Well since the cobloggers have already done such a good job covering Memorial Day topics and I'm kinda tired after cleaning all day, tonight's going to be mostly a movie night.
And tonight's feature is The Andromeda Strain (1971). The original good one - not that POS that appeared a few years ago.
After a US government satellite crashes near the town of Piedmont, New Mexico, a microbe attached to the satellite kills all but two of the town's inhabitants - a sixty-two-year-old man and an infant. Some of those who died show signs of having first gone mad. The mechanism of death is massive clotting and granulation of every drop of blood in their bodies. An elite scientific team takes the satellite into a secret underground laboratory in the Nevada desert, known as the Wildfire Complex, in order to study it. The new life form is assigned the code name Andromeda. Within a couple of days the microbe mutates into a form that degrades synthetic rubber gaskets and thus escapes containment.
This was based on the excellent book, The Andromeda Strain, which was Michael Crichton's first novel which he wrote while in Harvard medical school. Even though though the movie and book are now over 40 years old other than a some dated technology and references it still holds up quite well. Crichton knew his science and really did have a good vision of where technology was going.
One thing I liked about the book was that it included graphs, print outs, and even had footnotes. I tried one time to track down the footnoted references but either they were old enough that the university library no longer kept them or they were just made up as part of the book itself.
The film is very well done and stays very faithful to the book. In particular the editing is very tight so the story moves right along, never drags, and doesn't waste time doing needless exposition. I also liked the fact that the scientists were actually smart (as opposed to movie-smart where they act like jerks and spout gibberish) but also made mistakes and went down blind-alleys at times.
It's also a refreshing change from modern movies to see the military characters treated as smart and competent as well and not lazily made out to be the enemy e.g. Outbreak. Here the real enemy is the bug itself and it's a race to see whether the humans can find its weakness using the two survivors in time to prevent annihilation.
And here is part one of 13:
And here are the rest:
Hat tip to Harvey at IMAO for reminding about this movie.
The Modern Pauline Kael Syndrome
Pauline Kael was the influential film critic for New Yorker from 1968 to 1991 who supposedly stated after Richard Nixon's 1972 landslide victory, "that she 'couldn't believe Nixon had won', since no one she knew had voted for him." Well it turns out that what she actually said was this:
I live in a rather special world. I only know one person who voted for Nixon. Where they are I don't know. They're outside my ken. But sometimes when I'm in a theater I can feel them.
Which is a more nuanced quote that shows that she lived in a bubble and was quite aware (and satisfied) that she did. Well plus ça change...here's a recent quote by New Yorker writer, John Cassidy:
In my neck of artisanal, hormone-free Brooklyn, the latest CBS News/New York Times poll, which shows Mitt Scissorhands leading "The First Gay President" by three points, landed with a nasty thud. "I can't believe he might lose," my wife said when she spotted the offending numbers on the Web. "People are really willing to vote for Mitt Romney? They hate Obama so much they'd vote for Romney?"
9 Childhood Rules Best Forgotten by Adults
Wives' tales that continue to live on...
- Never go swimming after eating.
Truth: The American Red Cross reports that there is no increased risk in cramping if you've consumed food prior to swimming. - Chocolate causes acne.
Truth: No food type causes zits, although too much of any food is not good for the body. - Eat carrots, have great vision.
Truth: I can speak to this one directly. Mom fed me so much baby carrot food that I turned jaundiced. And I've worn glasses since the 4th grade. - If you crack your knuckles, you'll get arthritis.
Truth: Not true, although my thumb joint wonders sometimes . . .
Actually carrots for good vision is a propaganda story spread by the British government during WWII to cover up the existence of radar and Engima decrypts and explain away the undue success of the RAF.

So how did a small band of herders who occasionally engaged in some light hunting-gathering become one of the most formidable fighting forces in the world in the space of 25 years? This video explains.
What is the world's oldest in-use writing system?
Turns out to be either Chinese or Hebrew depending on how carefully you define 'in-use':
Chinese writing is attested from around 1250 in the oracle bone inscriptions (all dates here are BCE, and approximate). But the near-certain origin of the alphabet, in Proto-Sinaitic and Proto-Canaanite writing, is no later than 1700. (We won't count the much older Egyptian system that inspired this alphabet.)

Yes. Now the interesting thing to consider is that Mitt is pretty much *only* getting the not-Obama factor.
If the Republicans had nominated someone who actually had an upside to voting for him outside of not-Obama, the election wouldn't be particularly close...

They are not going there to search, they are going to where a crime is being committed and are trying to stop the commission of the crime against another person. This is why police can enter a property without a warrant when someone is being held a gunpoint. It is a time is of the essence activity.

Well in this case it took some pretty amazing science on the part of a couple of researchers to actually convince the world of the cause of ulcers.
In fact, this is a text book case to bring up when someone tells you that we have a scientific consensus on global warming. This was true in regards to ulcers. And the consensus was wrong.

I voted for Romney in the primary because I believe we need to woo the True Independents. They may only comprise 5% (according to Vic) or as much as 10% (my opinion) of the electorate. But we cannot afford a So Con of the likes of Santorum to chase those votes away.

Interesting factoid (that I've heard) - Vowels as letters came about because the Greeks took the Hebrew alphabet and screwed up by mistaking certain consonants that sound like vowels at times (Ayn, Aleph, ...) and made them into vowels. Thus began the second great revolution in writing by removing the need for any strict word patterns (as Hebrew writes only consonants, which are able to be read because all Hebrew words must fall into a specific pattern and, therefore, the vowels are implied in the word and need not be written).
The other tidbit about Hebrew is well-known and goes to its age:
All human physical tools and manipulations are designed for right handers, so why is Hebrew more natural in writing to left-handers, in that it goes from right to left? Because Hebrew was designed as an etched language and right-handers etch from right to left, as opposed to writing, which is naturally done left to right.

So if the police need to ascertain whether someone is being held at gunpoint, they have go to draw up a search warrant, go find a judge, get him to approve a search warrant, then go and enforce the search warrant. In the meantime, the victim may get a bullet in their head.
So in your opinion, the police need to worry more about the constitutional right of the person who may have commited the crime instead of the life of someone who may be getting killed.

True moderates in the sense you are arguing really don't exist.
The mushy middle is made of people that don't care about politics and don't want to.
They'll vote for a Reagan, a Bush, or an Obama if they think he is "more presidential" which has nothing to do with ideology, proven ability, or platform. The one concern here from a conservative perspective is the State Media works overtime to make the Democrat seem "more presidential" so a Republican has to distinguish himself from the Democrat (eg 1980, 84, 04) to win.
It is almost axiomatic that the more you understand politics the most "partisan" or ideological you are.
So long story short, running a "moderate" doesn't work. If Romney wins, so too would Newt, Santorum, or almost any other Republican. And almost certainly, being able to differentiate themselves better, almost any other Republican would do better.

Another thing to consider - unemployment is 16-20%. The economy hasn't grown in 4 years. Inflation is running rampant.
The incumbent *should* be down by 20 points. This is Hoover territory.
The fact that an upper class liberal is surprised by close polling shows just how absurd the leftist cocoon is.
But that being said, the fact that Obama is still more likely to win then lose is jaw dropping.

They're not responding to any emergency. They're responding to an anonymous report. That doesn't give them the right to do what they are doing, especially since we all know that the penalty for wrongfully sending a SWAT team to someone's house is about nil - just as the Duke lacrosse liars (Magnum and Nyfong) suffered no serious consequences for having intentionally lied in order to put the lives of four men in serious jeopardy.
Our society runs largely on the honor code and if there is little honor left in our society and no real penalties for violating the most sacred honors, then there will be nothing left. But, as we speak, the Indonesian Imbecile and his gang break our laws and defile our culture with no worry about repercussions worse than being tossed out of office and having to suffer with only outrageously high paying jobs for leftist orgs and Ivy League shitholes.
Laws don't create societies, societies create laws. Our society, today, is not what it once was.

I've got a hearing coming up next week (don't worry, nothing criminal
I send in the paperwork and ask for the courthouse in the small town near me.
I hear nothing back.
Call them up and the answer is basically "WAIT YOU F!$*er" and a couple of weeks later I get my form in the mail...so...they lost the paperwork originally...ok...whatever.
So I make plans to go to the courthouse and everything is peachy.
Then...my mediator calls me up to say hey...where is your appointment again? Because the court schedule says your judge is in the big metro area near you...not in the small town courthouse you asked for.
WHAT THE HELL. I check it...yep...I see it too now. So they lost my paperwork, scheduled me for a different court, and didn't tell me (it is NOT on the paperwork they sent me).
The best part? The mediator tells me you've got every reason to be mad - but don't say a thing because they will screw with you if you do.
We truly have the governing class of a third world hell hole already.

Our society, today, is not what it once was.

They were responding to the address that showed up on the caller ID. His phone number was "spoofed", meaning that his address showed up as who made the call. So the cops thought he was reporting a VIOLENT crime at his home was being committed.
As for the lack ofconsequences of SWAT showing up when it is not needed, SWAT is sent because LEOs don't know what the situation is, so they err on the side of public safety.

And I'd remind you that the original SWATting call against Patterico was not an "emergency", anyway. The caller said that he had already shot his wife, so the "emergency", if it had even been true, was sometime before that.

But by calling the police to report the crime, that is an invitation for the police to come to the crime scene. Thus a warrant is not needed.

Erring on the side of safety doesn't abrogate laws against illegal search and seizure. They saw nothing and had nothing but an anonymous report.
This is the same sort of bullshit that sent a whole battalion of Texas Rangers to arrest everyone in that polygamist compound - and the court cases went on (with the kids taken away) even after they all knew that it was all based on a phony phone call (again, for which the caller suffered NOTHING).
But, if someone tries to actually threaten you and you fire a warning shot at them in many states you will find yourself in jail - like that guy in New York, IIRC, with the gang standing on his lawn threatening him and his family. Yep ...

Why don't you think a little more about what you're saying?
AN anonymous call is NOT sufficient reason to tear a house a apart, let alone break in with a SWAT team.
However, if you want the police to have such power, then you need to make sure that the penalty for making calls to kick off such actions needs to be a minimum of 30 years in jail. But, we don't have that. We don't do ANYTHING to false witnesses who put others in jeopardy of decades in jail and worse.

Okay ... so let's see what we have. A guy calls the cops to claim that he has just shot his wife. On that bit of information alone a SWAT team is sent over and all rights of people at that address are temporarily suspended so that the police can do ... whatever, based on that "admission". But, if the guy had actually shot his wife and killed her, and the state had a death penalty, then that same guy is not allowed to plead guilty in court and get his death penalty as quickly as possible.

If the guy says, in person, he didn't call, then the presumption is that he didn't call. I understand that there may well be tons of people calling the cops to claim they're going to shoot their kids and then changing their minds when the cops get there (not a SWAT team, but patrol cars) but I don't see that as being a huge loophole in our policing services.
As is often said, the road to hell is paved with good intentions.

So the police now should do call backs when responding to every call. Plus, a shooting, or a murder, just kind of strikes me as an emergency call. The cops want to make sure that the murderer doesn't decde to move on.
There was no search and siezure. There were no charges filed. The police were responding to what they thought was an emergency call.
As for the Texas thing, I don't know anything about it, but the police do make mistakes. This case was not one of those. They are responding to a potential MURDER, not polygamy, not a "little weed", but the most heinous crime that can be committed against another human.
So the guy in New York gets charged with shooting his gun at people on his lawn threatening him. So if someone says they are going to kick my ass, then I get to shoot them?

Oh my god, responding to a MURDER call leads to the fall of society. I really don't give a shit if he wants the death penalty or not, the police are responding to an emergency. Just because the caller said the person was dead doesn't mean that the person was actually dead. Only the EMTs or a doctor can be for sure about that. So in that situation, should the police wait for a search warrant?
There are consequences for making false reports. After such high profile things like this, LEOs will get involved. You may not hear about it, but they are doing the investigation behind the scenes.
Posted by: MrCaniac at May 27, 2012 08:29 PM (1grxW)
Oh i'm sure it doesn't happen often, but i think i'd rather let the cops have the ability to enter the residence in that situation than possibly have someone murdered, your rights are actually being protected, not abrogated in that situation. Now if the cops were just driving down the street and said hey, let's go into Primordial's house see and if he has anything we can bust him on, then yeah, that's the case where you're rights are being violated.

If the account is accurate, he did "fire shots into the air" which produces a danger to others unrelated to the incident. I don't quite know how to square that circle with the fact that he was in danger. Shots into the ground only, I'd just say "let him go" shots in the air, and you're potentially harming people who aren't even "bystanders."

That link was the only report that I had seen about shots in the air - it was CBS, remember. The rest say "into the ground".
Here's Jonathan Turley on it (a leftist, BTW): http://tinyurl.com/ckonedx
JHere's Grier's OWN words from another report:
Grier said the five men dared him to use the gun; and that their shouts brought another larger group of gang members in front of his house.
“He starts threatening my family, my life. ‘Oh you’re dead. I’m gonna kill your family and your babies. You’re dead.’ So when he says that, 20 others guys come rushing around the corner. And so I fired four warning shots into the grass,” Grier said.
You can look up all the reports. My mistake for picking the first link. I had assumed everyone here was well aware of this incident.

There just happens to be a secret, highly-funded government Science Team to handle one of the least likely threats. There were so many secret government Science Teams for so many purposes, for so long, that most of us just presume that the government has a secret Science Team in the real world for whatever comes up.
The continued low jinks of the CDC, to take one horrible example, fail to convince us otherwise. It's part of the background level statism we're all heir to. The worst part is that we really do have intellectual resources (and until this generation, industrial resources too) to handle the unknown better than anyone else -- and attempts to enlist all resources into government central control have greatly reduced the willingness of us "resources" to trust a request for help. We don't want to made suckers of, like those swat teams.
Imagine the scenario of the original Voyage to The Bottom movie, where a UN meeting tries to deal with the sky catching fire. Where would you stand on this? Chrichton's scientists were all in on the joke.
When new shit hits the old fan, your government does not have a buried complex in the desert, all set up to deal with it. Funding was cut to pay for midnight basketball in troubled schools. Cheyenne Mountain is empty (I was just there). In our dreams, we think it's still fully stocked.
For 35 or so years, I've been calling it the Andromeda Syndrome.

To say "he shot into the ground" doesn't imply one shot. What language do you speak? And having a bunch of MS-13 gangbangers rushing to your place while they threaten to kill you is certainly reason to fire 4 warning shots into your own lawn. That's less than one shot per 5 (not including the original scumbags who were there threatening him). He didn't endanger any of the scumbags.
