenes.

A Word From Your Ewok Sponsor

The whole Brétt Kìmberlin episode is no joking matter so please don't make it any easier for BK to find a pretext to sue ace by making gratuitously nasty comments about him:

Now, when he eventually does sue me, I am of course counterclaiming for everything he might still have, as well as having a special master appointed to keep track of any payouts to him from his, um, charities, so that any judgment is satisfied (and not evaded, as a previous victim judgment was).

But understand this: I am going to be sued, and my life is going to be one of constant harassment and intimidation and fear.

Please do not put me in a worse position than I've chosen to be for the sake of some silly blogwar joke.

This is not a blogwar. This is not Amanda Marcotte. Amanda Marcotte does not write lists of people to be murdered.

Liberals Choose More Conservative Names?

And conservatives choose trendier ones according to BabyNameWizard.com:

Styles of baby names, it seems, are nearly as different in various parts of the country as voting habits. "There is an enormous red state and blue state divide on names," says Laura Wattenberg, founder of BabyNameWizard.com and author of The Baby Name Wizard, which claims to be "the expert guide to baby name style."

But this doesn't play out the way you might expect. More progressive communities, Wattenberg says, tend to favor more old-fashioned names. Parents in more conservative areas come up with names that are more creative or androgynous.

But later she offers an explanation for the difference:

The reason for more outlandish-sounding names cropping up in conservative quarters is simple, Wattenberg says. Women in red states tend to have their first children earlier than women in blue states. A 23-year-old mom is more likely to come up with something out of the ordinary than one who is 33.

6 Ridiculous Lies You Believe About the Founding of America

Well not so much 'lies' as fibs and misinformation that live on because they make a much better narrative-compatible story.

There's a pretty important detail our movies and textbooks left out of the handoff from Native Americans to white European settlers: It begins in the immediate aftermath of a full-blown apocalypse. In the decades between Columbus' discovery of America and the Mayflower landing at Plymouth Rock, the most devastating plague in human history raced up the East Coast of America. Just two years before the pilgrims started the tape recorder on New England's written history, the plague wiped out about 96 percent of the Indians in Massachusetts.

In the years before the plague turned America into The Stand, a sailor named Giovanni da Verrazzano sailed up the East Coast and described it as "densely populated" and so "smoky with Indian bonfires" that you could smell them burning hundreds of miles out at sea. Using your history books to understand what America was like in the 100 years after Columbus landed there is like trying to understand what modern day Manhattan is like based on the post-apocalyptic scenes from I Am Legend.

And then there's epic story of Squanto who much more than just some helpful local guide:

Squanto had been kidnapped from Cape Cod as a child and sold into slavery in Spain. He escaped like the boy Maximus he was, and spent his better years hoofing it west until he hit the Atlantic Ocean. Deciding that swimming back to America would take too much time, he learned enough English to convince someone to let him hitch a ride to "the New World." When he finally got back home, he found his town deserted. The plague had swept through two years before, taking everyone but him with it.

And yeah yeah I know that Iron Eyes Cody wasn't really an indian either.

High tech for consumers sure was expensive back then. Now most of us carry video cameras in our pockets capable of broadcasting an event for about the same price.

The Largest Wave Ever Surfed

Garrett McNamara, a 44-year-old Hawaii pro surfer caught this wave off the coast of Nazaré Portugal in November 2011. It was 78 feet high and the Guinness Book of World Records has confirmed this is a new record for the largest wave ever surfed.

Wanted: Senior Torturer

"The government of a Middle Eastern state is recruiting a senior torturer to work in a well-equipped prison. Our ideal candidate would be prepared to inflict extreme pain and suffering. Candidates will be expected to inspire a small but enthusiastic team."

Well with all the régimes falling in the middle east it's no surprise that there's been a shakeup in the excruciation industry as well. But in chaos there's always opportunities opening up for go-getters who aren't squeamish and are willing to learn new skills.

Had my second interview with a company and I'm pretty sure I'm still in the ranks of the underemployed.  Met with the VP of Manufacturing and the first words out of his mouth were, "So, you still can't find a job, huh?"  He later on said that he thought it was "suspicious" that I didn't want to stay in law enforcement.  He then wrapped up by telling me that they decided they wanted someone with a 2-year engineering technology degree rather than a 4-year mechanical engineering degree.

What really pissed me off was that they wasted my time.  If they didn't want to hire me, why call me back in for a second interview that had to be scheduled right away?  It was a very strange experience.

90 It depends on what you mean. The disease arrived with Columbus and spread like wildfire throughout the western hemisphere. And while much of the die off occurred in North America before it was colonized, the pathogens came from Europe.

Posted by: runninrebel at May 24, 2012 10:45 PM (N/1Dm)

Yeah it's pretty clear that the plague arrived in North America sometime around when the European starting regularly sailing there.

Of course the Indians returned the favor by giving the Europeans syphilis which was fairly deadly when it spread through Europe. Today's version is but a shadow of the original disease.

---------------------The Vikings didn't do all that well simply because there weren't very many of them - I don't think that there were ever more than a hundred or so in Vinland. The author doesn't take into account differences in technology (i.e., a more advanced technology) and socio-economic and political developments that drove seventeenth-century emigration. He doesn't mention how much disagreement there is over Pre-Columbian Indian numbers, the difference between old-growth and new-growth forest (the earthworm may be a European import, which is why those original forests were park-like- no earthworms, harder for undergroth to spring up), ad nauseum. Really bad article.

@102, 104

I kind of got the impression that the two engineers that interviewed me last week wanted to hire me.  Then apparently one of this company's junior engineers bailed to go to another company for $10K more and broke the bad news a couple of days ago.  Now the owner of the company is pissed and changed his mind about hiring mechanical engineers with 4-year degrees.

This is a privately owned company. When we got to the issue of money, frankly I was shocked at how far below the average salary for an entry-level engineer they talked about.  Like I said, they actually want technicians, not engineers.  That's OK, it's their company, but they need to define their needs better.

As to the species of exercises, I advise the gun.
While this gives moderate exercise to the body,

168 That "Cracked" article is pure bullshit.

I used to own a book published in 1584 that claimed the Welsh came to the New World before Columbus.

It offered as much evidence as most other such claims, i.e. nothing concrete. Columbus may not have been first, but it was his voyages that got Europe interested in colonizing a "New World".  Not the Vikings or anyone else.

If 20 million Indian died of smallpox, why didn't the European settlers who went there also die of smallpox?

If the local Indian populations were reduced to nearly nothing, then why did a smallpox epidemic carry off a whole lotta Indians in Mass. and RI a few years after the settlers arrived?

If 20 million died just before arrival of Europeans in the early 1600's, why didn't the early settlers come upon hundreds of ruined and abandoned cities and towns?

If the early settlers admired the Indians so much, why were there Indians around to admire?  After all, if 96% of them died of smallpox,  wouldn't the survivors be far and few between, with their culture and polities crushed by smallpox?

One claim is that two Indians arrived in Holland in 60BC.  Its source is a book that claimed two Indians arrived in Holland in 60BC. That book cites no source.

A purported myth: "Even after he landed in America, Columbus didn't realize he'd discovered an entire continent because maps of America were far less reliable back then"

Huh?   Unless you mindlessly ascribe to the forgery called the Vinland Map, there were no maps of America before Europeans made them.

The article claims that the Indians had cut down all the forests in the east just before they died off from smallpox, leaving the European settlers with cleared land to grow crops on.

Hah!  New Englanders know that the early settlers had to dig out and carry away bazillions of tons of rock deposited by retreating glaciers in order to make the land tillable.  You can see the old stone fences all over the rural landscapes throughout the Northeast.

And so on.

Go read the comments, and weep for the fast-approaching Idiocracy.

So, although ebola zaire had a 90% mortality, it only affected a small number of people-around 150, and then stopped. It apparently doesn't live long outside its host, which is a blessing. Marburg and Lassa fever are far more deadly, since they don't kill as quickly, have time to jump, and are still hemorraghic.

While the initial usage of “fap” was strictly limited to describing male masturbation amongst bros, the term has since become synonymous with act of masturbation as whole, regardless of gender. 215 GGE, you can do a super basic reloading setup for about $250 or so with one of the Lee single-stage press kits and a few add-ons. You won't be doing match-quality ammo, but for basic blasting ammo, no problem. You do have to be careful with the Lee quick locking bushings though, best to use the o-ring Lee locking nuts with whatever dies you use. I recently ruined my first Lee press while trying to set it up with some Lyman dies. The spring-loaded locking bolt peened and stuck flush with the press while tightening down the die in the bushing. Grrrr. Gave me an excuse to buy a Lyman turret press though. 'sup jackwagons

Powder runs 150-160 for 8 pounds which is enough to load 1000 rounds and still have enough to make a pretty good mess if it isn't stored properly.

Yep, all right handers. The pickup and the delivery van came from England as a matched set, the wagon was original unrestored (it was his grandmother's car) and the sedan he got here in the US. Mid 50's, I didn't catch all the years exactly.

228 GGE, you can do a super basic reloading setup for about $250 or so with one of the Lee single-stage press kits and a few add-ons. You won't be doing match-quality ammo, but for basic blasting ammo, no problem. Posted by: IllTemperedCur at May 24, 2012 11:40 PM (Rhie+) Wha? No reason why not, it's just slower. The biggest issue you'll have as far as match-quality is measuring charges (amount of powder). I hate balance scales with an almost indescribably fashion, most cheap digital scales are not reliable. The dies are fine, it's not like the press is going to be so far out as to throw concentricity significantly off (compared to a Lyman or a Redding or whatever). The bigger more expensive Lees take more tweaking than they should, but the single-stage is comparable to anything else. Also I've never had a problem with the "Breech Lock" quick change bushings, except fussing a little because they are kind of tight. I don't have ditch-digger's hands, I inherited piano-player's hands. So fussy brute-force hand tools and I don't get along real well. The problem with reloading is that you don't save money. You *may* shoot more, but you won't spend less money - if you do "save" any, you'll almost certainly spend it on more/better tools and components.

I've been thinking the same thing, I just haven't made the jump yet. I don't shoot the T30 enough to bother with it, mostly cause the ammo is a buck fifteen just for FMJ target rounds, but if I reloaded the ammo wouldn't be as expensive.

On the other hand, it's cheaper to buy hunting rounds for the Mosin rather than reload for it.

232 200 Euro's did die of smallpox in the new world.

Yes, but not nearly at rates of 96%. (I should have made that clearer.) Twenty people on the Mayflower died of it, for example, and other outbreaks in the early colonies followed. .   Europeans likely had a higher level of immunity than the Indians , the former having been exposed to outbreaks of the disease for many hundreds of years.

As another poster has noted, a very high mortality rate tends to burn out quickly, making a genocidal outbreak sweeping the East Coast highly unlikely.

Way I see it, the 20 million dead Indians conveys a far better "narrative" to blame Europeans for having invaded and destroyed an indigenous population.   But the fact is, AmerIndians were hunter/gatherers and slash-and-burn Paleolithic farmers, livelihoods requiring large territories to survive in.  Twenty million Indians would have been unable to range freely and support themselves.   Slash-and-burn requires continually moving populations, as the land become exhausted.

Bottom line: too little space, too many Indians.  Didn't happen.

Then it's not really "work". Lots of folks price their time like it's a chore that has to be endured in order to indulge in their shooting hobby. 251 Part of the "reloading cost saving" is people's faulty memory. Ten years ago (approximately) it was dirt cheap because we had a ammo shortage but not a component shortage. Four years ago we had a component shortage but not an ammo shortage, so it reversed itself. Now metals prices are higher (not peak but high), so it's kind of "meh." I'd totally reload an expensive caliber (.338 Lapua costs as much as .50 BMG - a lot), but 9mm? Eh... People were buying 5.56x39 (Russian) like crazy a couple of years ago, but it's no longer dirt cheap. Et cetera. Mostly do it if you need the hobby and you want to make something for yourself. Unless you have severe ADD, in which case forget it. You have to be methodical or shit may blow up on you.

Re: Syphilis and contagious disease

There is some evidence that syphilis was a European disease long before the New World 'discovery'. I've looked for the link but can't find it - there was an archeological find with syphilitic-type bone lesions circa: Cesearian Rome.

In my childhood my parents knew a Latvian pathologist who told  me (yes, I remember - that's why I noticed the archeology report) that syphilis explains why so many historical greats started showing signs of mental instability at about the middle-50's age. He called it syphilitic paresis.

VDH (I think in 'Culture and Conflict') discusses the issue of Cortez and ensemble surviving contagious disease being due to the comparatively advanced medical knowlege (esp. quarantine) vs. the native populations reliance on shamanistic superstition.

Brush or bore snake to get anything out of the barrel, grease or something similar (if you have it, otherwise just gun lube) on the mechanism, light lube / protective oil on the outside metal. I don't know that much about the 556, most guns have their peculiarities about how they like to run. There are, for example, many regimens for AR-15s but sod all if mine don't just like the occasional spray of Royal Purple auto oil on the bolt carrier. http://sigarms556.com/ Look under "technical discussions," I'll bet they have lots of info.

355 so money is not the key to happiness, just my opinion. Posted by: lou's a girl at May 25, 2012 01:55 AM (fHyXI) Money won't buy you happiness, but it sure lets you choose your misery. My opinion is that if you grow up rich, especially a child of people who grow up rich, you're lucky to be stable because your decisions are so distorted. But some people do come out of that doing well and happy, so it's not the only factor. I think were I rich I would not *raise* my kids like uber-rich people, I would consciously insulate them from some of that, and then when they'd grown up they could have access to more of that (unless they were already irresponsible). Partly it's because some of the ways people *get* rich are dependent on obsessions or neuroses, so some of these people had a pathology that served them well getting money but not being happy. You never hear about the rich people that die of old age in a comfortable big house, you just hear about the ones that eat a $20,000 English Double 10-gauge. There are a number of celebs that never seem to make the gossip pages, etc.

And wish I could see Ireland,or Australia, or anywhere fun, but aint gonna let the tsa do a pap smear on me if ya know what I mean. So a camping trip to ut or a road trip to Co or winning a little money on a dime is ok with me.

Emulators are emulators, I only seem to have a problem with those on things like Android, where it's the *emulator* port that's bad. Then again, maybe I should try to get good at this stuff so I can patch *NEW* games that are terrible ports, sheesh.

It worked okay in Texas because while a Texas Democrat is as dirty as a mud farmer's socks, they're not as far left (ore weren't in the 90s) as the national party. They screwed him repeatedly, starting on day one, not just after 2006. I think he really believed he had a duty to represent all Americans and not just his party, and those words don't even have meaning to Democrats.

413 Kimberlin should not have been released in the first place, and unfortunately local law enforcement doesn't seem to think it's their job to correct that. He at least needs to be up for perjury, harassment, stalking (and/or cyber-stalking), wrongful prosecution, and frivolous/malicious use of the legal system. One wonders what his donors/employers think he does with his time.

420 Brett Kimberlin Update:

Research by me.

1. As to no entrys in Wikipedia (this has been mentioned a few times and a search shows little about Mr. Kimberlin on the usual sites.)

Wikipedia deleted articles about Brett Kimberlin on 13 Sept 2011 and on 14 March 2010 for being unsourced or an attack page.

Notes by 3 current editors discussing the lack of an entry have stated: "I've had a couple of emails from right-wing bloggers, but nothing from anyone I'd trust to write a neutral article" to another editor (I have only user names which isn't very useful so I've left them off)
Next they discuss the book about Mr. Kimberlin as a resource for a rewritten article: Mark Singer, Citizen K: The deeply weird American journey of Brett Kimberlin, Knopf, 1996.
And mention that an article about the Speedway Bombings might also be useful as most of references to Mr. Kimberlin point to that series of events. (duh)

So apparently Wikipedia got some e-mails and realized they had assumed that Mr. Kimberlin being a left winger like themselves (wikipedia has a known left wing bias) had maybe screwed up by deleting the articles about him. (quite possibly because of a complaint by himself)

2. Mr Kimberlin is apparently so confidant of himself and of Conservative sense of propriety to let his phone number and address be listed in the White Pages.

I have that address and number but since I can't verify that it IS the Mr. Kimberlin who is the focus of our efforts, I will not post it here.

However feel free to try and locate it yourself, it's not that hard. It's public knowledge that he lives in Betheseda, MD and his middle initial is C. (that from court records) so anyone curious can locate him as I did in about 2 minutes.

I think Mr. Kimberlin may have stuck his hand in a wasps nest.

425 This is not a blogwar. This is not Amanda Marcotte. Amanda Marcotte does not write lists of people to be murdered. That has to be one of the nicest things I've ever read about Amanda. As for Kìmberlin, remember you're just speculating, or posting your opinion. In my opinion, if he just left people alone and went about his business, I'd have never heard of him, or remembered the Speedway bombings. That's all on you, buddy.

426 There was some major BS in the cracked article, along with some lacking information. for example, Squanto didn't just get home. He was helped by an Englishman who took him on as a servant and later helped him get home. And that stuff about the Iroquois confederacy influencing the American Constitution? Sorry, we had all the influence we needed from the traditions of English government and the writings of European philosophers. Besides, the Algonquins welcomed the Pilgrims because the Iroquois like to raid them and take their women and property, may as well say we learned that from the Indians, no?
