Overnight Open Thread (6-10-2012)
— Maetenloch

And we're off on a happy new week with the possibility of an improved new new comment thingy coming soon.

The Happiness Equation

To follow up on what Ace talked about on Saturday here's a video where Dennis Prager breaks down what causes unhappiness and how you can avoid it. It's a short video (4.5 min) and well worth watching.

And here's a video where he discusses why happiness is a moral obligation we have to others. If you've ever been married to or the child of an unhappy person, you know what a lifeforce-sapping toll it takes on other people's lives.

These videos are all part of Prager University where he and others have attempted to distill key ideas and wisdom from their lives into pithy 5 minute videos.

Inside Club Gitmo

Hell I've lived in worse dorms and summer camps, and I still don't have a Playstation 3.

Terror suspects held at the notorious Guantanamo Bay prison are allowed to use computer games consoles, attend art classes and watch Harry Potter DVDs, it emerged today.

Detainees, said to be among the world's most dangerous terrorists, also have access to libraries with hundreds of books and magazines, and can work out at a multigym or play football.

Revealing images from the controversial jail in Cuba shed new light on conditions for the inmates, a group which US officials believe includes senior al Qaeda figures such as bomb-makers, strategists, financiers and terrorist trainers.
Each block has a library of more than 200 books, in Arabic, English and Russian, as well as DVDs and magazines, such as National Geographic.

Harry Potter DVDs are said to be particularly popular among the inmates, and the books in English include works by Thomas Hardy, Bill Bryson and Isaac Asimov.

Sixteen PlayStation 3 consoles and 16 Nintendo DS handheld computer games are available, with popular games including football and motor racing.

Wait didn't Obama promise to close down Gitmo on his first day in office?

How To Write, Print & Publish Digital Books

Using powerful, yet simple to use tools, Booktype makes it easy for almost anyone to start their very own e-book. An easy drag-and-drop interface makes it plain and simple to make an e-book, while tools such as collaborative proofreaders, editors and contributors make it possible for organizations to hook up with other people and write an e-book in a teamwork environment.

The digital book can then be exported to popular e-book stores such as Amazon, iBooks, Lulu.com, etc. The e-books are also format-compatible with many e-book readers such as iPad, Kindle, Nook, and more. To make sure it's suitable for you, you can try the online demo and see how Booktype works.

Well these days the biggest obstacle to publishing your own book is just writing it. Which is how it should be I suppose.

7 Phrases That Are Great Signs It's Time to Stop Talking

How Internet Killed the Porn Star

Free porn is killing the professional industry reports Louis Theroux in the Guardian.

"Fees for scenes, not surprisingly, have taken a hit. "Some girls get $600 [£390] for a scene now," the retired performer JJ Michaels tells me. "It might be $900-$1,000 for a big-name girl. It used to get up to $3,000." For guys, rates can be $150 or lower [25 cents for every dollar a woman earns, AT]"

Musicians have adjusted to declining music sales by increasing the number of live shows and porn stars are doing something similar:

"It's an open secret in the porn world that many female performers are supplementing their income by "hooking on the side".For many female performers nowadays, the movies are merely a sideline, a kind of advertising for their real business of prostitution."

70 Okay, just watched the two Prager videos.
So I can see his point about a bad mood being like body odor when it comes to how you treat others.
But there is a fine line between acting happy and acting shallow and fake.
The first one, I can see Prager's point.  But I completely loathe the idea of presenting a fake image.  It is just being dishonest.

85 our condo board is engaged in power struggle. factions, alliances, actions, counter actions. full grown adults literally sneaking up and down the stairs and peeking around corners as the go to clandestine planning meetings. they are avoiding the elevators because the doormen are allied with one side and reporting which of the believed plotters is going to which floor. maybe that melrose place was not as far fetched as I once thought.

148

"He that diligently seeketh good procureth favour: but he that seeketh mischief, it shall come unto him."Proverbs 11:27

What are your goals? What is your reputation? How does your life affect others? If the answer to all three questions is doing good and helping others, you will obtain the blessed favor of God and men (Luke 2:52). If the answer is to serve yourself and cause trouble for others, then certain punishment is coming from God and men (Ps 7:15-16; 9:15-16).

The key is how you treat others. If you are good to men, you will be blessed. David and Peter wrote, “For he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak no guile: Let him eschew evil, and do good; let him seek peace, and ensue it. For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil” (Ps 34:12-16; I Pet 3:10-12).

If you are selfish or hurtful to others, if you are critical or negative, if you are bitter or envious, or if you sow discord or irritate others, then you are in for a painful and troubled life. It is that simple. As the saying declares, “What goes around comes around.” David wrote, “The wicked in his pride doth persecute the poor: let them be taken in the devices that they have imagined” (Ps 10:2). You will be exposed and punished (11:29; 26:17-2 !

153  Loving your neighbor is the second commandment; but the LORD offers a reward with it – you will obtain loving favor from Him and others, which is of great value (22:1). “As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith” (Gal 6:10). And you should do good to your enemies (Matt 5:43-4 !

You are alive to do good (Eccl 3:12), to serve (Mark 9:35; 10:44; Gal 5:13). Paul warned not to forget to do good (Heb 13:16), for your good service to others will be remembered in the last day (Matt 25:40; Heb 6:10). Consider the blessings (Ps 37:1-5,23-2 !

What good could you do right now for someone? Do it! Now! Why wait? You are being selfish! Knowing you could and should do good, and not doing it, is sin (James 4:17)!

220 I get very tired of New Yorkers insisting that the best "____" can only be found in New York. You can fill in the "____" with just about anything: pizza, ice cream sodas, falafel, bagels, coffee, hot dogs, bookstores, movie theaters, nightclubs, delicatessens, music, panhandlers . . . you name it, there's a self-satisfied New Yorker bragging about it.

The sad fact is that from about 1920 to about 1970, New York really was in a class of its own. But now it isn't, and New Yorkers are increasingly retreating into fantasy. There isn't one single product that one can get in New York that one can't get just about anywhere else in the USA courtesy of online commerce and FedEx. Its much-vaunted cultural life fades on close examination. The city has half a dozen decent museums, just like every other large city on Earth. The theater world consists almost entirely of revivals or stunt-shows based on movies. People don't go to shows in New York to see the shows, they go in order to be going to a show in New York, the way people once did.

The only industries which hasn't been driven out of New York by punitive taxation and union thuggery are media and publishing, which have future prospects about on par with the buggy-whip or celluloid collar trade. "Wall Street" has been moving out of New York piecemeal for years. The financial industry is based in places like Atlanta, Charlotte, and Omaha.

I enjoy visiting New York, but I recognize it for what it is: a city desperately struggling to maintain its image as a hip and exciting place. Its inhabitants fling more of their own and everyone else's money at this project, but in time reality will win out. New York will join Philadelphia and Boston as faded American "cultural capitals" dreaming of past glories while the streets go unpaved.

287 Finally got in here (relatively) early on the ONT.  Let me tell you about my experience with LibRage(tm) on the job this week.

I work at a local radio station.  It's a music format, but I have enough freedom to work in some jokes and bits.  On Tuesday's airshift, I talked briefly about Joe Biden's speech in which he stated that he, the President and their wives might not have made it into college without government intervention.  I said, "Frankly, I'm surprised Biden got into college even WITH government intervention." I start the commercial break and go on...

Ten minutes later, one of the other DJs comes into the studio to tell me that I have a caller that wants to take issue with my Biden joke.  I answered the phone, and the caller did want to take issue, and by "take issue" I mean "shout me down in unadulterated rage".

RageBoy was extremely offended that I joked about Biden's intelligence, and wanted to know if I'd ever made any jokes about Bush.  I told him, "Yes, I'm an equal opportunity offender.  But I've only been here two months, and Bush hasn't been in office for over three years, so those jokes are old.  Part of my goal here is being topical."  Then RageBoy demanded to know if I had ever finished college, and what my degree and GPA was.  My reply: "It's none of your business, really" This got him even angrier, he said since I was in radio, I probably barely got my GED.

I tried to ask him why I would have to have a college degree to make a joke about college, and also why it's OK to joke about GW and Palin's intelligence, but not OK to do the same to Dems, but RageBoy was having NONE of that. He just would not shut up, yelling the usual lib PC talking points.  Then he said, "I want to talk to your supervisor.  I'm not putting up with you talking about Biden and Obama like this!  I've listened to this station for 15 years, and I'm getting you fired".

I handed him off to my program director and got back to my airshift.  When I came out to get a glass of water ten minutes later, he was STILL on the phone with RageBoy, trying, like me, to get a word in edgewise.  When the phone conversation was finally over, he looked at me and said, "That guy is a real @$$hole."  I told my PD what I had said and he was amazed that someone would call our station in an angry tirade over something you could hear on Letterman or Leno (granted, it would likely be about a Republican if they told it).

Oh, RageBoy also demanded to know if I was using my real name on the air. The PD told him it was none of his damn business. The last thing I need is this fool going all Kimberlin on me.

295 Time to be Negative Ned again. I can't speak for anyone else, but I have personally never been cheered by *scolding*. And that's what calling people selfish and accusing them of defying their moral obligation is. I *encourage* happiness when I can (or I try to). And I have known a few people who think they can scold others into cheerfulness, as I've said before I avoid them at all costs, they are a drain on *me*. I think partly this is similar to the introvert / extrovert thing, some people just do not understand each other because their mental characteristics are so opposed that they can't get past the difference. Learning about *a person*, and what makes them happy or unhappy, and how they react, is harder than a blanket rule based on *my* experience or preferences. And it may not always work, but I guarantee it works better than the blanket rule. Kind of like the pizza thing. "My preferences are an absolute objective standard" is a common platform for ideas, and a guarantee of conflict, however minor.

I said "few exceptions" and "adult skeleton" because a) these changes become pronounced after puberty and b) athletes, dancers and the like can screw this change up via their excercise and eating routines.

315 234 I get very tired of New Yorkers insisting that the best "____" can only be found in New York.

Posted by: Trimegistus at June 10, 2012 11:13 PM (JXPUp)

Oh cripes, I fucking hate whenever a New York team is playing on tv because the announcers fall over themselves talking about how NY fans are the "smartest" fans in all of sports. Really? Do they forget about those yahoos booing and cheering everyone of their NFL draft busts.

Broadway? We get about 10 shows a year that roll through town that are national tours, and they are just as good as anything on Broadway. Hell, even our city has a nationally know museum that rivals anything in New York. All it takes is for someone local to make it really big, then you get nice stuff in your town.

Financial capital? If it wasn't for Wall Street, New York would be the new Cleveland. MrsCaniac works for one of the major banks, based on the west coast, and she goes to Montana for meetings. All of this bank's back office operations are in small towns, not in large cities like New York.

Wrath is one of the Seven Deadly Sins. Wikipedia says this about it:

"Wrath (Latin, ira), also known as "rage", may be described as inordinate and uncontrolled feelings of hatred and anger. Wrath, in its purest form, presents with self-destructiveness, violence, and hate that may provoke feuds that can go on for centuries. Wrath may persist long after the person who did another a grievous wrong is dead. Feelings of anger can manifest in different ways, including impatience, revenge, and vigilantism.

Wrath is the only sin not necessarily associated with selfishness or self-interest, although one can of course be wrathful for selfish reasons, such as jealousy, (closely related to the sin of envy). Dante described vengeance as "love of justice perverted to revenge and spite". In its original form, the sin of anger also encompassed anger pointed internally rather than externally. Thus suicide was deemed as the ultimate, albeit tragic, expression of hatred directed inwardly, a final rejection of God's gifts."

Let anger turn you to redoubled virtue, but indulge not the vice of wrath. So get on the fuckin' stick and help get the SCoaMF voted out this November.

And AFAIK a microsingularity is generally not stable, so it would probably just wink, people nearby would feel s light tug, and maybe there would be a pinhole in one of the chairs. Gone. A Science Fiction author (and aerospace engineer IIRC) named McCollum postulated that antimatter microsingularities could be stable (he also postulated that they would actually be normal matter traveling backwards in time - or that *we* are the ones traveling backwards in time and the antimatter is the normal matter. Most people will not find that interesting, I thought it was fascinating. It cheered me up.

Captain, thanks for taking me back 15 years ago when I was in radio. I really loved getting those phone calls from the people wanting me to fire everybody for the slightest thing. My favorite was when the DJ made a joke after Sam Walton passed away. He said that he would have gone to the funeral, but he didn't have a membership card. This was back when Sam's was getting to be a big thing in town. Everyone at the station was doubled over in laughter, but then we started to get the calls from the Wal Mart associates. Throughout the day, we figured out when the shifts changed because we would get calls whenever they their shifts changed. The sales manager wanted me to record a "fake" apology to air with the recorded joke, that way, we would play the joke the whole day, but the people calling in to complain would actually think we were apologising. The owner nixed the idea though.

Fun times indeed.

I've noticed that too, i've also noticed that the roads they're "fixing" around here were perfectly fine before the "fixing". All they did was rip up the top layer of asphalt, that was in good condition to begin with, and put a new layer of asphalt down. I even noticed that one road they ripped the asphalt was brick underneath, why not restore that cool brick road instead of laying down asphalt? Just stupid.

Posted by: yankeefifth at June 10, 2012 11:45 PM (Z9EHQ)

That is why they have moved their back room stuff to flyover states. But, they are really downsizing all of their front office operations in places like that also. The private banking sections have the "contact" person in the bigger cities, but now their support staff are increasingly leaving there. Not so much because of the rent, but because the customers aren't there either. CEOs don't need to be at the office everyday like they used to. Technology has made the physical office somewhat obsolete.

368 I believe Prager is wrong on the moral obligation to be happy. When we see a person who is melancholy because of lost things, and we say "be happy", we do a disservice to their loss. When we see a person who is angry because of gross injustice, and we say, "be happy", we disrespect their sense of justice. When we see someone merely bored, and say, "be happy", we do a disservice to happiness. It is special, an acknowledgement that the world is a better place than we thought. The problem people have with unhappy individuals is not that they are unhappy. It is that, usually, they are being dicks. I have news for you: happy people can be dicks too.

The jock said we don't play those songs, he said he didn't care and that if he didn't play them that he was an advertiser and would get him fired. The jock was freaked out but knew he would be in a world of trouble if he played it, so he didn't. While I was telling him what he did was the right thing, the pissed off advertiser called. He wouldn't tell me anything about himself, but that he was going to pull his advertising if I didn't fire the guy, I told him that I would be happy to take his message to the sales manager. He said he would call him, which he did. 10 minutes later the sales manager comes into my office laughing. It turns out that the business owner called him to cancel his advertising, but since the guy was usually drunk, he didn't realize that he hadn't advertised with us in about 4 years. Plus, the sales manager informed him that after checking his records, that he still owed us money for that previous schedule. He hung up quickly.

I see that Ace of AoSHQ has had enough of his comments section. I don’t know the details – and I don’t give a tinker’s dam about the details, frankly – but I do have several rules of thumb for running a comments section.

427 Big picture, Ace had steeled his courage to the sticking point and posted a deliberate provocation to He Who Must Not Be Named on the front page of his blog. He told people he was going to, he asked that they not screw around while he was doing something so hazardous and tricky, and he stepped into the fray.

Whereupon a bunch of folks started joshing around about it.

The thing that Ace knows that they probably didn't is that Aaron Walker spent >>>time in jail<<< and has had to spend mucho $$$ because some internet-challenged judge emeritus bought the theory that he was responsible for commenters on other blogs whose bloggers had issued posts reacting to Aaron's post. Just ponder that for a bit. It wasn't Aaron's post, it wasn't his community of commenters, it wasn't other bloggers directly reacting to Aaron's post......it was commenters on other blogs that had reacted to Aaron's post. And Ace took a deep breath, crafted and rewrote a post a zillion times, and put it on the front page of his blog as the only entry for that day.

And a bunch of *his own commenters* started throwing shit around like the stuff that got Aaron Walker arrested.

Now everyone from Instapundit to Eugene Volokh thinks the judge blew it....but, oddly, it wasn't the judge's ass in the slam temporarily rooming with "Bubba the Shiv." To say that someone should just stand up for what is right without subterfuge or subtlety is too fuckin' easy when it isn't you that pays the bill.

I love being in the Wild West at AoSHQ. The discussion here is the best on the internet, and tends to work around broken commenting systems or iffy hamsters.....but I well understand Ace's take on this -- he's taking on someone who has blown people up, ruined lives, spent years in the pen and repented not at all -- and he's requested no flash photography while he's doing it....and people are setting off firecrackers instead.

I think he isn't really very close to really understanding unhappiness.

I think, unhappiness is caused by being rejected by Ace.

I mean, if we miss the registration we can't put our two cents in every 6 months or so...

And that would be sad.  And sadness makes me unhappy.

My life is pretty much great.  But I am not doing everything I thought I would as a kid.

I think, Prager misses the part about having the right priorities in your life and giving your time and efforts to those things that really matter most to you.  Like to me, my husband and kids are most important, who cares what the world out there thinks... as long as my family is good... I'm happy.  So that is where my time and energy go.

The rest of life is a diversion so I don't get bored.

Knowing what is important in the long run, and spending your life on those things, not wasting your time on those things that really don't matter...

Image?  What is that?  Who doesn't have Walter Mitty dreams from time to time.

When I was ten I thought I could be a pro-base ball player... even though I hated PE and couldn't throw or hit... and was a girl.  I got over it.

I'm good at other stuff.  Stuff I never considered when I was young, girl stuff, I really love much more than baseball.

There's both less and more going on than people figure. Those "bullet holes" are mostly just deferred maintenance. Come by, socialize, talk 'bout stuff......but when the Head Ewok says, "shush" -- well, it's his place. And it's not that he says that 'bout most things.

501 There is nothing about the comments at Hotgas or any of the other such places with registration that makes it worth the effort to read them.  Here, you either learn something, get to know someone, or laugh a little.

Somehow I am not picturing that surviving registration.  So, I don't know if I am going to hang around once it happens.  I might, but I have my doubts.  We'll see how it unfolds.  If I don't, it has been real fun, and I'm gonna miss everyone.

From what I saw in the presidential historians article, they should stick to studying history and not making history. All caught up in the phoney baloney excitement and hubris of the moment. Rolled. Played. Bamboozled.

572 It's funny, the way things work. I've been here for just about exactly four years, and for most of the time I've wished that it would adopt a slicker interface: threaded comments, rich text, maybe even the ability to post pictures.

Over the last several months, however, I've changed my mind entirely, and have come to prefer the straightforward linearity of this setup. I became fascinated with the way in which conversations developed, especially when riffs were involved.

Now, it seems certain that things are going to change, and I find myself dreading it. Not that I have any problem with registering; I'd just hate to see anything change the ecosystem or make it harder to have conversations. I'd really hate to see anything like what the Breitbart sites have, for example.

Still, whatever new setup comes, I'll be lurking, and occasionally posting, as I have constantly for the past four years. I can't quit you, Ace!

621 I dreamed the other night that I was at a Megadeth show with a coworker. It was in a small room, there was maybe 50 people there and everyone was seated at tables. Megadeth played a couple of songs and I was wondering where the moshpit was. Eventually they wrapped up what was a very short set, grabbed something to eat and were beginning to usher people outside to perform some kind of ritual. I wasn't sure if I was going to be able to take part since I had to get ready for work but then their tour manager started talking shit about my truck and I took offense and started going off on the guy. Then I woke up.
