What America Spends On Groceries
Well the good news is that we're spending a lot less than we did 30 years ago - from 13% of our income in 1982 to only 8% today. Which for normal people is a Good Thing - but of course must be a very terrible thing on the hand-wringing left.
And the biggest reason we spend less is because most food - especially meat and dairy products - is far, far cheaper these days. In fact I'm pretty sure I could create a whole new diet craze based just on these newly cheap foods - Delicious AND Cheap!
But, but, but doesn't this just mean that the ignorant sheeple American people aren't spending as much on fruits and vegetables today?! </concerned hand-wringing>
Nope - the percentage of food money spent on fruits and vegetables is virtually unchanged at 14.5%.
#Occupy Wall Street Fights the Patriarchy, Defends Child Fucking
Now you'd think that opposing the trafficking and prostituting of children would be the one thing that everyone could agree on - us, them, and even the aimless pseudo-hippie #Occutards. But you'd be wrong:
Whatever our opinions on other issues, we all agree that sex trafficking and the prostituting of children is an outrage and a tragedy. Thus, conference attendees included liberal, moderate and conservative politicians; progressive non-profit organisations; law enforcement groups; religious leaders; and (according to the conference website) "social services, medical providers, mental health, education, probation, and community-based organisations." In short: Everybody. Everybody, that is, except Occupy Wall Street, who somehow found a way to oppose the abolition of child sexual slavery
Why? Because it's just the uptight man keeping youthful sex workers from self-actualizing via renting out their orifices or something. That or it's the man and evil capitalism degrading young people by forcing them to lease out their orifices. Or both.
The protesters' main banner said "Fucking to survive is life under capitalism." This sums up the nearly incomprehensible cognitive dissonance at the core of the Occupy Oakland Patriarchy philosophy. They manage to hold two mutually exclusive thoughts simultaneously: 1. We are sex workers and proud of it, and there is nothing wrong with prostitution, so stop oppressing us with your prudish laws; And, 2. The only reason we are compelled to have this degrading and unpleasant profession is that capitalism forces people to exchange labour for money - only a total anti-capitalist revolution can put an end to prostitution.
Neal Rauhauser's Master Plan Revealed
A lot of commenters have been confused by the bogus court actions of Brett Kimberlin and wonder why he keeps filing complaints and lawsuits that have absolutely no basis. Well his associate, Neal Rauhauser, basically revealed their master plan in tweets over a year ago. Here the legal process is the punishment.
"People engaged in provocative online conduct feel insulated; they're in the comfort of their own home, if they've engaged in a little bit of caution they may feel completely anonymous, and this emboldens them. Specifying the strategy we'll use to break their anonymity won't permit any mitigation on their part without adjusting their behavior, which counts as a win for us. We're dealing with people who have likely had no interaction with the court system beyond a traffic ticket; the potential for a pro se litigant to force them into expensive, long distance, lengthy, discovery laden litigation doesn't seem to cross their minds."
- Neal Rauhauser (aka "Stranded Wind"), Aug. 29, 2010
What's The Best Music To Torture With?
Well anything repeated often and long enough. I used to like steel drum music but after Hell Week as a pledge I could live an entire life devoid of steel-drums and be perfectly happy.
Guards at Guantanamo Bay tried to coerce inmates into talking with songs from Sesame Street played on repeat, according to a new Al-Jazeera documentary. (The Pentagon on Thursday acknowledged music has at times been used as a "disincentive," but "in a measured way" that did not amount to mistreatment or torture.) Past reports on "torture music" in the U.S. war on terrorism have described CIA and military interrogators using albums from Eminem and the death-metal band Deicide to break prisoners' resistance.
.Meanwhile, a 2008 article in the Guardian identified "I Love You" by the children's show character Barney as one of U.S. interrogators' preferred instruments of persuasion.
Oh Noes: Hebrew National Kosher Hot Dogs Not Actually Kosher?
Well that what a lawsuit alleges:
Hebrew National, known for its kosher meat products and tagline "We answer to a higher authority", now has to answer to a Minnesota court because of a lawsuit alleging that its products are not completely kosher.
The class-action lawsuit, filed by 11 individual consumers in May, accuses ConAgra Foods - Hebrew National's parent company - of several procedures that made the meat non-kosher, reported the American Jewish World. The plaintiffs argue that the firm AER, which did the meat processing and slaughtering for ConAgra, failed to meet the requirements needed to label Hebrew National products as 100% kosher; they also claim that AER fired or transferred employees who complained that the meat was non-kosher.
In this case the higher authority may end up being the FDA and the Minnesota Supreme Court.
Here's a brand new UAV design from Lockheed Martin that could end up being the most efficient ever if it pans out. I like the 'Statue of Liberty' launch technique.
For anyone who's lived in an area where maple trees grow, you've probably seen these seeds falling from the trees. They're asymmetrical wings which spiral gently down, and can travel for a fair distance on the wind. Lockheed Martin has used this design with motor to allow for sustained flight, and software provides control. The whole vehicle spins, including the camera, but the operator sees a steady picture thanks to image processing. It's a radical design, and I think it looks pretty cool.

They're the ones vulnerable to lawsuits like we've seen.
Wait until they come up against someone with nothing to lose and experience in the civil legal system.
Two can play that game. I'm hoping that Aaron Walker will be able to shut them down but sooner or later they're going to run into someone who's unemployed with no children and plenty of time to pursue the art of pro se litigation, interrogatories, discovery, counter suits, default judgments due to defendant not appearing, protective orders, change of venues due to hardship and oh yes, the under oath deposition at the defendants nearest court.
When you're filing under pro forma pauperis (that's legalese for I'm too poor for a fucking lawyer) you can file lots and lots of stuff that you normally wouldn't if you were paying a guy in a suit to do it.
Surprisingly, it's not that complicated. It's when it gets into court in front of a judge that it can get tricky and things can go sideways (as we've seen) but even there, BK and NR are vulnerable due to their past antics on the internetz for all to see. They've just been a little sharper than their opponents.
So far.

Holder, speaking in the Capitol Rotunda to reporters, said he had come “in good faith” and that he had made a number of documents, specifically those from February to December of 2011, available.
Asked if he thought he and his department could avoid the contempt vote, Holder said, “The ball’s in their court.”
But Issa said, “Today, the Attorney General informed us that the Department would not be producing those documents. The only offer they made involved us ending our investigation.”

You are paying MORE for LESS today. Check the packaging for weight. Many canned items that are sold by weight (Canned beans for example) still weigh correctly but there is more water and fewer beans.
And I want to see where you can buy a full pound of coffee for the current pricing.

No, it's simply Ace taking back control of his blog.
Dagny made a mistake in Ace's eyes, and he called her out. Whether it was reasonable is secondary to the reality that this blog is Ace's to do with what he wishes.
We have been given a tremendous amount of leeway, and some people took advantage of it and threatened Ace's livelihood and, perhaps, his and his family's safety.
Dagny was a casualty of thAce's fight to reclaim his blog, but I think (hope) that she will come back, even though she is a Papist.

Calleed the # on his tag, the people live 3 streets over and they were frantic. They said he never roams, but I kinda think Orvie wanted to socialize a bit. So he just chewed his rope and visited.
He's home now, likely still wagging that tail and licking every face he can reach.
Posted by: irongrampa at June 19, 2012 11:41 PM (SAMxH)
The methLabs do what they want. They're just such terrific dogs because mostly what you want them to do and what they care to do line up...until they decide that after months of good behavior, it's time to roam around, and maybe roll in a pill of deer scat if any is of a good vintage. Sadly, to them all deer shit is a good vintage. The worst part is the way they come home, covered in mud and stink, with that low tail wag that says "I know, I messed up, but I had to do this!". They always know you're going to hose them off and love on 'em again within a couple hours.

Posted by: Niedermeyer's Dead Horse at June 19, 2012 11:44 PM (piMMO)
Sort of. He got read the riot act for dropping a little gem on an ONT about a year and a half ago. Problem was that about 2/3 of the way through the comments, the daughter of "mystry", a long time poster, informed us that he had passed. The ONT had taken a different tone after that, but Gator hadn't caught up in the comments yet, so he posted something that didn't go over well. It was also in the weeks after the infamous "Blaz#r" incident. The cob-loggers were a little on edge, so he got threatened with a ban, but he left on his own.

I love when people "experiment" with weed...as though Meggie BigMac was testing some kind of hypothesis or something before forming her opinion or whether it should be legal.
It is the intent of the authors to choof from a bone of representative size in order to ascertain the following: a) will the authors become "high"? b) will said effect, if it is real, affect behavioral changes, and finally, c) what will be the qualitative effect observed by the authors when consuming Taco Bell? The baseline value for enjoyment of the "Five Buck Box" has been established as "necessary for survival at least twice weekly." Should the effect referenced in point A be found to be real, then will the enhancement of said box is expected to reach a level between "OMG this is the best thing ever" and "I just rubbed the contents on my pants and am now greedily scraping them into my face sans napkins or silverware...there are seven levels to the truth?"

A few prices that I can generally remember over the last ten years
Soda 2 liter: $.99->$1.89
Bread loaf: $2->$4

Ham lunch meat lb: $3.99->$6.99
and so on.

Friend --
Something big happened in Richmond last week -- and a couple millionaires and billionaires are hoping you didn't notice.
The U.S. Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals affirmed last week that groups like the Koch brothers' Americans for Prosperity and Karl Rove's Crossroads GPS should have to disclose exactly who's behind the millions of dollars they're spending to influence this election.
They're going to try to avoid this for as long as they can. After all, they have a vested interest in being able to spend millions anonymously to influence our elections -- many of the corporations and individuals funding their organizations don't want their agendas to receive scrutiny from the press or the public.
We can make sure they don't get away with hiding these donors -- or their agendas. But it's going to take a lot of us standing up, putting our foot down, and saying "Hell no."
We've put together a petition demanding that these secret front groups disclose for the country exactly who their donors are. Do what these guys won't do: Let the country know exactly what you stand for by adding your name today.
Ask yourself: Don't we all have a right to know exactly which corporations and individuals are spending millions in attack ads to influence elections -- and what their agendas are?
If you agree, add your name today:
More soon,
Messina
Jim Messina
Campaign Manager
Obama for America
And I feel confident that they will reveal all those foreign donations they took last campaign, right?

How many other homosexuals think like this? I am going to put out there that they all do. At least, upward of 90% of them do; which means that within that community, those who think otherwise are those that are abnormal. If Savage's audience were less than 10%, this man would not have a column; he would be making a living begging at intersections. (He wouldn't even be able to turn tricks.)
The fact - it is a fact - that Dan Savage has a (large) fanbase proves that most homosexuals are like him; anti-human. They know that they are perverts and they hate themselves for it.

Happens all the time around here. A 3Ghz P4 Hyperthread is a few years old, and non-technical people get some crazy money quote from a shop to "repair" it and they give up and just buy a new one. I'm guessing the 200G Baracudda probably wasn't what shipped with it. The MoBo is a fairly credible BioStar, not some weird shit.
Even being some years old, its gonna be a lot more formidable than the ancient 600Mhz PIII I'm typing on now. With XP loaded it'll be able to run the Android SDK, which is what got me really excited about it. For whatever reason, the pinheads at Google demanded XP as a minimum for the SDK to work.
The thing must have been doing a write to the drive when the memory farkled, and the MBR and drive contents were trashed, but I found an XP Home ISO on the torrentz and it worked OK with the OEM's COA CD key label on the cover.

I think a large part of this is that they're adjusting out "background" inflation. So a normal home went from $75K to $150K while a loaf of bread went from $1.25 to $3.50....but the bread only "increased" $1, 'cause the other doubling is the same that happened with the house.

Check the sizes of what you are buying. 2 years ago the small box of Tide was $7.99, today it is still $7.99. Difference, the small box then was "40 loads", now it is "32 loads". If the detergent had stayed at "40 loads" it would cost $9.99 for the box. Other products have been downsized, but the cost has stayed the same. 16oz cans are now 14ish ounces. One pound rolls of sausage are now 12 ozs. Shit like that. Hell, even toilet paper and paper towels have less or smaller sheets per roll.

So if the other manufacturers went broke . . .

Yea, its a completely frivolous and stupid, but I've given up on substance as a way to make money and have embraced the creation and sale of what amounts to electronic pet rocks. It took me a few months of soul searching to square my spartan functional nature with the production of ephemeral crap sold to idiots that appeals to their baser more feral instincts, but I'm all in now. I've embraced the suck.
There will be a higher end pricier actually useful version that's applicable to LE and military, bu I expect the bulk of sales will be to the teens.

You know how you get those recommendations over in the box on the left... Well, last week I started following Bill Murray and then Randy Quaid and got a recommendation to follow Charlie Sheen (no thank you) and then a recommendation that I follow his porn-star girlfriend, Bree Olsen (NO THANK YOU).
I read her profile and I have been puzzled ever since: Vegan by day, maneater by night
If you are eating several dozen dicks a year.... If you are screwing Charlie Sheen... then why the hell would you take a stand on eating animals? For her health? Because it's immoral?
Really. I'm perplexed.

Probably illegals. Did you read about the kosher stands in the WIki link I posted earlier? If PETA were really concerned about the welfare of the animal alone, they could simply recommend kosher meats.
And yeah.... $4.50 for a loaf of Pepperidge Farms now.

I scoffed at such things my whole life, but as I've gotten older and beaten up enough times trying to do things of real substance my idealism has waned.
I've done enough in my career that produced real value for tens of millions of customers that I don't have to feel too guilty about selling out now.
I find the phone app thing pretty appealing because it something I can produce and pimp at home without having to dance to someone else schedule, or having to work in a brick/mortar site with a bunch of incomps. I'm nocturnal by nature, which doesn't fit well with traditional engineering dev work at most outfits. I'm also very "bursty" and might spend weeks staring at a wall, then suddenly crank out 6 months worth of very high quality production in a matter of days. Most businesses have a hard time understanding engineers who work that way.
I guess its the whole lefty non-linear thinking INTJ thing...my subconcious sorts it all out and shit springs forth pretty much fully formed.

Depends on how much effort you put into shopping. I got the new batch of supermarket ads from today's mail here.
Vons has 7-Up brand (includes AampW Root Beer, etc) for 88 cents for a 2-liter bottle. Stater Bros. has the same price and also on Pepsi brands. Ralphs is asking $1 each for the Pepsico 2-liter options.
Albertson's has 2 for $5 on Oroweat bread but it's a smallish loaf. Same at Stater Bros.
Ground beef is shown at Ralphs as $2.99 a pound for 70% lean. vons has 80% lean for the same price.
The various kinds of steak start at $2.99 at most of the chains. Vons had a good special last week that combined with their online affinity program to et the price on London Broil down around $2.25 a pound if you bought at least $20 worth before the $5 discount kicks in.
If you just walk in anyplace and toss whatever in the basket you can pay absurd amounts. If you make some effort your food bill is likely higher today than two years ago but you have to be paying attention to se the difference. It's nothing like the late 70s when I first starting getting involved in the family food shopping and saw serious change in a fairly short period.
This is because our supply chain is so damn good at what it does. If Obama has his way and forces radical changes on that, we'll see food price go up in a way that exceeds the carter era. Energy costs are a huge factor and this President promised to make that increase greatly. Before he was elected. Yet the fools still voted for him.

He said then that he wouldn't eat Hebrew National, and nobody who was really serious about keeping kosher would either, as they had been busted too many times for violations; and that, as a result, no kosher certifying organization would even put their seal on their product.
So, while Hebrew National always CLAIMED to be kosher, no independent party would certify them as such.
So the way I see it, nothing has changed.

Also, the low flush toilets are flushed twice most of the time if their not designed well or installed properly. So even the Greens don't get anything for their effort.
That's why I'm so pissed at the House for letting this kind of stupid penny wise pound foolish crap get foisted off on the American people.
It's why Obamacare went through; big pharma and the doctors and health care providers think they're going to make a mint. course the level of healthcare won't go up (might even go down) and the costs to the public won't go down and the cost to employers and to employees wont go down.

One thing I like about refurbing big brand machines: I have a nice collection of BIOS locked OEM OS discs. Just let it boot and it does everything including drivers most of the time. There is a ton of updating needed but that is pretty automated and Ninite makes it easy to get all of the popular freebies in place.
Most of the OEMs don't bother to check anything other than the brand, so you can install Win7 on a machine that shipped with XP or Vista. Dell does set a limit on how old of a BIOS the newer OS version will accept but there are hacks for those who care.
White box machines are more of a tossup. If the OEM sticker is there, no problem. If not, well, it depends how likely anyone is to want a machine of that vintage. It still feels weird to find Core 2 Duo systems being tossed. My mind has yet to accept how the first generation of those are.

Yeah, but I meant my weekly budget hasn't risen that much, not more than the other household categories and not really much at all. If it could be all accounted for by the product-shrinkage thing, it would show up in the weekly budget. I also wasn't counting non-food. I have always kept that separate because I'm kind of crazy detailed with my budgets, and I can't give a good estimate on that because I've discovered coupons for that in the past two years, and that has really changed how much I spend on things like toiletries and detergent.

I'm gonna stuff a SCSI host adapter in and put the page file on a decently fast SCSI drive with a lot of heads/platters, and TMP/TEMP on another pretty quick SCSI drive. That should make things pretty snappy.
The onboard vid seems fairly credible even though its stealing 64k of the main memory. Someday I'll happen across something with a fast 8X AGP card and do a FreeTech video upgrade.

I'm so glad they've finally expanded out Northeast; before they came to town, I think the best fried chicken to be had here was at the supermarket - which doesn't suck, mind you, but still.
Posted by: Lewis at June 19, 2012 09:03 PM (UB1pV)
The golden era for coupons in CA ended with the supermarket strike in 2005. That is when true double coupons went away.
I still get a lot of use from them but nothing like the trips that would make the checker's eye bug out in disbelief back in the day.
But it has to be a really attractive buy if it isn't something I need. I'd guess I let at least 60% of the coupons I tear out expire unused.
I also take advantage of how conservative the supermarkets are about expiration dates. Stuff gets marked down as much as 75% with days to spare and even the date marked is conservative if the product didn't go unrefrigerated for long in transport.
But that is a big indicator to me of the growing number of people having a hard time getting by. A lot of categories where I used to easily find far more product than I could use are now getting scarce. I used to have a good supply of sliced turkey for sandwiches in my freezer but these days I'm lucky to find any decent choices. A lot of people who would once ignore the markdown bin can no longer afford to do so.

The absolute best honey in the world comes from north Georgia, from the Sourwood tree. It is light and fragrant and flows rather than clumps. It's more expensive, but I can't put anything else in my tea now. It is a seasonal honey, so you have to stock up when it's available.

I was highly critical and resistant about versions 1.x, 2.0+, 3.x, and 4.x of low-flow toilets, but when we had replaced one of our "old-style" toilets with an American Standard Cadet, I actually went ahead and replace the other one a few months later. The low-flow actually outperformed the "old-style".
I've got to say their advertising was horrible though -- it said something like "this toilet could pass a tennis ball", and I couldn't go back to that aisle without visualizing what passing a tennis ball would do to me.

I have a data recovery software that creates an image. The image I am trying to save is 100 GB. The save to location is a partition with 149 GB. But the s/w tells me not enough space.
Does that seem logical? Aren't .dmg(s) smaller than the original or is compression extra (i.e. might not be automatically performed by the data recovery s/w)?
Posted by: Adriane at June 20, 2012 01:24 AM (qmMAj)
IIRC, there's a certain amount of overhead required for data space, and it's non-linear. So if you need to expand data by N, and that requires index to expand by I, but the index only grows by increment Q, you could require N+Q to hold your data if you were inconveniently close to the maximum index. In addition, the underlying DOS allocates clusters rather than bytes.
100G to 149G does sound like a lot....but considering that I've got 16G in my camera, it might be "rounding".

It's a way of getting reminded of our age. The prices of quite nice new machines are within the envelope of what I once automatically added when estimating what was needed to make a new machine complete.
When I got a new laptop a while back for a Win8 testbed, it was under $500 for the most powerful system I'd owned to date and all I could find to spend more money on was a backpack for it to live in. I might give it more RAM someday but the 6 GB it came with is plenty adequate. If I ever upgrade it, it'll be because there was a really low price on 8 GB SO-DIMMs of the right sort activating my 'because I can' response encoded in my DNA.
The hard drive is not the one it was supposed to come with. They apparently had a shortage of the 640 GB units and used 750 GB models instead. It isn't like anyone was going to complain. I might switch it out to an equivalent hybrid drive someday if the price is right. I expect my next laptop to have an mSATA slot for a small fast SSD and a regular platter drive. Having the mSATA slot filled or unfilled, and in what capacity, gives the manufacturer more customization options and thus more appealing for them than hybrid drives.
So, I still find myself looking at this machine and being amazed it cost so little. It's understandable why those without the ability to do their own repairs and/or upgrades find it easier to just buy new. Labor costs add up so quickly and soon become a major portion of a new system's cost.

On backup drives and partitions dedicated to swap files, I normally start out with 4k allocation granularity. On a swap file, the virtual memory page size of the CPU is going to be 4k, so anything less than 4k granularity is flat out wasting bookkeeping overhead.

If you were local to me I'd pull the drive from the enclosure and put it in the docking station to let R-Studio have its way with it for a few hours. If you're lucky. It's when the recovery process fails after just a few minutes that is the worst case scenario. That usually means the drive electronics themselves are damaged and the recovery process gets a lot more expensive.

Our fresh meat and produce grocery shopping list hasn't changed very much since 1980. And we spend a LOT more on those same groceries today than we did as newlyweds. Sanderson Farm whole chicken at $1.29/lb makes each bird cost around 7 bucks. Back then, 29 cents a pound. Not now. Back then, we actually did frequent restaurants that we no longer patronize.
No, the entire premise that groceries cost less now than then is a lie. And don't argue that journeyman wages have kept up with the rate of grocery/mortgage/automobile/medical inflated costs. Not so.
That people today mostly buy/eat prepared food purchased from the grocer is a point. I went to look for a can of pinto beans at Safeway where a can of plain beans cost $1.29 now, that used to cost 29 cents in 1980. Jiffy corn muffin mix costs 50 cents now at HEB where it used to cost 20 cents in 1986.
Perhaps the point regards food stamps, no longer limited to the purchase of food stuffs at groceries. The statistics represented by the dog eater apply to how food stamps were spent only on groceries as regulated then vs. on whatever the welfare recipients want now. But the idea that less taxes are spent on providing food stamps now vs. then is again the most vile of lies. It used to be nearly impossible to get food stamps, granted temporarily only under dire circumstances with strict supervision. Today, politicians hand out food stamps like candy for votes.

They say the percentage of our income that is spent on groceries has gone down.
Probably true - because we spend more on going out to eat! The more you eat out, the less you spend at the grocery store.
I think later we'll see that the cost per item on their list was derived inaccurately.
This looks like more "keep Obama in office because things aren't that bad" spin.
