Interactive Books Are Coming

Now this is just an animated GIF but it's interesting how the addition of even a little motion turns it into something more than just a comic panel. For an even better example with sound, motion, and perspective check out this sample of the graphic novel, Soul Reaper.

And given advancements in smart paper, cheap low-power computing and new multimedia features in HTML5 it's not hard to imagine that full-on interactive books with active graphics and sound will be available within the decade.

Add in more computing and ubiquitous networking and eventually everyone will own their own personal "A Young Lady's Illustrated Primer". You can already see hints of what's possible in this ipad app.

Mr. Romney vs Governor Romney

Well I'm with Mark Steyn on this one. It's always struck me as odd that we address politicians by office titles they don't hold - and maybe haven't held in years or decades. While Counts, Dukes, Baronesses etc. at least are referred to by the titles they currently have.

I'm with Kevin and the president in preferring "Mr. Romney" over "Governor Romney." The primary debates were all "Governor", "Senator" and "Mr. Speaker", even though there wasn't a single governor, senator, or speaker on the stage. What's the point of a republic if a guy can serve one term in the House of Representatives in the early Seventies and be addressed as "Congressman" until he keels over half-a-century later? Turning offices into titles of nobility is, to my mind, even more unrepublican than having a bunch of marquesses and viscounts queening it up because "Senator", "Governor" et al. are titles that by definition are in the gift of the people and, when the people are no longer willing to bestow said title or the office-holder declines to submit himself to their adjudication, the use thereof should cease.

McDonald's Food in Ads vs in Real Life

Here's a video showing how McDonald's makes their food look so appealing in photographs. They use all the same ingredients that you'd find in any restaurant but have to make adjustments in order to show off all the ingredients in a single shot. On the other hand since you're guaranteed to never get a hamburger as it's shown in the ads, it is sort of a lie too.

Judging People - Not by the Color of Their Skin But By The Color of Their Shoes

So a recent study found that you can tell a lot about someone just by looking at their shoes:

this experiment shows that you really can judge a person by their shoes ... and you do not need to see anything else to do so.

Psychologists from the University of Kansas found that the style, value, colour and condition of the footwear can paint a picture of the owner's emotional, political and other vital personality traits.

It is such a giveaway that in the tests, observers who were shown a picture of a pair of shoes were able to guess a person's characteristics at better-than-chance levels on 45 percent of the dimensions that were measured.

And sometimes stereotypes do hold up:

Liberal thinkers, who many think of as sandal wearing hippies, did not surprise. They really do wear scruffier and less expensive shoes, said the research.

And for all you dudes out there - the ladies really do check out your shoes so don't go cheap in the footwear.

20 Actually, interactive comics have been around for quite a while. Frankly, I'm not overwhelmed of using the tools of the Internet to make a character's hair wave. I have created a web comic called Dry Eye for the Toon Guy - all about post cancer symptoms. I use the interactivity not add a bit of motion to the back ground; rather to insert "pointless digressions" (ie terrible jokes, er. Yeah, that's pretty much it. Just terrible jokes.) If you'd like to see that web comic, go to: eyetoon.com

21 Driving through Misery once several years ago I stopped at a Wendy's in some small town just off the interstate. This was before large swaths of rural America came to resemble scenes from Breaking Bad. Anyway, the burger I got looked just like the picture on the menu. Almost hated to bite into the thing.

22 So American books and comics are catching up.

In science fiction where an interactive book can teach via captivating story, Neal Stephenson's The Diamond Age.

For an actual hold in your hand example.  From the era of Windows 2000, circa 2002, Japan offered e-manga.  Even had a web-site: http://e-manga.jp.  Limited animation, sound effects, and pop-up word balloons.

25 Another weird point is that the Chinese language has changed its pronunciations. Mainly the Chinese used to merge more of its consonants than it does now.

There is a surname "Tran" in Vietnamese - I was told this preserves an earlier pronunciation of what the Chinese now pronounce "Chan".

Sorry, grampa, the judging is done independent of your consent.  I remember running into Phil Bredesen back when he was the mayor of Nashville, prior to his run as governor, and wondering why his suit was rumpled and his shoes unshined.  If a man cant keep his shoes shined, is he really worthy to run a city?   Of course he was always a rumpled youknowwhatstick from Massachusetts, so I guess I shouldn't have been surprised he was slob as well.

88 The chinese language is an instrument of oppression. It requires years of study, and like the pre-Gutenberg, pre-Tyndale bible it keeps literacy, knowledge, and power in the hands of the elite. It is difficult by design. Written english didn't happen by accident, it out competed other forms of script as the best, easiest way for a free people to communicate. In the centrally controlled East, Written chinese was the best, most effective tool of centralized control.

113 89-that's a good point. With 5000 characters to learn, most chinese simply didn't have the time to study the language fully-especially in an agrarian society. Interestingly, Mao came up with requiring women to work, and putting their children in state run schools, in order to "capture their minds." My daughter studied this in her 5th grade homeschool course. I found that very interesting.

116 The Chinese script is good mainly for what it shows about what the Chinese value.

We had that in the West, too - at least, the Egyptians had it: hieroglyphic and hieratic. The point was to create an ideography such that people in 1500 BC could write a text that their successors in 100 BC would be able to read.

If I want to read Beowulf, I have to buy a translation. A translation. Why should I have to trust someone's translation, or else learn a new language, just to read my own ancestors' work?

Screw that, said the Egyptians; and screw that, said the Chinese. We're not going to use that weird Near Eastern invention, the "alphabet". We're going to stick with pictographs, try to make them as easy to write as we can, and make sure the structure of our language doesn't change.

So the Chinese can still read Ssuma Chien; and we the English need help with Chaucer, and need a dictionary or Google even with Shakespeare.

Of course those only count if you make them from a deer you killed yourself, using all the parts while saying a prayer to the animal spirits for rain and a good harvest.  Fauxcahontas always uses all of the parts of the animals she buys at the Whole Foods - even the icky ones! - when her maid prepares dinner.  Her indigenous and locally-sourced rescue dogs are well-fed, in the tradition of her valiant ancestors.  She's gone so far as to use broken eggshells to clean out her in-sinkerator.

137 89 The chinese language is an instrument of oppression. Posted by: endeavor to persevere at June 21, 2012 10:29 PM (zZJJp) Spot on regarding Chinese as an instrument of centralized control, which is what prevented the Chinese from having a much larger impact on history outside the middle kingdom. English won out more because as an unregulated language, it simply swallowed anything it did not supplant, whereas other European languages have academies to control their development. The ability to adapt is a survival mechanism for languages and cultures as well as individuals ans species. The British Empire helped a bit as well.

Now this is what I'm talking about. See that burger in the video? It's plump, it's juicy, it's three inches thick. Now look at this sorry, squashed, miserable thing. Can anybody tell me what's wrong with this picture? Anybody?

189 The difficulty in writing in Chinese might indeed be "the instrument of centralized control", but that is also true in a less elitist way. Remember the discussion of all the different languages in China? The ideographic nature of the writing vaults over all that. So everyone literate in the system could read everyone else's writings -- and of course the governments edicts -- regardless of the language they spoke. There are times (being presented with 5 sheetsworth of translations about healthcare benefits [when my Mother was still alive] or electronic equipment instructions) that make you long for that...

Smith and Wesson 3913 9mm automatic.  You CAN leave one in the chamber with the mag out, slide safety OFF and the gun won't fire since it has a mag safety.  Insert a mag, and there's no need to rack the slide to have it be ready to shoot.

225 204.. at the risk of driving away ONT anti-gun folks, better to have the revolver completed loaded and her to become familiar with it to trust it in a loaded capacity.  handguns for home defense are not preferred,.. they are loud and you have to hit what you aim at which means practice.  Shotgun preferred.. 20 ga if she doesn't like a 12 ga kick..  but any gun is better than no gun.  If she sleeps better having a .38 snubby in the bed table drawer, then it's ok.  Need to focus on caliber she can shoot, and gun that fits her hand and that she has confidence in.  90% of it is mental....  really, it is.

234 The thing is you CAN leave a round chambered in the 3913 and it WILL NOT FIRE if the magazine is removed or even just released and backed out a bit.

The magazing safety feature is why a lot of cops prefer certain S/W automatics.  Get into a struggle with a perp who's trying o take you gun, and all you need to do is hit the mag release button to render it harmless.

Leaving the cylinder open serves no purpose except dropping all your ammunition on the floor when you pick up the weapon in a hurry. 2) It'c called a cylinder. The chamber is one of the holes in the cylinder. They're not removable. The limitations in California are: 1) No .410 or any shotgun-caliber handguns. This is because of a quirk in the way "short barreled shotgun" is defined in the law, so no "Taurus Judges." Not that I miss them. 2) The "Roster" of approved "safe" handguns - basically California requires a manufacturer to bribe the state before they can sell here, so for new handguns you're limited to approved models or a more expensive "single-shot exemption" conversion (that you convert back simply and legally). You can look up the roster online. She needs to handle and shoot guns before choosing.

241 disagree on .357.  I read a really good article about shooting one of those in a house, especially at night.  Target reaquire is tough with a hard kick and a .357 , though it hits hard, shoots flame out.. and that's like having a flash bulb go off after the first shot.. IF you hit what you were aiming at.  So you'll be blinded and deaf after first shot.  ANY pistol shot in a house will deafen you though...   anything they get, they need to have no fear of and trust their ability to use it.  Also practice safe handling and go to the range to shoot once in awhile to stay comfortable.

Can be, yes, but everything I've read suggests that the Marlin is better set up for it right out of the box. Just needs sights, doesn't need trigger work, sling swivels, etc. I think Marlin made the 795 specifically with Appleseed in mind. Besides, my Marlin 60 is a tack driver and I'd like to stick with the brand.

The model 60 would be OK for Appleseed if I had the speed loader for it, but I've really got my eye on the 795. I have not been to an Appleseed but I really would like to go. I'd bring my EBR for the second part of it.

From what I understand bolt actions are OK, just a little slow is all. The website says they pretty much welcome any gun any caliber.

Posted by: The Political Hat at June 21, 2012 11:07 PM then there is the PsyOps thing to think about...slapping the cylinder home makes a indistinct clicking noise, whereas chambering a round in a semi-auto makes a very distinct noise The goblin hears a click, so what? The goblin hears a slide racked, it's pucker time. Mom has the advantage, 'cause the goblin has already had an "Oh Shit" moment hearing the racking. For a really satisfying "Oh Shit" racking noise moment, I recommend the Remington 870 in 12ga; but that's just me. Others prefer the Mossberg Home Defender (if we had sub-text, I'd add snarky "See what I did, there?" But we don't have sub-text, so I won't mention it)

It's not a joke, and people who don't know anything about guns eat that shit up and end up dead in a hallway pockmarked with useless pellets. Also, shotguns are generally way the fuck louder than handguns. Just think before you write, it saves you embarrassment.

I miss Deadwood.

How can you not love a Chinese character who only knew one word of English, cocksucker? And could carry on a whole conversation with it?

And fuck? That brings me to "House of the Dead: Operation Overkill." Holy shit, that game is awesome. Holds a record, I've heard, for the most F-bombs in a video game. And: With top-notch dialog like, "Move aside, diaper shit!" how can it not be 5 stars?

266 People talk a lot of shit about big caliber's, stopping power, blah blah blah, but if she is not comfortable with it, it aint worth a fuck.

I like an ancient Walther .32 PP for carry.  Small, doesn't kick at all, and I can draw and drop 3 in a pie plate size target at 20' in under 2.5sec.  A trio of .32 Silvertips in the chest will get anyone's attention.  If something is worth shooting, its worth shooting several times.

Posted by: Purp (@PurpAv) at June 21, 2012 07:23 PM (HSVIu)

267 Shotguns are preferred for home defense because of the purporse they serve - delivering a massive load on target, assuming you hit said target.  A shotgun delivers a massive load of energy into the target, to the point that it's the only "1 shot stopper" that exists for close quarters - while handgun rounds, especially the .357 magnum have many documented 1 shot stops, shot placement is still the key with them.  That said, a shotgun is only as good as the nut behind the trigger.  The notion that they spread so much that they'll hit anybody in the room will eventually, if it hasn't already, get somebody killed.  You still have to aim and hit your target.

I just wondered if anyone had any guns to recommend trying out, with the explanation of her initial thinking. I recommended to her that she should try many ones out to see which one she was most comfortable with/ good at. I also told her the open cylinder approach wasn't a good. one. I once shot a rat with a 12 gauge in a semi-dark basement. Huge fireball and I couldn't hear for a half hour, it took a couple of days for the ringing to stop. The .357 revolver loaded with .38 rounds (which is what was originally specified) will not be as loud, nor will it throw as big a fireball, as a 12 ga with 00 buckshot. I can tell you that from personal experience, not as a "well I heard" or "I read in a magazine" kind of thing. (I have also shot my previously mentioned .357 Taurus with .38 rounds in an indoor range without hearing protection cause I forgot to put them back on, no fireball and while the shock did ring my eardrums a bit it wasn't nearly as loud as the shotty. I put my earpro back on in a big damn hurry though.)

333 AR pattern .22 at the local Wally World, maybe I'll pick it up instead of a Ruger 10/22 or Marlin 795. That would be fun! lashing out at reporters, leaving the Ong Bak film crew and everyone as he went and spent 3 or 4 months in the jungle by himself (he was producing and directing), shitting all over the dude who made him who he is and just general douchebaggery.

And yes Mr President, everything, as you always say, is my fault. I made you socialize medicine, because obviously I failed to do so in my term. I won the Iraq war, but I didn't win it quickly enough so that you couldn't lose the peace. I failed, miserably, to get Nancy Pelosi, Barney Frank, and Joe Biden to stop protecting Fannie Mae from any oversight, and because of that we entered a deep recession.

And speaking of Sheriff Joe, it is my fault that he asks the handicapped to stand, doesn't know how many letters are in the word jobs, and tells racist jokes.

It is also my fault that you plundered the treasury to pay off your political allies, ran guns to Mexican drug cartels, and outted a real honest to goodness intelligence asset...and all because my name is Bush...obviously. By the way Joe - same number of letters as jobs.

D-Wade has turned into a bigger bitch then Lebron. Lebron has actually shut up and played well in crunch time. Lebron is great, I had no problem with him leaving Cleveland, especially after the way Dan Gilbert bitched about it, Lebron just gets a lot of bad advice from people in his inner circle.

Last night I counted myself out of the graphic novel bullshit, and if tonight's entry on the ONT is illustrative of the art then count me out again. Good God what bullshit. On the other hand, what is illustrated by the comic book inadequacy to hit home runs is a symptom of all modern literature. Modern literature aims for the niches, because it is far easier to stroke egos in the spinward marches than it is to present shining goodness from the core.

436 @422 Hmm, I had seen the thing about the on-line education stuff earlier today. The board chair released a list of 10 areas where the president had failed (or where UVA was having issues). The online thing was one of them. A lot of students *want* online education and this *is* a state school. I don't think it's a magic bullet, and probably would never work for some disciplines/courses, but it really reads like this president failed to respond to her board. It's hysterical that faculty think they can choose their boss. Who else gets to do that?

Yeah, that's worked out so well for Rumer Willis. What matter isn't just that Kim Basinger's her mom but the genetics favored that, too. Imagine if, like the aforementioned Rumer Willis, she took after Dad. (considering the chin you'd think she was Jay Leno's kid.) Or consider the unfortunate daughter of Meat Loaf. (The hot other one is his step-daughter and not related by blood.)

Without the goods the novelty value of the famous parents fades fast.

That was the whole selling point for many on the left...skin color is a substitute credential, and it's much easier for them to dismiss anybody in disagreement as a racist.   No thinking involved.  Their obsession with race and their overwhelming media presence makes groupthink much easier.  But those days are numbered, judging from what's been happening in the last month or so.

Posted by: model_1066 at June 21, 2012 10:29 PM (PWwbk)

559 Of course, the lefty fallback is usually to arrogantly impugn your motives for what you say, as its easier than actually making a reasoned argument.

Posted by: model_1066 at June 21, 2012 10:31 PM (PWwbk)

560 What's the worst thing you have ever heard a lefty say about any other lefty? Seems like if they casually excuse monsters like Mao and Pol Pot, you can really bet that there are no enemies to the left.  Geez, it's pretty obvious that the only inexcusable crime a minority can commit is not voting Democrat...or being successful without their 'help'.

Posted by: model_1066 at June 21, 2012 10:37 PM (PWwbk)

561 It depends on what the other lefty represents: follower, leader, or competitor. The third category get as much or more vicious treatment than any mere opposition member. It's like the alpha girls in high school. Look at any group of founding leftists of a totalitarian state like the USSR or China. One of the followers inevitably looks upon another and thinks, "Bitch has to go."

Posted by: Merovign, Dark Lord of the Sith at June 21, 2012 11:56 PM (bxiXv)

565 The left will criticize the left for being insufficiently left. Mind you, we have our talk of RINOs too, though it's generally based on a specific issue the person in question is passionate about. I pretty much never hear the words "ideology" or "party loyalty" mentioned on the right, at least in my limited circles. I guess the latter a little with someone like McLame who spends most of their time on the other side - but I'm not mad because it's "disloyal," I'm mad because of the consequences. Some days the line is blurry, but it is there. Basically we don't have a core of ideological purists who are almost universally looked to for answers and excused of bizarre behavior. We self-criticize more. One of the reasons for that is that, by and large, the "right" isn't "born to the fold," we arrive here either during youthful discovery or later self-examination. Especially since most of us went to Lefty Indoctrination Centers during our youth - frankly if they had been more vague, less radical, and lied less I might never have found my way out.

Posted by: Merovign, Dark Lord of the Sith at June 22, 2012 12:01 AM (bxiXv)

566 Mero, the left is devoid of ideas and has basically become an intellectual space devoted to maintaining discredited, planned economics; failed progressive policies, and the "spirit" of the sexual revolution.

Posted by: Jean at June 22, 2012 12:40 AM (C/Pop)

567 Someone was complaining earlier that the word "fascism" has been so abused as to have no actual meaning. I just saw a wiki article (yes, I know, all unreliable - it was about the history of a particular french book) where the word "fascism" was used as if it were exchangeable with "eugenics." Like I've said before, like "racism," "facism" is a leftist code word for "stuff we don't like in my pod." Once upon a time, words had actual meanings. Hi Jean. Bye Jean.

In which he states, this gun-walking program is using the same "tactics" as one during the Bush administration.

In other words, they'd have us believe, "Operation Fast and Furious" is nothing more than an extension of  "Operation Wide Receiver."

When the fact of the matter is, Wide Receiver ended in 2007, has very little in common with Fast and Furious, and no one died.

That fact needs to be pointed out, over, and over, and over again, until it becomes inescapable.
