Enjoy Rioting?

Then the US Army (Happy Birthday BTW) wants you...to help test out their less-than-lethal weapons:

That's right, if you are over 18 and live in the greater New Jersey area, you too can get $20/hour to be whacked with batons and shot with rubber balls! The testing takes place in a non-descript one-story building, known as the Target Behavioral Response Laboratory, located a few miles from Picatinny Arsenal, the Army's research and development center.

...To that end, the Army actively recruits volunteers from local colleges and libraries to pretend to be part of an angry mob, paying them $20 an hour with the small chance of permanent injury (though all tests are supervised by the Picatinny's Institutional Review Board).

On the plus side you do get bonuses based on how many rocks you can toss through the guards.

Egypt: Yeah We're Done With That Tourism Thing

Despite accounting for at least 12% of their jobs and economy. Possible replacements include coups, camels, and sharia and sharia accessories.

Michael Totten has declared Egypt a no-go area for women due to routine sexual assaults there:

I've heard one extreme sexual harassment horror story after another from women I know who have visited Cairo. I don't personally know anyone who has been sexually assaulted in Egypt, but from my informal survey of female travelers there it appears the likelihood of a foreign woman experiencing extreme harassment approaches 100 percent.
I have no idea why this is such a huge problem in Egypt. It's not because Egypt is Arab or Muslim or Middle Eastern. Lebanon isn't like this. I understand Syria isn't either, though I'm less certain.

...The stories I've heard from women in Egypt, however, involve harassment that is aggressive, physical, and sometimes terrifying. I will never take my wife to Egypt. Never.

Meanwhile the Egyptian government itself is now running ads that discourage Egyptians from having anything to do with foreigners - otherwise they might possibly hear local complaints and learn precious souq secrets.

More Jonah Goldberg on Stuff

"Liberals are sure they're in the reality-based community and anyone who disagrees with them either has a bad brain, or in some other way rejects empiricism and science, and they are the only ones working with the building blocks of facts and reason," says National Review's Jonah Goldberg, author of the new book, The Tyranny of Cliches: How Liberals Cheat in the War of Ideas.

"And I call bullshit on that.

Speaking cliches != thinking and in fact inhibits actual real thought.

The World's Worst Password Requirements List

This one is from the Attorney General of Texas Child Support website. Any password policy this complicated is just asking for people to come up with some kind of guessable system so they can possibly log back in without having to go look it up. Too bad the AG's office doesn't read XKCD.

10 Great Science Fiction Books for People Who Don't Read Sci-Fi

Sadly I've only read three of these but then I'm probably the anti-target for this list. But here's one that's a true classic and deserves more recognition outside the sci-fi ghetto.

The Stars My Destination, Alfred Bester

If you are a staunch reader of the classics and only the classics, you may have to bend your rules for this one - an excellent sci-fi retelling of Alexandre Dumas' The Count of Monte Cristo, and an early anticipator of the cyberpunk genre. It's an epic, blood-pumping adventure, furious and darkly comic, and it will probably make you dream of jumping wherever you want to go on a moment's notice. Plus, though written in the '50s, it still winds up on just about everyone's top 10 list of sci-fi anything, so you'll garner yourself a little bit of geek cred in the process.

Oh Noes: House Hunters Is Fake?!

Well that's bummer since House Hunters and House Hunters International are quite popular in the old Maetenloch homestead.  There's no joy quite like judging complete strangers on their decisions, wardrobes, hairstyles, speaking styles and personalities  - especially when they're 27 years old and declare a 3300 sq ft house to be way too small for their needs, a new kitchen from 2006 to be 'dated', and have yet to find a house they like despite viewing 100+ homes.

Now I always figured that the producers did punch story lines up for a bit more drama, but I had no idea the entire premise was fake:

The premise of 'House Hunters' is that viewers follow a buyer as they anxiously decide between three different houses. Jensen says that, in fact, one house has already been purchased--the producers wouldn't even finalize her as a subject until after the closing. "When I watch other episodes of the show now I can usually pick out the house they were getting based on hair-dos alone," says Jensen. Houses are sometimes shot months apart. While the two rejected properties may be on the market, in Jensen's case, "They were just our two friends' houses who were nice enough to madly clean for days in preparation for the cameras!"

A former subject of the spin-off "House Hunters International" confirms that one house on the program has already been bought before filming begins.

Well I guess we can still judge - but now with only a third of the usual self-congratulation.

8 Umm yes,it is because Egypt is muslim.

Yeah, that. Egypt was always "sexist", so it never had ruling queens; but it also had history's first female kings.

This casual sexual assault, this assumption that a non-burka'ed woman is free for the taking - that's new. As one defines "new" in a place like Egypt.

9 Utterly clueless Totten apparently does not have an internet connection, or does (and doesn't know how to use it), or is actively engaged in disinformation. FGM/C. FGM/C. Fgm/C. 90% or Egyptian women have suffered FGM/C. That is roughly the percentage of Muslims in Egypt. FGM/C. Slavery, child-marriage, plural marriage, and FGM/C: pretty much the legacy of Islam. (Genocide-by-machete is more African, per se, to be fair.) Yeah, and wheels are a Colonialist legacy in much of the region. Just sayin'.

Good evening, good people.  Another sparkler of a day here.

Went to a Flag Day ceremony at our elementary school this  AM.   They have a breakfast for the vets and AD personnel, followed by some songs by the kids in honor of us.

I was struck by how thin the ranks of the WW2 vets have become.

One small bad spot during the playing of the Anthem, the young man next to me thought he would remain seated, I stood him up. He turned and looked at me, I looked right back and said nothing, just stared.  He stood quietly after that.

Aside from that incident, it was the same touching ceremony as always.

The Pyramids in Egypt.

Did you know that they were covered with marble slabs that had Egyptian pictographic writing on them?  They were quite incredible and beautiful.

Torn off the pyramids to build a mosque in what is now Cairo. About 1300 years ago, I think.

The Muslim Asian and the Muslim Arab is about the most self-destructive cultural animal force on earth.  Destroyed the historical buddhas in Afghanistan in the 90's.  Of course, that was the Taliban, just another manifestation of the Muslim.   Sure, some of them are "sorry" now, but that's just some make-believe BS to cover up for what they really believe.

Just wait 'till we have more Muslims in the US.   What a hash they are going to make of our culture.

Oddly it was "CHRISTIAN FUNDAMENTANAZIS" that created our society, and specifically the notion of a modern, free Republic.

While past behavior may not be a guarantee of future results, making your average American Christian a villain of the sort Atwood specializes in is laughable.

91 House Hunters, yeah.  At first it was novel and interesting.  After a while it got annoying to watch.  Especially when the couples were always edited the same way (one nice, one bitchy).

Oh, goody!  Books:
Gun, With Occasional Music has now gone on my reading list.  Love scifi, love pulp.  Should be fun.
The Stars My Destination also sounds interesting.

Just read Ender's Game last year.  Didn't like it much.  Especially the ending.

Dune, as written by Herbert (I won't read the rest), was good, but the series started to devolve.  Still don't get what happened in the last book.  It's been a while, though.

Atwood sounds like a bore.  I'll skip that one.

Yeah, that SF list is mostly for the shit.

Slaughterhouse-Five.  Vonnegut promised for years he was going to write a book about his experience in Dresden when it was firebombed in 1945 (he was there as a POW), but when he finally did it, I think he wrote it as a joke to make fun of all the pretentious twaddlers who thought they saw meaning in everything.

Player Piano, Mother Night.  Those were good stories.  The Sirens of Titan, funny and also full of pathos.  Cat's Cradle, bizarre satire.

Slaughterhouse Five.  Stupid. And everything he wrote after that was stupid.  I think he began to think it was all bullshit and proved it by writing bullshit and having it accepted and praised.

I love short stories, especially in anthologies.  They make and break authors.  If I'm looking for someone new to read, I'll go pick up an anthology.

It's also great when you don't have a lot of time, but want to be entertained.

The only thing I hate about short stories is when they're tacked on to a novella, but it's not clear that it's an anthology.  I Am Legend was marketed as such, significantly confusing me as to the end of the story.  I went through about three short stories of that book after I Am Legend before figuring out that they weren't connected at all.

162 AmericaÂ’s Most Biblically-Hostile U. S. President

When one observes President ObamaÂ’s unwillingness to accommodate AmericaÂ’s four-century long religious conscience protection through his attempts to require Catholics to go against their own doctrines and beliefs, one is tempted to say that he is anti-Catholic. But that characterization would not be correct. Although he has recently singled out Catholics, he has equally targeted traditional Protestant beliefs over the past four years. So since he has attacked Catholics and Protestants, one is tempted to say that he is anti-Christian. But that, too, would be inaccurate. He has been equally disrespectful in his appalling treatment of religious Jews in general and Israel in particular. So perhaps the most accurate description of his antipathy toward Catholics, Protestants, religious Jews, and the Jewish nation would be to characterize him as anti-Biblical. And then when his hostility toward Biblical people of faith is contrasted with his preferential treatment of Muslims and Muslim nations, it further strengthens the accuracy of the anti-Biblical descriptor. In fact, there have been numerous clearly documented times when his pro-Islam positions have been the cause of his anti-Biblical actions.

165 I liked most of the Dune series, aside from the travesties Frank Herbert's kid wrote.

For instance, in either the 4th or 5th book, one of the characters is almost superhero-esque, able to move as fast as lightning to outfight and slaughter his opponents. However, this super-speed requires a tremendous amount of energy (which makes sense), so he has to eat like a motherfucker after any such exertion, to replenish the exorbitant amounts he's spent.

Ever since reading that, I've found regular comic-book superheroes seem hopelessly naively-rendered, with their zero-cost "abilities".

180 HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MY ALMA MATER, the UNITED STATES ARMY.  Although, we may have to start disinheriting certain members, such as the Chief of Staff, GEN Raymond Odierno.  He was my division Commander (4 ID) in OIF I and I always thought he was the man.  Until now.  I read over at This Ain't Hell that he recently said that he wants women to go to Ranger School.  Considering he is a non-tabbed leg, I don't think he has the personal knowledge to make these sweeping decisions.  But then again, what do I know?  I'm just a knuckle-dragging mouth-breathing infantry officer that does bad things to bad people for a living.  It was bad enough when they lowered the standards to let women into Sapper School.  Now they want to destroy Ranger School, the pre-eminent combat leadership school in the entire US military.  Pretty soon I will have to quit weaing my CIB and Ranger Tab because they won't mean a darn thing.  Standards people, it's all about standards.  Do you want sheepdogs or sheep to keep the wolves at bay.

I went down to the work dining hall, I'm fairly new at my job and I bring my lunch so I don't go there a lot.

I ordered a sandwich at the deli and the woman making it made more eye contact that you'd normally get, and we chit chatted a bit.

Later that day we had an event at work, and she was apparently working at it.

I had changed clothes and was there with my son when I ran into her. She recognized me and came over to talk to the two of us and we chit chatted some more. Then she walked away, winked at him, and then winked at me.

237 What's the difference between scifi versus fantasy "lit"?
Dragons and magic.

I liked the Janissaries: Clan And Crown stuff too. I can't recall if I read just one or both of them but bound in one volume.

I can't recall if the short story was called "Ranks of Bronze" like the novella but they were about a (historical) lost Roman legion that was sold by Mideast types to space aliens who used them to conquer planets because the space version of the U.N. had a rule about not being able to use tech higher than a native culture to conquer a planet. So the aliens used the Romans to conquer Iron and Bronze Age tech level planets.

The short story was really good. It started off without revealing their situation/location but you began reading odd lines along the lines of, "I parried the barbarian's long sword and stabbed him through the bellies covering me in orange blood..." getting you saying, "Orange blood?"

John Steakley.

One of the best space-war books. It was actually two books under one cover.

I've always been annoyed that the markedly inferior Starship Troopers inexplicably got the girl (all the publicity).

Armor is an awesome book. And it has hints of literary qualities not present in much of SF. But it is a "there's a twist" book, and that limits the pleasure of the re-read. Not many "twist" books turn up on "best" lists, and I think it's because of the re-readability angle. Starship Troopers is very rereadable, and makes you think a lot, where Armor makes you feel. Matter of preference. I enjoy them both, and would not want to miss out on either, but for lasting impact, Heinlein gets my nod.

There's no reason you can't post 85 on the open flat parts, and lower speed limits where needed.

With an ordinary car made in say the last 10 years and an ordinary driver, 85 MPH is a reasonable safe speed.

See, now that's the problem with modern America - liberals pass laws to protect us from "the stupid people", the laws generally make things worse though because they are written by the stupid people.

Artificially low highway speed limit are a good case in point. We've now got laws that 90% of the populace breaks, that are enforced primarily as a revenue stream, and decrease the safety on the roads.

Consider the every day event of a Prius with an O'12 bumper sticker doing 54 in the fast lane, as road ragers zip in and out of the middle and right lane to pass him.

267 268 I would not describe it that way. Yes, Armor is more emotive, but I thought ST was heavy-handed and "message-driven," and to that extent boring. It was a lecture, and on relatively obvious subjects. I thought it was one of Heinlein's weaker efforts.

But then, as I said before, it comes down to taste.

Taste, yes, but also how you viscerally experience the book. I experienced Starship Troopers as fundamentally plot-driven, and for me the libertarian society background was normal-SF laying-out of the unaccustomed world you're in, not significantly more like a lecture than exposition about life under Martian gravity and in artifical living environments would have been in another book.

269 I have to say Starship Troopers is one of my all time favorite books.  It's one of two Heinleins that I actually love.

I guess it's one of the few preachy books I like.  Normally, that puts me off, but ST's preachy-ness just makes it better.  Not sure why.

The movie sucked... it's enjoyable to watch, but it pisses me off whenever I see it.

The movie was written first.  Then they got the rights to Starship Troopers to attach to the movie for a franchise connection.  So to claim that the movie is an adaptation of Heinlein's work should receive a cease and desist letter.

280 There is a really good collection of sci-fi short stories that was edited by Asimov and some woman, don't recall her name, but the anthology was called War of the Robots, iirc.  I have it buried somewhere in a box from the last move, and since I'm moving again in a few weeks I'm not digging for it now.  It had several really good short stories, though I won't recall the authors.  My favorites were "Though Dreamers Die" which was a prequel to a story by another author called "Robots Return", and "I Am Sam Hall", which was a dystopian future in America that was probably an uacknowledged inspiration for V for Vendetta.

313 The short-lived Harry Dresden TV series had several pretty women in it. (As one would expect from TV.)

The books are better. The shows that copy from the books directly are pretty faithful. (Except that they mixed up the order some).

Bob in the show has more flair. And Harry carries a hockey stick instead of a staff. Harry in the books comes off as somewhat older and more curmudgeonly.

There's just a whole-lot-more terrain covered in the books.

The most irritating thing about the Dresden TV series is that SciFi killed it for no good reason. One of their top shows for the year, appealed to both guys and women. But "we want to go a different direction" -> poof.

I wasn't into fantasy stuff either, except for Tolkien. The idea was horrifying. Swords and sorcery? No thanks. Never could manage to get through those George R.R. Martin fantasy books. But there's a whole new phenomenon in this area, that's worth paying attention to, and the Dresden series is a great way to pick up on it. If you like that, check out Simon R. Green's Nightside books. If you're a techie, check out The Atrocity Archives and its sequels.

And if you want to check out someone who was doing great urban fantasy (and that is the term for this new thing) long before anyone else, and who is one of my favorite authors (though somewhat uneven), pick up The Drawing of the Dark, by Tim Powers. It's set in 15th century Vienna, the enemies are Muslims, and the plot is utterly centered on beer. One of my favorite books ever.

you would be surprised in what you actually find in storage units, most of the time it's people who don't know what they actually have.

As for the shows, it's called filming a shit ton of auctions and cherry picking the lots. Plus, I would be shocked if the storage owners don't give the producers a heads up (they do go through them before auction) as it leads to more business for more auctions at the location

Peaches....my dog has been known to rub his face and mane...in the vomits.

It's happened after I give him a bath in that good-smelling shampoo...that keeps the fleas and ticks off him.

It smells divine...to me.

But the other dogs must make fun of him, smelling so good.

Because if he has to be around other dogs....after a bath....off he goes, to vomit and then rub himself in it.

358 I have a good New Jersey story. My mom was born in Trenton, and still has family there. I took my mom 2? years ago to visit her favorite cousin, who was short for this world. Cancer. Bad. She died a week later. We got to the house, and sat in the living room and visited with her daughter; it took Aunt Margie 30 minutes to build the strength to come to us. It took another 30 minutes before she could speak. Out of the blue, her daughter says, "Ma, you got company. Why don't you go make 'em a sandwich or something?" She replied, "Fuck you, Teresa! You know where everthing is. Get your fat ass in the kitchen and make 'em yourself!" I burst out laughing, and thought: that's were I get it.

368 About 35 years ago, a crazy old librarian lady stuck "A Canticle for Leibowitz" in my hand and told me to quit bothering the girls. That did not work, but I did end up reading it and got completely sucked into the genre. I still read one or two books a week to this day. I am partial to the big stories that span many books. Robert A. Heinlein - Stranger, Time, Moon, Troopers, all David Weber - Honorverse series Lois McMaster Bujold - Vorkosigan series Larry Niven - Known Space, Ringworld, Fleet, all Jerry Pournelle - Codominium (The Prince) Niven & Pournelle - Oath, Footfall, Hammer, Mote, all Frank Herbert - Dune original six (spinoffs suck) Isaac Asimov - Foundation and Robot unified series Harry Harrison - Stainless Steel Rat series Fred Saberhagen - Berserker series I could add so many more but will refrain. The fantasy genre never hooked me with a few exceptions: J.R.R. Tolkien - the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings trilogy J.K. Rowling - Harry Potter series Lois McMaster Bujold - Chalion series All vampire and werewolf books suck and their inclusion in the science fiction category annoys me. They belong over on the horror shelves.

382 The book is always better than the movie is a tired cliche but true. Even so, the movies with Heinlein titles, without exception, sucked horribly when compared to the books. What they did to Dune was disgraceful. Other than casting Jessica well and good-for-the-day fx for the worms, that movie was an unmitigated disaster. They squeezed a lot of the juice out of LOTR & HP but the casting was mostly excellent and the story was at least recognizable.

Been keeping up with the news lately? Anyway, your list is good, but not quite fair. Andrew McCarthy has some very worthwhile things to say from time to time, as does Kudlow, and Lowry, and others whose names I have not taken note of. There may be squishiness from time to time there, but it is on the whole a very very worthy site, and we would be much less well off without it.

Yes, I think that's right. He seems very beatable now, doesn't he? It does sap the anger, somehow. But there will be, at some point, maybe not until their unholy Convention, a series of "Obama has his Mojo back!" stories in the Democrat Media, and a more formidable foe in prospect. Then will come the long threads. And if, Heaven forbid, the Narcissist-in-Chief actually gets a second term, this place will boil. I'd settle for shorter threads, and a President who knows what the hell an economy is.

They still haven't fixed the "from page 300, "back" takes you to page 1" bug, they've had that since the beginning. Bookstores were my first encounter with offensively bad organization, though. I've built into my "universe" a "lost world" of super genetic-engineers, so it's certainly possible. Maybe along with the thing about the gas giant with the rare gas and oxygen upper atmosphere. I am working on a fantasy dragon book, but by "working on" I mean ten pages of notes and half of the first chapter. So, not that much. I believe in whatever the opposite of "gritty or realistic" is when it comes to dragons. I decided that my dragon's legs are mistake for tree-trunks on occasion.

Frederic Brown is remarkable, but very uneven. For many of the books, I have to be in just the right mood (e.g. "The Fabulous Clipjoint", the Martians book, "The Screaming Mimi"). But "The Mind Thing" is good straight SF with a lot of tension and a great alien conception, and Night Of The Jabberwock, my favorite book of his, is neither SF nor mystery, I don't know what to call it, except I call it one of my favorite books, very easy to read, and pure fun in words. I've reread it many times, with pleasure.

So you're saying he's like the 80's version of the Flash? Wally West, who was merely able to do about Mach 1 in the early days after he took up the job after they killed off Barry Allen. A long running storyline was his attempts to regain his former much greater speed and lack of need to consume enough calories for an army.

You know, that comic book character with the zero-cost powers?

On the other hand, given all the other prescription drugs I'm on, that's kind of like pissing into a hurricane. I only take it when I have gout. I don't take painkillers for headaches or sore muscles. I don't actually overdo it. But I'm not supposed to take it at all because of my heart meds (don't worry, I know why, I'm not playing with fire). Besides, when the gout hits I cut back on my diuretics, so I'm basically doing no *additional* harm with the advil, because the diuretics fry your kidneys, too.

If my condition improves as a result of that, and I think it will, I get to try to go back to work in this economy, and try to put whatever little shreds of my life are left back together. As far as diet and gout, we can talk a bit, but I have SOOOOO much bigger fish to fry. I'm actually a research junkie and the studies on this are not very good. I take four prescription medications daily: A statin, to keep me stupid and tractable; a diuretic because everyone evidently needs one or they'd back up with pee until they 'sploded; some fancy-pants something-or-other to keep me from dropping dead from some other cause than pee-'splosion; and allopurinol for the gout. The only one I worry about is the gout stuff, 'cause screwing up the dose either way is a serious chance to bring the pain.

On the flip side, I went into an examination recently and got to try out a rant I'd been concocting: "How come you keep coming up with boring medieval stuff like "gout"? Why don't you diagnose something with a latin name, like Pasteurella pestis -- or an acronym, like ALS -- or something named after a city, like Marburg....or a person, like Hansen's disease or Hodgkin's lymphoma?" My doctor actually paled a bit, and stammered out, "you wouldn't want those...." until he realized that nobody would pull a list like that out of a hat (the diseases named are Black Death, Lou Gehrig's disease, a flavor of ebola, leprosy, and a type of cancer). Punk'd.

Posted by: Richard at June 15, 2012 04:06 AM (0jyYB) I am always looking for new docs. I found one who seems to have a brain in his head in LA, but he's recovering from surgery. I have fired 5 cardiologists. The last two were just poor communicators, or their staff were, and they were pedestrian thinkers and incurious.

589 I'm just starting to feel like what passes for normal for me.

It started last Friday when I headed out to my car to take care of a friend's dog because he was going to be home much later than usual.

I couldn't find the car. Where did I last use it? I vaguely remembered that I might have pulled up in front of the garage of our unit to unload groceries. I would then have to move out on the street by the complex because my sister and mother get the garage and parking space nearby. Did I forget to move it and got towed some time in the early AM?

It took an annoying number of calls to the Sheriff's department to get an answer. Which was yes. The utter bastards in the security company the HOA hired know about all of our cars and which unit they go to. It's a requirement that we list them for the HOA. The bastards couldn't walk thirty feet to my front door and ask me to move the car?

Meanwhile, there is a fire in the hills a bit north of here and traffic is seriously backed up. I got the tow yard on the phone and had an infuriating hassle getting them to give me a proper address. And they close at 4:30 PM. It's 4 PM now. The charge is $250 and will go up to $350 if don't get it today.

Nobody can possibly get to me in time to take me over there even if I could find the place on the first try. I try directing my mother and sister to the task remotely but one cannot get away from work, which is less than two miles from the tow yard, and the other is not very good at taking directions over the phone. Or in person. Or via ouija board. I've tried them all.

So Saturday comes around and I'm driving my mother's Explorer with her in the passenger seat and driving me up the wall while trying to find the place. It finally got to the point where I parked, left the keys in the ignition and walked off. The other option was matricide. She just couldn't get it through her head how murderously angry I was and how being completely quiet was highly desirable.

After much wandering I find the place and discover it's closed on the weekend. What a fucking scam. They steal your car and hold it for ransom. And they have severely limited hours so that your chances of retrieving the car without racking substantial extra charges and/or missing work  is extremely low. I didn't end up getting the car back until Monday and it cost me $450. Between that and repairs I've spent a fair bit more than the car's Blue Book value on continuing to own it.

Meanwhile, it's late Saturday morning, I'm in a mood to commit grievous mayhem, and I'm on foot about fifteen miles from home. And I walked it. No big deal in my youth. If I'd been more patient I might have caught a bus most of the way but trying to sit and wait at one of the pickup locations was too much. I stopped by two store where I might have bought a bicycle, something I'd been considering lately anyway. But neither had them ready to ride.

Damn near killed myself. In my anger I'd chosen not to take my blood pressure meds the night before because I've gotten so fed up with being half-asleep all day. So I was really tempting fate but it probably helped a bit too with the endurance. By the time I got home I could barely move and had a huge blister on the ball of each foot. I could barely move Sunday morning. When I paid the ransom on Monday morning they must have thought I had some crippling disease like ALS or something.

I was never in good shape but youth sure did have its advantages. There was a time when I'd only have needed a few hours to recover from such a journey.

590 Posted by: epobirs at June 15, 2012 04:58 AM (kcfmt) Word, homey. I hope this weekend is at least not a complete fucking disaster for you. Personally I am also sick and limping and on annoying medicine and if they take my car I could not pay for it. I know somebody who lost an SUV to a tow company who sold it before they could pick it up, and they couldn't afford to sue. I loaned them a car (because I was in the miracle position of having two). We Are Morons, And Our Motto Is "FML!"

591 Sometime we'll have a long chat about obsolete computer hardware. I saw this cargo container full of old computers for sale and drooled, but it was crazy expensive and where would I put it?

592 I hope you get (or got) some sleep tonight. I need to do that now. Good luck.

593 Thersa, glad your ok. I used to be a red cross disaster team guy, fires were most of the work - not the big floods and hurricanes. First, I hope you have your own insurance and aren't subletting. Sign nothing without having someone read it with you. Esp. from the building's insurance guy or "inspector". Get your renter's policy to send an inspector. The field guys from the insurers are generally good guys, the screwing comes later. Get the names and phone numbers of all your neighbors, make sure everyone is getting the same deal. Put a written cap on the time your staying with family, after that they will need to pay for displaced housing. You need a point of contact from your management office and both insurance companies. If you really need immeadiate emergency cash, get it from the redcross not their insurance company or from management guys. Might as well go to Staples and get a binder started, first tab should be copy of your lease. Professionally clean ALL your clothes, dont under estimate this cost or accept the insurers estimate. Rugs and upolstrey may have to go, unless it has sedimental value. The same with anything you might want sell someday: furniture, electronics, etc. Just because you cant smell the smoke on it, doesnt mean someone else wont. Trying to get recompensation down the road will be difficult. They should be on the hook for cut-off charges for utilites and phone/tv/internet. Cut them off or suspend them, the providers have special plans to handle this. Have your mail held. We used to have a checklist for the seemingly mudane stuff, you dont want to walk back into hundreds of dollars of cable and utility bills. Relocate, you really dont want to be walking by the place where the guy died everyday, I have seen some odd delayed shock psych stuff. The ARC usually has a shrink type availible, just have a chat. They should pay all relocation costs and you can get them to pay any rent difference for remaining term on your lease. Buy your own smoke detector, never rely on the building's unit. Habituate yourself to its sound. If you live a couple of floors up, move. We cycled thru helping out on a garden complex fire, the "immeadiate disaster" assistance work on that was going strong six months later. This is not going to be a simple process, document everything.

594 Thersa, escrow your rent. Most places have a habitability law, so you cant be charged rent while you cant live there. However, your definition of liveable and theirs may vary and they might try to clawback some cash. So, open a seperate savings account and drop your rent into it. Later, it could be a nice nest egg.

595 Sounds like the ONT took a turn for the morbid last night.  It's a new day folks!  Thank the lord for your blessings and keep moving.

596 @235 I had changed clothes and was there with my son when I ran into her. She recognized me and came over to talk to the two of us and we chit chatted some more. Then she walked away, winked at him, and then winked at me. ---- Hey, 18-1, I had to leave the thread last night, but this sure sounds like flirting to me. Find out more about her and ask her out.
