Overnight Open Thread (6-17-2012) – Father's Day Edition
— Maetenloch

Since I was out most of the day doing Father's Day-family kinda stuff, you get the semi-cop-out ONT. But you also get the Daddy Saddle to go along with it.

 Daddy Saddle

Beau Biden: Keeping The Retarded Family Tradition Alive

Like high-functioning, gaffe-prone father like son I guess.

[Son of VP Biden and former DE AG Beau] Biden mentioned that Romney didn't seek a second term as Massachusetts governor, suggesting his failed economic policies hurt him. "I've never met a successful politician who didn't run again," said Biden, the Delaware attorney general.

The crowd collectively groaned.

Why? Well this is why:

Third, and most immediately importantly: Beau Biden made these comments at a North Carolina Democratic fund-raising dinner. North Carolina's current (Democratic) governor is Bev Perdue - who is, of course, not running for re-election, and not by her own choice. Which is why the crowd, as newsobserver.com put it, "collectively groaned.

And like his father he also had a stroke while still young.

14 My father passed away 6 years ago at the age of 82, a pretty good stretch. I think the best tribute to him came from someone I rented his house to:

"Carla last night said that while I am at work and she is home cleaning she senses a good presence around her. While she is cleaning, scrubbing and doing little things she senses someone standing off to the side with a closed smile. As she scrubs the bathroom tubs and the shell bowl sinks (which are hard due to the curves but she loves them) she senses the person chuckle. She felt the same thing when you and I were struggling with the washer. Even though she is alone all day and in a new city, she feels very safe and protected there."

35 Didn't I say that the Greek election would not change a thing?

What was it, something like a quarter of a percent diff?

Anarchy will continue there forever, or at least until they run out of rubber bullets and tear gas.  After which it will change from anarchy to absolute civil war such as we are seeing in Syria.

And what are we headed for here in the nice safe and civilized US of A?  Maybe an eighth of a percent diff, with some kind of a state situation like FL in 2000, only this time it might get physical.

Sharpton calls it Raaaaacist. (the stereotype about blacks and swimming).

All we need now is to find he was high on pcp and drove a Hyundai into the pool.

Anyone else have a hyundai that has EVER reached that speed? I'm just saying that the cops exaggerated a little when they made out the report.

Forget about that one.  Add to that:  Didn't cheat on his wife even when he had the chance to with a smoking hot woman 15 years her junior, beat up guys who were trying to use his daughter, and stayed with his family even when there was clearly little joy in it for him.

It's easy to be good dad when you have a hot wife who loves you, a great job, and successful kids.  Al Bundy?  Al was at rock bottom.  Everything was a test of will.  Obviously, he wins this by a mile.

WATCH: Kate Upton plays football in sky-high heels
http://tinyurl.com/7mcbox2

Upton graciously accepted the show's football challenge, despite wearing a Chanel jacket, black skintight jeans and a pair of sky-high Christian Louboutins. Standing alongside New York GiantsÂ’ defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul, Upton was tasked with tossing a football into a tiny net. She confidently picked up a football, cradled it and tossed it. But while her spiral was respectable, it was not enough to make Sanchez proud. She missed the net.

NATO dragged us into an aggressive war (waged without UN approval, I might add) in the Balkans, for which we got continued sneering by the Europeans, as well as Russia's eternal hatred. Russia used to really like us after Communism fell, but Clinton's little jaunt in Bosnia set them against us. I am convinced that Putin wants to knock the U.S. down a peg for just that reason. And then there was Libya. Funny how all the left's "war for oil" idiots were silent, especially since Libya was a war for Europe's oil. This will not end well...

168 Got this in my email today

Checking out at the store, the young cashier suggested to the older woman that she should bring her own grocery bags because plastic bags weren't good for the environment.

The woman apologized and explained, "We didn't have this green thing in my earlier days."

The clerk responded, "That's our problem today. Your generation did not care enough to save our environment for future generations."

She was right -- our generation didn't have the green thing in its day.

Back then, we returned milk bottles, soda bottles and beer bottles to the store. The store sent them back to the plant to be washed and sterilized and refilled, so it could use the same bottles over and over. So they really were recycled. But we didn't have the green thing back in our day.

Grocery stores bagged our groceries in brown paper bags, which we reused for numerous things. Most memorable besides household garbage bags was the use of brown paper bags as book covers for our school books. This was to ensure that public property (the books provided for our use by the school) was not defaced by our scribblings. Then we were able to personalize our books. But, too bad we didn't do the green thing back then.

We walked up stairs because we didn't have an escalator in every store and office building. We walked to the grocery store and didn't climb into a 300-horsepower machine every time we had to go two blocks. But she was right. We didn't have the green thing in our day.

Back then, we washed the baby's diapers because we didn't have the throw-away kind. We dried clothes on a line, not in an energy gobbling machine burning up 220 volts -- wind and solar power really did dry our clothes back in our early days. Kids got hand-me-down clothes from their brothers or sisters, not always brand-new clothing. But that young lady is right; we didn't have the green thing back in our day.

Back then, we had one TV, or radio, in the house -- not a TV in every room. And the TV had a small screen the size of a handkerchief (remember them?), not a screen the size of the state of Montana . In the kitchen, we blended and stirred by hand because we didn't have electric machines to do everything for us. When we packaged a fragile item to send in the mail, we used wadded up old newspapers to cushion it, not Styrofoam or plastic bubble wrap. Back then, we didn't fire up an engine and burn gasoline just to cut the lawn. We used a push mower that ran on human power. We exercised by working so we didn't need to go to a health club to run on treadmills that operate on electricity. But she's right; we didn't have the green thing back then.

We drank from a fountain when we were thirsty instead of using a cup or a plastic bottle every time we had a drink of water. We refilled writing pens with ink instead of buying a new pen, and we replaced the razor blades in a razor instead of throwing away the whole razor just because the blade got dull. But we didn't have the green thing back then.

Back then, people took the streetcar or a bus and kids rode their bikes to school or walked instead of turning their moms into a 24-hour taxi service. We had one electrical outlet in a room, not an entire bank of sockets to power a dozen appliances. And we didn't need a computerized gadget to receive a signal beamed from satellites 2,000 miles out in space in order to find the nearest burger joint.

But isn't it sad the current generation laments how wasteful we old folks were just because we didn't have the green thing back then?

Please forward this on to another selfish old person who needs a lesson in conservation from a smart ass young person...

We don't like being old in the first place, so it doesn't take much to piss us off!

227 An Ashland woman says she buried a safe containing $262,000 in gold Krugerrands in her backyard two years ago. But when she went to dig it up earlier this year, it was gone.

On March 15, the woman reported to police that the safe was missing, but since then police have exhausted all leads and the case is dormant, said Ashland police Sgt. Jim Alderman. Police will not release the victim's name, because of the high dollar amount involved.

The case was complicated by the woman's refusal to let anyone conduct an extensive search of her property.

"She refuses to have her backyard excavated or allow anyone to search with a metal detector," said Alderman.

The woman told police she began buying gold in 2006. She said when she returned to dig up the safe, she found other containers of money and precious metals that she had buried, but not the safe.

According to investigators, there was no evidence of fresh digging on the property. They theorize that if the safe were stolen it could have happened shortly after it was buried in 2010. The woman was able to provide police with receipts for the gold, proving that it was at one time in her possession.

That is why my favorite use for solar power is recharging mobile devices like phones. I would feel incredibly stupid to be in need of help and unable to summon it because I didn't have any means to charge the battery.

I also really like crank generators as part of a flashlight and that can be used to charge stuff. It's a fascination for me but like insurance you hope to never need it for real. But damn won't you feel studly if you save the day when all seems lost, merely because of a gadget penchant channeled the right way.

(Requiem for Methuselah), a planet inhabited by aliens who look like steaming piles of shit who make Kirk and Spock battle history's biggest baddies (The Savage Curtain), and wrapping up with Kirk's body being taken over by a crazy ex-girlfriend and his mind put in her body. Imagine Kirk waking up and finding out he's got tits (Turnabout Intruder)

364 To all you Dads out there Happy belated Daddys day. BTW that kid on the Daddy saddle is gonna shoot his own eye out. I got a call from my wife and daughter today, it made my day! I'm working overseas trying to make ends meet so it was real special and brought a tear to my old recalcitrant eye. I called my Daddy too. He danced through France and Germany and was there when Berlin fell. Ain't too may of them fellers left..the Greatest Generation IMHO! I hoped you called your Dad, time is short and you can never buy it back. Ole Jack Death is clocking everyone.

368 Reading IOTW, someone posts a passage from Proverbs. Proverbs 31: 10-31 A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies. Her husband has full confidence in her and lacks nothing of value. She brings him good, not harm, all the days of her life. She selects wool and flax and works with eager hands. She is like the merchant ships, bringing her food from afar. She gets up while it is still night; she provides food for her family and portions for her female servants. She considers a field and buys it; out of her earnings she plants a vineyard. She sets about her work vigorously; her arms are strong for her tasks. She sees that her trading is profitable, and her lamp does not go out at night. In her hand she holds the distaff and grasps the spindle with her fingers. She opens her arms to the poor and extends her hands to the needy. When it snows, she has no fear for her household; for all of them are clothed in scarlet. She makes coverings for her bed; she is clothed in fine linen and purple. Her husband is respected at the city gate, where he takes his seat among the elders of the land. She makes linen garments and sells them, and supplies the merchants with sashes. She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come. She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue. She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: “Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all.” Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised. Honor her for all that her hands have done, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate. Can you imagine the reaction you'd get if you said to your honey, "Baby, you're like a merchant ship."?

370 That Proverbs post was great. Hey after 3 times I have a great wife. I told her today, I walked down more than halfway on this road of life and I would be honored to walk the rest of the short way with you. I said I'm not a very good person, my temper is not good, I'm an old outlaw and would rather shoot a feller than look at them. She told me, You may not the be the very best..but you are the very best for me and the family. You did everything us. I guess that's what a guy lives for, at least me anyway. Please return to the moronic discussions at hand.

376 China's Shenzhou-9 spacecraft has successfully docked with the Tiangong-1 space station module. It was China's first manned docking, which had previously only been accomplished by the United States and Russia. From the looks of it, it went off without a hitch. http://www.nasaspaceflight.com/2012/06/ chinas-shenzhou-9-successfully-docks-with-tiangong-1/

So let's not be too smug about past Daddy's being too indulgent, shall we?

P.S.  Someone's buying these and I have a suspicion SHE gets a real big charge out of it.

My back hurts just looking at that picture.
