10 Things to Remember About Memorial Day
Some facts about today that you may not have known.
Memorial Day was a response to the unprecedented carnage of the Civil War, in which some 620,000 soldiers on both sides died. The loss of life and its effect on communities throughout the North and South led to spontaneous commemorations of the dead
...From the practice of decorating graves with flowers, wreaths and flags, the holiday was long known as Decoration Day. The name Memorial Day goes back to 1882, but the older name didn't disappear until after World War II. Federal law declared "Memorial Day" the official name in 1967.
General Orders No. 11 stated that "in this observance no form of ceremony is prescribed," but over time several customs and symbols became associated with the holiday.
It is customary on Memorial Day to fly the flag at half staff until noon, and then raise it to the top of the staff until sunset.
...And in 2000, Congress established a National Moment of Remembrance, which asks Americans to pause for one minute at 3pm in an act of national unity. The time was chosen because 3pm "is the time when most Americans are enjoying their freedoms on the national holiday."
Sometimes at the cost of several of their prime playing years.

Brett Kimberlin's Music Videos
Yep lying felon Kimberlin also did agit-prop music videos.
It appears that sometime around 2006, several years after Kimberlin was released from prison, he joined a band named Op-Critical. The band's music can best be described as liberal alternative rock and they claim some of it has been featured at ACLU and Amnesty International events. Their music mirrors that of other little known liberal bands who trashed bush in the later part of his presidency and would be unremarkable if it weren't for the fact that one of the guys playing guitar and singing is a violent criminal.
Given his history and MO as bomber it's pretty creepy when the video shows Kimberlin lurking around the DC subway mixed with shots of an unattended bag.
Also there's going to be a court hearing on Kimberlin's request for a 'peace order' against Aaron Walker tomorrow at 8:30am in the Rockville, MD courthouse. So if there are any morons who could attend, it would be a great show of support for Aaron.
Kimberlin, who in 1981 was sentenced to 50 years in federal prison for his Indiana bombing spree and other crimes, has requested a "peace order" against Virginia attorney Aaron Walker, who says Kimberlin tried to "frame" him on an assault charge earlier this year. The final hearing on Kimberlin's peace order request - which Walker has described as "frivolous" - is scheduled for Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. in Montgomery County District Court (191 E. Jefferson St., Rockville, Md. 20850), according to the court's official Web site
The fact that so many successful politicians are such shameless liars is not only a reflection on them; it is also a reflection on us. When the people want the impossible, only liars can satisfy them, and only in the short run. The current outbreaks of riots in Europe show what happens when the truth catches up with both the politicians and the people in the long run. Among the biggest lies of the welfare states on both sides of the Atlantic is the notion that the government can supply the people with things they want but cannot afford. Since the government gets its resources from the people, if the people as a whole cannot afford something, neither can the government. There is, of course, the perennial fallacy that the government can simply raise taxes on "the rich" and use that additional revenue to pay for things that most people cannot afford. What is amazing is the implicit assumption that "the rich" are all such complete fools that they will do nothing to prevent their money from being taxed away. History shows otherwise.
What It Looks Like When Jet Fighters Attack You
Here two Argentine A-4 Skyhawks are on an attack run on the HMS Broadsword during the Falklands War.
The A-4 Skyhawks flew just a few feet above the water to avoid radar detection as the following historical photograph, depicting Captain Pablo Carballo (on the left plane) and Lieutenant Carlos Rinke (right, barely visible below the horizon) attacking HMS Broadsword, shows.
The two aircraft released one bomb each one of those missed the target whereas the other one managed to hit the Broadsword in spite of the intense anti-aircraft fire. But the Mk.17 failed to explode.
British Army Clerics Now +3 in Melee Attacks
Clergy preparing to go to war as Army padres are training with shepherds' crooks in place of guns. Those who sign up for the Professionally Qualified Officer course at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in Surrey are given the fine-oak, 5ft crooks by senior officers to carry in drills and exercises alongside other cadets who are armed with rifles.
The Ministry of Defence said the crooks, symbols of Christian leadership, were a 'tongue-in-cheek' replacement for guns as padres are barred from carrying weapons under the Geneva Convention.
...An MoD spokesman said the trainee Army chaplains were not required to carry crooks, but it was seen as 'good form' and most of them did so with enthusiasm.
So put away those white gloves and colored liquors.
Memorial Day is upon us and with it, for seasonal drinkers at least, a return to clear spirits. But instead of a vodka-soda or a gin and tonic, how about a Negroni? As per Eric Felten's How's Your Drink, it's a rather simple cocktail: 1 ounce Campari, 1 ounce red vermouth, 1 ounce gin. "Shake with ice and strain into a cocktail glass or serve on the rocks in an Old-Fashioned glass. Add a splash of seltzer if you like and garnish with orange-slice or peel."

I have discovered another gaping hole in my education. My whole lfe I have believed the appendix to be on the lower left. I went to a convenience store and a young female worker went out for a moment to say something to a customer as she was holding her left side. She grabbed it again on her return. I asked her if she was okay a said the apppendix is on the lower left. She said she was fine. She had bumped herself on a counter but then corrected me saying the appendix was on the right side. She looked barely out of high school. Then another kid said I was thinking of the appendix rebound test. I told them I don't like being wrong, hence looking like an idiot who thinks himself informed, and thanked them for the correction. Turns out the girl had just completed some medical training and the boy has had problem with his appendix. I returned and told my wife who also said it is on the left. I went to Al Gore's useful invention to read up a bit on the appendix. Continuing education is a good thing.
Evening all!

Here in San Diego, Memorial Day ceremony! The whole event had elements of CAMPAIGN in it, but everyone was loving it because everyone said such cool things about veterans, the country, the military. Two conservative candidates for local office spoke, too.
A lot of gratitude and a general sense of . . . encouragement about the future.

Guess what, dudes, there was a fucking WAR going on! In addition to printing racist and offensive comic books, people were actually going out and SHOOTING Japanese and German soldiers. Also blowing them up, burning them, drowning them, and riddling them with shrapnel. Compared to any of that, I expect the average Japanese or German soldier could probably laugh off the most offensive comic anyone could ever devise.

I noticed a trend on TV Memorial Day items. All channels seemed to reflect on the losses on both sides of WWII. As in, the battle of Tarawa claimed 6,000 American and Japanese lives.
Frankly, on this day, I don't give half a damn about the Japanese soldiers who died. This day is about Americans who gave their lives for our freedoms.

Good evening, good people. Sad note, one of my good friends passed last night. He was a vet who lied about his age and joined the Air Force at 17, wound up in the 8th Air Force as a waist gunner in a B-17--with 2 credited kills.
His service also cost him most of his hearing, but he never complained. We swapped stories on many evenings in the back yard, never got tired of hearing how it was for them.
I understand the funeral will be with full military honors which is fitting for Ed.

Lord God, we thank you for bringing us to this place of duty. We thank you for the mission at hand.
We thank you for the honor of being entrusted to carry needed supplies to our fellow Marines.
We ask you to renew our confidence and courage for whatever challenges and obstacles await us on this combat logistics patrol.
We remember the words of Psalm 108:13, "With God we shall do valiantly; It is he who will tread down all foes."
We willingly depart friendly lines, but ask you to go with us, O Lord.
Turn all of the knowledge, skill and courage that we possess into valient virtue to tread down any enemies that would do us harm.
Keep us mindful of the great nation we serve, of our families who love and pray for us, and most of all of the strength and safety that comes from faith in You.
By your mighty power, guard and deliver us and the people of Afghanistan from evil.
In your strong and Holy Name we pray. Amen.

Hiding over there. *points*
I vaguely recall there was some kind of kerfuffle when Alice in Wonderland came out at theaters because Disney announced the dvd release date pretty much right away and it was a very very close turn around time. I think it depends on studios and on if the movie can be strung out at first run theaters.
Speaking of Battleship, I really liked it but then again it was aliens attacking things so the odds of me liking it were quite good. It's going to go into the list of movies that are considered bombs that aren't, considering that it's done around $250 million overseas already.
Speaking of aliens attacking things, I watched The Darkest Hour again the other night and I figured out why I don't really like that. It's because the movie can't decide if Emile Hirsch's character is a selfish asshat or a decent guy who is a screw up. Go one way or the other but trying to have it be both doesn't work.

It looks ok. And yeah it isn't exactly a bomb. Though I think that studios do prefer their movies to actually make a profit in the US even with their increasing overseas efforts. And Battleship did get heavy rotation on advertising in a way that John Carter also did, and that doesn't get added into the "cost" of the movie from what I've seen.
And yeah sometimes decent movies don't make a lot of money and really crappy movies turn a big profit.

He's off as of today on another long convoy.
I'm beyond asking for prayers, but PLEASE.

The Moe Berg story is literally unbelievable. But I guess those are the kind of people that make the best spies.
I particularly liked the story of him sneaking off to take reconnaissance pics during a Major League Baseball tour of pre-war Japan with Babe Ruth and the rest of the All Stars, who like everybody else had no clue.
Except, what the hell was he doing there, he was a journeyman type ballplayer?

Much like Mo, JMB had a vision and made it happen. Unlike Mo, it didn't involve a deviant "theology" created after the fact (possibly hundreds of years after, to the point that there are some few historians who question Mo's existence at all, at the penalty of no longer having heads) which justified criminal activity, murder, and child rape. This being 2012, just different sides of the same coin, right?

Why I remember back in college when your standard Mac came with a 40 MB hard drive.
Heck, I remember before there were hard drives, just five and a quarter inch floppy disks.
A friend of mine got a hard drive when they were real new, might've been, I dunno, 10 MB; he explained to me what it was, and I thought that was the stupidest thing I'd ever heard. Shows how much I know.

Cripes but what a weak-ass comic book geek I am.
Not even familiar with the character.
I thought for sure that was a Skrull.
Would make sense, Avengers and all.
Not really being the biggest Avengers fanboy, I was trying to think of what big classic villain they could base a movie around, and all I could come up with was Ultron.
Posted by: Lewis at May 28, 2012 11:04 PM (UB1pV)
Ultron would be the shit!
Thanos always looked kinda Skrully so it's no surprise you'd be cornfused.
And AK-SHOO-ULLY the Skrulls were the villains in The Avengers, but Marvel couldn't actually call them that due to the fact that Universal holds the license. Instead they stuck 'em with an alternate name taken from a Marvel series called The Ultimates, which was a sort of alt-universe Avengers written by Mark Millar (and I highly recommend it).

Have met Jerry Coleman a few times, thanks to my association with another Marine aviation type of his generation - he looked incredibly good, and enjoyed debating my friend in a good-natured way over the most important aircraft of the Solomons campaign (Coleman - SBDs, which I think he flew; my buddy - Wildcats, which he serviced as an ordnance man along with SBDs and others).
Spent a few hours this afternoon out at Rosecrans National Cemetery - even more beautiful than usual, thanks to the weather, even more perfect than usual. Grew up here, spent a lot of time elsewhere while still visiting and now came back - and I still am amazed at how wonderful the climate is most of the time. The rows of headstones and flags - the ocean or the city and port in the background. A huge flag flapping in the ocean breeze above the HQ (reminded me of the final visual in Saving Private Ryan). I always enjoy wandering that cemetery - I recall seeing some graves for guys who were in balloon units in WWI - balloons! Then there are the recent graves, from Iraq and Afghanistan. So devastating looking at their birthdays - and I wonder if maybe I shared a table with them at the dining facility one day, a few years back ......
Heard a story - haven't confirmed it - that when Ted Williams (hey, another San Diego connection) went back in for Korea, he took a vision test for pilots that was some newfangled technology. Word is his score was never equalled by another candidate while that system was in use. Plausible.
Walking at Rosecrans, peering down at the nuclear subs at Ballast Point, looking across to North Island, seeing the Navy ships tied up there, noting the special mooring stations hurriedly built after Pearl Harbor to keep the carriers and battleships closer to the harbor mouth for quick exits, looking out across the kelp beds at the area covered by coastal artillery in WWII - this part of San Diego is just soaked in important recent military history. But touching on the dreary topic discussed above, I just wonder if the country (including so many of the coastal clueless lucky to live in this gorgeous spot) is still there ....

Late entrance here and all, but noted a reference above to the oddness of Brit titles and the possible disturbing conotations of "Privy Council." That brought to mind the single most disturbing title associated with the Peerage - one that thankfully is no longer in use: Groom of the Stool.
Google that one (or better yet, don't) for some real nightmare fodder, and yet another reason to celebrate that we cut out ties with Old Blighty.
On a similar disturbing theme, research the cause of death for Edward II (reigned 1307-1327). The sort of demise one wouldn't wish on their worst enemy, and an M.O. that would require a seriously disturbed mind even to conceive it.
