Massachusetts honored its oldest living veteran, 104 year-old Irene Davey, today. She and her husband joined up together on the same day in '43 to serve in the big one. From an older interview:

I have already lost the big diamond in my ring (about 25+ years ago) and recently one of the smaller diamonds. They were my husband's grandmother's diamonds. Made me sick to my stomach when I lost the big one....never found it.

If you mine them that's true. Though my mom used to visit a place in Illinois where diamonds could be found on the surface. Most were only industrial grade but every few years somebody would find a gem quality one.
One of my friends younger brother found a gravel sized stone a few years ago that had to be meteoric. It was way heavier than a piece of magnetite of the same size, almost as heavy as galena. I would have been neat to section it. I've done my share of mineral prospecting and collecting and you I've never found anything like it.

I've driven across the replacement bridge a couple of times ad both times I was white knuckled on the other side. After the tragedy with the first bridge, the replacement has a couple of nice safety features such as those huge concrete bumpers around the base and a cable that runs the length and will trigger a warning if a span collapses.
Still, I hate that bridge.
Unlike the Dames Point Bridge here in Jax, where the cables are on the outside of the span, there's just that single line of cables down the middle of the Sunshine Skyway and only a 28" or so high concrete barrier between you and a steep drop below.

I actually support legalizing Pot and most other drugs. I just think that a lot of the people who support legalization of it have bizarre ideas about what will happen once it's legalized. Plus, many of the pro pot people that I've met are libtards who rage against corporations.

The black vote thing confuses me a great deal. Here's an anecdote with a very small sample size, but I think it's revealing.
I have a younger (but who isn't) black friend. Postgraduate degree holder. Professional. Well compensated. So conservative he makes me look like a lefty. He worked on the campaign staff of one of our R senators in 2008.
We talked a lot about Obama prior to the election. He thought it was a joke. He knew all the things we all knew and that everybody knows now. The day after the election, I was commiserating the results with him and he looked kind of sheepish. He told me when he got the ballot in his hand, he just couldn't not vote for the black man - that he felt some kind of historical pressure. Now in OK, that one vote or any total of such black votes made no difference in the results at the state level.
OK. Now he's grown back up. No worries about the race issue. He'll support Romney. But he tells me his black friends will all mark the paper for Obama, and that they are all very much aware of his policies, tendencies and anti-American stance on almost everything.
I just don't get it.

I've always believed that gay and lesbian Americans should be treated fairly and equally. I was reluctant to use the term marriage because of the very powerful traditions it evokes. And I thought civil union laws that conferred legal rights upon gay and lesbian couples were a solution.

I've thought about members of my staff in long-term, committed, same-sex relationships who are raising kids together. I think homosexuals have always had exactly the same "rights" as heterosexuals in regards to marriage. Any homosexual man, for instance, is "free" to marry any woman he wishes and who will marry him. That woman could be either heterosexual or homosexual. No difference in "rights".
What the homosexual community wants is special consideration, beyond those afforded heterosexuals. This is what irks me; the "I'm special" factor.

Let me stress this is just my opinion. I shouldn't have been so adamant about it, but I would never touch it, myself. Never. Never. Never. I would not be looking to customize my brain chemistry just to quit smoking, especially since the possible side effects of such aren't worth the consequences.
But, like I said, I've tripped many times on many things, so I'm not averse to altering my neurophysiology. Maybe I'm just being hypocritical, but I would just never use something so strong to just try to quit smoking. I don't know why, but from the first second I heard about Chantrix I didn't like anything about it. Then when I started hearing about the side effects, that was it for me. But I would never touch Ambien or anything like that, either and I would warn people against that, so you can figure that attitude of mine into the calculation.

The DOMA is exactly what the Constitution says the federal government should do, the correct way, which is why the opposition to it (on Constitutional grounds, LOL) is so friggin infuriating.

I have to disagree. States have always done stuff that clashed with other states. The determination of death is a state issue and until the states all signed a compact, you could be legally "dead" in one state and moved to another where you were still "alive". That wasn't a pressing issue (as dead people, or even nearly dead people, rarely do much interstate travel - though one instance is enough for lawyers to declare it a general principle and the Leftist version of the Commerce Clause would come into full authority) and was finally resolved by the states, themselves, but the least intrusive way of the federal resolving such issues is to legislate on the Effects of certain state laws on other states rather than telling one state that they cannot do something because one other state doesn't like it. No state has veto power over the laws of any other state and Congress is not empowered to nullify one state's laws on the complaint of another the same way one state cannot force another to follow whatever it decides.
Of course, there is a point at which two states are just too different and at odds to share the same federal government, for which no federal laws can help.
I believe that DOMA is exactly what the Constitution prescribes for a case such as this. The federal government will not recognize a certain thing as marriage (as the feds have a recognized need for a definition of family - which was always just taken for granted as it was obvious to normal people) and states can have those types of twisted definitions in their law but they cannot export them out.

There were some practical reasons for that kibbutz arrangement. There were a crap ton of orphans in the post-war era leading to the big emigrations to nascent Israel. The kibbutz started out more as a way of dealing with a situation where there were far more kids than families to place them with.
It died off largely because the need had ended and nobody really wanted to live like that once they had a functioning nation. Nobody especially wanted it all that much in the first place, despite how some tried to romanticize it.

Regarding the use of links, a long time ago we could post hyperlinks that would take you far away in the internet. The icons at the top of the comment box could do magical things. The large B would embolden you wit. The italicized i would skew your letters. You could underscor and strikethrought the mightiest of letters. Now, however, we have devolved. Like the frustrated OWS people we rail against the machine but to no avail. I think the hamsters that power this joint have died of exaustion.

GameStop is selling a lot more download codes these days. The amount of display area given over to DLC items was a real eyebrow raiser when I went into a GameStop recently after a few months.
They know what happened to Blockbuster and Hollywood Video, and they know the business is going to shift more and more to downloaded content. So they're trying to plan things to maximize the profits while it's still a retail business and wind down the company and shift into something else. The company notably gets the shortest leases they can on the store spaces. When the time comes they can start reducing their store density on fairly short notice with a minimum of losses. At any given moment a GameStop with at least one other store within five miles has a lease coming up for renewal in less than three months.
They won't come out and say the B&M video game selling business is doomed but they're perfectly positioned for it.

But that was what they were set up to be and that was how their rules were designed.
Ever hear of a synagogue on a kibbutz (not the later kibbutzim, but for the first half century of them)? No, you don't. Why is that? What did the kibbutznics (not your relatives, of course, but the ones who made the kibbutz) have against synagogues?

The kibbutz was the size at which the only viable communist societies ever worked. Extended families/tribes. There were similar things like the Oneida colony. Beyond that tiny scale it just doesn't work. You need a more sophisticated model to have working, growing society. Thus the kibbutz was a self-limiting model. It isn't surprising that it sounded a lot like a summer camp to American Jewish kids hearing it described. That was the pitch when it was dying off. A fair number of teens from a few years older than me saw as a way to see a distant part of the world and were shocked to discover hard work unlike anything they'd experienced in their lives but wouldn't have been unfamiliar to any sharecropper's son. I remember the better ones coming home a lot more mature than when they left and certainly far more appreciative of what they had here.

Got really excited cause I still have many fond memories of all those all arcade games that never got console ports. I learned everything I ever needed to know about leftist theory from my time on kibbutzim. What they want and why their ideas are totally unworkable - even at the perfect level of the kibbutzim (between 100 and 5000 people) with intelligent people who were committed to the cause (save ones who went there out of need or were assigned there). There's a very good reason why the kibbutzim kept doing what they were doing until they were pretty much all broke (even after the huge state support in the later years). A few got lucky and made it with hits on their factories, but the great bulk found that everything they thought about people was wrong. Eventually, they had to install individual electric meters and start having individuals pay for their own use (out of their kibbutz allowances) because the community use method found that no one cared about the cost and were totally wasteful with just about everything.

You don't need to be anti-religion to not have much need for a synagogue or church. I'm most definitely not a leftist but neither am I an observant Jew. But I regard myself as a Jew and those who wish Jews harm would certainly regard me as such. If I'm looking for a place to live, access to a synagogue is way, way down on my list of priorities.
The leftist may claim to be anti-religion but what they're really about is anti-competition for their own faith. I'm not a big fan of religion in general but the nastiest manifestations in recent centuries is the madness that conquered the Russians and Chinese in a way the Muslims could only dream of accomplishing. The Commies learned some of their techniques from the Islamic hordes and in turn taught them back to a new bunch of Muslims. The PLO was a pretty irreligious hardcore lefty bunch for a long time, too. (Is there something in the water in that part of the world?)
There have always been plenty like me who identified with their ancestral religion as a culture but had little interest in the mythology.

That is widespread among Euro descended groups. A bigger problem for Jews is the number of children born who don't identify as Jewish. Of my eight nieces and nephews I think only two of them have any depth of knowledge of what it means. Two of them may have been largely raised as some form of Christian following my brother's divorce but I've little information of what their life with their mother was like in that regard.
For the most part, I don't think any of them strongly identifies with any faith. I'm not big on religion but understanding history remains important.

Nowadays, when I do go it's to an orthodox synagogue. I got roped into the Spanish+Portuguese ones for the longest time. Interesting. They call their rabbis "reverend" (which is really just an Anglicization of "rabbi", I assume, same root) but it always felt a bit weird. And the Spanish/Portuguese synagogue in New York had a choir, which really threw me for a loop. I'd never run into such a thing.
On the bright side, the Sephardic Jews are much more lenient on what is kosher for passover, which really helps. I tend to keep that and do the fasts, for the most part.

The Israeli Jews are reproducing - even the secular ones. They have an average of around 3 kids. They used to joke about it saying you need two for replacement and one extra, just in case. That was back a few years back when bombs were going off left and right in the cities, but I don't think it's changed much in the last 5 years.

Just praying for the most part. The Sh'ma is the big thing. It's the prayer that's in the mezzuzah on the door, which all Jews must affix. It reminds Jews of our relationship and covenant with G-d. The real importance in Jewish prayer revolves around the reading of the Torah, which happens weekly. The entire Torah is read once a year, the same exact way.
The most important observance in Judaism, however, is the sanctity of Shabbat. Other than Yom Kippur (The Day of Atonement) Shabbat rules over everything. To not set the Shabbat aside as a special day and abide by the laws of it is about the worst thing (in terms of violating the rules of observance) that a Jew can do and the Jewish Nation is constantly warned that it leads to ill for the Nation. Most Jews today (myself included) do not observe Shabbat, and frankly, I can fast all I want and keep kosher for passover or whatever else, but without sanctifying the Shabbat it is all for naught, really.
Those are the broad strokes. Someone else might have something to add (or correct - with two Jews you get three opinions on everything).

It ain't no walk in the park, that's for sure. And a whole bunch of weird rules have been fashioned to accommodate modern technology. Jews aren't allowed to "do any work" on Shabbat, which used to mean not allowed to make fires but later got translated to not being allowed to turn lights on (or off). Orthodox Jews get around this with automatic timers (which I always viewed as cheating, really, but this happens with all the laws). If you think the parsing of lawyers in America is bad ... you've got to see how Jews have parsed the religious law. But, this is what we do. The Talmud is the parsing of the law of the Torah and it will make your head spin.
Judaism was set up as a governing system (we were pretty much the first nation with an abstract notion of citizenship and a passport - circumcision) in addition to its religious aspect, so there are rules for many, many things. This law, however, was never supposed to be enforced anywhere but in the promised land and never applied to any non-Jews outside (and most not even for non-Jews living in Israel). This was workable because Jews were never to proselytize (and never have, save one or two extraordinary circumstances in history). We were given a limited, finite piece of land and that was it. No more. There is to be no land expansion outside of that. It's limited government, in this way, though Jews are bound by the Law wherever they are.
