Was Trayvon Martin High on 'Lean'?

Apparently 'lean' AKA DXM is the street term for using dextromethorphan (the active ingredient in OTC Robotussin) mixed with sweet drinks to make it more palatable:

One of the recipes for "lean" calls for using Arizona Iced Tea Co.watermelon fruit juice cocktail as the beverage of choice, and Skittles candy. the items found on Trayvon Martin's body the night he was shot by George Zimmerman.

The Conservative Treehouse has a lengthy post about the recreational drug, it's effects and side effects, and alleged screen captures of Trayvon Martin's social media sites discussing his fondness for the concoction.

I remember hearing about 'Robo-ing' in college but based on my experiences with DM-based cough syrups while sick I figured that it would just make you super sleepy and dopey - which didn't sound all that appealing.

But apparently at higher dosages dextromethorphan begins to act more like PCP or ketamine. And there seems to be some pretty good evidence from Facebook posts that Trayvon was a regular user of 'lean' which could explain a lot about his behavior and actions that night.

New Dem Attack: Romney Ran the Olympics While Making Money From Performance-Enhancing Drugs

While Romney was running the Olympic games he had been investing in a company that was making performance-enhancing drugs banned by them, and he had been for almost a decade.

Bain Capital helped turn Nutraceutical International of Park City, Utah into one of the nutritional supplement industry's leading companies. When Bain took the company public under Romney's helm in 1998, it was a huge success.

Romney left Bain in 1999 to run the Olympics, but was still harvesting the rewards of the drug company from the retirement package he negotiated which paid him a share of Bain's profits.

Nutraceutical, at the time Romney was running the Olympics, was making at least 16 products under the brand names Kal, NaturalMax, Solaray and Ultimate Nutrition that include either ephedrine or dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), both of which are performance-enhancing drugs banned by the Olympic games, according to a 2002 report in the Boston Herald.

Except that ephedrine and DHEA are pretty weak performance-enhancers at best and are completely legal - you just aren't allowed to use them in the Olympics. In fact I'm pretty sure you can buy them at any GNC right now so this is some pretty weak attack tea.

Universities Now Holding Transcripts Hostage Over Student Loans

Dave Lindorff writes in the LA Times that growing numbers of students are discovering their old school is actively blocking them from getting a job or going on to a higher degree by refusing to issue an official transcript. The schools won't send the transcripts to potential employers or graduate admissions office if students are in default on student loans, or in many cases, even if they just fall one or two months behind.

It's no accident that they're doing this. It turns out the federal government 'encourages' them to use this draconian tactic, saying that the policy 'has resulted in numerous loan repayments.' It is a strange position for colleges to take, writes Lindorff, since the schools themselves are not owed any money - student loan funds come from private banks or the federal government, and in the case of so-called Stafford loans, schools are not on the hook in any way. They are simply acting as collection agencies, and in fact may get paid for their efforts at collection.

Given that the students have earned the degree and the school has already been paid for the classes, it's hard to see how the universities can justify refusing to send out transcripts. But when the federal government and student loans are involved, reason and logic tend to go out the window.

37 Evenin' 'rons and 'ettes.

Ya know, GHW Bush was a great disappointment to me as a president.  War hero, VP, head of the fucking CIA - he should have been awesome.  Reality?  Not so much.

Nonetheless, he is mostly a decent man.  And regardless of whether you liked W or not, you can see whence he got his love of country and respect for the military.  Unlike the shitstain we have today.

President George H.W. Bush

On 28 April 1984, as Vice President, George H.W. Bush recommissioned USS Iowa at IngallÂ’s Shipyard in Pascagoula, MS.

On 24 April 1989, President George H.W. Bush joined the crew and families of USS Iowa at the memorial service for the battleshipÂ’s crewmembers in Norfolk, VA. He remarked:

“We join today in mourning for the 47 who perished and in thanks for the 11 who survived. They all were, in the words of a poet, the men behind the guns. They came from Hidalgo, Texas; Cleveland, Ohio; Tampa, Florida; Costa Mesa, California. They came to the Navy as strangers, served the Navy as shipmates and friends, and left the Navy as brothers in eternity. In the finest Navy tradition, they served proudly on a great battleship, U.S.S. Iowa.

This dreadnought, built long before these sailors were born, braved the wartime waters of the Atlantic to take President Roosevelt to meet Winston Churchill at Casablanca and anchored in Tokyo Harbor on the day that World War II ended. The Iowa earned 11 battle stars in two wars. October of '44, off the coast of the Philippines -- I can still remember it -- for those of us serving in carriers and Halsey's Third Fleet, having Iowa nearby really built our confidence. And I was proud to be a part of the recommissioning ceremony in 1984. And now fate has written a sorrowful chapter in this history of this great ship.

Let me say to the crew of Iowa: I understand your great grief. I promise you today we will find out why, the circumstances of the tragedy. But in a larger sense, there will never be answers to the questions that haunt us. We will not - cannot, as long as we live - know why God has called them home. But one thing we can be sure -- this world is a more peaceful place because of the U.S.S. Iowa. The Iowa was recommissioned and her crew trained to preserve the peace. So, never forget that your friends died for the cause of peace and freedom.

To the Navy community, remember that you have the admiration of America for sharing the burden of grief as a family, especially the Navy wives, who suffer most the hardships of separation. You've always been strong for the sake of love. You must be heroically strong now, but you will find that love endures. It endures in the lingering memory of time together, in the embrace of a friend, in the bright, questioning eyes of a child.

And as for the children of the lost, throughout your lives you must never forget, your father was America's pride. Your mothers and grandmothers, aunts and uncles are entrusted with the memory of this day. In the years to come, they must pass along to you the legacy of the men behind the guns. And to all who mourn a son, a brother, a husband, a father, a friend, I can only offer you the gratitude of a nation -- for your loved one served his country with distinction and honor. I hope that the sympathy and appreciation of all the American people provide some comfort. The true comfort comes from prayer and faith.

And your men are under a different command now, one that knows no rank, only love, knows no danger, only peace.  May God bless them all."

95 University Loans/ Transcript Denials or "All Your Base Are Belong To Us"

Actually, it makes perfect sense.  Loans are a form of figurative slavery.  When you owe someone money, it influences major decisions in your life from which jobs you accept, whether you go into business for yourself and whether you take a risk to relocate for a new job.  There have been many hints from Obama on his intentions for the recipients of government backed student loans.... Public Service.  I won't enumerate the numerous quotes or policies that would lend support to the idea.  Combine a devastated economy, growing unemployment and ballooning loan debt and college graduates are willing to look at any option that gives them a job and a way out from under the debt.
College loans are headed for a bubble burst and we are well aware that Obama likes a good crisis.  How far is the leap that your government loan officer will be given the power to dictate what job you will take and where in order to work off your debt?  How many of your best and brightest will be willing to sell their freedom for 5, 10 or 20 years in order to eliminate their debt?
The cost to our country is the loss of our best and brightest young minds from the private sector during their most productive, creative and risk taking years.  Older workers with families and mortgages  are more inclined to continue their lives in a job that will have a guaranteed health insurance and a fat pension.
The next sound you hear will be the death of  inspiration for a thousand new Facebooks, Amazon's and North Faces that were aborted before they were ever born.

166 Sorry Jumbo but Kevin is just horrible.

David Brin's novel The Postman, about a guy who accidentally restarts civilization, is a great apocalypse book.  Lots of meat in it.  And Costner basically threw the whole story out.  Kept bits like the women giving a USDA inspection to Costner's character to see if he suffered the super mumps.  To make his character more likeable, its because the Holnists kill the guy's mule is his motivation to resist them.  And then to make that sappy diabetes inducing ending where everything is happily ever after, UGH!  In the book the guy sets out to find out has happened in California, he does not stick around to see the civilization he help recreate prosper, he leaves that task to George Powhatten.  Brin's main character is not really likeable but he is willing to see things through.  And Costner wrecked it.

By the way, it was the Midrash originally, not Maimonides. (I think)

Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo (NJConservative) at May 29, 2012 11:05 PM (nEUpB)

You are correct.  I was mistaken - and I misquoted Maimonides.  The quote I gave was from the Midrash.  Maimonides' quote from Guide to The Perplexed was, "the wicked and calculating person (who killed intentionally and was sentenced to death) – if he seeks sanctuary among us, we must not provide him with asylum and not have mercy upon him...because compassion towards the wicked – is cruelty to all beings."

Sorry about the slight misinformation, folks.  It was fake but accurate.

Dennis Prager also refers to that saying a lot on his show. It really does sum up the harm that well-meaning liberal policies end up doing to decent people in society.

I believe the original translation is something like 'compassion towards the wicked is cruelty to all beings'.

196 Oh and for those wondering Aaron Walker/Worthing was apparently arrested for violating the 'peace order' and not for contempt - although I'm sure his irritating the judge did not help.

The judge apparently has no understanding of the internet at all and thought that Worthing himself was responsible for all 'google hits' and 'tweets' directed at Kimberlin. So he ordered him held in custody and forbid Worthing from discussing the case for 6 months.

Well Kevin Costner was on Tavis Smiley's show on PBS the other night (I was just channel hopping), and was talking about his 'friend' Bill Maher and how Bill was so logical when he criticized religion.....and then I changed the channel before I threw up in my mouth.

Once upon a time in the '80's I thought Costner was a pretty cool guy.  Fandango, No Way Out, Bull Durham, Field of Dreams.....then he dumped his pretty wife and kids to be a playeh, and made some real bowser movies, and now he is friends with Bill Maher.  Well....ick.

229 well, mainly, what language(s) should the 'modern' programmer know?

Posted by: chemjeff at May 29, 2012 11:24 PM (7FadD)

java and web stuff

It depends on what you want to do.  Java is good because it's pretty portable, but you run into problems with some devices that aren't modeled in the java virtual computer/environment.  It's very easy and quick to learn, though.

For web stuff, you generally do well with javascript and php though lots of people use web language packages, now (which I don't like, but they're popular).  PHP is a good language to just script stuff up.

If you are doing tablet/phone stuff, for Android you need java but then you have to learn Android's own subsystem, which is a bit of a pain, though not terrible.

There are lots of languages I don't do (Python, Ruby, ...) so I couldn't even tell you what they are rally for.

What are you programming for?  For just general purposes I would would recommend java, javascript, php (with the attendant HTML, XHTML stuff).  I am assuming you know basic SQL for your database needs, which you'd do through java or PHP, depending on where you are.  This lets you program for standalone applications, web servers, applets, and whatever other stuff you might need.

I don't do C++ and couldn't tell you how portable it is these days.

I haven't seen the actual minute order (probably hasn't been issued yet and won't tell us much when it is), but looking at the link Maet provided, he "repeatedly interrupted" the judge.  These guys are like little tin gods and I am astonished that Walker did not know how to comport himself in the courtroom.  He did this to himself, that's my take.  I could be wrong, I frequently am, but this sounds like he fucked up.  If, as someone posted, he is a corporate lawyer, then he did himself a great disservice by representing himself.  From what I've read, he didn't have a fuckin' clue and it came back and bit him in the ass.  Makes me feel bad, but there it is.

Kimberlin is a highly experienced jerk. Aaron is a nice guy who wants to be truthful. He isn't a court-room guy, clearly, and he let himself get sidetracked. None of this makes him either an idiot or a bad person.

Definitely hope AW gets a lawyer! Gah! But the judge involved in issuing the warrant was not (so far as I can tell, anyway, from what's posted over at Patterico's) the same as Judge Vaughley of the Royal Typewriter Generation.

Judge V. reminds me of the retired judge sitting in near Christmas holidays who looked at a guy and said, "Mr. So-and-so, you have no respect for this court at all, do you?"

Mr. So-and-so stuttered about not having thought about all those tickets and what have you.

The judge listened for a minute or two, shook his head, banged the gavel and said, "Well, you're going to have time to think about it now. Ninety days!"

Cranky, and able to afford to be.

You gotta be prepared to spend hours/days educating them about whatever aspects pertain to the case.

318 chemjeff, my recommendation for starting is to do some javascript (as an introduction before you move into java).  It is very quick and easy, has the same basic syntax as java (C-style) and has an interesting object model, though it's loosely typed.  It is the bulk of the functionality behind most web pages.  You can script up some javascript code and run it in any browser.  It has limitations (no file access - or any devices, limited network access - only calls back to the ip the page came from, ...) because it was built for web scripting.  It's a great introduction, though and you can build some nice stuff with it, aside from the fact that you'll use it a lot if you start doing any web programming, which you will likely do.

You don't need anything to start writing javascript.  Just make an empty web page, put some javascript in it and you're off.  You'll need basic HTML/css with that, but that's pretty easy.  You can look at the source of any web page and see the javascript they are running.  You can look at the source for these pages to see what not to do.

321 Ugh. The Chaos Manor column I've been working on most recently had a showdown between compiled BASIC and PASCAL as it existed for 8-bit CP/M systems. This means a Pascal program listing and a table of benchmarks. Two things that are a real pain to do on the Kindle.

But there is a lot of amusement value in the section that notes how much better it is to do programming work if you shell out $3,000 for a 1 megabyte RAM disk.

322 From patterico.... I surmise that it sounds like Kimmy found a loophole to have AW arrested..... and the **** were added by me for effect ....'cause pixie hates my ass. Read on... ----- I am not an expert on Maryland criminal law, but from talking to people about this, it appears (stunning as it sounds) ***that they have a procedure there in Maryland whereby any citizen can go to a judge and swear out a complaint against another citizen for a crime. If the judge makes a finding of probable cause — and it appears that they rubber-stamp these things, in my opinion — the warrant issues, without any prosecutorial oversight.**** Only at some point in the future does the State’s Attorney decide whether the charges are appropriate. (As an aside, this is my understanding of what happened when Aaron was facing second degree assault charges several weeks ago. As best as I can understand the process, the case was never “filed” by the State’s Attorney. They dismissed it after a video showed Kimberlin had lied under oath about several aspects of the incident. But the charges had lingered on for weeks before they did.) That appears to be what happened here. Apparently Kimberlin went to court and obtained a “peace order” on May 19, 2012 — ****two days after**** Aaron wrote his lengthy post about Kimberlin’s extensive harassment of Aaron. end quote. So lighten up a bit on Aaron.... his arrest had nothing to do with courtroom behavior.

I'm so late to the thread but, if Peaches is still here and no one's answered, according to the latest at Patterico Kimberlin essentially ambushed Walker with an arrest warrent sworn out Sunday saying that because Kimberlin had set up a Google alert Walker's blog post that pinged the alert counted as contact.  The hearing today was pretty much a trap, either Walker showed and the warrent was served or he didn't and there was a summary judgement against him.

Ahhhh, FORTRAN ... the language of crystallography weenies and pipe stress freaks ...

ChemJeff: If you've done enough programming (i.e., you are comfortable with C), then Java is a good choice. C# is very/extremely similar to Java. C++ is not, it's very much C with a lot of extra stuff. Among other things, you need to sweat constructors and destructors, to avoid memory leaks. Java handles this.

As posted previously, pick up XML and related stuff.

One of the problems with Java is it's size, specifically the language. The complete manual is online ... I think only online. Writing a GUI using Java is ... a better idea is to use someone else's GUI kit. Bing 'java.sun.com' to get links to all sorts of Java downloads.

435 If the backseat isn't big enough for Tyler to plow one of his groupies in it's a piece of shit. Posted by: Robert at May 30, 2012 01:32 AM (4ixH5) Robert! FYI, the difference between you and Steven Tyler is that while you screw your groupies in the back seat of your car, he screws his groupies on the hood. I taught him that; he walked funny for a week.

What is the difference between C# and C++?

Very short answer: C# is the automatic transmission version of C++, a non-synchronized manual transmission, designed to compete with Java.

442 For Bible belivers..recently took this from a sermon..something to think about..Agur prayed for two things: (1) to be saved from vanity and lies, and (2) to obtain only moderate success in life, avoiding both poverty and riches.Agur wanted to be saved from wasting his life chasing the illusion of riches and success (23:4-5; Ps 119:136-137; I Tim 6:6-10). Money does not satisfy, even when you get lots of it; this is vanity (Eccl 4:8; 5:10)! It disappears quickly (27:24; Eccl 5:11)! It corrupts morals (Mark 10:23-25; I Tim 6:9-10; Titus 1:11)! You cannot take it with you (Matt 6:19-21; Luke 12:13-21; I Tim 6:7). It chokes out and destroys fruitfulness (Matt 6:24; 13:22). What vanity! Are you wise enough to believe these warnings and pray against wealth? A wise man prays for a moderate income and estate, so he can avoid the temptations to sin on either end of the financial spectrum (30:9). He prays for contentment, and he learns contentment, knowing it is the true measure of success (I Tim 6:6; Phil 4:10-13). A wise man maximizes life by walking with God, regardless of assets or enemies (Heb 13:5-6). He fully despises obsession with filthy lucre (I Tim 3:3,8; Titus 1:7; I Pet 5:2).

I've written a bunch of OO assembler code.  OO is just discipline, rather than tools.

I've seen so many tortured and twisted "objects" bludgeoned to death by poorly architected OO code that the thrill is gone.  I think more damage than good has been done by it.

I'd try powering it off, let the heads park, then give it a smack.  Sometimes that'll loosen up heads that got a stiction problem, or hardening grease in bearings that make spinning up within the prescribed time impossible.

Is it clearly getting past power up and spinning but making sounds like ball bearings being dripped on a table?  Like tic, tic, tic, PING, tic, tic, tic PING  Those would be automatic recalibration -- usually an indicator that tracking info on the drive is toasted (very bad)

Posted by: A less cynical Adriane at May 30, 2012 02:50 AM (NgwbY) Can you tell if it spins up at all? I hope you put it in a plastic bag in the freezer. Moisture is bad. If you can't access it after freezing, consider baking (best right after freezing) at the lowest setting in your oven (like 170-180 degrees) for no more than 45 minutes. Temperature shock like that recovered a lost drive for me recently. Also, I've recovered a lot of data from Mac drives - if it's an intel Mac, download and burn Hiren's Boot Disc and try the Linux-based "Recovery Environment," can often read data off drives the OS can't. Do that before baking it. Temperatures that low won't destroy solder, plastic or the drive, BTW.

Kind of crispy and mild. I had never heard the low temp procedure before, so I will try the software then try the bake! Posted by: A less cynical Adriane at May 30, 2012 03:33 AM (NgwbY) The recovery software on Hiren's CD can read the drive from a mac or a PC. As in, the last big recovery I did of a Mac drive I did on a PC - it doesn't care, it can read both from both. Some Mac files get grumpy after being restored from a PC, however, because the Mac stores some file data in separate files on the disc.

628 Four movies and two different versions of each?

AND hours and hours of extra shit?

Can't go wrong.

629 I really shouldn't be spending the money, though.

630 But it was my birthday last week.  Fuck it!

Posted by: Robert at May 30, 2012 03:23 AM (4ixH5)

631 Happy birthday to me, here's a bunch of movies featuring an alien with a giant penis for a head.

Posted by: Robert at May 30, 2012 03:24 AM (4ixH5)

632 And the little face raping thing!

Posted by: Robert at May 30, 2012 03:24 AM (4ixH5)

633 Can't get enough alien face-rape, nosir.

Posted by: Robert at May 30, 2012 03:24 AM (4ixH5)

634 And with that I will simply say...

Posted by: Robert at May 30, 2012 03:25 AM (4ixH5)

635 Nearer my Beast to thee.

Posted by: Robert at May 30, 2012 03:25 AM (4ixH5)

641 it's funny, but if you combine the choom-mobile Obama with the pot dealing Martin, they do look like they could have been father and son.
