500 Full-Length Movies You Can Stream Completely Free
Thanks to the internets a huge amount of mankind's cultural corpus - including many films - is now available to you in your own home for free. No pants or effort on your part required.
Here's a list of 500 of them to keep you occupied. We truly are entering an age of information abundance with your time and attention span the new limitations.
We're not talking about pay-for streaming which allows unlimited viewing here. Rather, a list of old films scattered across sites like YouTube, the Internet Archive, Crackle, and Veoh. That are completely, entirely, 100 percent free to watch. The movies-listed by OpenCulture-are split up by genre and the list includes a short explainer for each flick. Which is fortunate because, while there are plenty of classics in there including films by Hitchcock and an armful of John Wayne westerns, some are rather more obscure.
Note that these films are all either in the public domain or the rights to them are so murky that no one can claim them.
Here are just a few that are worth watching:
- A Fistful of Dollars
- Stagecoach
- Spellbound
- The Man Who Knew Too Much
- The Driller Killer
- The Man With The Golden Arm
- All Quiet on the Western Front
- His Girl Friday
- Monty Python's And Now For Something Completely Different
- D.O.A.
- Yellow Submarine
Aaron Worthing: Good News and Bad News
The good news is that he got his First Amendment rights back today. The bad news is that both he and his wife have lost their jobs due to BK's harassment and he was SWATed tonight. So they really need your help.
My wife and I have lost our jobs due to the harassment of convicted terrorist Brett Kimberlin, including an attempt to get us killed and to frame me for a crime carrying a sentence of up to ten years. I know that claim sound fantastic, but if you read starting here, you will see absolute proof of these claims using documentary and video evidence. If you would like to donate and help my wife and I in this time of need, please go to this donation page or use the PayPal buttons on the right. And thank you.
Oh Goody: Obama Wants US Businesses Subject to International Law
American law to now mostly apply within the US. Mostly.
"Under the agreement currently being advocated by the Obama administration, American corporations would continue to be subject to domestic laws and regulations on the environment, banking and other issues. But foreign corporations operating within the U.S. would be permitted to appeal key American legal or regulatory rulings to an international tribunal. That international tribunal would be granted the power to overrule American law and impose trade sanctions on the United States for failing to abide by its rulings."
Eh Constitution-Schmonstitution.
Man Those Romans Sure Got Around
Or at least their products did. Archaeologists recently found Roman-manufactured beads in a 5th century Japanese burial site:
In a sign the empire's influence may have reached the edge of Asia, three glass beads discovered in the 5th Century 'Utsukushi' burial mound in Nagaoka, near Kyoto, were probably made some time between the first and the 4th century. The government-backed Nara National Research Institute for Cultural Properties has recently finished analysing components of the glass beads, measuring five millimetres (0.2 inches) in diameter, with tiny fragments of gilt attached.
A 5mm diameter piece of glass jewellery believed to have been made by Roman craftsmen, was found in an ancient tomb at Nagaokakyo near Kyoto, in western JapanIt found that the light yellow beads were made with natron, a chemical used to melt glass by craftsmen in the empire, which succeeded the Roman Republic in 27 BC and was ultimately ended by the Fall of Constantinople in 1453.
The beads, which have a hole through the middle, were made with a multilayering technique - a relatively sophisticated method in which craftsmen piled up layers of glass, often sandwiching gold leaf in between.
In fact you can go here and see the Roman Empire get the Google Maps treatment (thanks to Ben).
Insane Lawyers: FunnyJunk vs The Oatmeal
So Matthew Inman is a cartoonist who runs the website, The Oatmeal, and some of his work has even appeared on the ONT before. He discovered a while ago that another site - FunnyJunk - had basically stolen all the material off his site and was hosting it without any credit to him. Rather than suing he asked them to remove his content (which they eventually did) and mocked them for shamelessly stealing.
Now in a normal world everything would have ended there - but that ain't where we live these days.
So the owner of FunnyJunk hired rabid attorney, Charles Carreon, who then threatened to sue Inman in federal court for criticizing FunnyJunk and demanded that he pay them $20,000. Inman posted the letter and laughed at them. And then to make a point he crowd-sourced the $20K plus an extra $180K and then donated it to the National Wildlife Federation and the American Cancer Society.
So what did FunnyJunk/Carreon do in response? Well they sued Matt Inman and also sued the NWF and the ACS.
Why? Who knows other than just general douchebaggery.
Belief in Hell Associated With Lower Crime Rates
But surprisingly belief in heaven not so much. I guess virgins and free ice cream are nice-to-haves, but no one wants to burn for eternity.
Proof That 'Demolition Man' Was a Truly Visionary Film
Almost twenty years later it's still doing an amazing job of predicting our future. Which is okay because I like Taco bell. On the other hand I also enjoy cursing, fluid transfers, and the occasional murder-death-kill...
After all, Demolition Man has proven to be spot on when it comes to predicting some pretty big things. It started with little things, though. Like the advent of voices in cars that announce upcoming streets, technology that exists today as our run-of-the-mill GPS devices.
The movie also pretty much nailed the invention of video conferencing on handheld devices. Remember this scene, featuring Sandra Bullock communicating by way of what looks like an electronic picture frame?
But then the predictions started to get eerie. You might remember Scott Peterson as the maniac who killed his wife in Modesto, California, in 2005 and is currently sitting in prison. In a scene in Demolition Man, police pull up a list of cryo-prisoners who have parole hearings that day. Simon Phoenix (Snipes) is on the list, and so is a familiar name ...
The Yahoo AoSHQ group. Bla bla bla.
And don't forget about the Job Bank.

There was a vicious law firm in CA called Trevor Law Group which filed harassment lawsuits against small businesses all over California
Although I can't stand them, John & Ken Show exposed these snakes and drove them out of business, and California law was amended to prevent others like them from preying on small businesses

MosFilms made some pretty good films and some of them seem to be public domain now. Films depicting pre revolutionary 1917 czarist Russia hold a certain appeal, Dersu Uzala is probably the best example of this era/genre.

I remember seeing these graphic films meant to scare kids about various subjects, one was about bus safety where a little girl gets crushed because she slipped on some ice and fell under the bus. Another was about drugs that showed some guy in a bathroom literally tearing his veins out of his arm to shoot up, and this was in 3rd or 4gth grade, just bizarre, but it worked, scared the shit outta me.

Trade on that route finally dried up when a sea route was found around Africa. It was what started the decline of the Muslim nations at that time, as their cash cows dried up. It was so lucrative that some folks looked for an alternate sea route, including some dude from Portugal with a crackpot idea about how big the world really was. He was wrong of course, but...well, ask the Aztecs, Incas, and a host of others where that led...

People have this idea that Columbus thought the world was flat and he'd eventually go off the edge. This is crap. In 1492, not only was it well known that the world was a globe, but Eratothenes figured out the circumference to a remarkable degree of accuracy in the 3rd century BC, 1800 years earlier.
Western Europeans in the 15th century knew that it should be about 13,000 miles to the Orient going west because they knew (1) the overall circumference of the planet; and (2) the distance to China going east (thanks to the Portuguese, who owned that route). This was far out of reach of the ships of the day so nobody tried to go that way.
Columbus had the crackpot idea that this common assumption was off by about 8,000 miles and that China was actually something like 5,000 miles west. Ferdinand and Isabella knew that this was contrary to all current authority, but they took a gamble anyway and gave Columbus a rather small stipend to prove his point.
The rest is history.
Interestingly, Columbus was certain he had reached the orient because the New World was right where he expected to find China. It took a while before he realized that he had discovered a new continent.

The Brits always shaved or at least from mid-19th century on and that probably influenced the States. On the British Antiques Roadshow I've seen a few times when there's been a hairy-pitted nude e.g. painted on a porcelain vase, the expert's pointed out that it's a Continental piece (or porcelain that is!) even before looking for a factory or maker's mark because of it.

It sounds like the Roman beads were lamp beads. Most likely trade goods that eventually somehow made their way to Japan. I say that because if they were common to Rome you wouldn't need the natron content to nail down the source. The shape and style of manufacture would've been enough of a clue for the eggheads.
OTOH, they could have been common in Rome but the researchers were clueless.
Beads are a fascinating subject for Archaeologists as they leave usually leave far more than a footprint of occupation. More often they reveal routes of trade.

We had to watch the "wear your seatbelt or this will be you" highway gore flicks in school when I was a kid.
*******
Hah! How about the Catholic versions where a girl in the back seat is killed in a car crash while being impaled by some stud, with her legs in the air?
According to the nuns she would have an eternity to repent, with her ladyparts all burning and blistering and stuff...
(The way I remember it, most girls back then would see the film and say to themselves, "I'll take my chances")

Did anyone else watch train safety movies back in school? We watched one called "The Long Way Home". After every little vignette, the announcer would always say "Little Johnny took the long way home". Funny as shit.

Funny you mention that, just today i was reading one of the local liberal blogs (because that's the only kind of local blog in this shithole unfortunately) and a discussion of sci-fi ensued in one of the threads and Demolotion Man was brought up as an example of sci-fi warning of the evils of capitalism/privatization and corporations. I thought about telling them that they missed the point entirely, but by then they had decided that pretty much all sci-fi was a warning of the evils of capitalism/privatization and corporations so i didn't bother.

What's really funny are the idiots who think that recycling glass gets their dumb asses anywhere....it's only made from the most common element in the earth's crust, plus on a good day only 30% of the glass put in recycle bins ever makes it back into another coke bottle or crack pipe.

“Two people who committed the offence of consuming alcohol for the third time have been sentenced to be executed. The verdict has been confirmed by the supreme court and we are preparing to administer it,” he said.
Under Iranian Sharia law, certain crimes such as sodomy, rape, theft, fornication, apostasy and consumption of alcohol for the third time are considered to be “claims of God” and therefore have mandatory death sentences.

That ain't the only place the thugs in DC are pushing to give up US rights to an international tribunal -- The UN's Law of the Sea Treaty is being pushed too as discussed in this June 14th article :
Former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld urged U.S. senators to reject the Law of the Sea Treaty backed by the Obama administration because it would force rich countries to give to poorer ones.
“I do not believe the United States should endorse a treaty that makes it a legal obligation for productive countries to pay royalties to less productive countries, based on rhetoric about the common heritage of mankind,” Rumsfeld said today in testimony before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

And then Obama said "fuck you, lick my balls," and announced they weren't going to cooperate with Arizona. That's the shitty part.

If your taste runs to more modern films, there's the excellent Charade, starring Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn, featuring James Coburn and Walter Matthau.
