I kinda feel bad about this post since Jenny McCarthy seems to be a well-meaning, compassionate albeit not particularly bright person who thought she was helping - but alas such people can still end up doing incredible harm to others.
One of the greatest achievements of modern technology is that we have been able to defeat the infectious diseases that routinely killed most children throughout history. Huge amounts of money and years and years of dedicated, patient work by scientists and doctors went into this project so that parents wouldn't have to suffer the heartbreak of burying half of all their children - a regular occurrence up until the last century or so.
And for a few brief years we achieved this. But it turns out that a well-meaning blonde B-list celebrity and her activism could undo much of this work in only a few years.
In June 2007 Jenny McCarthy began promoting anti-vaccination rhetoric. Because of her celebrity status she has appeared on several television shows and has published multiple books advising parents not to vaccinate their children. This has led to an increase in the number of vaccine preventable illnesses as well as an increase in the number of vaccine preventable deaths.
Now vaccines are not perfectly safe but they do save a quantifiable number of children's lives every year. So it would be foolish to give up a known life-saving good for a unproven benefit based on a celebrity mother's 'strong feelings' who also happens to believe that she's an indigo child and her son is a crystal. Yet here we are.
Oh and you can thank the backward Islamists of Afghanistan and Pakistan for why mankind is still plagued by polio, the great killer and crippler of children, despite a safe and effective vaccine being available for over 50 years.
Some Classic PJ O'Rourke on Europe
I was having dinner.in London.when eventually he got, as the Europeans always do, to the part about "Your country's never been invaded." And so I said, "let me tell you who those bad guys are. They're us. WE BE BAD. We're the baddest-assed sons of bitches that ever jogged in Reeboks. We're three-quarters grizzly bear and two-thirds car wreck and descended from a stock market crash on our mother's side. You take your Germany, France, and Spain, roll them all together and it wouldn't give us room to park our cars. We're the big boys, Jack, the original, giant, economy-sized, new and improved butt kickers of all time. When we snort coke in Houston, people lose their hats in Cap d'Antibes. And we've got an American Express card credit limit higher than your piss-ant metric numbers go. You say our country's never been invaded? You're right, little buddy. Because I'd like to see the needle-dicked foreigners who'd have the guts to try. We drink napalm to get our hearts started in the morning. A rape and a mugging is our way of saying 'Cheerio.' Hell can't hold our sock-hops. We walk taller, talk louder, spit further, fuck longer and buy more things than you know the names of. I'd rather be a junkie in a New York City jail than king, queen, and jack of all Europeans. We eat little countries like this for breakfast and shit them out before lunch."
Of course, this guy should have punched me. But this was Europe. He just smiled his shabby, superior European smile. (God, don't these people have dentists?)
The Rock That Can Spy on You for Decades
Once the stuff of science fiction ubiquitous hidden sensors are reality for the military in Afghanistan:
Palm-sized sensors, developed for the American military, will remain littered across the Afghan countryside - detecting anyone who moves nearby and reporting their locations back to a remote headquarters. Some of these surveillance tools could be buried in the ground, all-but-unnoticeable by passersby. Others might be disguised as rocks, with wafer-sized, solar-rechargeable batteries that could enable the sensors' operation for perhaps as long as two decades, if their makers are to be believed.
..Even more sophisticated are the UGSs being tested northeast of Norfolk, Virginia, at a Lockheed proving ground. Arrays of up to 50 palm-sized acoustic and seismic sensors form a mesh network. When one sensor detects a person or a vehicle passing by, it uses unlicensed radio frequency bands to pass an alert from one node to the next. The alert finally hits a communications gateway, which can send the signal via satellite, tactical radio network, or Wi-Fi to a command and control center.
I was peripherally involved in a similar project involving cameras and all I can say is that with modern electronics and super-low duty cycles you'd be amazed at what is possible.
The Economic Reality of a Restaurant
Clearly they're just a means of using the hunger of the 99% in order to make an 'unfair' profit.
Your margins are three times your cost on everything. Some things you make more, some things you make less. You have loss leaders on the menu-veal chops and steak might cost you 50 percent of the ticket price on the menu. Pasta and salad you can run closer to 15, just as long as everything works out to 30 percent.Bells and whistles like appetizers and desserts bring down the cost. Desserts are almost pure profit. Wine by the glass is usually marked up four times, although we don't always do that. At Babbo we get about three times cost for a quartino, or sometimes even two times, so our wine cost is 30 to 50 percent.
Thirty percent of your monthly take is going to be your food and wine cost. Thirty percent is going to be labor, 20 percent is miscellaneous, including the rent, and 20 percent is your profit. Your rent per month should be your gross take on your slowest day.
4 Degrees With 0% Unemployment

Drake UniversityThis weekend, I graduated with my bachelor's in actuarial science. I've already had a job lined up since September, and I would say the same is true for the majority of my classmates, who have also had job offers for a long time.
I'll be working at Travelers Insurance in St. Paul, Minn., in their property and casualty business.
Overall, 0% unemployment in our field may be a bit of an overstatement. I know a couple students who haven't decided what they're doing yet.
Should College Football Be Banned?
Well a few weeks ago a debate on this proposition was held between Buzz Bissinger and Malcolm Gladwell on the pro-ban side and Tim Green and Jason Whitlock on the anti-ban side.
The debate held poetry: Both Whitlock and Green, former players, offered up misty testaments to their time on the field. "College football is the Statue of Liberty," claimed Whitlock early on, yoking the game to ideals of diversity and tolerance. He argued that football unlocks the American dream for disadvantaged youth-and that his own career profited from the sport's lessons of cooperation. There was passion as well, courtesy of Bissinger, who raged about what he considered the modern college student's diminished academic experience. And there was pain. Malcolm Gladwell's descriptions of CTE-positive head scans-"it looks like someone drove a truck across their brain"-hit hard, especially in light of the NCAA's decision not to compensate college players.
But in the end the proposition to end college football was passed:
After a spirited battle, Bissinger and Gladwell were clear victors, capturing 53 percent of the final vote to Green and Whitlock's 39 percent. Eight percent left the auditorium undecided. The numbers revealed a remarkable about-face: Before the debate started, only 16 percent of the crowd supported the motion, 53 percent opposed it, and 31 percent weren't sure.
An 80 year old woman decides to go skydiving but as she tandem jumps with her instructor, she starts slipping out of the harness. Oh and contrary to earlier reports she wasn't refusing to jump at the beginning - her leg had gotten stuck and was hurting her.
Reason #38 why you won't see me jumping out of a still functional airplane.

she won't believe that. She got her 100% blameless reason for why here kid is autistic. Its not her fault, its the doctors the pharmaceutical companies. To actually suggest that she might have had something to do just won't fly. Its their fault and all evidence to the contrary is wrong.

I think that's part of the problem. People my age (late 30's) have never seen(yet) the real effects of an epidemic but *have* seen an autistic kid. It didn't help that doctors pretty much refused to acknowledge the issue because, understandably, to them it was too stupid to waste breath on. Unfortunately, those who were making money of the anti-vaccine scares used that as "proof" they were right.

Jenny McCarthy is not even a pimple on the Ass of the greatest Mass Murderers of All Time.... the Environmental Protection Agency.
When they ban'd DDT, with no real scientific basis, they killed millions of people in Africa and Asia... and are still killing them today... estimates are malaria kills between 770K and 1 MILLION per year... so.... as it was ban'd in 1975... thats in the neighborhood of 30 MILLION preventable deaths.

To me its like the children of Palestinians. They are victims of their parents, just like Jenny is a victim of circumstances beyond her control. But at some point those little Palestinian kids stop being victims and become a part of the problem and sympathy ceases. Jenny has joined the problem in full force and sympathy for her has ceased. She's scum, and her screeching has gotten children killed.

Have to admit that Son had a reaction (probably to the tetnus booster they said) as we were walking out of the doctor's office after his last check-up. He suddenly got really white but I thought he was goofing around (which he does a lot) because he kept trying to go through the glass panel *next* to the door. It wasn't until he started to collapse and I had to catch him that I realized he was serious.
It was really scary with an 11 year old, so I can see why it's very frightening to the mother of a toddler who has a reaction. On the whole though, I firmly believe that the vaccinations are a good thing. It probably helps that my f-i-l *remembers* the time he spent in an iron lung as a 3 year old because of polio and made sure we understood what the effects of an epidemic were like.

We have developed an odd notion of risk as a society - and this feeds into the Jenny McCarthy thing.
There is certainly some risk from a vaccine - it isn't zero. But the risk of a serious negative effect is dramatically lower then the risks you face if you don't immunize your kids.
However, since the vaccine is an active risk and not taking one a passive one, some idiots see the latter as no risk at all.

Funny they listed NotB as the best, but left off Powerslave completely. I'm very partial to the latter, although both albums have some of the best songs they made in the 80's. Don't confuse people who are anti-vaccine with those who have objections to certain vaccines. There's a big difference, you know. Not all vaccines are created equal.
Objections to mandates for certain vaccines can also be rational, depending on the vaccine, the disease, and the probabilities.

Well, my son has Asperger's, or high-functioning autism, or non-verbal learning disorder, or PDDNOS, or whatever the hell the DSM-V is calling it now. For a while there, I was on board the vaccination thing. My son seemed pretty normal until he was about fifteen months old and then it all went to hell. It seemed to dovetail eerily with his shots record. He did have a slight reaction to his last major shot combo. This was in the mid-nineties, when we were all groping around trying to figure out what was happening. For a while there it was red dye # 40, leaky gut syndrome, chelation. You're devastated and looking for desperately for some answers because that's your starting point for trying to make it better. But we didn't stop vaccinating because the, documentation wasn't compelling enough, even back then, before the story broke that the study out of England was an absolute fabrication. If all the kids are getting the same vaccines, then why weren't all becoming autistic? We knew it had to be something else, or something more. Maybe my son had a physiological weakness that made him susceptible to the shots, or whatever. That was just his (our) misfortune. Vaccines have killed kids. As a parent, you know that going in. It's a small, but acceptable risk for the massive protections the vaccines bring. So I don't really blame Jenny McCarthy as a grief-stricken parent trying to latch on to whatever seemed reasonable to her. I blame our foolish media for, at best, making this airhead a cause celebre and overlooking the paucity of the science in order to sell a few more magazines and book a few more ad spots on Oprah. At worst, she was a willing dupe for the Big Bad Pharm zealots at a time when the narrative required it.
Sorry this is so long. And she is butterface, peaches.
And my son, the boy we were told would never be able to function outside a self-contained autism room, graduated from a regular high school on Sunday, and was accepted into two universities. He's far from neurotypical, but we did what we could. He's got about as good of a shot as any other kid these days, I guess.

To me, it boils down to all "gay" conversation is just talking about how someone likes to get off. And I make sure to tell them I really care less how you like to get off. It ofends them, but it shuts them up, and usually permanently on that subject.

"Part of the problem is that they did such a good job with the vaccinations that people have forgotten about mumps and German measles and what they can do."
I believe that this is indeed a large part of the problem. I personally think it would have helped if doctors had come out immediately saying "This is how it used to be, look at how much better it is now". On the other hand, at least some in the anti-vaccine community seem pretty conspiracy minded and doctors responding might not have helped at all. Although it seems like it would have *had* to help if anti-vaccine wasn't *all* low information parents heard.

I should ask her about co-op. Right now the experiments are pretty simple with easily obtainable supplies so that's not the issue. She's just not very interested in science. About the only reason I have for *not* putting her in a co-op is that she's already the one who takes part in *all* special classes we do which doesn't seem very fair to the others.

Salad bar approach? No. A la carte is how it goes.
Look, Texas went way overboard with that idiotic pseudo-mandate for the HPV vaccine. If you want to blame someone for forcing the issue, then blame the governments that overreach and begin to think that they know everything. In doing so they jeopardize any credibility they had and open the issue up to doubts even for the important vaccinations.

[Wall St Journal, 8/15/2003] The root of this government role goes back to August 1993, when Congress passed Mrs. ClintonÂ’s Vaccines for Children program. A dream of HillaryÂ’s friends at the ChildrenÂ’s Defense Fund, her vaccines plan was to use federal power to ensure universal immunization. So the government agreed to purchase a third of the national vaccine supply (the Clintons had pushed for 100%) at a forced discount of half price, then distribute it to doctors to deliver to the poor and the un- and under-insuredÂ…
The result is a cautionary tale for anyone who favors national health care. Already very high in 1993, childhood vaccination rates barely budged. A General Accounting Office report at the time noted that “vaccines are already free” for the truly needy through programs like Medicaid. Meanwhile, however, the Hillary project dealt the vaccine industry another financial body blow.
Thirty years ago, the [National Academy of Science's Institute of Medicine] report notes, 25 companies produced vaccines for the U.S. market. Today only five remainÂ…

Infants and young children aren't fully vaccinated against those diseases until they have completed the full series of shots, so they are at risk from other unvaccinated people. They rely 100% on herd immunity for protection. Also, vaccines are not 100% effective, so even those people who are vaccinated rely on herd immunity to some extent. It depends on the vaccines, but most herd immunity breaks down somewhere around a 95% rate of vaccination in the population. In some parts of the Seattle area (where I live) there is a 75% vaccination rate in kindergarteners in the public school system (and similar low rates in older children). This is well below the point where herd immunity breaks down, and as a result we have an epidemic of whooping cough.
I really don't like the idea of the government forcing anyone to do anything, but we do force parents to get certain medical treatment for their kids because at some point the kids' welfare takes precedence over the parent's right decisions. When my daughter was in the NICU and we were asked to sign a consent form for a blood transfusion the doctor made it perfectly clear that if we didn't sign they would do it anyway because my daughter's life was at risk. I was fine with that (not that I would have refused anyway). For vaccines, I think it is perfectly reasonable to require vaccines for enrollment in public school. You don't want to vaccinate, then home school your kids or send them to a private school that allows that. There may be some exceptions for specific medical reasons, but none for "personal beliefs." The problem in Washington state is that you can be exempted without any reason at all, so a lot of people don't. There are also a lot of hippies here who think vaccines are "toxins" and "unnatural".

I understand that many of you here, including me, believed that Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan must be on Mitt Romney’s short list. And many of you may take me to task for his omission. That is fine, as I detest the boredom of “Echo Discussions” and I look forward to your comments in challenging the make-up of The Final 7. But before we take part in one of our epic discussions here at R4’12, let me explain why I believe that Paul Ryan will not be under consideration by Team Romney.
First, I want to say IÂ’m a big supporter of Paul Ryan and I would have no problem in supporting his selection as Vice President. I do believe his selection would secure the election, because it would result in discussions centering around the issues of the budget, the economy, and jobs. The selection of Paul Ryan would take this election away from the silliness of issues such as Rev. Wright, bullying in high school 45 years ago, Donald Trump, personal drug use 30 years ago, and so on.
According to “The Eagle”, the rumor on ” The Hill” is consistent in regards to Paul Ryan’s future: Paul Ryan will be the “Quarterback” for the Romney Administration up on “The Hill.” It is being said that Paul Ryan & Mitt Romney have already had more discussions between the both of them on how they should hit the ground running after the election than President Obama has had discussions with anyone of the Democratic side of capital hill in 3 1/2 years. According to the rumors, discussions have gone into such detail as to how Ryan will present his reform package once Romney has taken the oath of office. Ryan has been effective in getting some traction with some Democrats, such as Senator Wyden of Oregon, and that progress maybe at risk if the reform push comes the Vice Presidential office, instead of someone in Congress itself.
Do I believe Ryan is on the VP list right now? Yes. But it does not seem likely that Ryan will become the Vice Presidential pick.

I have a hard time buying the excuse that their plumbing wont handle it where they used to live. When you go to a place that it does work, use it. I could be wrong, but it seems like not shitting on the ground skills would take about a half second to pick up.

That policy sounds a lot more reasonable. Here they just recently required people requesting an exemption to get a doctor's note saying they have been informed about vaccines and still decline, but that's it. I'm extra sensitive about the issue right now because I'm getting ready to have a baby in a few weeks and there is a crazy amount of whooping cough going around here. One more thing to worry about that we really shouldn't have to

Of course that won't bother Bloomie cause he'll just change his party registration back to Republican.
Trouble is his idea of Republican is more in line with 18th century France. the removal of royalty doomed France to be governed by tyrants, dictators and other assorted hoodlums and thugs who could be polite to the bourgeois merchant classes and appear egalitarian all the while acting like a 3rd century berber prince.
I'd guess he has a secret room where he strut's around in his First Citizen of the Republic costume with his hand in his frock.
He's a pusillanimous pompous pipsqueak that needs to be permanently disbarred from running for office. Bloomie doesn't think he knows better what you need, he KNOWS it. Hey he's rich so that proves it right there.

Also, big pharm defends its turf quite well. When doctors publish results on the danger of vaccines, other big pharm doctors make massive personal attacks. See also the recent piece on the world's most popular drug, Lipitor, where it does not give anyone a longer life, and causes terrible side effects. But big pharm cooks the data and keeps selling profit. And Merck with its pain med that caused a 500% rise in heart attacks.
It turns out that since we went to having over 100 vaccinations for a lifetime, our rates of autism, asthma, and neurological problems have exploded....and now every fifth child ends up with some sort of neurological disorder. Studies in rats show exactly how this mechanism works.
Perhaps an actress is not the smartest advocate. But, she brings about an important reality. This is an area where big money is preventing careful thoughtful science. You should spend a few days looking at "the greater good" and reviewing some of the better literature on both sides. A follow up piece would be quite different. Just talk to folks who have had a vaccination for thier kids and ended up with a totally disabled child.

First worlder anti-vaccine crowd are the lowest of low. I suggest you head on over to India to find out about polio. Please bring your unvaccinated children with you.
Anti-vaccination crowd always show up whenever and where ever vaccines are mentioned. They are like Paulbots. I suspect there is some over-lap.
