End of the weekend for some, just another day for others, but all are welcome at the ONT party.
And good news - if you emailed me about being banned, pixy says you can now comment again. So you have that going for you.
The 20 Hottest Conservative Women In The New Media - 2012 Edition
As judged by a semi-qualified bunch of mostly well-known conservative blogger-types according to utterly subjective criteria that mean nothing.
But you're still gonna click through and pore over them anyway despite what the restraining orders say.
And here are the results from previous years for reference purposes...
The 20 Hottest Conservative Women In The New Media (2011 Edition)

Reagan Couldn't Be Nominated by the GOP Today?
Well that's what Jeb Bush said - well except once you dig through all the ellipses and Dowd-ified quotes he didn't. Here's what he actually said:
"Ronald Reagan would have, based on his record of finding accommodation, finding some degree of common ground, as would my dad - they would have a hard time if you define the Republican party - and I don't - as having an orthodoxy that doesn't allow for disagreement, doesn't allow for finding some common ground," Bush said, adding that he views the hyper-partisan moment as "temporary."
"Back to my dad's time and Ronald Reagan's time - they got a lot of stuff done with a lot of bipartisan suport," he said. Reagan "would be criticized for doing the things that he did."
Which is a fair statement IMO. Back before he became a statesman, Reagan was a conservative politician and not a perfectly orthodox one either. He may be nigh universally loved today but when he was president he still got a good amount of heat from the right.
Here's an article in the LA Times from 1987 in which many conservatives were angry with Reagan for being insufficiently anti-communist and their chilly reaction to him:
Thus, when the President arrived, the conservatives were already seething. Reagan, stunned by his icy greeting, used index cards in making a statement of less than five minutes.
"When he stopped there was dead silence, and he stood there awkwardly; as an old radio man, he would have called it dead air," said a conservative who attended the meeting. "He must have stood there for 15 seconds and then said: 'I guess I interrupted some work.' Then he turned and walked away and, as he went out the door, he put his hands out with his palms up as if to say: 'What's going on here?' "
And given how the Overton window in the GOP has shifted to the right on many issues since then I suspect the 1980 version of Reagan would not have smooth sailing to a nomination today - in large part due to lessons learned during the 80s:
Too little attention is paid to the basic fact that Reagan was a man of his times and the times have changed. For instance, much of the GOP's "extreme" opposition to tax increases stems from lessons learned from Reagan's experience. Democrats promised to cut spending if Reagan raised taxes. They didn't cut spending. Reality-based Republicans don't want to repeat that mistake. Likewise, Reagan agreed to amnesty for illegal immigrants in 1986. Rather than be a one-time deal, it proved to be an incentive for more illegal immigration. And so on. The upshot of so much of the "Reagan was too reasonable for today's GOP" blather assumes that Reagan wouldn't have learned from what turned out to be mistakes - and that today's Republicans shouldn't either.
But I am sure that a savvier 2012 101 year-old version of Reagan would win in a walk.
Stacy McCain's Rules for Comments
Well we're not quite as strict around here (except for #3) but then we also randomly ban people just to keep everyone on their toes.
I just want to spotlight a few things that I am finding particularly banworthy in recent days, for the benefit of those Loyal Readers who want to make my job easier by pointing out idiots who drop by for the express purpose of fouling the premises.
- The old whine that Romney is no better than Obama. I am sick and tired of reading this BS.
- Stupid posts by people who don't get why Stacy is posting like a madman about Brett Kimberlin and Neal Rauhauser. If you're too dumb to figure out their significance after all that's been written, GTFO.
- On a related topic, anyone encouraging vigilanteism or messing around with BK/NR a la Anonymous or 4chan is going to get banned. Period.

10 of the World's Most Expensive Beers
Well for varying strengths of 'beer':
Price: $765/330ml
ABV: 55%
With the beer to end all beers, the gang at Brewdog mistakenly thought End of History would end the ABV arms race. At 110 proof and a staggering $765, it is the third strongest and second most expensive beer on the planet. This blond Belgian ale was mixed with nettles and juniper berries from the Scottish highlands and then freeze distilled multiple times. Only 12 bottles exist, and each is made out of taxidermied roadkill: seven weasels (stoats), four squirrels, and one hare.

No Visitors Please: Five Countries That You Won't Be Seeing Anytime Soon
Okay I could pretty much guess North Korea and Iran, but who knew Angola was so selective in who gets to see beautiful Luanda:
Angola, one of Africa's largest oil producers, as well as one of the world's poorest countries, is coping with the effects of a 27-year long war for independence that devastated its population and landscape. Tourism isn't easy either. Visas, which can take up to three months to arrive. To attain your visa and permission for entry, you must have proof of vaccination for yellow fever, two letters of invitation to Angola from within the country and a bank statement confirming that you have "proof of sufficient funds," at least $100 per day.

For the first time in modern American history, the incumbent (that's us) will get outspent in a re-election campaign -- by some estimates as much as 3-to-1.
Over the last 10 days of this month alone, GOP outside groups will spend $20 million attacking President Obama on TV.
Think about that, then think about what they'll spend over the last 10 days in October.
We have to take this seriously. Four months to go in this election, and we have a huge fundraising deadline coming up in less than a week -- any day we're not chipping away at that disadvantage, we're falling behind.
Please donate $3 or more today.
We don't have billionaires writing $10 million checks, and right now, we can't change the laws that allow the hijacking of our democracy by private money.
What we do have is more than 2 million donors grassroots giving an average donation of $51. Every day between now and November we can combat the huge spending advantage that our opponent and his allies have over regular people.
You can do that here:

The most important political issue in 1980 was how to deal with the Soviets.
Conservatives wanted to more actively confront them, liberals wanted to full on appease them.
Most Republican candidates fell somewhere between the two ideologies. Reagan was about the farthest right major candidate on the issue.
And he wasn't that far off on most other issues.
In the end he would compromise with the left on domestic spending to get enough moderate Democrats - they did used to exist - to go along with his tax cuts and military build up.
He did want to cut spending, but it was agenda item 3.
Well, Reagan won the cold war for us. Taxes are an issue, but not issue #1.
So one could expect a Reagan clone would be going after the bureaucratic behemoth, just like he went after the Soviet one and the political class would be calling him an extremely extreme extremist that is going to kill us all, just like they did in 1980.
This goes to show also, there is no need to nominate liberals like Romney. Republicans can win nationally running on actual conservative ideas. Hell, Bush 43 did it in 2004. He just didn't bother governing on the ideas he ran on.

One way you can tell is there are clearly multiple classes of cars competing in the GT (left-hand side) race which is normal for races like that.
F1 is crazy fast. Which is why they retire so much younger than, say, Nascar.
Some of the top Nascar drivers could probably have competed in their youth given a shot -- guys like Jeff Gordon and Tony Stewart. Kyle Busch probably. Montoya obviously did before he came to Nascar.
F1 the reflexes typically force retirement by the early 30s. Top Nascar guys can be competitive till their early 40s.
Of course, the top motocross and supercross guys typically have to retire by their mid-20s. Not sure about MotoGP, but those guys always seem under 30.
When it comes to racing, I'm a big fan of the Lucas Oil off road racing series -- basically big trucks and dune buggies racing on giant motocross style courses. Not sure why that isn't more popular. Lots of carnage and dirt and metal flying, crazy jumps, Makes for good TV.
Posted by: Flatbush Joe at June 24, 2012 11:29 PM (ZPrif)
The speed of F1, Indy, and NASCAR cars is unbelievable when you see them in person. 200 mph is very impressive.
NASCAR's age where they start dropping off seems to be getting younger and younger. Years ago drivers spent their 20's in garbage rides trying to impress the big owners, and then in their 30's they would get the good rides because they had learned to not tear up the equipment. Junior Johnson wasn't going to hire somebody that tore up cars because Junior was very thrifty. Now, the big owners don't really care since the top rides are getting about 20 million a year in sponsorship.
I think Gordon, Busch, and Stewart all had the talent to be in F1, but I don't think there is enough butter to put on Smoke's hips to get him to fit into a F1 cockpit.

Coulter also single handedly stopped the pitty party around the Jersey girls who lost loved ones at 9/11 and then used their dead bodies to push a liberal agenda. Those same Jersey Girls got over $2 Million each from the feds for their loss. I served with guys in Vietnam whos wives got $10,000 bucks. Even now death benefits for soldiers is $250,000.
Once Coutler spoke out they dissappeared.

A study finds that those who drink in moderation - no more than 14 drinks a week and no more than three a day for women and four a day for men - have better overall scores than those who abstain completely.
The quality of life was measured using the Health Utilities index, which looks at factors including dexterity, emotion, cognition and mobility.

Coulter doesn't pretend to be conservative to serve as a useful idiot for democrats on MSNBC, she had a job there. She got fired for lighting up democrats. Joe Scarborough took her place and the first thing he did was start bashing Bush over Katrina. He's been there every since.

post rejection is the best part of getting rejected by a girl as you have a few options:
1) drink - boring as you do it every night
2) spazz out - fun and your friends will laugh but you can only do it so many times
3) creeper - follower her home, break in when she is at work and steal a pair of her panties and hair from her hair brush. Every week send her a message written in crayon (cut out letters are over played) about what you would like to do to her.
4) rapist - umm......yeah

A 13-year-old boy was one of two people killed, and 13 other people were wounded, in shootings in the city overnight that stretched from Montrose Avenue south to 97th Street, authorities said.
Then we have this part:
In the shootings overnight,Tyquan Tyler, 13, was at a party with his sister, 19, in the 6200 block of South Rhodes Avenue when a fight broke out about 1:20 a.m., police said. The two ran from the fight but someone pulled a gun and fire, hitting the boy, police said.
So a 13yo was at a party at 1:20 am.......mmkay.
Let it be noted that IL in general, and Chicago in particular, has some of the strictest gun laws in the country. It's almost like 'if guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns'.
Go figure.

I got in an email exchange with that asshole when he was on the air bashing bush for not calling out the LA National Guard. I explained to him politely that the President can't call out the National Guard that it is the Governors duty and perogative to do that.
We went back and forth for awhile and he finally said on the air that he was arguing with Rob in Seattle like some guy from Seattle would know anything about hurricanes.
Well I do actually, I have sailed through a tropical storm, lived through a hurricane in St. Thomas and was in the worst fucking monsoon in Vietnams history. But that wasn't the point. The point was the President can't call out the Governors National Guard unless the entire state chain of command has gone missing.

Robtr, people sometimes don't like facts to get in the way of a good narrative. Your post did remind me of the time Christopher Hitchens was on a discussion panel in front of a large audience. He brought up the same point you did about Governors having to authorize the use of the National Guard. They of course howled at him. He responded to them by repeatedly saying "That's the Constitution!" "That's the Constitution!"

In turning down their quick offers for sex, I feel like I'm dodging bullets. After all, if I hook up with her and we end up in a serious relationship, she'll stop taking The Pill and as a result end up finding other men more attractive. I accept that this is odd. I know it is, but... I don't date men that I don't know. I have to form an attraction to someone through friendship or familiarity before an attraction develops.
A really great guy, a baseball player, had a major crush on me when I was in my late 20s and asked me out on date. I told him I couldn't go out with him because I didn't know him well enough. His answer, of course, is that I could get to know him if I went out with him. Still no.

Unless you are dating strippers, I'd give you 90-10 odds that it was because your actions made them feel insulted/unattractive, rather than having anything at all to do with "good time." It is very difficult for a man to turn down a woman without insult/unattractive being the only message they hear, no matter what you say.

Don't be so quick to declare freedom here. Yes, if they say the commerce clause allows everything, we are slaves. But there is no converse conclusion associated with the opposite. Anytime anyone gets to own your time without paying for it, you are a slave at least to the degree of the amount of time confiscated against your will.
BTW, anyone who suggests that a clause (eg. commerce clause) in any contract should supersede an amendment to that same contract (eg. bill of rights) is trying to blow one by you. Those who write a contract have an imperfect view of future amendments, but those who write amendments always have a opportunity for 20-20 hindsight about the language of the contract.
Yes, I know that the constitution and the bill of rights were not separated by a long period of time. However, it has to be clear to everyone that really thinks about it that the amendments were not included in the body of the contract precisely for the reason that any reasonable person would plainly see that the amendments shall always supersede the original body of the contract.

The authors of The Federalist were opposed to the adoption of The Bill of Rights because they thought that saying government could do only 38 things (or whatever the number in Article 1, Section 8 includes) should be enough -- if you continued with "and especially not A, B, C, D, E, and F", the focus would turn away from what was allowed, but to what was forbidden. Subsequent events have proved them right.
Of course, the faction that supported a Bill of Rights that would have bright-line determinations of limits not to be crossed said that without such limits, the government would run amok. They, also, were proved right by subsequent events.
We'll not be freed if the Constitution is upheld and Obamacare fails.....but we'll be instantly enslaved if Obamacare stands and the Constitution fails. But so long as our primary governing document holds firm, freedom shall be within our reach.

I think there is a day coming when people like me will have to decide if we have been patient or meek. Patience has its limits. I hope I am up to what will be required.

Sadly, I'm ensnared in a total clusterfark of deferred maintenance, and I don't have tools or time to "hang out" in the places I should. It's nothing about the people there or the atmosphere, it's just tripping over things and breaking other things trying to get to things that can be fixed to get things done.

Worth a read. The first few comments are also hilarious.

I'm hoping we don't come to that. Obamacare getting skewered like that grudge match on the chess thread would be a good start. Overturning Wickard would get us halfway there in a single bump (though I'm not expecting that terribly soon [I'd be delighted to be wrong!]). I'm hoping that we never come to the cusp of "patient or meek......or not", 'cause the last time we were there (1861) was so much fun.
But I'm Jacksonian enough to have a problem with enslavement.

sometimes I think the only conversation we should ever have with a leftist is to repeat the same exact statement over and over again --- "I will never be your slave."
Maybe the sheer power of endless repetition would begin to form a dent.

But it was "essential" because of a crisis caused by.......EMTALA, which *should also be unconstitutional* because it coerces emergency care providers to behave in uneconomic ways.
Which could only be imaginable if Wickard hadn't held that Congress' power over "interstate commerce" extended to transactions where both the buyer and seller were in the same state.
The entire state of affairs was worsened by the Feds because they refused to allow insurance companies to offer plans in other states. Ironically, this is the single, solitary act that is actually Constitutional in the whole shebang -- it's just incredibly, atomic-bomb-level, stupid.

which occurs every single time people who do not truly understand a problem attempt to solve it.
We as voters have been abominably stupid. We continually vote for people who absolutely no demonstrated problem solving skills and then demand that they solve every last one of of our problems. Blind luck is a limited commodity and we have used up more than our share.

It'd be really fun (though impossible) to generalize that.
There's an interesting little quirk in the Constitution, in Article 1 section 8: "but no Appropriation of Money to that Use shall be for a longer Term than two Years". It has been widely found that no Congress can shackle a subsequent Congress to a course of action, but there's a hint of a loophole here.
At first blush, it can be read in one of two ways -- either this provision is limited to two years because every other provision can be only one; or that this provision is limited to two years because every other provision might as well be perpetual. I believe that historical evidence supports the former interpretation -- and, thus, every "perpetual" program (i.e. "entitlements") runs counter to the enumerated powers granted to the US government.
Every year, Congress should pass a budget that supports or recants the promises of the Congress before.

And you'll note that these issues were thrashed out in the public square with the Federalist and the Anti-Federalist papers. They weren't decided in secret and spun to sway an ill-informed electorate. A public argument has two responses -- further public argument, or the ravings of a demogogue. Our Constitution consistently favors free speech.

I fear that we have lost the basic understanding of so much that we need to turn to much more fundamental issues than the sophisticated details you are discussing.
For example, we need people to once again understand that money is only a representation of our time. Maybe we could build on that and get back to the degree of sophistication required to understand higher order details.

And you will note that those events come from a time when people did not expect government to solve all their problems. We need to realign our expectations to match our capabilities. We imagine ourselves to be so much more than we really are, and expect some sort of magic called "government" to make it be so.

Verily. If you're in debt, your labors today are not just pledged to today's enjoyments but also to those of yesterday. What does it mean when you work more for yesterday's enjoyment than today's?

If the world understand what I am trying to say, it would be widely recognized that the healthcare problem originates within the first 5 assumptions of the law of s/d -- particularly at the violations of those assumptions --
For example, when health is the question, very few things are substitutable. Diminishing marginal valuation is not a valid concept when one needs an organ transplant -- there is never a need for the 2-for-1 special. Scarcity is artificially enforced by the AMA, the FDA, etc. Multiple wants goes out the window when we are seriously ill.
Taken all together, any time health care is the issue the natural limitations on unethical behavior are very limited. This begs for a government solution -- but we will never have one if the people who are trying to invent one don't bother to understand the problem before they state, and then enforce, a dumbass, only-going-to-work-by-blind-luck, solution. No one yet has ever successfully solved a problem that they did not understand.

Here's an idea. How about doing it twice a day for two days so those of use on the West coast don't have to get up absurdly early to participate. Financial industry types think EST is the center of the friggin' universe.
