Overnight Open Thread (5-8-2012)
— andy

In a feat of organization so intricate and smoothly coordinated that it could've only happened at the HQ, I'll be providing you another thrilling, if abbreviated, ONT tonight.

At least Slublog was kind enough to provide some content.

First, 14 photographs that shatter your image of famous people:

It's a little known fact that Fred Rogers had just been told Dick Lugar won his first term in the senate when that picture was taken. Seemed appropriate.

Drew has been chronicling the lousy names the Navy has been choosing for ships here lately. CDR Salamander reports on one they got right:

Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus announced today the next Arleigh Burke class guided-missile destroyer (DDG) will be named the USS Thomas Hudner. Thomas J. Hudner Jr., a naval aviator who retired as a captain, received the Medal of Honor from President Harry S. Truman for displaying uncommon valor during an attack on his wingman, the first African American naval aviator to fly in combat, Ensign Jesse L. Brown.

Go read the rest at the link. It sounds like Captain Hudner's flight suit likely had to be modified on account of his giant brass balls.

Another day, another SCOAMFy hashtag for conservatives to punk on Twitter. Today's victim: #AskMichelle

chemjeff, here in the central OK metroplex, we must have about, oh, a million Chinese restaurants.  I solemnly swear the food tastes exactly the same at all of them.  It's like there's a central kitchen somehwere in downtown OKC and they just truck it out to the branch offices.

Except for Panda Express.  It's different, but not in a good way, IMO.  Can't specify why, but it just misses for me.

Now we do have some fine Japanese eateries in the area.

I try to slow down next to Obama-stickerized cars on the interstate (they are always cars, not pickups) and laugh at the person or persons in the car.  Seems to piss 'em off.  I know, I know - very immature.  It's easy and even easier if they also are sporting a Coexist sticker or a rainbow sticker (and they usually are).

dear gay people= NO, you were NOT born that way, stop fooling yourself already. youre ANGRY and AFRAID of the opposite sex so youve put up a mental "defense mechanism" to deal wiff yo problem.

men= primarily afraid of 'weakness' (including mental-weakness) rejection from the female gives him too much of the willies to deal with. so boom, he avoids it by becoming gay and railing against that which makes him feel squirmy.

womenseses= look for and admire what they consider "qualities" in menses, those qualities can vary with each however. usually when a man fails to uphold these qualities, the angry woman begins to LOATHE the male. especially after the couple have chirren. thats the reason you see so many lesbians with a tribe of kids and no man around...and a permanent scowl on their faces lol

there ya have it gay people, now go cry bout it in a corner and wait for the next vote....fags.

recipes for what?

my fried rice (and no, it's not correct but it's how I like mine):

make white rice the day before, dump it into a container and break it up with a spoon and rice vinegar, let sit out on the counter for a few hours till it hits room temp cover and put it into the fridge.

1 half of onion diced

2 cloves of garlic smashed and diced

a bit of ginger (I dunno, I just eyeball it)

2 eggs (more filipino but I don't like doing the raw egg)

frozen veggies

soy sauce

peanut oil

heat wok to high, drizzle a bit of oil into pan and swoosh it around to coat.

toss eggs in and scramble till almost done, put it onto a plate or bowl

wipe wok with towel, put a bit of oil in and swoosh

toss in onion, garlic, just before onion is done, throw in the ginger. Once done throw everything into the bowl with the eggs

wipe wok and put a bit more oil in, put in rice and cook with some good doses of soy sauce till your done (taste it till it's hot) then throw everything else back into the wok and place a lid on it. Good to go

263 My simple, tasty, satisfying staple meal: Fried Hominy.

Take some good, thick bacon. I usually used Hormel Applewood Smoked. Wright is good, too, and so is that fancy uncured bacon they have at Whole Foods. Cook up five or six slices, or as many as you can fit in your best fryin' pan.

Cut up the cooked bacon, and saute one bunch of diced green onions in the bacon drippings.

When the onions are just starting to turn brown, return the bacon to the pan along with a 30-oz can of hominy (drained). Mix it up enough to get the hominy coated with the bacon grease, then cook the mixture for five to ten minutes on High and then ten to fifteen minutes on Medium, stirring frequently the whole time. Let it sit for a few minutes before serving. It's actually even better the next day after sitting in the refrigerator overnight, but I can't wait that long when I make it.

Makes enough to feed two as a full meal. Also makes a fitting side dish for occasions like Thanksgiving, as it's actual Injun food. I got the recipe from the Cherokee Nation's official website at cherokee.org.

320 chemjeff, cooking rice is just slightly more complicated than boiling water. You dont need a 'rice cooker'. As a chemist myself, I too once thought that cooking was difficult. Then one day I said "now just wait a damn minute! Cooking IS chemistry."

To make rice, use a suitably sized non-stick pot with lid. Add one cup of dry rice, two cups of water, a pat or two of butter, and a little salt if you so desire (I don't). Bring to a boil on high heat, stirring occasionally. Pop the lid on, drop the heat to very low, and let it sit for 22-25 minutes.

All done.So simple a caveman..........

368 I can't agree that gays are "angry and afraid" of the opposite sex.

At least not male gays.

Have you ever met or heard of a dumb male homosexual?

How many male homosexuals have been extraordinarily talented?  Lots, throughout history.

As for lesbians, that observation about male gays does not apply.

Sure, some lesbians are bright, but for each there's a counterpoint as dumb as a stump.

Wisconsin Commies.  They were feelin' it, were on top of the world during the sit-ins, flee-baggin, MSNBC live casts back in the day.  Now the little people outside of Madison have spoken,  the Supreme court election, the previous recalls, now this.  Walker's looking pretty good, coming out on top, the union money was spent in vain.  Liberal tears, so sweet. 396  Fort Downmorons.  An outpost on the Ewok River in the Upper Fappalachians.

Fort Downmorons has a long history dating back to the pre-moccasin days of the 1/32nd tribe of East Fappalachia.  The 1/32nd's were a fierce group that often took slaves and tortured them with hour upon hour of droning endless bullshit.  Originally, the 1/32nds called Fort Downmorons: ProgBullshit.

During the first revolution of the Rightthinkers, ProgBullshit was overrun after a long siege and renamed Fort Downmorons.  Turd Trebuchets and Poop-a-pults were the earliest siege weapons used in the region.  Later, a steady rain of skinned hobo carcasses were flung over the walls at the 1/32nds.

After the first fall of Fort Downmorons, all the walu-rite wodka in the region was consumed so that the over-running hordes could generate enough piss to complete shame the 1/32nds.  To the great dismay of the hordes, it was discovered that 1/32nds are completely oblivious to shame.

414 #1 The progressive opposition is dedicated and willing to do anything at their disposal to get ahead. -Please stand with Florida christian schools that are being closely scrutinized because of their adherence to biblical standards. CLA attorneys are working to protect religious freedom -Please pray for a local church in Ohio that has legal questions helping needy families. The state is putting pressure on this small local church to give more to the state. -Chrisitan Churches in California, North Carolina, West Virginia, Florida, California, and Indiana are facing local officials who disapprove of the bible. Pray for the christian attorneys who are trying to advise these churches. -A chuch in Michigan is being probed by the state for handing out bible tracts. -Pray for a student in virgina who was told that he couldnot give bible tracts to other christian students. Pray that CLA attorneys can resolve this issue quickly. The local public school system is doing everything they can to stop this. The local public school leaders are afraid the tracts may offend those who embrace relative morality and/or alternative lifestyles. Any prayer is appreciated.

Here's how I see it.  Of Obama's 52%, most of them voted for him because everyone assumed the black guy would legalize.  (Hell, I thought that would be the one thing his clusterfucking administration would get right...pppfffffttttt!!!!!)  A sizeable minority of white dimwits voted for him because voting for First Black President made them feel good (do we need to address the black vote in that regard?).  The rest were just dumbfucks who thought, "Well, he seems like a nice guy/has a nice smile/wore a tie like what I have/mommy and daddy didn't love me enough as a child" yada yada yada.

422 And now, for the "nobody is left around movie review" for The Avengers. Saw it in 3D (basic Real3D, not Imax) because that was the only matinee around here. One thing I noticed right away was that the opening scene was a bad choice for 3D. People running into the near frame was jarring, not immersing. Secondly, a lot of time the "Real3D" 3D has perspective problems, near-frame objects (like the helicopter in the early chase) looked more small than close. That did not afflict *most* 3D shots, but the could have skipped the crowd and repetetive close-glass shots (like seeing the labeling on a window up close) because they didn't add anything. *ahem* The movie has earned it's #1 status. It was "nearly great," or close enough for a Summer blockbuster. Overall good dialogue, I can see where some said it seemed lacking in the middle - to me it seemed less that the dialogue wasn't crisp that there wasn't enough of it. We're used to Whedon packing the dialogue in like a packrat filling a moving truck, but the pacing was more "normal" in this film, so it seemed sparse. The Climactic Battle was probably one of the most engrossing I've seen. There were a couple of "Okay WTF" moments, but not too bad. They used the 3D really well there and it seemed more subtle (except for flying vehicles), and it really gave you the "being there" feeling during those scenes. I'm glad they deleted the lecture scenes. There were only a couple of groaners in the film, and a couple of "controversial" things (in context) that didn't even need explaining. They did a good job giving everyone hero moments, I was worried some characters would be left on the sidelines, and it would have been easier to. Alexthechick will have a reason to be pissed at Joss, and I have to admit that scene was a little formulaic. Not sure how to do it otherwise (well, I am actually), it seemed a little samey despite good dialogue. Well, samey for a Whedon film. Despite minor complaints, I *will* be getting it on DVD, and I may drag someone else off to see it in the next couple of weeks. Especially if I can get them to pay for it. Definite worth-seeing for comic fans, action fans, gamers, bored people, etc. Also it was a morning show on a Tuesday in a slightly out-of-the-way place so it was almost empty. *SCORE!* There was one kid and I cringed, but they made *no* noise during the movie. Amazing, Seriously, like a 4-year old, dead silent. Magic.

The Prometheus trailer was in 3D. I am dreading it but I'll go. Dreading because IMHO the Aliens franchise has gone almost entirely downhill, and I'm not sure Ridley "Kingdom of Heavan" Scott is going to fix that. Also not that into horror anyway, and honestly it was always three parts horror to one part science fiction. The trailer was *visually* impressive, even if they used the music from the Planescape: Torment trailer from the 90s. Expendables 2 looks expensive. Unless like half those people volunteered. There were some other movies, but I didn't care about those. There were like 9 trailers.

The trailer seems to suggest they're sticking with formula, which is good in this case. I like some wire-fighting, just not Flying Dorkwad, Hidden Loser style. There has to be some *reason* for it in the story, not just "trust us, we can defy gravity." Or just more subtle wire-work, like a lot of the earlier Hong Kong specials (in my collection *ahem*).

The first Hulk movie he looked...bland.

The second Hulk looked loads better but in a sort of 90s Dale Keown kind of way.

This Hulk looked a little more Jack Kirby-esque, but with the added touch that they made him resemble the actor.

As for Ruffalo, I like that he was understated.  He's new to the role having replaced Ed Norton, hasn't had time to fit in to it, but still managed to sell the character well.  It wasn't *his* movie, it was Downey's and Hemsworth's and Evans' and Jackson's  and Johansson's movie.  Ruffalo was just the "that guy" of the film.  It's not that he was blowing my mind with impeccable acting, but that he could do so well with so little.

438 People in Minnesota are weird. They will strait tell you where they come from. Lots of Fins, Polacks, and Germans. More Recently (and puzzling) Somalia and Vietnam. I'm Texan is what my parents told me. Hadn't needed to look much past that.

446 AH!

I see now.

I am familiar with some of those types of films, I just didn't realize it constituted a genre.

450 472 Hong Kong...blood opera? Posted by: Robert heads to Bing at May 09, 2012 04:41 AM (4ixH5) A particular subgenre of action movies - like The Killer, A Better Tomorrow, City on fire... American cinema picked up the style (and John Woo as a director) and produced films like Desperado, Reservoir Dogs, Kill Bill and Face/Off. Face/Off was a crappy movie but the cinematography and choreography of the fights was excellent. Unfortunately a band took the name "Hong Kong Blood Opera" and has completely cluttered up the search engines.

451 A fact not said aloud very often; Manson never personally killed anyone. His crime was conspiracy and the only witnesses were the ones who actually did the murders. This isn't mentioned very often and he's painted as some heinous maniacal killer. He is a maniac but he never laid a hand on anyone.

454 I am familiar with some of those types of films, I just didn't realize it constituted a genre. Posted by: Robert heads to Bing at May 09, 2012 04:45 AM (4ixH5) It tends to get lumped into other categories. Some people started calling it "Blood Opera" a long time ago, it tends toward the melodramatic, and, um, bloody. Fulltime Killer was also a good example. Jackie Chan was part of the whole Hong Kong cinema thing for a long time, not so much Blood Opera - he tends to be more lighthearted. And less bloody.

Face/Off was great.  Haven't seen it in years.  All I can remember is John Travolta going all sexual predator in his daughter's bedroom while she's prancing around in her little white panties.

Wonder if it's on bluray yet?

Didn't Chan do a movie a couple of years back where he plays a Chinese budding drug lord in Japan?

It was supposed to be a pretty serious movie.

Posted by: Robert imagining hi-def panties at May 09, 2012 05:27 AM (4ixH5) Self-publishing is a huge opportunity, but what I've seen so far is mostly pitfall. Despite being for money, it's kind of like open-source software... some of it is pretty good, but you end up with a lot of mediocre crap or hyper-specialized stuff because nobody can make a living doing it. Also a ton of flash games with ads in them. People who read fast and don't care what they read will find wonderland, writers kind of get the shaft. Competition improves the breed, unless your competition don't care how much money they lose, in which case serious people get shoved out based on price. Books aren't cars. Dramatically.

Heh, heh, heh.

I guess it's not that having an "Ask the First Lady" deal on Twitter is a *bad* idea.  It's just that these clowns don't realize how unpopular they and their stupid policies are, and so they get a shock when they allow us peasants to say what we really think.

Heh, heh, heh.
