Thomas Sowell: The Fallacy of 'Meaningful Work'

It was painful, for example, to see an internationally renowned scholar say that what low-income young people needed was "meaningful work." But this is a notion common among educated elites, regardless of how counterproductive its consequences may be for society at large, and for low-income youngsters especially.

What is "meaningful work"?

The underlying notion seems to be that it is work whose performance is satisfying or enjoyable in itself. But if that is the only kind of work that people should have to do, how is garbage to be collected, bed pans emptied in hospitals or jobs with life-threatening dangers to be performed?

...Telling young people that some jobs are "menial" is a huge disservice to them and to the whole society. Subsidizing them in idleness while they wait for "meaningful work" is just asking for trouble, both for them and for all those around them.

And too often universities and parents encourage young adults to stay in a idle holding pattern while they're waiting for the 'real' job to appear. That serves no one's interest but especially not recent graduates with little work experience and few practical skills.

The truth is that very little work is 'meaningful work' in the above sense or else it'd just be called 'meaningful happy-fun-time' instead. But there is some meaning in all work - even in the menial. And every day you wait for the dream job, there's someone else out there with the same dream who's mastering the details of getting stuff done, making contacts, and getting paid in the process.

How A Quebec Ruling Could Make 1.2 Million Canadians Married, Against Their Will

It turns out that Quebec has an official "couple" status that's like marriage-lite:

De facto spouses are defined by Quebec's law as two people who have been living together for a year or more without being married and who check the "couple" box on their income tax statement form. Quebec's lawmakers have deliberately chosen not to give de facto couples the same rights and responsibilities that married couples have under the Law of Quebec, to preserve the freedom of choice. Upon the termination of a relationship, "no matter how long cohabitation has lasted, de facto spouses have no legal support obligation to each other, even if one spouse is in need and the other has a high income." Quebec is the only province in Canada where spousal support payments are not recognized by law for de facto spouses.

...An astonishing 34.6 percent of all Quebec couples are de facto couples, and one half of couples under 40 are not married. A full 60 percent of Quebec children are born out of wedlock.

And everyone was satisfied with this arrangement until a Quebec appeals court ruled in a 2010 case that de facto marriages are suddenly de jure too. Until this is settled by the Supreme Court it turns out that in Canada you can't be a little bit married either.

Ayrton Senna's Heel-and-Toe Braking Technique

Racers use this all the time but I realized after watching this video that by trial and error I've done something similar when trying to drive (too) fast through curves.

Heel-toe or heel-and-toe double-declutching is used before entry into a turn while a vehicle is under braking, preparing the transmission to be in the optimal range of rpm to accelerate out of the turn. One benefit of downshifting before entering a turn is to eliminate the jolt to the drivetrain, or any other unwanted dynamics. ...Another benefit is that "heel-and-toeing" allows the driver to downshift at the last moment before entering the turn, after starting braking and the car has slowed, so the engine speed will not be high enough when the lower gear is engaged.

Jack Vance's Classic Moon Moth Short Story Retold as a Terrific Graphic Novel

Well Jack Vance has always been one of my favorite sci-fi and fantasy authors so I'm glad to see his works still remain popular and are being reworked into new mediums. Moon Moth is one of his finer short stories about a man who must catch a murderer on a planet where everyone wears masks at all times and may change them according to mood and change in status.

The story takes place on a planet with a post-scarcity society in which everyone wears elaborately constructed masks appropriate to their social status. The inhabitants also carry a bunch of different musical instruments with them, because instead of talking to each other, they sing and play a particular instrument suited to the content and context of the conversation.

"The Moon Moth" is about a man (I think he's from Earth), who gets sent to Sirene as a kind of emissary. He isn't prepared to live in this society, where a minor social gaffe can easily result in an instant beheading by the offended party.

"The Moon Moth" is the name of the story, but it is also the name of the low-status mask the Earthman ends up wearing. Initially he chose a high-ranking mask but was warned he would be killed quickly because he wouldn't know how to comport himself like a person worthy of such a mask.

You can read the entire story here. If you enjoy it, you'll probably enjoy most of his stuff.

30 Famous People With Law Degrees

Lawyers - it's like they're everywhere.

Okay I knew about Howard Cosell but there are others - both good and bad:

25. Tony La Russa. After bouncing from baseball team to baseball team - mostly in the minors - Tony La Russa figured he'd probably better have a backup plan and graduated from the Florida State University College of Law in 1978. He was offered a position coaching the White Sox farm team right around the same time. "I decided I'd rather ride the buses in the minor leagues than practice law for a living," he later said. La Russa was called up to manage in the majors shortly thereafter.
17. Fidel Castro. Castro was admitted to the bar in 1950 after studying at the University of Havana. He had his own firm for a time - Azpiazo, Castro & Resende.

11 1-Joffen, you will really enjoy the Reagan Diaries! I read it last year, and Ronaldus writes as he spoke and lived-wry, sensitive, tough...it was awesome. It is also interesting to read the history of the 80's through his eyes, and through his perspective. Iran Contra has a much different impact reading his view of it. Now, as for "meaningful jobs." My dad always told me to do my best no matter what the job was, because I owed that to whoever was paying me their money to work. Honor their hard work for making that money, and giving me an opportunity to earn some of it. Is it really that outre to want to work hard, and respect the person paying you?

21 I have a shitty job. I work at Walmart, and it's my own damn fault. I dropped out of high school and pretty much lived off of welfare for a few years. My first job was at a call center, but then I left for Calgary and got a good-paying job at a warehouse. Anyway, now I'm in the States via green card thru marriage, and actually got my GED three years ago. Now I'm getting a divorce at thirty and work at Walmart. I don't blame anybody but myself for this (well, the divorce is only half my fault, I guess). I will never go on welfare and remain a staunch conservative, which is probably surprising since many people in my situation are liberals. The point is, the whole 'meaningless work' idea is utter bullshit. Ya gotta find meaning is other places in your life. And yes, this is the same guy who announced he was gonna kill himself a few months ago, FWIW.

40 Regarding the law in Quebec about couples living together, I believe that under the English Common Law, a man and a woman who lived together for a year were considered legally married, hence the term "common law wife." i suspect that, since early American law was based on the Common Law, that rule may still be on the books in some states.

Some states still have a form of common-law rule but I believe there are more conditions such as living together for N years and holding yourselves out in public as a married couple. The original common-law marriage rules protected the rights of widows and children if the couple never was legally married.

66 I agree a lot with what Sowell says, as well as a comment I read about what makes some work meaningful is the life it provides you. If the work itself was fun, then why would you get paid to do it? This is IMO why so many single males hate such jobs the worst of anyone: they aren't enduring a less-than-stunning job for any better purpose: they're just existing in an ever-shortening life.

Therefore, I think Sowell is being a little unfair in treating "meaningful" as synonymous with "fun." The people who find no meaning in their jobs do so because their jobs are the biggest part of their lives...and their lives have no meaning. Being upset with *that* condition is truly justified. (Which doesn't mean it's the government's job to fix it for you.)

If you are cleaning floors to raise your kids to a better life, you will not feel the work is nearly as meaningless as a 55 year-old who goes home to an empty apartment and watches four hours of TV before passing out, drinking in the armchair.

Finally, it's worth remembering Karl Rove devalued hard labor by saying he didn't want any son of his doing it. He was pitching for liberalized immigration at the time. I've never much liked him since.

70 Rick Scott answers the FAQs re Florida's efforts to protect the rights of eligible voters:

Q: How many non-U.S. citizens will remain on the voting rolls during the 2012 election cycle?
ItÂ’s impossible to say for sure. Until the federal government grants DOS access to the SAVE database and helps ensure ineligible voters cannot cast a ballot, DOS will be unable to know what percentage of the 182,000 potential non-citizens are truly ineligible to vote.

72 Some states still have a form of common-law rule but I believe there are more conditions such as living together for N years and holding yourselves out in public as a married couple. The original common-law marriage rules protected the rights of widows and children if the couple never was legally marriage.

73 From Wiki.....

Common-law marriage in the United States can still be contracted in 10 states and the District of Columbia, can no longer be contracted in 27 states, and was never permitted in 13 states. The requirements for a common-law marriage to be validly contracted differ from state to state. Nevertheless, all states — including those that have abolished the contract of common-law marriage within their boundaries — recognize common-law marriages lawfully contracted in those jurisdictions that permit it. Some states that do not recognize common law marriage also afford legal rights to parties to a putative marriage (i.e. in circumstances when someone who was not actually married, e.g. due to a failure to obtain or complete a valid marriage license from the proper jurisdiction, believed in good faith that he or she was married) that arise before a marriage's invalidity is discovered.

Common-law marriage can still be contracted in ten states (Alabama, Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Montana, New Hampshire (posthumously), Rhode Island, South Carolina, Texas, and Utah) and in the District of Columbia.

Actually, that is the easiest threat to handle in a time of budgetary reduction. Stop trying to minimize enemy collateral damage to such an extreme as we do now.

Drop a dumb bomb instead of a smart one.

Use indirect/long distance fire instead of sending in the infantry.

Etc.

And if we do pursue COIN in a more traditional manner then we do now, it will work better too.

138 Quebec's provincial law is Roman Law and not Common Law used in the rest of the country. I don't know how much it apes the French-French "Code Napoleonienne" that's from after the British conquest of Quebec. Federal laws still apply to items of federal jurisdiction although the Frogs have been given dispensations like having their own Quebec Pension Plan instead of the federal one.

I'm pretty certain Common Law marriage in English Canada is five years cohabitation and I vaguely recall it started because married couples here get screwed with higher taxes (or fewer deductions) so people were shacking up to avoid the taxes and this was to close that loophole.

Not being a male whore I haven't paid much attention to it at tax time or the like.

BTW, regardless of the crazed spin being served up here, the sly little half-grin that this woman keeps making as she talks annoys the hell out of me. If they are going to try to sell this line, why use someone like this? http://bit.ly/Kurt8p And check out the bar graph. When Romney was governor, the governor was responsible for job creation, but when Obama is president, he gets sole credit for all jobs created in the state? And where did these numbers come from? Also, the claim is 4.6 million jobs. Divide that into 5 trillion of additional debt, and how much per job is that? Given that kind of money to piss away, I'm sure I could make more jobs than that. Better still, had Obama and the Congress actually used Obama's honeymoon period to make real cuts and actually reduce the debt, then natural market forces would have made a huge number of jobs that Obama could now claim credit for. Too late now.

I'm surprised that Urgent Care doesn't do stitches.

Last year  I got a bad burn on my little finger (bacon grease) with skin immediately sloughing.   ER visit included a PA visit, debriding of loose skin (no local as it was already dead skin) a tetanus shot and dressing the wound.  1 HR waiting and about 30 minutes of time for my care including paperwork.  My bill was very similar to yours.

Madison, WI- After narrowly surviving by 7% and 200,000 votes, a chastened Governor Scott Walker will attempt to pick up the pieces of a bitterly divided Wisconsin that was roiled by his sharply partisan attacks on workers rights.

The razor thin Walker margin also deals a devastating blow to presumptive Republican nominee Mitt Romney as exit polls showed President Obama coasting to an overwhelming victory in the Badger State.

Growing up in a farming family there were lots of opportunities for work with no apparent reward except that you got to do more of it.  Later in life, as a young GI (approximate income = $2400 per annum) always had at least one other job, quite often in the custodial area.

To this day, the most satisfying work I've ever done was plowing/cultivating wheat fields.  Took a great deal of pride in leaving very straight furrows and no tire tracks.

Do what you must.  Find meaning where it may be.

169 Billy Bob.

Don't get me started on the inflated costs of health care.

However, in fairness, the emergency room costs are not for what's done it's for the space being taken up. It's a place where most everything is priority and has an intensive setup of expensive equipment that stands idle otherwise.

Also drs. % nurses standing by whatever the reason.

The guy who stitched him could have been a plastic surgeon and all the supplies are at premium prices due to guaranteed sterility, one time usage and guaranteed to work wo fail.

All that adds up. It also sounds about the same as the emergency costs I endured about 7 years ago for a dog bite so consider that inflation hasn't changed the price much. (I'm surprised).

Be aware that those costs were for the EMERGENCY ROOM only. You may be getting a bill in a few months for the Doctor's.

Happened to me and I'd already settled with the dog owner so I had to pay those cost out of pocket.

One of the things that I think wastes more money and makes going to the hospital confusing and opaque is the way they bill for their services.

No other service will not tell you how much what you want done will cost up front. Most every other profession or practice or service will automatically give you a very close estimate before you have to agree to pay. Not health care. You're required to sign and agree before you even have a clue what it will cost. Even if you have the presence of mind to ask, most will not have an answer and will defer your question to a later time.

Ridiculous and I think done on purpose.

My grandparents survived the depression and lived very frugally all their lives. My grandfather had been in the Navy and, although never deployed to the front, was an airplane mechanic back home until illness forced him out.

He raised three kids and then raised several grandkids while too sick to hold down a FT job. He refused to take a nickle in help from the government and crushed cans, stripped scraps of wiring, rebuilt junk bicycles....everything he could do to keep his family fed. And when he "built" his home, he did it with his own two hands.

The heel and toe technique dates back to the early racing days without synchronized transmissions.  Engine speed matching was critical to the downshift.  After synchros showed up, it was no longer mechanically necessary, but improved/smoothed the downshift and so continued in practice.

That being said, my racing hero Parnelli Jones said that if you have the throttle on, put it on the floor and if you've got the brakes on, put that pedal on the floor.  Second axiom:  If you're under control you're not going fast enough!

After Senna's death, fully automated transmission/clutches came to F1, even including RPM matching.

I think infants choose at some point whether or not to be smart. Those who choose to be smart find themselves in a situation they don't understand, and they actually re-wire their own brains for improved cognitive ability to try to sort it all out. This would explain why so many geniuses come from broken homes.

264 We hired a retired PhD, a college professor who's very well traveled, to do entry-level maintenance work around our church. At first I didn't want to hire him, but our pastor, a friend of his, talked me into it.

Boy does he do a good job.  The bathrooms are spotless every single day, the trash cans are ALWAYS empty and the 200 chairs are always on time around the tables set up in the gym for the funerals.

He's cheerful, with a great sense of humor, and he'll accurately quote Shakespeare or Milton while Windexing the foyer.  He takes supervision flawlessly from our maintenance supervisor, also a very good worker but much younger than himself.

Now there's someone who knows what "meaningful" means.  It means doing whatever job is in front of you with integrity, care and diligence.  I hope he's with us a long long time.

359 It was also the war that saw the Victoria Cross instituted (although only for officers at first) with the bronze for the medals having been smelted from the barrels of captured Russian guns.

Other than specific Rifle regiments (I think of Caucasus types) the Russian infantry were armed with smooth-bore muskets (although converted to percussion cap through the 1840s) while the Allies were armed with rifled muzzle-loaders using Minié balls.

The Times of London had such detailed information in its pages that a Russian general said something along the lines of "We don't need spies when we've got the Times".

If you enjoy military history, I highly recommend George Macdonald Fraser's Flashman series of books (including Flashman At The Charge mainly about the Crimea) that you can Google for more information.

386 Yes, SantaRosaStan.

I think the first one like that was the Waterloo Medal that was instituted because the death rate was so high in the campaign that it was felt it deserved a medal for all ranks (and not just officers).

I thought that it wasn't issued until 1848 however by which time alot of the officers and men had died but that next of kin got it but I may have that confused with (according to Wiki) a General Service Medal for earlier wars that was issued in 1848.

This weekend the right wing Heritage Foundation is hosting an awards dinner in honor of Andrew Breitbart, and the award for “Best Blog” will go to “Ace of Spades.”

The same “Ace of Spades” who said this about women’s rights advocate Sandra Fluke:

Please donÂ’t call Sandra Fluke a slut. Respect her for what she is, a shiftless rent-a-cooch from East Whoreville.

— Bizarro 5 President (@AceofSpadesHQ)

Every day, the right wing establishment shows us what theyÂ’re all about. Give that man an award!

Let me tell you about some "meaningful work" I did as a college student. I shoveled maggots the size of fishing worms out of the blood drying room of a slaughterhouse in 110 degree heat. Started each day puking from the smell of fetid cattle blood. There is you some fucking meaningful work. More useful than an entire year as a leftard intellectual on the taxpayer payroll. In fact, leftard intellectuals had a lot in common with those maggots. At least during breaks to gag down a sandwich, I could shoot at the world class rats rinning aroung the bone piles.

405 The service medals for service in the Boer War are great because they have up to five 'bars' with the names of the campaigns above the huge silver medal.  --Ladysmith, Transvaal, etc.  ---each one is unique, because all have the name, unit, and service number of the soldier

Barky making a joke at the LGBT fundraiser:

I want to thank my wonderful friend who accepts a little bit of teasing about Michelle beating her in pushups — (laughter) — but I think she claims Michelle didn’t go all the way down. (Laughter.) That’s what I heard. I just want to set the record straight — Michelle outdoes me in pushups as well. (Laughter.) So she shouldn’t feel bad. 184, Ill Tempered Cur - thanks for reminding me of that great Dayan quote.

Rabin, at the time defense minister, answered a question in my presence about Israel's history of military proficiency this way: "You must consider who are our enemies".  In that great deep voice with the great thick Israeli accent and the characteristic sneer/frown.

Same thing.

Listening to an Israeli military intel officer yesterday, things have changed.  Not so much the quality of the adversary, but their number and diversity.  Sinai is currently the hot sector, after of course having been dead-quiet for decades.  He said this was a result of Egyptian military distraction ("they barely control Cairo"), not an official strategy.  And even the Golan Heights, also quiet for decades, are starting to see small unsophisticated shenanigans.

Most troubling is Hezbollah's intensive build-up and infrastructure efforts, naturally featuring their specialty, de facto war crimes.  As in deliberately putting non-combatants at risk to gain a military advantage (embedding rocket sites, command and control, and other valuable targets in civilian areas).  The number of rockets they assess as present is terrifying.  Methinks if Hezbollah ever decides to go for it, the response will involve Iz'rl invading and taking territory far beyond the southern zone they occupied or controlled last time.

First they convince themselves it's necessary, then they convince themselves it can work, then they start pushing. Because it that case, I *am* picky like some people. But if it's just a woman who just appreciates the odd cheeseburger, I'm down with that.

Mario Tennis could be the best tennis video game ever made by anyone for any platform and I'd still not be buying it because it is a tennis. If I wanted to play tennis I'd do it for real. Badly, but for real. To me, sports games on computers is like masturbating while ignoring a willing and attractive partner. I simply have no interest in pretending to do something I could be doing for real if I found the interest.

Already got Ghost Recon and Tetris for $10 each on a Target clearance. Target reduced a bunch of their 3DS stock in March.

Dr. Letrec was a possible but it sold out on Sunday before I had a chance to go by the store.

I made my one big new platform indulgence when I got the unit. Target was having a B2G1 then. I picked up Mario Land, Star Fox, and Zelda. (Despite having played the N64 remakes in their original form long ago.)  But a week later Best Buy had the same promotion, so I returned the games to Target and got them from BB instead due to the Reward Zone kickback program, used in combination with my Toys R Us MasterCard to maximize the kickbacks.

I was a CheapAss Gamer long before the CAG site started a few years ago. In thirty years I've bought hundreds of games and paid full price for fewer than a dozen and usually under 40% of the release MSRP.

So I'm kind of hard to please. A B2G1 always grabs my attention but the 3DS is still a very young platform with a small library. I'll just have to let this one pass.

To me, sports games on computers is like masturbating while ignoring a willing and attractive partner. I simply have no interest in pretending to do something I could be doing for real if I found the interest.

In my case, it depends on the sport. I like the pro sports-based video games to a point...I can't spare the time the time to play "franchise mode" and such, but I like being able to insert myself into the game as escapism (since I'll obviously never be able to play major league sports for real). I enjoy the Tiger Woods golf games as well. I'll never be able to play the great courses like Pebble Beach on real life. Video tennis and bowling, I agree with you.

you can find stuff like that.  I found my virginity and it was no where near where I left it.

Actually, it was laying in the gutter looking all homeless and tattered, so I tried to sneak past it without waking it up.  I tried so hard to get rid of it the first time there was no way I wanted it back.  Anyway, I thought I was in the clear when it just jumped up and stuck to my leg.  So there I was jumping up and down shaking my leg like some palsy version of St. Vitus dance and the damn thing just won't shake off.  Finally I just had to go on home with it stuck right on there.

Once I got home I tried everything, but it was like a scene from Alien -- it wouldn't come off and when I cut it the blood was such a strong acid it ate right through the floor.  So, I found my virginity, or maybe it found me.  So, you never know ....

I was an MP in the mid 70s stationed at Fort Benning.

Ticked me off seeing Jimmy Carter's mom coming on post with a Secret Service car in the front, followed by another Secrect Service car with Jimmah's mother, and a follow on Secret Service car at the rear.

This woman, who's son was the President of the US, who had tons of peanut money coming out of head, was coming on Benning to use our PX and commissary.  What she bought at the facillities caused some many enlisted soldier's family's to go without some of the food they needed to feed their familys.

Really ticked me off.

At the time I was a demoncrat.  This caused me to vote for Reagan, and I've been a conservative ever since.
