Remembering The Tiananmen Tank Man
Just over 23 years ago the Chinese government broke up the pro-democracy demonstrations at Tiananmen Square killing thousands of protesters in the process. But as the tanks moved in a single man stepped in front of them and blocked the entire column. He kept the tanks stopped and at one point climbed aboard the lead tank and talked with the crew before blocking them again. Here's the scene we all remember:
And here is the wider perspective:
To this day no one knows who this man was or what happened to him - some say he was executed soon after while other say he managed to lose himself among other prisoners and eventually escape into hiding. But one thing we can be sure of is that the lead tank commander and the crew were all shot shortly after this picture.
An authoritarian police state like the Peoples Republic of China can deal with the occasional dissident with bullets and tank treads, but it absolutely cannot tolerate any of its forces failing to literally crush opponents of the regime. When your power and legitimacy comes out of a barrel of a gun, shooting people is pretty much always your first and last option.
One thing I've learned from being on-line for almost 30 years now is that mercy of any sort is wasted on trolls.
- Be vicious to trolls. It's not like you're depriving anybody of food or oxygen.
- Be capricious. If you're consistent, they'll know where the line is; if they know where the line is, they'll skate to the edge of it.
- Be indifferent to trollish suffering. Being called a facist (not a typo: most trolls can't spell) who's suppressing free speech* is not a cause for concern; it's semantically equivalent to "You're doing your job."
- Be obnoxious. Trolls do it because it amuses them to do it. Being made fun of is not amusing, particularly when you can enforce a ban. Remember: they need your site more than your site needs them.
It all boils down to this: every so often you have to shoot a troll, the better to encourage the others. It's fun!
Would You Even Feel a Head Shot?
Short answer: Maybe.
A couple of online articles have discussed whether you would be conscious of being shot in the head with the general conclusion that it is unlikely because the damage happens faster than the brain can register a conscious sensation. While this may be true in some instances it ignores that fact that there are many ways of taking a bullet to the head.
...But while it's true to say that many people will lose consciousness before they even know they've been shot, it's not guaranteed. Although it will mean that some people will be unfortunately aware of their death, it also means that others are able to save themselves.
O Fortuna is a medieval poem that was set to music by the German composer Carl Orff in the 30's as a part of Carmina Burana. Most people today know it as The Omen theme. Well here's its lyrics are decoded meme-style.
And of course the best version of O Fortuna is probably the techno one by Apotheosis. But sadly because the Orff family refuses to license rights to the song, you cannot legally buy it.
First They Came for Plastic Bags. Next They're Coming for Straws
Because hair shirt environmentalism is mostly about expressing your green virtue through suffering. And enforcing this suffering upon others.
Environmentalists have kicked off a campaign called "Straw Wars" to rid London's Soho district of drinking straws. Businesses that sign up to the effort promise not to give out straws to customers unless they're requested; so far, 31 bars and clubs have joined the anti-straw crusade.
This isn't the first time environmentalists have tried to rein in the tubular accessory. Earlier this year, Miami Beach banned hotels from giving out straws because they always seemed to wind up littering beaches. Given the wave of plastic-bag bans sweeping across America, it's also likely this won't be the last effort to stop straws. So if you can't live with enjoying your drink straight from the glass, perhaps it's time to invest in one of these stainless-steel numbers.
Hopefully you're not the type to use this killing word:
[it] had been around for more than thirty years in respectable venues when a clutch of usage critics including Theodore Bernstein and E. B. White came down on it hard in the 1960's. Writers who had been using it up to then said their mea culpas and pledged to forswear it. Its detractors were operatic in their vilifications. The poet Phyllis McGinley called it an abomination and said its adherents should be lynched, and the historian T. Harry Williams went so far as to pronounce it "the most horrible usage of our times"-a singular distinction in the age that gave us expressions like "final solution" and "ethnic cleansing," not to mention "I'm Ken and I'll be your waitperson for tonight."
Behind the Scenes of Famous Movies
Oh noes.
The average U.S. bra size has grown from a 34B to a 36C in just a generation. That's troubling, given that weight gain has been associated with an increased risk of postmenopausal breast cancer.Girls also are hitting puberty earlier than ever before - another trend that increases their long-term breast cancer risk.
About 15per cent of all American girls begin developing breasts at age seven, according to an influential 2010 study in pediatrics.
...Cancer rates have doubled since the 1940s with one in eight women likely to have breast cancer in her lifetime, according to the author.
The Yahoo AoSHQ group. Bla bla bla.
And don't forget about the Job Bank.
And my twitter thang.

Maybe, maybe not. It depends on who they are. If they're well-connected, they could get off with just a reprimand. In China, it all depends on behind the scenes stuff which we have little visibility into.

What has always amazed me is
1)how much trolling appeals to the left;
2)how many leftie trolls there are; and,
3) how much time leftie trolls have on their hands.
I am convinced there is a loosely organized effort by Dems/libs/leftists/Communists/statists/totalitarians/Occupiers/”Anarchists” to troll and derail comments at conservative/libertarian sites (just notice how often the very first comment in a thread at such a site is from a liberal doing his/her best to cause chaos). It’s almost like they never really believed all that stuff about free speech and the Constitution they spew when they can’t get traction.
Being a leftist dupe is such an angry, cynical profession.

I know some people said only if they also got a down-ding button of some sort. but really, if I don't agree with something I should probably take the time to say why. Whereas sometimes I get a giggle out of a comment, but don't really want to take the time to do more than acknowledge I appreciate it.

Agreed about the straws. My teeth are also very sensitive, enough so that I don't usually have ice in a drink, if there is ice I *have* to have a straw. We went to *one* especially nice restaurant at Disney World, which means it's pretty much the only especially nice restaurant *ever* for my family, and they had paper straws. Paper straws are gross. I can understand having them at the nature perserve and the water park, but they have no place at an actual cuisine (sp?) type place.

In Jr High and High School I had a friend whose family were political refugees from Poland. If you wanted a Coke it came out of the closet, and I actually learned to enjoy them that way.
Exactly, about the paper straws. Who, assuming they were in their right mind, though getting paper thoroughly wet along its entire length was a *good* plan?

Plenty of liberals loved the idea of fewer people since that's what baby Gaia wants - and that's fair enough, if you hate humanity, it is good news.
But quite a few argued that the issue, and it was an issue, was the lack of enough "gender equity" laws. This is profoundly absurd, as Japan may well be a horribly sexist country, but the issue coincides with the rise of feminism in Japan and everywhere else.
Feminism cannot be the solution to the issue, when it is unarguably at least part of the problem. Or, to put it another way, if the problem is mercury poisoning, you can't fix it by drinking more mercury.

It's all part of the abuse of copyrights that's been going on over the last 50 years or so. Used to be, stuff was avant garde, became classic, then was cultural. Now it has been turned into multi-generational rent-seeking for the benefit of uncreative lawyers.

I totally agree. I lift weights and when I am on course I can get my body fat down to 14%, chart says it should be 24%.
There is a military table to calculate body fat, which is what I am talking about.

Maybe one more place I am forgetting.

First, nobody demonstrates for democracy as such. If you agree with the regime, there's no need for an election. Only someone out for regime change gets out there for "democracy". So let's dispense with the pro-democracy pretence and look at what sort of regime the protesters wanted.
These protesters had put up a "goddess of liberty" which looked a lot like the statue over in New York. That means they were making their appeal to Americans. Imagine if our Tea Party was putting up big papier-mache statues of Vladimir Putin and plastering a bunch of signs in Cyrillic. That's treason, dawg.
But anyway, even without the humbug, and the treason; even if the Chinese in the capital had actually wanted a democracy, there's no way they'd have kept it. Those troops they brought in? They were from the countryside. They didn't give a shit about the latte-sippers in Beijing - especially latte-sippers with an American fetish. What happens in China when the urbanites and ruralites want different things, and when the government is weak, is Warring States. Deng Xiaoping and his tanks killed thousands, yes. They saved hundreds of thousands.
The real issue, I suspect, is that this crowd *here* is American. I get it. You're going to support a pro-American movement in another country. If the protesters were supporting an anti-American movement, I suspect the feelings here would be different.
For my part I don't much care who rules China, nor how they go about keeping their rule over China. It's just not my business.

I read that article about "Bigger Breasts = bigger risk for cancer"....
Sounds to me like another angle of the 'global warming' thing. ....For all we know, there could be any number of other causes for why women's breast sizes might be increasing in size.
Like, I don't know....wearing bras?
Before bras came along....it was painful to have bigger breasts. ...There was no way to support them...they sagged, and were unattractive.
Fewer men mated with the women with ginormous breasts.
Thus....fewer genes were passed on, that contained the 'bigger breast gene'.
But now, a big breasted girl can buy bras....and not have that unattractive sagging...and find a husband.
Bras could be the reason why we are seeing more women with bigger breasts.

I've put on a bit of weight since then. I drink more, and I sit around more. And I'm now in my late 30s. When I weighed 155, I had a 28-inch waist, and I could only consistently find pants that fit me at thrift stores. Now 32-inch waist pants are starting to feel a little snug. I'm not sure exactly sure what I weigh now, but I'm pretty sure I'm now fat by BMI standards, with my probably 33-inch waist.
I've seen a couple of rather fit celebrities mentioned as obese by BMI standards; here's another one for that list: Tom Cruise.
The BMI is a hoax designed to provide an excuse for government action. Obesity is a crisis, man! We have to start regulating what you eat, and how much of it!

On the left coast so always stumbling in at the end of these things.
Some reactions to various comments.
Somebody already caught it, but "old school" NHL franchises do not include St. Louis or Minnesota (now Dallas) Stars. Both 1967 expansion teams. For the first few years after that, the Stanley Cup was between West and East champions, guaranteeing a St. Louis trip to the final to be crushed by a that year's Eastern champ.
And I've never been to the Staples Center, but I went to the Forum once or twice to watch a game, and skated on the ice there in a youth tournament once (skated on three NHL surfaces in my life - you would not believe how slow and crappy they are - we called them "cocktail" ice - and that's without the TV lights).
Some commenters here parade a very smooth cynical outlook but don't know much about China back then, nor do they seem to have any civilized impulses (at least the advanced sort we sort of, well used to, associate with westerners, and which actually are responsible for most of our freedoms). We see this easy, ignorant preening quite a big on things like Iraq, these days. Aside from moral failure, the failure to appreciate how things like freedom and open political systems are weapons in our arsenal is pretty dumb, however fashionable.
I don't shoot much full-house 357 from the Model 66, and only did it once from the Colt Magnum Carry (sweet, sweet, rare snubby). Kinda fun when I do, and down the road I'm sure if only from boredom I'll load some of my own (have the H110 for 30 carbine anyway, and 8 pounds is a lot to use up). Don't load the "FBI load" (158g lead hollow-point semi-wadcutter, +P), but have 'em. Remington's are reportedly the real deal - soft lead - but I also have Federals.

I try to make it clear that I'm not serious about it (even when hitting on single Moronettes), just to be on the safe side. The last thing I'd want is to have an angry Thor or Grim come knocking at my door. I think I'd rather get SWATted for talking about convicted domestic terrorist Brett Kimberlin, a.k.a. Ditto. I did mine during Nano last November. Gonna do it again this year. I highly recommend it to anyone that has even the slightest inkling that there's a book of some sort in them. Rough draft of 50K, heads down writing, stifling the inner editor, just cranking out the words. It's amazing (to me) that my results show promise.
I've got the plot for Book 2 fingered out and a rough idea for Book 3. Franchise baby! Potter/Twilight/Hunger Games payday sure to follow. Definitely.

Saw a blurb about an unmanned Drone today....one that went down in Maryland, I think it was.
Went down in a marshy area....didn't look like there were any big pieces.
So then the thought crosses my mind....[it was quick, lotta space in there]....that little unmanned drones flying around in US airspace....
....you know, snooping around, on us citizens who are just minding our own business, could be hazardous. ....For the little drone.
Might not be.
But it could be.
Because, you know....it might get mistaken for a big ole fat goose...or something.

#571 No one knows or cares about how you get to the 50K. If 'pre-writing' gets you started, go for it. Lots of ways to pad the word count if one is so inclined. Nano is completely a honor system.
I did mine within the confines of November. It helped to tell friends/family/co-workers that I was doing it - they were vicariously writing it with me, pestering me for updates and status reports. Had to do 6K words in the last day and a half but by God, I did it.

i am bringing in the big guns for this weekend and having a retired NCO friend from Grim's same line of work, come hang with us for the weekend. It seems Grim cares not all that 24 years ago i dated this guy (because he is now large and fatherly with an epic beard and looks like a mountain man) but instead trusts and loves him. I am hoping this friend can help him thru what i can not.
its been hilarious he called me today and asked how I was doin. i pretty much snarked him for not askin about Grim. He sez "Look i KNOW how Grim is and thats increasingly mean till he gets his old man in the ground. Now how you doin with that?"
Damn. I still think hes great. Best freaking thing ever that he found me on the Bookface. SO i expect there will be steaks and drinking for the weekend. And the new wife of my old friend is making her famous cranberry scones and maybe home made ginger bread!

Sad to say I know the only thing that really works is
'time.' At best, you are in for a really tough year. But the good news is it only has
to be one year.
Unresolved issues can go much longer, but they don't have to if the people involved want them to end. So, this is a good place for you to ask a pro for some suggestions on what you should be doing. (The pro will be helping you, cuz I have an instinct that grim is not the type to accept that kinda help directly - if I am right and you already know it, don't even bother to ask cuz he'll take it as an insult and that will only make things worse.)
Unfortunately, some of the pros in this field are just
batshit crazy, so choose wisely. If their advice sounds AFU to you, it
probably is. If it sounds like a good mixture of comment sense, wisdom
born from experience, and reasonable suggestions that acknowledge in
advance your potential risks in following those suggestions -- you
probably have found the right person to help. Go slow, you will be on this job for a year. You are up to it, and you will do a good job.

I'm new to most of this but can anyone explain what "patching" is. Saw
in a McCain post the BK crew was looking to "patch" Ace, and had no idea
what it meant.

Anthony Fokker was a Dutch Citizen and had his own aircraft company.
Willi Merrerschmidt was the founder Bayerisches Flugzeugwerke in Augsburg, iirc, Germany. Later to be renamed Merrerschmidt .
Thus giving rise to the mislabeling of the BF-109 as the Me-109, iirc, I hope this totally useless information enlightens your day
