And we're off to a bright new shiny non-pre-owned week...
Well Staples has a online test that measures your reading speed.
Since I utterly failed phonics in elementary school I was forced to learn to read almost entirely through word pattern recognition. So it took me a lot longer to master reading but on the plus side since then I've always been a fast reader and can even read upside-down text as well. That said I still think phonics is the way to go for most students learning English.
And here's my score - I read a bit more leisurely than usual since I had a feeling there would be a test afterwards:
U.S. Offered Escape to Helpful Pakistani Doctor, Was Rejected
Okay maybe the government isn't as stupid as it's been made out to be.
Tribal court documents show that the Pakistani doctor who was sentenced to 33 years in prison after helping the Central Intelligence Agency track down Osama bin Laden had not been charged with treason, as some Pakistani officials had initially reported.
...Further, Reuters reported yesterday that the doctor, for unclear reasons, rejected an offer by U.S. officials to resettle him and his family outside of Pakistan, in the wake of the bin Laden raid.
SpaceX mission control vs. NASA mission control
Although to be fair SpaceX will probably evolve into something more like NASA's as they begin to do space missions routinely.
Estimates by The Economist suggest that the average British size 14 pair of women's trousers is now more than four inches wider at the waist than it was in the 1970s. In other words, today's size 14 is really what used to be labelled a size 18; a size 10 is really a size 14. (American sizing is different, but the trend is largely the same.)
...Pizzas now come in regular, large and very large. Starbucks coffees are Tall, Grande, Venti or (soon) Trenta. "Small" seems to be a forbidden word.Inflation is also distorting the travel business. A five-star hotel used to mean the ultimate in luxury, but now six- and seven-star resorts are popping up as new hotels award themselves inflated ratings as a marketing tool.
The US Army is Getting Smaller - And Better
In response to the Congressional order to sharply reduce strength, the army has greatly reduced recruiting efforts and is making it more difficult to reenlist. A lot of soldiers, who would have been allowed to reenlist over the last two decades, will not make the cut over the next few years.
Meanwhile it's getting much more difficult to join the army. Not only is a high school diploma required but you need good grades. High schools known for low standards and graduating students just for appearances sake, not because the grad was qualified, are avoided.
The ancient cliché that "only losers join" is long dead now. The military is now a club that many want to join but only few are good enough to get in.Recruiting standards have also soared in the other services, particularly the air force, which has always been picky. The marines have gone from seeking a "few good men" to demanding a "few even better men" (and women).
The Ecstasy of Gold - Orchestra Style
Shamelessly stolen from rdbrewer's twitter feed. And here is the original movie scene followed by the finale - 25 minutes of some of the best cinematography and music ever.
The Islamic 'Breast-feeding' Loophole
Under sharia men and women who aren't related aren't supposed to mix. But Dr. Izzat Atiya, head of Egypt's Al Azhar University's Department of Hadith, has found a loophole:
He said that if a woman fed a male colleague "directly from her breast" at least five times they would establish a family bond and thus be allowed to be alone together at work. "Breast feeding an adult puts an end to the problem of the private meeting, and does not ban marriage," he ruled. "A woman at work can take off the veil or reveal her hair in front of someone whom she breastfed."
Well that is one way to build morale at work.
Tom Cruise Is Remaking The Magnificent Seven
For all the criticism that it has received, The Expendables was at the very least its own movie. But now MGM and Tom Cruise are going to borrow Sylvester Stallone's already-borrowed formula of cramming the biggest action stars in the world into one mega-testosterone-explosion and dilute it with the current fad of remaking every good film of the last 50 years.
Up next for MGM and Cruise - The Magnificent Seven. The 1960 Western was the original Expendables, as it starred Steve McQueen, Yul Brynner, James Coburn, Charles Bronson, Eli Wallach, Robert Vaughn
Why? Because they can. And it pays off often enough to encourage them to keep doing it.

[*Best trivia; Robert Vaughn basically reprised his Magnificent Seven role in Battle Beyond the Stars, which co-starred Sybil Danning, who then basically reprised *her* role in Battle Beyond the Stars in Seven Magnificent Gladiators. Therefore, they must have Lou Ferrigno reprise his role in the new Magnificent Seven remake.]
Not to say it will be a good movie, but there's no reason to think it can't be. First thing; shoot it like a western--i.e., no shaky-cam.

The SpaceX vs. NASA picture is a little unfair, IMHO. Computer's aren't perfect, and NASA has humans on the line. That last thing they want is to be the agency that killed 4 people because their desktop locked up. (FWIW, we have no idea from that picture if NASA has digital documents open too, and the binders are just backups.)

The Seven Samurai was a good movie, and related to Japanese culture.
The Magnificent Seven was a good movie with somewhat similar characters, but it was related to the culture of the Old West, and not very Japanese at all.
Yes, some of the themes of the Seven Samurai were in the Magnificent Seven. But then the Japanese movie "Ran" was also based on Shakespeare's "Hamlet", yet it was not Hamlet and still a good movie in it's own right.
I'm thinking Cruise is going to make "The Fabulous Seven". Want to bet that one of the seven gunslingers is a woman? And most assuredly, one of the gunslingers will be a Black Man.
Movies are mostly about the myths that we want to tell about ourselves and the propaganda that Hollywood wants to shove down our throats, and woman being "totally equal" to men is one of the latest and most potent myths of our age.

Cruise has had a career bump recently, but the fact is that for most of his career he's been one of the best producers in Hollywood. Cruise was never just a star, he was a guy intimately involved in the making of his films, characterized most obviously by his consistently seeking out great directors to work with.
Again, this doesn't mean the remake will be any good. Still, I wonder if Clint Eastwood would be interested in directing...

Speaking of Islam, I didn't get a chance to post this in the book thread today, so I am going to post here instead. I'm still reading "The History of the World in 100 Objects" which is written by the director of the British Museum, some of it has been good, most of it has been out and out liberal balderdash. But the section on the glory of the spread of Islam has been the worst yet. Apparently, even though there is no longer a global caliphate, it is still a dream of Muslims and thanks to the Internet "like minded" young Muslim males can join together to pursue this goal.
WTF? Seriously director of the British Museum? That lofty goal is known in other circles as terrorism, but, umm, yeah, excellent, let's cheer on young Muslim males joining together to spread Islam globally cause I'm sure they only do that in the most peaceful and loving way possible, like with candy and daisies and stuff like that.

I have serious doubts about that 2% number, even. Since family and friends are self-selected population groups, I'll ignore those and just state that between high school and college (2000 undergrad, and I knew or knew of most of them), I only knew of a handful of homosexuals. Certainly there were some who were not out at that time, but even assuming there were many closeted gays in those groups, my guess would put it shy of 1%, closer to one per thousand than 3 per hundred.

I've seen those numbers touted as well...the 1-2% self-reporting may be solid, but I'd want to see the operational definitions of "homosexual encounter" and "bisexual" before deciding what the data mean. Two 19 year old girls kissing for attention at a bar would technically be a homo / bisexual activity, but doesn't necessarily make them bisexual.

With women, as many as 10% may be bisexual.
Posted by: Alex at June 03, 2012 10:20 PM (tGh6R)
I've seen those numbers touted as well...the 1-2% self-reporting may be solid, but I'd want to see the operational definitions of "homosexual encounter" and "bisexual" before deciding what the data mean. Two 19 year old girls kissing for attention at a bar would technically be a homo / bisexual activity, but doesn't necessarily make them bisexual.

That's a solid point, actually. I tried to stick to HS and college with my SWAG since I figured that the homosexual students hadn't self-selected by geographical distribution, but with college, that assumption falls apart. Assuming college and post-college (or equivalent for non-students) is the time when most come out (which I don't know and won't look up) then the geographic self selection of gays would definitely come into play. The current 2% number could be reasonable accurate. The follow-up 7-8% (men with gay experiences) and 10% (bisexual women) are impossible to evaluate without knowing the operational definitions of the survey criteria, though everyday experience suggests they're on the high side.

I have a theory that there are very few actual lesbians, but women are more likely to be bisexual. It dates back to when humans lived in small tribes and life was fairly brutal and short. Fewer men means women are competing for support, so two women who can find sexual attraction to one another are more likely to share a mate and provide resources for each other rather than competing.
Men, on the other hand, don't benefit from bisexuality but do benefit from homosexuality, as it removes men from competition for mates and creates a small group that focuses on the survival of the whole tribe.
The 7-8% homosexual activity is likely overlapping with other sexual fetishes in some way.

That's a load of crap. If you can't control territory, then you can't project force. If you can't project force, then you do not have military capability. Air power and ballistic missiles have too many limitations to ever gain dominance on the battlefield. Furthermore, there are plenty of situations where they simply do not work.

Didn't get into the first two episodes. Either I closed the Netflix window too soon, or the show was still finding its proper space during those formative eposides. But the third one was amazing, and I happened to be on a flight from Asia that showed a couple from the second season, and wow! The guy who plays Holmes is superb; his voice is like Alan Rickman, but more so, and his face and demeanor is exactly what a modern Sherlock Holmes should be -- and the writing! Is there some British Whedonesque person I should be paying attention to here? Because someone behind this show really knows what they're doing, and it would be interesting to know his name.

The destructive powers of the six-month-old little dog in our house amazes me. We had Great Danes when I was a little kid, so anything under 80 pounds seems little to me. Ladd is actually pretty good sized for a Border Collie. But having to watch him like a hawk when he isn't in his pen is getting kind of old.

Be sure to make sure that dog is full grown up before the butcher make meat. The hairs can make dog look big when it small and then run short of meat for the feeding of family friends and guest. Make sure to boil the grasses long time and not add leather of shoes until completed the boiling for best result. Leather should best soaked for time until before using. No you can't. We've learned that the hard way in Afghanistan. We can kill bad guys, but the minute we leave they come back. Meanwhile, you never have enough assets to support the guys on the ground, so not everyone is carrying 2000 pound bombs. My brigade never had the manpower to do more than control the main roads. If we went 500m off the main highway, we were black on ammo from fighting.
The US army is still structured to fight the big one during the cold war - if we ever have to fight an enemy with technology on par with our own we're going to be on the receiving end of the painful lessons we've been teaching other people.
The idea that we're still structured to fight the Soviets is bullshit. We haven't been that way for a while thanks to Iraq and Afghanistan. And yes, we'll be on the receiving end of a painful lesson, which is why we need a larger military capable to handling the situation rather than a small one that suddenly discovers all it's neat toys aren't worth shit and that numbers still count for something.

The potential fracturing of the EU makes what you say even more true. A broken Europe will present opportunities to the Russians that did not exist previously. I doubt they'd roll out the armor and go into conquest mode, but were that to happen, we'd be providing the manpower and footing the bill to stop it.
Personally, I think if the Russians did decide to go more aggressive than they are now, they'd continue their actions in Georgia, take Azerbaijan, retake Kazakhstan, and really lust after the Ukraine first prior to Poland, etc. That said, if I can spitball it while I type, somebody over there has already planned the action.

Splunge, Doctor Who can be pretty variable. And people's opinions on which Doctor is best can be vitriolic. For example, I cannot stand Matt Smith, the new doctor, but others think he is fine. I think that the writers, producers, and to a certain extent the crew tends to put some of their political and sexual agenda in the newer episodes of Doctor Who. I think the same thing is reflected in the Sherlock episodes too.

NATO has outlived its usefulness. We have France back in and Turkey on the way out. I can't see what is left to it.
You're right. We really chewed the pooch on allowing that EU crap - which we knew we would end up footing the bill for (as always). But, that was mostly due to Bush Sr. who was one of the biggest idiots ever to inhabit the White House and, contrary to the talk about him, didn't know jackshit about foreign affairs (though he seems almost saintly in comparison to what we have, now). The EMU and all the pan-European stuff was first and foremost an attack on American hegemony (even though Europe was a suicidal basket-case without the US in control).
Europe has to be let go, though. They are a drowning man that will take anyone down who is dumb enough to get near or try to save them.
Americans (not dems, but actual Americans who love America) have very few true allies in the world. Very, very few.

You made my point better than I did. I guess I'm wondering what will happen between nations as the EU crumbles and easy spoils are available to ambitious states. I don't suspect that any kind of war will break out, but the prospect can't be ignored. Germany certainly won't go into an expansionist mode - the national character has changed greatly since their last attempt at that, but the Russians certainly might find it tempting, and Putin has proven himself to be an unrepentant cold-warrior. I don't expect anything to break out in NATO countries, but those in the EU that are on the periphery should be nervous at this point, seeing as how their potential defenders are bankrupt and / or unwilling to defend them. As I mentioned earlier, Georgia, Azerbaijan, and the Ukraine should be worried if regional hostility breaks out, since none of the NATO countries save the USA have the ability or national will to do anything about it. I can't imagine they're feeling too great about the state of things in Poland, either.

It's a political union ... it's not a political union ... it's not a tax ... it's definitely a tax ...
The way the EU was born and then shoved its way through the Euro nations was one of the worst things I had ever seen (though far outdone, now, by our Indonesian Imbecile and the insanity that is happening here). I remember when they tried to sell the Euro, assuring everyone that it was purely monetary and would have no impact on soveriegnty - as if that were even possible in the most fevered leftist minds. Then, the grand ratification of the Constitution ... "Did we call it a Constitution? We meant a treaty, so you don't get to vote, assholes." And now they're actually trying to sell political union as the only answer to their intense stupidity that got them into this corner (that anyone with a brain saw coming years and years ago).
The insanity of the last couple of decades has been something I never would have imagined. But, I got a nice lesson in how the Nazis arose in full view, which I used to find a bit perplexing when I was a kid.
As to the UN, I'm still mega-pissed that we're still in it. It's the most ridiculous, unnatural, insane institution ever imagined. An empowered, peerless, competitionless entity. WTFFFF? And we're STILL in it. It is crazy. The UN is something that only teenage girls would imagine should exist.

Crying Game? People talk about "Magic Negro" in movies, good lord. I REALLY HATE the new Army slogan, 'a force for good'. Its NOT. Its supposed to be there to do hateful nasty things to people who attack us... because trying to 'fix' the world is just bankrupting us, and getting our Men Killed.
IMO the Army should be used to go and 'spank' those who attack us... NOT defend the entire world (who then will not pay for their own defense), nor try to remake 1000s of years of failed countries work.

Its only against the law when Government computers get hit by virus's... so 'if' this is a Presidential approved virus, it is by definition a program... and so even though they are getting access to every bit of info we have, its NOT against the law.

Laser grips... yes. I have a couple, but my AR is set up with a sling and iron sights too.. but I'm a vet from the 80s' when that's all we had.
I liked the first season of BBC Sherlock and Holmes and am glad to hear they've veered away from the gay stuff. I'll wait to see if Amazon drops the price.
Cooters!
Mag Seven... one of my fav movies and holds up well. I've seen it over 10 times and recently sprung for the blu ray. It's a good anti-pacifist , anti-gun-grabber movie... TOTALLY inappropriate for Hollywood to make, so a remake will be interesting. If they were topical, they'd take it modern and take it to the middle east.. Villagers forced to pay off tribe of al-qaeda Xpat Marines/Army in area doing post service work come together to protect village. Naaa... never work.

Federal Gov and Fed Reserve bank has created a situation where we have High Inflation (over 8% but won't admit it), and Low to NO interest rates...
Making saving stupid... as inflation is greater than you can get in simple interest.... forcing everyone into the Stock Market to try to keep up with inflation... creating an artificialy high stock market.
Bubble just burst... just like the artificial Government induced housing bubble...
Worst off? The elderly who have to live off their investments... and have very fixed incomes....
Winner? The Federal Governments Debt, and those in debt, as the dollar declines in value due to 'quantitative easing" (which is printing money).

There is a big change that happens when you have certain functionality in an item you ALWAYS have with you. My previous cameras got little use because I was never the sort to carry a camera if I didn't have a specific intent to use it. And once upon a time having e-mail on the go wasn't very important.
Now, I'd feel crippled without email send/receive in my pocket (especially since my work sends me different places constantly) and I've taken more pictures in the last few years than in my whole life before getting a Blackberry, then a Galaxy SII a few months ago. The Samsung has a pretty good camera in it but it could be bested for a low cost. The one huge advantage it has is that it is always close at hand.
I'm waiting for the day when I can have a 3D camera pair built unnoticeably into my glasses with enough battery and storage to record my entire day, leaving me to decided later if any of it merits saving.

Worse, it would point to specific policy failures that made the disaster possible in the first place.
Also the guaranteed failure of the cargo cult mentality that caused the inverted economics in the first place. "High home ownership is an indicator of a strong economy, so boosting home ownership will boost the economy!"

What, you never used a zoom lens before?
Unless you're in the habit of dating women several times your size and inserting your whole head in there, presumably with some means of breathing, you're going to want the camera to be somewhere else. Not to mention, even if you found a woman with a positive outlook on getting some literal head, the glasses would probably be a deal breaker, unless they were like close fitting goggles.
I imagine . Crumb addressed this issue at some point. He seemed to draw a lot of couples where the woman was a giantess compared to the man.

Not too many. Those memories have been wiped from the public consciousness. You probably can't find 5 people who know that the prime rate was 21% back then. In fact, those memories are so long gone that that definition of the "prime rate" was back when EVERYONE was basically sub-prime (as the only ones who got the prime rate were the absolute AAA best risks who had enough collateral to not even be a risk. Nowadays, when people say "sub-prime loans" they are talking about "shit loans", instead of being the loans for most normal people, as they always were.
Even worse, while we have historically low rates, the national debt is still concentrated in the shortest terms ever, meaning that the feral government is more sensitive to rising rates than it has ever been. Normally, when 30 year rates are this ridiculously low the national debt should be financed with long-term bonds, locking in good rates ... but we can't do that because the only one actually buying long term feral paper is the Fed!
It's even worse than you imagine and the pain that we are going to have to go through is like nothing America has ever experienced, including the Great Depression. We are in the eye of the worst monetary storm this nation has ever seen.
Sadly, defaulting on debt doesn't even fix things, since default (or devaluation) only works if we are not still running deficits. Of course, this little tidbit of common sense is never discussed, not even in the pathetic situation that Europe has happily thrown itself into.

How often has the worst case scenario actually happened in your life?
Posted by: Lampshade at June 04, 2012 02:34 AM (lkdo/)
More than a few times ... but I'm not talking about a worst case scenario. I'm talking about the historical record from no longer than 35 years ago. I'm talking about the facts of the situation now. Having the national debt be concentrated in the shorter term means that we need to turn over huge amounts of debt at high frequency. When interest rates rise - not even to historical levels but to normal levels - that will be death.
We have a 30 year bond at 2.5%. Do you understand how fucked up that is? The 10 year is at 1.5% (and our national debt is at far shorter terms than that). At those low rates, there's no reason to keep money in a bank, which makes bank runs much more likely (especially as no one with a brain can have any faith in the security of money in a bank).
The worst case scenario involves lots of chaos and violence. I'm just talking about the middling likelihood of disintegration or splitting, though extreme pain to the populace is guaranteed in any case.

1. People don't swap freely unless both think they're getting something better than they're giving up. Thus, free trade make both parties happier and more prosperous.
2. Coercion (force) will frequently lead to exchanges which are not mutually beneficial (i.e. -- muggers don't generally leave their "customers" as satisfied as prostitutes).
3. Governments have a monopoly on the lawful use of force.
From there, it can be easily shown that prosperity is maximized when government interference with trade is minimized.

I always found it more useful to think about (average-sized) pages per hour, and to differentiate among different types of material: science fiction I read around 100 pages/hour, current events round 50, history around 40-50 and philosophy something like 5-10, maybe a bit faster if the argument is especially clear and I've thought about the issues before. Anyone who tells you he or she can read serious philosophy much faster than that, and have a clue about it, is deluded or lying.
