FYI the blog now has more aggressive anti-spam filter so if you've been banned by mistake (as opposed to ban-banned), email me your nic and ip address and I'll forward it onto pixy. Also the new registration thingy is still on schedule for Real Soon Now but just remember that we're working on ewok-time here.
Also some of the intrepid moron-types discovered that the Yahoo group has a chat function so go knock yourselves out. Just don't get the blog in trouble or do anything that makes a three-letter agency take an interest in us.
Yeah we're racist, dog-eat-dog capitalists who allow super-income inequality, don't have national healthcare or free universities, let people live in the streets and keep too many people in prison, bla bla bla. So we suck.
But...when you compare us to other first world countries on the OECD Better Life index, it turns out that all the other countries suck a lot more than we do.
On these kind of rankings I always suspect the US gets cheated in healthcare since the scoring is heavily weighted on how 'free' medical care is. But notice that you never hear about Americans going off to Canada or France or the UK in order to get better medical treatment.
Marine Week and Marine Derangement Syndrome at DU
So apparently it's Marine Week in Cleveland and everyone is pretty happy about this - well except for a writer at Democratic Underground who really doesn't like the Marines or anything they do.
"Trust us, children . . . using one of these to blow the beJAYsus out of sovereign nations that never threatened one American citizen is a noble and just sacrifice your country's willing to make for your educations and futures."
So What Does Human Flesh Taste Like?
Like veal...maybe. The problem is that human flesh connoisseurs tend to be crazy and/or liars or very remote which makes their accounts unreliable.
Seabrook noted that, in raw form, human meat looks like beef, but slightly less red, with pale yellow fat. When roasted, the meat turned grayish, as would lamb or veal, and smelled like cooked beef. As for the taste, Seabrook wrote, "It was so nearly like good, fully developed veal that I think no person with a palate of ordinary, normal sensitiveness could distinguish it from veal."
That's Mrs. Sinclair Lewis to You
After Lewis Sinclair won the Nobel Prize in 1930 he was deluged with fan letter including one from a woman who offered to become his secretary, adding, "I'll do everything for you-and when I say everything I mean everything."
His wife, Dorothy, responded to the offer this way:
My dear Miss:My husband already has a stenographer who handles his work for him. And, as for "everything," I take care of that myself-and when I say everything I mean everything.
Dorothy Thompson
(Mrs. Sinclair Lewis to you.)
The current legality of betting online for Americans is somewhat murky, but here's how it works. Back a few years ago I did a lot of betting on baseball. I probably couldn't have made a living off of it but I did make enough money to make it worthwhile. Hockey is another sport that has lots of good wagering potential.
Can you name them all?
Okay some of these must be jokes but most aren't...which is scary. More here.

So, I'm reading this book called "History of the World in 100 Objects" by the director of the British Museum, I've griped about it on the Sunday book thread, about how part of it is interesting and part of it is political correctness run amok (The followers are Islam are a mostly peaceful and benevolent people who invented just about everything ever). But, I almost threw the book across the room last night when the chapter about an Indonesian object started with "When a young Barack Obama arrived in Indonesia he was probably amazed to see..."
WTF?? Why, what purpose on God's green earth did the director of the British Museum have in including Barack Obama's name? None, it has no place in this type of history book. Asshole.

Seeing as Europeans fight racially motivated, genocidal wars on a regular basis, it does seem odd that they are concerned about American "racism".
Hell, they just killed 100,000 of each other in the former Yugoslavia based on ethnic distinctions no one outside of Europe could even identify...

-------------------------They use their own little definition - "cannibalism" means eating humans for nutrition, whereas "anthrophagy" means eating them for fun and profit other than the protein, I think. Cute little twist on the English language, almost as cute as the wikipedia article I read recently that, in a discussion about the fate of captives taken by Native Americans, was making a distinction between torturing captives to death (nonexistant, evidently) and ritual execution of prisoners (which involved torturing them to death). Evidently it was mistake for Europeans call the practice of ritually burning and dismembering a prisoner by inches over several days as "torture."

The French. Ha-ha.
I worked for a very large French company for many years, and then our small part was sold to another company that was by law a European company, but is more oriented to the US. The CEO of our company is from another European country, but constantly makes fun of the French when he is in the US. He speaks flawless English and his impersonations of French dialect are hilarious.
We aren't the only ones that enjoy making fun of the French.

Not uncommon for people writing this kind of chex-mix o' history to attempt writing intros tying in a more current reference, as a kind of populist "hook." And what else are you going to think off the top of your head for Indonesia? "The Year of Living Dangerously?" So I wouldn't fault him for that...unless he chose to include said item solely for the purpose of inserting that hook, and I wouldn't be surprised if he did.

Believable in its incredible stupidity. The 9 Euro / hr. janitor who works 30 hours a week is certainly only 1/20 the value of a CEO who works 90 hours a week. No matter your opinion on high level execs, they run their asses off and earn a good chunk of their money, especially those outside the Fortune 500. France can say goodbye to their best executives, who will soon be moving to corporate boards in other countries.

You know how there's that aphorism that history is written by the winners? I feel like history is being re-written by the losers. I mean, to a certain extent some of the thinking has to evolve, and new discoveries shed new light on historical events, but what I hate is imbuing noble and kind behavior on disappeared cultures when we know good and well that they were brutal.

PGiS - the worst is yet to come. Wait until your son is in high school, and falls under the influence of the claptrap that is pumped out there.
My son had to read parts of Howard Zinn's book on American History because his sophomore American history teached (a Naval Academy grad) thought it was a great book. Howard Zinn was a commie, and there is no doubt about that. It made me mad every time he had to read parts of that book and write some essay about it.
It was a teachable moment (that year), and ultimately his history teacher came off as a buffoon, but that sort of nonsense has an effect on a kid's pysche.

The legal definition of homicide is the killing of a human being by another. Which this clearly is.
It does not necessarily mean a crime has been committed.

It was a ripoff of Babylon 5. Not kidding, Straczynsky sent his material to Paramount, they turned him down, and while he was coming up with funding they came out with DS9, with many similarities.
yeah well I didn't have any stations that kept a consistent syndication schedule with Babylon 5, like DS9 had.

Firefly was a great show, it just was totally the opposite of what Buck Rogers is. Dark, emo, complex, haunted pasts, gritty and dingy... if they make a new Firefly, just don't *call* it Buck Rogers. Call it Firefly.
I guess the main thing is that while Firefly was dark at times, it never seemed to take itself seriously the way Stargate or Star Trek did. That's the key thing that I'd want to keep.

The original BSG Viper was based on a Nazi jet fighter that saw a little deployment just as the war was ending for Germany. This meant there were existing model kits that could be modified to make the motion control models for the show.

I know. However, I guess I'm biased because by the last few seasons and certainly with the spin offs it had become too much like Star Trek for my taste.
BTW, Buck Rogers is actually pretty dark when you look at the materiel. In the comics America is occupied and the inhabitants are reduced to gangs living in the woods, while the TV series had Earth devastated by a nuclear war and reduced mostly to radioactive wastelands filled with mutants.

There are new comic series from publisher Dynamite, The Bionic Man and The Bionic Woman ('The Six Million Dollar Man' name is tied up and couldn't be used.) being scripted by Kevin Smith. He put a lot of thought into what made sense and what didn't int he original TV shows and what limitations were no longer a factor.
At one point in an early issue it is remarked that the cost of the project to rebuild Steve Austin is running about $6 Million a DAY. Also, he loses the intact left arm because it leaves him dangerously unbalanced, with a framework running throughout his body to hold it all together rather than expect him to apply full power through an arm attached to mere flesh.
The Bionic Woman spinoff started more recently and gave her some added abilities in keeping with the more spy-oriented theme.

Partially correct. Closing widely available lines are generally unbeatable. However, lines open and then move as the market drives them to their efficient point. It's the market that is doing a good job predicting the outcome, not the bookie. The key is to bet either 1) rogue lines - the market has moved to Lions -3, but you can get Lions -2.5 2) betting the lines before they settle at the efficient point.
Also, keep in mind that its a myth that books try to balance action. They frequently shade lines to take advantage of squares (obviously while trying to stay within risk mgmt tolerances). The classic case is "public teams" - teams like the Cowboys and the Yanks are so popular that books know they can shade those lines and the fanboys will still bet their team. Sharps will take advantage of books who shade too much. Also, local bookies tend to be a joke - very easily exploitable. Niche sports and prop bets are also frequently beatable with a little database work and some statistical training.
I've made my living betting sports for 5+ years and my biggest problem is finding books to take my action. Many of my accounts are in friends' names because I've been cut off. There is lots of volatility so emotional control, an understanding of stats, and sufficient cash reserves are necessary in order to keep from self-destructing.

Actually, it is far, far worse then that.
A big part of the cause of the mortgage meltdown was the redlining scare of the 90s, where the government-lawyer complex forced the banking industry to open the gates on giving loans to people who were likely to default on them.
One of those scumbag lawyers who sued the mortgages companies? Barack Obama.

J. Michael Straczynski, creator of Babylon 5 made a comment in the 90's about being glad Ronald Reagan had Alzheimer's, or something along those lines.
My 15 yo brother started mocking him as a horrible writer, saying he stole B5 ideas from DS9. They went back and forth for a while, it was hilarious. Straczynski, after losing the battle of wits, finally blocked my brother from responding to his posts.

How anyone can claim to be a tech guru who has never been able to figure that out is a mystery. We had a forum in the mid-90s which managed it. AOSHQ moves up to the '90s!
Also automatic parsing of paragraphs instead of clumping everything in one giant block is pretty basic tech that pixy never mastered.
Next you need to bring the site design into the 21st century. This design reminds me of the old "redbrain" site.

I, looks like Saddam to me.
J, is a sniper who looks like he's blowing a bubblegum bubble so that leaves out the Russian Front film; and it doesn't fit letter-wise for the sniper from Saving Private Ryan.
N, an American WW2 G.I.
Q, 18th century civilian or a soldier without a (tricorne) hat. Any chance the AWI Mel Gibson flick started with a Q in British and/or Euro release? Or an Alamo or an American irregular in the Mexican War flick as it looks like he's got a hair queue (ponytail).
X, reminds me of a Mexican officer type because of the peaked cap. I don't think the Japanese had peaked caps like that for officers as well as the small moustache and goatee looking a bit full for a Japanese.
Y, an American sergeant in a greatcoat so maybe Bulge related? The hairstyle doesn't ring a bell for me about the actor.

But that way knocks all the egg flavor out and you're really just tasting herbs, i like the egg/butter taste better and if it's done right they're not congealed at all, they're silky.

The reason I tossed it out there was basically to point out that there are a zillion ways to cook eggs -- and a lot of different tastes to satisfy. If the chef had said, "cook me scrambled eggs four different ways, and write proper menu descriptions of each", it would have impressed me more.

When my grandfather had his final illness, I was about 3000 miles away and due to visit in 5 weeks. I kept getting "it's a little thing"; "he's in the ICU"; "don't know what happened"; "this sort of thing looks bad".....and, finally, just said "screw it" and flew out there on a redeye. On the morning I arrived at the ICU, my grandmother called them from Emergency downstairs to say she'd be missing her regular morning visit.......whereupon the clouds parted, a light shined down from above, and I knew I had Done The Right Thing.

I'm reading a book about Rome's wars with Parthia (Iraq and Iran) from 90 BC to 250 AD or so. You guessed it - its all about the poor Parthians and Rome's bad intelligence in the wars.
At one point she says that Crassus did not gather intelligence. In the next sentence she says that he spent a year gathering intelligence. The sentence after that she says his problem was he did not gather intelligence.
No surprise that the book was written in the 2004-6 timeframe.

Too much touchy/feeley/internal political, not enough checking out and exploring the cool Ancient starship they just happened to be freaking STUCK ON. Hello? Your set IS the fucking story arc, ride it hard. Its big, its interesting, its cool. The writers must have been on crack to take the show in the directions they did. Atlantis made the same mistake of not exploiting the wonders of the city itself more. There had to be a hundred episodes worth of "wow" that never were written because some pinhead writers couldn't imagine what might be behind a hundred thousand or more unopened door knobs, instead opting to flog the Wraith (really just a slightly more nasty Ga'ould surrogate) and replicator horses again.
The ambiance seemed like they were trying to rip off BSG, which was a mistake from day-1.

The big problem with exploring either of the shows' environment is introducing new maguffins to complicate future stories. You end up with the constant "but why didn't they use the thingy from Episode X?" syndrome that in turn means tons of time given over to the characters asking and answering the question themselves.
Heck, on SGU it wasn't clear they even got around to inventorying all of the crates in the area they held. I expected one of them to contain a First Contact kit to teach Ancient to anyone vaguely humanoid and another to be the complete schematics and operating guide for the ship. Plus a source listing of the BIOS.

Wy-21 also got redistricted out and the new district will likely flip back to the repubs.
Tough luck Lehman. Sucks to be you.

Don't see how, unless they ignore the Caprica series. Establishing the roots of Cylon consciousness in recreated dead humans twisted the whole thing. It came down to two dead teenage girls throwing tantrums.

I've gotten pretty disgusted in recent years with this pattern. Half the anime coming out of Japan these days is rife with it. Here, we get stuff like Lost and BSG.
One of the reasons Fullmetal Alchemist is head and shoulders above most anime and even most fantasy series in general is the author had a real end in mind that tied up the major threads and delivered a sense of completion. There could be more stories in this world but the one we needed to know in total was delivered.

I'm of the opinion that The Simpsons high water mark was the who shot Mr. Burns story followed by a gradual decline. Anything from season 12 on is completely unwatchable shite.
It got renewed through season 25, right? Good gravy...well more than half of this series is a giant turd. It's sad that this show can be thought of as one of the best American animations as well as one of the worst.

I really don't give a flying shit how they lie to themselves. Your life is made up of the hours, minutes, and seconds between your birth and your death. run a simple test. Would you support a policy whether it was being done 'by you,' 'for you,' or 'to you?' If yes, that individual policy could be deemed to represent someone's values. If no, then it is just more bullshit with a sales pitch.
Let's take every leftist value and change it from done 'by them' or 'for them' to 'done to them' and see for yourself. I am pretty sure I know how it will come out.

slavers never change, they just change their sales pitch.
Once people realize they are mortal, they understand they cannot get more time unless they get it from other people. Slavery is the process of extending your enjoyable time by forcing someone else to do your drudgery. We will never be rid of the desire of people to have slaves.
Here is the wiki (apologize, but it is close enough for this discussion) timeline for abolition movements worldwide. http://tinyurl.com/ytc6cm
Now, if you are curious, look up the dates of the Communist Manifesto, totalitarianism, fascism, socialism, etc, etc, etc. and compare it to the abolition timeline. Every time slavery is suppressed, a new sales pitch arises to try to convince people that they should not have the title to the time of their own life.

I'm afraid of the medicinal route. We have a pro coming in tomorrow to do a treatment that involves olive oil, whatever the hell that will do.
the oil smothers and kills the adult lice. wash it out with dawn dish soap and rinse with vinegar. leave the vinegar on the hair for at least an hour. wash and condition hair with a coconut oil shampoo and conditioner. comb out the nits on a daily basis and voila' head lice problem over. keep using the coconut shampoo and conditioner and you shouldn't (fingers crossed) have the problem again.
